Release:2018 / EU – Original

This mind-bending “Question and Answer EP”, his second release on The Bunker New York. Igarashi is a lifelong musician and a professional sound designer by trade. Through decades of experience composing music he has developed a sophisticated and nuanced approach to production that allows him to evoke powerful moods and emotions. In recent years he has been applying his production skills to great effect, developing a distinctive brand of psychedelic techno that has been released on labels including Midgar, Semantica and Time to Express. Describing his creative development, Igarashi tells us: “the more I produce and play, the more I discover. I keep finding different aspects or nuances of making and performing techno music. This process of learning and constantly going deeper is very exciting for me, it is unlike anything else I have experienced before. I am appreciative of the opportunities I have been getting and I just want to pursue them as far as I can, it is deeply motivating doing something I love with people I respect.” A chance encounter at Berghain in February of 2015 connected Wata with Bryan Kasenic, founder of The Bunker New York, who already knew and loved his music. As a result of this meeting, The Bunker released a very well received podcast from Wata later that year, which was followed by Igarashi’s “Mood of the Machines EP” in 2016. The relationship has further deepened through working together on this follow up record and Wata making his North American debut as a DJ at The Bunker in September of 2017. According to Igarashi, the “Question and Answer EP” is “about communication and connections, so it makes sense for it to be on The Bunker NY, a label that features so many friends and artists that inspire me. My relationship with Bryan has been an important and rewarding one for me, and I am really happy to be working with him again on this record.” These rewards quickly become obvious on a dance floor with unfurling infinite arpeggiations working themselves out with the inexorable driving force that can be found in truly great techno. The EP opens with tense and driving “Outburst”, which is complemented by the slow-burning “Train of Thought”. The B side features the title track, a beautifully unfolding number geared for generating powerful moments of release on the dancefloor. The EP finishes in style with the downtempo vibes of ‘Broken Telephone’. Versatile enough to be dropped during peaks or at other times, this new EP from Igarashi boasts 4 equally kaleidoscopic cuts that will surely stand out in a set.

From the very first track, it’s clear that Abby Echiverri’s debut, the “Ab Initio” EP is something different and rare: a polished and fresh interpretation of electronic music that incorporates classic electro squelches with intricate broken beats and expansive synthesizer zone-outs.Although this is her first EP, Abby has extensive history as a musician, sound engineer, DJ and VJ. Her current trajectory started early in childhood when she was classically trained in violin, flute, piano and vocals, cementing music as a part of her daily life. In high school she picked up turntables and began collecting records, eventually moving to NYC to study recording engineering and perform in post-punk bands, and became a regular at Wierd and The Bunker at a very young age. Since then, Echiverri has devoted her professional hours to engineering, maintaining, and manufacturing audio equipment for studios and clubs around the world. This record’s name “Ab Initio” means “from the beginning” or “from first principles”, invoking a propulsive leap into the future and also perhaps including an element of the eponymous. When we asked her to tell us more about the process of creating these hardware-based jams, Abby explained: “It all stems from my own experiences on the dancefloor and wanting to recreate that for other people. I want to make music that rewires the brain: music that is challenging, yet groovy... repetitive, yet evolving. An aural psychedelic. It's a lofty goal - I'm still working on it.” If Ab Initio is one of her first steps towards that goal then we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Body music, mind music, ass-shaking and head-boggling, Clay Wilson’s third release on The Bunker New York is a dance EP that manages to be both restrained and cacophonous, speaking to his classical training as well as his years as a DJ, producer and sound tech. Since we first met Clay as a new-to-New York City Bunker party regular back in the Public Assembly days, through releasing his earlier music and having him join us at numerous label showcases around the world, we’ve come to know him as an exceptional producer and DJ, an essential part of The Bunker family and a regular fixture in our lineups. This new release is an expression of the deep relationship we’ve all forged through years of raving together - of freaking out to an unreleased track on the dance floor only to find out your friend made it and then getting a crew together to remix it and put it out!

J. F. Burma is a new analog synth project of Jeremy Berman, a longtime friend of The Bunker who we met via the forums of I-F’s Cybernetic Broadcasting System internet radio station in the early 2000’s. While living in Brooklyn, Jeremy spent many hours each week searching for undiscovered gems among the piles of records (and sometimes rat skeletons) at notorious Greenpoint crate-digging spot The Thing. Inspired and educated by the music he was finding, he purchased his first modular and started building synthesizers and modules in spite of his lack of training in electrical engineering. Currently, about half of his current Eurorack rig has been DIY’ed via trial and error.Jeremy put out his first EP on Shaddock Records under the name Factory Aire in 2013 and it found a warm welcome from critics, DJ’s and collectors. After a move to Los Angeles and the birth of his daughter, Jeremy’s music production took a bit of a back seat and The Bunker New York is proud to release the Nomadic EP, his first record produced under the influence of a toddler. All three tracks have a very live feel as Jeremy draws most of his inspiration from interacting with the music machines during late night jam sessions: “When I’m jamming out I tend to gravitate towards trippier vibes, which is just a reflection of my personal affinity for acid and psychedelic music.” The three tracks that comprise the Nomadic EP are the precisely perfect mystical outsider jams for those sunrises when a bit of human-modulated machine music is exactly what’s needed.

It features 12 tracks of hallucinogenic, psychedelic Techno, “Valere Aude” is an acid-etched trip to the outer reaches of the mind. The finished product is a steamy, moody record, experimenting with atmospheres, tempos, and sounds, designed for blistering hot days and cold, rainy nights. We couldn't be more excited to share it with you.

Three cuts of heady, cerebral bliss guaranteed to push any dancefloor a little further out into the interstellar, In Russell's hands, Clay Wilson's "E4" becomes a spaced-out stepper's delight. His rework of Romans' "Coptos" lets the acidic undertones of the original run free while snappy percussion holds focus. And while we're not one to pick favorites, Russell's remix of Zemi17's "Rangda," stripped to its bare essentials, is almost a purer representation of the original than the original itself, designed to lift a willing crowd into a trance state.

Forma’s combustible mixture of lush synth explorations and frenetic rhythm has captivated the margins of the international synth scene since their acclaimed 2011 debut on John Elliott’s Spectrum Spools label. Following 2012’s dark and penetrating OFF/ON, the trio set a direct course toward the shadowy perimeter of the dance floor, with John Also Bennett replacing original member Sophie Lam. FORMA’s celebrated live performances -- extended improvisational journeys veering from the ecstatic to the foreboding -- draw techno, noise, and synth disciples into their realm.
