Estudando O Samba
LP | 1976 | EU | Reissue (Mr Bongo)

Release:1976 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
HHV congratulates Mr Bongo for 30 years of sublime reissues and outstanding music. Until the 22nd of August, all Mr Bongo items are available at a special birthday celebration price.

Incredibly unique concept album from the one and only, Tom Zé. As featured in Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Brazilian Albums of all-time list (2007).
One of Ze’s finest albums in our opinion, originally released by Continental Brazil in 1976 – a tough one to find at a good price in its original form now. ‘Estudando do Samba’ (or ‘Studying The Samba’) is a post-Tropicalia studio
experimentation laiden with layers of hypnotic percussion, effects & samples that deconstructs the ‘samba’ form. Recorded during what was arguably his most creative period.
David Byrne found the record in Rio in the late 90’s and included several songs on his Tom Ze collection for Luaka Bop a few years later. At that time Tom was not recording or touring much; playing low-key shows in Sao Paulo and
contemplating a move back to Irará to work at a service station owned by one of his cousins. Byrne’s project helped to reignite his career and he hasn’t looked back since.

The release is on 180g vinyl. Wonderful 70s work from Tom Zé! The record's a bit more straightforward than some of his other records from the decade, and has a number of tracks with a samba sound at the base – but there's more than enough fantastic material to keep the record fresh, and Tom's writing is as great as ever.

This is a 180g vinyl pressing. In 1968 Tom Zé; moved from Salvador Bahia to Sao Paulo where he hung out and wrote with his friends Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso. Although initially part of theTropicalia movement,Zé was so independent he was determined to forge his own musical path. He started by recording Grande Liquidacao, a hyperactive pop album backed up by two incredible psychedelic rockbands: Os Brazoes and Os Versateis.

This 1992 album by Tom Zé was already produced by Luaka Bop, David Byrne's label, after his discovery by Byrne when he was almost dropping everything to return to his hometown to work in a gas station. "I don't make art, I make spoken and sung journalism." This self-coined definition by Tom Zé helps listeners understand his music. Pop music with self-made instruments, references to modern erudite music, and strong reminiscences of ancient northeastern cantigas de cego and other grooves. On this album subtitled "The Return of Tom Zé," he sticks to the concept developed in the '60s by tropicália, the movement he helped to conceptualize, which perceived music as a cultural industry production for which it is valid to take any world influences, mixing them with Brazilian rhythms, concrete poetry, existentialism, drum machine loops (added later), pop culture, contemporary urban grooves, and everything else that eventually could be thought of. Tom Zé has lots of thoughts to express in his lyrics, which had an English version in the inlay, and this release may be very appealing for those who are into world music. It even explores some indigenous styles, delivered in an almost pure form. But, as he himself put out, his albums shouldn't be listened to for beautiful melodies.
