Official Metalface Version, including the “Occult Hymn” EP available on vinyl for the first time, and two previously unreleased tracks.Back in 2005, super producer Danger Mouse and masked hip hop supervillain DOOM came together for “The Mouse And The Mask”, a collaborative album released under the name Dangerdoom. Among DOOM’s most successful projects both critically and commercially, the album was inspired by Cartoon Network’s late-night Adult Swim programming slate, and includes appearances from several Adult Swim characters, including Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost, Harvey Birdman, and more. “The Mouse And The Mask” also features guest spots from Talib Kweli, Ghostface Killah, and Cee Lo Green. This deluxe 3xLP vinyl reissue courtesy of DOOM’s own label Metalface Records also contains several bonus cuts not on the original album. Time waits for no man, but venerable New York emcee and producer Roc Marci remains a rare exception to the rule. Enchanting listeners with his dexterous lyricism, methodically soulful beats, and steely persona on releases like 2010's critically-acclaimed Marcberg, and his revered 2012 effort, Reloaded, the pride of Hempstead, Long Island emerges from the shadows after a three-year hiatus with the equally spellbinding Rosebudd's Revenge. This is the rapper's fourth studio album. Aside from appearances on landmark releases, including De La Soul's Grammy-nominated And the Anonymous Nobody, and Ka's Days With Dr. Yen Lo, Roc Marci's presence has been scarce, making Rosebudd's Revenge one of the more anticipated hip-hop releases of 2017.Enlisting his band of collaborators to join him on every song on his last release, Roc Marci flips the script on his latest offering. Rosebudd’s Revenge’s lone features are frequent collaborators: Brownsville emcee Ka on the epic sparring session ""Marksmen,"" and Knowledge The Pirate on ""No Smoke."" This uncluttered lineup gives Roc Marci ample space to deliver his tales from the strip. Key selections from Rosebudd's Revenge include the suave, keyboard-laden affair ""Better Know,"" ""Killing Time,"" ""Pig Knuckles,"" and the hard-boiled title-track, and boasts musings that rank among the best of Roc Marci's tenured run.Spilling his fluid flow over production from the likes of Grammy-nominated producer Knxwledge, as well as George Paulin, Animoss, Don C, Modus Op, and himself, Roc Marci reaffirms his placement on the musical avant garde and standing as one of hip-hop's preeminent lyricists on Rosebudd's Revenge, a defining effort that will leave fans salivating for more.

Exclusive to hhv.de in Europe!Strangers Of Necessity consist of young upcoming producer, CoryAyo from Iowa City, IA, and veteran rhyme sayer, Fooch the MC, from Chicago,IL. The two connected by chance via twitter, after Cory saw Fooch in a 319 cypher video on youtube. They linked up offline and quickly became friends, sparking an immediate chemistry and need to make quality hip-hop music together; hence the name Strangers Of Necessity. They instantly began recording music and doing shows locally, generating a small buzz in the area. With CoryAyo's affiliation with London, UK based netlabel, Hard Jazz 7, and Fooch being an artist on Mic Hand Recordings, they knew they had the launch pad needed to release their debut EP, Tangerine Avenue.Their sound is best described as a fresh take on that golden era of hip-hop, blending tasteful jazz and soul samples, crisp snares, boomy kicks on wonky patterns with a soulful delivery, dense schemes and potent punch-lines that hit peaks before unseen. Strangers Of Necessity now better acquainted and constantly adding shows to their calendar, are hoping to bring you retro fresh beats and rhymes that speak to right now; giving you that feeling that can only be described as ""goose bump music."

Dan The Automator’s and Kool Keith’s famed collaboration from the mid-‘90s is celebrated with a 28-track set housed in a custom, octagonal box, with 5 unreleased songs (originals + remixes); original Pushead cover artwork; and 40 page liner notes booklet. All Songs on Side F have never ever been released before anywhere! In early 1996, a new indie duo appeared that won over a whole new international audience, from hard rocks to skate punks. That pair was Dr. Octagon: Dan “The Automator” Nakamura and Kool Keith [Thornton].In some ways, the Dr. Octagon album is a solo release. But Keith wasn’t the only hand on deck. He brought along a young, New York-based MC with him: Sir Menelik. Menelik was featured on four album tracks, starting with “Dr. Octagon,” and proved to be an excellent super-scientifical, fast-rhyming foil to Keith. And there was one final featured contributor who helped add to the album’s next-level sound: San Francisco’s DJ Q*Bert, who cuts on half of the album’s songs. The album originally came out on The Automator’s Bulk Recordings label in early 1996, with cover art by metal and punk cult hero visual artist Pushead. Pressing numbers weren’t huge, but as the year went on, the buzz grew, and a slightly expanded version of the album was released on James Lavelle’s London-based Mo Wax label. Then Dan took an offer from newly-formed major label DreamWorks, to re-release the album with extra tracks in mid-1997. The new domestic pressing allowed for a bigger press push, as well as the group’s first and only video, for “Blue Flowers.”Beyond “Blue Flowers,” the album is chock-full of mind-bending tracks, like “Earth People”; the wacked-out but sincere love ballad “Girl Let Me Touch You”; the metal-tinged “I’m Destructive”; Q-Bert’s turntable workout “Bear Witness”; and, of course, freaky Keith skits like “Elective Surgery” and “General Hospital”. “Dr. Octagonecologyst” is one of the most unique rap records the genre has ever seen, and this is the perfect way to celebrate it – whether it’s the first time you have heard this mind-expanding record, or the three thousandth.

Akshin Alizadeh, the man from Azerbaijan, is the lucky one tapped from the label’s roster to remix Marlena Shaw’s “Woman of the Ghetto.”The producer’s strong funk and nu-jazz influences, as well as his ability to combine funky grooves with punchy hip-hop beats, are on full display once again. Rightfully dramatic orchestral strings give way to bluesy rhythmic wah-wah guitar plucking, slightly cabaret-ish piano, pitch bending keys, and a totally sultry sax. The percussion sounds like signature Alizadeh with a flickering hat pattern, well placed snare rolls, and punchy interplay with the kick.

“On my last couple of albums I challenged myself with regard to formats, trying to push the envelope as far as what exactly constitutes a rap record. ‘Talking (Bleep)’ and ‘Problems’ were my last two lead singles, both markedly unconventional. I adore both of those songs and I adore both of those albums specifically for the new creative fulfillment I enjoyed while making them. There’s much more of that to come, but after spending 3 years outside of the box I was left with a burning desire to just fuckin rhyme. That’s Veins.” - Homeboy Sandman

Over the past 17 years, Brother Ali has earned wide critical acclaim for his deeply personal, socially conscious, and inspiring brand of hip-hop. Under Rhymesayers Entertainment, he's unleashed a series of lauded projects, establishing himself as one of the most respected independent voices in music. The latest chapter in that celebrated journey is All the Beauty in This Whole Life, a 15-track collection produced entirely by Atmosphere's Anthony "Ant" Davis. "This entire album is based on the reality that beauty is the splendor of truth" says the Minneapolis MC. "Beauty in all of its forms is the outward manifestation of love and virtue. It soothes the soul and pulls it gently toward the truth it communicates. Every word and note of this album is intended to either reflect beauty, or expose the ugliness that blocks us from living lives of meaning." All the Beauty in This Whole Life is Ali's first official release in five years and represents the newest and most refined chapter of his life's journey. "Each of my albums are the result of the pain, growth and eventual healing that I experience. Articulating the pain and navigating the healing allows the people who really feel my music to travel with me. It's not only that we hurt together, we heal together as well." Contrasting intensely heavy moments with joyous and grateful ones, All the Beauty in This Whole Life arrives right on time, to help heal a divided nation through the power of music. Ali wouldn't have it any other way. "In times of great suffering in the outside world, the most important battles start from within."

‘Molotov’ represents the best elements of its creators, Brooklyn rapper, Saga and Chicago producer, Thelonious Martin. The rhymes are potent and powerful, taking down everyone from cynics to haters, wack emcees, and inner demons. And the instrumentals serve to bring those words to life by way of head-nodding percussion, and slick sample flips.Because it was crafted by one rapper and one producer, ‘Molotov’ is especially effective, and have made it clear why their approach works so well, especially as a duo. The 12 tracks move in and out of each other seamlessly, while tackling a variety of sounds and subject matter, all with an effective supporting cast of notable features. Like the one-two punch of the straight-up banger “Karma,” which features a fired-up Freddie Gibbs, and the Fashawn-assisted lead single, “Yesterday.”“With Molotov, it was about maintaining the level of quality I’m known for,” the producer says, noting that it all started with the two sending tracks back and forth. “As the project was coming along, we started building the proper chemistry to make this special.”Saga agreed, calling the project’s conception “organic.” It was that unrestrained vibe that he says “allowed me to be free with my thought process, and write for the moment.” As a result, he was able to explore new and intriguing ideas, like how “chaos is the end result of a long process of inner discontent within our own lives.” And you can hear him eloquently rhyme about this subject on “Misunderstood,” his favorite cut on the 12 track LP.

Prince Paul hit Chopped Herring up to release this dope early 90's project!!The first incarnation of the group was formed around 1989 in Amityville, Long Island, New York, although the family grew up in Long Island. The family of four brothers (Anthony, Richard, Joel, and Edward) and one sister (Dawne), of which Anthony (Poetic) was the eldest, were born to Trinidadian parents who moved from Trinidad and Tobago in 1971, making their first residence in Queens, New York for a short time, then moving to Long Island. John Berkeley (a pastor and a local businessman) and Ela Berkeley (a homemaker, cook-nutritionist, and teacher) were both singers and artistic in general, and they encouraged artistic expression in their five children. The family was well-rounded musically, singing gospel and R&B up to their early teens all around New York, other states, and Canada as "The Berkeley Singers". Anthony (Poetic), Dawne, and Joel (Brainstorm) sang, accompanied by Richard on the drums and Eddie (E-Sharp) on the piano or keyboard.Poetic began rhyming in his early teens in Wyandanch, and was known by many names and building a name for himself as a lyrical battle MC. He changed his name to Poetic around 1985, and in 1986 he formed the crew known as Too Poetic, who in 1988-89 released a modestly popular single called: “God Made Me Funky/Poetical Terror”, under the DNA/Tommy Boy Music imprint. The group’s relationship with Tommy Boy Records eventually panned out for various reasons, scrapping the album and making Poetic very displeased, an early casualty of the politics of the music business. While Poetic was just beginning his formal hip hop career in 1987–89, Brainstorm was attending college at the State University of New York at Farmingdale, Long Island, where he was the roommate of Brooklyn’s own Super DJ Richie Rich (who had been in Third Base, Clark Kent’s Supermen, and the movie Juice). The university was host to many hip hop artists as visitors for parties and to do shows like Rakim, EPMD, Producer-Super DJ Clark Kent, and Biz Markie. After Brainstorm finished his college run in 1989, he took time to learn many aspects of the music business, but in 1989 he and Poetic mutually decided to pair up with a hardcore lyrical edge, original word play, and acute metaphors, after many collaborations between them since 1985. Thus, Da Bruthas G.R.Y.M. was born shortly after Too Poetic’s deal with DNA/Tommy Boy had soured. The energy and high chemistry between these true by-blood brothers at the time was, simply put, natural. In the first Bruthas G.R.Y.M. era (c. 1989–1992), the brothers Poetic (Brother One) and Brainstorm (Brother Two) garnered much respect on the underground hip hop scene of New York Their first official demo featured the underground bangers like “Bruthas G.R.Y.M.”, “Circle-Circle-Dot-Dot”, the politically charged “Popcorn” and “Livin’ In Hell (Had To Survive)”. The demo featured production mastering by Nate "NATO" Tinsley, their in-house producer Semi-Automatic (Pedro Sims, Mr. Semi, Gravediggaz), and the brothers themselves. After blazing underground radio and live shows around New York City, they were listed in The Source magazine as the best unsigned rap group of 1989. The crew was then managed by longtime friend Jack Pope (Jack Sprat, Starving Artists Entertainment), who later became the road manager of the Gravediggaz. These cassette tape “dubs” floated around the New York streets in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and their demo eventually made their way to the seasoned musical ear of fellow Amityvillain Prince Paul (Stetsasonic, De La Soul, Gravediggaz) from his association with the local Long Island artists who had met the brothers and saw their raw talent. In 1990 Prince Paul decided to fund and executive produce further demos, finding various other known and up-and-coming producers for the unnamed project, as well as being the tentative DJ for the group. Then the unfortunate happened – being disenfranchised by the politics and games of the music business and life in general, Brainstorm just quit altogether for “personal enlightenment”, before any formal deal could solidify. Poetic understood about Brainstorm’s personal path at that stage in his life, but was silently devastated because they were so close to sealing a major record deal that would have propelled them further into Hip Hop history. Their original demo, even today, is still one of Prince Paul’s favorites. It was not until 1992 that Poetic, after Brainstorm quit in 1991, that it is said that Poetic “fell on hard times”, including a short period of homelessness. Brainstorm would continue to write for leisure and therapeutic reasoning, but never to seriously pursue a music career, moving to Brooklyn New York and later down south to various states; in fact, Brainstorm was so “finished with Hip Hop” that he gave Poetic all of his original rhyme books to use at his own discretion – some lyrics ending up on Gravediggaz projects.

“Developing the brain, always measure the aim, feeling pleasant in the present things could never be the same.” - InsightWith great excitement, Redefinition Records is proud to release the latest project from one of hip hop's most multi-talented artists. Making his Redefinition Records feature album debut, Insight the Truncator aka Andre Todman returns to the spotlight with a new album after a departure from the industry in recent years. Where was he and what was he up to? Well after a decade and a half in the business, dozens of respected records, countless national and international tours, Insight took a well-deserved hiatus to try other endeavors such as app development, electronics and social media strategizing in which he found major success. This shouldn't surprise longtime fans who may remember in as early as 1997, Insight created his own website, Insight.fm which even featured an interactive SP1200 and forums. (pre-social media and long before having a web presence was was on most artist’s agendas). Building a strong reputation for his live performance, his on-stage capabilities included not only rapping, but also producing, DJing and simultaneous live drawing. The triple threat from Boston (MC, DJ and producer) has dedicated his life to his creativity and name, catalog and content are a true testament to the kind person Insight is on and off of his recordings. Credited for mentoring and being instrumental in the career beginnings of many of today's staples in Boston Hip Hop and beyond, he also assisted a young D.C. native Damu the Fudgemunk, who later matured into an esteemed solo artist in his own right (and co-owner of Redefinition records). The 2 would first collaborate on one of the greatest hip hop albums of the 2000's as Y Society on 2007's full length, Travel at Your Own Pace. As a result, they formed a brotherhood that today is well into its second decade, bookmarked by this latest release. On Ears Hear Spears, “The Truncator” passionately speaks his mind through rhyme as The Fudgemunk handles all production. Insight offered the following thoughts about the album: "Ears Hear Spears is a milestone in my life that reflects an intersection of so many paths. I had been living in Berlin and was frequently touring at the time for a 4-year stretch. I was just preparing to move back to the US. It was ’07 and the first generation iPhone was released so I started getting into app development, as the music industry was very rapidly changing. As an American under the Bush presidency, I had a lot on my mind. I had only met Damu once at a show in 2004, but we kept in contact for several years prior to our first collaboration. He called me with an album concept and a potential deal with Tres Records. I was on board and felt a responsibility to honestly express myself. We turned in Ears, however, we were shut down at the time by the label (Tres Records, now defunct). They simply said that this album was not what they wanted and expected from us. Damu and I only took about 10 days to do it, but instead of revising it, we shelved it. We quickly recorded a whole new album for label approval (Travel At Your Own Pace). Travel was released and time went on. Over the years, Ears became foreign to me. It got to a point where it seemed like my past speaking to my present. The album discusses the importance of togetherness, using your mind, not being manipulated by the music industry to represent ignorance and yet maintain rawness. Opportunities were limited due to the content in which some suggested was irrelevant and unmarketable. As time progressed, inequality, racism and ignorance moved to the forefront; dominating news and the rising usage of social media. This album became more relevant as time went by. It feels as if it is a duty to release it, before I release the new projects I have planned for the near future. Rather than just point out the negative, hopefully it can help us to find ways to cope and move our mind to a better place." InsightEars Hear Spears is the full-length counterpart to Insight & Damu’s 45 single "Know the Meaning” Remix. Considering the state of the world as we know it today, Insight’s lyrics couldn't possibly be any more relevant and timely than they are right now. This is especially notable being that the album was initially recorded in ’07 (it was unreleased until now). Throughout 10 outstanding tracks Insight delivers a diverse lyrical exhibition over a then 20-21 year old Damu the Fudgemunk's beats. There's an undeniable level of directness and sincerity in his lyrics which are artfully assembled in a manner that will astonish literary buffs, yet permeate the lives of everyday listeners alike.

Ill Camille, LA hip hop's female perspective.Ill Camille has been a vital member of the LA music scene for some years. Kendrick Lamar used her vocals prominently for the “good kid, m.A.A.d city” track “Sing about me”, she has been working with other TDE artists occasionally and spend a lot of time writing for different projects Terrance Martin was involved with. At the same time Camille was developing her own material with her fellow peers such as MNDSGN, Iman Omari, DJ Battlecat, Like (Pac Div) Georgia Anne Muldrow & SIR who are all featured on her album “Heirloom” just like TDE co-president Punch. “Heirloom” productions range from smooth, g-funk esque west coast beats to live & organic soulful beats, working as the perfect backdrop for Camille's powerful, intelligent and thought thru lyrics The album is deeply personal revolving around the issues that mater in her life from friends and family, her role as a woman and the heirloom of her and her surrounding: “I feel like everyone are heirlooms of our mothers and fathers. An heirloom is just something that’s passed down through a family. We get heirlooms in the form of game, encouragement or wise words. I know everyone has an aunt or uncle that’s given them some bars about life in general. I have a village around me that have given me heirlooms in the form of conversations”.

The Notorious B.I.G. is widely recognized as one of the world’s most influential rappers and has sold more than 17 million albums in the U.S. alone. Before his murder in 1997, Christopher Wallace recorded two classic albums as The Notorious B.I.G. His debut Ready to Die arrived in 1994 and helped revitalize the East Coast rap scene with massive hits like “Big Poppa” and “Juicy.” Faith Evans has enjoyed worldwide success as an award-winning singer, songwriter, actress and writer. She has recorded eight studio albums, including the back-to-back platinum smashes, Faith (1995) and Keep The Faith (1998). Faith Evans and The Notorious B.I.G. famously met at a photo shoot in 1994 and were married nine days later. What followed would become one of the most legendary love stories in hip-hop history. Evans has now, 20 years after B.I.G.’s still unsolved murder, created The King & I, a brand new album that tells the story of their life together. The CD features 25 tracks, including newly recorded vocals by Evans melded with vocals by Biggie Smalls, some well-known but also a selection of rare and unheard rhymes from the B.I.G. vault. THE KING & I also includes an impressive list of guest appearances by rap royalty including Busta Rhymes, Jadakiss, Lil’ Cease, Lil’ Kim, Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Snoop Dogg. Evans has also brought on some of the most acclaimed producers in hip-hop, many of which produced some of B.I.G.’s most famous tracks, including DJ Premier, Just Blaze, Salaam Remi, Stevie J, and Chucky Thompson.

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of “Force Fed” we have teamedup with Fat Beats to release this limited edition colored vinyl.“The debut album from Ide the Shanty One, “Force Fed” is a verbalmaelstrom whipping through the placid seas of 21st centuryunderground hip-hop with thunderous beats and lightning-strike lyrics.Ide displays his furious command of the mic over 23 dark and stormingbeats, his imaginative and visceral word-warping and unrelenting ?owstriking listeners with gut-punch directness. Following Jak Progresso’s“Random Violence” as the 2nd full-length release from Creative JuicesMusic, “Force Fed” heralds the charge of this new artist onto the NYunderground scene: Ide the Shanty One. Already earning respect forexpert production and engineering for various underground artists, nowIde brings forth this manifesto of disgust and impatience with a twistedculture and reminds listeners why hip-hop is NOT dead. Throughout hisfrst lp, he avoids lecturing about society directly but instead proclaimsthis gritty mission statement championing subversive artistry andpsychic exploration. This Creative Juices Music release gathers a totalof 10 producers, including Domingo, Deep and Ben Boogz (2 HungryBro’s/Creative Juices), DJ Connect (Elite Fleet), and others, as well asIde himself, yet projects a unifed sonic stampede of steel-toed hip-hop.Joining The Shanty One on the mic are U.G. (Cella Dwellas), SavageMessiah (formerly of Scienz of Life), Critical, Madness, Alucard, JakProgresso, and L.I.F.E.Long (Stronghold), all contributing cinematicsimiles in an unrelenting ?ood. Ide’s “Force Fed” is compelling inits ferocity, and ftting that he is initiating his chapter in music in thecompany of these well-known fgures on the underground scene.”ForceFed” is for hungry listeners, who’ve had enough of the formula, anddon’t mind a little pain if their rap would only get its edge back. Thisbrazen debut album from Ide the Shanty One is a sure classic for 2007and another strong product from the Creative Juices Music label.

Find a moment of clarity. ¡Eureka! is the new LP on Alpha Pup from Eureka the Butcher, a collection of intense, involved tracks with deliberate arrangements and undefinable style.Artists and searchers long for that “eureka” moment – an illuminated instance of clear purpose and pure focus. For Eureka the Butcher, as for many, the light follows the dark:“I wrote a lot of this album at a very dark time in my life. I’d lost some very important people in my life and I was at my most insecure, personally and musically speaking. I had to remember where I come from, who I’d learned from. I was at a low point and I hadn’t been applying my culture and my upbringing to my everyday life. But then I had a moment of clarity, and I started to feel better. I began remembering that I come from an incredible place, raised and taught by incredible people. Then I made some drastic decisions, including moving to Los Angeles. I also had a eureka moment in terms of workflow and approach.”The album’s multifaceted nature reflects Eureka’s diverse inspiration. Modular synth music of the ‘60s and ‘70s. LA’s rap, electronic, beat, and bass music scene. Hardware used to create the album dominates its sonic profile, from synthesizers and outboard compressors to live percussion and tape delays.“But the biggest influence is the music I grew up with: salsa, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and fusion. These types of music taught me how to play… I gravitated towards what I know: psychedelia, fast bass, synth lines, Caribbean rhythms and extremely tight relationships between interwoven parts.”

Following last year’s out-of-nowhere debut album, The Du-Rites (an NYC funk duo comprised of multi-instrumentalists J-Zone and Pablo Martin) return with a new double-sided snack, “Bite It” b/w “Bocho’s Groove”.Individually, J-Zone and Pablo are known for their exploits as a hip-hop producer/MC and the guitarist in the current line-up of the legendary Tom Tom Club, respectively. But as they continue their roll as The Du-Rites with this release and their forthcoming sophomore LP, Greasy Listening, their divergent backgrounds continue to cook up a brand of funk that’s entirely their own. “Bite It” - with drummer J-Zone’s numerous (and super funky) open drum breaks and organ riffs and Pablo’s blistering psychedelic guitar solo - is an example of hip-hop and psych throwing a greasy funk party and The Meters show up to crash it. The flip, “Bocho’s Groove,” raises the tempo for the dance floor, but the funk is no less heavy. Zone keeps the sticks flying with the b-boys and girls in mind, comps with the organ and peppers in his trademark dialogue cuts, while Pablo’s Fender Rhodes and guitar work evoke the funkier moments of ‘70s cop show scores. The Du-Rites self-titled debut LP (on ReDefinition Records) sold through its limited 500 pressing in one month. This single has been pressed in the same quantity. If you snooze, you lose, dig?!

Too many people sleep on Tougher Than Leather, Run-DMC’s fourth album. But hear us out as we plead the case for this amazing LP. By 1988 there was a lot more competition in the rap game – Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice-T and many more had given Hollis, Queens’ prodigal sons lots of competition. But Joe, Darryl and Jay were still at the top of their game, and hip-hop fans should never let this classic – chiefly produced by their Queens neighbor, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Davy D[MX] – get lost in their crates. For starters, the album’s first single, “Run’s House” b/w “Beats To The Rhyme” is arguably the most powerful one-two punch of the trio’s career, showing contenders to the rap throne that they could still destroy a beat, tag-teaming with power at any speed. Not to be lost in the shuffle, fans were also reminded on both sides that Jam-Master Jay remained one of the world’s best DJs, flexing the pinnacle of what would be called “turntablism” a decade later. Both songs show a musical telepathy between all three that has rarely been equaled. The second single, “Mary, Mary,” driven by an infectious Monkees sample, took a different approach, shrewdly ensuring that pop fanswho jumped on the Raising Hell bandwagon had something to chew on. But, like “Walk This Way,” the song wasn’t just bubblegum – there was an edge to it, and the lyrical gymnastics were very real. It wasn’t selling out, it was allowing fans to buy in. “Papa Crazy,” driven in concept and by a sample from the Temptations’ “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” followed a similar pop-leaning path.Overall, the lyrical content on the album was a step up from the group’s first three LPs. It’s easy to infer, looking back, that they were feeling the heat from their younger competitors in the rap game. The genre was changing fast, and they were up to the challenge. On cutslike “Radio Station” they bring substance to the grooves, by attacking Black Radio for its continual denigration of rap. “Tougher Than Leather” reminds the world that they were still the Kings of Rock, with hard guitars to drive the point home. And “They Call Us Run-DMC” and “Soul To Rock And Roll” both bring things back to their early days, with sure-fire park jam rhymes and killer cuts.Tougher Than Leather, which went platinum up against a lot of competition, perfectly bookends the ‘80s output of one of the decade’s most important groups. It encompasses the full range of the trio’s capabilities, and reminds us that Run-DMC should never be forgotten as both pioneers and party-rockers. And so, we say, long live Joe, Darryl and Jay!

Non Phixion’s album “The Future Is Now” is a true classic. Utilizing beats that would do Dr. Octagon-era Dan “The Automator” proud and rhyming schemes that bring to mind early Wu-Tang Clan or mid-’90s Gang Starr, Non Phixion exposes the sound of true underground hip-hop. This is music that reflects the sound and attitude of countless rappers selling their albums out of the back of their cars or in booths on the street, cutting together dirty and disjointed sounds with a confidence and quality that is unique to this particular genre. This would all be for nothing if it wasn’t for the excellent raps from Ill Bill, Goretex, and Sabac Red, a trio of rappers who have a Tribe Called Quest-like chemistry. Their clever lyrics, respectable skills, and rough voices make this an intense and dark landmark in alternative rap.

Javotti Media presents the album release “Here For A Reason” by K'Valentine.K’Valentine made her entrance into this world on a cold snowy day at a downtown Chicago hospital. She served as an early Christmas gift for her mother. The news of her birth also excited her father, Valentine Ogilvie Reid, who at the time, was incarcerated in another state. At an early age, in spite of many family hardships, K’Valentine excelled academically and in the Arts. Anything associated with creativity was and still is her forte.K’s exceptional artistic ability was so evident that it’s no surprise that music became her life’s passion. When she discovered the power of hip hop, it became her first love. Soon enough, she was impressing friends and family with her vast knowledge about the world of hip hop. K’Valentine began her lyrical journey by writing poetry to get out emotions she wanted to express. After a chance meeting with world renowned poet laureate Dr. Maya Angelou before she passed, K’Valentine was encouraged to practice until she mastered her craft. On the advice of Dr. Angelou, K wrote poetry non-stop, and those poems eventually transitioned into songs. After reciting poetry at numerous spoken word events and receiving positive feedback, it was time for K to finally get in the booth. In 2014, K’Valentine linked up with Javotti Media, a label owned by hip hop star Talib Kweli, and began to work on her third mixtape, “Million Dollar Baby”, where you find K’Valentine rhyming over tracks that are new as well as her versions of existing hits, giving the listener a well-rounded perspective of a young lady that can lyrically spar with the best of them.
