The second installment of Uzuri’s “The Wilderness Sessions” delivers 3 tracks geared towards the refined dancers and listeners of the world. The idea here is slow burning broken beat tracks infused with the soul of jazz and funk. The EP opens with Fox ‘N Hound, a slightly menacing and equally sexy jam which ebbs and flows with a delightfully funky bass line and enough melodic accents to keep full attention. The secret here is in the details which are craft-fully manipulated by this talented duo. Futonjam continues the trend of beautifully unfolding composition with its shuffled percussion and gracefully evolving melodies. A perfect track for home listening and for those deep sultry moments on the dance floor. The crown jewel of this release is certainly the near 9 minute odyssey that is Zukunft/ Silber. A track which entertains and pushes towards a sophisticated style which is undeniably unique in approach. Using broken patterns as a back drop for beautifully orchestrated strings, micro flutes and longing horns it transforms from a sweet and delicate sound to something more demanding of our bodies movement. This release will be sure to mark the beginning of what we can expect from these two producers who clearly aim to set themselves apart from the crowd.

Uzuri starts 2013 with a released that comes deep from the Detroit underground. It’s unlikely that you’ll be familiar with the name Whodat (Terri McQueen), but she’s been rocking selected dancefloors in the States and Canada for the past seven plus years, and more recently has touched down in Europe – notably with a gig at Berlin’s ://about blank alongside Motor City compatriot, Marcellus Pittman. Back in The D she runs the Ya Digg Records store and has hosted her Turning Point radio show for a couple of years, but it’s obviously her production talent that brought her to Uzuri’s door. ‘Shut Up and Dance’, the EP’s opener, is an almost disarmingly stripped-back percussive track that eschews the usual drum machine sounds in favor of a lone chiming bell and deep voice pads. It’s effectiveness as a dancefloor tool gradually unfolds without the need to add extra layers. This is followed by a remix from one Tony Cak, an Indiana-based producer and radio DJ whom Terri connected with at a Techno music conference in 2005. Tony turns in a heavy reworking – pretty much taking an opposite approach to the original. The resulting washes of sound result in an almost shoegazey stomp to the track. The flip features one of Whodat’s most recent productions, ‘Love 4 Köln’, which is an ode to friends in Cologne, Germany. Terri was invited to spin at one of Viola Klein’s ‘Bring Your Ass’ parties in the city, and fell in love with the place over the course of her stay. Viola collaborated on the track along with another Detroit native, R.J. Austin.
