74 Miles Away is a collaboration between jazz pianist composer Pierre Anckaert, producer duo MonkeyRobot and flutist Stefan Bracaval. They’ll take you on a trip from the era of Bob James, Weather Report and Herbie Hancock, 80’s boogie to the future beat sound of today. Heavy analogue synth action and deep Moog basslines are omnipresent, keeping the lush Fender Rhodes sound in balance.

Limited edition for Record Store Day 2015!Some people call 999 'punk rock', but others call them rock and roll. Just listen to the chugging rhythmic guitars, steady backbeat, and snappy melody on "Homicide," the opening track to the U.S.-only live EP, The Biggest Tour In Sport. Recorded on their 1980 U.S. and Canadian tour to support the Biggest Prize In Sport LP, this six-track EP is spicy hot, containing the band (punk) rockin' and rollin' through four old classics, "Inside Out," and "Boys In The Gang," from Biggest Prize. Live recordings can be questionable, but this is one of the few where you don't have to worry about the sound quality: it's terrific. Up next on this disc are two non-album B-sides, and a non-album A-side; all three are worthwhile 999 pub/punk rockers. Those tracks are followed by one of the most important punk albums ever! Upon first listen, many folks were amazed to find out that 999 were a great rock n roll band, punk or no punk. The edges are still there, but they are well-rounded this time out, thanks to producer Vic Maile. The anthemic "Boys In The Gang" starts off the set in style (but 999 always knew how to kick-start an album). "Inside Out," with Guy Days' twisted guitar riff, picks up the pace. Although "Trouble" slows things down with its reggae groove, it's such a great change of pace (Nick Cash's wail sounds similar to the Specials' Terry Hall on this track). "Fun Thing" has a great little hook, and a powerful guitar solo that will grab you by the balls. "Hollywood," about their first trip to California, received solid airplay in the U.S., and has remained a 999 classic ever since. "Stop! Stop!" is a bouncy little bubblegum punk nugget. Practically every track is a classic! So, there you have it: a great live EP, three cool non-album tracks plus one of the best albums of its era!

incl. Remix by Timothy J. FairplayDuring their European tour earlier this year, Canadian duo Jokers Of The Scene stopped over for a couple of days at Club Bizarre studio in Northern France. The two pair of producers locked up and came up with Betaville and Breakwater, two killer lo-fi and spaced out tracks. Betaville is a fuzzy dream that will make you dance in slow motion with your head in the clouds. Boasting a strong melodic and nostalgic feel, it unfolds its warm analog synth pads, old school sequences and drum machine to psychedelic effect. Imagine Boards Of Canada wanting to make you dance.. Even slower is Breakwater, a dirtier, chunkier track that ditches the softness of Betaville in favour of a more 'in your face' bass line and all together rougher attitude. It chugs along to old fashioned beat box claps and percussion and quirky synth melodies. Lastly Betaville gets the Timothy J Fairplay treatment of being violently pulled apart and chucked in all corners. Reminiscent of early Chemical Brothers music, a heavy beat slaps over agressive drugged up analog sound effects while a repetitive, haunting melody screams on top and reverberated vocals whisper in your ears. Scary.

A Winged Victory For The Sullen, the otherworldly collaboration between Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie and Dustin O Halloran, commence the New Year with their third full-length titled Iris available worldwide via Erased Tapes on January 13th 2017. Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie and Dustin O'Halloran first met the director Jalil Lespert after he had discovered A Winged Victory For The Sullen on a music search online. After listening to their music, he immediately knew: "it was the sound of my new film". With an excellent cast of France s finest actors Romain Duris, Charlotte Le Bon, and the director himself, plus a script filled with tension, sexuality and darkness, they knew there was a lot of musical territory to mine. It was agreed that they wanted to explore more analogue electronique experiments as well as working with a large string ensemble, to create something that felt very modern and still cinematic. The recording sessions began with their long time sound collaborator Francesco Donadello in the form of some modular synth sessions in Berlin. Dustin and Adam began working from the script in their own studios, and after filming commenced they continued to create music that could be used for first edits of the film each day getting new scenes that triggered ideas that would become the base of the film score. Over the course of the next few months the two slowly crafted the music with weekly discussion from their studio to the editing room. The final sessions to what is now the score of Iris were recorded with a 40-piece string orchestra at Magyar Radio in Budapest.

Although singer/guitarist/songwriter Aalon Butler is far from a major name in either soul or rock, serious connoisseurs of soul music remember him for four recordings released on the independent PKC label out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Butler was the lead singer of the New Breed Band with which he released two outstanding 45rpm singles. Their first release (It's Got To Be Something b/w Please Give Me A Chance) is a favorite in Northern Soul circles while their second release (Gettin Soul Pt.1 b/w Pt.2) has become a Deep-Funk anthem over the years. In 1969 the New Breed Band changed their name to A Different Bag and moved to Los Angeles, California, after a short stint in Memphis, Tennessee. They kept releasing 45s under their new name until they split up in around 1977. Key-selling points: limited to 300 copies, original label artwork, officially licensed

Adam Beyer and Ida Engberg come together to create a new track after the success of the highly acclaimed 'Lovecraft'.‘Unanswered Question' uses a weighty kick drum and a sensuous vocal before the track breaks into some groovy synth stabs. Julian Jeweil's remix of 'Unanswered Question' is a late night dubbed out version that compromises of a groove that pulsates throughout and falls into the original synth stabs before rising back into the funky, dubbed out groove. The final track 'Virga' is a more melodic techno offering that finishes the single off with a classy finish.

Aketi Ray are an all-acoustic dub-jazz group, playing original compositions grounded in the instrumental music of post-independence Jamaica -ska, rocksteady, reggae, rockers, dub -but drawing inspiration and influence from Ethiopian and US jazz, west African percussion traditions, all with the mind set of UK steppas. An outernational sound: Kingston to Chicago to Addis Ababa to Dakar to London. The sound of "From Ever Since" draws on the vibes and heritage of pre-electr(on)ic music, but gives that traditional sound new power through the use of dub techniques of reverb, delay and EQ manipulation. The Aketi Ray soundBand leader ‘Mikus’ Gorecki explains: “At the time I was listening to a lot of tuff digital dub tunes, and much as I love that sound still, I thought there was a lack of dubwise music getting made that had that live feel of the 60s and 70s. At the same time I didn’t want to just rehash the past – the best you can do is come close to replicating that sound, you definitely won’t beat it. So I decided to try something different, and bring in other connected jazz and African influences to the mix. ”“Sometimes when people fuse different music traditions it can sound a bit of a collage, the elements are all there but they don’t actually fuse together. I think we have our own sound, and it’s greater than the sum of its parts.” The compositions are forward-looking, form-pushing, and although there are no vocals, they are message-driven; concerned with conditions of modern life, spirituality and politics. Mikus says “The music definitely has a message. Each track has a very clear subject in mind when writing it, but it’s down to the listener to tune in to that and take from that what they will. I find you can say more with the abstract language of music than you can in words.”

In May 1976 a record was released that would have an unforeseen and lasting impact on the music industry “Ten Percent” by Double Exposure was an early release on the New York independent label Salsoul Records. America was in the grip of a disco explosion with new clubs opening on a weekly basis; Salsoul saw what was happening and swiftly created a sound for their label, heavily influenced by the music then coming out of Philadelphia, aimed directly at New York’s dance-floors. Records like “Salsoul Hustle,” “Tangerine” and “You’re Just The Right Size” by The Salsoul Orchestra borrowed heavily from the beautifully orchestrated Philadelphia International Records but added a more percussive, bass heavy depth that New York’s DJs loved. So what was so special about this particular single then? Double Exposure was, after all, just another band, “Ten Percent” just another song; one of many “disco” records released that week. First of all Salsoul became the first record label to make a twelve inch single available to Joe Public – the exotic format was previously only available to DJs as promotional items or bought under the counter at certain record stores. Not only that though, the extended version was created by Walter Gibbons, a DJ at New York’s Galaxy 21 who’d built his reputation making exclusive versions of tracks to play in his sets.In 1976 it was unheard of for a DJ to set foot in a recording studio, being seen as little more than living jukeboxes by the serious music industry. Recording studios were strictly the domain of recording artists and producers so Walter found himself in a unique position, gaining access to a world no DJ had been granted before.Or so we thought…The Men In The Glass Booth compiled by Al Kent tells the full story. Featuring ground breaking re-edits and remixes by some of the Disco era’s most influential DJs including Walter Gibbons, Bobby DJ Guttadaro, Tom Savarese, Jellybean Benitez, Tee Scott and John Luongo.Includes a 40 page booklet.

Al Massrieen: Disco, Funk and modernized Arabic Pop from EgyptIn the beginning of Habibi Funk, our search was focussed on vinyl records. Around a year ago though, we got to the point where we realized that it became substantially harder to discover music, that we enjoyed and hadn’t heard before. It became apparent that it was time to start looking for other formats. Cassette tapes were the obvious alternative. These were introduced in the arabic world around the late 1970s. In some countries they took over a bit earlier, in others a bit later, but eventually they pushed the vinyl format out of the market in the 1980s. In Egypt this trend already even started in the late 1970s.Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format for myself. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band’s versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him. Al Massrieen's sound goes from lush disco like “Sah” to psych rock like “Horreya” or incredible jazz fused pop on songs such as “Edba Mn Gded”. I was shocked to realize the band seemed to be hardly known outside Egypt, even though I feel they're at least on the same level as Ahmed Fakroun. An relative obscurity which I largely attribute to the fact that their releases never have been pressed on vinyl (apart from a Greece best of LP which wasn’t a strong compilation of the group’s songs). One way or another it felt like this band and especially their composer, band leader and overall brain Hany Shenoda was in need to get some recognition outside of Egypt. The release is fully licensed from the band and comes with an extensive booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos.

Al Zanders makes his debut on Phonica’s main label after a sold-out release on sister label Karakul and also Wolf Music, Blind Jack’s Journey and his own AZ label. The double A-side kicks off with ‘There is Rhythm’, a percussive house anthem with plenty of momemtum, a tom-tom bassline and ‘rhythm’ vocal samples and that’s even before the sun-soaked pads and euphoric synth stabs come in. On the flip, ‘Song About A Dream’ is far more of a collage - made of unconnected genres and styles, inspired by DJ Shadow - all tied together with the common theme of dreams. Shimmering astral keys and psychedelic guitar feature heavily alongside a vocalist and full choir; its a unique combination of different parts that show Al Zanders’ versatility - it really doesn’t sound like anything else.

After spending much of the ‘70s humping his congos around New York as a session musician, Nigerian Aleke Kanonu pulled in some favours to record an album of his own. The result was Aleke, a criminally obscure Afrobeat/Funk/Jazz masterpiece featuring Buddy Williams on drums, George Davis on guitar and a cameo from Wynton Marsalis on flugelhorn. There are only four tracks on the album but they are all killers. N’Gwode sounds like Fela Kuti and Manu Dibangu hanging out with Bobby Womack, probably somewhere across 110th Street. ‘Keep New York Clean’ struts like Shaft after a successful bust. And ‘Mothers Day’ keeps things sweet and soulful, before Wynton Marsalis brings back the groove with his flugelhorn on ‘Home Sweet Home’. Until recently you would have had to take out a second mortgage to get hold of Akele. And sold a kidney for the Happiness/Nwanne, Nwanne, Nwanne 12’’ Kanonu released a year later. Thankfully PMG has re-issued the LP and the EP, with the CD version containing both. - Peter Moore.

Despite a discography that stretches right back to the late noughties, little is known about Turkish producer Ali Kuru. Perhaps he’s publicity shy, or simply wants to let his music do the talking; either way, the music he makes is magical, and undoubtedly worthy of wider acclaim. Kuru came to the attention of Leng late last year, releasing the Luna 12” – his first vinyl release for six years – in January 2016. That EP boasted two typically exotic and fragrant tracks, both of which effortlessly joined the dots between dub disco, hazy house, gentle downtempo movements and snaking, Middle Eastern instrumentation.

Turkish mystery man Ali Kuru is fast becoming one of our go-to artists. Since joining the label in early 2016, he’s released two superb EPs, with a debut album of evocative musical blends – think dub, disco, downtempo grooves, humid exotica, and authentic middle eastern instrumentation – dropping in July.Ahead of the album release, we have decided to hand over the parts to a clutch of Kuru’s tracks to a hand picked team of remixers. Predictably, all have delivered, serving up versions that retain the essence of Kuru’s atmospheric productions, whilst taking the tracks in a variety of beguiling new directions.First to feature are cosmic disco pioneer Daniele Baldelli and production partner Dario Piana, fresh from dropping an inspired EP of their own on Leng. Their version of “Ashoka” successfully wraps feverish Persian instrumentation and vintage synthesizer chords around a rock-solid rhythm track and bold electronic bassline. The result is not so much ‘Afro-cosmic’, as ‘Arabic-cosmic’.Next up is long time friend of the label Craig Bratley, whose hypnotic, chugging interpretation of “Zurna” – all crispy snares, dubbed-out electronic motifs, exotic vocals and snaking lead lines – recalls the finest moments on his essential Magic Feet label. On the flip, you’ll find a pair of revisions from artists who made their name on Multi Culti, a label specializing in the kind of global dancefloor fusions that are near impossible to pigeonhole. First up is Nicola Cruz, who successfully transforms “Return To Paradise” via an intoxicating blend of loose cumbia rhythms, dub bass, lilting guitar lines and deep space effects. If Ali Kuru met Adrian Sherwood in Columbia for a jam session, it would probably sound a little like Cruz’s fabulous rework.Peter Power travels further towards the atmospheric depths on his version of “Lost Bedouin”. More horizontal and clandestine in town, the producer makes great use of Kuru’s haunting flute lines and evocative field recordings. The resultant remix is gentle in tone and tempo, but also ethereal in its’ druggy, early morning outlook. Like the other three tracks, it’s a very fine remix.

The Allergies' debut album introduced the world to the way they effortlessly fuse funk, soul, disco, hip-hop and breaks into dancefloor-ready nuggets of ear candy. Taking classic sounds and reshaping for the modern age is the signature that won them plaudits across the globe. Not ones to rest on their laurels, it hasn't taken long for them to deliver more of the goods on their second full-length album, 'Push On'. As well as taking the successful formula of the first record and expanding on the sound with raw Funk, Psych, Northern Soul, and Boogie influences, The Allergies enlisted two giants of underground Hip-Hop to bless mics on the album as well. After a hugely successful collaboration on their debut LP, once again the dynamic lyricism and production skills of the inimitable Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) are present and correct in this new collection. Besides bringing the party on tracks like 'Main Event', he also settles scores with 'It Won't Be Me', before destroying all-comers on the battle Rap behemoth, 'Buzzsaw'. Also joining in on the action is UK MC veteran, Dr Syntax (The Mouse Outfit, Foreign Beggars) who prescribes some more healthy Hip-Hop advice on the track 'Remedy'.Other highlights include the vintage Soul stomper, 'Entitled to That', Sixties uptempo groover, 'Hold You Close', and the fantastic little strutter, 'Get Down On You'. All in all it's a brand new set of future classics from your new favourite funky beatmakers, The Allergies.

Matt Thibideau aka Altitude releases his latest original EP on Lisbon's Helena records, cementing his return to the international scene. Anyone who has seen his all-analog live set will be on solid ground here among four extended deep-space soundscapes, which continue the legacy of his legendary Blue Recordings output. 'Transforming' is the slow, cavernous floorfiller with a growling bass of truly physical intensity, while 'Fractional's delayed chords and soft, skipping hi hats form the housiest moment of the record. 'Touch Sensor' and 'Tantalum' on the flip nod to the legacy of Mark & Moritz (still strong to this day): the former could be a long-lost Main Street dub, while the latter would not be out of place as a new entry in the M-series.

Contrasts have always been deep and at the very heart of Amenra, who have been uttering prayers and holding masses for eighteen years. Tormented darkness has always coexisted alongside luminous beauty, and thunderous impacts instantly follow frail, delicate subtleties. Songs that engulf everyone in the world suddenly feel whispered inside a solitary womb. Mass VI is here, and more than any other album in the band’s past, it highlights those contrasts. The eerie quiet of the first couple minutes of “Children Of The Eye” announces the coming storm, and the nine explosive, cathartic minutes that follow hold all the striking disparate emotions one expects from the band. This album is an emotional rollercoaster until its very last second, when “Diaken” abruptly ends at its very climax. Every band member is stretched to their physical limits throughout: Colin H. Vaneeckhout (vocals) puts in the performance of a lifetime, but he is inextricably intertwined to the guitar-work of Mathieu J. Vandekerckhove; Lennart Bossu expresses unimaginable weight, both physical and spiritual, as well as weaving melodies of the utmost delicacy; the rhythm section of Levy Seynaeve and Bjorn J. Lebon rumbles like a consuming thunderstorm or retreat to the shadows with flowing spontaneity. No love without pain. No life without death. No light without darkness. That is the conflict at the heart of the album and at the heart of what it means to be human, and this music wrenches that ambivalence out. It’s hard to think of a better person to capture this enormity than Billy Anderson. The legendary American producer was already the chosen one for Mass V, and between Neurosis’s Through Silver In Blood, Sleep’s Dopesmoker, and Eyehategod’s Dopesick, among many others, he’s been a decisive element in the building of many a true classic.

‘No Order’ is a “deeply emotional and darkly atmospheric track”. BillboardOnly three releases in and Kidnap Kid’s Birds That Fly is proving to be one of the most prominent UK labels with knockout releases so far coming from Kidnap Kid himself and Bristolian Applebottom. Keeping the standard sky high, this next offering comes as an epic double hitter from US native Amtrac.Caleb Cornett aka Amtrac has been pushing his creative limits as a producer, DJ, musician and vocalist since 2008. Through this release he skillfully creates feelings of elation and euphoria sharply contrasted with a moody and melancholic ambience. He explains how ‘No Order’ is like a movie score for the club, diving deeper with it’s dark atmosphere. Big ups to Kidnap Kid. I love the direction he’s taking with the label musically and aesthetically.”Raised in Kentucky but now based in LA, multi-talented artist Amtrac can electrify an audience with his moving live performance and his driving, funk-filled DJ sets. He recently released ‘Those Days’ featuring vocals from Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye on legendary UK label Toolroom Records followed by the ‘Lost In Motion’ EP, which really gave a snapshot of where he is at musically. Never content to settle, Amtrac’s musical mood and influences change with each passing season. His ambition and curiosity keep him locked on the edge, always happy to experiment with new techniques and sounds.

What would electronic music be without remixes? This is a question Andrew Claristidge had to answer last year after releasing his first solo album « danser ou mourir ».Reworking the song of an other musician is a common thing nowadays. What is the purpose of it ? What if we would do the same in literature ? Imagine asking Philip Roth to rewrite Houellebecq… This is pure fantasy and this came to Andrew´s head.He started asking fellow musicians such as The Hacker, Cosmo Vitelli, David Carretta…to remix his songs. Blown away by the quality of what he received he couldn’t stop himself to make its entire album « remixed » and to share it with the world in form of « danser ou mourir, relecture »

Applewood Road is singer-songwriters Emily Barker, Amber Rubarth and Amy Speace, who firstmet in Nashville in September 2014 where they wrote and recorded the song entitled “Applewood Road”. Six months later they reconvened to write twelve more songs and turn this exciting new collaboration into a full album project. Applewood Road’s soaring three part vocal harmonies have just the right degree of edge and precision while their finely crafted songs reflect deeply on their personal experiences and illustrate their special gifts for storytelling. Each song was recorded live to stereo tape, Emily, Amber and Amy singing together around one microphone with minimal accompaniment - the whole concept going right back to the beginning of recorded music. The tape was then mastered and cut for vinyl at Gearbox Records in London, keeping the 100% analogue chain throughout the whole process. Applewood Road made their live debut in Nashville during AmericanaFest 2015, and played dates and promo shows in the UK, including a live session for Dermot O'Leary's BBC Radio 2 show where they performed "Applewood Road" and REM's “Losing My Religion”.

The EPs vinyl only track 'Works On Sunday' switches gear, delving into deeper, headier territory with a more melodic leaning, an ethereal vocal snippet imbuing proceedings with a blissful feel whilst label staples Enzo Siragusa and Seb Zito take 'Works on Sunday' into a techier direction, toughening up the drums and roughing up the percussion on their remix...

Liverpool artist Stu Robinson aka ASOK steps up to Creme Organization with a debut full length offering, A Mind Forever Voyaging, due out spring 2016. Featuring ten tracks of macho yet melodic, tender yet tense analogue house and techno, it is a continuation of the fine work the Scenery Records boss has done for labels like M>O>S and Mistress in the last few years. Something of a late starter, Robinson has fomented his own mystical, nostalgic, inventive analogue sound that makes you jack, as well as conjuring real emotions with his great knack for melody. This album was recorded live then edited down. "So if something doesn't sound good it either stays in or I re-record the whole thing," says Robinson, who used things like Maschine, tb303, analog RYTM, JX-8P, Microkorg, some plugins and "a shit load of old rave samples" to create his debut full length. All written at home over a period of a year or so, it proves the artist has plenty of ideas and more than enough skills to carry them off. All unified by a sense of emotion and kinked dance floor groove that has been picked up over the course of 25 years of living and breathing many different forms of dance music, it is an accomplished debut.

The first ever reissue of "What Is This Thing Called 'Disco'?", a landmarkAustralian post-punk artefact originally released in 1981 as an LP withaccompanying 12" single. One of the first records from the Australianunderground to incorporate disco elements into the reigning post-punkasethetic, "What Is This Thing Called 'Disco'?" sits alongside records byinternational counterparts like Flying Lizards or Yellow Magic Orchestra inits combination of art school formalism and dancefloor hedonism.Melbourne artist Philip Brophy is best known for his work with 70s/80s artpunkprovocateurs Tsk Tsk Tsk (pronounced with three clicks of thetongue). Asked to stage an exhibition in Melbourne in 1980, Brophy decidedto put disco into an art gallery context. He created 'fake' band Asphixiationto mime on stage along to tape, and recorded "What Is This Thing Called'Disco'?" as the backing tracks. In 1981, iconic Melbourne label Missing Linkreleased a two song 12", and later that year the band released the albumthemselves, repressing the 12" and including it in the package. 36 yearslater, Chapter Music has lovingly remastered and reissued the album +single package, with new liner notes and photos.

Sam Purcell's Blank Mind is always juggling curve balls with what he releases, and we are really excited to catch this latest release BLNK008, a four track Gqom EP from Durban's AudioBoyz. It has taken Purcell several years to get the AudioBoyz on to wax, after discovering them several years ago online, and with this four track EP, it has been worth that wait. Coming from Riverdene in the Newlands West suburb of Durban, AudioBoyz are a crew of four, Fatonic, Motion, MudPunk and Njeh, who use tuned percussion and thundering clash electronics, to create raw and energetic music that is intoxicating and hypnotic. This South African scene has been lighting up the dance across the globe recently, championed by Kode9, Mumdance et al, as well as being released on Grime label Goon Club Allstars and the excellent Gqom Oh!, so we are looking forward to hearing these tunes deep on the dance floor someday soon.

First time out for this wildly raw dubplate, sister-recording to the Pablo master-rhythm, shot through with other-worldly, illusively allusive incantation.Surely that's Family Man stalking a sunken cavern, and his bro battering all seven shades out of his drum-kit, like Meters on fire; and Chinna on guitar, glazed and violent. The mixing rears up right in your face. Producer Gussie Clarke says Theophilus 'Easy Snappin' Beckford is playing piano, with the front removed so he can strum the strings (like he finally snapped) — but he credits the work overall to Augustus Pablo. Transferred from acetate — fuss-pots don't grumble, just be humble — though the flip brings a clutch of criss, unmissable alternates, direct from Gussie's tape-room (where the files are entitled ‘Classical Illusion / The Sun’). Heavy, heavy funk. Simplicity People dug in. Stunning.
