In 1955, Miles Davis played a beautifully received set at the Newport Jazz Festival and was offered a contract with Columbia Records if he could get a steady group together. In order to record for Columbia, Davis would first have to settle an obligation to Prestige and so he put together the now legendary quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. It was under these conditions, in a desire to churn out as many records as possible to change labels, that Davis recorded some of the most celebrated music of his entire career. This group, in the span of several months released a half-dozen LPs including this one and the great Cookin’, Workin’, etc. titles. This title, originally recorded in 1955 features a great Ellington piece, the brilliant Miles original “The Theme”, and several other great tunes, but most importantly it is the introduction to a group that features two towering giants of jazz together on some of the fieriest playing of either’s career. Brilliant.

Lift to the Scaffold or, in the original French title, Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, is a brilliant film noir from 1958 that helped to establish the Nouvelle Vague and the New Modern Cinema scenes. No less brilliant is the score, composed by Miles Davis and featuring mostly French musicians, including the great Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, as well as Kenny Clarke on drums, this is some of the most lonesome and morose music Davis recorded in his career. Perfectly matching the stark, dangerous, and grim moods of the film, this is a truly amazing score by one of the biggest names in jazz music history.

It's 1964 and the first Berlin Jazz Festival is about to reach its absolute peak: the final concert on the night of Friday, 25th September by Miles Davis. And the European subsidiary of Columbia Records, CBS, couldn’t wait to release this legendary event on LP.The new quintet, for the first time with Wayne Shorter on the tenor sax (and not yet as composer), thrilled and roused the audience in the Philharmonie from the first minute to the very end. The classics "Miles(tones)", "So What" and "Walkin’" were performed at an astonishingly fast pace, the ballads were tender and dreamy. Such a magical atmosphere was rarely evoked at later concerts, which was probably due to the excellent acoustics of the large concert hall. The audience were also seated behind the stage, so Miles couldn't turn his back provokingly on people; sometimes he just squatted on the stage. However, this didn’t prevent him from performing his solos lyrically and tenderly, most of them finely nuanced, soft and gentle, yet audible right into the furthest corner. The rhythmic structure created by the young drummer Anthony Williams provided the necessary excitement.Miles at the top of his form, an enthusiastic audience, impressive acoustics and, to top it all, excellent recording technology and a fantastic pressing on virgin vinyl - what more does a jazz fan want? Now’s the time to dig out your credit card! This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

Agharta was recorded on the afternoon in 1975, at one of two concerts Miles Davis performed at the Osaka Festival Hall in Japan. "As the 1960s came to a close, Miles Davis hadbegun to drift away from traditional jazz music, as hissecond ""quintet"" period reached an end. He hadbeen toying with jazz fusion in live settings, and onhis two 1968 releases Miles In The Sky and Filles deKilimanjaro. Then came 1969's In A Silent Way, anexperimental work of jazz music, clocking in at nearly40 minutes, stretched across four tracks. An albumwhich featured revolutionary production and editingtechniques, (Courtesy of frequent Davis producerand collaborator Teo Macero) and contributions frommany of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, among them were Herbie Hancock on keys, WayneShorter on saxophone, Tony Williams on drums, andthen newcomer John McLaughlin, who would go onto form the acclaimed Mahavishnu Orchestra. With such an eclectic sound, and a stunning array oftalent, contemporary reviewers didn't know at firstwhat to think of In A Silent Way. Many jazz criticsconsidered Davis' merging of genres to be a betrayalof tradition, while rock critics reacted ecstatically.(Rolling Stone's own Lester Bangs once referred toIn A Silent Way as ""the kind of album that gives youfaith in the future of music."") Over time criticalreception to the album improved dramatically, andthe album is largely considered one of Davis' finestachievements, and a significant piece of jazz history. An album that foresaw where the genre was headedand gleefully embraced the future, setting the stagefor greater things to come, as Miles Davis enteredthe 1970s."

The Miles Davis Quintet underwentinnumerable lineup and personnel changesduring the decade and a half they wereactive, but most jazz scholars agree that oneof his greatest configurations was his"Second Great Quintet", an astoundinglineup which featured Wayne Shorter onsaxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, RonCarter on bass, Tony Williams on drums, andof course Davis himself. In 1966, Davisreleased the album Miles Smiles onColumbia Records, which would be thesecond of five albums he’d record with thisconfiguration, and is now considered one ofhis greatest efforts. A jazz traditionalist formuch of his career, Miles Smiles astoundedcritics, who were hard up to categorize thehybrid of bop and free jazz that his quintethad put forth, which was full of free-roamingimprovisation, eccentric time signatures, andprogressive modal and chordal harmonies.Nonetheless it was widely praised for itsinstrumental mastery, its innovativecompositions, and the chemistry betweenthe band members.

Late 1962 and early 1963 were a period of transition for Miles Davis. He had health issues and his original quintet from the 1950s was on its last legs. He played with a variety of hired hands while working on assembling a new quintet. Seven Steps To Heaven collected various recordings from LA and New York, and the New York recordings are particularly interesting because they feature the 17 year old Tony Williams, as well as Ron Carter, and Herbie Hancock, 3 of the brilliant players that would make up Davis’ working Quintet for the next several years. While comprised of various players and sessions, Seven Steps To Heaven is still a beautiful album from the legendary trumpet player well worthy of inclusion among his finest works.

In 1957, Miles Davis is in Paris for an engagement at the Club Saint-Germain and a wonderful concert at the Olympia Theatre. Once in Paris, Miles came into contact with many members of the modern existentialist cultural environment in the neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Près. These include the director Louis Malle who had just finished his first movie : "Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud". Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a Jazz fan and Louis Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's soundtrack. A private sceening has been organized. On December 4 1957, Miles Davis brought three French Jazzmen - Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass and his american compatriot Kenny Clarke on drums - to the recording studio Le Poste Parisien without having them prepare anything. Miles Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room. This recording was made at night in a most informal atmosphere. The soundtrack was not released on it's own in the USA but ten songs from this soundtrack were released as one side of the album "Jazz Track" which received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo or Small Group."Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud" has become a great achievement of artistic excellence.

Scorned by critics at the time of its release, Miles Davis' 1972 album 'On The Corner' is now seen as a forerunner of Post Punk, Hip Hop, Drum and Bass and Electronic music, thanks to its revolutionary recording techniques. Miles wanted to reconnect with a younger audience, who had forsaken him for Rock and funk, and the experimental On The Corner was his answer. Leaning more heavily on a drum and bass groundwork, the overdubs consisted of free improvisations held in the studio. On The Corner' isn't one of Miles easiest records to listen to, but it can yield the most fruits. Now released with completely re-mastered audio.

Featuring the majority of the band that would, a year later, release the absolute pinnacle of modal jazz, Kind Of Blue, Davis brought his group to the Newport festival in 1958 for a brilliant performance. Though the group doesn’t play any songs from that record, instead focusing on classics like "Straight No Chaser", and "Bye Bye Blackbird" one can hear the whispers of that LP. Essential live jazz from the greatest trumpet player of all time, Miles Davis.

Miles Davis was one of the all-time greatest interpreters of standards and with the arrangements from Evans, this album might be the best example of Davis' interpretive prowess. Miles Davis and his electric group of the early 70s is some of the most innovative and important jazz music ever set to tape. While the studio recordings are amazing, they often pale in comparison to the loose, improvisational and fiery heights that the group could reach in front of a live audience (as was captured on Live-Evil, In Concert, and Miles Davis At Fillmore, among others). This set from September of 1972 is no exception. Recorded just prior to the release of On The Corner, this stellar performance features tracks from that classic as well as Jack Johnson, and Bitches Brew. Featuring the great guitar work of his live band staple, Reggie Lucas, and the phenomenal saxophonist Carlos Garnett, this is early 70s electric Miles at its finest, a brilliant radio broadcast released in a limited edition pressing on blue vinyl with white splatter.

Following the recordings in 1949 and 1950 that would comprise Birth Of The Cool and help create the sub-genre of Cool Jazz, Miles had already moved on to the next thing, because that's what an innovator does. By 1951 he was recording hard-bop of the highest order on a variety of formats, including 10" and 7". This LP compiles a number of those recordings into one 12" LP, and the fact that the entire record was recorded on one day, October 5, 1951, would be surprising if it weren't the one and only Miles Davis. Featuring a crack band that included Art Blakey, and Jackie McLean in his very first recording session, this is classic 50s Miles hard-bop of the highest order. Reissued on 180 gram LP with download code.

A fabulous quintet, directed by the great ‘Miles’, including ‘Hank Mobley’ on tenor sax, ‘Wynton Kelly’ on piano, ‘Paul Chambers’ along with ‘Jimmy Cobb’ on drums and bass, which met the brilliant and innovative orchestra of 21 elements directed by the Canadian arranger ‘Gil Evans’ to give life to a concert of modern jazz marked in history!!! Among the songs in the lineup are the classics of the repertoire of those years such as ‘Miles So What’, ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’, ‘Walkin ', ‘Oleo’, ‘I Thought About You’ etc ., along with a version of more than 17 minutes of the adagio section ‘Concert of Aranjuez’, one of the most memorable moments of the entire concert !!!

The recording on this release was made the night before Black Beauty was recorded, albeit at the same venue, with the same line-up (Davis, Corea, Grossman, Holland, De Johnette and Airto Moreira on percussion) and also as support to the Dead (and Stone the Crows). This April 9th gig however is a different beast to that of its predecessor. A differing set-list and very sparse arrangements, absent the night before, make this previously unreleased recording very much a ‘lost broadcast’ (it was transmitted live by local FM radio) and will delight fans of Davis’ mid period work.

Originally released in 1974, Big Fun presents music from three different phases of Miles Davis's early-seventies "electric" period. Sides one and four ("Great Expectations" and "Lonely Fire") were recorded three months after the Bitches Brew sessions and incorporate sitar, tambura, tabla, and other Indian instruments. "Ife" was recorded after the 1972 On the Corner sessions, and the framework is similar to tracks from that record. Recorded in March 1970, "Go Ahead John" is an outtake from Davis's Jack Johnson sessions.
