Noah Anthony walks the line between dark pop and noise on the new Profligate LP, Somewhere Else. In doing so, he weaves minimal beats, synthesizer, electric bass, hushed vocals and sheets of droning noise into something larger than the sum of its parts. First single “Enlist” acts as the album’s centrifuge—a flashing synth and electric bass drive the track directly into a thrilling accelerando where the instruments swirl madly. This track is the peak of the album’s fevered middle third, which pushes the more meditative songs to Somewhere Else’s more languid bookends. The glacial title track achieves grandness by pairing hyper-detailed and minimal instrumentation with gorgeous vocals by Anthony and L.A. poet/musician ELAINE KAHN framed by an arrangement that allows a spacious build. “Black Plate” is the dark pop moment here, featuring airy lead vocals from Kahn above a stately beat all leading toward the refrain, “Touch what’s sweet like / There is no one home.” Anthony’s live bass is in full force on this track with jazzy figures that respond to Kahn’s careful phrasing—if you’ve seen Profligate in the last year you know the bass is the secret weapon. These are just three tracks on this diverse collection that nonetheless feels like a cohesive song cycle. Somewhere Else deftly balances seeming opposites—chaos and composition, melody and noise, programmed and live instrumentation, all with a distinctly human touch.

Coca Leaf was a collaborative birthed in the hot Florida swamp years ago. "Deep Marble Sunrise" was sculpted from a series of brain-fried studio sessions in NYC taking place in the summer 2015. The manic ramping-up & the inevitable come-down intertwine here. The party & the empty vaccuum that follows. For this LP, the group is comprised of multi-instrumentalists ZZ Ramirez (Ukiah Drag), David Vassalotti & Carson Cox (Merchandise), & Ben Greenberg (Hubble). The cuts follow their impulses freely, coming up with a strange combination of hard funk, jazz, noise, no-wave, free improvisation, & dub.

Bambara - Shadow On Everything
Shadow On Everything
LP | 2018 | US | Original (Wharf Cat)
21,99 €*
Release:2018 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Shadow on everything, the third LP by Bambara and their first for Wharf Cat Records, represents a decisive step forward for the NYC-via-Georgia trio. Frontman Reid Bateh, drummer Blaze Bateh, and bassist William Brookshire have always been adept students of noise rock and post-punk, mining the work of bands like Swans and the Birthday Party to construct what NPR called their “beautifully dynamic nightmares.” Now, they’ve transcended their early influences to produce a western gothic concept album that sounds as big as the desert sky looming over its characters’ lives. As with all previous Bambara releases, the musical center of shadow on everything is its impossibly tight rhythm section. Blaze’s frenzied yet metronomic drumming and William’s prominent bass lines have plenty of personality on their own, but they also provide a perfect canvas for Reid’s wild guitar squalls and howled vocals. While Reid’s lyrics have always been a critical part of Bambara’s songs, his voice is pushed to the front of the mix on shadow, placing his damaged characters and seedy locales at center stage. A stridently experimental record, Shadow features everything from violin to cornet arrangements, and is meticulously interspersed with outré ambient noise loops distilled down from hours of manipulated vocal collages that the band sifts through to find the perfect textures.
Holy Motors - Slow Sundown

Genre:Rock / Indie
2017’s equal parts somnambulant and sultry "Sleeprydr" 7” was aptly described as “psychedelic rock that hits like a dream despite undoubtedly seeking to soundtrack nightmares” (Stereogum). Thankfully, Slow Sundown, HOLY MOTORS’ debut full length release, finds the Estonian dreamcatchers utilizing a similar sonic palette ranging from dark psychedelic pop to shoegaze-inflected Western music. But while "Sleeprydr," much like 2015’s "Heavenly Creatures" 7”, provided only a fleeting glimpse into the dreamscape that their music evokes, Slow Sundown’s eight tracks offer a more immersive experience for those brave enough to take the ride. While the guitar lines from lonely cowboy ballads like “Honeymooning” could easily serve as the central themes for unwritten Morriccone scores, dystopian anthems like the rhythmically propelled “Signs” break new ground for the band and demonstrate that Holy Motors are not bound by their influences. Thematically the album is comprised primarily of sad love songs centered around the idea of motion—the motion of a satellite orbiting a planet, the motion of a passenger riding shotgun in a car—as it relates to stellar-scale and existential isolation. Produced by Merchandise's Carson Cox and recorded at Brooklyn’s Kutch1 Studios when the band was visiting the US on tourist visas, Slow Sundown is a beautiful alien artifact that definitively delivers on everything we have been promised by Holy Motors’ work to date.

Big French have returned, following up their maverick 2013 debut LP Downtown Runnin with Stone Fish, a 16-track sophomore full-length that sees bandleader Quentin Moore's energetic bursts of post-punk composition transformed by boutique, reel-to-reel production to fantastic ends, filtering established pop sensibilities through eclectic idioms of free-expression. On Stone Fish—the band’s third release for Wharf Cat Records—Moore shares co-production credits alongside longtime collaborator Zach Phillips (Blanche Blanche Blanche, OSR Tapes) and orchestrates electric performances from band members Colin White, Adam Steck, Jo Miller-Gamble, as well as a cameo appearance from Ausin Julian (The Sediment Club, Sunk Heaven).

Holy Motors sound like the bastard love child of Hope Sandoval and Ennio Morricone born in the back of a ‘67 Trans Am and raised on nothing but Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. Their sound lies somewhere between the wind with a vibrato and the soundtrack to a non-existent movie.

These tracks are constructed from spliced disco rhythms, modulated synth lines, and searing guitars with Sam and Carson’s fevered vocals pulsing from all sides. This vinyl release is sure to become a collector’s item by what could accurately be described as a contemporary audio-visual dream team.

Providence, RI's Cottaging (who have ties to both AMERICAN SNAKESKIN & UKIAH DRAG) return with the extra crispy "Headhunter" b/w "Mamajuana Nightcap"! It's been almost a year since the release of the now sold out "The Amyl Banshee EP" & the subsequent tour that saw the band convert even more contemporary music listeners with their pummeling live act & singular wild western apocalyptic style. Featuring hand screened jackets by The Sultan. "Rachel Lewallen's queasy saxophone squall assumes the foreground & begins to spar with spindly, serpentine guitar leads. It sounds like a bout of musical shadowboxing. The gripping passage gleans more weight from the lyrics: a tale of besties Snakecharmer & Headhunter, dancing in diabolical solidarity." - Pitchfork

A common theme emerged among much of the press for Ancient Sky's 2012 LP, "T.R.I.P.S.". This band, listeners agreed, does psychedelic rock right. Embracing equal parts Psychic Ills, Moon Duo & Hawkwind, they embrace psychedelic expanse without sacrificing rock's raw power. With its 8 songs across 41 minutes, "All Get Out" gives its songs has plenty of room to breathe, & the more spacious textures featured on this album suit that sensibility. But it's still a concise album, free from aimless pedal tapping & lethargic repetition.
