Light In The Attic Records is proud to present Nancy Sinatra: Start Walkin’ 1965–1976. The definitive new collection surveys Sinatra’s most prolific period over 1965–1976, including her revered collaborations with Lee Hazlewood, over 23 tracks.

Remastered from the original analog tapes by GRAMMY®–nominated engineer John Baldwin, the collection is complemented by liner notes penned by Amanda Petrusich (author and music critic at The New Yorker), featuring insightful new interviews with Sinatra, as well as a Q&A with archivist and GRAMMY®–nominated reissue co-producer, Hunter Lea. The CD edition comes housed in a 7”x7” hardcover book (featuring 64–pages) and the two-disc vinyl set is presented in a gatefold jacket (featuring a 24–page booklet).

Nancy’s performance of the Lee Hazlewood–penned song “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’” was a huge hit in 1966 and became her signature tune. The pair began a three year run of successful albums, duets, and singles including “Sugar Town,” “Some Velvet Morning,” “Summer Wine,” “Sand,” “Jackson,” and the title track to the 1967 James Bond film “You Only Live Twice.”

Start Walkin’ explores Nancy’s recordings with Lee, her inspired collaborations with songwriter Mac Davis (“Hello L.A., Bye Bye Birmingham”), producer Lenny Waronker (“Hook and Ladder”), and the “should’ve been hit” song with arranger/producer Billy Strange (“How Are Things In California.”)

Over the years, she has been cited as an influence by countless artists, including Sonic Youth, Morrissey, Calexico, U2, and Lana Del Rey. Her haunting song “Bang, Bang” gained a new legion of fans when it appeared in the opening credits of Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 film, Kill Bill Volume 1.

Françoise Madeleine Hardy became an international sensation during the early 1960s through her popular releases on Disques Vogue, the French jazz label that began showcasing chanson. Born in 1944 and raised in a single-parent household in the bustling Opera district of Paris, she had little contact with her father, though his gift of a guitar when she graduated high school aided her musical development. Charles Trenet and Cora Vaucaire were early influences, along with Elvis, Cliff Richard, The Everley Brothers, Paul Anka, Marty Wilde and Connie Francis, as heard on Radio Luxembourg. Answering a newspaper ad recruiting unknown singers while a freshman at the Sorbonne, Hardy signed to Disques Vogue in late 1961, scoring an instant success with single B-side, “Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles”, which brought her to the forefront of the Yé-yé movement, melding chanson with Anglophone rock and pop. Mon Amie La Rose, her fourth album, was released in 1964; backed by the Charles Blackwell orchestra, it contains “Dans Le Mode Entier”, which became a huge chart hit in English as “All Over The World.”

Few would argue with Frank Sinatra’s pole position in popular music. From the dark days of World War II to the fall of the Berlin Wall, Sinatra’s voice has always been there as the soundtrack to our lives. Such was his pre-eminence as icon and actor,
that Sinatra’s status as a pop star is often overlooked. That omission is rectified here, with the release of The Singles Collection - 42 tracks bookending a decade of Sinatra hits, covering the period 1953-1962. Enjoy this magnificent compilation including "Three Coins In The Fountain", "Sentimental Journey" and "Young At Heart".

This is the story of two sisters who nurtured a dream for half a century and never let it die. Vicki and Ronni Gossett launched their musical career as teenagers in Whittier, California in 1966. They called themselves the Female Species. Members came and went; their base of operations moved to Las Vegas, back to LA, and over to Nashville. Along the way their sound transformed from garage rock to lounge to countrypop, the only constant being an innate mastery of hooks and harmony. These ladies had it.

Along the way, they crossed paths with The Carpenters, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The Judds, and seemingly half of the industry’s power players, rebuffing all untoward advances, focused always on their craft. In the 1980s they became staff songwriters for music publishing companies in the hit-making business. Relentless pushing landed them a once in a lifetime audition before the court of RCA’s top executives — the kind of new talent showcase that almost never happens after 30. Vicki and Ronni were by then in their 40s.

Tale of My Lost Love is the whole story from beginning to end of two sisters who gave everything to their dream, yet never made a single record... until now. Sometimes great music just isn’t enough to break through — until it is. Numero Group is thrilled and proud, at long last, to introduce Female Species.

That’ll Be The Day, a Buddy Holly song, and In Spite Of All The Danger, the only song co-written by Paul McCartney and George Harrison, are taken from a 78rpm shellac disc recorded live in one day, between spring and summer of 1958, by The Quarry Men (the proto-band of The Beatles, featuring John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, along with John Lowe on piano, and Colin Hanton on drums) at Phillips Sound Recording Service (a low-fi home recording studio in Liverpool). Cayenne was written by Paul McCartney and recorded at his home between spring and summer of 1960 by the four guitar line-up of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Stuart Sutcliffe. Ain’t She Sweet, a 1927 song by Ager & Yellen, was recorded in Hamburg on 22 June 1961 by George, John, Paul, and Pete Best under the band name Beat Brothers, the supporting group for vocalist Tony Sheridan. The Beatles recorded Love Me Do three times in 1962 — on 6 June, and 4 and 11 September — and on each occasion with a different drummer. The first, featuring Pete Best, remained unissued, while the latter two, featuring Ringo Starr and session player Andy White respectively, were issued on record. Besame Mucho, a 1940 song by Consuelo Velazquez, was recorded at Abbey Road at the same session as Love Me Do on 6 June 1962 with Pete Best on drums. How Do You Do It by Mitch Murray was recorded at Abbey Road at the same session as Love Me Do on 4 September 1962 with Ringo Starr on drums. On 11 September 1962 George Martin had arranged for Andy White, a session drummer, to occupy the beat seat, which came as quite a shock to the Beatles and especially to Ringo, who had joined the group less than four weeks earlier, and wondered if this was a sign of things to come. As it happened, this was to be the only occasion where Ringo was replaced in such a fashion. All songs taken from this session are written by Lennon & McCartney. Love Me Do, with Ringo Starr on tambourine, P.S. I Love You, which became the Side B of the first Beatles 7”, and Please Please Me, featuring different lead and harmony vocals, a different drum track, and no harmonica. The One After 909, I Saw Her Standing There, and Catswalk were taken from their September 1962 live performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. Please Please Me and Ask Me Why, co-written by Lennon & McCartney, were recorded at Abbey Road on 26 November 1962, and became their second single. On 31 December 1962 the Beatles were in Hamburg for the last time, performing, among others, the Lennon/McCartney song I Saw Her Standing There and Carl Perkin’s masterpiece Lend Me Your Comb, written by Twomey, Wise & Weisman. Despite the poor sound quality, these live recordings are significant historical documents, which is why they are included here.

If you went down the wrong alleyway, took a shortcut through the park or crossed the wrong open space after dark in the UK in the 1970s, you stood a fair chance of being accosted by someone with a big mouth, low morals and some gurning mates to impress, usually reeking of fags and cheap booze and always ready to put the boot in. And, before you could say, “sickening violence”, a short but chaotic scuffle would ensue and a winner eventually emerge, battle scarred and bruised. The boot boy was the worst kind of hooligan. There wasn’t anything you could do or say to appease him. You had the same chance as a fly caught up in a spider’s web. Zero. Your best bet was to run. His intent was always to give you, and vicariously the rest of the world, a good kicking. Thugs, long-haired louts, short-haired louts; the anti-hippy. Birds, booze, bovver and football on their criminal minds. So fasten your braces for a white knuckle-duster ride. 14 bovver rock bruisers for all of you peace-loving losers. Somebody’s going to get their head kicked in tonight... Put the boot in.

This should become a movie soundtrack classic.

Aspiring Welsh pop singer Leonard Davies became Larry Page in the mid-1950s, when Columbia Records issued his material on 78s and 45s, including a cover of Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be The Day”; he also played banjo in the Crane River Jazz Band. Known as “Larry Page the Teenage Rage,” he toured Britain with Cliff Richards and regularly appeared on national television. Shifting to a management and record production role in the early 1960s, he struck gold in 1964 upon signing a management contract with a band called The Ravens, who he re-named The Kinks, which swiftly became one of the most popular acts of the day. Noting that Rolling Stones producer Andrew Loog Oldham had formed his own orchestra to cut orchestrated versions of Stones hits, Page put together the Larry Page Orchestra for debut disc, Kinky Music, which similarly reconfigured the Kinks’ work. A pleasant romp through first-phase Kinks classics, it is also noteworthy as an early showcase for future Led Zeppelin guitarist, Jimmy Page.

Hard to believe that the group had only been together a year when they came to record this timeless classic. Long after its release, many fans believe the Zombies’ album recorded at Abbey Road worthy of comparison to Sgt. Pepper… Released in April 1968, Odessey & Oracle was largely ignored on its release – though today original copies sell for £500. Odessey & Oracle is widely hailed as one of the key albums of the late 60s - and was ranked No.80 in the Rolling Stone poll for the Greatest Albums Of All Time.

Genre:Pop
To define in a nutshell the music of Harry Nilsson in accordance with his personality can easily become a fiasco. The American singer-songwriter might well share his reputation as a multi-talented eccentric with a number of other musicians. However, his highly unusual style and his »satirical catchy pop songs [composed] with the sparkling eye of a cynic and the tearful eye of a nostalgic« (rororo Rock Lexicon) cannot be pigeonholed. Nilsson packaged derisive lines, spiced with a pinch of self-irony, in suspiciously pleasing yet carefully selected tunes. His cultivated and astonishingly supple voice basked to the full in bittersweet phrases, aided by elaborate, melting, slushy arrangements with strings and winds. Several of the wonderfully fresh numbers from "Aerial Ballet" reached top places in the charts. "Everybody’s Talkin’" became world-famous through its use in the film "Asphalt Cowboy" and brought Nilsson his first Grammy award. The song "One" soared to the top ten of the charts. The other light and airy songs now invite you to create your very own hit list. Every single number makes great listening!

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

Connoisseurs of 1960s she-pop have been very well served by Ace Records, particularly those with a predilection for American and British artists. But good music, of course, is not exclusive to the English-speaking world, as those familiar with our collections devoted to the female vocalists of Italy will be aware (not to mention similar projects focusing on Japan, France, Sweden, Hungary and Spain). In a country renowned for its song festivals, most notably the prestigious event held annually in Sanremo, highly orchestrated ballads have always been especially popular in Italy. For this celebratory single, however, we present exemplary uptempo decks by Brunetta and Rita Pavone.

Brunetta was one of the first Italian singers to record rock’n’roll. Among her early releases were the appropriately titled “The Explosive Brunetta” and “Ciclone Brunetta” EPs and the frantic ‘Precipito’, which she performed with wild abandon in the film Urlatori Alla Sbarra. New stars Mina and Adriano Celentano also appeared in the movie, so she was in very good company. Fast forward a few lower-profile years, she released the record for which she would become best remembered. Backed by the Balubas combo, she performed the somewhat non-PC ‘Baluba Shake’ at the Pesaro Song Festival in 1966, scooping top prize. These days, the track is an underground dancefloor favourite, original copies of which change hands for a pretty penny.

Sandie Shaw was one of the most successful British female singers of the 1960s, forever famous for winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1967 with “Puppet On A String”. She dominated the UK charts with a flood of pop hits during the late 1960s – including three number one singles – yet ventured into a funkier direction with this her fifth studio album. This was Shaw’s first time producing an album herself and she chose songs by alternative artists from the 1960s with covers of tracks by The Beatles, Rufus Thomas, Lovin’ Spoonful, Dr. John, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and what, on release in 1969, was the first ever cover of a Led Zeppelin song (Your Time Is Gonna Come). Her sensual voice and a strong backing band, featuring Ian Wallace of King Crimson on drums, gives these classic tunes a new lease of life. This release features the long lost mono mix of the original album plus a second disc of bonus material from the same sessions, including versions of Paul McCartney’s ‘Junk’ and ‘Frank Mills’ from the Broadway show Hair, collected together on vinyl for the first time.

“The Shaggs are like castaways on their own musical island” – Bonnie Raitt “The Shaggs convince me that they’re the real thing when they sing” – Jonathan Richman “They bring my mind to a complete halt” – Carla Bley

When The Shaggs’ Philosophy Of The World came out in 1969, some people couldn’t or wouldn’t understand it. But many musicians, including Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain, cited the Shaggs as a major influence. Heck, Zappa exclaimed they were “better than the Beatles!” NRBQ’s Terry Adams and Keith Spring were such fans, and after reissuing Philosophy in 1980 on their own Red Rooster label, Adams began work on a collection of recordings the Wiggin sisters had made in the years following their debut. The result was Shaggs’ Own Thing – a beguiling follow-up that reveals a more developed and mature sound while still retaining all of their homespun uniqueness.

“The songs were better and they were recorded better, so it naturally made a better album,” Dot Wiggin said shortly after the original release of Shaggs’ Own Thing in 1982. It’s a “natural, organic extension” of the utterly original sound that The Shaggs had created, intentionally or not, with Philosophy Of The World, as John DeAngelis writes in the new liner notes. While Dot Wiggins originals like “You’re Somethin’ Special To Me” and “My Cutie,” and covers of classic songs like “Yesterday Once More” reveal a maturity not displayed on the debut, the two versions of “Shaggs’ Own Thing” and the revisiting of “My Pal Foot Foot” show that The Shaggs lost none of their pure and honest charm over the years.

Remastered from the original tapes with liner notes by John DeAngelis, this reissue includes the bonus track “Love at First Sight,” first issued on the 1988 Red Rooster/Rounder Shaggs CD and appears on LP for the first time, plus three additional tracks on CD: “Sweet Maria” and “The Missouri Waltz,” first released by Light In The Attic as a limited-edition Record Store Day 45 in 2016, and the previously unreleased cover of the classic surf instrumental “Wipe Out.”

FRANCE GALL was a prolific French vocalist and performer, remembered as one of the central figures of the 1960s yé-yé pop movement. Aligning catchy, spirited rhythms with lighthearted lyrics and drawing from the beat music a la early Beatles and Hollies, the yé-yé artists promoted a sort of new freedom of expression and breaking down of social barriers in post-WWII France. Third Man Records is beyond honored to bring this music to a larger audience by issuing the first authorized North American vinyl pressings of these titles, some of the most brilliant highlights from Gall’s catalog. While France Gall had been releasing music since she was 16 it wasn’t until she took the Grand Prix at the 1965 Eurovision Song Contest with her rendition of Serge Gainsbourg’s “Poupée de Cire, Poupée de Son” that she would be catapulted to the top of the swinging yé-yé scene alongside the likes of Francoise Hardy, Sylvie Vartan and Bridgette Bardot. This record contains two of France’s most loved tracks, “Poupée de Cire” and “Laisse Tomber Les Filles” also penned by Gainsbourg. She recorded versions of the title track in French, German, Italian and Japanese and was now an international pop superstar. At the time France was dismissed by many as making fluffy ultra commercial pop hits but her music stands the test of time far better than most, as not many were making music of this consistent high quality. Highly recommended. 180-gram vinyl pressing in direct-to-board jackets.

Booklet with liner notes and rare archive photos Includes previously unreleased tracks When Seattle-based recording engineer Kearney Barton died in 2012, the 80 year-old studio veteran had spent the past 50 years recording the cream of the Seattle music scene through the decades. The Fleetwoods, Quincy Jones, The Ventures, The Wailers, The Sonics, Ann Wilson (Heart), The Frantics, The Kingsmen, and Dave Lewis to name a few. Barton also captured Seattle’s vibrant 1960s-70s R&B and soul scene, including Black On White Affair and Soul Swingers, among others, as documented in Light in the Attic’s Wheedle’s Groove series. In his later years Barton’s old school reputation drew in contemporary bands like Young Fresh Fellows, The Smugglers, The Minus 5, and The A-Bones into his studio. Essentially, when a local unknown band wanted to make a demo tape, or record their debut album, or perhaps someone just wanted to capture their uncle playing banjo or their kid sister’s first songs, they’d go to Barton’s studio.
There were 7,000 reel-to-reel tapes piled up in Barton’s house at the time of his passing. The University of Washington carefully cataloged these tapes, and former Sub Pop employee Dan Trager (who had learned the art of recording from Kearney years earlier as a student) began listening and taking notes. With input from a team drawn from the university and Light in the Attic, Dan compiled a shortlist of essential tracks that would form the basis of this compilation.
Kearney Barton: Architect of the Northwest Sound is a comprehensive document of Seattle in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. It is also a testament to Barton’s life-long dedication to the art of recording. It includes long out of print recordings originally released by local labels such as Jerden, Topaz, Piccadilly, and Etiquette Records. It covers a wide range of genres: sitar and balalaika players, gospel church choirs, unknown garage bands, steel drums, obscure soul artists and teenage a cappella singers. There’s also some familiar names here: Sonics, Wailers, a young pre-Heart Ann Wilson, Larry Coryell making his first ever studio recordings with Chuck Mahaffay, the Hudson Brothers long before they were on TV.
“However diverse, there is a commonality that stands out among his recordings: hardcore analog fidelity,” says University of Washington archivist John Vallier. “It sounds like you are in the room with the drums, bass, guitar, and vocals. The mix is minimum. It’s a raw, sonic reality, even if the band is poppy and jangly. It’s an honest sound that doesn’t sugarcoat what’s being performed. That’s Kearney, too.”

All 12 of the Deram non-album singles sides collected in chronological order for the first time
A rare demo recording of the band’s first single A-side is also included

Liner notes by Andy Morten (Shindig!), with rare archive photos and memorabilia Released in March 1968, and included here, 'I Can't Let Maggie Go' became the third Honeybus single and the one which would ensure their place in the history books. The single hit number 8 in the UK and became a huge hit worldwide. And still Honeybus remain a unique group in so many ways. Their legacy has become cherished more and more, its quiet majesty singling them out from the few contemporaries they had. While plaudits for the group’s sole Deram album, 1970’s exemplary Story continue to roll in as fresh generations of pop connoisseurs discover its charms, and the group’s subsequent ill-starred excursions into the studio in the early ’70s (the long lost Recital album and the rarities companion volume For Where Have You Been: The Lost Tracks, released by Hanky Panky /Mapache in 2018) simply add further depth and kudos to their already Godlike status, their run of half a dozen 45s has been side-lined somewhat. Now for the first time ever the 12 sides released on Deram by the Mk I and Mk II line-ups of the group between 1967 and 1970 have been sourced from the master tapes, assembled in chronological order and presented in album fashion.

The teen girl falling in love with greasy biker melodrama that set The Shangri-Las on the scene was beaten to the core when English high society child Lynn Ripley -better known as Twinkle- took it to the next level on her own composition "Terry". Penned at the tender age of sixteen, Twinkle's lyrics were found so twisted and bad tasty that the song got the honour of being banned at the BBC thirteen years before the Sex Pistols ran the same luck with "God Save The Queen." A ban that, as you would have guessed, instead of hiding the song from the era's teenage record hunters made it even more coveted. Thus "Terry", Twinkle's first 45 issued on Decca in October 1964, became an instant top 5 hit in the UK and was released successfully worldwide as well as covered by many bands (like Claude François French version or Los Extraños cover sung in Spanish).

Following on from Spying Through A Keyhole, in early 1969 at his flat in Clareville Grove, London, David Bowie with John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson continued to demo ‘Space Oddity’ and other tracks.

This live demo tape session is set for release as a 7" vinyl singles box set of six home demos, four
of which are previously unreleased recordings, Clareville Grove Demos will be released on
17th May 2019.

As with the Spying Through A Keyhole vinyl singles box set, the design of each single label is
presented to reflect the way David sent many of his demos to publishers and record companies,
featuring his own handwritten song titles on EMIDISC acetate labels with cover and print photos by
David’s then manager Ken Pitt taken in the Clareville Grove flat.

The singles themselves are all mono and play at 45 r.p.m.

Due to the nature of some of the solo home demos where Bowie accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, the recording quality isn’t always of a usual studio fidelity. This is partly due to David’s enthusiastic strumming hitting the red on a couple of the tracks, along with the limitations of the original recording equipment and tape degradation. However, the historical importance of these songs and the fact that the selections are from an archive of tracks cleared for release by Bowie, overrides this shortcoming.

The most popular and productive line-up of the Athenians beat group came together in Edinburgh in late 1963 and comprised Rick Alcorn ( Bass), Ally Black ( Guitar), Keith Henderson ( Guitar), Arthur Mackey ( Drums) and Ian Orr (Vocals). After a deep delve into the catalogues of Sue, Chess, Atlantic, Motown etc. a pretty sassy outfit became the exponents of some very acceptable R&B/ Rock. Having now acquired a fan club, a manager and a large following, the band were playing seven nights a week, two of these as residents of the famous Gamp Club, allegedly their second home. Although only part-time, they were relishing their situation especially the attention coming from the student fraternity at Edinburgh University and soon they'd be performing with Manfred Mann, The Hollies, The Animals, The Pretty Things, Diana Dors (what?) and many, many more.

The University connection was to introduce them to their first taste of recording as a request was made to cut a single to promote the Charity Appeal for that year. Entering Craighall Studios in early Feb. 1964 tracks 'You Tell Me/ Little Queenie' are produced and released in all their glory (It has now been confirmed by rock historians/pundits that this record is the first 7" Single to be released by a Scottish beat group).

The Wah Wah edition compiles the bands' 45s plus previously unreleased recordings from surviving acetates - if you love bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, bluesmen like Slim Harpo or Lazy Lester and also the soulful sounds of acts like Ike & Tina Turner or Ben E. King this LP is for you!

In a strictly limited edition of only 500 copies, remastered by Roger Prades @ Prades Mastering and housed in new vintage styled artwork in a three backflaps sleeve. Get your piece of Scotland's beat story!
