The Story Of Moondog Green Starburst Vinyl Edition
LP | 1957 | EU | Reissue (4 Men With Beards)

Release:1957 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
Originally released on Prestige in 1957, this is the third LP from NYC street performer and avant garde/minimalist composer Moondog. Perhaps the least accessible of his early releases, this album is made up of percussive jams, usually on instruments of his own creation, street sounds, poetry, and Far East melodies, despite opening with a swinging number that is, oddly, the most bizarre thing on the album. Another classic from Moondog reissued with its original Andy Warhol artwork. Limited edition of 1,000 on purple and green starburst vinyl.

Johnny Jenkins' Ton-Ton Macoute! originally released in 1970, is a classic Southern cooked blues, rock, soul and country album. The recording started life as a Duane Allman solo record which was then taken over and completed by Jenkins and crafted into this release with help from future Allman Brothers members Berry Oakley, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks. Highlights include a cover of Dr. John's "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" which has been sampled many times, Bob Dylan's "Down Along The Cove", Muddy Waters "Rollin' Stone" and J.D. Loudermilk's "Bad News." Also included are the bonus tracks "I Don't Want No Woman" by Don Robey and Otis Rush's "My Love Will Never Die." On 180 gram vinyl in a gatefold sleeve.

Over 50 years since his discovery by ethnomusicologists Dr. Harry Oster and Richard Allen in the prison farm of Angola, Louisiana, what is it that makes the blues as sung and picked by Robert Pete Williams such a singular listening experience, unequaled elsewhere in that musical form? As Peter Guralnick, in his Feel Like Going Home book writes: “It’s difficult to approve the banalities of most blues singers after listening to Robert Pete Williams. More than anyone else he shatters the conventions of the form and refuses to rely upon any of the clichés, either of music or of lyric, which bluesman after bluesman will invoke. Instead he sings blues which reflect a unique and personal vision; he makes each song unmistakably his own.” Unfamiliar keys, cliché-free lyricism, spontaneity, an individualistic style in invoking his particular blues, all make Robert Pete Williams an idiosyncratic entry into the canon. It’s impossible to listen to blues artists before him and hear strains of his particular style. None have matched it since. Louisiana Blues contains 10 songs recorded in the month of July 1966 out in Berkeley, California for John Fahey’s Takoma imprint. Comes with a 8 page booklet. Limited edition of 600 on bottleneck brown vinyl.

180 gram gatefold LP. Originally released in 1966 on the Takoma label, Contemporary Guitar is a beautiful compilation of solo acoustic guitar instrumentals from folk and blues legends such as Bukka White, John Fahey, and Robbie Basho as well as lesser known-s like Max Ochs and Harry Taussig.

An essential compilation of American guitar soli.

Case History is the debut solo release from bluesy British singer-songwriter Kevin Coyne (originally released on John Peel's Dandelion label in 1972). Primarily just guitar and vocals, Case History is a powerful album from a very unique voice who was celebrated by folks as wide ranging as John Lydon, Sting, and the Mekons. Coyne, who passed away in 2004, spent much of the '60s working with the mentally disabled, and his songwriting is informed by a deep concern for the plight and mistreatment of those who have been tossed off by society. A bit of an outsider himself, he eschewed record industry pressure and maintained focus on his singular artistic vision. Another underappreciated classic.
