The musician and spiritual seeker Alice Coltrane was much more than just John Coltrane’s second wife. One of the few harpists to feature prominently in jazz, she was also a renowned pianist and composer and her interest in spiritual matters greatly helped steer her husband deeper into Krishna consciousness, which had significant bearing on his music, most notably evident on A Love Supreme. This mesmerising performance, held at Carnegie Hall four years after John’s untimely passing as part of a benefit event for Swami Satchidananda's Integral Yoga Institute, comprised a stunning and largely improvised rendition of Coltrane’s “Africa,” with Alice’s subtle piano and harp expressions excellently framed by the wailing saxes of Pharaoh Sanders and Archie Shepp, Cecil McBee and Jimmy Garrison trading non-standard bass lines, a dual drum onslaught from Clifford Jarvis and Ed Blackwell, along with members of the Institute on harmonium and tamboura.

Playing in Dixieland jazz bands during his teens and then passing through some Kansas City jazz acts, New York-born alto saxophonist Steve Lacy became associated with the avant-garde jazz movement from the mid-1950s, playing on free jazz pianist Cecil Taylor’s
influential debut LP and early work by the Canadian pianist Gil Evans, before serving a long tenure with the idiosyncratic improv pianist Theolonius Monk, whose work he would continue to reference throughout his career. Visiting Europe from the md-1960s, starting with a trip to Copenhagen with pianist Kenny Drew (who made the Danish city his home thereafter), Lacy later travelled to Italy to form a quartet with Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava (who had earlier played in Argentinian sax player, Gato Barbieri’s group), plus South African exiles and former Blue Notes members Johnny Dyani on double bass and Louis Moholo on drums. Lacy subsequently moved to Paris, which became his permanent base from 1970, leading a sextet there whilst also exploring the limits of the alto saxophone as a solo instrument. The disparate and often discordant album Threads was recorded in Rome at Mama Dog studio in 1977 for filmmaker-turned-record producer Aldo Sinesio’s Horo Records label; comprised of six of Lacy’s own compositions, the album saw Lacy supported by Alvin Curran on piano and Frederic Rzewski on flugelhorn, synthesizer and percussion, the pair both longstanding members of the experimental group, Musica Elettronica Viva.

Dallas-born Roger Kynard Erickson, better known as Roky Erickson, is a legend of psychedelic music and culture. Playing piano at five years old and guitar at ten, he dropped out of high school in Austin shortly before graduating, since the school dress code demanded
short hair. In 1965, his group, The Spades, made an impact with “We Sell Soul” and the following year, The 13 th Floor Elevators burst onto the scene with debut album The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13 th Floor Elevators, but the band’s non-conformist attitude and
open endorsement of drugs such as marijuana and LSD put them in repeated conflict with the authorities. Then, in 1968, during a performance at the San Antonio edition of the World’s Fair, known as HemisFare, Erickson began speaking incomprehensible nonsense on stage, leading to a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and confinement in a Houston psychiatric hospital, where he was forcibly given electroshock therapy. The following year, after being busted with a single joint, Erickson pleaded not guilty by means of insanity, leading to a 3-year stay in Rusk State Hospital, with further electroshock and Thorazine treatments. Following his release Erickson formed a group initially called Bleib Alien, which evidenced a more hard-rock orientation, later renamed The Aliens, though Erickson was also working with Austin’s The Explosives in the same era. Aliens material produced by Stu Cook of Creedence Clearwater Rival was issued by CBS and an independent, 415 Records. Then, in the early 1980s, Erickson became fixated with junk mail and unsolicited letters, writing to lawyers and celebrity figures on a regular basis; in 1985, solo mini-LP Clear Night For Love was produced at Music Tracks in Austin by bassist/guitarist Speedy Sparks, with former Joe “King” Carrasco and Delbert McClinton drummer, Ernie Durawa, plus Supernatural Family Band alumnus John Reed on guitar. Released by France’s New Rose label in small numbers, the release found Erickson back in semi-psychedelic/country rock mode on opening track “You Don’t Love Me Yet,” the plaintive “Starry Eyes” and the anthem-like title track, while “The Haunt” is more in swamp/horror rock vein and “Don’t Slander Me” has heavy blues leanings.

Japanese experimental group Les Rallizes Denudes are the ultimate rock ‘n’ roll enigma. Sometimes referred to as Hadaka no Rallizes or even as Hadaka no Rarizu, each appellation a variant of the name “Fucked Up and Naked” which equates to being high on hard drugs, they are seen as noise-rock pioneers, yet sifting fact from fiction isn’t easy with their oddball tale. Emerging from the radical hippie communes of Kyoto during the late 1960s, the band was formed in November 1967 by university student Takashi Mizutani, taking the overamplified, distorted guitar of the Velvet Underground as a starting point. Early demo recordings apparently suffered from poor sound quality, leading the perfectionist Mizutani to retreat from the studio environment, meaning that most of the group’s output has appeared as live bootlegs, with the occasional studio demo surfacing as well. Performances were initially staged as part of avant-garde theatre, though the band’s propensity for super- loud noise soon put paid to such collaboration; the ever-changing membership saw Mizutani the only permanent force, despite his embroilment in the 1970 Red Army hijacking of a civilian Japan Airlines flight, enacted partly through bass player, Moriaki Wakabayashi, who defected to North Korea in its aftermath. Though perhaps not quite as notorious, fellow improvisational group, Taj Mahal Travellers, has a backstory of random international travels that is almost as intriguing as that of Les Rallizes; formed in 1969 by six experimental musicians and an electronic engineer, they embarked on a series of improvisational gigs across Japan, notably including an all-day marathon held at a Kanagawa beach, and made their way to Europe in 1971, where they crossed paths with Don Cherry and other likeminded practitioners. They later drove from Holland to the Pakistan border, acquiring santoors in Iran on the way to help broaden their already unpredictable repertoire. The Oz Days Live release is culled from the Oz Last Days festival held in the autumn of 1973, to benefit Tokyo’s Oz Rock Café, which had been closed following repeated drug busts. Here the Taj Mahal Travellers are suitably cosmic, their echoing jams featuring looped vocal chants, disjointed string instruments and sparse, off-kilter percussion; in contrast, the contributions from Les Rallizes are more standard examples of instrumental psychedelic rock, which veers more towards the acid rock end of the spectrum as the performance progresses.

Pianist and composer Mary Lou Williams played with nearly every major jazz performer during her long, illustrious and varied career, in addition to recording many solo works. Born Mary Winn in Atlanta in 1910 and raised in a ‘shotgun shack,’ where local musicians gathered to jam, she played by ear from a tender age and learned the boogie-woogie style upon moving to Pittsburgh with her older sister Mamie. While still in high school, Williams toured with the Theatre Owners’ Booking Association, bringing her into the orbit of Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong and blues singer, Irene Scruggs, among others; later, based in Kansas City during the 1930s, she began composing and recording solo work. After a stint at the Cotton Club, she formed a combo in Pittsburgh that featured Art Blakey, but was soon recruited by Duke Ellington and once back in New York, began jamming with Thelonius Monk and Charlie Christian at bop hotbed, Minton’s Playhouse. Art Tatum, Count Basie…you name it, she played with them! Black Christ of the Andes is easily one of the most individual albums created by Williams, or anyone else in jazz, for that matter; recorded in New York in late 1963 and first issued on Williams’ own Mary Records, the album has jazz explorations of divine concepts, delivered with suitably complex arrangements; “Anima Christi” and “Praise The Lord” both feature soaring assembly by Melba Liston, “The Devil” and the title track have elaborate choral voices from the Howard Roberts Singers, and instrumentals such as “Miss D D” and “A Fungus Amungus” use her expert piano skills to shock, titillate and provide light relief.

The Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Joyce Silveira Moreno was born and raised in the middle of Copacabana, a short beach stroll from the epicentre of the bossa nova universe. Her father was a Dane that had settled in Brazil, but she was raised by her other and step-father in a typical Portuguese-Brazilian household. Since her older brother was friendly with leading lights of the bossa nova movement such as Roberto Menescal and Eumir Deodato, she was steeped in the form at an early age and witnessed its key evolution first-hand. At the age of 16 in 1964, she was taken to the studio by Menescal to contribute to the coveted debut album by the mythical group Sambacana, assembled to record the work of composer Pacífico Mascarenhas when the meagre budget would not allow the vocalists he preferred. Knowing that a full-time career in music was certainly not guaranteed, she began studying journalism in 1967, shortly before her controversial song “Me Disseram” reached the finals of Rio’s second International Song Competition. The following year, her self-titled debut album was released by Philips, produced by Armando Pittigliani, with orchestration by Dorival Caymmi and arrangements by Gaya; along with her own compositions, the album also featured songs by her rising-star friends, including Caetano Veloso and Marcos Valle.

As noted for our Il Paradiso dell’Uomo soundtrack release, Italian film composer Piero Umiliani was responsible for over 200 original motion picture soundtracks during his long and varied career, creating 35 television theme songs and 40 music library albums. Born in Florence in 1926, he began to receive international recognition in 1958 for his work on the soundtrack of the comedic crime film I Soliti Ignoti (also known as Persons Unknown, Le Pigeon or Big Deal on Madonna Street, depending on the territory), which featured the contribution of jazz trumpeter and actor Chet Baker, an alumnus of Stan Getz, Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan’s bands that enjoyed a successful solo career, both in the US and in Europe, despite longstanding issues with heroin addiction. In 1961, Umiliani and Baker joined forces again for the soundtrack of the film Smog, a complicated courtroom drama about an Italian lawyer’s travels to Los Angeles, which resulted in all manner of unexpected escapades. Baker features prominently on the moody theme song, the unexpected swing of “Thinkin’ Blues,” the terse melody of the aptly-titled “Tension,” the lingering moodiness of “Alone In A Crowd” and the intense edginess of “Twilight At Los Angeles”; Helen Merrill contributes an alternate reading of the theme song in vocal form and a sultry number called “Dawn.” The remainder is pure Umiliani, mostly in the form of heavily-orchestrated big-band jazz, fitting music for a silver-screen venture.

The inventive and expressive pianist Bill Evans made significant and lasting impact in the jazz realm during a career that stretched from the late 1950s to the late 1970s. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1929, his father’s alcoholism caused a disrupted childhood, though his musical talent was spotted early, leading to a scholarship at the Southeastern Louisiana University and the Mannes School of Music, where he majored in composition. Moving to New York in the mid-50s to work with George Russell, Evans’ breakthrough came via his membership of Miles Davis’ sextet, where his intense and melodic playing helped make Kind of Blue an outstanding landmark, during a time when he was also contributing to Chet Baker’s self-titled LP. Evans formed a popular trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, which was cut short after LaFaro tragically died in a car crash, leading to the creation of a new trio with Chuck Israels. Then, following collaborative albums with Cannonball Adderley, Eric Dolphy, Shelly Mann, Jim Hall and others, Evans recorded the concept album Conversations With Myself for Verve Records. Produced in a permissive atmosphere with Creed Taylor and engineer Ray Hall in February 1963 and subtitled A Searching Look into the Genius of Bill Evans, the album features a multi-tracked Evans playing only with himself on piano, with each track featuring an improvised second and third piano line, overdubbed atop what Evans laid down first. Reconstructed renditions of Theolonius Monk’s “‘Round About Midnight” and “Blue Monk” give way to “Theme From Spartacus” and Evans’ own “NYC’s No Lark”; this edition features two bonus tracks, the first a re-organized take of Monk’s “Bemsha Swing,” the second a rendition of the Broadway show tune, “A Sleepin’ Bee.”

One of the strangest and most enigmatic groups in the history of rock ‘n’ roll, Les Rallizes Denudes, also known as Hadaka no Rallizes or Hadaka no Rarizu , were a Japanese experimental rock band that is often cited as a pioneering force of the noise rock movement.
The story of the band is as strange and difficult as the music they made and although much of the tale is shrouded in mystery, everything apparently begins around Kyoto’s radical anti-
establishment communes of the late 1960s, where androgynous frontman Takashi Mizutani formed the group in November 1967 while attending Kyoto University. Hard facts are in thin supply and the band’s name employs complex punning that essentially equates to Fucked Up and Naked in Japanese, a slang reference to being high on drugs. Inspired by the Velvet Underground and other groups employing prominent, overamplified guitar, the band’s music was typically based on repetitive rhythmic patterns bolstered by Mizutani’s heavily distorted lead guitar, though the poor sound quality of early demos apparently turned Mizutani away from studio recordings, rendering much of their output in the form of live bootlegs, supplanted by the occasional leaked studio demo. Early performances were given as accompaniment to avant-garde theatre groups, though the group was soon deemed too loud to be a mere accompaniment, and membership fluctuated frequently, with Mizutani being the only constant, though he retreated from public view following the 1970 Red Army hijacking of Japan Airlines flight 351, with the assistance of original Rallizes bass player, Moriaki Wakabayashi, who subsequently fled to North Korea; the band continued to sporadically record and perform under various guises until 1997. The two versions of “There’s No Heaven Like Hell” presented here were recorded on 1 April 1975 at Rallizes House in Fussa, a small town to the west of Tokyo, joining Mizutani with keyboardist/guitarist Taisuke Morishita’s experimental group Be, originally known as Yellow. The first version takes the form of an epic slow drone, featuring Mizutani on acid guitar, backed only by Morishita’s pulsating synthesizer lines; the second version is in full marathon mode, an hour-long dirge that sees
the spacey duo joined by drummer Shunichiro Shoda and a plodding bassist in the latter portion.

The finger-picking guitarist and blues enthusiast John Fahey enjoyed a long, influential and distinguished career. Born in Washington DC in 1939 and raised in Takoma Park, Maryland, he lauched his own Takoma label to issue self-produced work in the late 1950s and then delivered his master's theses on the blues of Charlie Patton at UCLA. Then, while based in the radical town of Berkeley, California in the San Francisco Bay area, began issuing filed recordings of forgotten blues legends such as Bukka White. With his own work, Fahey began borrowing from eastern elements such as Indonesian gamelan and Tibetan vocal chanting, reflecting his interest in esoteric eastern religion, as well as birdsong, animal calls and other naturalistic elements. This beautiful 1973 performance, delivered in the sleepy town of Sausalito, California, comprises most of Fahey’s Fare Forward Voyagers LP, as well as earlier material, including “Dance of the Inhabitants of the Palace of King Philip XIV of Spain,” from his 1964 release, Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes.

Adventurous keyboardist and arranger Dick Hyman worked in radio, film and television before making a name for himself as a jazz pianist in the mid-1950s with a hugely popular harpsichord rendition of “Mack The Knife.” An early experimenter with electronic instruments, including the Moog, his 1963 rarity Moon Gas, produced by Creed Taylor and recorded with Sinatra sidekick and Broadway musical mainstay Mary Mayo, was conceived as “a glimpse of the possible sounds of the 22nd Century.” Blasting lounge music and love ballads into the nether regions of outer space, Moon Gas pitted Hyman’s organ, mini-organ and piano riffs against Mayo’s ethereal voice-—sometimes singing wordlessly, other times with actual lyrics—atop a tight studio ensemble, the sounds made more otherworldly through the use of an ondioline, a martinot, oscillators and Vinnie Bell’s customised guitar, which allowed for individualised sound effects. Although improvised opener “Moon Gas” sounds pleasantly jazzy, “Maid of the Moon” and “Space Reflex” reach the cosmos and there’s a one-off rendition of Joao Gilberto’s “Desafinado” too, delivered with skill in Portuguese.

In the summer of 1978, an ambitious twelve-day experimental jazz project was undertaken at the ancient amphitheatre, Tasso della Quercia, on the slopes of Rome’s Gianicolo hill. The idea was to assemble the leading players from Italy’s avante-garde jazz scene, revolving around members of Grande Elenco Musicisti (or GEM), such as saxophonists Tommaso Vittorini, Eugenio Colombo and Maurizio Giammarco, trumpeter Alberto Corvini and trombonist/composer Danilo Terenzi, together with visiting American players such as saxophonists Steve Lacy, Steve Potts and Evan Parker, trombonist Roswell Rudd, pianist Frederick Rzewski and drummer Noel McGhee, among others. Different group configurations were enacted each day and the final gala concert formed the basis of this super rare and highly playful double album, which captures the delightfully messy proceedings. In keeping with the openness of the Roman jazz scene of the day, the project sought to push the boundaries, aiming to break big-band traditions whilst still emphasizing the collective nature of the experience. Enrico Rava’s opening “Tromblues” emphasizes the disparate approaches of these trans-Atlantic teams and Terenzi’s “Dialogando” uses dual trombones to heighten musical discord; in mutated big-band mode, Giammarco’s thrillingly complex “Vortex Waltz” and Vittorini’s “La Legge E Uguale Per Tutti” both speak to the limitless potential that the project was aiming for.

One of the most mythical experimental groups of all time, Musica Elettronica Viva was formed in 1966 by a group of American composers in Rome, its nucleus comprised of pianist Frederic Rzewski, sound improviser Alvin Curran and the improvisatory keyboardist Richard Teitelbaum. Taking cues from John Cage and David Tudor, MEV employed open, limitless structures, using found instruments, toys, a homemade synthesizer and the first Moog to reach mainland Europe. Improv and critical listening practices aimed to liberate listeners from the constraints of bourgeois capitalism and as their sound evolved, forms of Jewish mysticism and surrealist automaticism pointed to transcendent potential. An abortive US tour in 1970 split MEV into three units, but the “Kabbalistic Dixieland” band later reformed with Rzewski, Curran and Teitelbaum joined by saxophonist Steve Lacy, trombonist Garrett List and keyboardist Karl Berger. The resultant double album United Patchwork, recorded in November 1977 at Mama Dog for Horo Records, captures MEV in all of their discordant, improvisatory glory, from Teitelbaum’s side-long opener, “Via Della Luce,” to the honking noise of Lacy’s “Fox,” the excessive keyboard meanderings of Curran’s “Psalm,” Berger’s vibraphone folly, “Cross Over One” and Rzewski’s ponderous “What Is Freedom.”

Obscure Minnesota-based power trio Highway has a long and convoluted history. In 1965, guitarist/vocalist Steve Murphy joined The Epicureans, a band formed from the ashes of The Pacers and The Corsairs, both previously active in the town of Fairmont, located southeast of the state capital, Minneapolis. The group issued a couple of singles along the way (both on small independents, which unfortunately failed to generate much interest), and ultimately morphed into Highway in 1972, then with Murphy and fellow Epicureans Tim Messerli on keyboards and vocals, Tom Olson on drums and John Goossen on bass. After opening for REO Speedwagon in Wisconsin, Olson was replaced by Dan Cammarata and Goossen by Eric Bannister. The resultant group’s self-titled debut album was recorded at Westminster Studio, near Fort Dodge in neighbouring Iowa, during a time when Highway was based in the tiny town of Ceylon, Minnesota; privately pressed in only 500 copies, it has since become a highly sought-after item for its unusual blend of melodic hard-rock lead guitar, psychedelic garage rock and wistful, country-tinged blues rock. Although some fans and critics have compared the group to Thin Lizzy and Wishbone Ash, primarily because of the melodic and distortion-free lead guitar licks, the band has a sound all their own, especially since all three members provide vocals, as well as fierce instrumental licks, with furious drum rolls from Cammarata and Murphy and Bannister sometimes playing the same notes in unison. Highway’s membership did not remain static for long and the group has since undergone further changes to yield the enduring Murphy Brothers band, yet their sole LP remains the most prized testament of their long, shifting tenure.

Tenor saxophonist Eddie Harris is best-known for his composition “Freedom Jazz Dance,” which Miles Davis brought to prominence in 1966, and for being a pioneer of the electric saxophone, yet his career is long, distinguished and varied. Born in Chicago in 1934 to a Cuban father and a mother from New Orleans, Harris studied in his youth under the influential music teacher/violinist Walter Dyett at DuSable High School and then at Roosevelt University, where he played piano and vibraphone, as well as tenor sax, appearing with tenor sax giant Gene Ammons before graduation. Following a stint in Europe in the US Army, where he played in the 7 th Army Band, Harris worked in New York for a time and then signed to Vee Jay upon returning to Chicago in 1961; debut album, Exodus Into Jazz, was named for his jazz adaptation of the theme from the movie Exodus, a chart-topping smash which became the first jazz song to win a gold disc. There were further jazz/film soundtrack explorations for Vee Jay and some concept albums too, with Bossa Nova being the most noteworthy of the bunch. The Brazilian form had been gaining favour in the US thanks to “Girl From Ipanema,” yet Harris’ LP was not a tokenistic stab at faddism; instead, Harris uses the form as a launchpad for his own sterling solos, heard most enticingly on “Cev Y Mar” and on the dreamy opener “Mima,” inspired by his young daughter, Lolita Marie. The stellar backing is part of the picture too, the hand-picked musicians led by esteemed pianist Lalo Schriffin (then still making a name for himself), with Coltrane/Monk bassist Art Davis, Dizzy Gillespie drummer Chuck Lampkin and veteran guitarist Jimmy Raney allowing Harris all the space he needs, yet never playing mere filler behind him.

Saxophonist Albert Ayler’s work straddled various streams of the jazz idiom. Nearly 50 years after his tragically early death (his drowning in the East River most likely the result of suicide), critics, fans and detractors are still arguing over whether Ayler can be considered a true “free jazz” player or whether his unorthodox style transcended or complimented the moniker. In any case, he was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1936, the son a semi-professional saxophonist who tutored him early on alto sax and exposed him to swing and be-bop, along with the church music that was a big part of his upbringing. After studying at the Cleveland Academy of Music with jazz saxophonist Benny Miller, Ayler became known as “Little Bird” after Charlie Parker, for his mastery of be-bop. As a teenager, he was already playing tenor saxophone in Little Walter’s blues band during school holidays, and when he joined the US Army in 1958, Ayler began playing with fellow GIs such as tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and the experimental composer, poet and keyboardist Harold Budd; he permanently switched from alto to tenor in this phase. Upon leaving the Army, Ayler sought work in Los Angeles and Cleveland, but found resistance from the purists for his continual pushing of boundaries. Relocating to Sweden in 1962 was the bridge to a successful recording and performing career as he led various Swedish and Danish groups on radio sessions, playing in an informal and uncredited capacity in Cecil Taylor’s band in late 1962. The Albert Ayler Trio then consisted of Ayler, bassist Torbjörn Hultcrantz and drummer Sune Spångberg; four dissonant songs from their live performance on 24 October 1962 would be issued on the Bird Notes label in Sweden as Something Different!!!!!! and reissued overseas as the first edition of The First Recording; it included a barely-recognisable rendition of showtune “I’ll Remember April,” an off-kilter take of Sonny Rollins’ “The Stopper” retitled “Rollins’ Tune,” and a wobbly cut of Miles Davis’ “Tune Up,” along with the original “Free.” The exceedingly rare Volume 2 was also issued on Bird Notes – at least in test pressings with photos of Ayler glued to the cover – comprised of 3 extended meditations of discord, namely blown mutations of showtunes “Softly As In A Morning Sunrise” and “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” along with a growling cut of Count Basie’s “Good Bait.”

Pharoah Sanders: Live at the Antibes Jazz Festival in Juan-les-Pins July 21, 1968 Experimental jazz titan Pharoah Sanders made a lasting impact with his unorthodox approach to tenor saxophone. Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1940, he was given the nickname Pharoah by grandmother, in reference to the potential regal lineage of his African heritage. Playing clarinet at church services during his youth, he began playing tenor sax at high school. In 1959 he moved to Oakland, California, where he played with rhythm and blues bands and befriended John Coltrane. Moving to New York in 1961, he drifted into Sun Ra’s Arkestra after experiencing a difficult period of homelessness. His status began to rise upon joining Coltrane’s band in 1965, where his discordant solos formed a strong contrast to Trane’s more melodious sound, though each player had a strong impact on the other’s subsequent work. Following Coltrane’s untimely death in 1967, Sanders formed a quartet of his own with former Jazz Messengers pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Norman ‘Sirone’ Jones of the Untraditional Jazz Improvisational Team, and drummer Majeed Shabazz. For this blistering performance, given at the Antibes Jazz Festival of 1968 and broadcast on French radio station WDR3, the quartet moves through various Sanders free-jazz workouts, taking in “Venus” from the Tauhid album and “The Creator Has A Master Plan” from Karma along the way, with the rhythm section holding down the fort as Sanders blows himself into the stratosphere.

Italian film composer Piero Umiliani enjoyed a long and illustrious career, creating nearly 200 film soundtracks, along with 40 music library LPs and some 35 television themes. Born in Florence in 1926, he was first recognised internationally for his work on the soundtrack of 1958 crime caper I Soliti Ignoti (AKA Big Deal on Madonna Street, Persons Unknown or Le Pigeon), which featured noted jazz trumpeter, Chet Baker—the first time, in fact, that jazz music had been used for an Italian comedy feature. Umiliani teamed with Baker again in 1961, along with Croatian-American jazz singer Helen Merrill, for the soundtrack of Smog, a drama about an Italian lawyer’s unintended escapades in Los Angeles, and his work was later featured on American and British television shows, including The Muppets, the Benny Hill Show and the Red Skelton Show. Il Paradiso dell'Uomo (AKA Man’s Paradise), subtitled ‘Forbidden Japan,’ was a little-known documentary released in 1963 focussing on the roles assigned to women in the country, from the traditional pearl-fishing divers of the coast and urban factory workers to traditional dancers and the ambiguous world of geisha and striptease. This impossibly-rare soundtrack mixes eastern and western musical elements, veering from classical tropes to swing jazz, with Chinese singer Mei Lang Chang on a couple of tracks and singer/composer/musicologist Francesco Potenza leading the chorus on another.
