Genre:Rock / Indie
Follow The Sun compiles twenty cuts dug from dusty bins by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring) and Keith Abrahamsson (Founder / Head of A&R at Anthology Recordings) surveying the sought after sound of Australia’s lesser — and greater — known moments of 70’s rock, folk, and their in-between offspring. Follow The Sun filters the sublime and sometimes subversive psychedelic airwaves transmitted around the world from America’s terrestrial platforms during the golden age of gentle, exploratory FM through a distinctly Australian lens.

As part Anthology Recordings’ Surf Archive series, we celebrate the soundtracks to Andrew Kidman’s classic 1996 film Litmus alongside his 2006 follow up Glass Love.By the early ‘90s, surfing was on an upswing in popularity as professional surfers became marketable athletes. The three-fin, high performance, “thruster” shortboard was the tool of choice, lending to a fast-paced slashing style and ultimately a more aggressive “surf and destroy” movement in board culture.Litmus, Andrew Kidman’s first avant-garde surf film, served as a soulful reaction to the pop-punk progression that dominated the “alternative” mainstream. With the film’s visceral and cerebral moodiness, folksy soundtrack, and meditative spirit, critics swooned over surf misfits like Wayne Lynch, Derek Hynd, Tom Curren, and Joel Fitzgerald. Despite the acclaim, the film was not much of a commercial success at the time. The aura of Litmus’ soundtrack, however, has found its cultish corner in the surf world.Prior to filming Litmus, Kidman’s band, The Val Dusty Experiment, recorded a total of thirty-five songs in one day. The outcome of the “one-and-done” sessions was a lo-fi, rustic, experimental rock ‘n’ roll sound, adding a rough-around-the-edges ambiance to the surf scenes that span Ireland, Australia, California, and South Africa. Additional contributions from Yothu Yindi and The Screaming Orphans diversify the score. Litmus was a defining moment in surf filmmaking — it sparked an open-minded retro-progressive movement as surfers formed a higher consciousness about the types of boards they were riding and why.Kidman released his second film, Glass Love, ten years later. As with Litmus, the music came first; Kidman felt his songwriting was ready to take on a new life. Thanks in part to Litmus, experimentation in board design progressed as surfers became more contemplative, questioning, ‘is surfing art or sport?’ Glass Love and its soundtrack highlights this mindset and time period, creating an extra dimension to surfing that is still prevalent today.

As part of our ongoing Anthology Surf Archive series, Anthology Recordings is recognizing the classic 1981 underground film, Bali High, directed by filmmaker Stephen Spaulding. Bali was still an untapped resource of waves in 1977 and Spaulding was struck by its uncrowded tubes, towering volcanoes and rich Hindu culture. He would spend the next three years chasing waves from Indonesia to Kauai, filming now legendary surfers Rick Rasmussen, Peter McCabe, Tommy Carroll, and Larry Blair. The end result was Bali High, a preservation of this era of travel and adventure. Most surf film soundtracks were bootlegged straight from the director’s record collection without much thought given to licensing rights or fees. Spaulding’s original soundtrack featured favorites from The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, and Santana, but as the subculture grew commercial traction Spaulding had to rethink how to legally sell the film without paying for song rights. For the 1984 re-release Spaulding sought out the help of Kauai based musician and producer MICHAEL SENA to compose an original score that could match the action and vibe of his previous soundtrack. Sena wrote, produced, and recorded the entire album himself in just three months. The resulting 26 tracks lend the film its signature flavor and cover an impressive variation of genres, featuring moments of folk, dubby rock, synthesized disco, tropicalia, jazz fusion, and hyper-tempo power rock.

The 1977 psychedelic rarity, Michael Angelo (aka The Guinn Album), by Kansas City, MO-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Michael Angelo Nigro, is a hook-filled, staggering, inner space hi-fi snapshot of dreamy folk-rock, Anglophile-pop and light psychedelia. Filled with poetic and imaginative lyrical imagery and a Beatle-esque vocal presence that etches lovely figures, Angelo taps into the forever, ruminating on timeless life concerns in an oblique and direct manner. This is a cohesive album-length statement that stands as a heavy-hitter in the pantheon of “out-of-time” treasures, with strummy, jangly folk-rock guitar, incendiary lead lines, big, resonant piano chords and plaintive tinkling, aided by keyboard coloring. Coming to form in local professional studios where he worked as a mid-to-late ‘70s session man, Angelo plays all instruments on the album (spare drums, handled by Frank Gautieri). Original copies have long traded for close to four figures. The more affordable versions previously available have been shoddy bootlegs with poor sound. While the original master tapes vanished decades ago, this edition has been treated to a new re-master from a sealed original mint copy—and with Michael’s full involvement and blessing—rendering it as near the sound of the original LP as possible. Without the need to shell out top-dollar—and, with full, sterling sound—we can now all drift within a sea of dreams with Michael Angelo.

Rock and pop music are, by all accounts, as unfair as life itself. Imagine spending the prime years of one’s life, slowly honing one’s skills as a guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and fledgling producer/engineer, only to have the developed fruits of your labor passed over by industry, radio, even those who you may have connected with earlier. Such was the fate of Music And Dreams, a wonderful, privately-issued album released by Robert Lester Folsom in 1976 that’s very special to us here at Anthology Recordings.

Green And Yellow is the collected recordings of legendary lost 1970s Deep South freaksters, The Stroke Band. Seen and heard, until now, by only a few South Georgia pot heads, rednecks, sheriffs, strippers, and intoxicated U.S. Marines. Fronted by Bruce Joyner-a swamp rat synthesis of Buddy Holly, Bryan Ferry and Jerry Lee Lewis-The Stroke Band were an art-punk aberration to anything else happening in South Georgia in 1978-79. This Anthology Recordings re-release of the Green And Yellow album is the first in any form since the private press LP came out in 1978. Includesrare photos and a comprehensive oral history from the participants, including singer and band leader Bruce Joyner, who signed to Sire Records with The Unknowns in 1981 and has released several acclaimed solo albums since 1983; Don Fleming, guitarist for the Stroke Band, who went on to front his own bands Velvet Monkeys and Gumball, and produced albums for Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub, Hole, Screaming Trees, Andrew W.K.; Mark Neill, guitarist for The Stroke Band and The Unknowns, who is a renowned recording producer and engineer.
