Allez! As the curtains come down on another crazy summer of love, Apollonia drop their latest release courtesy of iO Mulen - the Ukranian rude boy who appeared on the label at the beginning of the year with ‘Unknown To The Unknown’. He’s backwith a hefty six-track package which is sure to please his fans, and win him a whole new army of supporters. We get straight to business with the first track, ‘rdm37’, one of those trusty Apollonia bouncing bombs. Skittish beats work off a sublimegroove, while iO keeps the background full of interesting sounds; boings, cheeps and all manner of whimsical effects, introducing more and more as the track progresses. By the midpoint you’re so gripped by the track that your whole body is moving uncontrollably, super glued to the rhythm.Next up, it’s ‘xdt54’ coming through with a deep, persuasive bassline that jigs around in the low end luring you into its web. Simple, polished percussive elements keep things moving at a pace while subtle keys and barely-there vocals add further layers to this catchy little number. The third track in on this lengthy EP is ‘mpc13’, a walk on the sensual side. Vocal snippets are interspersed among sultry pads, skipping four to the floor beats and a sleazy b-line to create a delectable slice of dance floor naughtiness. This one flirts with you as it writhes around, taking you ever deeper… Four tracks in we have ‘zgb41’, another alluring cut that has all the hallmarks of a deep house classic. Those shimmering pads, a bassline that feels like it was born in nineties Chicago, diamond-cut beats and a general feeling of what we would call ‘true house music’. There’s soul, there’s funk and there’s realness, what more can you ask for? ‘ypt58’ keeps us locked in to that hypnotic groove with an insistent b-line holding things down - together with the infectious rhythm cultivated by the drum arrangement, it’s a killer combo. Put those together with the smooth atmospherics plus synth lines staggering in and out of the background and you’ve got yourself a roller. Last but definitely not least is ‘zxy22’, a wistful slice of technoid funk which has a delicate melody at its foundation. As it develops we get sucked in to layer upon layer of beauty, from the analogue low end to the electric guitar riff – each layer complementing the other and creating a symphony of sounds that acts as a perfect way to close out the EP and will no doubt end plenty of DJ sets, when it’s released. So Monsieur iO (mulen) returns to Apollonia with an instant classic, make sure you snap it up right away. Magnifique!

One of the core members of the Apollonia family is the mastermind behind the label’s latest release. Shonky steps up with his first solo EP since ‘Plombiére’ which dropped in July 2016. Full of funky flavours and that distinct ‘Shonky style’, the new EP consists of four brand new tracks produced exclusively for Apollonia. Each track emanates its own unique vibe, while reppin’ Shonk’s irresistible groove. On side A we have ‘Tyrolien’, a jaunty number with bright tones and a tight, rolling groove. Shonky injects it with a series of unusual FX and what sounds like an wizened old creature, speaking about ‘the foulest stench in the air’. It’s a superb combination and sets the EP off to a great start.Next up is ‘Beat Street’ which has a heavier set of beats, which stomp down as a marauding b-line gets to work. Tiny fizzes and cheeps in the background add depth, sounding like robotic birds at play in the wild. The track is minimal in its make up, but deep and engrossing, classic Shonky material.Flip the vinyl over and we have ‘Torro Rosso’, a bold, stomping workout with fresh percussion and a jovial analogue riff. As the bubbly low end percolates way down below, the beats pump the track along and an extra layer of analogue funk enters the fray midway through. The final track is titled ‘Serpent à Sonnette’ and swithes the vibe. It’s loose, meandering and twisted, with a hypnotic bassline and super sharp percussion. This one is going to get the dance floor locked into a groove, as it progresses a sweet, chirpy melody brightens the mood. Feel the glow!Once again Shonky demonstrates his ability to produce groovy dance floor cuts that have their own unique fingerprint; danceable, unusual and utterly captivating.

This is the fourth EP the Paris legends Dan Ghenacia and Chris Carrier have made together over the last year, and it’s just as fresh as their previous efforts with plenty of bounce, depth and funk. First up on the A-side is ‘The Blue Grass’, a deeply sensual cut with a potent low end. Therein lies the groove, which is utterly captivating – made to get you writhing with glee, this one is aimed straight at the hips. Alongside that sleazy bassline we have jazzy notes, swinging percussion and otherworldly bleeps and chirps. All of which makes it a great intro to this sterling EP. On the flip side, we have ‘Blue Stick’, another ridiculously groovy riddim with warped voices floating above a set of crispy beats and a raw undercurrent of emotion. Minimal in composition, and the effect is deadly. Lastly, to close out the three-tracker, it’s ‘Kind Of Blues’ (can you spot the theme here?!). When it starts off, this one is a stomper with a moody expression. The beats are hefty, the bass morose and the analogue effects strangely cosmic. More twisted vocals are filtered in the background, giving this one its weird hook. The vocal reveals itself in the breakdown midway through before the track bounds on to its finale. Dan Ghenacia and Chris Carrier deliver three firebombs, perfect dance floor material with tight grooves and killer production. Would you expect anything less?!

Remixes by Edward / Martinez Brothers / Terrence: Terry RemixesLast year Apollonia dropped their debut album ‘Tour à Tour', a collection of tracks that represented their all night long b2b2b sessions. Now the boys proudly present the remixes! Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky have carefully curated a selection of remixers from their closely-knit group of talented friends within the underground scene to create an album of exquisite reinterpretations. Each of the artists who've contributed to the album of reworks has a personal connection to the crew; members of the Lola ED family, friends from foreign lands, French comrades… they're all here and they've all put their own fresh twist on Apollonia's original works. An old hand brings a totally invigorating energy to the heartfelt ‘June' as Charles Webster injects his experience into transforming the track into a light, leftfield-leaning soundscape. His rework takes us into dreamland, with smooth washes of synth and tinkling percussion giving it a slight tribal feel. ‘Mouche Tsé Tsé' gets not one but two remixes; Hold Youth (Le Loup and Seuil) give it a sleazy, electro lick with a winding bassline and naïve, 8-bit esque FX for those hazy after-hours gatherings. Meanwhile, Thomas Melchior takes thing a little left of centre with his abstract rework full of odd sounds and clattering drums. Two very different versions, but both equally high-quality. Fellow Parisian Terence:Terry: aims straight for the dance floor with his mesmerising mix of ‘Sona'. A groove-led production, it relies on a hefty bassline together with crisp percussion and a heady set of pads that will transport you to a higher plain. New York legend Jovonn, a previous contributor to the label and an inspiration to Apollonia, also lends his talents to reconfiguring ‘Sona'. His version works around that gritty, jazz-infused sound.

For the latest instalment in the Apollonia story we look to Argentina and the talented producer Federico Molinari. Having been based in Germany for the last couple of decades, Federico has refined his sound, developing a strong signature through his DJ sets and his studio productions, most of which he has released via his label OSLO. Federico’s ability to craft effortless grooves and timeless rhythms is evident here on this killer new three-tracker.Side A is the eight-minute long roller ‘Congo Toys’. The focus here is on a crisp 4x4 beat, which keeps things simple – under this lies a sturdy bassline. All the while, the low end is accompanied by a series of bleeps, which could almost be the chatter between two archaic computers, modulated and weaving in and out of the beats and bass.On the flip, we have two more dance floor-ready joints. Like ‘ Congo Toys, ‘Tres Cuartos’ is focused around a simple foundation, with layers of unusual effects – an overriding sense of playfulness comes through in Molinari’s production, perfect for the boogie down crew. Last up, ‘Joyfex’ takes us further into leftfield, hypnotic, hazy atmospherics draw us into their web and we’re tangled up in a mesh of vibrating whirrs and echoing, distorted voices.Sublime business from an Apollonia favorite…

Italian rudeboy Ivan Iacobucci brings his brand of lowdown funk-influenced tech house to Apollonia with this sterling threetracker.Over two decades of hard work and dedication to his craft has culminated in Ivan’s untainted reputation andwidespread respect within the underground from true heads like Zip and, of course, the Apollonia boys. His love of jazz in evident throughout this EP which is full of subtlety and depth, pulsating b-lines and smooth chords are interlaced with razor-sharp percussion and delicate keys. The first track ‘Old In On’ has a laid back, though driving, groove, pushing forward with a hefty bassline that is perfectly counterbalanced by the light twinkling keys and barely-there pads. ‘ScrisFrumos’ encapsulates more of an ominous, tribal feeling with intricate effects trickling through every pore of its deep, dark exterior. Its atmospherics keep you intrigued, voices echo in the background and a few moments of softened chimes reallyintensify the already mysterious vibe. ‘Mini Ass’ channels more of that electro-funk that forms the foundation of Ivan’s love for music, haywire radio pulses prance around stuttered beats, giving it a slightly cosmic feel, while pipes add a more organic nuance to the track. Absolutely masterful work from Ivan, and another inspired addition to the Apollonia catalogue.

Two of Paris' most respected artists get together for their second collaborative extended player this year. Dan Ghenacia and Chris Carrier have been entrenched in the electronic scene in their hometown for a long while now, both men building a strong rep through consistently great music and DJ performances. Earlier this year they joined forces on ‘Just A Sin', released via Carrier's Adult Only label, now they're back with the follow-up on Apollonia. Across three deadly tracks, the duo exploretheir love of music making machines to the fullest – each track taking its name from ‘sweet heart', translated into differentlanguages. ‘Schatzi' works off a modular synth, bursting out of the blocks with a wobbly bassline which supports a range ofsubtle effects together with infrequent vocal clips. As the track progresses warm rising pads and female vocal snippets create an entrancing atmosphere. Next up we get an Arabian twist with ‘Habibi'. A pervading air of mystery presents itself right fromthe off, with warped voices lurking in the background as the rhythm lures you into its murky groove. As the track progresses more eerie pads and effects are layered over the stepping bassline giving it a very creepy feel. Finally, French vibes comes through with ‘Cherie' on side B. The track draws its energy from the busy, though crisp, percussive elements and a b-line that groans in unison with the beats. A simple chime remains present throughout, keeping it minimal yet interesting.
