Kalaha + Hilal Kaya With Aarhus Jazz Orchestra
Tutku

Release:2022 / EU – Original
Genre:Organic Grooves
Supported by the world-renowned Aarhus Jazz Orchestra, multi-award winning quartet Kalaha present Tutku, an energetic fusion of jazz, Turkish psychedelic rock and 80’s inspired synth-pop. Out August 26th on April Records, their most ambitious and adventurous record yet album pairs the self branded “Danish band with world roots” with a big band committed to embracing innovative contemporary jazz and guest star vocalist Hilal Kaya. Formed after an improvised set at 2013’s Strøm Festival in Copenhagen, the four members that make up Kalaha share a collective passion for collaboration and an open-minded approach to music making. Each being active members of different corners of the Danish music scene, the result of their combined musical personalities is refreshingly modern cross between thoughtful songwriting and high level jazz-minded musicianship. While their 2021 release ‘Mystafa’ saw them collaborate with a number of vocalists, ‘Tutku’ sees the entrancing vocals of Danish/Turkish artist Hilal Kaya as the focal point of the record. Grounded by the driving sounds of Anatolian rock, the nine track work weaves between folk, spiritual jazz, and even disco, serving up a wealth of danceable grooves and rich harmony. Produced by Kalaha themselves, the production style shifts between the close, modern sound of a pop outfit and the expansive, reverberated sound of a 20 piece ensemble. Soaring over the top of AJO’s intricate ensemble arrangements are an expansive network of electronic sounds, carefully designed and played by two of Denmark’s leading synthesists, Jens “Rumpistol” B. Christiansen and Mikael “Spejderrobot” Elkjær. With careers including international recognition from UK trendsetter Gilles Peterson, their immersive sound-world of melodic synth solos and explosive dub-tinged sound effects transform Tutku into a large ensemble record unlike any other. Completed by legendary drummer Emil de Waal and in-demand guitarist Niclas Knudsen, Kalaha’s striking and colourful visual identity shares the Middle Eastern influence of their music and enhances the psychedelic nature of their songs, invoking otherworldly imagery in the listeners’ minds and rounding Tutku off as a cohesive, well thought out recorded statement.

Armed with his friend and mentor’s old horn, trumpeter Tomasz Dąbrowki assembles an eclectic cast of musicians to pay tribute to the late Tomasz Stanko with his release The Individual Beings. ”I don’t feel lonely. I am an individual being” Polish jazz legend Stanko famously said. Dąbrowski embraces this quote in a musical reflection on what his time with Stanko taught him. “We’re all Individual Beings, and our individuality is the strongest thing we have to offer the world – it has to be protected and developed” he said. The result is a deeply personal, yet powerful celebration nested in a vast sonic soundscape. At times reminiscent of Wayne Shorter-era Miles Davis Quintet, at others minimalist and tense, the occasional use of electronics adds to the exploratory and forward-thinking vibe of the music. In his self-proclaimed “search for simplicity” the trumpeter and bandleader is joined by six other musicians, chosen specifically for this project for their representation and manifestation of one of the things most important to Dąbrowski: “personality, both on and off stage.” Aside from saxophonist Fredrik Lundin (Denmark) and drummer Knut Finsrud (Norway), the group’s members are Polish or Polish-based and arrived into the bandleader’s life sometime over the last years. It’s perhaps testament to the young Tomasz’s connection with his hero-turned-colleague that he performed this music with the trumpet on which Stanko did some of his best work in the 1990s, on loan from his family. Since moving to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 2008, Dąbrowski has displayed an unceasing curiosity, stretching and expanding his jazz roots and emerging as one of the most exciting and well-rounded trumpeters in Europe. The Individual Beings is the next riveting chapter in the story of a real-time rising star and a mature, reflective homage to a late, great legend..

Genre:Organic Grooves
Danish group Human Being Human are a piano trio with a name that is a question as much as a statement, in which bassist-composer Torben Bjørnskov gently asks just what being human entails. Out June 17th on April Records, Equals brings together three players who musically ponder our need to share love and be good. Idolising the likes of Gandhi and John Lennon in his younger years, Danish bassist Torben Bjørnskov believes this message of unity is what we need in a world full of conflict. With the jazz piano tradition at its core, Human Being Human’s sound is full of surprises and possibility. Passages of timeless openness, energetic, virtuosic improvisation and propulsive syncopated riffs rub shoulders with influences that span Bach counterpoints, electronica and ambient music. Thoughtful, intricate compositions serve as the vessel through which the ensemble can explore their collective musicality. Bjørnskov likens their approach to playing to his daily walk through rural Denmark’s woods and lakes, taking notice of the subtle changes in the landscape and seasons with each passing day. “It’s never really the same walk. And it’s the same playing jazz music. When you play a tune, you want it to be open. It’s the same chords, but every time it’s a new expression. You’re searching for something.” The three musicians’ distinctly different backgrounds, ages, and musical identities contribute to Equals incredibly rich sound; Bjørnskov comes from the tradition of melodic Danish upright bassists, pianist Esben Tjalve is a modern player now based on London’s burgeoning jazz scene whilst drummer Frederik Bülow belongs to the new Nordic jazz generation, complete with rhythmic trickery and crossover grooves. What unites them is their mutual respect for the melodic and melancholic tone associated with Scandinavian jazz and a desire to spread their message of positivity with anyone who is ready to hear it.

Fragments from ancient wars and revolutions resonate in the music that brings both elements of classical music and jazz into a strong format that has never been more relevant. An orchestral, compositional and improvisational music that seeks to overwhelm and undress the listener’s reservations. The band releases their debut album on April Records 29th of April 2022. The debut release “Alawari”, is the distillate of several years of work, immortalized in one album like a musical manifesto that wants to revitalize the authentic music experience. In 2016, the project started consisting of six musicians who quickly made themselves noticed by their telepathic and fabulous animal-like expressions. This was the message after the band in 2017 won the Young Jazz competition, which was the starting point for a European tour in Germany and Poland as well as the intake of some of the most prominent venues in Denmark.. Simon Forchhammer, Jonatan Bak, Sune Sunesen, Frederik Engell, Carlo Becker, and Asger Nissen constitutes the group that through a strong instrumental and compositional surplus seeks to create one intense and present experience that tears the world apart, and invite the listener to rebuild and put it back together. One of the new waves in Nordic jazz is the reinvention of the piano trio. Quite a few takes on this well proven musical concept has emerged in the last few years, but none of them with the sublime refined rawness of Little North. The three mysteriously mature musicians, pianist Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen, bassist Martin Brunbjerg Rasmussen and drummer Lasse Jacobsen, have, in spite of their relatively young age and their relatively short careers, conjured up an expressive and alluring artistic manifestation of beauty and almost holistic perfection, in their collective musical exertions, where equilibristic improvisational passages interchange with strictly arranged movements. Little North are in many ways carrying the legacy of Jan Johansson, the Swedish godfather of Nordic piano jazz concurrently adding their own very elegant touch, which makes this, their new album, an important contribution to the new wave of the tidal jazz currents, placing them right up there with the massively popular Svaneborg Kardyb and Bremer/McCoy. In 2016 Little North released their first album ‘Yonder’ produced by Jonathan Bremer (of Bremer/McCoy) and the band’s drummer, Lasse Jacobsen, released the album ‘A Painted Beginning’ in 2018 with a quintet in his own name. In 2019 Little North placed 2nd in the national competition for young talented jazz bands in Denmark. Little North’s new album was recorded live at Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, June 2019.

There’s of course a long and well-documented lineage of Scandinavian music which brings together melancholic Nordic soundscapes with the deep tradition of jazz. Little North, a young piano trio out of Denmark, is by no means an exception to this, but their third album, 'Finding Seagulls' sees them writing the next chapter of this rich tradition. Already highly-acclaimed in their home country of Denmark, the group spent their formative years playing and composing together, developing a chemistry and intuition which belies their youth. Moving seamlessly between composition and improvisation, their poetic ‘melody-first’ writing often masks a deep complexity which bubbles just below the surface. In the group's own words: "The title of the album,'Finding Seagulls', is a metaphor for the search for land in an ocean of endless possibilities. When a seagull appears on the open sea, you know land is nearby. As a trio we are constantly in search of new sounds and stories." This album is a representation of that search. Little North brings together the warmth of American jazz with the cold, minimalist sounds of the North, creating that Nordic sound loved by so many: atmospheric, cinematic, captivating... somehow gloomy and joyful at the same time.

Cecilie Strange grew up in a musical home and she began playing the saxophone already at age 12. Strange has studied music in the Danish city of Odense with the great jazz saxophonist Hans Ulrik and in New York with top saxophonist Chris Cheek, and her deep and soulful tenor sound has gained international acclaim. So far, she has released two solo albums and her third solo album, 'Blikan', will be released on April Records on April 16th, 2021. Together with guitarist Anna Roemer, she also makes up the ambient electro jazz duo, Kaleiido, who have collaborated with names like Mikkel Hess, Kasper Tranberg, Anders "ac" Christensen og Stine Steendorph. Besides that, Strange has also played in various jazz ensembles and folk groups and even in one pop band. "Blikan", an Icelandic word derived from the Old Saxon language, means “to shine" or "to appear”. And as its title suggests, 'Blikan' came together almost magically. Recorded at The Village in Copenhagen on June 10 and 11, 2019, the two-day session was the first time Cecilie Strange had ever played with the three artists she intuitively knew were the ideal ensemble to manifest her vision: pianist Peter Rosendal, bassist Thommy Andersson and drummer Jacob Høyer. Their collaboration was so creatively inspired it produced not just one, but two, full-length albums. 'Blue', the tenor saxophonist’s second release as a leader, came out on April Records in May of 2020 to glowing reviews. 'Blikan' brings the session full circle, and is an essential companion piece to 'Blue'. Both herald Strange’s arrival as an exciting new voice in today’s dynamic Copenhagen jazz scene, as both a deeply intuitive tenor player and a visionary composer. Acutely attuned to the natural landscape, in both her native Denmark, and all the Far North countries around it, Strange paints sketches of Scandinavia with an achingly melancholic palette of tonal colors that also radiate with hope and light.

Genre:Organic Grooves
Danish trombonist Lis Wessberg has enjoyed a 30-year career as a side(wo)man with a whole host of jazz and pop stars, touring internationally and featuring on more than 40 albums. Now, three decades after graduating from the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen, she prepares to release her debut album Yellow Map. The nine original compositions showcase the mellifluous melding of the acoustic trombone with more electronic and groove-based elements - as well as a special guest appearance of long-time collaborator drummer/percussionist Marilyn Mazur. The tunes were written specifically for this lineup - pianist Steen Rasmussen, bassist Lennart Ginman and drummer Jeppe Gram - bringing a real sense of familiarity to the proceedings and allowing that unpredictable air of mystery and risk-taking that defines many great albums. Wessberg herself cites ‘Cool Jazz’ icons such as Lee Konitz, Ben Webster, Chet Baker as major influences. It’s perhaps apparent in her personal approach, but the overall effect is much more cinematic: layers of sounds and instruments provide light and darkness, sincerity and excitement, joy and reflection. Above all, though, Wessberg stays true to her concept that a good melody and a full, rich sound are the two most important elements of both performing and composing. She leads the way with a vocal trombone tone filled with warmth and emotion.

Genre:Organic Grooves
Energetic contemporary jazz and intricate compositions cloaked in pop-like simplicity lead the way in the latest release from Danish pianist Morten Schantz and his trio, out 16th Sept on April Records. ‘Passenger’ - their third studio album - revels in exploring both the familiar and the unexpected, offering a modern jazz extension to the iconic Scandinavian piano trio sound. Rooted in thoughtful songwriting, the album moves seamlessly from comforting harmony of folk and pop music to extended passages of energetic virtuosic improvisation, propulsive syncopated riffs, and attitude-infused bluesy bass-lines. Taken as a whole, Morten’s compositional skill creates a series of songs which can feel more like a mini-suite with their labyrinthine hooks and through-composed sensibility. Continuing in the vein of the ensemble’s critically acclaimed 2014 release Unicorn and Morten’s 2017 release Godspeed (Edition Records), the group’s palette is extended with the inclusion of horns, percussion, and Ondes Martenot. Their 15 years of performing together can be heard through the ease in which they weave through their rich array of influences. The three musicians are highly active on the Danish and worldwide music scenes, each with impressive reputations and accolades under their belts. Drummer Janus Templeton was awarded the Grammy for ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ in 2007, Bassist Morten Ankarfeldt has released over 60 albums across his career, and Morten Schantz himself has been awarded the prestigious Young Nordic Jazz Comets, numerous compositional grants from the Danish Arts Council, and been nominated for two Danish Music Awards.

Genre:Organic Grooves
Emil de Waal’s 2021 release Vente re-introduced the world to a free-spirited Danish group with a nostalgic sensibility and a style which runs from trad jazz, to guitar-led country music and bubbling organ-led grooves. But in much the same way that their music rewards patience and attention, so too does their back-catalogue. Having joined forces with happening Danish label April Records during covid, they are set to re-release their 2015 offering Handmade In Denmark for an international audience - and with a first-time vinyl edition. That’s not to say it slipped the net completely last time around; renowned jazz writer Dave Sumner certainly caught it, describing the magical bond between the musicians and music which hits “that dreamy sweet-spot between wakefulness and a night of peaceful sleep.” But for those new to the party, it gives a chance to map the early iteration of a group whose playing expertly mixes a certain timeless quality with a seemingly unending stream of fresh ideas. The fascinating line-up sees 80-year old clarinet legend Elith "Nulle" Nykjær with jazzrock-pop drummer Emil de Waal, pensive Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren and original group keyboardist Søren Kjærgaard. Writing the liner notes, Danish newspaper critic Henrik Palle notes: “These four diverse musicians share a deeply rooted love of music as a phenomenon which enables them to connect on a level above age, ethnicity and musical background. And as they stand on that level, playing their hearts out, they transcend into a sphere of congenial creativity. The reciprocal inspiration is flaming.” Approaching improvisation with an almost childlike curiosity, De Waal’s warm drum sound underpins the woody clarinet, the gentle throb of the organ and carefully chosen colours from steel guitar, mandola, celeste, marimba and more… Taken as a whole, the nine-tracks are eminently unclassifiable. From “part 1970s tv theme song, part new cool collective jam, and 100% catchy” (Bird Is The Worm) to intricate and rhythmically gifted melodies, there’s something for everyone to discover. And finally, as Palle points out, the album answers that burning question of what folk duo Simon & Garfunkel’s iconic The Sound of Silence would sound like without vocals, played on a tin can music box..!

A ‘dosage’ is a form of sweetness, often a pinch of sugar, added during the production of champagne to balance out its inherent acidity. Inspired by this metaphor, Danish quintet Otooto strives to find the perfect balance between sweetness and maturity in their craft, as their genre-bending second album, ‘Dosage’ shows. Following on from their 2021 album ‘This Love Is For You’, ‘Dosage’ sits somewhere between the nostalgic and the modern. Lush synth layers, the warble of tape machines, dance-music influenced grooves, and soaring horn melodies over a landscape of rich gospel-tinged harmony are reminiscent of Virginian hip-hop/jazz group Butcher Brown with a European twist. Passages of solo electric bass, a delicate vocal ballad, moments of chaotic free-jazz energy, 90’s inspired rap verses, lap-steel guitar and flowing saxophone solos come together to craft a musical landscape full of surprises and impossible to pin down. Each member of the five piece is an active contributor to the vibrant Danish jazz scene, with a slew of albums under their belts, international tours, and growing reputations. And, in a fresh twist, they welcome special guest rapper E. Brown and Swedish alt-pop artist Lucky Lo to the mix. United by the belief that jazz has historically been an evolving musical reflection of the current cultural landscape, the quintet takes influence from styles of contemporary popular music. Funk, ambient electronic music, shoegaze, and r’n’b are skillfully combined with their jazz sensibilities to create something which bubbles and sparkles like the drink which inspired it.

Swedish multi-instrumentalist and composer Gustaf Ljunggren has teamed up with Icelandic Bass Guitar player and composer Skúli Sverrisson (Laurie Anderson, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Bill Frisell, Blonde Redhead ) to create an album that wishes to offer the listener private musical spaces to dwell in for a while. Ljunggren’s musical language is clear, gentle, and melodic, and the pieces chosen for this album all share a sense of weaving past and future together into the present. Gustaf Ljunggren reflects about the music on Floreana: “I listened inwards, and it sounded like this. Melodies came to the surface, and I chose to say ‘yes’ to them, embrace them, carry them forward. My musical partner on this album, Skúli Sverrisson, has been with me throughout this process; embracing the music with both profound dedication and artistic boldness.” The music on the album grants the listener access to something that’s forgotten or undiscovered. There’s a sensuousness throughout the work; musical spaces that reveal possibilities to listen inwards, aided by repetition in melodies and patterns. The music doesn’t seek climaxes as much as it seeks states of presence and attention. The live concerts with Gustaf Ljunggren and Skúli Sverrisson will explore the spaces the music on Floreana invites to. Two of northern Europe’s most distinctive instrumentalists will interpret Ljunggren’s compositions with a strong attention to the environment where the music is performed. The audience can expect the performers to display a deep commitment to the presence of the music as it unfolds.

The re-release of Thomas Agergaard Quartet’s ‘Testing 1-2-3-4’ is by all means the promise of an unexpected pleasure. Here we have jazz! The ingenious collaboration of four of the, at the time, most promising musical minds, stretching out into uncharted territory, relying solely on their readiness and profound ability to respond to any impulses reaching their inner ears, is a stellar demonstration of how far this noble art form can take the music. Fresh and ample sounding, as if it was recorded last week, the quartet, consisting of saxophonist Thomas Agergaard, pianist Carsten Dahl, bassist Lennart Ginman and drummer Thomas Blachman, performs with the deepest soulfulness and togetherness, which is bound to make this record a no longer overlooked classic. Thomas Agergaard, tenor saxophone - has no need to excel with a wealth of tones, but much rather fables in his own, subdued tempo. Thomas has played with a wealth of international artists, such as Django Bates, Miroslav Vitous, Andrew Hill, Bob Berg, Marilyn Mazur, Niels Peter Molvær, Lars Larsson, John Tchicai and many others. Carsten Dahl, piano - started out as a drummer, before becoming one of the most expressive Danish jazz pianists, with an intuitive style that, unlike the one cultivated by many of his peers, does not lead to as many tones as possible in the shortest possible time. Lennart Ginman, bass – has that deep, round velvety tone that so many bass players strive for. He has played bass with almost everybody and with a passion for electronica he has often fused his bass playing with computer based styles, but here we hear him in the raw. Thomas Blachman, drums - has earned his national fame as a judge on the Danish version of the tv show X-Factor, although his sublime drumming and compositional skills should be more than enough. His melodic approach shines through every beat he plays and it makes the quartet stand out real sharp. Thomas Agergaard Quartet’s ‘Testing 1-2-3-4’ was recorded in 1998 and was previously released on Thomas Blachman’s record label ManRec as a CD only.

Merging the simple with the complex Whereabouts is the latest project from Danish guitarist/composer Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh. The project has been developed over the past few years and culminates with the album, Whereabouts, which will be released on October 2nd 2020, on April Records. Whereabouts will be the second release from Rasmus Oppenhagen Krogh and compared to Krogh’s critically acclaimed debut album, Distill, from 2017, this album marks new artistic directions for Krogh, both in terms of exploring the spheric versus the rhythmic dimensions, in the meeting between organic and manipulated sound sources and through its special focus on percussion. Whereabouts explores the intersection between improvisation/composition and simplicity/complexity, the relation between time and space and the sonic qualities of the musicians gathered in unity. The group consists of some of the leading voices of the contemporary Danish jazz scene, who have all worked across genres and borders, and are known for their work with internationally acclaimed bands/artists such as Girls in Airports, Jakob Bro, Paul Motian and Irah among others. Krogh’s debut album Distill was released by Centrifuga/Gateway in 2017 to positive reviews. The album was selected as album of the week by Danish Radio P8 Jazz and was highlighted as one of the ten best Danish jazz releases that year by the acclaimed Danish jazz blog Jazznyt. Besides his work as a composer and as a bandleader, Krogh has worked, as a guitarist, with artists such as Takykardia, Kentaur, Guldimund, Schultz and Forever, Jesper Zeuthen and many more.

It is as if their sound reflects a true friendship; a place in which there is space for both playfulness and sensitivity, melancholia and pure joy. In October 2016 they released their critically acclaimed debut LP, ‘Easy Living’, which was one of the most played records on Danish Radio P8 Jazz and they have now been in the studio yet again and a whole new record, consisting of their own compositions, alongside carefully selected standards, now finally sees the light of day, here in October 2020, by way of April Records. This new album is entitled ‘Mosaïque’ and is produced by Oilly Wallace, Johannes Wamberg and Jonathan Bremer and is recorded at Bremer’s Voodoo Bug Studios. Describing the record in their own words, the two young musicians say: “Our new record is the fruit of one year’s work in the studio, where we have refined our consonance and our repertoire, and pursued the narrative that lies within our musical vision. One could say that we have cut to the bone and have dived deeper into our own sound.” And in the leftover bone there is a marrow. And its substance there are mature blood cells. Boys have become men and the music has aged, just like good wine.

Kalaha's powerful and anarchist way of playing with genres and musical traditions shines through on their new album, 'Mystafa' Kalaha are known for being eternally adventurous in their search through the outer limits of both the musical and the geographical spectre. As a live act they are captivating and energetic and they are known to set the dance floor on fire and put their audience in a trance. To obtain this, the band uses elements of everything from psych rock and improv jazz to Anatolian funk and acid techno. And now Kalaha are ready with yet another well-produced and genre-bending album, which includes the tracks, 'Dans Det Op', which has been a big radio hit in Denmark, and features Danish psych rock icon Uffe Lorenzen (of Baby Woodrose fame) on vocals, plus the political funk banger, 'Özgürüm Ben', which incorporates the band's regular collaborator, Hilal Kaya, on Turkish vocals, and is currently getting a lot of airplay on Danish National Radio. On 'Mystafa', Kalaha visit all four corners of the world; there is Brazilian samba from the west, Turkish 70s style music from the east, African highlife and desert blues from the south and Uffe Lorenzen, plus rising Danish folk star, Hjalte Ross, from the north. Kalaha manage to create an entirely unique universe of sound, in which the listener is taking part in a trail blazing car chase through the bazaar of Istanbul in one moment, and in the next moment, they are floating through the cosmic eternity of outer space - only to land in the middle of a love ceremony in Mali, with Moussa Diallo as the high priest. Especially the title track shows a far-reaching musical range and a certain flair for both depth and gravity, but also for humor, which according to the band itself is an essential part of the band's fellowship and musicality.

Formed in 2019 by trumpeter Jonas Due (born 1993) and saxophonist Oilly Wallace (born 1996), who are the composing duo of the group, Otooto has quickly gained attention from a number of broadcasting stations and critics and they can already look back on numerous live shows plus the release of several singles. All on April Records. The sound of Otooto is defined by the feather light and lyrical melodies created by Wallace and Due, and the way these are combined with the characteristic sound of the vintage synth, Juno 106. Add to that a neo soul/modern R&B groove and voila! The songs all spark with a sense of hope and joy, as they unfold in a harmonious, yet playful, way. The album features eleven tracks that take the listener deeper and deeper into a swirling and inventive mix of varying moods and genres, ranging from west coast synth pop to mellow jazz. Otooto is in many ways a melting pot, presenting five well-known figures of Danish jazz,in a new and fresh way.

The album 'Blessings' by Jakob Dinesen/Anders Christensen/Laust Sonne will be released on April 9th, 2021, on April Records. Saxophone player Jakob "Dino" Dinesen and bass player Anders “ac” Christensen have been household names on the Danish jazz scene since the nineties, where they played together in the now legendary Once Around the Park. Here they are joining up with drummer Laust Sonne. Laust Sonne is one of the most versatile musicians in Denmark and he has been the drummer in the popular Danish rock band, D-a-d, for over 20 years. He has also played drums in the avant jazz rock outfit, Bugpowder, and has made a career for himself with his own rock band, Dear. He has also recorded two solo albums and in 2007 he received the prestigious Danish music award, Ken Gudman Prisen. Anders "ac" Christensen has been a member of Paul Motian’s ensemble and has played in Polish jazz legend Tomasz Stańko’s band. In Denmark, he has played with the Hess brothers in Spacelab, for over 25 years. In 2009 he made his only solo album so far, ‘Dear Someone’, featuring Aaron Parks and Paul Motian. “ac” is highly in demand among Danish jazz musicians and he has even played in a lot of rock bands, like Sort Sol and The Raveonettes. Jakob Dinesen has made a long string of albums in his own name and has received several prizes. He has played with loads of internationally acclaimed jazz musicians, such as Paul Motian, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Gomez, Ben Street, Tony Allen, Nasheet Waits and Steve Swallow. He has also been a member of the acclaimed Danish jazz groups Hugo Rasmussen Allstarz and Beautiful Day and has played with Danish musicians as distinct as Thomas Blachman, Thomas Helmig and Lars H.U.G.. The three musicians have known each other for many years. In their younger days, they often ended up together, playing late night jams and gigs at parties. The corona outbreak in the first half of 2020 finally brought the three musicians together again, as mos of their other plans were cancelled because of the virus. As a blessing in disguise, they began to play together again, in the rehearsal room. They found, and created, a space for their thoughts and ideas. A space for listening and playing.

Andreas Toftemark is a young and talented Danish saxophonist and composer, who has spent the last 8 years of his life making a career for himself abroad; with 1 year in Sweden, 3 years in Amsterdam and 4 years in New York. In New York he made a living as a professional jazz saxophonist, for all of the time that he was living there, and he has been very inspired and influenced by the capital of jazz. Toftemark has studied with prominent names, such as Joel Frahm, Ben Wendel, Sam Yahel and Eric Alexander. He has performed around the world and he has played with many internationally acclaimed jazz musicians, like Peter Bernstein, Rodney Green, Ethan Iverson and Paul Sikivie. The six tracks on 'A New York Flight' are melodic and well played and they are all driven by the rhythmic open-mindedness that jazz is moving towards today. This is something that can be heard on both the two tracks that Andreas Toftemark has composed himself and on the four jazz standards which the quartet also play. It is swinging and at the same time open to the individual interpretations of both the listeners and of the musicians. The overall subject of the songs are love and passion, whether it's the love for New York - or perhaps the regained love for Denmark...? - or the love expressed on the track, which was the first single from the album, and which also has the most mysterious title of all of the tracks on the album, '2223', which is a row of numbers that seem to follow Toftemark in love and in friendships. The sound on these recordings is clear and warm and it reveals the many details in acoustic music, thanks to producer Hans Henrik Holst, who is a man with excellent ears and an amazing ability to make music blossom. Andreas Toftemark Quartet consists of some of the absolutely finest young musicians on the contemporary Danish jazz scene; Felix Moseholm on bass, Andreas Svendsen on drums, Calle Brickman on piano and, of course, Andreas Toftemark himself on sax. Each one of them is an overwhelming joy to listen to, and brought together in a band, they bring music to a both sincere and playful level, which we only rarely have the luck to hear.

Vente (The Danish word for "wait") is the sixth album and the latest result, of a long-running collaboration between drummer Emil de Waal, clarinetist Elith "Nulle" Nykjær, multi-musician Gustaf Ljunggren and hammond organist Dan Hemmer. Emil de Waal is the main man behind the project Vente. He has played drums with an impressive line-up of names in Danish rock, pop and jazz, ranging from Bagdad Dagblad, over Old News and Maluba Orchestra, to his current band Kalaha, an ensemble known for mixing electronic music with elements of jazz and African music, who just released their fourth album in February, 2021 on April Records. Emil de Waal has played within all genres of music and this is something that can be heard in all of the nine tracks on Vente. Elith "Nulle" Nykjær, who is 84 years old, is a living legend in Danish jazz and has had an impressive career as an actor, writer, musician and composer at DR (The Danish Broadcasting Corporation). Since the late '80s, he has toured in both Europe and in the US with his ensemble, Nulle & Verdensorkestret ("Nulle & The World Orchestra") and the repertoire of this very popular group has affected the repertoire on Vente. Gustaf Ljunggren was born in Stockholm, Sweden and lives in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he studied to become a saxophone player at The Rhythmic Music Conservatory. He became a household name in Denmark when he was the bandleader on the Danish talkshow 'Det Nye Talkshow' in the period 2009- 2011. He has performed and recorded with a wide variety of artists, such as Robyn, Teitur and Caroline Henderson. Ljunggren is often referred to as a "multi-instrumentalist" and he masters both wind instruments, strings and keys. This ability of his has been a great asset in his collaboration with Emil de Waal, which has been running for more than 20 years already. Dan Hemmer is known as one half of the duo, Lindberg Hemmer Foundation, with the late, great Danish cult figure, entertainer and bass player, Morten Lindberg aka Master Fatman. Besides that, Hemmer has played with virtually everyone within all genres of music, and over the last decade or so, he and Danish saxophonist Michael Blicher, have been playing with none less than American funk master - drummer Steve Gadd. The four musicians on Vente all come from their individual musical backgrounds, bringing with them elements of their personal history. And when they get together to play, they don't intend for the music to come out in any particular way - it just has to feel right for all of them. This free-spirited approach to playing music, combined with the album's delicate mixture of originals, written by various members of the ensemble, and carefully selected jazz-standards, played with the group's groovy personal touch, gives the music on Vente a nostalgic, yet timeless, quality. Listening to Vente puts you in a mellow and comfortable state of mind and gives you a much-needed break in these trying times. Vente is the perfect soundtrack for a lazy day in on your own or a relaxing evening with your loved ones.

The future of jazz has always been shaped by young jazz musicians seeing new modes of expression. And as the 21st Century has entered its third decade, a new generation of young jazz musicians from around the world show us that the music is in very good hands. Shaping the future of jazz for the generations to come, they’ll ensure that it never becomes stagnant. From Copenhagen and Denmark, we are proud to introduce the new orchestra Tabloid. From their different musical backgrounds, the band members, Johannes Wamberg (guitar), Jonathan Bremer (bass), Oilly Wallace (saxophone), Felix Ewert (drums) and Malthe Rostrup (keys) has from day one made their footprints on the growing, roaring, and vibrant young Danish jazz scene. Without having released one song, they have already played a lot of sold-out shows, among others 3 days in a row during Copenhagen Jazz Festival. and many more are on the way. The first album release will be the self-titled ‘Tabloid’ on the 17th of September 2021. With simple melodies wrapped in a bit more complex harmonies, Tabloid gives us a modern 21st century jazz/soul. It’s no secret that Johannes Wamberg, the composer, is a fan of the American Jazz/funk/soul sound from the 70’es & 80’s but by adding the young band members background in classic jazz and the new Danish pop (soul) scene, they bring the sound up to date. The songs on the album are groovy (and danceable), but also includes ballads. On that background Tabloid invites us to either tap our feets or just lay back and enjoy the music and life. Bonus info: The Tabloid band members has known each other for a long time, almost back to childhood. The have gone to school, studied, and hanging out together. Even though they still are young, each of them has played in many different constellations over the years, and they all have made their own footprints and remarks on the music scene both nationally as internationally. E.g., Johannes Wamberg has tributed with his guitar on numerous recordings, Jonathan Bremer as a part of Bremer/McCoy, Oilly Wallace the Best New Jazz name of the Year 2016, Felix Ewert behind the drums for Julias Moon, Andreas Odbjerg, Nik & Jay and many more and Malthe Rostrup as part of the Jada crew. Finally, as Tabloid, they join forces!

Ånd Ud is the second album from Danish jazzers I Just Came from the Moon. Following years of touring both nationally and internationally, the album is a natural follow up to the debut album ‘Hoax’, but also a more general reflection on growing up and settling down. As Frederik, bass-player and bandleader puts it: “For us, all the songs on Ånd Ud navigate a world of both deep melancholy and natural beauty. There’s a lot of saying goodbye to your carefree youth in the music, mixed with a profound serenity when realizing that what lies ahead might be even better.” The music was recorded in a tiny vacation home on the small island of Fur in Jutland. Just the band and one technician for a couple of extended weekends. Later, Ijcftm produced and mixed most of the music themselves. “We tried a few producers - and were super fortunate to have Stephen Koszler do the mix of ‘White’ (the first single) - but in the end, it felt the most natural to finalize the rest of the music ourselves. The songs are really personal, and we were absolutely sure how we needed them to sound.” says Tobias, who plays drums and ended up mixing most of the music. The album will be released on the legendary and newly resurrected Danish jazz-label ‘April Records’ on February 25th, 2022, with three singles leading up to the release: Brothers (5th of November 2021), Dark Latin (10th of December 2021) and White (14th of January 2022).

With their captivating cinematic sound and a warm and intense presence, Little North bonds with their audience from the very first note. The sound of the band is way bigger than their classic piano trio constellation suggests. In a melting pot of modern minimalism and Nordic jazz tradition and with an intensity that draws threads to the jazz scene of New York, Little North has what it takes to add the next exciting chapter to the history of Scandinavian jazz. Their third album ‘Finding Seagulls’ has been warmly received by critics at home and abroad and has been ‘album of the week’ on Danish National Radio P8 Jazz. The album has received international airplay on UK Radio Jazz FM and Berlin Radio Flux FM, among others. On the upcoming album ‘Familiar Places’ the trio expands on their already well defined sound. The energy and warmth of the guitar and raw expressive intention from the trumpet, adds new depths to their musical universe, while the strong sound of the trio makes a continuum. ‘Familiar Places’ presents a wide range of emotions and sonic landscapes while continuously diving into the essence of Little North. ‘Familiar Places’ features Kasper Tranberg (dk) on trumpet and Viktor Spasov (se) on guitar. Tranberg has been a strong voice on the European music scene for more than two decades. Lately he is, beside his own work, known for his collaborations with a.o. Marc Ducret, Steve Swallow, Tim Berne, Django Bates, Tyshawn Sorey, Gianluigi Trovesi and Yusef Lateef. Swedish/Bosnian guitar jedi Viktor Spasov is a rising star hailing from Stockholm, Sweden. His easily recognizable and expressive sound on the guitar is beautifully integrated on ‘Familiar Places’. Spasov recently released the second EP in his own name, presenting story driven indie music in the form of a singer/songwriter.
