The singer Flora Purim, dubbed the “Brazilian Queen of Jazz”, is renowned for her membership of Chick Corea’s fusion project Return To Forever and for collaboration with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Gil Evans, Santana, Grateful Dead drummer Micky Hart and Jaco Pastorius, as well as longstanding pairings with her husband, Airto Moreira. Born in Rio to a pair of classical musicians in 1942, Purim discovered the work of Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner through her mothers’ clandestine airing of jazz 78s. Purim launched her professional career during the early 1960s and soon signed to RCA Victor, her debut album Flora É M.P.M. surfacing just as Brazil faced the military coup that would bring censorship to her work subsequently work. The debut sees Purim tackling bossa nova compositions by Edu Lobo and the team of Vinicius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra, among others; the unexpected hard-bop reading of “Hava Nagila” references both the singer’s Jewish heritage and the stunning fusion projects to come.

Belfast blues-rock showband Them was formed in 1964 at the blues club established by Van Morrison at the Maritime Hotel, the singles “Gloria” and “Here Comes The Night” making a dramatic impact. Following an American tour where the group played joint dates with The Doors, Morisson and bassist Alan Henderson found that a rival Them had been formed by keyboardist/drummer Pat McAuley, with guitarist Billy Harrison soon replaced by Pat’s brother Jackie. Legal action forced a name change to The Other Them, the new group recording singles for Island under the moniker Freaks of Nature, produced by noted American songwriter Kim Fowley. The album’s worth of material the group recorded with Fowley was issued in Sweden in 1967 on the Sonet label, and credited to The Belfast Gypsies.

Rightwing guitar god Ted “The Duck” Nugent formed hardrock garage band The Amboy Dukes in Chicago in 1964, after having played in The Royal High Boys and The Lourds in his native Detroit, the latter with singer John Drake. Subsequently returning to that city, the band soon garnered a reputation for Nugent’s searing solos and the unusual positioning of his Gibson Byrdland guitar. By the time they signed to Mainstream Records for this self-titled debut, the group featured former The Gang guitarist Steve Farmer, bassist Bill White, keyboardist Rick Lober and former Galaxy Five drummer TT Palmer, who would later be resident engineer at Electric Ladyland. Although not as well-known as sophomore LP Journey To The Center Of The Mind, the debut album has a fine mix of hardrocking originals and individual cover tunes, including some psychedelic numbers and a wonderful treatment of Big Joe Williams’ blues classic, “Baby Please Don’t Go”, which provided their first taste of chart success.

Françoise Madeleine Hardy became an international sensation during the early 1960s through her popular releases on Disques Vogue, the French jazz label that began showcasing chanson. Born in 1944 and raised in a single-parent household in the bustling Opera district of Paris, she had little contact with her father, though his gift of a guitar when she graduated high school aided her musical development. Charles Trenet and Cora Vaucaire were early influences, along with Elvis, Cliff Richard, The Everley Brothers, Paul Anka, Marty Wilde and Connie Francis, as heard on Radio Luxembourg. Answering a newspaper ad recruiting unknown singers while a freshman at the Sorbonne, Hardy signed to Disques Vogue in late 1961, scoring an instant success with single B-side, “Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles”, which brought her to the forefront of the Yé-yé movement, melding chanson with Anglophone rock and pop. Mon Amie La Rose, her fourth album, was released in 1964; backed by the Charles Blackwell orchestra, it contains “Dans Le Mode Entier”, which became a huge chart hit in English as “All Over The World.”

Bringing Frank Sinatra and bossa nova innovator Antonio Carlos Jobim together was another major step towards the introduction of bossa nova worldwide. The self-titled debut album they created together in early 1967 in Hollywood had the two titans backed by Claus Ogerman’s Orchestra, with Ogerman in charge of the lush arrangements. As is fitting for a project that aimed to plant bossa nova into the hearts and minds of north americans, europeans and others in the developed world, most of the Grammy-nominated album has ol’ blue eyes interpreting Jobim’s compositions for an international audience nonbrazilian show tunes “Baubles, Bangles And Beads” and “Change Partners” plus Cole Porter’s “I Concentrate On You” are also given the bossa treatment with Jobim on vocals, along with his reading of the ubiquitous “The Girl From Ipanema.”

The pairing of American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist Joao Gilberto for the 1964 album release Getz/Gilberto, along with bossa nova inventor/composer Tom Jobim, introduced bossa nova to the world at large and the momentous performance given by these innovators at Carnegie Hall on October 9 was a key part of the process. Unlike on the studio LP, which was completely collaborative, at Carnegie Hall, each performer and their backing musicians delivered individual sets, until they all joined together at the end to be led on several numbers by Joao’s wife Astrud, including the immortal “Girl From Ipanema.” And although the initial release on Verve left out the collaborative work with Astrud, this edition presents the entire proceedings with everything fully intact.
