Trumpeter Avishai Cohen leads a quartet consisting of pianist Yonathan Avishai, bassist Barak Mori, and drummer Nasheet Waits.

A year after his impressionistic, critically-lauded ECM debut Into The Silence, trumpeter Avishai Cohen's Cross My Palm With Silver introduces a program of new pieces which put the focus on the ensemble, on teamwork, with a quartet of the highest caliber. The adroit, almost telepathic interplay among the musicians allows Avishai Cohen to soar, making it clear why he is one of the most talked-about jazz musicians on the contemporary scene. "All of these people together are my dream team", says the charismatic trumpeter of fellow players Yonathan Avishai, Barak Mori and Nasheet Waits, who share his sense for daring improvisation and his feeling for structure. "I feel we're in a perfect place with the balance. It's open and there's so much room for the improvisation to take the music any place we can. At the same time the composition is very specific and the vibe is very direct and thought about." As with Into The Silence, Cross My Palm With Silver was produced by Manfred Eicher at Studios La Buissonne in the south of France.

Dark Nights is the soul-deep third album from rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s trio Triveni with bassist Omer Avital and drummer Nasheet Waits. Dark Nights also features guest performances by superstar clarinetist Anat Cohen and pianist Gerald Clayton. Avishai is also joined by French-Israeli singer-songwriter Keren Ann for a duet on “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” which sees the two indulging their shared love of Chet Baker. The purview of Dark Nights is wide, from intimate lyricism to electrifying virtuosity, from jazz standards to progressive originals. The classic balladry of Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life” and Charles Mingus’s “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” rubs shoulders with electronics-stoked compositions from Avishai’s pen that groove hard and burn slow, by turns. The New York Times has praised him as “an extravagantly skilled trumpeter, relaxed and soulful. . . deftly combining sensitivity and flair,” while DownBeat raved over the previous Triveni release, saying: “Cohen and company improvise together so wonderfully that they often sound shocked at their collective inventions.” Avishai is a member of the hit 3 Cohens band with his siblings Anat and Yuval, as well as the all-star SF Jazz Collective. But Dark Nights is Avishai Cohen’s state of the art.

Trumpeter Avishai Cohen, voted a Rising Star in this year’s DownBeat Critics Poll, releases Triveni II his second album with the Triveni band – his bold, electrifying trio with double-bassist Omer Avital and drummer Nasheet Waits. Triveni II is the follow-up to Introducing Triveni, which New York City Jazz Record called “easily one of the best jazz recordings of 2010.” Both albums were recorded in the same blockbuster two-day session in Brooklyn, with Triveni II featuring not only exciting originals by Cohen but inspired interpretations of tunes by Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman. Sparks fly on each of the 10 viscerally recorded tracks as Cohen, Avital and Waits engage in interplay that is as fleet as it is muscular, as progressive as it is full of soul.

The ensemble Triveni is the perfect conduit for the musical explorations of Avishai Cohen, who takes full advantage of the space and freedom this pianoless trio affords. Drawing from hard-bop, straight-up funk, and avant-garde, Nasheet Waits (Drums), Omer Avital (Bass) and Cohen effortlessly move from the American songbook to standards and Cohen's original compositions. Cohen's sometimes provocative and always soulful playing has never sounded so assured as he continues to establish himself as one of his generation's leading musical voices.

“If only nature always dealt with us as beautifully as this disc does” – Jeff Simon, The Buffalo News

“there’s no denying that it is a compelling and powerful piece of music” – Richard Marcus, BlogCritics Magazine

“…this music succeeds on its own, as a finely realized ambitious chamber project showcasing the virtuosity and stylistic range of a trumpeter who’s one of the most exciting voices ton the horn to emerge in this new century.” – George Kanzler Hot House Jazz Magazine

“…trumpeter Avishai Cohen’s pure, sweet trumpet tone and bent notes allow him to create sound pictures that depict gentle raindrops, a giant deluge, the eventual overflow and final sunshine to complete the cycle” – Jim Santella, All About Jazz

In part two of his “Big Rain” trilogy, trumpeter Avishai Cohen presents an intensely intimate recording featuring an unusual Piano (Yonatan Avishai) Percussion (Daniel Freedman) and Trumpet trio. The music, described by Cohen as “an instrumental meditation born of two notes” is haunting, touching and deeply spiritual, exposing yet another side of what DownBeat Magazine calls a “Singular Musicianship.”

Alternately moody and joyous, richly atmospheric yet beat-driven, the album features trumpeter Cohen with some of his most esteemed peers: Lionel Loueke on guitar and vocals, Jason Lindner (keyboards), Omer Avital (bass) and Daniel Freedman (drums and percussion). AFTER THE BIG RAIN is texturally rich, full of heated improvisation, group interplay and that funky kind of internationalist flavor Avishai is known for.
