‘Little Orphan Boy’ is the second single taken from album ‘This Is Brian Jackson’, presented with remixes by Two Soul Fusion, a.k.a. Louie Vega and Josh Milan.

The veteran artist’s first true solo LP in over 20 years, ‘This Is Brian Jackson’ is produced by Phenomenal Handclap Band founder Daniel Collás. Collás lovingly re-frames and updates ideas and demos that Jackson first laid down back in 1976, right around the time he recorded ‘Bridges’ with Gil Scott-Heron, for a solo project that never saw the light of day… until now.

Alongside his ‘Two Soul Fusion’ partner Josh Milan, Louie Vega gives the album’s closing track ‘Little Orphan Boy’ two truly vintage remix treatments, taking the song on an eclectic, soul-stirring, timeless journey. The extended ‘Two Soul Fusion’ mix calls to mind the golden era of Masters at Work productions, featuring a Latin-infused percussion groove, shimmering organs and in-the-cut funky guitar lines. The ‘Downtempo’ remix lets Brian Jackson’s vocals ride over a head-nodding, stripped back, yet equally soulful arrangement.

“A dream to work with Brian Jackson” says Louie Vega. “I mean, he’s a big part of our musical landscape and has been a huge inspiration in our lives. From way back to my early years in the Bronx, through to my DJing and producing career, into productions like Nuyorican Soul, Elements of Life, Kenlou, Brian and Gil have always been with us! Now to work on such an amazing song with Brian’s keyboard work and lead vocal, it made it so much easier for Two Soul Fusion (Josh and I) to find that pocket and groove. We had to create an epic piece and take you on a trip through several styles, it was calling for it. That’s due to the original work of Brian Jackson, a true Master at Work & Two Soul Fusion hero!!! I’m looking forward to seeing what’s next on the horizon with us and the one & only Brian Jackson.

Brian Jackson: “I have always loved the musicality and the rhythmic power that surges through the artistry of Louie Vega since I first heard him in Masters at Work. I made a silent wish that one day I would hear one of my songs given that special treatment. Imagine my elation to know that it would finally happen – with a song I wrote and recorded 45 years ago for a solo project that might have never happened if not for producer Daniel Collás and BBE chief Peter Adarkwah! Louie, along with Two Soul Fusion partner Josh Milan and I are alike in so many ways, I knew that if we ever got together, magic would happen and well… here’s to magic! My love and gratitude to Louie, Josh, Daniel, Peter and the beautiful BBE family.”

Over 2 decades since his last compilation on BBE Music, Jasper The Vinyl Junkie returns to the label with ‘Vinyl Junkie Thangs’ a bumper collection of effortlessly cool, eclectic grooves for heads and feet. Vinyl collector, DJ and music writer, Jasper The Vinyl Junkie has been with BBE since the very beginning, curating our second ever label release, 1997’s ‘Stop & Listen Vol. II’. It seems only right for him to rejoin us in our 25th year with another stash of funk-filled, jazzy cuts and edits, many of which are almost impossibly hard to find. “Even all the digital interference hasn’t stopped vinyl being a fantastic way to get your groove on. When I put together compilations like this back in the day, there were just 3 formats: Vinyl, CDs and Cassette Tapes. Now there’s a whole heap of ways to get your favourite tunes: downloads, streaming, youtube etc. etc… Even so, when I put an album together, I always do it with the analogue in mind, so it has a certain feel to it.” – Jasper The Vinyl Junkie Featuring sounds from all-time music heroes like Fred Wesley, The Fatback Band and D-Train’s Hubert Eaves alongside lesser known artists like Exile One, Ashantis and Funkshone, Jasper takes ‘Vinyl Junkie Thangs’ above and beyond the norm for this type of collection by also including a smattering of contemporary edits, remixes and new creations. Material by the likes of Basement Freaks, OPOLOPO, Jkriv & Free Magic and Mr Scruff, much of which has never been available on vinyl before, blends in perfectly with the classic material, giving this album extra depth and fresh dimensions.

UK hip hop’s original and best live band are back
with brand new album ‘Bring Out The Sound’,
released in February 2018 on BBE Music. Founded
in the early 90s by Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry,
The Herbaliser have earned every single accolade
they’ve received during almost 25 years of touring

groundbreaking albums on Ninja Tune and
providing one of the all-time highlights of the
‘Fabric Live’ mix series, The Herbaliser’s most
recent LP ‘There Were Seven’ was issued on their
own ‘Department H’ imprint back in 2012. Having

Inviting a carefully chosen group of guest vocalists
to join them in their London studio, ‘Bring Out The
Sound’ presents a diverse blend of soulful songs,
hip hop bangers and original instrumental funk
breaks, made all the more impressive by its
complete absence of sampling, an album from the
heat of The Herbaliser. Famous for his pop smash
‘Starz In Their Eyes’ (sadly as relevant now as it
ever was), Camden vocalist Just Jack lays down an
incredibly moving performance over lush horns
and strings on the instant classic ‘Seize The Day’.
The London Posse’s own Rodney P spits lyrical fre
alongside 28Luchi over the reggae-infused,
unmistakably British beats of ‘Like Shaft’. Former
Senseless Things member and Libertines
collaborator Mark Keds creates an almost
uncomfortably intimate, confessional atmosphere
on the intensely personal ’20 Years To The Day’.
Compared by Mark Ronson to a young Minnie
Ripperton, UK singer STAC’s voice cuts through
with a breathy kind of clarity on ‘Over and Over’.
But the Herbaliser band has always been so much
more than the sum of its collaborators. Languid,
powerful hip hop beats and uncompromising
production values underpin impressive
performances by all the band members, especially
the horn section who track after track, turn in
vintage performances. These guys make it all
sound so easy that by the time we reach
‘Takedown’, a track that sounds for all the world
like a forgotten b-boy anthem by The Incredible

The African beat's always been essential to Brazil's music. But now the new generation of musicians, singers and rappers are tweaking the basics of Fela's funk to fit with samba swing, bossa tempo and nordestino nous. John Armstrong's new compilation Afrobeat Brasil features 14 blazing tracks from 2011 to 2017 that nod towards Nigeria, Ethiopia, Mali and beyond – with feet firmly in Brazil.
For the first time outside Brazil, a careful selection of modern Afrobeat- inspired tunes from across several Brazilian genres, taking in cutting-edge players from Rio, São Paulo, Salvador, Porto Alegre –and even Paris. No slavish Fela Kuti copycats these, but rather Afrobeat and other specific African tempos and rhythms used as a blueprint, a buildingblock for new directions in Brazilian music.

Genre:Organic Grooves
Recorded during the summer of 1980 and originally released in 1982 on Spotlight Records, ‘Paz are Back’ was the second (and arguably the finest) album by the London jazz collective, founded by vibraphonist, composer and arranger Dick Crouch. Known for their original jazz-funk and Latin stylings, the band held a weekly Sunday residency at The Kensington pub in Holland Park for over 8 years, becoming a fixture at many London venues throughout the 70’s and 80’s, most notably Ronnie Scott’s.

For Paz, band leader Dick Crouch assembled a group of the finest jazz musicians working in London at the time. Piano, keyboard and synth player Geoff Castle was a mainstay of the band throughout the years, as well as playing and recording with George Coleman, Ian Dury & Georgie Fame to name but a few. He also composed the highly original and energetic track ‘Moonchild’, featured on this album.

Sax and flute player Ray Warleigh enjoyed a successful three decade career (sadly, he passed away in 2015), playing alongside Dusty Springfield, Marianne Faithfull, Scott Walker and Stevie Wonder as well as 9 years with PAZ. The full breadth of his musical dexterity is on display here, from the gritty alto sax solos featured on ‘Laying Eggs’ to his eerie home-made panpipes on ‘Horrors’.

Guitarist Ed Speight also worked extensively with Ian Dury and the Blockheads, as well as performing ‘Tubular Bells’ with Mike Oldfield on the QEH and BBC2. Now an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, Ed taught guitar and keyboard harmony between 1988 and 2010.

Bass player Ron Mathewson is best known for his years spent working with Ronnie Scott, but he also recorded with Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Ben Webster and Bill Evans (to whom the stunning ‘I Can’t Remember’ is dedicated). His absence on one album track is noted in its title ‘Where is Ron?’, so called because he realised the song required no bass-line (as the original liner notes stated: “this awareness of when not to play is part of his genius”).

Appearing with the band for the first time on ‘Paz are Back’, drummer Frank Gibson was perhaps better known for accompanying Leo Sayer, David Essex and Dusty Springfield, although jazz was always his first love. Following his time in the UK and touring the world, Frank returned to his native New Zealand, where he won three ‘Best Jazz Album’ awards and performed at the 1990 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

Capturing a group of prodigiously talented musicians at the height of their powers, ‘Paz Are Back’ features timeless original compositions from almost all the band members, as well as a unique cover of ‘Everywhere Calypso’ by Sonny Rollins and a truly frenetic, heavily improvised version of jazz standard ‘Dancing In The Dark’. A band who remained steadfastly resistant to being pigeonholed, incorporating a multitude of influences before ‘fusion’ became fashionable, Paz’s music stands the test of time magnificently, as evidenced by the staggering demand for original copies of this album.

Remastered and packaged with the original artwork, BBE are excited to make the magic of Paz available to a new generation of fans.

More of a cultural artifact than an album in the traditional
sense, Osunlade’s ‘Pyrography’ first materialised in
2011, intended to mark the closing chapter in his House
music journey, the start of a new creative phase. Titled
after the ancient artistic practice of burning an image onto
a surface, everything about ‘Pyrography’ implied both
ritual and permanence. A few signed, ultra-limited edition
CD copies of the album were accompanied by a specially
commissioned art book, with original works by highly
regarded Australian artist Scott Marr and a series of
‘oriki’ prayers appearing in print for the first time ever.
In 2017, BBE are proud to team up with the mercurial DJ,
producer and ordained Yoruba priest Osunlade to make
this incredible work of art available on vinyl for the first
time. Two heavyweight 12” records nestle in the front and
back covers of a lovingly printed book containing a brief
history of the Yoruba culture, Scott Marr’s evocative
images and those all-important traditional oriki prayers by
Maria Oggun Bemi. Placed at the meeting point of art,
culture, history, music and spirituality, Pyrography
simply cannot be described or compared, much like the
ritual Anagó language the project celebrates.

Packaged with an art book featuring Yoruba language,
prayer and history illustrated with unique pyrography
(images burned onto paper) created by award winning
artist Scott Marr.

There was once a young African princess who embarked on a huge journey in pursuit of her dreams. She arrived at a mystical island covered in clouds where she met a cunning wizard…

Sounds like the beginning of some Disney fantasy but the truth is not so different. The Princess is Sena who came from Accra, Ghana to a festival in the centre of Budapest, Hungary and met a musical wizard by the name of DJ Vadim… that was in 2005. What happened that night was the meeting not only of like minded souls, but the beginning of a future journey into sound and space. First came recordings for Vadim for the Soundcatcher album Talk To Me (2007 BBE) which was much lauded by Gilles Peterson at the time… Which led to a long process of creating an album. Much happened in between. Each had many of their own adventures.

Grammy Award shows, sell out arena shows for Sena’s band in Hungary - Irie Mafia - plus the birth of her beautiful daughter Kekeli and the release of her second solo album Lots Of Trees on French Soulbeats Records; world wide shenanagins for DJ Vadim with his groups, One Self, The Electric and many solo projects…

Perhaps a good analogy would be the perfect pasta. One needs both to cook it exactly, not too hard or too soft and also a complimentary sauce. It takes time, love, effort and good ingredients. What’s the result, simple but delicious and what a perfect combination Sena & Vadim make also. Perhaps add some chile pepper to bring out the African funk mixed with London tricknology from the grimey east London hoods and that’s what it sounds like. It’s not just soul but has a peppery kick, a proud African roar with somewhat a Caribbean touch. Then again, that’s the Dubcatcher Vadim bringing his bass and skank to the mix. This isn’t rose tinted squeaky clean US R&B, this is a diamond in the ruff worldly spoken words, raps and emotions… Think Erykah Badu meets Damian Marley over the new upsetter hot steppa

Trailblazing UK jazz renegade, saxophonist Sean Khan delivers his scintillating new album ‘Supreme Love: a Journey Through Coltrane’ on BBE Music. “Who is John Coltrane for me?” asks Khan. “He is man, legend, myth, storyteller, sage and atmosphere. My road and journey has been a rocky one, and like most on this journey, I have carved a path full of mistakes and triumphs. However, throughout my life Coltrane’s music has been a constant.” Weaving together disparate strands of the UK music scene (jazz, dance, broken beat and electronic) together onto one record, Supreme Love is presented in three parts: autobiography, homage and encyclopaedia. A pioneer of the Broken Beat movement early in the new millennium, working with Omar, Bugz in the Attic and 4hero among others, Khan enlisted the input of two old friends, Kaidi Tatham and Daz I Kue, who each contribute a future-minded yet reverential sense of originality to the album. Also featured on Supreme Love are two legends of UK jazz, Peter King and Jim Mullen, both of whom bring a rich and palpable sense of history to the project. Guitarist Jim Mullen has played with Brian Auger, toured with the Average White Band and recorded with Terry Callier over his long career. Mullen was also a regular fixture at Ronnie Scott’s, as was saxophonist Peter King, who actually performed at the club’s opening night, as well as working with two of Coltrane’s favourite drummers, Philly Joe Jones and Elvin Jones. Sadly Peter King’s contribution to ‘Supreme Love’ would be his last recording session, and he passed away in August 2020. Also featured among a talented and diverse group of performers on the album is Cinematic Orchestra front-woman Heidi Vogel, who adds her distinctive, soulful voice to Khan’s, and Coltrane’s, heartfelt lyrics. “I have always been a strange prisoner to my ambition” says Sean “and most of my recordings bear testimony to this, with this record being the next part of that evolution. I made a conscious effort to represent all of Coltrane's main artistic periods from hard bop (with Miles Davis), to sheets of sound (Giant Steps, Moments Notice), spiritual jazz (Love Supreme) and finally his last, most experimental and cosmic period (Interstellar Space). I have never heard a record that attempts to reflect all of the great man’s epochs in this way and use the recording artist’s autobiography (my own) as a conduit to these ends, and so here I am, for better or for worse.”

Originally released in 1980 on short-lived Oregon label ‘Match Box Recordings’ and unearthed for BBE Music by The Mighty Zaf, ‘Burnin’’ is the only album recorded by Portland jazz/funk band Carl Smith And The Natural Gas Company. At the time of the release of this album, Carl Smith’s band had already been performing for almost two decades, starting out as the ‘Carl Smith Orchestra’ in 1959, fusing 40s and 50s big band styles with rock’n’roll, before gradually morphing into the more compact jazz / funk influenced outfit you can hear on Burnin’. "Carl had this bright red delivery van he bought from the natural gas company. He got a hold of that thing and that’s how we went on the road. When we’d roll up to the gig they’d see this big van full of musicians and on the outside it said “Natural Gas Co.” Then out comes Carl Smith and it’s all over." - Lee Bradford (trumpet, flugelhorn) The orchestra that Carl Smith founded was a Portland institution for about 50 years all-told, becoming an essential training ground for young musicians on the come-up; even the later Grammy-award winning trumpeter Chris Botti passed through at the age of 17 and Jefferson Airplane’s Signe Anderson was a long-time collaborator. It was “hard to find many jazz players around here who haven’t played with the band” said Smith in a 1980 interview with The Oregonian. They performed at festivals, universities, nightclubs, dance studios and even military bases from Portland to Seattle and everywhere in between, opening for Dave Brubeck, Buddy Miles and Johnny Ray among many others. The story of this album's recording has gone down in infamy among the remaining band members and Carl Smith's daughter Carlee (who performed lead vocals on ‘Love Won’t Let Me Go’), all of whom recall a fraught, rushed recording process, led by a producer who had no musical experience and was nothing more than a puppet for the somewhat shady label owners. This led to the album being cut too fast and accidentally pitched up a key, so if you want to hear it as the band intended, pull the pitch control down a little on your turntable. "Turns out the whole thing was backed by a bunch of farmers from central Oregon who were looking to take a loss… So here we were playing out and selling records. As soon as we were about to hit one thousand copies sold, their plan was to stop promotion so it would die...but we didn’t know that." - Peter Piazza (trombone, electric violin, euphonium).

Even given the caliber of those involved in this special session, the results are simply exceptional.Featuring live strings by The Apple Hill String Quartet arranged by Adams and Burgess, Vega’s ‘Boogie Mix’ stays faithful to the Universal Robot Band original, with potent vocal performances and a tough new groove for 2019.It was at the string recording session for the boogie version that Louie Vega unveiled his 'NYC House Mix' to the assembled musicians, at which point he and Leroy Burgess quickly arranged a brand new horn section and re-wrote the song’s melody to compliment the track’s accelerated pace. Neroli record founder Volcov returns with the second
volume of compilation series ‘From The Archive’ on
BBE Music.
It’s been a busy two years for Enrico Crivellaro
(Volcov) since the release of ‘From The Archive Vol.
1’. His Neroli label has seen stellar releases from
Dego (2000 Black), Lars Bartkuhn, Trinidadian Deep
and Alton Miller among others, leading to a hectic
schedule of DJ sets across the globe.
In ‘From The Archive Vol. 2’, Volcov’s musical roots
are once again evident in a jazzy collection of hidden
gems spanning genres and continents. As Volcov
puts it: “the spirit and the sound of this album
follows the frst volume: choosing more songs that i
thought were overlooked and deserved more
attention. This time, with such a crowded
marketplace for reissues and compilation of 70s-80s
music, I decided only to focus on songs from the last
10-15 years.”
‘From The Archive Vol. 2’ features several tracks
never before released on vinyl, including ‘Afterlife
Vol.2’ by 'Black Renaissance' composer and Roy
Ayers collaborator Harry Whitaker and Ron Trent’s
homage to French violin genius Jean-Luc Ponty, ‘Ori
Space’. Taking in intimate downtempo soul,
extraterrestrial jazz sounds and straight up club
music, ‘From The Archive Vol. 2’ paints a vibrant and
eclectic musical picture, autographed with a couple
of signature edits by Volcov himself.

Compiled by Zaf Chowdry also responsible for Suss'd amazing 'P&P' and 'Deep Disco Culture' series. Co-compiled with music enthusiast and broadcaster Mark Taylor. A great genre of music given an arguably absurd title. A collecton of predominately white singer/songwriters from America's west coast influenced by African-americans R & B artists as much as soft rock, country, disco and jazz.

Back in the early 1990s house music was having perhaps its most fertile and creative period. The original house from Chicago had blown up back in the ‘80s and left nothing short of a cultural revolution in its wake, with regional variants springing up all over the US, the UK and Europe.
London in particular was a global hub for house music, with a whole slew of clubs and a long established underground scene that had taken house to its heart. A key mover-and- shaker was a young Jeremy Newall, who worked successively at a whole bunch of record stores including Catch-A-Groove, where the likes of Tony Humphries would come and hang out when in town (Humphries used to record his shows at a flat above the shop with a wide-eyed Jeremy soaking in the vibes), and latterly Release The Groove, where he could be found well into the twenty-first century. A close association with Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson saw him repping for the big fella when Trouble was unable to do his Kiss FM radio show, and as the resident alongside him at Trouble’s much loved Loft Sessions in Camden. He also played on many pirates, at all the best parties in London, Europe and beyond. Jeremy’s position as the go-to guy behind the capital’s hippest record store counters saw many visiting US jocks passing him records that barely saw the light of day in a scene where superb new tunes were coming thick and fast. Therein lie the roots of this compilation … a collection of overlooked, unreleased, and just hard-to-find gems to put alongside some of the better-known and overplayed classics of the era.
