The first in a brand new 7" vinyl series from Soul Clap's Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein.
Featuring the hard to find ‘DC Nu-Vox Dub’ version of Derrick Carter’s classic track
Squaredancing.. Better known to most of one half of Boston duo ‘Soul Clap’, Eli "Bamboozle" Goldstein
presents the first 7” vinyl release in his brand new ‘House On 45’ series for BBE Music.
Featuring the much sought-after ‘DC Nu-Vox Dub’ version of Derrick Carter’s Squaredancing
on the A-Side and George Alexander & Big John Whitfield's cover version of Joe Smooth's
'Promised Land' on the flip, this record is simply a must-have for house music connoisseurs
everywhere.
Says Eli: “I’ve been collecting 45s for about 10 years, but didn’t start playing them until our DJ
Kicks tour with Wolf+Lamb in 2011. Obviously I’m never going to have the deepest funk, soul,
or disco 45 crates (I’ll leave that to OG’s like Danny Krivit or Kenny Dope), so as I got more
serious about collecting and playing 7” records, I realised that I could have my own angle by
really focusing on collecting and playing House On 45.”
In contrast to DJ Spinna and Kai Alcé’s ‘Foundations’ 7” series on BBE, which focusses on
house classics previously unavailable on the format, the aim of Eli’s ‘House On 45’ is to shine
a light on modern house tracks that have only ever been released on 45. Some of tracks are
originals, some are covers and some are special mixes that have only been available on 7”
vinyl, many in such limited quantity as to render them impossible to find for all but the lucky
few.
Eli sums up: “45s are perfect for my DJ style. I get bored playing more than three minutes of
a track and with 45s you always have to keep it moving, know your records, and be ready
with the next one. You can cover so many styles in one record bag that you can throw over
your shoulder. There’s also tons of music only available on 45, usually limited pressings, so
when you find something special you feel like you’ve been let in on a secret.”

BBE Music unearths ‘Palaver’, a long-lost, previously unreleased 1980 album from Ghanaian guitarist and songwriter Ebo Taylor.

If Fela Kuti was the king of Nigerian Afrobeat, then Ebo Taylor, 83 and still playing hard, is the king of Ghana Funky-Highlife. No doubt whatsoever. Much of Ebo’s beautiful 70s and 80s output has been reissued, as more and more Afro music lovers are being converted to his unique pan-West African sound.

In 1980 while on a club tour of Nigeria with his regular touring band, Ebo bumped into Chief Tabansi of Tabansi Records. They agreed that Taylor would record a one-album session to be released exclusively on Tabansi. Within a few days the deal was signed, the session completed, the tapes signed off, and Ebo and his band went on their way to complete their Nigerian tour.

But for reasons that no-one (including Ebo) can now fully recall, the master tapes got shelved in a dusty backroom in Tabansi’s Onitsha HQ. Where they remained, undisturbed, unreleased, unplayed, for almost forty years.

Last year, Peter Adarkwah of BBE Music signed off on a major multi-album reissue deal with Tabansi and its affiliated labels. ‘What about unissued material, if we find any?’ Joe Tabansi, Chief’s son and current administrator of the label, casually asked.

Yes, replied Peter- but WHAT unissued material?

Upon which, Joe produces these masters. The tapes are rushed to the redoubtable Carvery vinyl remastering and pressing plant in East London, and all at BBE soon realised that they had a masterpiece on their hands. All-new material, all Ebo’s own compositions, all recorded with Ebo’s crème-de-la-crème touring and recording players, including George Amissah. Mat Hammond, George Kennedy and George Abunuah among others.

Here it is, for the first time, anywhere. Ebo Taylor’s Lost Nigeria Sessions.

In the late Congolese musician Lumingu Zorro, protégé of Kinshasa’s legendary 60s band leader Dr Nico, recorded Mosese, his only pre-2000 solo album, for the Tabansi label- and this is it.CHAMPETA STORM WARNING! The first-ever reissue of one of West Africa’s best-kept rumba-soukous secrets- as well as being one of the most in-demand titles on Colombia’s booming Champeta sound system scene, where a rare record is protected as fiercely as on the Northern Soul or Jamaican sound system scenes, the label scratched off, the record hidden from view when not on the turntable.Possibly one of the strongest and most consistent Congo dancefloor albums ever recorded perfectly balanced between voices, horns, guitars and percussion.Which is why original copies of this all-time rumba rarity almost never reach the open market, being traded between Colombia’s champeta picoteros (sound system selectors) instead. In Kinshasa they say ‘Miziki ezelaki eleng ndeko’- ‘Sweet music, brother!’. BBE Music is delighted to present the first ever reissue of ‘Disco Soccer’, the 1979 album from Ghanaian sportsman turned musician Alhaji Sidiku Buari.Originally an athlete, winning silver and gold medals in the Senegal All Africa Games and West African Games in 1963 and a bronze in the All African in Congo Brazzaville in 1965, Buari moved to America on a music scholarship from The York Institute, obtained as a result of his athletic achievements. Buari soon became enthused by baseball, training with the York team and occasionally playing in matches. When one of York’s music teachers heard him singing inspirational team-builder songs and chants for his side - in the Ga language- he suggested putting a rhythm section behind the songs, recording them, and seeing what the American record buying public thought of them.It won’t surprise you to hear that said Americans loved the demos- so, in 1975, he recorded his first album – the first of fifteen. Buari went on to collaborate with Bernard Purdie, Sugar Hill’s Steve Jerome and Salsoul’s bassman, Gordon Edwards.A switch to Polydor in 1979 produced Disco Soccer, and if you’re into disco or boogie or any hybrid thereof, this is a must-have album. A homage, Ay to Zee, to New York’s late 70s disco scene, filtered through an Accra late-night haze: Ga vocals and West African percussion all the way, all of it composed and produced by the artist himself. A generous eleven tracks of all killer-no-filler boogie business: one of those albums you just put on, and leave on.An essential partner to BBE’s double Buari LP Feelings/Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters, Disco Soccer is reissued from the original masters and reproduced on 180-gram vinyl with new liner notes and original artwork

London production hero and DJ Simbad (aka SMBD) joins forces with BBE Music for retrospective album ‘Collections Vol.1’.Despite having produced a stellar series of remixes for the label over the years, ‘Collections Vol.1’ is Simbad’s debut on BBE as an artist, so he’s brought a few friends along for the ride. The album features guest vocals from Lulu James, LaAerial, Steelo, Entek, Byron The Aquarius, Rae Rae, Claudia Smith and Miryam Solomon, all deftly framed by Simbad’s distinctive, warm, jazz-infused production.Although a constant traveller, Simbad’s affinity with the UK, and in particular London, has placed him at the centre of the city’s music scene for many years now; with influences and inspirations flowing in both directions between him and his adopted hometown.Says Simbad: “I came to London end of the 90's with my saxophone for a summer & ended up staying. This is the place where my music journey as a DJ & a producer truly began. The culture of this island hit me hard & deep. And because most of the stuff I've done is still unreleased (and I never stop making music where ever I go) I am absolutely delighted to share this collection of tunes featuring some of the most talented singers (and friends for life) that I had the pleasure to work in these last 10-15 years, recorded in my London studio sanctuary throughout the years. And hopefully even the old songs still stand the ground...

Following the sell-out success of our landmark compilation, J Jazz: deep modern jazz from Japan 1969-1984, BBE Music is thrilled to present another exploration into the very finest Japanese modern jazz.J Jazz 2 builds on the solid foundation of the first compilation and sees co-compilers Tony Higgins and Mike Peden once again pick choice sections from their own record collections. They present a deep dive into an intoxicating and beguiling range of styles: from cinematic roaring big-band (Little G by Nobuo Hara) and sparse minimal acoustic funk (Teru-Teru Bozo by Teru Sakamoto), to deep spiritual modal epics (Dragon Dance by Makoto Terashita and Harold Land) and funk fusion (Mother of the Future by Electro Keyboard Orchestra). J Jazz 2 delivers more astonishing high quality jazz that will appeal the old school hard-core jazz head as much as those digging the current sounds of the current vibrant jazz explosion in the UK and USA.The specially chosen tracks on J Jazz volume two span across 25 years of Japanese musical progression and invention. From the elegiac stark beauty of Serenade to a Dimly Lit Street and the modal vortex of Daguri, to the fierce post-bop freedom of Bull Trout and the mid-tempo bossa lilt of Vietnam, there is enough here to satisfy the most curious and demanding jazz fan seeking something extra special. ‘The highlife hep cat of Nigerian jazz trumpet’. Thus spake Louis Armstrong upon hearing
Zeal Onyia’s inimitable tone, rhythm and sheer breath-power. One of the founders of West
African highlife in both Ghana and Nigeria, Zeal played Ellington-style swing and dance with
Bobby Benson in the 40s, classic highlife with ET Mensah in the 50s and provided stiff
competition for Fela Kuti’s first band as a small-jazz combo leader in the early 60s. After
studying classical music in Germany for most of the 70s, he returned triumphantly to Lagos
in 1979, where he promptly recorded these six memorable tunes with the Tabansi Studio
Band. From the village-party vibe of ‘Zeal Anata’ to the instrumental workout ‘Egwu Olili’,
every one of the tracks is a winner. This LP remains one of the most in-demand old-school
Igbo-highlife sessions of all time, both in Nigeria and elsewhere, the original vinyl being
devilishly hard to find in ANY condition, let alone playable! As part of its ongoing Tabansi
Gold reissue series, BBE Music brings you the first ever reissue of this historic record, from
the original source, on heavyweight vinyl, complete with original sleeve artwork.
In Nigeria, the Igbo people call this style ‘Agadi-Akwukwo’- ‘old-school’. And they have as
much love and respect for it today as they did all those decades ago.
