Out Of The Fog EP
12" | 2016 | EU | Original (Love Pain Sunshine & Rain)
9,99 €*
Release:2016 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Continuing a sublime run of form for the label, the fourth outing on the Lopasura imprint, is yet another classy trio of heady, analogue machine laden masterpieces. Opening up with “Out of the Fog’, the familiar acidic arpeggio and crisp hits we’ve grown to love from Benedikt Frey, dance unwittingly along before being opened up by long, cinematic pads drenching the track with an emotion and grandeur so synonymous with his music.Complimenting the A side, the looming intent ‘Wolves’ adopts from the off evolves quickly into a driving, hypnotic and beautifully crafted piece that’s a true heads down, eyes-shut techno battle weapon.Rounding off the EP on the B side is the exceptional ‘Lights’. An unsettling, caliginous whir of industrial drones balances the tribal, percussive elements almost depicting a lost ship crashing over the swells of the ocean as it clings on to futile hope of finding the lighthouse. It meanders and threatens before an incredible synth hook ebbs in and takes over momentarily, before calmly simmering as the storm passes. Never before has Love Pain Sunshine and Rain been more perfectly encompassed.

The Lobbyist

Release:2016 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Benedikt Frey crafts a musical aesthetic that (much like the ESP Institute) might only be seen in its true form from a birds-eye view—a whole greater than the sum of its parts. His playful indifference to genre specifics and pre-prescribed instrumentation or production techniques makes for a loose and refreshing collection of work, and this debut for the ESP Institute, The Lobbyist, serves up an incongruous three tracks so bewildering and narcotic we’re alreadyimpatiently fiending for more. On side A, the title track is no less than a medieval assault. Led by a stomping war drum and a blasting bass synth that might literally have caught the studio on fire, an erratic array of clanking percussion, hi-hats and cymbals push us into a sinister corner where his whispering chant grants us the smallest bit of humanity before continuing with the beating. On side B, Cupids Delight (ft TCB) and Gravel both explore variations on beauty—the former in a blur of ghost-like vocals smeared in harmony across a low-slung machine drums, and the latter evoking a tropical affair gone psychedelic, complete with drawn-out disorienting marimba and ritual clave/tom arrangements. Welcome home brother Benedikt, what took you so long?
Benedikt Frey - Ghosts

Genre:Electronic / Dance
It is German producer Benedikt Frey who is next up on Dutch label Creme Organization with a fully formed four track EP entitled Ghosts. In just three years, Frey has established himself on quality labels like Live At Robert Johnson and Mule, as well as on his own Label Love Pain Sunshine & Rain, and each of those releases has summonsed up a different vibe, from kinky techno to moody deep house, but always with a truly unique melody, hook or texture somewhere in the groove. 'Can't Joke With Dexy' is the opener here and is a bumpy, edgy house cut with tense and nervy keys jangling above a roughshod drum line. It grows ever more dark and comic and things roll on before 'Faith' is a more breezy, airy house groove. The drums here dance a nimble dance, thin synths and emotive chords all come in rich layers and a lo-fi percussive line proves how Frey can conjure up idiosyncratic sounds with ease. Like its title suggest, 'Ghosts' is a hauntingly atmospheric track with icy hi hats, pixel thing and hugely melancholic chords and harmonic bells all adding a sense of calm and serenity to turbulent drums deep down below. Lastly, 'Scale' is a sub 100bpm crawler with fat elastic synths strung up between lazy kicks. Two filtered spoken word lines add plenty of weirdness to this soupy bit of cosmic seduction and round out an EP that is stuffed with fresh ideas and great sonic invention.
