In this life there are two kinds of people, those riding the vapor trail left behind by Matt Valentine (aka MV) and those left woefully unprepared to deal with navigating his slide out of the ether. MVP, or Matt Valentine Preserves is the viscous adhesive that's draws all of MV's eras together. Recorded, casked, and cured over the past eight years and brushed upon by those who orbit MV's mist (Samara Lubelski, Mick Flower, J. Mascis, P.G. Six, Willie Lane, Erika Elder, Anthony Pasquarosa, Ryan Jewell, Coot Moon, and Spanish Wolfman) the record is a potent elixir that feels like it was siphoned wholesale from the fever dream of a sleeping child god. Tuned to the subconscious airwaves of miasmic melt, the record stews its eight tracks together into a set of space-blues that inhale and exhale with the cosmos. The quicksilver runs, mercurial blues sweats, and spectral drone drops find their way back to us. This is a midnight mass at the temple of time.

Jeffrey Alexander has always been into the cool, the weird, and the darkness. He has apparently been heavily dabbling in what the bands bio describes as the higher dimensions of cosmic free-rock since I last hung out with him. I consider him a kind of scholar of outsider and avant-garde music; over the years, hes run Secret Eye Records, been a member of Jackie O Motherfucker, Black Forest Black Sea, and managed to find a way to always remain genuinely excited about creating and performing musicwhich is not always the case with artists who keep at it for multiple decades.Recorded in Oakland, CA during a two day stretch, "Grow Towards the Light" is Dire Wolves 4th official full-length album (not including the fifteen or so minor releases, bootlegs, and tapes theyve put out over the years), and its the first without Lau Nau on main vocals. Taking over that role is the mystical Georgia Carbone, singing in her own invented language. Regarding the album title: you can really hear the sun pulsating through the space clouds, if you know what I mean. Jeffrey plays guitar and moog here, joined by Brian Lucas on bass, Sheila Bosco (from Faun Fables) on drums and piano, Arjun Mendiratta (Village of Spaces) on violin, and Taralie Peterson (Spires that in the Sunset Rise) on saxophone.Every Step Is Birth features a dark, plodding groove. It sounds like the soundtrack to a sinister after-party in a place you suspect might actually be purgatory. I happen to know that Jeffrey Alexander followed the Dead around for the better part of the 1980s, and you can hear that influence here, but also shades of musical styles from all over the globe. Every Step, with its shrieking violin and Georgias haunting vocals, builds into a trance-like, cinematic climax. All of this becomes all the more impressive when you realize that every note of this recording was improvised.Jeffrey tells me the album thematically tries to express the interconnectedness of all things, which makes perfect sense given even during some of the more unsettling jams and eerie melodies, this album always feels like a cohesive whole.Stylistically this is really a broad, painterly album that comes together in a beautiful, unexpected way. I hope you enjoy "Grow Towards the Light." - Marissa Nadler, March 2019

TENGGER is a traveling musical family, made up of Pan-Asian couple, itta and Marqido, who create their brand of psychedelic New-Age drone magic through the use of harmonium, voice, and toy instruments (played by itta) and analogue synths (played by Marqido). TENGGER means unlimited expanse of sky in Mongolian and also means huge sea in Hungarian. You'll hear all of that in their music. Travel, as spiritual experience in real environments, and the sound between the space and the audience have been central themes of their works. Fans of Cluster, Laraaji, Emerald, and Neu! will find lots to love in the music of TENGGER.The cover art is from Mt. Ishizuchi in Shikoku, Japan. Ishizuchi is a symbolic, holy mountain. There is an old shrine near the top and theres a small mirror at the shrine which reveals the peak of the Ishizuchi. Beyond Beyond is Beyond is honored to be the mirror for you to reflect the beauty, strength, and power of TENGGERs brand-new masterwork, Spiritual 2.

Release:2018 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Our Solar System's third full-length via Beyond Beyond is Beyond is perhaps their most transparent and revealing, unobstructed by anything beyond the group's now-masterful commitment to eclipsing the expected. On "Origins," the music is at once rapturous, intense and mysterious. The opening half of Side A ("Vulkanen") offers an almost animal assessment of the power possessed by Our Solar System. With considerable ambience the opening suite finds its balance in a land with similar topographic features to that explored by Cluster, Harmonia or "Fly United"-era Amon Duul II (and with no skimping on the flute here, either). Side B is the slightly more serene of "Origins" offerings, though not a gram less compelling.

LP | 2016 | US | Original (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond)

Release:2016 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Less than a year after the release of “Holy Water Pool” – Heaters’ debut, a crushing, revelatory psycho-surf-rock anointment-as-album – there are no apparent signs of distress to the engine that powers this Michigan-made vehicle of sound. To the contrary, Heaters are operating at a higher horsepower than ever before, as evidenced by this new LP. “Baptistina” glimmers to a greater degree than anything Heaters have previously unleashed, a full-spectrum sheen that shines across the full panorama of righteous reverb riots. Heaters are in full control of their machine from the opening, looped-lunacy of “Centennial” to the final crash of “Seafoam,” forty-six minutes later – and yet the result of this increase in control can be heard as a willingness to crash their ship completely. But have faith in the pilots – Heaters are living for the next ride. “Centennial” rides the wave effortlessly, setting the tone for the album in full, hovering in the atmosphere above strutting, Bolan-blasts of riff-rock-lift-off perfection before letting the edges drift and blur, exploring the gravitational pull of less solid ground. Taking the first three songs of “Baptistina” – “Centennial,” “Ara Pacis” and “Orbs” – together is to take the sacrament of a singing, searing psych-rock sinfonia, an expertly-constructed breed of amplified surrealism, framed by the tight corners and unmistakable electric glory of what was once known as rock and roll. It doesn’t matter thatHeaters are not trying to answer the musical question, “What if Grand Funk Railroad got really into Flying Saucer Attack?”; what matters is that the answer is there for the taking. The album’s centerpiece may very well be “Garden Eater,” a perfectly prepared prescription of the relentless sonic schizophrenia in which Heaters deal so effectively. At nearly eight and a half minutes, it’s about twice as long as anything that appeared on “Holy Water Pool,” giving ample room for the band to spread their sound into broad, bold new dimensions – hypnotic, Hawkwind-hued chanting harmonies, anyone? – without ever detaching from the very root of their sound. It’s perhaps no surprise that the following track, playfully named “Dali,” would be a throbbing reminder of the persistence of memory, given its Silver Apples-esque flavor precedes the perfectly placed flower-power-pop of “Mango.” The final three tracks of “Baptistina” recall the superb symmetry of the album’s opening trio, an undeniable triptych of pace, power and persona, garage-rock gurus emerging from thin air, spent snares and a dramatic lack of cares. On “Baptistina,” Heaters don’t sound weirder than before – they simply are. - Ryan Muldoon

Welcome to the sound of Garcia Peoples at full speed. Without losing a ray of sunshine or a drop of dew, "One Step Behind" is the first major statement by the malleable Brooklyn sextet. The 32-minute title cut highlights the twin guitars and songwriting of Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki and, instead of pointing itself towards one possible future for the band, just zaps itself square into the thick of it. Encompassing a range of moods and scenes in one flowing arc (plus a coda), it's less a piece of music to listen to than it is a zone to occupy, a portal for all open-eared heads. The band's third album in a year-and-a-half, "One Step Behind" is unquestionably their boldest yet. Whether or not you thought you knew Garcia Peoples' music, "One Step Behind" is something new and beautiful, for new heads and old. No matter where you stand--behind, beyond, or another plane altogether--"One Step Behind" is ready. For those about to get on the Bus, we salute you.

Prana Crafter's Beyond Beyond is Beyond debut is an electric woods walk. "Bodhi Cheetahs Choice" rambles, soars and flows through a heavy fog of psychedelia. The music of Prana Crafter is most easily tagged acid folk but such a reduction misses the electronic and avant influences, the boggy atmospheres and synthesized meditations. Like the forests that creator William Sol roams in rural Washington state, Prana Crafters music is both familiar and ever-changing. Without pledging devotion to any one, Sol invokes great spirits of the past with acoustic and electric guitars, synths, and hand drums. Not so much an album as it is a channeling, "Bodhi Cheetahs Choice" needs to be heard by the third ear

Natural Fact
LP | 2019 | US | Original (Beyond Beyond Is Beyond)

Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
The second album in less than a year from those lovable New Jersey moptops with the sweet twin guitars, "Natural Facts" provides a portal to the carefree place that both indie rock and jam bands forgot. Bolstering the summer glow of 2018s "Cosmic Cash" with flashes of fuzz, teeth and power, "Natural Facts" is the more driving counterpart to its rural predecessor. Danny Arakaki & Tom Malachs guitars remain at centerstage on machine gun shreds like the album-opening Feel So Great & the rolling grooves like High Noon Violence (which would fit right in with one of David Crosbys early 70s supergroups). Tracked in Philly with Jeff Zeigler, "Natural Facts" is a newly emerging conversation, songs & structures drawing from the most right-on musicians to cross Garcia Peeps collective transom. Classic rock guitarists of yore might be obvious touchstones but bend your ear and newer colors emerge, generated from hours & years of talk & music. Nothing inorganic here, just pure Natural Facts

Heaters are back, with their fourth LP in as many years! The evolution of Heaters over 4 years has been a thrill to hear, from the original sonic maelstrom of three young men to a seasoned 4-piece unit totally finding its groove and its voice the further it ventures on. ts also true that Heaters have grown exactly 4 years over that time, which is quite substantial when youre talking about dudes in their twenties. Many of the songs have an overarching theme addressing the march of time and getting older, and valuing peace as much as chaos, the yin and yang that is life; something that comes through in the overall sound, too. You have never heard a Heaters quite as balanced as on Suspended Youth; balancing their whirlwind sonic rave-ups with steady motorik lock-ins. Lush guitars and beautiful harmonic vocals, out in the forefront this time around, to dizzying effect. This is the sound of a band aging gracefully, growing artistically, and on their own terms.

Hasta La Victoria comes just one year after Entranced Earth, and serves as its perfect companion piece. And yet, not a moment of the albums thirty-seven minutes ever feels even remotely rushed, or anything short of natural. Indeed, in the best possible way, Hasta La Victoria sounds like The Myrrors couldnt be doing anything else. Perhaps its not the victory in the albums title that focuses the bands attention perhaps its the until. Throughout Hasta La Victoria, the band sounds utterly propelled by an invisible force, by the indelible impression that their actions as a band, as artists, as people have an impact, and that impact should continue until victory. Be here now or be here later, theres little doubt that The Myrrors will be continuing to walk the path when you get here.

"Mean Green" is the A-side track of the band's new 7" single, presenting a surf-centric slab of sonic stomp that doubles as a definition of "mean." In the case of Heaters, "mean" is meant in the context that might be used to describe a 1970 GTO piloted by a
jittery Warren Oates - not belligerent, but aggressive, blank-eyes staring at the horizon, fueled by dread & ready to accelerate into the nearest dangerous curve. The flipside of the single, "Levitate Thigh," proves the band to be possessed by the power of rock & roll, initially bringing the tempo to a stuttering slow-roll, before Heaters are once again the willing captives of a Seeds-level web of sounds, guitar snarl, feedback & drums creating the trap in which the band has no chance - & no desire - to escape.

Prince Rupert's Drops reflect, refract & reemerge in the form of "Climbing Light," their dark & brilliant 2nd full length album; 42 minutes featuring 8 songs of frighteningly unforgettable form. It's a monumental, multi-hued musical death-trip that they have delivered. Generous moments of beauty, earth-worn balladry, bombastic beats, sing along choruses, it's all here.
