Afro and Rock: now that’s a pretty good combination any day of the week chez LoveLee but in the masterful hands of John Cameron (founder of ace Brit Prog outfit CCS, composer of the cult sound tracks to Kes and Psycomania, and musical arranger for the likes of Donovan, Hot Chocolate, Heatwave and David Essex) and Alan Parker (erm, he wrote the theme to Angels. Note to Alan – ask John who made his website for him) the juxtaposition of these two words kicks up a boat load more breaks and funky atmospherics than can safely be navigated up the Zambezi, with or without Audrey Hepburn A quick word of warning; if you’re the kind of crate digger who’s heart misses a beat at phrases like “repetitive forceful riffs” and “aggressive Afro rhythms” you had better pre-book an ambulance before slipping this baby in to your compact disc player and dealing with the ensuing onslaught of nasty wah wah guitars, fiery conga work outs, heavy harps (really), spacey electric piano, far out flutes and lots and lots of drums. Tim “Love” Lee.

Analog Africa's 9th release of their Limited Edition Serie. A fantastic dancefloor, summer cocktail of Highlife, Funk and synths in a 4 Track-LP from the ghanaian bandleader Gyedu-Blay Ambolley.Prepare yourself for new directions in Afro-funk. During the 1980s, ghanaian bandleader Gyedu-Blay Ambolley began to experiment with electronic instruments, and the result was a potent cocktail of highlife, funk, exploratory synths and righteous vocals, the sound of a restless genius intent on pushing the traditional sounds of highlife into a brave new future. On July 20 Analog Africa will release a album containing four of Ambolley’s hardest-driving excursions to the outer limits of eighties funk. By the end of the 1970s, Ambolley was already a legendary figure on the ghanaian music scene. A drummer, turned guitarist, turned bassist, turned lead vocalist, he rose to prominence during the late 1960s, serving with countryman Ebo Taylor in the Stargazers and the Uhuru Dance Band before launching his own career with ‘Simigwa-do’, the 1972 hit that propelled him to West African stardom. As a founding member of the Apagya Show Band and the Complex Soundz, he stretched the boundaries of highlife with electric instruments, funky rhythms and socially charged lyrics in Fante and English. If he had retired in 1978, Ambolley’s place in the history of ghanaian music would have been secure. Instead, he dissolved the Complex Soundz and embraced the synthesizer. With a new band, Zantoda Mak III, he recorded ‘The Message’, a seven minute funk workout built on a highlife foundation, and decorated with shimmering synths. Recorded in 1980, the song became a hit that would change the direction of Ambolley’s music: over the next decade, electronic instruments played a much larger role in his sonic experiments. ‘The Message’ receives a long overdue re-release on this album along with three other peaks from Ambolley’s eighties output. The futuristic funk of ‘Akoko Ba’ strips down the rhythm, raises the intensity of the vocals, and adds a dose of serpentine saxophone. On the B-side, ‘Simigwa Soca’ sets classic highlife horns against an unshakable bass groove, while the incredible ‘Burkina Faso’ is Ghana’s great lost electro-funk gem, a sleek construction of robotic bass, call-and-response vocals, and fat stabs of slippery synth. Difficult, if not impossible to find for decades, Analog Africa is proud to make Gyedu-Blay Ambolley’s extraordinary eighties recordings available to a wider audience.

Recorded in a shaky makeshift chicken shack in rural Maryland, Link Wray’s eponymous 1971 solo album is a compelling and forward-looking piece of honest, handmade Americana. This album is vastly different from his previous work, foregoing instrumentals entirely. Instead, Wray, left with only one lung following a bout with tuberculosis in 1956, gives us his raw voice, full of spit and vinegar, as he blends elements of country, rock ‘n’ roll, roots, folk and gospel marked with fuzzy guitar and booming percussion. He kicks off with a track, “La De Da”, that may be the greatest song the Stones never wrote. Elsewhere, the single “Fallin’ Rain” channels Dylan at his most political, with lyrics about “stabbings and shootings and young men dying all around.” Link Wray proved to be the only album that the guitarist issued in his own name to hit the American charts during his nearly 50-year recording career. Although it didn’t receive much critical acclaim at the time of its release, Link Wray has seen a resurgence in recent years and developed a cult following, with artists from Nick Cave to The Neville Brothers recording versions of its tracks.Link Wray’s musical journey began early, with his father Fred taking up the family music business. Link, along with brothers Vernon and Doug began playing together professionally in 1942, their rowdy instrumental single “Rumble” charting at number 16 in 1958. Following a string of hits on Philadelphia-based Swan Records, Vernon began to serve as the family’s producer, eventually starting his own studio; first in the basement of his home and then–after his wife Evelyn complained about the noise–in a converted shack on the property. It was there that Link, Vernon and producer Steve Verroca found a sound that marked “a return to simplicity.” This carefully remastered reissue will take you right back to that chicken shack, and to sessions so electric you can almost feel the atmosphere. This is the first reissue of this classic album.

Following stints with Modern and Chess, legendary blues man John Lee Hooker joined forces with the esteemed Vee-Jay label out of Chicago in 1955. For the next 7 years Hooker cut some of the most explosive and legendary blues sides of his career and solidified his position as one of the greatest performers of the electric blues era. By the 1960s the folk and blues revival would make international stars of many blues performers but at the time of these Vee-Jay recordings this was music made by African-Americans mostly for the African-American market, from Chicago to the South to Los Angeles and New York and points between, and Vee-Jay was one of the first and most successful African-American owned record labels. While many of his earlier sides featured only Hooker on guitar and vocals, his Vee-Jay sides feature a full rocking rhythm section. Essential sides from one of the all-time greatest American performers of the 20th century. This second volumes spans the years 1959-1962 and includes classics like “Boom Boom”, “Want Ad Blues”, and 16 more great Hooker blues joints.

Lightnin' (The Blues Of Lightnin' Hopkins) was originally released in 1960. Featuring, as usual, his brilliant acoustic guitar work, Hopkins is accompanied here by a low key rhythm section of acoustic bass and mostly brushed drumming. The results of this minimal sound is some of the purest and most engaging blues music of the early 1960s. Though Hopkins had been recording blues and R&B for labels like Modern and Aladdin for over a decade, it was not until the folk revival firmly implanted itself into America's psyche that he crossed over to a larger audience. This is one of Hopkins earliest albums following his breakout onto the national stage and it's one of his finest performances of all-time.

Ivory Coast isn’t known for country music. But Jess Sah Bi & Peter One’s 1985 recording Our Garden Needs Its Flowers, a massive-selling regional hit, brought a burgeoning interest in folk and Americana into the mainstream and carried two young men to international prominence, culminating in stadium-filling concerts and performances for the first lady of Cote d’Ivoire and dignitaries. The album was made following a chance introduction via Jess’s nephew, who heard Peter playing for fun around his university dormitory. At the time, Jess Sah Bi (Die Sah Bi) was Ivory Coast’s first political cartoonist, having already published in dozens of magazines and newspapers across West Africa and France. Meanwhile Peter One (Pierre-Evrard Tra) was a university student and soon-to-be high school history teacher. Both musicians had spent time singing and playing guitar and composing songs on their own until they came together to record their independently-released opus. The music contrasted starkly with the popular sounds of the time, ranging from fast-paced regional dance music genres to ziglibithy to soukous to straight-up funk played by Abidjan’s plethora of bands. Country music and folk-rock weren’t very popular with the general public. But interest was bubbling up within the growing student population, who connected with the protest sentiments expressed by many English and American artists of the era. “It’s very nice music, with very nice harmonies, and it’s different from what you hear every day,” Peter says. “The language was a big barrier though. You had to learn English to understand the songs, and the students were the ones learning English.” Having access to education along with their awareness of social and political inequality and injustice made students the perfect audience for folk music in Ivory Coast. Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and Don Williams’ music could be heard on some radio programs around Ivory Coast’s major cities, and some younger people were getting hip to Simon & Garfunkel, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cat Stevens and Crosby Stills & Nash. The stage was set for Jess Sah Bi & Peter One’s homegrown country music to make a mark on Ivorians’ consciousness. Complete with slide guitar, soaring vocals and anthemic, politically-conscious lyrics in three languages, the recording became ubiquitous across French-speaking West Africa. “We expected the album to be a big success, but we could not have imagined how far it would go,” Peter says. After Our Garden Needs Its Flowers release, Jess and Peter’s profile lifted rapidly, leading to stadium performances in Togo, Burkina Faso and elsewhere. Their ascent was accompanied by critical acclaim from the local press and television programs, appearances at galas organized by Marie-Thérèse Houphouët-Boigny, the wife of the late Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first president of the Ivory Coast and even a performance during the 1988 ECOWAS (Economic Coalition of West African States) summit in Yamoussoukro at President Houphouët-Boigny’s request. Jess and Peter’s run lasted until the early 1990s, capped off with the BBC using their song African Chant as theme music the day Nelson Mandela was released from prison. Jess and Peter now live in San Francisco and Nashville, respectively, and continue to make music on their own. Plans for shows reuniting the duo are in the works for later this year.

Limited re-issue of 1000 copies only for Record Store Day 2018 of the in-demand 2012 Rag N Bone Man debut vinyl EP!Only one copy per customer!About This EP and Rag'n'Bone Man... Blues music in the UK by nature and substance is an uncharted movement, and one in which you’ve got to dig around to find good contemporary releases. The genre has never fully permeated mainstream music and for a good reason – it has no desire to. The pure, honest rawness that the voice of a blues legend conveys will hit home with anyone who wants to listen carefully enough. Bluestown is one such record, and one that looks set to announce Rag’n’Bone Man on to the UK Blues stage. Also playing a prominent role as singer in hip-hop collective Rum Committee, Rag’n’Bone Man’s vocal talent and exposure has grown among not only those in the know, but also those whose attention he captured thanks to a series of noteworthy performances at a selection of gigs and festivals across the UK over this summer. The Bluestown EP sees him display a full range of talents as a musician capable of turning his hand to both the guitar and harmonica, with equally emotive results. His real forte, and one which is hard to coach, is his ability to evoke the Blues greats through a voice that seems to emanate straight from a tortured soul. This delivery makes you believe in his word within an inch of your life; true salt of the earth. From the moment Rag’n’Bone’s harmonies puncture the ambient backdrop of Die Easy, the listener is instantly transported to a level he is playing on – a sound that holds such tradition and so rare to discover. Visions are brought swiftly to the conscious of a smoke drenched bar, rum in hand. A place where music may not be entertainment but more of a voice and slow tune holding your eager attention, knowing the bartender is close by. That’s not to say that Bluestown is solely blues record – the hip-hop influences that inspired his first direction to write and perform live music are strong and interwoven with Rag’n’Bone’s acoustic ballads. This is never more evident than in his adept delivery of the hook on the mellow Daylight Fading, featuring fellow Rum Committee member Ceezlin. Whether it’s the unplugged High Heeled Sneakers, the more melancholic, beat-driven Bottom of the Bottle or the hard-hitting lyrics and Blues lick of Tell’Em Like It Is, it’s not difficult to see why Rag’n’Bone Man has gained fans across a range of musical genres. A strong and much needed release to open the floodgates of his talent, Bluestown is just the tip of the iceberg. With more albums, live band projects and killer rap hooks in the pipeline, it’s clear that Rag’n’Bone is a man with a tale to tell and no shortage of those wanting a front row seat at the recital.

Beyond the classic sides that were released on 78 rpm at the time, there were numerous unreleased outtakes and alternate recordings that went uncovered for decades after their recording. Collected here are 12 alternate takes including essentials like "Crossroad Blues", Drunken Hearted Man", "Ramblin' On My Mind", and more. The years 1936-1937 were the entirety of Robert Johnson's recording career, when he was only 26 years old. He died a year later, poisoned by a jealous husband. Eighty years later he is known around the world as the author of such standards as "Love In Vain" and "Sweet Home Chicago", and is considered a myth, whose whole repertoire is simply legendary. The influence of Robert Johnson's music still shows on contemporary works, and many of his songs have been since covered - sometimes stolen - by other great artists; Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, and The Rolling Stones, among others. This brilliant collection of his recordings is as good an intro to the blues as anything else in the history of the genre.

The great Chicago bluesman Willie Dixon knew raw talent when he saw it, and he saw it in the 20-year-old southpaw guitarist from Mississippi, Otis Rush. Thanks to Dixon, Rush was soon cutting singles for the Chicago-based Cobra Records, and in 1956 his first single, “I Can’t Quit You Baby”, shot to number 6 on the R&B charts. Over the next two years Rush released a total of eight singles for Cobra (all produced by Dixon), including masterpieces like “Double Trouble” (featuring Ike Turner on guitar), “Keep On Loving Me Baby” and “All Your Love (I Miss Loving)”, inventing Chicago’s West Side blues style (along with Magic Sam and Buddy Guy) along the way. These eight singles, collected here, represent one of the most outstanding moments in Chicago blues.

Mississippi's Son House was already legendary for a small collection of live field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in 1941 and 1942, and for having taught some important licks to both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters before he was rediscovered by a new generation of college-age fans in 1964.The 'Father of the Delta Blues' recorded this namesake LP for Columbia Records a year later in 1965. It's become, in the words of Living Blues magazine — »Essential recordings by one of the greatest bluesmen ever.« And now, Analogue Productions presents a reissue unmatched in sonic quality and luxury presentation. For our version we turned to Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound to remaster the recording from the original master tapes. The freshly cut lacquers were then plated and pressed on 200-gram vinyl by our own Quality Record Pressings.Son was born Eddie James House, Jr., on March 21, 1902, in Riverton, Miss. By the age of 15, he was preaching the gospel in various Baptist churches as the family seemingly wandered from one plantation to the next. He didn't even bother picking up a guitar until he turned 25; to quote House, »I didn't like no guitar when I first heard it; oh gee, I couldn't stand a guy playin' a guitar. I didn't like none of it.« But if his ambivalence to the instrument was obvious, even more obvious was the simple fact that Son hated plantation labor even more and had developed a taste for corn whiskey. After drunkenly launching into a blues at a house frolic in Lyon, Miss., one night and picking up some coin for doing it, the die seemed to be cast; Son House may have been a preacher, but he was part of the blues world now.

New primitive-suburban-folk music from Temple City and Pasadena, CA, circa 1973-4. This new edition is culled from the original unissued Smegma tape vaults of Ju Suk Reet Meate and represents the most pure expression of the insular sound-world that was spontaneously discovered as a group. Unlike last years' "Look'n For Ya" no song forms are ever used, instead fearless group improvisational vocals take you on a strange shape-shifting journey thru operatic show tunes, spirit visions and visits to a delirium motel room. The only exception is the title track "Abacus Incognito" that features poetry by Dennis Duck (also, Human Hands, Dream Syndicate, LAFMS...) with accompaniment by the family stereo console record player/Radio unit and utilizing conventional instruments creating a strangely unique non-jamming sound. Except for the first track, all sounds were recorded casually in various band-members parents' houses while they were away. they would have been horrified! The final track is possibly one of the strangest concepts ever recorded, inspired by both the Lord Dunsany story "The Three Infernal Jokes" and the most popular record of 100 years ago "The O.K. Laughing Record" we have - The Smegma "Laughing to Death Record".

A collection of some of the finest moments of the only two known recording sessions by the King of Delta Blues, Robert Johnson, made in Dallas and San Antonio in 1936 and 1937. A man whose poorly documented life and death at 27 have given rise to much legend in the last 75+ years, Johnson had little or none public recognition for his work in his lifetime. Rumored to have sold his soul at the crossroads to achieve success, Robert Johnson lived his whole life playing at street corners and Saturday night dances, writing the soundtrack for half a century of rock culture to come. Featuring all-time classics such as “Crossroad Blues”, “Love In Vain”, and “Phongraph Blues”, this is mandatory for all early folk and blues aficionados!

Blues legend John Lee Hooker cut countless records beginning with his debut for Modern in 1948 and going some 50+ years until his death in 2001. With such a vast discography it can be easy to lose track of some records andBurning Hell, recorded in Detroit in 1959 with just his guitar and vocals, is one such lost record. But this album deserves so much to be rediscovered, a brilliant set from his "acoustic" period this is raw southern acoustic blues at its best and a truly brilliant collection of songs. Rumble is pleased to bring this lost classic back to light on LP.

Originally released as a 78rpm 10'' shellac in 1950, this now-legendary Chicago blues A-side changed the course of Western Music. This one song's influence has been felt all over the world, not to mention its place as the early, primary inspiration for Mick Jagger and company to launch as The Rolling Stones. Anything that made the Stones engage an entire generation of young people can ultimately be traced back to Muddy Waters and this song is ground zero for the rock-n-roll that blew everyone's minds. Walkin' Blues, the B-side, is a standard 12-bar blues song that kicks off with 4 high-pitched staccato strums of the guitar and riffs on the everyday struggle of getting yourself to walk out the door one more time in the morning. This one's straightforward, stirring and maybe even more relatable in the 21st century.

Antibalas’ new studio album, Where The Gods Are In Peace, is an epic Afro-Western Trilogy searching for solace from American political opportunism, greed and vengeance. Through its battle cry of resistance against exploitation and displacement, ANTIBALAS’ long-form compositions investigate oppression in 1800s America that eerily mirror the current state of the country. Three explosive original arrangements cultivate an urgent call to heal a broken system. Ultimately, the sonic excursion lands on an island where love is our first instinct. A new ideology is born opening our hearts to the possibilities of living as one unified people, where all gods are equal and together we prevail.True to traditional form, Where The Gods Are In Peace pays respect to the forefathers of Afrobeat with compositions spanning nine to 15 minutes in length. With a blessing from the Fela Kuti legacy early in the band’s career, ANTIBALAS has long been revered for re-popularizing the classic Afrobeat sound while adding their distinct New York City grit to the mix. Influences of punk rock, free jazz, and hip-hop seep into their expansive works to define a truly 21st century translation of the Afrobeat genre and beyond.

William Onyeabor wasn’t the only Nigerian experimenting with synthesizers in the 70s and 80s. Goldfinger Doe was twiddling knobs too, no more so than on Let’s Dance Together – a prime slab of cosmic Afro boogie funk, recorded with legendary percussionist, Mike Umoh (a.k.a B.M.S.) Goldfinger met Umoh playing with Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies. Bass player Bashiru Musa, was a fellow Groovie too, and when the three hit the studio to record Let’s Dance Together, the groove was already tight and hot. The title track, ‘Let’s Dance Together’, is an urgent boogie monster, peppered with cosmic synths. ‘Funky Africa’ is an irresistible floor-filler, driven by the ‘funk in the black soil and the soul in the air.’ ‘Jah Help Us’ is a reggae-tinged reworking of the Lord’s Prayer, with added squelchy synth. ‘B.M.S. Bowl’? It’s just an excuse for Umoh to show off his preposterous percussive skills. Goldfinger’s extraordinary synth skills are always front and centre. They transform ‘Jane’, providing a humorous commentary in an otherwise straightforward romantic lament, and propel the funkier tracks to become the heartbeat of the album. Let’s Dance Together is an Afro Funk space ship, fuelled up and ready to take off. - Peter Moore

The 1970s in Nigeria were an age when mighty bands walked the earth. In Lagos, afro-rock stalwarts such as BLO and Monomono ruled the roost, eastwards, it was deeply funky groups like The Funkees, The Apostles and The Friimen. Up north you had soulful ensembles such as The Elcados and The Moonrakers. And in the southeast, you had Foundars 15.Foundars 15 were not the only rock band operating in the southern city of Port Harcourt, but they were without question the tightest and most eclectic not just in Port Harcourt but perhaps in Nigeria as a whole. Formed initially as an army band in the wake of the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970, Foundars 15 released a string of singles in the early seventies, followed by four albums of heavy, jittery funk-rock between 1976 and 1978 before splitting up to pursue solo careers.1977’s Fire Woman is perhaps the finest (and rarest) of Foundars 15’s albums, offering a spicy buffet of groovy pop, reggae, native rock and dense, off-kilter funk. Long sought after by aficionados, Fire Woman has been an LP that is more often heard about than actually heard. That is about to change.Comb & Razor Sound is proud to present a new, fully-authorized reissue of Fire Woman, featuring eight crucial cuts representing the gold standard of the golden age of Nigerian pop music. Here’s your chance to catch the fire!

Having almost single-handedly resurrected the blues movement via his Hendrix-esque guitar work, powerful vocals and perfectly crafted songs, the trials and tribulations of Stevie Ray Vaughan are well documented. Despite his premature passing, recordings such as the one included on this LP help to keep the Stevie Ray Vaughan flame alive. Taken from a radio broadcast aired by WMMR FM, of a show performed at the Mann Music Centre in Philadelphia on 30th June 1987, this set clearly demonstrates why the legend of Stevie Ray and Double Trouble has been so enduring. Touring seven months after the release of his then last album, Live Alive - a live album which Vaughan himself was admittedly dissatisfied with due to its poor recording, lacklustre playing and countless overdubs – this show finds the band on absolute top form. In addition, this is almost certainly the finest quality live audio recording available by this quite extraordinary performer.

We've now taken the extra step and done 45rpm versions of these three standout LPs.We've used the original 30 inches-per-second, half-inch analog master tapes for all of these albums. Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound cut the lacquers for the LPs using the ultimate VMS 80 cutting lathe. Gary Salstrom handled the plating and the vinyl was pressed of course at our Quality Record Pressings, maker of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Stevie Ray Vaughan's 1983 debut album, "Texas Flood", was a phenomenal success, climbing into the Top 40 and spending over half a year on the charts, which was practically unheard of for a blues recording. The record plays like a dynamite club show, filled with crowd-pleasing originals and covers, all performed with unbridled enthusiasm. "Texas Flood" was certified gold on August 13, 1990, and certified platinum on January 22, 1992.There's not a link in this production chain that wasn't absolute first-rate. The absolute best that money can buy.But beyond that we've poured our passion into this project. Acoustic Sounds is a big fan of the blues and Stevie Ray Vaughan. It's a big dream come true to work on this project and to make these records sound and look the best they ever have.

Featuring covers of Sonny Boy Williamson, Chester Burnett, Memphis Slim, Willie Dixon, and more, this is the greatest recorded example of the Japanese obsession with American blues music. The band would record several more albums and then come back as, simply, Creation, but nothing reached the sheer blues rock heights of their debut.

“Super Super Blues Band” started out merely as “Super Blues”, a conglomerate of blues pillars Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Little Walter. When Little Walter bowed out and was replaced by Howlin’ Wolf, they rightfully threw another Super on the name, and went on to release this burning, irreverent and even sometimes hilarious set of drunken, wild-eyed electric blues. Long form jams roll on in a trance as the trio of blues legends flex egos, talking shit to each other, trading off leads and ducking blasts of unexpected wah-wah guitar lines. Songs are peppered with an incredible level of banter between the trio of bandleaders that predicts the call and response sing- talking of early hip hop, laced with random screams in the background that teeter between celebration and danger. That these three ever got into the same room together is a miracle, and that they produced something so intense, energetic and weird is another almost unbelievable feat. The record is special enough as a stand-alone document of this meeting/melting of the minds before you find out the backing band consists of Hubert Sumlin, Otis Spann and freaking Buddy Guy. Lordy. Might have needed one more “super” in there. The record is pressed on limited colored vinyl.
