Release:2019 / US – Original

GA-20 was formed by friends Pat Faherty and Matthew Stubbs in Boston, MA in 2018. The project was born out of their mutual love of heavy traditional Blues, R&B, and Rock & Roll of the late 50s and early 60s. Faherty and Stubbs bonded over legendary artists like Lazy Lester, J.B. Lenoir, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Junior Wells. Feeling a void in current music, the duo have set out to write, record and perform a modern version of this beloved art form. Live, GA-20 is a trio of 2 guitars, vocals and drums. Raw, passionate and honest performance, both on stage and in the studio, is the only goal. "Lonely Soul", the title track to their debut album embodies their sound: raw, cutting, and authentic.

Guitarist and singer-songwriter Nils Lofgren in 1997 released a small treasure for longtime fans. "Acoustic Live" captures Lofgren alone in front of an appreciative audience, knocking out such favorites as "You", "No Mercy" and "Keith Don't Go", plus six new songs. Even with the new songs, there are no real revelations, only a selection of little gems that will put a smile on your face as you listen.
Yes, this is a digital recording. True to our company principles, Analogue Productions in almost all cases reissues recordings only where the analog master tape is available. However, there are rare exceptions that whether digitally recorded or otherwise, a recording is so outstanding it's worthy of the highest quality vinyl reissue.
Now with Analogue Production's 45 RPM release, the best-sounding version of this classic double album gives listeners an even richer sonic experience. The dead-quiet 4LP set, with the music spread over four sides of vinyl, reduces distortion and high frequency loss as the wider-spaced grooves let your stereo cartridge track more accurately.
Along with his work as a solo artist, Lofgren has marked more than 25 years as a member of Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band as well as a former member of Crazy Horse and Grin. Lofgren joined Neil Young's band in 1968 at age 17, playing piano on the album "After The Gold Rush". Lofgren would maintain a close musical relationship with Young, appearing on his "Tonight's The Night" album and tour among others. He was also briefly a member of Crazy Horse, appearing on their 1971 LP and contributing songs to their catalogue. From '71 to '74 Lofgren was active in Grin, the band he founded in '69. Solo albums and tours followed every year through the 1970s as Lofgren established himself as a top guitarist and live performer earning the respect and acclaim of his peers. Bruce Springsteen made the call in 1984 and Lofgren joined the E-Street Band for the "Born In The USA" tour. Lofgren was an instant hit with Springsteens fans through his playing and vibrant on stage persona. Lofgren remains a stalwart of the E-Street Band to the present day.
»"Acoustic Live" is an interesting and charming album from Nils Lofgren in 1997 as he follow on in the Unplugged tradition that became popular in the 1990s. It was actually recorded at The Barns Of Wolftrap, Vienna in Virginia on January 18th, 1997.« — bestlivealbums.com

On this double set Mr. Slowhand teams up with the almighty southern rocker in an a torrential series of blues jam. All the efforts have been captured at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida, on a hot summer day on the 27th of August, 1970. On this date the sound engineer (Tom Dowd) just left the tapes rollin’ all night. Clapton was just hanging around in the studio after recording with Derek and the Dominos the influential Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs, Duane just added five notes to the classic track “Layla” and here our story begins. A meeting of exceptional minds.

Blues legend Muddy Waters, born McKinley Morganfield in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, was a sharecropper/tractor driver, and a local blues guitarist when in 1941-42 fate intervened. The Library of Congress had started its systematic series of field recordings of American traditional music and on a 1941 recording trip through the Delta, led by Alan Lomax and John Work III, they came upon the 26-year-old Muddy, recorded him at his home with a small accompanying combo (guitar, mandolin and violin), and made music history.
Muddy had played harmonica since his early childhood, and learned guitar in his teenage years; his primary musical influence was Son House. A year later in 1942, Lomax made his second trip through the Delta recording the remainder of the tracks, including more of Muddy's songs. The following year, at age 28, Muddy moved to Chicago and a blues legend was born. Muddy Waters would go on to win six Grammy Awards and become an incalculable influence on not just the blues, but rock ‘n' roll.
Analogue Productions is honored to present "The Complete Plantation Recordings" as a newly mastered 33 1/3 200-gram LP reissue. This numbered, deluxe edition, pressed at Quality Record Pressings, is limited to 1,000 copies. The songs presented represent everything listed by the Library of Congress as recorded by Muddy Waters during these historic sessions.
For this reissue the original metal disc recordings created by Lomax were the source for a high-res 192kHz digital file used by Sterling Sound's Ryan K. Smith to master this edition.
»The file was made from the original parts; it's the highest quality of these recordings that's ever been released,« Chad Kassem, owner of Analogue Productions and Quality Record Pressings, says.
In addition to the flat and impeccably silent 200-gram 2LPs pressed at QRP in this limited edition set, we've seen to it that the packaging is exemplary. The highest-quality Stoughton Printing gatefold jacket is wrapped in a linen cover, evoking the linen cover of the five-album set released by the Library of Congress initially in 1942 as "Folk Music of the United States Album IV — Afro American Blues and Game Songs", where some of these tracks by Muddy first appeared.
The recorders of the time were cumbersome. Weighing as much as 350 pounds, they were piles of iron, wire and steel — plus two batteries weighing 75 pounds each — and a microphone. Magnetic tape had yet to be utilized; the machines recorded onto scores of blank aluminum and celluloid discs.
Both Lomax and Work's voices can be heard on the recordings conducting portions of interviews with Muddy. »I was the editor of the first five-album set, and my opinion of Muddy was so good that we included TWO of his songs,« Lomax said later. »I couldn't make up my mind which of his two blues were best, so we put them both in.«

For over half a century, Takehisa Kosugi was of the most unique and enduring figures in the Japanese underground. As an art student in Tokyo in the early 1960s, he joined the Fluxus-styled performance unit Hi Re Centre and then founded the improvisational ensemble Group Ongaku, but his most legendary project was The Taj Mahal Travellers – a multicellular organism that included Kosugi, Ryo Koike, Yukio Tsuchiya, Seiji Nagai, Michihiro Kimura, Tokio Hasegawa and sound engineer Kinji Hayashi.

With a penchant for long psychedelic jams (some lasting 12 hours or more) The Taj-Mahal Travelers lived up to their name. Touring in a Volkswagen van across Europe and Asia in the early '70s, they eventually reached the actual Taj Mahal in India. Upon their return to Japan, they held a concert to raise more touring funds and released their very first recordings. Their debut album, July 15, 1972, would extend the band's matter-of-fact titling: all the tracks were named precisely for the times they began and ended.

With a grab bag of instrumentation (electric violin, double bass, santoor, vibraphone, harmonica, radio oscillators, sheet iron, etc.), The Taj Mahal Travellers weave together mesmerizing waves of sonic texture. Featuring longtone concepts that Kosugi discovered while working with sound generators in New York in the mid-'60s, July 15, 1972 remains just as much a collective tone poem as psych workout. These leader-less sounds coalesce into a unified whole that feels both subconscious and sublime, as if the waveforms bypass the listener's ears and land directly inside one's synapses.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is often referred to as "the godmother of rock and roll" for her pioneering guitar technique, use of distortion/reverb, and a 1963 UK tour with Muddy Waters that has been cited as a huge influence by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Jeff Beck. Though she reached more widespread notoriety across the world in the '50s and '60s thanks to the folk/blues revival and her beloved status among UK blues and rock musicians, it's her early recordings from the late '30s and early-mid '40s that are the most brilliant, visceral, and emotional of her career. This excellent collection compiles 18 of those amazing gospel and R&B sides into one place. Essential.

Blues pianist Eddie Boyd’s 7936 South Rhodes was recorded in London
in January 1968 with three members of the early line-up of Fleetwood Mac:
Peter Green (guitar), John McVie (bass), and Mick Fleetwood (drums). It’s a
tantalizing setting for Boyd’s straight up Chicago piano Blues, going heavier on
the slow-to-mid-tempo numbers than the high-spirited ones.
During the Sixties’ Blues revival, Boyd toured Europe with Buddy Guy’s band,
and he toured and recorded with Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall and the
Bluesbreakers. Tired of the racial discrimination he experienced in the United
States, he first moved to Belgium where he recorded with Dutch Blues band
Cuby & The Blizzards. Boyd died in 1994 in Helsinki, Finland, just a few months
before Eric Clapton released the chart-topping blues album, From The Cradle
that included Boyd’s “Five Long Years” and “Third Degree”.

Originally recorded as the sequel to Muddy Waters' and Willie Dixon's 1954 hit Hootchie Cootchie Man and simultaneously as the response to Bo Diddley's 1955 groover I'm A Man, the A-side Manish Boy itself has since become a blues standard, covered by anyone from Erykah Badu to The Band. This song is a staple in the Chicago blues subgenre and also served as a particularly important inspiration for loads of young British musicians, leading up to what would become the British Invasion of the 1960s.

Notably, this is the only recording not featuring frequent collaborator Little Walter on harmonica (but was one of the few recordings with Junior Wells) during what was arguably Waters' most fruitful creative period for single blues hits. The swelling, adoring screams of women during the chorus makes this the ideal version. The B-side Young Fashioned Ways was written by friend and bandmate Willie Dixon and is another essential collaboration between the two pillars of the Chicago blues scene. Great title too!

Feted as the “Gateway to the South” and situated just above the Mississippi Delta’s cotton-growing zone, Memphis has a long, rich history of blues music, its strategic location rendering it a longstanding centre for the mingling of rural and urban blues styles. The city was thus a very fitting home for the Memphis Blues Festival of 1969 that gave rise to this incredible double live album. Most of the tracks are provided by bluesmen based in Memphis and its environs, such as country blues giant Bukka White, crying blues legend Sleepy John Estes, barrelhouse pianist Memphis Piano Red, electric banjo specialist Nathan Beauregard, country blues great Mississippi Fred McDowell (here collaborating with harmonica player Johnny Woods), singer and fife player Napoleon Strickland with the Como Drum Band and Delta blues man Furry Lewis; credited under the unlikely pseudonyms of RL Watson and Josiah Jones are none other than experimental folk pioneer John Fahey and steel guitarist Bill Barth, the latter a co-founder of the Memphis Country Blues Society.

Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers are releasing their popular 2018 holiday release, the Christmas Swing on VINYL on November 8, 2019.
Erin Harpe has been called one of the most dynamic, talented and exciting roots rocking blues women on the scene by Living Blues Magazine. Erin Harpe & the Delta Swingers, her Boston Music Award-winning band, released their first ever holiday album, THE CHRISTMAS SWING, on their own Juicy Juju label, through the VizzTone Label Group in 2018. Following up their acclaimed 2017 sophomore album, BIG ROAD, the new holiday album is a fun seasonal romp chock full of hooky blues-guitar-fueled gems that you ll want to listen to each year as the holidays approach.
CHRISTMAS SWING features ten songs ' including Erin s own arrangements of traditionals and songs by Chuck Berry, Bessie Smith, Lightnin Hopkins, Leadbelly, Bo Carter, and a UK band Erin discovered called Lil Lost Lou. Title track The Christmas Swing is a re-working of their 2014 hit The Delta Swing, co-penned with special guest Richard Rosenblatt (who also lends harmonica). Building on her last album, Erin s guitar playing shines as she plays a number of different styles, ranging from acoustic fingerstyle on Bessie Smith s At the Christmas Ball (a duet with pianist John Juxo), to the raw electric guitar on Lightnin Hopkins Merry Christmas , to the early rock n roll licks of Chuck Berry s Run Run Rudolph. Her well-known kazoo also makes an appearance on the Smith tune and the (not really holiday-themed, but festive) Bo Carter number Drink and Get Drunk , as well as on closer Auld Lang Syne.
The record features Erin Harpe on electric, slide and acoustic guitars and vocals, as well kazoo and percussion; Jim Countryman on bass, claps, and snaps; Matt Charles Prozialeck on harmonicas; and Chris Anzalone (Roomful of Blues) on drums and percussion. With special guests John Juxo on piano and Richard Rosenblatt on harmonica. We had a lot of fun making this album. It s a holiday album for music fans that don t necessarily like Christmas music, declares Erin, it s just good music, that will make your holidays more fun! Whether you celebrate Christmas, or just like holiday music, Erin guarantees fans will love this non-traditional take on Christmas music!

Another Music for Children / 1974-1985
In the land of Presidents Giscard and Mitterand, thermal clothing and elbow pads, Sautet films and Sunday roasts, the carpeting of a nursery is strewn with a handful of 7-inches. There, exotic birds and courteous elephants guarding a castle built with cakes form a Front for the Liberation of the Imaginary: colourful, systematically framed illustrations standing out against the cream background of gatefold sleeves… doorways to a maze of sounds at the crossroads between the neatest form of chanson and the most prospective jazz.
Founded in the course of the 1970s by Philippe Gavardin, the small collection named Chevance is above all the story of buddies who were out and about between the twilight of the Trente Glorieuses and the disenchantment that followed the socialists’ rise to power, gravitating around this mentor known for his kindness and curiosity. Originally a linguist, Gavardin was one of these open-minded intellectuals, with one foot in the Contrescarpe cabarets and the other in step with the avant-garde, combining his apparently classical tastes with a keen interest in the novelties of his time. It is notably with Jean-Louis Méchali—a drummer from the free jazz scene who became Gavardin’s team-mate and arranged a good deal of the releases—that he forged the identity of this series of recordings for the younger generations: musically janus-faced, definitely literary, impregnated with a surrealism that echoed the decade’s psychedelic and libertarian experiments. The label developed a real editorial policy disregarding commercial constraints. Each record took a clear direction: modern fables, bestiaries, musical tales, cookbooks… Words were the backbone and every release was both carefully designed and perfectly manufactured.
Several teams were built up in the course of meetings which were more like congenial brainstormings. In the chanson category, Anne and Gilles, a duet regularly performing in the left bank area, alternated with the Swiss actress Cristine Combe who had recently settled in Paris and wanted to sing Kurt Weill. As for the folk projects, Imbert and Moreau, who were more in the hippie vein, took turns with the canonical pioneer Steve Waring, whose famous Grenouilles were then turning round and round in José Arthur’s Pop Club. The musicians included many a jazzman from some of the most adventurous factions of the French scene: Méchali’s fellow travellers involved in the Cohelmec Ensemble; The Marvelous Band, a gang from Lyon that had also co-founded the “Association à la Recherche d’un Folklore Imaginaire” (Association in Search of an Imaginary Folklore); and various mavericks like multi-instrumentalist Teddy Lasry, or the intriguing, so often credited Jacques Cassard, whose track seems to have been completely lost today.
Initially distributed by the label Le Chant du Monde, Chevance was definitely included in the catalogue of this venerable parent company when Gavardin started directing it. Thus, it joined a selection of traditional music and work songs also including chanson, poetry and recordings that just can’t be categorised. While bookshops for kids knew a historic boom in France, the collection eventually enjoyed the monopoly of the prizes awarded by “Loisirs Jeunes” or the Charles Cros Academy, a key factor to reach school and library networks.
If the collection gives a striking change from mass-produced music for kids, its spirit is nevertheless akin to other singular attempts that were made at the time.
Mixing songwriting and avant-garde jazz, Chevance seems to be, first of all, Saravah’s younger sibling. Founded by Pierre Barouh, Saravah showed the same balance between moderation and radicalism, with oddities like those of Brigitte Fontaine, Alfred Panou, Barney Willen and so many other musicians feeding the creative frenzy that characterised the French jazz scene.1 As the Cohelmec Ensemble bridged the two worlds, the teams got to know one another and often worked in the same studios.
As for the literary dimension, it is right in the lineage of the American iconoclastic publisher Harlin Quist, whose activity in France left its mark on the genre. Similar selections, a common taste for playful uses of language, and the same distancing from both conventional and outcome-based education… A universe excluding the mundane to make room for cosmogonic visions in which, at the turn of each page, everyday life is relentlessly assaulted by the incongruous. The parallelism with Chevance goes even beyond questions of editorial, graphical or typographical choices: the two worked with the same team of illustrators, which included Henri Galeron, Nicole Claveloux and Patrick Couratin.
While Chevance had strong literary roots, Le Chant du Monde developed, in the middle of the 1980s, another collection in a more abstract, rigorously instrumental line, far from textual concerns.
Initiated by Anne H. Bustarret, a critic, a major activist in the field of creation for kids and a friend of Gavardin’s, Sonoriage openly campaigned for ”an active initiation to the listening and reading of today’s music based on the attention to every day sonic environments.” Inspired by the many situations she experienced in workshops and the hundreds of hours she spent stirring the imagination of children with a bunch of keys hanging at the end of a string, Bustarret carefully presented each record, systematically adding an illustrated, notebook-like insert to guide the kids’ listening.
Bernard Baschet—the sound sculptor who invented, along with his brother François, the “crystal” bearing their name, and worked with Pierre Schaeffer on the typology of sound objects for the Treatise on Musical Objects—was an old friend of Anne Bustarret’s. She therefore naturally turned to him for the Musiques de table project, before he oriented her towards Jean-François Gaël. A cornerstone of the amazingly hybrid band Sonorhc, a student of acousmatics and a first-class arranger who had worked for many of the decade’s singers, Gaël was a crystal lover who followed Baschet around his interventions, including in schools.
When Gaël set to work, Bustarret called the composer Alain Savouret, asking him to select excerpts from his tape-recorded Sonate Baroque, so as to compile another volume entitled Musiques en Bande. Renaud Gagneux, who was in charge of the Louvre’s carillon, had just been ringing his bells for Musiques sur la place when she contacted the outsider naturalist Knud Viktor about a project which, unfortunately, was never carried out.
As a rather up-to-date though not-so-commercially-successful collection, Sonoriage constitutes a kind of ideal illustration of François Delalande’s theories.2 This very serious member of the GRM also worked as a research supervisor at the National Audiovisual Institute. His theories emphasised the unexpected parallelism between the methods of the most respectable practitioners of concrete music and the way the youngest children explore their sonic environment.
Necessarily incomplete and subjective, this very partial overview deliberately draws attention to the most peculiar tracks. Unfortunately, some equally valuable works could not be included: Jean-Louis Méchali and François Ruy-Vidal’s Petit Poucet (a monolithic musical tale that cannot be sized down), Colette Magny’s rough and raucous lullabies, B-sides from the Antifables series, La Promenade de Picasso, a record that had to be destroyed and therefore seems definitely lost… May the most curious listeners feel like putting these fragments back in their broader context so as to (re)discover the vast inheritance this uncommon project bequeathed us.

It's that time again. The skies are calling and its time to board our trusty jet for the 5th outing of Africa Seven's premiere class compilation Africa Airways. For volume 5 its time to brace yourselves for 10 slices of Afro boogie goodness.

We up the boogie time groove with The Black Bells Group (the first band of lead singer Sidney 'Patrick Duteil' who went on to become the godfather of French hip-hop and a well know TV presenter. Here the groove is swinging... the perfect opener. Next up is German-based Cameroonian musician and cousin of Manu Dibango, Charly Kingson with this bass-synth boogie stomper. Big brass and jazzy trumpets add layers of sparkle too.

Next its time for some highlife inspired boogie from Ghanian Gyedu Blay Amboley. Highlife fused with reggae, disco, boogie and jazz just as the lyrics say.

Next we pair up with Africa Seven friend Eko once more under his Dikalo guise. The Cameroonian master musician is on fine form with his heavy brass and deep percussion with a driving afro boogie groove. To round off Side A its off to Cameroon again to groove with Jean 'Mekongo President'. Think Bernard 'Chic' Edwards on the bass with some African style and you can see it's the bottom end groove and afrobeat drums that power this gem along.

We open the second side slowly and purposefully with the highly sought after 'French Girl' from Fotso. Drippy bass synth grooves and a wondrous percussion and drum shuffle pair with piano riffs to make this a unique sounding track. Our friend Tala AM is next with the foot-stomping 'Sugar Lump'. JK Mandengue is next with most definitely the catchiest chorus you will hear today. Nigerian Jide Obe gets synth and clavinet rich with his doe to sensible dating advice 'Too Young'. We close off the album with a track from label good friend Jo Bisso under his Mulamba guise. Sounding like a long lost TV theme from a late night TV show circa 1977. Let's get down and boogie with the brand new dance in town folks... the Dashiki.

Until Volume Six takes flight it is time to unbuckle those seat belts folks.

Recorded in 1963 at the peak of the folk revival, Muddy Waters entered the studio to record an all-acoustic set. Known for his distinctive electric blues style this recording was definitely a departure for Waters, but the results are historically great. A beautiful album from start to finish, featuring the great Buddy Guy on guitar, and Willie Dixon on bass (he also produced the album), this has come to be known as one of Waters' best albums. A great piece of acoustic blues from one of the legends of the genre.

A bit of an anomaly in the B.B. King catalog, this 1962 LP is all instrumental tracks in the guitar driven pop-blues style of early Freddie King. Originally released on Crown - which was part of the RPM/Modern/Kent umbrella that B.B. King had recorded for since nearly the beginning of his career 10+ years before - this is a collection that was aimed at the burgeoning white market for R&B and blues and is therefore a little more pop-oriented than previous releases but that lends a charm to these recordings not often found on other King releases. Killer R&B/blues instrumentals from one of the greatest guitarists of the 20th Century.

Recorded at Sam Phillips’ Memphis Recording Service at the recommendation of Ike Turner in July 1951, this incredibly influential single is the first ever 7'' from legendary bluesman Howlin’ Wolf. Interestingly enough, the A-side ''How Many More Years'' was cited by T. Bone Burnett as ''in some ways...the first rock and roll song''. The single was later referenced by British blues pioneers Led Zeppelin, both in the title and in Plant’s vocals, on their debut album track ''How Many More Years.'' The B-side ''Moaning at Midnight'' is as heavy as it gets, described by Phillips as ''the most different record I ever heard.''

A mostly upbeat selection that will certainly help you and yours get through these fraught times.

Blues stars like B.B. King and Lowell Fulsom, with their ripping up-beat guitars join forces with the mellower mistletoe sounds of Hadda Brooks and Jesse Belvin.

This positive view of seasonal goodwill was probably down to the fact that all these sides were cut in Los Angeles in the warm California sun.

kauderwelschender Mann mit Baskenmütze die Szene und brüllt "Woobedoowop, do the Camel Twist!" in ein
schmutziges Mikrofon. Dazu Lo-Fi-Effekte. Go-Go-Mädchen in Leopardenfetzen winden sich zu einem

Furry Lewis was a Mississippi native who found his first success in Memphis in the 1920s, recording now highly sought after sides for labels like Vocalion and Victor. Throughout the Depression and WWII Lewis maintained his day job as a street sweeper for the City of Memphis, a job he kept for over 40 years, even after the folk revival hit and he began performing and recording again. This album, originally released in 1961, is one of his earliest revival efforts and remains one of his strongest recordings to date. Featuring his unique country blues guitar style and soulful voice, this is a forgotten gem from a blues legend that deserves to be named with the greats like Patton, Johnson, Hopkins, and Hooker.

Lightnin' (The Blues Of Lightnin' Hopkins) was originally released in 1960. Featuring, as usual, his brilliant acoustic guitar work, Hopkins is accompanied here by a low key rhythm section of acoustic bass and mostly brushed drumming. The results of this minimal sound is some of the purest and most engaging blues music of the early 1960s. Though Hopkins had been recording blues and R&B for labels like Modern and Aladdin for over a decade, it was not until the folk revival firmly implanted itself into America's psyche that he crossed over to a larger audience. This is one of Hopkins earliest albums following his breakout onto the national stage and it's one of his finest performances of all-time.

A Record Of It" im Jahr 2013. Aber während sein vorheriges
Material im ewigen Inneren zu wohnen schien, lebt ,MITH" sehr
viel in unserer Welt - die von Beton und Tränen, von Schmutz
und Blut, von Ungerechtigkeit und Hoffnung. Dies ist ein
wütendes Album, ein ausnehmendes Album, ein viszerales Album
- aber letztendlich wieder ein Album der Hoffnung.

Ivory Coast isn’t known for country music. But Jess Sah Bi & Peter One’s 1985 recording Our Garden Needs Its Flowers, a massive-selling regional hit, brought a burgeoning interest in folk and Americana into the mainstream and carried two young men to international prominence, culminating in stadium-filling concerts and performances for the first lady of Cote d’Ivoire and dignitaries.

The album was made following a chance introduction via Jess’s nephew, who heard Peter playing for fun around his university dormitory. At the time, Jess Sah Bi (Die Sah Bi) was Ivory Coast’s first political cartoonist, having already published in dozens of magazines and newspapers across West Africa and France. Meanwhile Peter One (Pierre-Evrard Tra) was a university student and soon-to-be high school history teacher. Both musicians had spent time singing and playing guitar and composing songs on their own until they came together to record their independently-released opus.

The music contrasted starkly with the popular sounds of the time, ranging from fast-paced regional dance music genres to ziglibithy to soukous to straight-up funk played by Abidjan’s plethora of bands. Country music and folk-rock weren’t very popular with the general public. But interest was bubbling up within the growing student population, who connected with the protest sentiments expressed by many English and American artists of the era. “It’s very nice music, with very nice harmonies, and it’s different from what you hear every day,” Peter says. “The language was a big barrier though. You had to learn English to understand the songs, and the students were the ones learning English.” Having access to education along with their awareness of social and political inequality and injustice made students the perfect audience for folk music in Ivory Coast.

Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and Don Williams’ music could be heard on some radio programs around Ivory Coast’s major cities, and some younger people were getting hip to Simon & Garfunkel, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cat Stevens and Crosby Stills & Nash. The stage was set for Jess Sah Bi & Peter One’s homegrown country music to make a mark on Ivorians’ consciousness. Complete with slide guitar, soaring vocals and anthemic, politically-conscious lyrics in three languages, the recording became ubiquitous across French-speaking West Africa. “We expected the album to be a big success, but we could not have imagined how far it would go,” Peter says.

After Our Garden Needs Its Flowers release, Jess and Peter’s profile lifted rapidly, leading to stadium performances in Togo, Burkina Faso and elsewhere. Their ascent was accompanied by critical acclaim from the local press and television programs, appearances at galas organized by Marie-Thérèse Houphouët-Boigny, the wife of the late Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first president of the Ivory Coast and even a performance during the 1988 ECOWAS (Economic Coalition of West African States) summit in Yamoussoukro at President Houphouët-Boigny’s request. Jess and Peter’s run lasted until the early 1990s, capped off with the BBC using their song African Chant as theme music the day Nelson Mandela was released from prison.

Jess and Peter now live in San Francisco and Nashville, respectively, and continue to make music on their own. Plans for shows reuniting the duo are in the works for later this year.

Electric Mud, which Chess originally released in 1968 has not seen a legitimate domestic vinyl release since 2002, despite its enormous influence on generations of blues rockers. It features members of Rotary Connection as Muddy's backing band and was very controversial upon its release for its fusion of electric blues with psychedelic elements. The album is now recognized as a forward-thinking classic, sampled extensively by artists like The Black Keys and Gorillaz.

Heaven sent from Nigeria’s tumultuous east, The Apostles have been preaching a particular blend of funky psychedelic soul/rock fusion for over forty years. On Banko Woman they threw a little Afrobeat into the mix, creating an Afro-Funk disco bomb that has been energising dance floors ever since. The title track finds the band at the height of their powers. Stung by the acclaim Felix ‘Feladay’ Odey got for the searing guitar lead on ‘Never Too Late’, Walton Arungwa is a man possessed, trading licks with keyboardist Benjamin Nnamdi Davidson and sounding all the world like a Nigerian Carlos Santana. The players in the rhythm section, Henry Asu Tandu, Chicago Nwoha and Harrison Mba, are tight and relentless, keeping their heads so everyone else can lose theirs. Of course, you don’t stay successful as long as The Apostles without giving the audience what they want. On Banko Woman, that’s a country song for mum and dad (‘Mr Too Know’) and a couple of earnest, plaintive tracks for emotional challenged chaps to dedicate to their girlfriends (‘Yours Sincerely’ and ‘Friend Today, Enemy Tomorrow’). You also finish on a high. ‘Disciple Funk’, is almost a religious experience, an 8-minute long instrumental wig that will have you flipping the record back to side one and starting all over again. - Peter Moore

Antibalas’ new studio album, Where The Gods Are In Peace, is an epic Afro-Western Trilogy searching for solace from American political opportunism, greed and vengeance. Through its battle cry of resistance against exploitation and displacement, ANTIBALAS’ long-form compositions investigate oppression in 1800s America that eerily mirror the current state of the country. Three explosive original arrangements cultivate an urgent call to heal a broken system. Ultimately, the sonic excursion lands on an island where love is our first instinct. A new ideology is born opening our hearts to the possibilities of living as one unified people, where all gods are equal and together we prevail.

True to traditional form, Where The Gods Are In Peace pays respect to the forefathers of Afrobeat with compositions spanning nine to 15 minutes in length. With a blessing from the Fela Kuti legacy early in the band’s career, ANTIBALAS has long been revered for re-popularizing the classic Afrobeat sound while adding their distinct New York City grit to the mix. Influences of punk rock, free jazz, and hip-hop seep into their expansive works to define a truly 21st century translation of the Afrobeat genre and beyond.

Blind Faith Records is proud to unveil one of blues music’s true hidden gems, Caron ‘Sugaray’ Rayford. At 6’5,” Sugaray is a vocal giant in every sense, but on stage he moves with pure grace and energy. His music has even been endorsed by the legendary Brian Wilson, who could hear the star quality in this undiscovered jewel. Somehow, to most people, he has managed to slip through the net, but not any more. Italian soul ambassador Luca Sapio made it his mission to bring Sugaray’s music to the forefront and tracked him down to record his latest album, ‘The World That We Live In.' It was recorded in Luca’s analogue studio in Italy, with racks of vintage gear and a killer house band. What they have so magically created is an album which sounds like an instant classic.

When Sugaray belts out a song, you not only hear it, you feel it. The excitement in the room is palpable when he takes to the stage; his dynamic voice is large just like the man and stands up to comparisons with all-time greats of soul, blues and old-school R&B such as Solomon Burke, Muddy Waters, Otis Redding and Teddy Pendergrass.

Texas-born Sugaray began his musical career at the tender age of seven, singing and playing drums in church, and his gospel influences definitely shine through in his music. The soulful gravel in his voice hints at his first-hand experience with hardship, and a childhood marked by poverty and loss.

With the help of Blind Faith Records, Sugaray is focused on presenting his latest project, ‘The World That We Live In,' a collection of ten original songs and his debut soul album, to the world. It carries the gift of universal appeal that towers above tastes and trends, and it's an album destined to become an instant classic.

Recorded in a shaky makeshift chicken shack in rural Maryland, Link Wray’s eponymous 1971 solo album is a compelling and forward-looking piece of honest, handmade Americana. This album is vastly different from his previous work, foregoing instrumentals entirely. Instead, Wray, left with only one lung following a bout with tuberculosis in 1956, gives us his raw voice, full of spit and vinegar, as he blends elements of country, rock ‘n’ roll, roots, folk and gospel marked with fuzzy guitar and booming percussion. He kicks off with a track, “La De Da”, that may be the greatest song the Stones never wrote. Elsewhere, the single “Fallin’ Rain” channels Dylan at his most political, with lyrics about “stabbings and shootings and young men dying all around.” Link Wray proved to be the only album that the guitarist issued in his own name to hit the American charts during his nearly 50-year recording career. Although it didn’t receive much critical acclaim at the time of its release, Link Wray has seen a resurgence in recent years and developed a cult following, with artists from Nick Cave to The Neville Brothers recording versions of its tracks.

Link Wray’s musical journey began early, with his father Fred taking up the family music business. Link, along with brothers Vernon and Doug began playing together professionally in 1942, their rowdy instrumental single “Rumble” charting at number 16 in 1958. Following a string of hits on Philadelphia-based Swan Records, Vernon began to serve as the family’s producer, eventually starting his own studio; first in the basement of his home and then–after his wife Evelyn complained about the noise–in a converted shack on the property. It was there that Link, Vernon and producer Steve Verroca found a sound that marked “a return to simplicity.” This carefully remastered reissue will take you right back to that chicken shack, and to sessions so electric you can almost feel the atmosphere.

This is the first reissue of this classic album.

Behind the project, in the wings yet right in the midst of this unheard-of music, was Ry Cooder, who regarded this encounter as the greatest musical event of his entire life. The bottleneck guitar hero had always been very interested in the music from the other Americas ever since the solo albums he made in his early years, in which he told the story of the American folk and blues in a multitude of styles. The LP "Paradise And Lunch" is no exception and begins with gospel-like grooves that smell of native soil. The faint smell of a wooden church from pioneering days wafts out of the processional antiphonal song "Jesus On The Mainline" and a healthy 12-bar blues paints a picture of what silent witnesses could tell if they could ("If Walls Could Talk"). Cooder and his sidemen felt themselves perfectly at home when adventuring further afield and this is testified to in the laid-back calypso rhythm of "It’s All Over Now" and the clip-clop of "Mexican Divorce".
This wonderful album is highly recommended for each and every number, but if you want a tip for a very special track, then just listen to the ragtime piano rolls in Bo Diddley’s "Ditty Wah Ditty".

By Autumn '66 the Spencer Davis Group was at the very pinnacle of its success, burning up the charts with self-penned originals like 'Somebody Help Me' and 'When I Get Home'. However, this album also paid homage to the (mostly American) musicians, like Elmore James and Elvis Presley, who had so inspired these young lads from Birmingham, propelling them to international stardom. Bonus tracks include their number one smash hit 'I'm A Man', plus 'Stevie's Groove' (featured in the 1966 film, The Ghost Goes Gear, a musical comedy featuring the Spencer Davis Group and a plot about a haunted house, yes you read that correctly), 1967's 'Waltz For Lumumba', and 'I Can't Get Enough Of It'. Limited edition of 500 copies on 180 gram clear vinyl.

Mississippi's Son House was already legendary for a small collection of live field recordings made by folklorist Alan Lomax in 1941 and 1942, and for having taught some important licks to both Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters before he was rediscovered by a new generation of college-age fans in 1964.
The 'Father of the Delta Blues' recorded this namesake LP for Columbia Records a year later in 1965. It's become, in the words of Living Blues magazine — »Essential recordings by one of the greatest bluesmen ever.« And now, Analogue Productions presents a reissue unmatched in sonic quality and luxury presentation. For our version we turned to Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound to remaster the recording from the original master tapes. The freshly cut lacquers were then plated and pressed on 200-gram vinyl by our own Quality Record Pressings.
Son was born Eddie James House, Jr., on March 21, 1902, in Riverton, Miss. By the age of 15, he was preaching the gospel in various Baptist churches as the family seemingly wandered from one plantation to the next. He didn't even bother picking up a guitar until he turned 25; to quote House, »I didn't like no guitar when I first heard it; oh gee, I couldn't stand a guy playin' a guitar. I didn't like none of it.« But if his ambivalence to the instrument was obvious, even more obvious was the simple fact that Son hated plantation labor even more and had developed a taste for corn whiskey. After drunkenly launching into a blues at a house frolic in Lyon, Miss., one night and picking up some coin for doing it, the die seemed to be cast; Son House may have been a preacher, but he was part of the blues world now.

Screamin' Jay has developed a rhythm that can be described
as demonic, of which 'I Put A Spell On You' and 'Hong Kong' are good examples. Behind his fiery vocals there is the force of attack and the power of an authentic champion of the boxing ring (he first made a name for himself as a talented boxer). Here's Screamin' Jay on a widely requested remastered reissue of his legendary French album!

Compilation of top notch gospel and blues recorded between 1927 and 1967. A mix of very well known artists such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Gary Davis and Robert Wilkins and more obscure folks like John Lee and Charles White. A record filled with some of Mississippi Records' favorite recordings, ripping guitar work outs, soulful ballads, loping drunken jug bands and more. All songs are on the theme of travel, death and transcendence. Got an existential crisis? This may be the record for you.

"Across the works of Americana traditionalists like Ry
Cooder and John Fahey, earnest folkies like Bruce
Cockburn and Gillian Welch, and even blues-fusion
weirdos like Beck, the sounds and influence of
Mississippi John Hurt can be felt. Among his Delta
Blues peers Hurt stood out equally for his gentle and
genial demeanor as his distinct style of blues guitar,
which heavily emphasized finger-picking and lyrical
nuance, and was intended for dancing to. A legend of
the genre that might have been condemned to
obscurity if not for the folk revival of the 1960s, which
introduced a wider audience to him and his songs,
which would be covered by the likes of Bob Dylan,
Jerry Garcia, Taj Mahal, and others.
Hurt's most definitive works can be traced back
to 1928, when he recorded several singles for
Okeh Records, where he would also come into the
acquaintance of other blues legends like Blind Lemon
Jefferson and Bessie Smith. These recordings would
later become signature songs of his, such as ""Spike
Driver Blues"", ""Stack O' Lee Blues"" and ""Avalon
Blues."" The singles were not commercially successful
at the time, but attracted greater success decades
later, when a younger generation of blues and folk
fans would embrace him, allowing him to appear on
The Tonight Show, at the Newport Folk Festival, and
tour and perform until his death in 1966. The 1928
Sessions, which started it all for Mississippi John, are
now compiled here in their entirety."
