Still more adventures in the sleazy world of popcorn noir. Welcome once more to Slow Grind Fever, the soundtrack to Melbourne’s smokiest slow dance party, where they play moody mid-century slow burners for the indolent and the aroused. Listening to the albums is nice, but when you’re up there all wrapped up in the smoke and the smells and the sizzle of the records, there’s nothing quite like it. Slow Grind Fever Vol. 6 was compiled by guest DJ Simon Laxton.. Expect the best in Slow Dance! It features Little Jimmy Scott, Bo Diddley, Malcom Dodds, Donnie Elbert and more

By the time The Second Album was released in 1966, the Spencer Davis Group had exploded onto the British music scene thanks in no small part to the incredible talent of its young organ player and singer, a kid named Stevie Winwood who had already begun drawing comparisons to some of the greatest R&B singers in history of music. The LP, again produced by Chris Blackwell, included their first No. 1 hit, a version of Jamaican singer Jackie Edwards' 'Keep On Running', which allowed the young Stevie to finally purchase his own Hammond. Featuring 5 bonus tracks, including their 1966 hit single, 'Gimme Some Lovin' b/w 'Blues In F', 'Back Into My Life Again', the Hammond-heavy 'Trampoline', and their version of Roy Orbison's classic 'Oh! Pretty Woman'. Limited edition of 500 copies on 180 gram clear vinyl.

J.B. Lenoir, born on 5 March 1929, was a cornerstone of the Chicago blues scene for years. He was on stage with other greats like Elmore James, Howlin' Wolf or Sonny Boy Williamson. Despite various song successes, however, he was long denied the opportunity to record a complete album of his own songs. This only changed in the mid-1960s when the blues connoisseur Horst Lippmann rediscovered J.B. Lenoir and made it possible for him to record his own works on two LPs: "Alabama Blues" (1965) and "Down in Mississippi". Already on his first album, Lenoir openly criticised the racism of those tumultuous days of the American civil rights movement - and thus became a pioneer of political blues. On "Down in Mississippi", recorded on 2 September 1966, the bluesman continued his criticism, putting the Vietnam War and the poverty of blacks in the USA into words, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and the well-known drummer Fred Bellow.
Unfortunately, Lenoir himself did not live to see the release of his second album, as he died in April 1967 as a result of an unexplained car accident. Both albums, however, became his legacy, inspiring other artists - from Jimi Hendrix Ober John Mayall to Wim Wenders. As a storyteller, songwriter, musician and live performer, J.B. Lenoir was a giant - and he gave a lot to the blues that made it grow and thrive."

Born in 1923 in Clarksdale MS, Wade Walton, besides working as barber, was a strong blues guitarist and harp player who toured with minstrel shows in his teens and formed the Kings of Rhythms with Ike Turner in the 40's. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1962 and originally released by Bluesville Records, "Shake ’em on Down" was his biggest album, a great piece of downhome blues which earned him international attention. People said that no trip to Clarksdale would be complete without a trip to Wade’s Barber Shop (Delta Boogie)

The music of instrumental-folk quartet NRQ seems to defy categorization. Drawing their influences from styles as disparate as free jazz, Chinese folk songs, Calypso music, and the music of the Appalachians, every song presents a new twist or turn, and every album succeeds in defying expectations. Their third album, ‘was here’ saw the band welcome trumpeter and steel pan player MC. sirafu (The Natsuyasumi Band, Kataomoi, etc.), keyboard player Emerson Murakami (mmm, Kisel, etc.), and percussionist Okyon to create a sound quite unlike anything else they’ve ever done. The album was recorded exclusively with vintage tape machines, and the result is a warm, analog sound, with just the barest amount of hiss gently enveloping each track. Combined with the oddly mesmerizing artwork, this album has been practically begging for an analog release. P-vine is proud to be giving ‘was here’ the analog treatment it has long deserved!

GA-20 was formed by friends Pat Faherty and Matthew Stubbs in Boston, MA in 2018. The project was born out of their mutual love of heavy traditional Blues, R&B, and Rock & Roll of the late 50s and early 60s. Faherty and Stubbs bonded over legendary artists like Lazy Lester, J.B. Lenoir, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Junior Wells. Feeling a void in current music, the duo have set out to write, record and perform a modern version of this beloved art form. Live, GA-20 is a trio of 2 guitars, vocals and drums. Raw, passionate and honest performance, both on stage and in the studio, is the only goal. "Lonely Soul", the title track to their debut album embodies their sound: raw, cutting, and authentic.

Dana Gillespie’s affair with the blues shows not the slightest sign of flagging. Who could have predicted it would be in her sixth decade of music-making that she’d be creating her finest work? So far, 2021 has been a banner year for the 72-year-old personality. It began with the publication of her memoir, Weren’t Born A Man. This was followed by a successful YouTube reboot of her popular radio show, Globetrotting With Gillespie. The memoir, co-written with David Shasha, is a full account of Dana’s remarkable life, from her folk singles on Pye Records and her late 60s albums for Decca to her pivotal role in the original London cast of Jesus Christ Superstar and her memorable explosion onto the glam scene as part of the Bowie/DeFries/MainMan/RCA empire, her side-sojourns in film, and her long-lasting union with Ace Records as one of the UK’s leading blues artists.

“Deep Pockets”, the follow-up to 2019’s “Under My Bed”, is a collection of 12 Gillespie originals, mostly written with long-standing lead guitarist Jake Zaitz. It is a reflective album, born of Covid lockdown: “The moment the first one happened and everyone was in a state of doom and gloom and nobody went anywhere, I was on my own and began writing lyrics.”

If ever there were a Gillespie mission statement, it could be encapsulated by ‘Beat Of My Own Drum’. “I feel strongly that all through my life I’ve danced to my own beat,” says Dana, “not to some commercial one.” Meanwhile, ‘The Truth About Lying’ is a song she could only have written now. Coming from a new artist, it might simply sound reproving, but from someone who’s really lived, its unequivocal warnings about the corrosive effects of dishonesty are chillingly plausible. Although there are moments that touch on loss, such as the haunting elegy ‘Now You’re Stardust’, the overall guiding spirit of the album could be summarised as ‘be happy, play the game’, the wisdom of the late Sri Sathya Sai Baba for whose philosophy Dana has long been a worldwide ambassador. This is never more apparent than in the touching song of universal empathy ‘We Share The Same Sky’.

Back in 2015, P-vine pressed a special edition of the Fire/Enjoy singles by Elmore James as a series of 7” discs that was quickly buried by the quick turnover of new releases and were not presented to our overseas clients. As part of a recent drive to clean up the stock-room, our dusters managed to work their magic and uncover a number of copies of this release previously unknown to the overseas marketing division. Towards the end of a career cut tragically short, Elmore James recorded a string of singles between 1959 and 1963 with renowned producer Bobby Robinson under his Fire and Enjoy record labels that would eventually lend their name to this collection. Together they would capture James’s iconic take on the blues with his effortless intersections of slide guitar complementing the marching calls from his pained Blues vocals. This feast for the eyes box-set includes nine 7” discs and a Fire Records tote bag sized perfectly for carrying your favourite 7” record and not much else. A great addition for collectors of rare blues and DJs.

In the middle of the punks vs Teds battles, Whirlwind became the go-to support act for the Clash, Blondie, Ian Dury and many others. With charismatic frontman Nigel Dixon’s pop star good looks and vocally channelling Billy Fury, this debut LP grabbed the sound of Whirlwind in the raw.

The look was encapsulated in the spectacular cover design by Barney Bubbles, which brought the 50s into the 70s. The sight of punks doing the Rock-A-Billy heel and toe skip dance in bondage trousers never ceased to amuse.

This all predated the amalgamation of the two into psychobilly and “Blowing Up A Storm” is now regarded as a quintessential album for every discerning punk hepcat…

This live set from the 1971 Montreux Jazz Festival was co-led by tenor saxophonist King Curtis (who tragically would be killed three months later) and veteran blues pianist/vocalist Champion Jack Dupree. With guitarist Cornell Dupree (in excellent form), bassist Jerry Jemmott and drummer Oliver Jackson laying down the foundation, Curtis and Dupree find a great deal of common musical ground. Dupree has quite a few witty vocals (particularly the near-classic "Junker's Blues") while taking choruses of irregular length that keep his sidemen continually guessing. Curtis' distinctive tenor is also heard from, making one truly regret that this was his final recording. (All music)

Having formed ten years ago, the latest album from T Jiros Brand NEW Caravan, released last year in Japan, is being released in analogue format to the rest of the world. Taeko Ito on guitar and vocal duties, and Tomohito Shinoda on Bass formed T Jiros in 2010 after being involved in a number of different projects, and they instantly struck up a dynamic working partnership based around Ito’s full-bodied and attention grabbing voice harking back to Blues legends of old. This is a release with a varied sound and as they traverse soul and classic rhythm and blues with Ito’s vocals reach towering heights as if possessed by the spirit of Howlin’ Wolf. There’s also tracks here that take a step back with more delicate folk ballads and an atmosphere of singing around a campfire.

The band first gathered attention with their song “Hakidame no Ai” being chosen as the lead song for the 2016 Indie film “Lowlife Love”, and they quickly followed up the following year with the release of their self-titled debut album T字路s. The very same year marked their Fuji Rock festival debut and performance for NHK television network. Three albums in and the band are more determined than ever to extract powerful expressions from within, and drag you into their trajectory. Blues music is revered for its timelessness. The best blues - no matter how old - sounds as fresh and visceral today as it did when first recorded. The high-energy electric blues trio Ga-20 - guitarist Matt Stubbs, guitarist/vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman - know this well. The band's dynamic self-penned songs sound and feel as fresh and real as the old blues they love and perform, including songs by Otis Rush, J.B. Lenoir, Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells and especially their favorite, Hound Dog Taylor. Legendary six-fingered Chicago bluesman Theodore Roosevelt "Hound Dog" Taylor always knew how he wanted to be remembered, declaring, "When I die they'll say, `he couldn't play shit, but he sure made it sound good!'" His first full length recording in 1971 was also the first album on now world-famous Alligator Records, Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers. In fact, label president Bruce Iglauer founded Alligator for the sole purpose of recording and releasing that album. Now, Colemine Records - working in partnership with Alligator Records - will release Ga-20's new full-length album, Try It_You Might Like It! Ga-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor, featuring 10 songs written or performed by the Chicago blues legend. From the fiery first single and album opener "She's Gone" to the blistering "Sadie" to the all-time Hound Dog classic "Give Me Back My Wig", Ga-20 deliver one electrifying track after another.

Electric blues guitarist Melvin Taylor had been sporadically recording solo albums for 20 years when "Dirty Pool" arrived — and was somehow just beginning to find fame. Already a hit in Europe, it had taken a steady run of performing in Chicago’s famed blues clubs to slowly earn Taylor a well-deserved reputation as an equal talent among the giants before him, such as Otis Rush, Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. While early records like "Melvin Taylor Plays the Blues For You" show off an equally amazing jazz side, Taylor traded away his Wes Montgomery-inspired runs for more Luther Allison/Jimi Hendrix attacks with the formation of the trio Melvin Taylor and the Slack Band in the mid ’90’s. The title song of the second album by that outfit, “Dirty Pool”, is actually more the balls-to-the-wall, no-compromise, hard-rockin’ electric Texas blues of Vaughan and Johnny Winter than the sweet Chicago soul of Buddy Guy. Indeed, three tracks on this 1997 release, including “Dirty Pool”, were SRV tunes. Other standards, like “Kansas City” and “Floodin’ In California” also have more of a Lone Star State approach to them. But the Jackson, Miss.-born Taylor’s guitar is cleaner than his forebears and technically, he even surpasses them, yet the anger and sorrow of the blues is readily evident in his playing. This rare combination of qualities really comes out in a slow blues tune like his solo in “Dirty Pool”, which after repeated listens, still makes me head shake in disbelief when I hear it. “Too Sorry” is a good example of how well Taylor fares when he treads in Jimi Hendrix territory, whereas his rhythm work is the best I’ve heard from a lead guitarist since Vaughan; listen to “I Ain’t Superstitious”, “Born Under A Bad Sign” and the funky “Telephone Song” for your proof. It also helps that Taylor’s drummer James Knowles is well in synch with him, while Ethan Farmer completely owns the low end of the sound. Farmer’s peppering bass lines in and “Floodin’ In California” is the textbook way electric blues bass should be. Overall, a tight little band. Taylor’s vocals certainly won’t draw any comparisons to the Wide-Brimmed–Hatted One but he holds his own just fine until it’s cuttin’ time. This is right at the top of my list of best blues guitar playing on record over the last couple of decades. If you decide to give this one a listen, prepare to be blown away.

I Be Trying might be the title of the new record from two-time Grammy nominee Cedric Burnside, but it's also a mission statement in an era when plenty of us have discovered what "the blues" really means. Recorded over three days at Royal Studios in Memphis (the home studio of Al Green and Hi Records in the 60s and 70s), this album is the ultimate statement of purpose for a critically acclaimed artist who has proudly carried the mantle of Mississippi Hill Country blues around the world. Over thirteen tracks, Burnside delivers his bruised but unfettered truth over blistering guitar and deep pocket drums-a sound birthed in his soul but developed and perfected on the road. But no matter how far he travels, the righteous sound he makes could only come from one place. I Be Trying is the sound of modern Mississippi. Produced by second-generation Memphis soul trailblazer Boo Mitchell ("Uptown Funk") and featuring guest appearances from Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) and Zac Cockrell (Brittany Howard), I Be Trying takes the sound that Burnside learned from his grandfather, blues legend R.L. Burnside, and reinterprets it into a modern, bold Black American sound that expands the sonic landscape while respecting and honoring its roots.

A stunning 2xLP collection of music documented during Alan Lomax’s final American field recording sessions from 1978 to 1983. A completely overlooked and underrepresented period in American folk and blues history, this album includes legendary performances by RL Burnside, Napoleon Strickland, Boyd Rivers, Tommy Jarrell, and many more, newly remastered and released on vinyl for the first time!

From 1978 to 1983, Alan Lomax and a video-crew travelled through the American South and Southwest, documenting its traditional music — miners, moonshiners, and Primitive Baptists in Kentucky; flat-footers, string bands, and Piedmont blues in North Carolina; Cajun cowboys, fiddlers, and zydeco stompers in French-speaking Louisiana; and fife-and-drum ensembles, gospel quartets, former railroad track-liners, levee-camp muleskinners, and players on the pre-war blues circuit in Mississippi.

This footage ultimately totaled some 350 hours and was edited into Lomax's "American Patchwork" series, which aired on American public television in 1991. But given the strictures of the form, hundreds of discrete performances and compelling scenes were left unseen and unheard.

This set brings together some of the standout recordings Lomax made in his attempt to document the last vestiges of the “local surround” in Mississippi, Appalachia, and Louisiana. Intimate performances by R.L. Burnside, Tommy Jarrell, Boyd Rivers, Napoleon Strickland and more, newly remastered by Timothy Stollenwerk and never before released on vinyl.

Album includes extensive liner notes by Nathan Salsburg of the Alan Lomax Archive. Cover art by Joe Light.

On October 12, 1929, Kathryn Culp and Sammie Lee Brown had the idea to name their first-born baby Napoleon. With such a vital beginning, little Nappy was already predestined to hit the mark, so from a very young age he stood out for his vocal qualities, well cultivated in gospel, which he practiced assiduously in The First Mount Zion Baptist Church run by his father.

To Mr. Brown's chagrin, after his first forays into religious music participating in vocal gospel groups such as The Golden Crowns, Golden Bell Quintet and The Heavenly Lights, with whom he recorded his first single for Savoy in 1954, the young Napoleon decided to try his hand at secular music, convinced by Herman Lubinsky, the big boss man of the New Jersey label.

In this way, between 1954 and 1962, Napoleon recorded a total of 28 singles at Savoy, clearly marking the transition from Rhythm & Blues to Rock’n’Roll, and also his subsequent jump to Soul, being the natural link between the late 40s southerners like Wynonie Harris or Big Joe Turner and artists like Jackie Wilson or James Brown, who cemented the black sounds of the 60s.

This LP includes a compilation of some of his best songs at Savoy, high class rock'n'roll, with a lot of dancefloor favourites like Don't BE Angry, compiled in its two versions, or Just A Little Lovin ', but also his more Bluesy sides, with songs like the fabulous Down IN THE Alley, which would be recorded years later by that certain singer born in Tupelo, Mississippi, that many times declared how much he dug Nappy Brown’s Rhythm & Blues.

In the same bluesy way Nappy wrote the iconic THE Right Time, one of the first stones of the Soul cathedral, originally recorded by Nappy on 1957, and revised one year before by Ray Charles. Ray’s version, renamed Night Time Is The Right Time, would be included as the main theme of the award-winning film IN THE Heat OF THE Night. We´ve also included Nappy’s own answer to this song, recorded in 1961 and titled as ANY Time IS THE Right Time.

Finally can´t avoid to name some of the backing musicians you´ll hear in these tracks, Sam ‘The Man’ Taylor, Mickey Baker, Panama Francis… have a look on notes bellow, oh boy! the A-Team of the mid-century New York Rhythm & Blues!

Nappy disappeared from the music scene in 1962, remaining anonymous until 1969, when he would return to Rhythm & Blues on Elephant Records with an LP whose title could not be more eloquent: Thank YOU FOR Nothing.

Since then, Nappy was very active until his death in 2008, alternating his love for gospel and Rhythm & Blues, touring the United States and Europe and releasing no less than a dozen LPs.

Like many black American blues and R&B artists, New Orleans singer and pianist Champion Jack Dupree found more respect and recognition in Europe than he did in his homeland, and he relocated to Europe in 1959, only rarely returning to the U.S. He cut several albums there, including the two included in this double-disc set from Beat Goes On, From New Orleans to Chicago, recorded in London in 1966, and Champion Jack Dupree and His Blues Band, tracked in the same city a year later (both were originally released on London Decca). Of the two, the latter release is the stronger (thanks in no small part to guitarist Mickey Baker), although From New Orleans is probably better known, mainly for the presence of Eric Clapton and John Mayall at the sessions. Throughout, listeners are treated to Dupree's thundering barrelhouse piano, his Emerald City vocals (always delivered, it seems, with a slight wink), and -- in the case of the 1967 album -- a solid and rocking backing band. Highlights include "Ain't It a Shame" and "Down the Valley" from the first disc and "Louise," "Come Back Baby" (an almost Cajun chunk of near-swamp pop), and "Georgiana," a ballad in the Ray Charles mold, from the second. Seldom have the blues been delivered with more open-ended glee, and fans of this engaging artist will undoubtedly be pleased that these albums are back in print, and packaged together. (Allmusic.com)

Blues singer and harmonica player Brian Knight (1939-2001) is counted as one of the initial members of The Rolling Stones. Co-founder of Brian Jones first band together with Ian Stewart and Dick Taylor (later Pretty Things) among others. Musical disagreement with Jones, who fancied Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry while Knight was a Muddy Waters follower, led to his departure from the group - later to be replaced by Jagger and Richards. He formed his own "Blues By Six" band, frequently with Charlie Watts on drums, and spent the following years touring and playing London clubs. In the seventies he continued with Bradford-Knight Blues Band. Always a high profile act on the English blues circuit Knight has performed with many known artists through the decades, as Rick Wakeman, Peter Green, Paul Jones, Zoot Money, Ronnie Lane, Charie Watts, Chris Farlowe...and many more. After two successful decades of touring and performing he finally got to record his debut in 1981on the independent label PVK Records. The album is a mix of standard blues and rock numbers as traditional "white blues", sometimes reminding of early British R&B from Cyril Davies or Alexis Korner. It features Dick Heckstall-Smith (Colosseum) on sax, Peter Green on guitar and Stones own Charlie Watts on drums.
