Genre:Rock / Indie
It may have taken Cornershop a few years to perfect their innovative hybrid of Indian music, British indie rock, and contemporary dance, but with the release of a third full-length album, When I Was Born for the 7th Time, the group's multicultural fusions made it an instant critics' darling. Taking their name from a common stereotype of Indians in England -- that they all own small, corner grocery shops -- Cornershop were formed by singer/songwriter, guitarist, and dholki player Tjinder Singh and guitarist, keyboardist, and tamboura player Ben Ayres after the 1991 breakup of a previous group, General Havoc. The remainder of their initial lineup featured Singh's brother Avtar on guitar and former Dandelion Adventure drummer David Chambers. Following their first gig in Harlow, they signed with the small indie label WIIIJA.

Cornershop issued two EPs over the course of 1993 (In the Days of Ford Cortina and Lock Stock & Double-Barrel, later collected as Elvis Sex-Change), but attracted more attention for their strong anti-racist politics -- specifically, their public denunciation of indie icon Morrissey. In response to Morrissey's flirtation with skinhead imagery, the group blasted him in the press and took to burning pictures of him in concerts, at press conferences, and even outside the offices of his record label. The backlash in the British music media suggested that Cornershop were nothing but publicity hounds, pointing to the amateurish, messy qualities of the band's music as evidence (indeed, the group members even took a certain pride in their lack of technical know-how during their early days, although they would later become much more accomplished). Fairly or not, Cornershop were, for the most part, dismissed as incompetent.

Through all the controversy, the group kept honing its sound, adding sitarist Anthony Saffery (who also played keyboards and harmonium) and guitarist Wallis Healey for its 1994 debut album, Hold on It Hurts. Chambers and Avtar Singh both left the group in 1995 and the new, reshuffled lineup brought on drummer Nick Simms and percussionist Pete Hall. The same year, David Byrne's worldbeat-oriented Luaka Bop label signed Cornershop to a deal and released Woman's Gotta Have It, the group's first widely accessible album. Singh's playful humor and English/Punjabi lyrics spoke to the inclusiveness of the band's vision, and hypnotic tracks like "6am Jullandar Shere" attracted positive word of mouth from critics and luminaries like Brian Eno, helping land the group on the second stage of that year's Lollapalooza. Healey and Hall both left following the record's release, however, and percussionist Peter Bengry took the latter's place.

The reception afforded Woman's Gotta Have It set the stage for the breakthrough of When I Was Born for the 7th Time. Released to hugely positive reviews in 1997, the album mixed pop songs with hypnotic, hip-hop-flavored instrumentals and featured guest spots from Allen Ginsberg and Tarnation's Paula Frazer, plus production contributions from Dan the Automator. The catchy single "Brimful of Asha," a tribute to the prolific Indian film singer Asha Bhosle, became a genuine hit in the U.K. after a remix by Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) and actually hit number one on some charts in early 1998 -- a far cry from several years before. The success led to an opening slot on Oasis' American tour, and Spin magazine named When I Was Born for the 7th Time its Album of the Year.

In the wake of this success, Singh and Ayres put the group on temporary hiatus and returned to their more dance-oriented side project, Clinton, which had released a couple of singles in 1995-1996. The debut Clinton full-length, Disco and the Halfway to Discontent, was released in the U.K. in 1999 and picked up for American distribution by Astralwerks the following year. The long silence from Cornershop gave rise to rumors that Singh had broken up the band, but he and Ayres finally returned (with Bengry, Saffery, and Simms in tow) in early 2002 with Handcream for a Generation.

After Handcream for a Generation, Cornershop entered a quiet period, surfacing briefly in 2006 with a single called "Wop the Groove," but their real comeback came three years later when they released Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast, their first album in seven years. It was also their first album to be released by their new label Ample Play, which the band would continue to run for years, putting out their own music and lots of interesting neo-psych artists as well. The band quickly followed that with a collaboration with Punjabi singer Bubbley Kaur called Cornershop and the Double-O Groove Of, and their eighth record, Urban Turban, arrived in the summer of 2012. Running their well-regarded label seemed to take over the band's time until the release in 2015 of Hold on It's Easy, an easy listening meets big band reimagining of Hold on It Hurts, with music provided by the Elastic Big Band. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

The lineup of the Los Angeles-based indie pop quartet that dog. represented the flowering of a second generation of musical luminaries: singer/guitarist Anna Waronker was the daughter of famed producer and Warner Bros. head Lenny Waronker, while bassist Rachel Haden and her violinist sister, Petra, were two of the triplet daughters born to jazz titan Charlie Haden. Friends since high school, the trio first began playing music together in Waronker's bedroom in the early '90s. Joined by drummer Tony Maxwell in 1992, that dog. issued their debut double 7" on the tiny Magnatone Records, quickly becoming a staple of the L.A. club circuit; a flurry of label interest followed, and the group signed with DGC in 1993. that dog.'s self-titled debut LP appeared in 1994; an energetic and quirky punk-pop effort highlighted by sunny harmonies and the intriguing use of violin and cello, the record became a college radio hit, and the light-hearted video for the lead single "Old Timer" even garnered some MTV airplay. The follow-up, Totally Crushed Out!, was issued a year later; a concept album wittily exploring the teen angst of unrequited love (packaged to recall a Sweet Valley High romance novel), the record marked a significant maturity in Waronker's songwriting, evidenced by tracks like "Ms. Wrong" and "He's Kissing Christian." A planned Waronker solo project was scheduled to follow, but instead, her more pop-oriented material became the basis for the third that dog. record; co-produced by Brad Wood, the stellar Retreat from the Sun appeared in 1997. The band's breakup was announced that September.

With her breathy voice and knack for catchy but artful melodies, SarahBethe Nelson sounded like a precocious indie pop newcomer with therelease of her 2015 album, Fast Moving Clouds. The truth is Nelson wasa seasoned veteran of the California music scene when her solo debutfinally expanded her reputation outside her hometown. Nelson was bornin Sacramento, California in 1977 and grew up in the nearby foothills. In 2004, she formed the roots rock band Prairiedog with Rusty Millerof Jackpot; the group released its first album, To Set Your Calendarson Fire, in 2006, and with the help of musician and producer KelleyStoltz, cut a second album, The Golden Hour, in 2011. Founded inSacramento, Prairiedog had settled in San Francisco before theyfinally called it quits in 2013. Nelson then found herself with abatch of songs that reflected a different creative direction than herold band had. Many of the tunes were informed by Nelson's job as abartender at the Mission District tavern the Make Out Room. Teamingwith a handful of musicians she'd met through her days with Prairiedogand her nights at the Make Out Room, Nelsonbegan crafting a moody andexpressive new sound, and she once again teamed with Stoltz to cut herfirst solo project. Fast Moving Clouds was picked up for release bythe well-respected California indie label Burger Records, and itimmediately made an impression with bloggers and critics, especiallythe song "Paying," written from the perspective of a woman working ata watering hole confronting a man who has broken her heart and maxedout his bar tab. Her follow-up, Oh, Evolution, was recorded by PhilManley (the Fresh & Onlys, Moon Duo) and released in early 2017. Hernew 2019 album "Weird Glow" is out on Burger Records in June.

Bassist/synth player Jesse F. Keeler and drummer/vocalist Sebastien Grainger met and formed Death from Above in 2001. (The "1979" tag was added later, following a legal spat with the U.S.-based music collective DFA.) Without a guitarist -- or any other bandmember for that matter -- Keeler and Grainger were free to push their rhythmic sound as far as it would go, and they eventually arrived at a severely overdriven rush of punk, hard rock, and dance music influences held together with high volume. After issuing a few initial singles, Death from Above 1979 released You're a Woman, I'm a Machine in 2004 and never looked back, touring alongside such high-profile bands as Nine Inch Nails and Queens of the Stone Age and generally making a sweaty, shirtless racket wherever they went.

When you think of all things Pink, a sound that fuses the likings of Basement Jaxx, the Gorillaz, CSS, and Tom Tom Club, with lyrics focused on women empowerment and re- defining the definition of kawaii or cute in Japanese, you think of CHAI. Formed in 2012, in the Nagoya region of Japan, identical twins Mana (voc/keys) and Kana (gt./cho.) would ask fellow high school classmate, Yuna (dr./cho.), and later Yuuki (ba./cho.), a college acquaintance, to join what we now know as CHAI. Both independent releases, Hottaraka Series which translates to irresponsible series, was the title of CHAIs 1st EP released in December of 2016, soon followed by Homegoro Series, their 2nd EP, released in April of the following year. CHAI scored their first US performance at SXSW 2017, followed by a series of performance dates in New York, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, a mini American tour titled Japan Nite. After coming across CHAIs irresistibly unique music video for BoysSecoMen, featured on their 2nd EP Homegoro Series, US indie label, Burger Records reached out and CHAI was immediately included in their 2017, Burger World: Japan Compilation cassette, marking CHAIs first official US release. CHAIs 1st album will be released on CD /cassette by Burger Records (USA) in February 2018.

Formed nearly a decade ago in Vancouver, Canada, the garage-rock group grew out of founders Byran Nicol, Drew Wilky, and Mike Wilky's desire to hang out, listen to records and play music. After the trio uploaded a few demos to Myspace--this was 2008, after all--a small punk record label from Iowa reached out and asked if they wanted to do a single. The single quickly led to the group's first full-length album, the self-titled Dead Ghosts."We got lucky," Nicol, the group's frontman, recalls. "When we started playing, we were just messing with recording, and generally goofing around. We had no vision at all. We just wanted to play house parties or something--that was the limit of our aspirations."Defying their own expectations, by 2015 the group had released two more albums--Can't Get No and Love and Death and All the Rest--both of which released on LA record label, Burger Records and embarked on several lengthy tours across Europe and US. Playing a distinctive brand of swaggering, blues-infused lo-fi rock, the five-piece quickly won over transatlantic fans and scored fresh fodder for their lyrics with their punk-rock antics.

Crack the coffers, Oh Sees have spawned another frothy LP of head-destroying psych epics to grok and rock out to. You'll notice the fresh dollop of organ and keyboard prowess courtesy of "Memory of a Cut Off Head' alum and noted key-stabber Tom Dolas...the Quattrone/Rincon drum-corps polyrhythmic pulse continues to astound and pound in equal measure, buttressed by the nimble fingered bottom end of Sir Tim Hellman the Brave and the shred-heaven fret frying of John Dwyer, whilst Lady Brigid Dawson again graces the wax with her harmonic gifts. Aside from the familiar psych-scorch familiar to soggy pit denizens the world over, there's a fresh heavy-prog vibe that fits like a worn-in jean jacket comfortably among hairpin metal turns and the familiar but no less horns-worthy guitar fireworks Dwyer's made his calling card. Perhaps the most notable thing about Smote Reverser is the artistic restlessness underpinning its flights of fancy. Dwyer refuses to repeat himself and for someone with such a hectic release schedule, that stretching of aesthetic borders and omnivorous appetite seems all the more superhuman. Hope you're hungry as these platters are piled high.

Hey there, human kids,
Lift your face out of the feed trough and pluck that feculence from your ears. Hark! A sonar blip from beneath the pile of bodies. Boop, blip ughhh'.
People churning like a boiling swamp. Man, this din is nauseating.
The screen flickers for the first time this year with a transmission from two months in the future:
'the internet has deemed guitar music dead and you are free to do whatever the fuck you like '.long live the new flesh!'

This album is Soundcloud hip-hop reversed, a far flung nemesis of contemporary country and flaccid algorithmic pop-barf.
No songs about money or love are floating in the ether.
Just memories, echoes, foggy blurs
Blip-blop goes the scope
Heavy funk
Dystopia-punk canons
Lonnnnng jams
Bloated solos dribbling down your caved-in chest.
Human cattle like a beef avalanche, right on your burned out face hole.
Spider legs fuzz crawling in your brain.
Lots of curse words for your mom.
You've gotten the over-population blues, so let's have some art for art's sake.
What else are you gonna do?
Stare at the sky? Please'
50 carbon copies of you look back at you as you walk the streets.
Take a breath, you're going to need it.
Take drugs, you're going to need those just to stand in line at the air and water reclamation center soon enough.
There's no fruit, buddy.
You're at the bleak-peak.
They will squeeze you till you're all squeezed out.

For fans of fried prog burn out, squished old-school drool, double drums, lead weight bass, wizard keys (now with poison), old-ass guitar and horrible words with daft meanings.
If you don't like it then don't listen, bub.
Back to the comments section with you!

Narrow Adventure (1981-1983) arose from the ashes of Goat Deity'sisters Kelly and Kristi Callan and Steve Wynn (later of Dream Syndicate). After parting ways with Wynn, the Callans recruited Kjehl Johansen from The Urinals to form Narrow Adventure. The group debuted at the Troubadour opening for The Last and The Direct Hits in September 1981. Narrow Adventure continued until 1983 when producer Vitus Mataré insisted the band change their name before including their two songs, "Anyone Like Me" and "Boy You Got Me Good", on the "WarfRat Tales" compilation. The birth of Wednesday Week coincided with Johansen leaving the band.

Operating since 2015, this quartet from Toulouse won't quit bashing whoever wants to listen with their 'Acid Western, Spaghetti Surf, Chicano Psych'
Behind this hazardous cluster of words hides what is truly a sweet garage-pop in a 60's sauce made up of crystal-clear guitars, a dab of lo-fi, a generous tape echo, and some very harmonious vocal harmonies 'on a good night'.
This sketchy clique originally dreamt of opening for its favorite bands passing through town (The Shivas, White Fence, The Growlers, etc.). Grappling in the 'pink city' to find an available studio to rehearse in, they sharpened their three-part harmonies by the coffee table, taking notes from the all-girl vocal groups they cherish (The Shirelles, The Ronettes, etc.).
After their first EP You Shouldn't Stick Around, released on Dead Bees Records in May 2016 with a big Toulouse rager with their heroes The Abigails, they are now presenting their first
album: Cogito Ergo Fog.
The LP is a sort of manifesto that celebrates their undying love of surf, country, psych and garage music all along its eleven tracks.
Entirely recorded and mixed on cassette by the band, it wants itself an invitation to share a bit of couch and ashtray just long enough to forget that tomorrow the alarm clock will ring like it does every morning.
Cogito Ergo Fog comes out on August 30th 2019 on Howlin Banana Records, Lunade'lia Records,
Le Ce'pe Records et Le Dude en Pierre du Square du Temple.

(((boing))) is the latest release from Silverton, Oregon's Thomas Mudrick, out October 22, 2013 on Portland's Ten Dollar Recording Company. 2013 has been a busy year indeed for Mudrick, with a full-length release from his side project Nodding Tree Remedies (The 45th Parallel), as well as a second full length solo effort Mongoose Thompson and the Kalapuya Spirit. Not one to be content with staying too long in the same place, all three records are all over the stylistic map, and (((boing))) stands to be perhaps Mudrick's strongest effort to date.

Through his varied work with the TDRCO crew, Mudrick has proven himself to be a true musical chameleon, multi-talented and as versatile as a Swiss Army Knife. Furthering and emboldening this stylistic doppelganglery, (((boing)))'s twelve lush and verdant tracks see Mudrick laying bare the variegated depths of his metronomic heart, hewn of one part acid-folk manifesto, one part comedic interlude, and one large dollop of rock solid, root down groove. And make no doubt about it, this album brings it in a way that would likely make Beyoncé or Kanye sit up and take notice if they weren't so busy admiring their bling or whatever it is they do with their time. To put it in the parlance of the people, (((boing))) jams in the truest sense, with every track its own insular ecosystem replete with the appropriate flora and fauna, at times surprisingly different from the track before it. Still, at the end of the day all the scattershot pieces manage to fall perfectly into aesthetic lockstep, a type of traveling musical circus humming on down the road to the next township.

On (((boing))), Mudrick deftly channels the same ear for off-beat melody, approachable esotericism, and irresistibly ass-shaking beats as anything that late 90's Ween or Midnight Vultures-era Beck ever birthed, with a number of tracks on (((boing))) giving both of the aforementioned heavyweights a dead run for the money. Add to this that Mudrick personally arranged, played, and produced most of the album's bevy of miscellaneous instrumentation, and what one is left with is a genuine one-man musical cavalry, capable of spitting off ideas with an ease and originality that the great grey masses of mustachioed neo-college rockers can only dream of. Hell, the guy even throat sings. And well, at that.

For (((boing))), Mudrick is joined by a handful of friends and fellow music-maker types, including Ian Hartley on drums and percussion, as well as TDRCO resident tuneage gurus Ryan Michael Block and Mariya May, among others. Already more than well accomplished in the talent and diversity departments, (((boing))) is certain to become another feather in TDRCO's cap, and is yet another win for the label in 2013, which has already released a spate of quality full-lengths from the likes of Chance Wiesner, Mudrick and the aforementioned Nodding Tree Remedies, and Block and May's stellar What in Your Heart Can Put You in a Trance. And we're talking quality AND quantity here, so don't get any ideas.

Lashed along the hull of (((boing)))'s twelve tracks, styles twist and turn unexpectedly, rolling and rollicking from the East Asian opium den chill-out of "Orange Vibes", to the vacuum-sealed goof-funk of "Banana Peel", the bloodshot island ghetto cruising of "Kamikaze Minivan", and the polyphonic Jesus and Mary Chain revivalism of "Blackstone Blues". And we're just getting warmed up, here. (((boing))) is surprising not only given its effortless genre bending, but also due to the slowly dawning realization as each track is followed by the next that Thomas Mudrick is one talented motherfucker. And to top it off, he's got a grounded sense of humor and quirk, and isn't holding back on what he wants to do for the sake of you or anyone else. To wit, these are hallmark qualities that we should be demanding from more of our artist types, but that's another dialectic entirely.

To be sure, there isn't a dull moment on (((boing))), and likely the first response to the final shimmering strains of iridescent album closer "She Turns Out of Time" is to immediately hit repeat on this baby. And why wouldn't you want to come straight back to the 70's AM flower-hour make-out session of "Soul Glow", the barnstorming foot-stomp of "Do Me Like Jesus", the acid-drenched county fair folk of "Gurngy" (complete with bongos and hand-claps!), or the out-of-left-field warp groove of "Boomarangatang"? Tether it all to some choice cover selections, such as a falsetto-hinged dub version of Aaliyah's "Try Again", or the psychedelic aboriginal sun worship of Rolf Harris' and Harry Butler's "Sun Arise" (nice one), and you're almost there. Closing out with the glittering, embryonic ode to Gaia "She Turns Out of Time", (((boing))) aims to lively up yourself, and there's no reason why this album shouldn't be on a raft of "Best of 2013' lists. For those with their ears to the ground, that is.

Thomas Mudrick's latest opus (((boing))) is out October 22, 2013 from the perennially trend-subverting folk at Portland's Ten Dollar Recording Company, along with a lot of other ear-stretching stuff that you should definitely take a listen to. So mosey on over and give 'em a look-see, partner. (Reed Burnam)

The Exbats are a band from Bisbee, Arizona; a desolate hippie enclave along the Mexican/U.S. border. The town stretches along a super enormous pit from a mining operation that stopped decades ago. There are a bunch of bars and arty type gift shops in town. No stop lights. No Starbucks. It is from this place The Exbats write their hit songs, for an unsuspecting world. When we (Inez and Kenny McLain, father daughter rockers, with basser Bobby) get a fresh batch, we drive them into Tucson and record them at Midtown Island Studios, with kindred soul Matt Rendon (The Resonars). From there, the finished hits are sent to Fullerton CA for distribution by the Burger Records family. Ultimately these song should transmit a sense of possibility. The possibility of love. The possibility of loss. The unlimited possibility to party on, to follow your own desire. Oh yeah, and ... to FIGHT!

The Sufis are an Anglo-Indian/American band based on the wri:ng partnership of Calvin Laporte and Evan Smith. During a chance mee:ng at Belmont University in Nashville, TN they bonded over a shared love of the Elephant 6 Collec:ve and 20th-century classical music.
AKer spending their forma:ve years obsessively consuming and studying many different kinds of music, they set out to create their own musical universe. Under the guidance of Nashville tape wizard Randy Blevins, they built their dream recording studio in 2011. Not was:ng any :me, they set out recording their debut album enlis:ng the help of their friends, including local wunderkinds the Paperhead. These recordings quickly caught the aSen:on of Ben and Tjinder of Cornershop who released the album on their label, Ample Play, in the summer of 2012.
Upon release The Sufis was named Rough Trade Album of the Month and also received high praise from the likes of The Times, Shindig!, Record Collector, and Rolling Stone's David Fricke who called it 'an extended reach into the droning minimalism of the Velvet Underground and Faust's tape manipula:on.' They quickly followed up with Inven, ons in 2013, an ambi:ous aSempt to consolidate their love of The Shaggs, Wesley Willis and Bach.
The next few years found The Sufis focusing more on produc:on and engineering du:es for Paperhead, Peter Stringer-Hye, Universal Friend, Paul Messis/The Market Squares and many others. It's hard to keep up with the computer-controlled advancements in rhythm circuitry today.

Some companies excel with integrated memory and percussive variations, while others struggle to discover when it is time to stop adding and to start dividing. That's why local l.a. law departments are almost always entirely full of digital, programmable sequences that are difficult to extract from integrated memory. The solution is a cost effective example of time based rhythmic forensic science.

For a while, it seemed like the Rifle was the hub of Tucson music, whether representing Southern Arizona on tour with bands like the Exbats or The Elegant Rabies, or making an impact on top albums lists from far beyond our dusty "shores." In truth, it hasn't been that long since we've heard from them, but the past couple of months' live show hiatus seems, in Tucson terms, inordinately long, like when John Lennon took a five-year sabbatical from recording. And, much like Lennon's extended exile, the Rifle's slight hiatus was prompted, among other things, by domestication. The band's frontwoman, guitarist/vocalist Nelene DeGuzman and her longtime partner, bassist Kevin Conklin were married last November, in a service officiated by their good friend (and Conklin's Elegant Rabies bandmate) Michael Ely. The couple also bought and are renovating a house and even drummer Randy Rowland has been doing a bit of nesting, having recently moved to a new apartment. With a Rifle-shaped hole in our musical hearts, many local music fans are psyched to hear that 2019 is set to bring a followup to the band's breakthrough album "Anabasis," and that new music is on the horizon. And, much like the proverbial groundhog, they are emerging from hibernation with an eye on a glorious spring.

One of the most notorious Australian pub rock bands, Cosmic Psychos play beer-fueled, garage-accented, heavy-hitting punk rock with no frills and no pretensions. Officially beginning their journey together in 1985, the Psychos gained a reputation for not caring about money as much as the free beer, laughs, and occasional overseas traveling involved with being in a rock band. Despite their lack of careerism, the band has had just that: a career that's spanned four-plus decades, seen them release over a dozen albums, sing with Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, befriend Mudhoney, and supply beer to the then-underage Silverchair at Australia's Big Day Out Festival.

In the late '70s, bassist Ross Knight was playing in a high school punk band called Rancid Spam in Victoria, Australia, two hours north of Melbourne. Around the same time, guitarist Peter Jones and drummer Bill Walsh were performing together in the Melbourne group Spring Plains. After Spring Plains lost their bass player in 1982, Walsh and Jones asked their friend Knight for his assistance. Knight agreed to join them on bass, and by 1985 the threesome handed the original singer his walking papers. After deciding that Knight would take over vocal duties, the group changed its name to Cosmic Psychos.

The band played its first gig as Cosmic Psychos at the Stockade Pub in Carlonand, Australia, with the Moodists. That same year, Cosmic Psychos recorded their debut EP, Down on the Farm, on a two-track tape machine in their practice space and released it on Australia's Mr. Spaceman Records and Europe's What Goes On label. Two years would pass before Cosmic Psychos would release their first full-length, Cosmic Psychos. Mr. Spaceman released the vinyl version, while Australian label Shagpile had the CD counterpart distributed through Shock Records. By 1989, Cosmic Psychos saw their second full-length album, Go the Hack, released by Australia's Survival; it also became their first American release when Sub Pop brought it out in the United States. The band followed Go the Hack with its first live album, Slave to the Crave, in 1990, which was taken from a June 1989 performance at Melbourne venue the Palace.

As 1990 set in, Jones vacated the guitar spot. Knight and Walsh asked their friend Robbie Watts, a self-taught guitarist, to join the fold. Watts said yes and Cosmic Psychos ventured to Wisconsin to record their third full-length release, Blokes You Can Trust, at producer Butch Vig's Smart Studios. Released in 1991, Blokes You Can Trust was the band's first record for the American noise rock label Amphetamine Reptile, after the bandmembers became drinking buddies with label head Tom Hazelmeyer. (AmRep would also reissue Down on the Farm and Cosmic Psychos on a two-fer CD.) The Psychos conducted a European tour during which they developed an unusual trademark. After seeing many other rock bands take bows after performances, at the end of a show in Potsdam, Germany, Cosmic Psychos decided to alter the tradition by pulling down their pants and mooning the unsuspecting audience.

The release of the 1991 "Dead Roo" single was followed by the Back to School EP, which included a cover of L7's "Shove." The latter track was a nod to the Los Angeles all-female rock band, who'd covered a Cosmic Psychos song on a 7" EP. Amphetamine Reptile also had the band contribute a track to its Dope, Guns and Fucking in the Streets, Vols. 4-7 compilation. The year 1993 saw the release of Palomino Pizza, a six-song EP featuring three cover songs of old Australian pub classics from the likes of Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, Buffalo, and Guitar Overdose. The bandmembers criticized themselves in interviews, saying they felt that the CD was a half-hearted effort on their part, but they toured in support of the disc nonetheless. They played shows in the United States with Superchunk and the Onyas. Later that year, Cosmic Psychos recorded a split 7" with the band Vertigo. The record, released on Hippy Knight, was a tribute to noise rock group Halo of Flies (whose lineup included Tom Hazelmeyer) and featured the Psychos playing their own rendition of "Garbage Rock."

Throughout 1994, Knight spent time on his farm in Australia recording various song ideas, amassing 40 riffs on one cassette. Cosmic Psychos rummaged through the material and came up with what critics considered their strongest album to date, 1995's Self Totalled; the group members spent a thousand dollars on liquor to get themselves through the weeklong session. The band played a number of gigs in America and ended their tour in Australia, where they opened for Pearl Jam in Sydney on the recommendation of Mudhoney's Matt Lukin, who suggested to Eddie Vedder that he look the Psychos up. The audience of 37,000 wound up booing the Psychos' 45-minute set, and the band responded with their bare-bottomed thanks. The Psychos rounded out their Self Totalled tour by playing at Australia's Big Day Out festival, which featured the Screaming Trees, Hole, Silverchair, Primal Scream, Luscious Jackson, the Offspring, and Ministry.

At the beginning of 1996, the Shagpile label released a 7" single featuring the Self Totalled track "Whip Me" along with acoustic renditions of Down on the Farm's "Crazy Woman" and Go the Hack's "Lost Cause." (The CD version included two extra unplugged songs.) The band had never recorded with acoustic instruments before, but growing tired of MTV Unplugged, the band figured they'd release their own version to poke fun at the program's popularity. Along with producer Lindsay Gravina, the band recorded the tracks with a pre-recorded audience at Birdland Studios. To the band's surprise, the acoustic numbers received heavy airplay on a large number of Australia's radio stations. A condensed version of the unplugged session was released in the United States on Man's Ruin Records. Cosmic Psychos finished their seventh full-length album at the start of 1997 and gave in to their obsession with Australian meat pies, titling the record Oh What a Lovely Pie. The album came out that summer on Amphetamine Reptile in the United States and Europe. It contained ten songs dealing with everything from dominatrix girlfriends to serial killers. The release was followed by a 24-date tour of Europe with the Melvins. Following the jaunt, the two bands recorded a split 7" for Gearhead Records, which included the Psychos' cover of the Sweet's "Some Girls." (Gearhead also included the song on their Runnin' on Fumes: The Gearhead Magazine Singles compilation.)

Throughout 1998, Cosmic Psychos continued to tour in support of Oh What a Lovely Pie. Their Australian and European shows included supporting act the Onyas, while in the United States they gigged with Gaunt, Mudhoney, and Nashville Pussy. After a three-month break back in Australia, Cosmic Psychos returned to the United States in July of 1999, teaming up with their old friends the Melvins to promote their split 7". By the end of the year, work also began on a Cosmic Psychos retrospective LP culling tracks from their first 15 years together. As the year 2000 reared its head, Cosmic Psychos released 15 Years, A Billion Beers, which included rare outtakes, B-sides, and material from their previous records. A European tour with supporting act the Mobile Homos was scheduled to celebrate Cosmic Psychos' anniversary. Watts decided to sit the tour out, and Knight and Walsh hired the Raunch Hands' guitarist Mike Mariconda to play the gigs.

In 2005, drummer Bill Walsh left Cosmic Psychos, and was replaced by Dean Muller, who played in Ross Knight's side project Dung. Muller made his recording debut with the Psychos on 2006's Off Ya Cruet, which included a bitter kiss-off to Walsh, "Kill Bill." On July 1, 2006, while the band was on tour promoting the album, Robbie Watts died of a heroin overdose. The Psychos soldiered on, with John McKeering of the Onyas taking over on guitar. The band soon returned to the studio, and Dung Australia was released in 2007, dedicated to Watts' memory. Four years later, the Psychos released Glorius Barsteds, and in 2012 the band played a run of shows at Melbourne's Tote Hotel shortly before the venue was closed. The shows were filmed and recorded; an album was released, 2013's I Love My Tractor: Live at the Tote Hotel, Melbourne, and footage from the shows appeared in Matt Weston's documentary about the band, Cosmic Psychos: Blokes You Can Trust, which included testimonials from Eddie Vedder, Buzz Osborne from the Melvins, and Mark Arm and Steve Turner of Mudhoney. The year 2015 brought the studio album Cum the Raw Prawn, which was issued in Australia on CD as well as LP in a special pressing the color of beer. The group's 11th studio album, Loudmouth Soup, appeared in 2018, and was followed by an exhaustive 28-date tour of Australia. ~ Stephen Howell & Mark Deming, Rovi

In an era when the city kvetches that there are no good NYC bands, when half of the music scene has split for sunny California, the Mystery Lights are an anomaly. Not only did these bold young men reverse the direction ' optimistically migrating east against the tide from the west coast, but they also landed in the wormy apple to immerse themselves in the action and diversity of New York City. They all share an apartment in Ridgewood, Queens - the basement of which they've converted into a makeshift rehearsal space. Betting against the odds to live the archetypical 20th century downtown musician lifestyle in 2016, though inevitably further east of the bridge, they also play with the kind of conviction, immediacy, and raw power of their mighty ancestors ' from the Velvets to the Voidoids and beyond. The Mystery Lights are living proof that vital contemporary music, in this case real-deal rock'n'roll, can still be dreamed, constructed, and performed in the Empire City.

Despite forming in 2008, the Shrine feel like a band from a wilder, more reckless era. With a sound that harks back to the early days of punk and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the Venice, California band has a sound that evokes the past without relying on nostalgia. Made up of guitarist and vocalist Josh Landau, bassist Court Murphy, and drummer Jeff Murray, the trio merges driving energy with bluesy riffs to create a sound that feels like an unholy union between Black Flag and Black Sabbath. The Shrine debuted their self-described ''psychedelic violence'' in 2012 with Primitive Blast, and continued their reckless streak with a sophomore effort, Bless Off, in 2014. In 2016, the Shrine signed a record deal with powerhouse metal label Century Media, who released their third long-player, Rare Breed, the same year. - 01 - Cruel World02 - Dance On A Razor's Edge03 - The Taste Of Blood04 - She Is Never Satisfied

Fast Moving Clouds was picked up for release bythe well-respected California indie label Burger Records, and itimmediately made an impression with bloggers and critics, especiallythe song ''Paying,'' written from the perspective of a woman working ata watering hole confronting a man who has broken her heart and maxedout his bar tab. Her follow-up, Oh, Evolution, was recorded by PhilManley (the Fresh & Onlys, Moon Duo) and released in early 2017. Melbourne post-punk outfit PINCH POINTS play clean, angular guitar harmonies and heavy biomechanical riffs, belting-out group-vocals, all at a turbo-punk speed. J. Edward Keyes of Bandcamp Daily described their sound as 'a barbed-wire coil of sound that's as loose and springy as it is dangerously serrated.'Despite only having started gigging in May of 2018, PINCH POINTS are like a well oiled machine. They dropped their debut EP 'MECHANICAL INJURY' on cassette in July through Roolette Records, which ended up being 1 of 4 albums included in Bandcamp's 'Best 100 releases of 2018', as well as getting an EU release through French label Six Tonnes de Chair.

I happened across Somewhere Anywhere like a troll... walking down web street, I walked by a window playing music and clicked on a door. I saw a rock in the middle of the room, and I looked underneath it. The moment I heard the title track Somewhere Anywhere, I thought I had unearthed a rarity, an old bootleg or new music from a lost group. The best part was that it came from the living, a band playing music at this very time in space. Armed with nothing more than a guitar and a drum machine, Colleen Green's gritty, sweet, irrepressibly fun tunes nod to girl-dominated indie pop acts (Helen Love, the All Girl Summer Fun Band, and Cub are all good touchstones), the Ramones (one of her early tracks was called ''I Wanna Be Degraded''), and pop-punk acts like blink-182 (the blogosphere raved about her cover of ''M&Ms''); Green, not at all shy about her drug use, would go on to characterize her style of music as ''stoner pop.'' A Massachusetts native, Green moved to Oakland, California in 2008 with a handful of close friends. Once there, Green and her friends formed the Full House House, a live music venue run out of their living room. Green also began working on her own recordings, self-releasing a CD-R EP, 4 Loko 2 Kayla (a reference to her housemate and friend Kayla), and a cassette tape, Milo Goes to Compton, in 2010. The releases made waves among indie music bloggers, and Green was picked up by Hardly Art Records before the year was out. Her debut single on that label, Green One (with cover art featuring Kayla and Colleen), was released in early 2011. The Cujosingle followed later that year, then in 2012, Art Fag re-released Milo on LP. Her debut full-length album, Sock It to Me, was released in early 2013 by Hardly Art. In the 1980s, Chicano pop/punk ensemble THE BRAT ruled the East L.A. music world, an underground scene which featured other nascent Eastside punkers such as Los Illegals, Thee Undertakers, Los Lobos and The Stains, and which was championed on LA's Westside by the likes of X and The Plugz. During that time THE BRAT released only one EP, the extremely rare (and coveted) 'Attitudes', before their 1986 dissolution, leaving just morsels for younger generations to discover. They were political. They were influential. And then they were gone. THAT's punk rock: loud, fast, out. Their story has largely remained untold, but 'Straight Outta East L.A.' (RockBeat/MVD) has it all - the 'Attitudes' EP, plus choice unreleased recordings - in one loud, explosive package. And there's more to come. Discover what makes THE BRAT so powerful!

Too Young To Be In Love

Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Too Young To Be In Love is the first fully-realized Hunx and His Punx album, and the group’s first for Hardly Art. It was recorded in New York City by Ivan Julian—one of the founding members of inimitable NYC punk legends Richard Hell and the Voidoids. This record was made in the same studio that one of Hunx's idols, Ronnie Spector, once recorded in. While it is preceded by the Gay Singles LP (True Panther Sounds/Matador Records, 2009), a collection of hard-to-find and out-of-print 7” singles, Too Young To Be In Love is the first proper studio record from Hunx and His Punx.

Too Young To Be In Love also marks the first time the group has ever been comprised entirely by “punkettes”—another name for the all girl band that band leader Seth Bogart (aka Hunx) always dreamed of. Shannon Shaw (of Shannon and the Clams) plays bass, and wrote three of the album’s songs. Her powerful voice on “Lovers Lane” and “The Curse of Being Young” crackles and breaks with a raw ferocity that perfectly compliments Hunx’s swoon-worthy nasal croon. This album also represents a distinct reversal of roles—the all-girl quartet (Shaw, plus guitarist Michelle Santamaria, drummer Erin Emslie, and Amy Blaustein on guitar/organ) bring the fire… while Hunx brings the softness—the sweet, oh so sweet, sugar. All of the ladies sing on this album, and their voices combine to create some modern Wall of Sound magic.

Hunx and His Punx might be the first ever "girl group" fronted by a flamboyant gay male whose dream in life is to sound like a girl. They have created a unique new sound they refer to as "Young Oldies," a mixture of 50s teenage rock ‘n’ roll, 60s girl groups and bubblegum pop.

Hunx is that boy you just wanna kiss—maybe after sharing a triple scoop ice cream cone, then roller skating with the Shangri-Las and Redd Kross rotating on a never-ending loop. He’s the boy in that picture from your high school yearbook—the one you pasted sparkly red heart stickers all over, then taped inside your locker. He’s the boy you fantasize about because he always saves you from your broken heart. You’ve never met him—but you love him… because you know he believes in love.

“I only write songs out of heartbreak,” says Hunx of the new record. Older songs focused on trashier homoerotic topics like cruising and boyfriend stealing. But Too Young To Be In Love is all about love and heartbreak. People tend to have scandalous ideas about Seth “Hunx” Bogart. This can happen when you try to French kiss the entire front row at one of your shows, pose for photographs nude or bare everything in the video for "Lust For Life" by the band Girls. But behind all of this is a sweet and somewhat innocent entertainer who knows how to put on a show.

Despite the sweet overtones of Too Young To Be Love, there is also plenty of heartbreak and some dark moments. One might think, at first glance, that the final track, “Blow Me Away” is a winking nod to fellatio. “It’s a song about my father who killed himself when I was a teenager,” says Hunx, somehow proving that the album’s title, Too Young To Be In Love, might be selling Bogart a little short. He has never been “too young.” And he really does believe in love.

After doing brief tours with Girls, Harlem, Nobunny and Jay Reatard, the band is set to embark on a headlining US tour in April 2011.

Luther Russell was the leader of seminal roots-rock band The Freewheelers and is now an acclaimed solo artist and producer. It was the documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me that brought Jody and Luther together creatively, when Jody asked Luther to join him for some promo performances. A chemistry was immediately noticed. They began writing songs and performing them whenever possible, soon taking their name from the opening line of Shakespeare Sonnet 41, which they slipped into one of their first collaborations, 'Fool Of Myself'. Burger Records released the first track they cut in Memphis, 'Lucky Guy', with 'Fool Of Myself' as the flip side. There was an outpouring of support for the new music, which gave Jody and Luther the confidence to move forward. Those Pretty Wrongs was tracked entirely to 2' tape at Ardent Studios in Memphis, using much of the old Big Star gear, including Jody's original kit from Radio City and Third and Chris Bell's acoustic and electric guitars from #1 Record. The album was mixed by Luther Russell and Jason Hiller at Hiller's Electrosound Studios in Los Angeles, CA. Jody is way out in front on this release--really for the first time ever--taking all lead vocals and co-writing all of the songs with Luther. Through the words on this record Jody opens up about his life, which has been well-documented, but not in this very intimate way. Adds Stephens: 'For me the lyrics are a walk through day-to-day emotions and experiences."

The group later joined with singer Rozz Williams to make up a new incarnation of his band Christian Death, where Demone remained before relocating to Amsterdam and mounting a solo career in 1989, adopting an increasingly torchy sound over the course of EPs including A Heavenly Melancholy and Lullabies for a Troubled World. After releasing the 1994 live set With Love and Dementia, she reunited with Williams the next year to release Every Dreamhouse Heartache. In 2013, she formed the Gitane Demone Quartet with her life partner -- and former Christian Death bandmate -- Rikk Agnew, Paul Roessler (ex-the Screamers), and Deb Venom (Debra Erin Benham). Their sound walked the boundary between gothic rock and contemporary jazz.

Do you know a good entertainment lawyer? The Catholic church is using my music without my permission." - David Liebe Hart on David Liebe Hart Meets Jad Fair And Jason Willett The music industry thrives on labeling artists. The practice is so deeply embedded that even the subgenres of subgenres have their own subgenres. Within this hyper-regulated system, there is no place for the indescribably unique. Artists who flagrantly disregard the system are deemed outsiders, a distinction that eventually morphed into a label of its own. With that said, Joyful Noise Recordings is proud to present David Liebe Hart Meets Jad Fair And Jason Willett, a project that unites two titanic figures from the world of outsider expression. For fans of wild unrestrained rock and roll, Jad Fair needs no introduction. Jad has spent the last forty years demolishing rock music norms with Half Japanese and various other projects. While David Leibe Hart is best known for his otherworldly puppetry on the Cartoon Networks Adult Swim, hes been recording music since 2004 when he issued his self-released debut Christian Hymns And Songs Of Praise. Jad and David didnt meet before or during this long-distance collaboration, but both artists express a mutual admiration. "I was so pleased to work with David. He has a real creative flow and his style is very fresh, says Jad. "I think Jad Fair is a super-genius and a talented person, offers David. The result of their artistic partnership is immediately humorous, occasionally dark, and ultimately touching in its naked emotional expression. Davids unconventional lyrics address a variety of autobiographical themes, from an appreciation of nature, to an almost erotic love for lentil beans. Beyond those concerns David takes listeners on a kaleidoscopic trip through trash TV based partially on his own experiences as a bit actor in Hollywood during the 70s and 80s. A songwriter is a painter who paints what he's experienced and what he's gone through. I just paint what I've experienced, David explains. David certainly chose themes that wouldn't have come to my mind to write songs about, counters Jad. The end result is an album as compelling as it is unusual. David Liebe Hart Meets Jad Fair And Jason Willett is a milestone release in outsider music

The language of garage punk is not well adapted to expressing optimism. Its usually more about fighting bad vibes with worse ones and flipping the bird at ill fortune, even (especially) if you brought it on yourself. On El Futuro, the third solo album from AJ Dávila, however, the former guitarist for sadly defunct Puerto Rican garage punk band Dávila 666 expands the genres vocabulary with an updated sound that promises a way forward for his music and for fucks-free rock n roll in general.

After playing drums for countless other bands, including Shilpa Ray and WALTZ, Robert Preston went for a change and began his solo project, Pink Mexico. After moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, Preston self-released the first Pink Mexico LP, pnik mxeico, in June of 2013, attracting the attention of Austin-based record label Fleeting Youth Records, who then re-released pnik mxeico the following December. Preston relocated to Brooklyn in the fall of 2014 to begin recording his next album while continuing other releases: a split 7" with Los Angeles-based band, SunLikeDrugs as well as a 12 vinyl pressing of pnik mxeico by Bordeaux, France based label Big Tomato Records. The underground buzz surrounding the first LP led Preston into the Burger Records family. Following countless Brooklyn shows and making the rounds at this years SXSW, Pink Mexico has grown as a band comprised of Grady Walker & Ian Everall.

Outrageous Cherry combined psychedelia, folk rock, art rock, and bubblegum music across more than 12 albums and nearly three decades. They attracted an international cult following and were a longstanding fixture in the Detroit rock and roll scene since their first gigs in 1991. MEET YOU IN THE SHADOWS is their final studio album, completed before the passing of founding lead guitarist Larry Ray. Some of the songs, like "Lies Feel Good" and "Creeps Retreat", address contemporary social and political turmoil, while "The Beginning of the End of the Night" and "Complicate Me" are more of a psychological hall of mirrors. The title track, "Meet You in the Shadows" is all of these things at once.

So this is the new album by Timmy Vulgars band Timmys Organism, so named because its a beast. Vulgar (guitar/vocals) made it in six months in spring 2018 with Jeff Giant (bass) and Blake Bovver Hill (drums), two guys whove been the beating about-to-burst heart of the Organism for about three albums now, including one for Third Man and one for In The Red. Ive been on almost every single underground garage punk label there is, says T.V. proudly, and now hes the fresh meat on Burger. But when you hear a Timmy Vulgar record, you will know its a Timmy Vulgar record and nobody elses record, and Survival of the Fiendish is an extremely Timmy Vulgar record. Even more Vulgar! Its as Vulgar as Vulgar gets. Sure, make connections: Guzzle Gasoline is like Raw Power-ed freak rock; God of Comedy is like Destroy All Monsters on a solo Roky nightmare trip; Bitter Pill is like one of those Cleveland 197X tearjerkersRocket From The Tombs, Dead Boys, aint it fun?about losing your mind to and Wall Of Grey is post-apocalypse proto-punk just like Chrome and Mick Farren knew would come true. Its been almost twenty years and Timmy Vulgar is still the king of hard-to-make (and harder to fake) rock n freak n roll made from black light and white heat. Hes been covered in bloodstains, killed by death, ripped from the crypt and sent back from the grave. He worked long and hard to get you this music. He went out into the dark and brought back fire. Thats what must be done to survive.

What started off in 2001 as a musical project between co-workers at a Tower Records in Los Angeles, slowly dwindled down to a duo in 2011. On November 27, 2012, after years of musical isolation from the industry, The Smoking Trees released their debut album, Acetates (Colour Tree Records), then signed to Ample Play Records the following month, and re-released Acetates to a bigger audience in May 2013. In February 2015, before the release of their critical acclaimed second LP, TST (Ample Play/Burger Records), L.A.AL aka Al Rivera left the duo down to the groups founder, writer, and producer, Sir Psych (Martin Nuñez). After Als departure, Martin finished writing and recording their third release, The Archer and The Bull (Burger Records). Being that Sir Psych wrote, produced, and mixed all of The Smoking Trees music, Als departure didnt hinder what he did best. The Adventure Continues for The Smoking Trees this November, with a new LP on Burger, to extend your Summer this Fall.

Dear Someone, Happy Something is the debut album by London based sisters Rowan, Robin and Sylvie. The three sisters from Honor Oak Park in South London, with an average age of only 13 and a ½ years old, write songs that reflect a disarmingly frank childs-eye view of the world. Honey Hahs have been championed by, and played shows with, Goat Girl, Fat White Family, Insecure Men, Shame, Micachu and The Moonlandingz amongst others. Dear Someone, Happy Something was recorded in London with Steve Mackey. Rowan plays guitar and piano, Robin plays bass and Sylvie plays drums, and they all sing and harmonise.

Its been over six years now since the word got out that the Titans from The Big O* (as in Oslo, Norway) were re-resurrected for a second time since their grimy beginnings back in 1989. «Hell, not even Jesus could do THAT!» music lovers worldwide were heard to shriek. Back in the saddle, the band have crisscrossed the globe delighting fans old and new, packing em in from LA to Ålesund, Melbourne to Manchester and all points in between. November 2015 heralded the unveiling of not only the first new music since 2012s Sexual Harassment but a new member for the group! Hot For Nietzsche found our boys on full throttle, staring the void right in the face and raising a glass to its honour. The video was shot on location in Vegas a suitable backdrop for the debauchery. The HFN single release show in Oslo saw the stage debut of the newest edition to the denim recruits: Keyboard Wizard Crown Prince Haakon-Marius, a hugely invaluable addition to the line-up, according to Guitar Ubermensch Euroboy: «Were happy to have a keyboard player back in the band again, six years after Pål Pot Pamparius performed his last show with the band. Crown Prince Haakon Marius is a friend of ours from the Oslo music scene and an amazing musician! We had so much fun getting back in the studio as a six piece, to record new material which the addition of a keyboard-player inspired the songwriting and the production.» Well, lightning does strike twice, because May 2016 saw ANOTHER new single! Just in time for final exams, TURBONEGRO unleashed Special Education to the unsuspecting public. A story of a teenage boys fall from academic grace and the cruel and unusual discipline he finds at the very bottom, the song was inspired by repeated watchings of Scum and The Story Of O on the tour bus VHS player; «They were the only tapes we had!» Guitarist Rune Rebellion confesses. Bass player and cultural commenter Happy Tom could not contain his excitement!

The Sufis are an Anglo-Indian/American band based on the writing partnership of Calvin Laporte and Evan Smith. During a chance meeting at Belmont University in Nashville, TN they bonded over a shared love of the Elephant 6 Collective and 20th-century classical music. After spending their formative years obsessively consuming and studying many different kinds of music, they set out to create their own musical universe. Under the guidance of Nashville tape wizard Randy Blevins, they built their dream recording studio in 2011. Not wasting any time, they set out recording their debut album enlisting the help of their friends, including local wunderkinds the Paperhead. These recordings quickly caught the attention of Ben and Tjinder of Cornershop who released the album on their label, Ample Play, in the summer of 2012. Upon release The Sufis was named Rough Trade Album of the Month and also received high praise from the likes of The Times, Shindig!, Record Collector, and Rolling Stones David Fricke who called it an extended reach into the droning minimalism of the Velvet Underground and Faust's tape manipulation. They quickly followed up with Inventions in 2013, an ambitious attempt to consolidate their love of The Shaggs, Wesley Willis and Bach. The next few years found The Sufis focusing more on production and engineering duties for Paperhead, Peter Stringer-Hye, Universal Friend, Paul Messis/The Market Squares and many others. Frustrated with the small town aesthetic of Nashville, they spent time traveling around, eventually settling on Brooklyn, NY as their new home base. After a short stint of working and studying with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela they swiftly began work on their third album, After Hours. Drawing influence from their surreal, late night adventures they wrote and recorded the entire album in June of 2017.

A Place for Nothing And Everything In Its Place was recorded in early 2016 in Berlin, Germany. Originally conceived to be an introspective acoustic album, the written songs, once in the studio, developed into a fully arranged, conceptual work. With the help of producer Leonard Kaage, the acoustic intention became the red line that guides the nine songs through their variety. Bryants lyrics go a more personal way and follow inner and outer conflicts captured through the words of a restless outsider who ends up finding the company of love. The album is filled with dreamy footnotes of piano, 60s percussion and a more than once appearance of edgy guitars. Imagine a classic singer/songwriter record loaded with the intimacy and grit reminiscent of Alex Chilton or Nikki Sudden. A true milestone that marks an important progression in Bryants career as a solo artist. The album got its finishing touch by the mastering of Los Angeles pioneer Dave Cooley (Ariel Pink, The Black Angels, M83).

Record label founder. Recording wizard. Power pop maestro. Wyatt Blair is a man of many disciplines. Blair began Lolipop Records out of his parents’ Laguna Beach garage in 2010 with a simple goal of recording his friends and sharing their music with the world. When Wyatt moved the label to Los Angeles in 2012, he inadvertently started a rock ‘n’ roll revolution — spawning an army of sweet-toothed teens with an insatiable appetite for the sugary garage pop sounds of Lolipop bands — most of them discovered by Blair himself. However, even as he assumed his role as the hardest working man in LA’s flourishing garage rock scene, Blair continued to write, record and produce his own music at a prolific rate. His debut full-length, “Banana Cream Dream,” immortalized his love of all things sweet and solidified his place as one of LA’s top tunesmiths. So, where does one go after assuming the throne of dessert-themed rock ‘n’ roll?Blair’s latest LP, ‘Point of No Return’ (out August 5th on Lolipop and Burger Records), is an unabashed love letter to the arena rock, glam and hair metal heroes that he holds so close to his heart. Channeling the soaring, harmonized guitar solos, lovelorn lyricism and workout-ready rhythms, “Point of No Return” plays like a lost gem from the long player generation.
