Reuniting the best session musicians Japan had to offer to make an album that would evoke the atmospheres of South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations in. Pacific (1978) is a treat to the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relax its listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and that good old 1970’s funk while remaining surprisingly fully instrumental throughout all contributions from artists Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP and an inspiration for a lot of, so called, “vaporware” music.

Originally released as a double album and conceived as a collection
of episodes destined to various tv sonorizations, “To-day’s sound” has
quickly become one of the most popular works by Piero Umiliani and it
certainly is one of the best ones composed in his career. Umiliani,
here on the job with Moog, Hammond and keyboards, is accompanied
by a good group of excellent and talented jazz players, like Franco
D’Andrea and Giovanni Tommaso (both in the Perigeo group),
trumpet player Oscar Valdambrini, guitar player Silvano Chimenti
from I Grès group, percussionist Ciro Cicco and many others.
With the original intent to offer radically different styles and
atmospheres, in order to promote the use of the tracks in movies and
tv series – in fact, the the psycho-funk “Open space” was used for
the opening credits of the movie “Baba Yaga” – “To-day’s sound” is
the perfect example of Umiliani’s incredible and varied talent, capable
of mastering diverse genres and sounds without losing his personal
touch. As stated on the cover: “Rock, rhythm and blues, beat,
underground, country, pop”, we can also add electronic music and
funk, in order to complete a sound palette that only very few other
composers had. It is hard to pick the best track in a record (a double
album to be specific ) so rich of gems, from the title track to “Caretera
panamericana” (with “virtuoso” Moog improvisations ), to “Bus stop”
and “Music on the road” , to end with the wonderful soul of “Green
valley”: it is better to enjoy Umiliani at his best!

Cinematic funk-porn-grooves from Jay Richford & Gary Steven a.k.a. Stefano Torossi.

A sweet groover from the Italian scene of the 70s – music that’s got a lush feel, but a funky one too – a great
mix of strings and electric instrumentation that rivals the best cop/crime work of the time – yet also has a nice
sexy feel too! There’s almost a blaxploitation vibe to the record at times – and although some instruments
solo at points, the real groove lies in the tight vamping of the orchestra – which hits all the right notes to really
send the whole thing soaring – often with a nice use of tone and color too!

Soundway Records present a new compilation of twenty rare and mostly unavailable tracks from the slick and sassy world of Nigerian pop music and club culture of the early 1980s.

Buoyed by an explosive oil boom and a return to democracy after a series of military dictatorships, Nigeria’s economy in the years of the early ‘80’s was mirrored by its recording industry as countless young artists and groups hit the airwaves and dancefloors of the capital and beyond.

It was a glossy, brash new form of pop music born out of ashes of late 1970s disco and funk and, just as in America, was the soundtrack to a new generation for whom money, style and flirtation trumped the overblown psychedelia of the previous decade. Eager to sound as American as possible with no hint of the fervor for afro-beat, afro-rock and afrocentric thinking that the 1970s had thrown up, a new generation of young artists and performers turned their backs on their cultural roots in music and sought a new kind of stardom and fame firmly connected to the glossy, snazzy world of the 1980s that was erupting in the USA and Europe.

Bosporus Bridges - A Wide Selection Of Turkish Jazz And Funk 1968-1978
LP | 2005 | EU (Twimo)
17,99 €*
Release:2005 / EU
Genre:Organic Grooves
The TWIMO Records project is the result of 6 years of traveling and record collecting in the meeting points between different music cultures; North Africa, the Bosporus and the far eastern parts of Europe. These two first two releases explores what happened when Western music styles such as modal jazz, bossa nova, fusion and funk met Arabic folk music, tone scales, instrumentation and rhythm structures in the late sixties and seventies in Turkey and Egypt. "Bosporus Bridges" is a compilation of turkish jazz, bossa, psych, fusion and funk compiled by Lasarus and Roskow. Four hundred years ago Turkey was the centre that connected Islamic, Byzantine and Persian music and even at this time Haydn and Mozart fused Persian tone scales and colour of rhytm into their compositions. Modern Turkish music history begins in 1923, when Turkey became a republic and the leader Kemal Atatopened the doors to the western world. Musicians in Turkey first adapted the waltz, but it was the tango from Paris that spread widely and became popular throughout the country. Youth in Istanbul, Izmir and Ankara started tuning the radio to everything that was happening in London and rock arrived in the mid 50s. The first turkish rock music came from armybands under the leadership of officers, but when The Shadows emerged on the scene, the popularity of rock exploded, since Turkish people was used to hearing instrumental music. In 1961 the magazine Ht arranged the competition Altin Mikrofon where the contestants had to arrange a traditional turkish tune or write a turkish song and perform it in a "western style" with electrical instruments. Altin Mikrofon is the godfather of all the turkish rock, psych, funk, fusion and jazz that came after. Western records by Black Sabbath, Ten Years After, Beatles, The Who, Jimmy Smith and James Brown got distribution in Istanbul and Ankara and the scene exploded during the years 61-78 with names like Erkin Koray, Mogollar, Baris Manco, Siluetler Mavi Iskalar,3 Hl, Selda, Ersen and Mogollar. The blending of the electric loud, arabic percussion, horn instruments and arabic vocals with western jazz and funk rhythm, makes the sound of this forgotten scene unique.

Originally released in Turkey 1973, Özkent's masterpiece (creation) of an all instrumental Turkish psychedelic funk album, filled with classic beats and breaks still inspires long time fans and first time listeners. The funky rhythms, hypnotic
percussions, and heavy break beats makes this a holy grail amongst DJs and music fans alike. Only a handful of copies from the original pressing are known to still exist making this reissue a welcome addition to any record collection. The concept is very complicated, futuristic and free from categorization. Traditional folk songs mixed with rock, jazz, blues, funk and psych. Ozkent took traditional Turkish folk songs and reconstructed them for the new "hip" generation.

A 1994 tape by Ghanaian musician Ata Kak called Obaa Sima is being reissued by Awesome Tapes From Africa.

The release is the culmination of a 13-year story for Awesome Tapes From Africa founder Brian Shimkovitz, who bought a cassette copy of Obaa Sima from a roadside stall in Cape Coast, Ghana, in 2002. The tape was the subject of the first post on his Awesome Tapes From Africa blog in 2006—the blog spawned a full record label in 2011.

Shimkovitz began searching for Ata Kat and says "Google and endless phone calls provided no leads." It was eventually discovered the musician, real name Yaw Atta-Owusu, had recorded Obaa Sima in Toronto before moving back to Ghana in 2006.

The restoration of the tape proved challenging. Only about 50 copies of the original tape were produced, and Atta-Owusu's master DAT had disintegrated, so the second-hand copy purchased by Shimkovitz was used as the source for the reissue.

Outro Tempo: Electronic And Contemporary Music From Brazil 1978-1992
2LP | 2017 | EU | Original (Music From Memory)
24,99 €*
Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Organic Grooves
For their first multi-artist compilation, Music From Memory take us on a trip to the heart of the Amazon rainforest. Outro Tempo: Electronic and Contemporary Music From Brazil, 1978-1992 is a double LP that explores the outer reaches of Brazilian music, where indigenous rhythms mix with synthesizers and where MPB mingles with drum computers. As Brazil faced the last years of its military dictatorship and transition to democracy, a generation of forward-thinking musicians developed an alternative vision of Brazilian music and culture. They embraced traditionally shunned electronic production methods and infused their music with elements of ambient, jazz-fusion, and minimalism. At the same time they referenced the musical forms and spirituality of indigenous tribes from the Amazon. The music they produced was a complex and mesmerising tapestry that vividly evoked Brazilian landscapes and simultaneously reached out to the world beyond its borders.

The product of extensive research, this compilation is a unique introduction to this visionary music and features many fresh discoveries in a country well trodden by record diggers. It gathers tracks from obscure albums that have for too long been neglected by even the most avid collectors of Brazilian music. It includes now highly sought after music by Andréa Daltro, Maria Rita, and Fernando Falcão, as well as unknown gems like those of Cinema, Carlinhos Santos, and Anno Luz. This is an essential release that reveals a broader spectrum of Brazilian music, striking a unique sonic signature that is full of innovation, experimentation, and beauty.

Compiled by John Gómez and featuring extensive liner notes, Outro Tempo showcases this overlooked corner in Brazil’s rich music history for the first time.

Krishnanda is an album in the truest sense of the word – a spiritual, psychedelic Brazilian masterpiece from start to finish – celebrated by everyone from Seu Jorge and Kassin to Floating Points, Madlib and DJ Nuts. These days, originals change hands for thousands of dollars.

Pedro dos Santos, born in Rio in 1919, was a percussionist virtuoso, composer and inventor of instruments that apparently included oddities such as the ‘Tamba’ (electrified bamboo drum) and the mouth berimbau whistle. Nicknamed Perdo ‘Sorongo’ after the rhythm he invented, that features throughout ‘Krishnanda’. A highly spiritual man who was regarded as a philosopher by many.

He worked with greats including Baden Powell, Elis Regina, Maria Bethany, Elza Soares, Sebastião Tapajós, Roberto Ribeiro, Milton Nascimento, Clara Nunes, Paul Simon and Arthur Verocai, playing on his legendary self-titled LP. In the same vein as Verocai and his self-titled LP, ‘Krishnanda’ was Pedro’s chance to shine with his own, and only, solo recording.

Krishnanda was produced by Hélcio Milito, the drummer of Tamba Trio, and arranged by conductor Joppa Lins, and originally released in 1968 on CBS (Brasil). Musically, the album touches folk, samba, afro-brazilian and psychedelia plus added effects, with a lyrical depth and diversity to match; themes including morality, perception, existence and ego.

Despite the genius of the record and the influence that it had on musicians at the time of release, it disappeared into obscurity. We first discovered the record around 2003, through a friend Julio Dui. Around that time Brazilian funk and bossa was the flavour of the day, so didn’t catch our ear immediately, however it continued improve with age and now we consider it to be one of the best albums ever made, regardless of genre or origin.

The Mr Bongo reissue is produced as a replica original LP / audio master by Ricardo Garcier at Magic Master (Rio de Janeiro) / artwork restored by Andrew Edwards, from the original copy borrowed from Julio Dui – thank you, sir!

Genre:Organic Grooves
Cameroonian musician Francis Bebey is truly one of a kind. He entered the music scene with his african compositions for classical guitar. He gave recitals while pursuing a career in journalism and then as an international civil servant. The same creative impulse also led him to write pop songs, and some of which (based on novels he had written) became big hits in Africa and in the french-speaking world. But few people know that in the 1970s, Francis Bebey delved into electronic music. The first electronic keyboards, organs and drum machines offered him new possibilities of totally controlling his compositions. he embraced the technique of 'sound on sound' recording (recording several tracks, sequentially juxtaposed on the same tape). This new stage in his musical career included the production of several records ('savannah georgia,' 'new track', 'haiti'), rarities both for their creative explorations as well as their manifestations on vinyl. This was a particularly rich period for him, as he tested the limitless possibilities of the medium, and made use of surprising and novel instruments.

Toots & The Maytals' long and storied musical career spans all the way back to the dawn of ska. The group are not only key figures in the development reggae, they were among the first to utilize the word in a song title which lead to the popularization of the very term reggae. In The Dark is the group’s second internationally released full length, the follow up to Funky Kingston. Like Funky Kingston, this release is in the pantheon of the greatest reggae albums of all time. Sure, that’s not an official list, but you know it when you hear it. In addition to stand out cuts like the James Brown influenced “54-46 Was My Number” that had previously been issued as singles the group recorded all new material at Dynamic Sounds Studios in Kingston. One of those cuts is perhaps the most unique reggae covers of an American hit record. Reggae already had a storied history of Jamaican artist covering American R&B hits. But Toots & The Maytals went where others hadn’t with a cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” If you’re only familiar with the original, well let’s just say Toots Hibbert’s beyond soulful vocals may make you forget you ever heard that other version of the song. Reissued in a lovingly re-printed version of the original LP sleeve, Get On Down now presents a superb reissue of a legendary piece of music history.

Few artists enjoy a legacy that involves a re-engineering of the very genre in which they work. Lee Perry is such an artist. As a pioneer of dub reggae Perry viewed the mixing console as musical instrument in its own right. The influence of his revolutionary approach has been felt world-wide and into genres far beyond reggae. His 1976 effort, "Super Ape", is considered a masterpiece of this or any genre. Working with The Upstetters at his Black Ark studio, Perry created a sound with such a lasting appeal that The Rough Guide includes "Super Ape" as one of their 100 Essential Reggae releases.

Sven Libaek’s Inner Space is, simply put, one of the most legendary soundtrack recordings in the history of Australian music. Released in 1973, soundtracking a documentary series on underwater life by Ron & Valerie Taylor, it now stands proud as a key album of ‘underwater music’, one of the most rightly and righteously revered fields within soundtrack and library music circles. Endlessly inventive, gorgeously melodic, at times oceanic, at times amphibian, at other times in some mysterious pelagic zone, Inner Space sits proudly alongside such classic underwater OSTs and libraries as Egisto Macchi’s Fauna Marina, the Sonoton Underwater Music series, the Ittologia and Biologia Marina twin-set, and Danielle Patucchi’s Men Of The Sea, Alla Scoperti Del Mare and Uomini E Squali. Considered to be one of the unsung masters of Australian Film music, Sven Libaek composed for many Australian Films and TV series in 1960’s and 70’s. Inner Space is considered amongst his finest. Featuring the best Australian jazz musicians including Don Burrows and John Sangster, they masterfully range from the incidental to the improvisational as they create a whirlpool of sublime aquatic jazz exotica. Notably, in 2004 the soundtrack had a second lease on life when several tracks were used in the Wes Anderson film. ‘The life aquatic with Steve Zizzou’.

The group are not only key figures in the development reggae, they were among the first to utilize the word in a song title which lead to the popularization of the very term reggae. Among the numerous musical accomplishments of Frederick "Toots" Hibbert and his group was the song "Pressure Drop", which was released initially in 1970, but received widespread acclaim for its appearance in the soundtrack to the film

It's since been covered by The Clash, The Specials, The Selecter, Robert Palmer, and numerous others, has been rated by Rolling Stone as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and is credited with helping introduce reggae music to the world. Though originally released in 1970, the US wouldn't get to experience "Pressure Drop" until 1975, when it was released on the US version of their album "Funky Kingston", easily considered one of the strongest albums in Toots & The Maytals' catalog, not to mention one of the greatest in reggae history. Upon its release in the States it received massive critical applause (even warming the cold, icy heart of Robert Christgau) for its infectious melodies and rhythms on tracks like "Sailing On", "Time Tough", and the
eponymous title track, quirky Jamaica-infused covers of tracks by John Denver and Ike Turner, and of course the influential "Pressure Drop." Reissued in a lovingly re-printed version of the original LP sleeve, Get On Down now presents a superb reissue of a legendary piece of music history.

ROB was an enigmatic recording artist from Ghana who cut two albums for the legendary Essiebons label in 1977. Neither of these were big domestic hits at the time and have since become prized amongst collectors in recent years. The title track from this LP was always one of the most popular on the first Soundway release Ghana Soundz and over the years we have been asked many times to re-issue the LP in it’s entirety. A stranger, slower offering than his more dancefloor funk-laden and Spartan first LP, this record sees ROB in similar territory but with the tempo switched down and the introspection turned up.

ROB’s trademark horns dominate and are supplied by the Mag-2, an army band founded by leader Amponsah Rockson, who named it after the army unit the band played for – the “magnificent” second battalion. In 1977, Rob traveled to the coastal town of Takoradi in search of Mag-2, which had an entire section of its line-up dedicated to horns, with the intension of laying out his proposal to them. Luckily for Rob, the band took him up on it.

With religious overtones and a broody, slightly off-key atmosphere at points it’s certainly one of the stranger afro-funk records to come out of West Africa but with tracks like Loose up Yourself and Make it Fast, Make it Slow he nails it for sure.

Considering the incredibly wide range of styles adopted by Piero Umiliani during his career, it will come as no surprise for you to know that he also produced disco. At that time in Italy disco had still an exotic appeal and was considered apt to accompany a genre of movies that was at once erotic and comic. “Discomusic” is some sort of a white version of a sound that is inherently black, a unique record within Umiliani‘s discography. The track “Discomania” became popular as the closing theme of 90° Minuto, a famous Italian football TV show.

Holy Grail, originally out on Saturn & unissued since its original release is back into the limelight through Artyard Limited edition Heavy Weight LP with Screen-Printed Cover and inner liner notes.

As composer, bandleader, and full-time member of the Sun Ra Arkestra, Pat Patrick was a visionary musician whose singular contribution to the jazz tradition has not yet been fully recognised. As well holding down the baritone spot in the Arkestra for 35 years, Patrick played flute and alto, composed in both jazz and popular idioms, and was a widely respected musician, playing with Duke Ellington, Eric Dolphy, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, with whom he appeared on Africa/Brass. But he is best known for his crucial contributions to key Sun Ra recordings including Angels and Demons at Play, Jazz in Silhouette and Nubians of Plutonia, among dozens of others.

But as a bandleader, Patrick only released one LP - the almost mythical Sound Advice, recorded with his Baritone Saxophone Retinue, a unique gathering of baritone saxophone masters including Charles Davis and Rene Mclean. First issued in 1977 on Sun Ra's legendary Saturn Records imprint, Sound Advice is a deephued exploration of this special instrument, a lost masterpiece of Arkestrally-minded Ellingtonia where higher adepts of the lower cosmic tones are heard in rare conference.

Appeared in 1975 on the legendary Ultima Spiaggia label during the mature stage of the Italian underground scene, the only album of this Milanese band led by guitarist Marco Rossi looks like an experiment rather atypical of that period. The typical Jazz sound of formations such Perigeo or Napoli Centrale, leave here considerable field for improvisation on suggestions of extra European ethnic flavor, enhanced by the masterful rhythmic section (without drums) curated by the African percussionists Nick Eyok and Mohammed El Targhi. The result was a complex work and full of nuances, in which the spirit of the free-jam is excellent for synthesis of influences and visions. Refined guitar riffs reveals strong blues roots that can blend with the elements and moods of the most markedly spiritual and exotic free-jazz (Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane or Shepp), while when the winds are perfumed of the Middle East flow as distant echoes with ideas of tribal rhythmic that seems to draw both from the rhythms of the northern Sahara as from more Afro-beat rituals of Yoruba ancestry. In the background so persist a poetic of intercultural exchange that approaches the I.P. Son Group to parallels projects such as those made by Aktuala, Arica or John Berberian. Comes with a large format booklet.

Strut repress one of the all-time classic compilations of Afro-funk and Afrobeat for 2016, the first volume of the mighty Nigeria 70 series. Originally released in 2001, the album followed the death of Fela Kuti and a renewed interest in original Afrobeat among younger club-goers. Put together over a three-week trip to Lagos, it documented for the first time the explosive era when domestic bands fused traditional highlife and juju with funk, soul, rock and Disco.Alongside two cuts by Fela Kuti, Nigeria 70 shone the spotlight on the incredible musicianship of artists like Segun Bucknor, Joni Haastrup and his Monomono band, Orlando Julius, saxophonist Peter King, “Guitar Boy” Victor Uwaifo, Lijadu Sisters and quirky keyboard wizard William Onyeabor among many others. Spread over 3LPs, the original edition also included a one-hour audio documentary featuring exclusive interviews with many original musicians and industry figures from the ‘70s scene, narrated by Wunmi. As well as being a valuable document of an under-rated era, Nigeria 70 was one of the first crossover albums to dig deep into the African music archives and effectively market the music to a new online audience hungry for rare grooves and unique dancefloor sounds. Since Nigeria 70, this market has widened hugely with labels like Soundway, Analog Africa and Hot Casa all working tirelessly to document rare African beats. This new pressing of the Nigeria 70 3LP set is limited to 500 copies and features the full CD version and CD audio documentary as a bonus within the package. Full artwork is also featured including John Armstrong’s extensive sleeve note history alongside rare photos. Limited new 15th Anniversary repress of classic Afro-funk and Afrobeat collection, 500 copies only Definitive format: 3LP set including 2CD version and 1CD audio documentary as bonus one of the most influential of all recent African music collections which helped spawn a new market for African rare grooves album fully remastered for this reissue.

A stupendous blend of scintillating highlife, smoking Fela and spaced-out, funkdafied Black Jazz, from 1975 — Mari Affiong Usuah from Oron town, by way of Calabar in southeastern Nigeria, fronting a knockout band led by Daniel ‘Satch’ Asuquo from the Atomic 8 (and formerly of Bobby Benson’s orchestra). The Afrofunk cuts are especially killer — with James Brown just percolating through by the end — but it’s a stunning, magnificent album, through and through. Beautifully sleeved, too, with excellent notes by Uchenna from Comb & Razor. ‘Gob, smacked,’ he recalls, about his first listen; ‘mind, blown’.

There is no doubt about it, Funkadelic’s 1971 masterpiece is a classic recording. Ignored for years, it is now considered to be one of the all-time greats; an intoxicating mix of funk, soul and rock that showcased a group who were unlike any others at the time.

The album’s critical reputation rests on its title track. An extended instrumental, Eddie Hazel lays down more than 10 minutes of astounding improvisation, over a simple rhythm section. It is said that the album was recorded after the band had taken some yellow sunshine acid, and George then asked Eddie to play as if he had just heard that his mother had died, and then as if he had heard that she was in fact still alive. The resultant joyous release makes for one of the most exhilarating listening experiences that one could wish for.

However this is more than simply a one track album. There are shorter more direct songs such as ‘Hit It And Quit It’ and ‘Can You Get To That’ that give a sense of the pop sensibilities that lie behind all the weirdness. It is a measure of bandleader George Clinton’s production skills that he is able to successfully integrate these numbers with the proto heavy-metal of ‘Super Stupid’ or the apocalyptic ‘Wars Of Armageddon’.

Soundway Records present Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & ‘80s - a treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings from East Africa. Spread out over two CDs and one triple LP, Kenya Special is accompanied by detailed liner notes, original artwork and photographs.

It follows on from Soundway’s much acclaimed African ‘Special’ series that to date has focused on the highlife and afrobeat output from 1970s Nigeria and Ghana. Kenya Special is a collection of 32 recordings (most of which were only ever released on small-run 45rpm 7" singles) that stand out as being different or unique as well as some classic genre standards. From Kikuyu language ‘liquid soul’, Luo benga and Swahili afrobeat to genre-bending Congolese and Tanzanian tracks recorded in Nairobi, Kenya Special sees Soundway yet again taking the less trodden path. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation highlighting how diverse the music scene in Kenya was at the time.

In 1970s Kenya the two threads of rumba and benga loosely dominated the music scene. Benga quickly became Kenya’s unique contribution to afro-pop; spreading like wildfire through the interior countryside with it’s fast, 4/4 machine-gun beat and intricate electric guitar layers. The Congolese take on Afro-Cuban rumba was introduced by touring bands many of whom settled in East Africa - influencing bands from Kenya and Tanzania to come up with their own take on this popular style. Alongside these styles were small ensembles and hotel-sponsored bands, playing a blend of music that often included rock ‘n’ roll riffs, elements of ‘afro’ music (influenced by West African musicians like Fela Kuti), and multiple other combinations from South African and Zambian guitar styles to disco, funk and Swahili coastal rhythms like chakacha.

Painstakingly compiled, assembled and researched over two years by a team of five people from five countries (Kenya included), Kenya Special is a collection that looks beyond the mainstream and brings new life and recognition to some little known gems and forgotten classics of Kenya’s past.

Dark, hypnotic, tripping nyabinghi from 1974.

Led by Ras Michael over four extended excursions, the music is organic, sublime and expansive, grounation-drums and bass heavy (with no rhythm guitar, rather Willie Lindo brilliantly improvising a kind of dazed, harmolodic blues).

Lloyd Charmers and Federal engineer George Raymond stayed up all night after the session, to mix the recording, opening out the enraptured mood into echoing space, adding sparse, startling effects to the keyboards.

At no cost to its deep spirituality, this is the closest reggae comes to psychedelia.

One of Jamaica’s most highly-rated vocalists, Alton Ellis made an incredible contribution to the island’s popular music. Blessed with a particularly emotive voice that brings shivers to the spine whether singing original material or cover tunes, Ellis was born and raised in Trench Town, the west Kingston ghetto area that gave rise to Bob Marley and the Wailers and countless other singers. Ellis and singing partner Eddie Parkins hit big in 1961 with the ballad ‘Muriel’ for Coxsone Dodd, and after Parkins moved to the USA, Ellis teamed briefly with John Holt, and then began fronting the Flames harmony group. He excelled in the rock steady style, christening the genre with ‘Rock Steady’ and ‘I Have Got A Date,’ bouncing between Studio One and Treasure Isle for a number of years. From 1971, he spent increasing period in London, but continued to record hits in Jamaica for various producers. The 1979 release Love To Share was arranged by the great Studio One keyboardist, Jackie Mittoo, who co-produced the album with Junior Lincoln, founder of the London-based Bamboo label; the disc straddles the line between lover’s rock and roots reggae, remaining a lesser-known classic.

In 1971 two songs were released in Trinidad & Tobago that represented completely new directions in the musical and lyrical expression of Trinidad's place in the diaspora, Indian on one hand and African on the other. Nanny & Nana by Sundar Popo and “Blow 'Way” by Lancelot Layne were revolutionary and ground breaking and spawned two distinctly new genres in Trinidad & Tobago music – Chutney music in the case of Sundar Popo and Rapso, in Lance's case. Brother Resistance calls Lancelot Layne the father of Rapso music.
During the early 1970s Lance recorded at least a dozen startlingly original songs including “Blow 'Wa”y, “Afro'Dadian”, “Bringing' Off”, “Dat Is Horros” and “Kaiso For Mout' Band”. Each one expanding his talent for musical arrangements and dramatic counterpoint with chorus responses and vocal variation. He enlisted musicians, each exciting and pioneering in their own right, breaking ground in the post 1970 cultural revolution: calypso/jazz pianist, Clive Zanda; composer, guitarist, singer and flautist, Andre Tanker; Mau Mau Drummers including the young Jah Jah Onilu, Mansa Musa Drummers; vocalists, including Ann Marie Innis and Ella Andall.
The result is exciting, confident and musically ground-breaking. Until his death in 1990 he kept commenting and educating T&T'ssociety with songs like Get Off The Radio, Kamboulay, Jambalasie Dance and Strike Squad.
This release is pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl and contains an additional 45RPM single. Everything is housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with 20-page booklet (8.2” x 8.2”) with extensive liner notes by Lancelot's daughter, Niasha Layne-Forde, and Christopher Laird. Cover and booklet artwork were created by famous Scottish painter, Peter Doig, one of the most renowned living figurative painters who settled in Trinidad since 2002.

Fantastic and rare Soul-Jazz album recorded in Adelaide (Australia) in 1976. Originally pressed and released on Crest records and fully licensed by the Hot Casa team to reissue it on a deluxe 180g vinyl.
Sue Barker is a Jazz singer from the 70s – and one who isn't afraid of picking up a bit of Soul. Most of the album features covers from Duke Ellington to Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield or even James Brown!
Actually this is more than just a vocal album, there’s a lot of space for instrumental solo from her top Adelaide musicians team. She gets hip small combo of seven musicians backing that match all the right inflections in her vocals – jazzy when needed, more southern Soul at other points – often with more of a 60s acoustic mode than the sorts of more-electric and groovy instrumentation others singers of the time were using. Arrangements are by Grahame Conlon, the guitarist in the group.
A classic Soul-Jazz album finally available to everybody…

This amazing still unheard monster album crosses many styles, from synth music merged with Bel-Air and Gwo Ka, cosmic Reggae, electronic proto Disco Zouk and spacey Jazz Funk. The whole album is amazing and will please many collectors, way ahead on its time. This is the first release of the new comer label Granit Records. French West Indies continue to deliver some obscure gems and this one, after a long waiting in the dust and anonymity, resurfaces. This private press was originally conceived in 1982, in a context where many French Caribbean musicians were searching for their own style and fusing traditional heritage (Gwo-Ka, Bel Air, and Biguine) and synthetic music. Claude Rodap's “Syn-Ka” sums it all up. The LP comes with an insert in French, English and Japanese.
