Release:1957 / EU – Reissue

Who hasn't got an ancient, worn-out copy of "The Clown" on his shelf, with a tatty cover and torn inner sleeve? Or maybe one of the rare re-releases made of cheap, thin vinyl with dreadful graphic art? And if you haven't heard this gem for a long time, despite the flood of Mingus LPs, CDs and downloads on the market, then you really should seize this opportunity to do so. "The Clown" was, and still is, an absolute must-have for every jazz collector. The small ensemble, only five musicians, came into the New York Atlantic Records studio in March 1957 to record music exclusively composed by the double bassist. Over the next 15 years, three of them were to be heard in numerous concerts with other ensembles. But the original recordings on this LP were the most deeply concentrated, the most versatile, and quite simply the best of all. The more so because the label attached great importance to optimal studio conditions and allowed the instrumentalists plenty of time to make the recordings.
In the present new release, "The Clown" can be enjoyed to the full from the very first note of "Haitian Fight Song" up until the words »William Morris Sends Regrets« in the title work.

Recording: Februay and March 1957 in New York City by Tom Dowd and Larry Hiller in mono

Genre:Organic Grooves
Charles Mingus is usually known for his wild, soulful and avant-garde compositions. "East Coasting" is mellow by comparison, but it still cooks on a musical level. The Mingus touches are there; the trombone, drummer Danny Richmond and of course the dark emotional undercurrent looms large, too. The personnel are all Mingus regulars, except for pianist Bill Evans, who would not be described as 'soulful' in the traditional sense, but his introverted and sensitive style works well with Mingus's music. His playing on "West Coast Ghost" (the album's stand-out track) and "Celia" are two examples of Evans' ability to understand an artist's musical vision and play accordingly in his own beautifully original style.?"East Coasting" sounds like the prototypical 1950s jazz recording. It's something one would hear in an attic converted to a bedroom where an artist or lonely soul might live. It's what a lot of people might believe Jazz would or should sound like. Highly recommended to Jazz lovers and perhaps more importantly to young people who have just been blown away by Kerouac's novel "On The Road" and have become interested in exploring Jazz. "East Coasting" will allow them to get a taste of lost creative America.

Recording: August 1957 in New York City

For the first time on vinyl, Charles Mingus's great score for the legendary 1959 directorial debut of John Cassavetes, Shadows. Much has been said about the controversial relationship between these two masters. "The score encapsulates Cassavetes' and Mingus's unique approaches to both improvisation and composition in their respective media, illuminating the oppositional nature of jazz to mainstream cultural production and the underbelly of race relations in 1950's America" --Ross Lipman

The great Bassist and band leader Charles Mingus cut some of his most exciting and rewarding recordings in 1960. Taped during the apex of Mingus’ creativity, shortly after masterstroke Mingus Ah Um, just before his brilliant Oh Yeah, and in the same year as the classic Blues & Roots, this incredible session showcase such stars as Eric Dolphy, Roy Eldridge, and Tommy Flanagan. Mingus' arrangements are, as always, top notch with an unparalleled understanding of space and melody, and the playing is without doubt up to his standards. Mingus is one of the greatest jazz minds of the 20th Century and these sessions are another fine example of his genius.

Created in 1952 by bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach, Debut label was a first attempt by Jazz musicians to get their music recorded and released under their own control. A short lived experiment (1952-1957) that produced some memorable works. The vibrant spirit of Mingus lives through this great selection of rare Debut recordings with himself as leader of two different line up (quintet / octet) and as bassist of the Hank Jones trio and the Thad Jones quintet.

For this legendary Town Hall Concert recorded on October 12, 1962, the great jazz composer and bassist Charles Mingus brought together an amazing lineup spanning the totality of the nation’s jazz scene with such luminaries as Eric Dolphy, Buddy Collette, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Pepper Adams, Jaki Byard, Grady Tate, and more. Brought together to perform new Mingus compositions for the first time in public, the recording was initially considered weak due to limited rehearsal time but the years have been kind to this recording and it’s a fantastic set of Mingus compositions, including the powerful “Freedom” which rivals the works on Mingus Ah-Um for its strength of purpose and message, in a similar vein to Max Roach’s legendary We Insist! album. Mingus is one of the most important figures in 20th Century music and this live recording documents his compositional and arranging prowess as well as sheer swinging joy. Essential.

With Clifford Jordan on tenor, John Handy on alto, Jane Getz on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums, Charles Mingus went into San Francisco and whipped up a storm. This LP contains two compositions over 23-minutes each: “New Fables” and “Meditation (For A Pair Of Wire Cutters).” “New Fables” features a ten-minute solo from Jordan, some fine ensemble work, and a solo encounter from Handy. Mingus changes the mood as he sees fit, and one would describe these different styles as avant-garde (in 1964), blues, flamenco, and straight-ahead jazz. Handy’s work is stirring, deeply imaginative, technically thrilling, and a harbinger of what was to come the following year at Monterey. In “Meditations” Mingus bowing the bass in the cello range with that certain sad quality, Jane Getz playing loose, free, and exciting, much as she does today, and a moment where Mingus joins Getz for a fourhanded piano romp. The piece is a flowing ballad, but there are constant changes throughout(...) (allaboutjazz)
