The radical discovery by Amir Abdullah of 5 two-trackmaster tapes in the care of Hermine Brooks – widow ofinnovative Detroit drummer Roy Brooks – of the CharlesMingus Quintet recorded live in Detroit at Strata ConcertGallery is cause for some serious celebration. These electrifying recordings took place during Mingus’week-long residency in February 1973. They werebroadcast live by drummer/producer and broadcasterRobert “Bud” Spangler for WDET FM – a public radiostation dedicated to jazz – from Kenny and BarbaraCox’s multi-purpose home for Strata Records at 46Selden. Entrance to the gig was $5 dollars in advanceand $6 on the door.By the early Seventies Mingus’ militant musings, volatilecharacter and hugely innovative musical offerings hadalready earned him global notoriety. He’d played withthe Bird, Dizzy, Max Roach, Duke Ellington and hadreleased universally acclaimed albums as a leader like‘Blues & Roots’, Oh Yeah’ and ‘Black Saint & The SinnerLady’. This gig – one of a Jazz In Detroit series that alsoincluded Keith Jarrett, Tribe and Herbie Hancock – tookplace a few months after the release of Mingus’ “thirdstream” masterpiece ‘Let My Children Hear Music’.The music on these tapes is blazing. According to thelate Roy Brooks, the band – which included himself andfellow Detroit trumpeter Joe Gardner - had not longreturned from playing two tours in Europe. Fresh to thequintet was stellar pianist Don Pullen and listening tothese recordings Pullen’s church-driven power, bluessensibility and harmonic sophistication perfectlycomplements the bassist’s own vision. On tenorsaxophone we have the soulful and innovative JohnStubblefield. Like Pullen he was a recent recruit.Unfortunately, the saxophonist’s time with Minguslasted a mere 5 months: “I got in a fight with Mingusand I shouldn't have done that. After that, I couldn't getarrested in New York." Ironically, when Sue Mingusformed the Mingus Big Band in 1992, to perpetuate herhusband's legacy, Stubblefield emerged as a talismanicpresence in the ensemble until he passed in 2005.Thanks to BBE, 180 Proof Records and Strata Recordswe can now tune in to WDET-FM and transportourselves back to Detroit ’73, and get a taste of thefurious energy and compositional sophistication of aunique and modern master at work in the most intimateof settings.

1956's Pithecanthropus Erectus is the Charles Mingus record where he really begins to take hold of his own personal vision of how jazz music could look. After cutting his teeth on the L.A. scene and touring with Louis Armstrong and Lionel Hampton, Mingus moved to New York, began Debut Records with Max Roach, and entered into the most productive and creative decade of his career. This album is held in the same esteem as Mingus Ah-Um and The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady among jazz aficionados, and one need listen no further than the 10 minute title track, a tone poem about the rise and fall of man which includes one of the earliest free jazz / improvisation segments put to tape. Absolutely essential jazz from the late great Charles Mingus on Wax Love.

Who hasn't got an ancient, worn-out copy of "The Clown" on his shelf, with a tatty cover and torn inner sleeve? Or maybe one of the rare re-releases made of cheap, thin vinyl with dreadful graphic art? And if you haven't heard this gem for a long time, despite the flood of Mingus LPs, CDs and downloads on the market, then you really should seize this opportunity to do so. "The Clown" was, and still is, an absolute must-have for every jazz collector. The small ensemble, only five musicians, came into the New York Atlantic Records studio in March 1957 to record music exclusively composed by the double bassist. Over the next 15 years, three of them were to be heard in numerous concerts with other ensembles. But the original recordings on this LP were the most deeply concentrated, the most versatile, and quite simply the best of all. The more so because the label attached great importance to optimal studio conditions and allowed the instrumentalists plenty of time to make the recordings. In the present new release, "The Clown" can be enjoyed to the full from the very first note of "Haitian Fight Song" up until the words »William Morris Sends Regrets« in the title work.Recording: Februay and March 1957 in New York City by Tom Dowd and Larry Hiller in monoProduction: Nesuhi Ertegün

Charles Mingus is usually known for his wild, soulful and avant-garde compositions. "East Coasting" is mellow by comparison, but it still cooks on a musical level. The Mingus touches are there; the trombone, drummer Danny Richmond and of course the dark emotional undercurrent looms large, too. The personnel are all Mingus regulars, except for pianist Bill Evans, who would not be described as 'soulful' in the traditional sense, but his introverted and sensitive style works well with Mingus's music. His playing on "West Coast Ghost" (the album's stand-out track) and "Celia" are two examples of Evans' ability to understand an artist's musical vision and play accordingly in his own beautifully original style.?"East Coasting" sounds like the prototypical 1950s jazz recording. It's something one would hear in an attic converted to a bedroom where an artist or lonely soul might live. It's what a lot of people might believe Jazz would or should sound like. Highly recommended to Jazz lovers and perhaps more importantly to young people who have just been blown away by Kerouac's novel "On The Road" and have become interested in exploring Jazz. "East Coasting" will allow them to get a taste of lost creative America. Recording: August 1957 in New York City
