Nôze are making a very welcome return to Circus Company with their fifth album Come With Us, and once again the pairing of Nicolas Sfintescu and Ezechiel Pailhes has yielded a collection of captivating and curious songs that could only come from the unique sound world they inhabit. As has been evident throughout their career from their early experimental house days through to the more recent song-based material for Get Physical, the Parisian duo have always moved on from album to album, maturing their sound to deliver a new experience for themselves and their listeners every time.

For a long time before the success of Nôze led him to discover the rest of the world, Ezechiel Pailhès remained a prophet in: his country. For a long time as well, he worked on creating what became his first solo album, waiting for the right moment when he could no longer contain all the melodies that populate this 14-leg epic. A voyage in a free world, where creation knows no formal constraints, where everything mutates according to the determined inspiration of the moment. Transforming the original pieces without knowing in advance how they will end up, disguising the instruments so that they are mistaken for others, nothing frightens this intrepid sailor whose ship is nevertheless securely moored at home, Ezechiel composes and plays at home in Paris. Sole master on board, the tinkerer illusionist prepares his piano with mechanic’s tools (scotch tape, rubber, percussion, wooden claves adrift over the strings), obtaining instruments that do not sound where we expect them. This adventure is, he says, a fiction he wants to believe in.The result is equal to the creator and his character. 14 captivating melodies like siren songs, sometimes dressed in a simple lala or lyrics by David Lafore, 14 ports of call offering a sweetness that is at times extremely melancholy, 14 pieces whose implacable refrains take root the first time you listen to them. This is indeed a divine crossing people with wide-ranging references (Serge Regianni, D'Angelo, Bernard Hermann, Timber Timbre, Stevie Wonder but also Henri Duparc, Moondog, Keith Jarett or Tony Benett ) that we are invited to share with Ezechiel whose career as a pianist has evolved on the stages where he has been performing for years as a duo with Nicolas Sfint.

Following Dani Siciliano’s welcome return to the spotlight with her self-titled LP, Circus Company is proud to present a collection of remixes from artists close to the label and Dani herself, framing her intimate songs in a new, dancefloor-ready context. David Okumu is best known as the frontman for The Invisible, but when he’s not leading the band he can be found lending his vocal, instrumental and production talents to a host of projects. Here he lends a deft touch to the album’s closer “Sincerely”, with a sound that combines modern electronica production with emotive synth lines and a light touch of ‘80s funk. Sturm & Drang is a new studio venture from dOP’s own Damien Vandesande and Fabien Leseure, specially formed for this remix of “Gone Are Those Days”. Working around a tight house groove, the duo lay down warm analogue synth tones underneath Dani’s vocals and build up a sizzling club track that maintains the spirit of the original. British outfit Party Nails, affiliated to The 2 Bears and God Colony amongst other projects, take to “Dragons” with a sense of urgency that turns the track into a taut, peak time workout loaded with tension. Dani’s impassioned delivery sits atop the insistent drums and weighty bass as a foil to the hard edges of the production, making for an emotive result that harkens back to house classics. Circus Company’s prolific soul maverick Dave Aju steps up to round the record out with a typically flamboyant version of “Gone Are Those Days” that reflects his own exploration of tougher machine-powered rhythms of late.

Beautiful piano melodies, ballads drawing their inspiration from jazz, classical music and cinematic imagery, hummed choruses, a mood at the crossroad of nostalgia and reverie, instruments with uncanny timbre and charm, chiseled percussions, added to a subtle electronic production, this is the recipe for Tout Va Bien, the second solo album by French composer Ezechiel Pailhès. All this is reflected in the opening track, River Day, which begins with “prepared piano” sounds (a technique mastered by Ezechiel, which consists in placing different objects on the strings of the piano, to create singular percussive notes). This deliberately mysterious and poetic introduction, supported by light electronic effects, is soon combined with a light beat, organ chords and vocalisations by the artist, which gradually transform the track into a ritornello, with both nostalgic and lighthearted tones. As the artist states it: “We could describe this type of emotion as a kind of endearing nostalgia, close to saudade,” i.e. the Portuguese term expressing the idea of a light melancholy stripped of its sickly aspect, or a “haunted craving” as the singer and composer Pierre Barouh nicely put it. “This feeling comes naturally to me when I write. Generally, in my music, I seek a form of soothing, of eternity even, (without meaning to sound pretentious). This is something I encounter in classical music, which is what I listen to most.” Even if he defines himself as a “jolly fellow” (which is confirmed by the music and reputation of his electro-pop duo Nôze), when chatting to him, he comes across as quite gentle and stellar, just like this collection of eleven tracks that he composed “in autarky”, en

The maverick maestro from the Bay Dave Aju is back with his Circus family here with an incredible new release. Based on stripped-down hardware sessions rocking just a Roland TR-909 and SH-101, Aju once again proves that no sound set need be limited in itself and along with the addition of one microphone for his inimitable soulful voice, creates one of his strongest and most imaginative releases to date, the 10101 EP. A multiple homage to the 101 freeway that spans his native Golden State and the numeric classic analog boxes used vs digital binary to process them, the four rich tracks offer the best of both worlds and cover all the bases of Mr Aju’s musical multiverse. “Low Dive” starts things on a deep heads-down dance floor tip where rising synth lines soar over a blast of shuffling drums and percussion for a rocksolid DJs delight. “Always Never” comes next with pure Aju magic, equal parts song and track, an ear worm of a chorus, and full of sunny West Coast electro influences all the way through. On the flip “Sides” may very well be one of Aju’s most intense transmissions ever, with a sublime and seemingly endless build-up of dark pads, driving, shifting rhythms, and voodoo vocals that will detonate many a peak-hour sound system guaranteed. Aju then tastefully finishes with the cool psychedelic mid-tempo bump of “Tell Her Why” which harks back to his hip-hop roots and wraps up the vibe and elements of the whole EP perfectly. Welcome back with a bang brother Aju!
Todd Sines - Blowing

Release:2016 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
A legend to those who know, Todd Sines makes his first appearance on Circus Company in a fit of sharp-edged, wildly expressive house music that harks back to the unhinged early days of the label. Sines has a career that stretches back to the early 9s, having released lauded records under the .xtrak moniker on Peacefrog and 7th City amongst other legendary labels. Under his own name he has delivered equally timeless material on Planet E, Frankie and Morris Audio, but still this summary barely scratches the surface of an artist with a groove so distinctive it would futile to attempt an imitation. A key facet of Sines' material is his ability to match a vivid, futuristic sound palette with a very human soul, and this is no more apparent than on Blowing. The title track alone throws down a challenge to any selector as a bugging line in off-kilter drums and tweaked out synth lines rub up against an utterly soulful vocal turn from Robert Owens in a true definition of 21st century funk. Originally written by Charles Webster, Sines has taken the foundations of the track and twisted it into a shape all of his own. Elsewhere the mood takes a deeper turn, as "Deserted”, "Cave” and "Recover” all plunge into a vision of deep house that retains the emotion while pushing the rhythms into exciting, psychedelic new territory. Even if the tracks go very far out indeed, there's always a tangible beat to hold on to, testing the nerve of the play-it-safe DJ while giving musical explorers music as accessible as it is challenging. While there may be shards of experimentation flying out of these tracks at every angle, the warmth in between the unusual shapes makes Sines' music so very easy on the airs in the same breath.

Dani Siciliano's latest album is self-titled for a reason; it represents a personal statement crafted by Dani's own hand - feeding off her accomplished past in experimental pop and electronica and reaching to new tones and timbres in a celebration of musical liberation. Culminating eight years of songwriting, production research and sonic exploration, Circus Company is proud to present Dani Siciliano's third solo album. Following her two previous solo LPs Likes…(2004) and Slappers(2007), Dani decided to focus on crafting as much of the album by herself as possible, working with just a few select musicians to round out her creative vision. As ever her captivating voice remains centre stage, and you can hear echoes of her earlier work with the likes of Herbert, The Soft Pink Truth, and Brooks tucked away amongst the folds of diverse instrumentation, but this is a record that sounds very much like its own beast. It's an album of love and unabashed soul that reaches enthusiastically to all the sounds that hold the greatest appeal to Dani. What strikes most about her latest creation is the way the production instinctively frames the narrative of her lyrics, neatly demonstrating the unfettered vision she has been able to realise on this project. New Release Information It's the balance of the unusual and the immediate that make this such perfect pop music and sits neatly amongst Circus Company's brooding musicianship of Nôze's recent Come With Us LP (on which Dani features), Nicolas Jaar and the ever-blurring lines between the avant-garde history of the label and its broad contemporary outlook.

To anyone with even a passing interest in the weirder end of good-time party-ready house music, Freaks should need little introduction. Luke Solomon and Justin Harris have been keeping our preferred kind of dancefloor vibrating to the cheekiest manifestations of house music since the mid- 90s, never letting up and moving in the same oscillations as the good ship Circus Company. From first emerging on Phono through to setting up their Music For Freaks label, stopping by Playhouse, Wash House and Rebirth amongst countless other labels along the way, the UK duo have constantly given the traditions of house music a tickle in the ribs without losing that fundamental funk that makes a record great to dance to. We were thrilled to welcome Luke and Justin to remix Dave Aju's “Nu Threads” at the end of last year, and now we follow up on that connection with a special EP of gems from the extensive Freaks archives. On “Shrunken Heads (One Pro Mix)” the rock solid foundations of filter house music collide with flamboyant synth noodlings for a truly cosmic end result, while “Absolut Zero” finds solace in a slower, deeper groove peppered with oddball effects tweaking and disembodied vocal samples. Heading further into loose-fit, slippery territory, “Funk You (Who Do You Trust Dub)” lets soulful sample licks wriggle and writhe through a decidedly laid-back atmosphere that shows off the range Freaks have always sported in their output since day one. In many ways this coming together of Circus Company and Freaks feels like a logical development for two bastions of the oddball house music community, not to mention a great opportunity to hear tracks that otherwise might never have seen the light of day.

‘Black Frames’ is a creation from two major life transitions for Dave Aju, namely the end of a long-term relationship combined with a move away from his home town of San Francisco. Punctuated with philosophical statements and political punches, the former MC proves he isn’t afraid to use his voice and production skills to unite music and passion with his latest album on Circus Company.

After a string of successful collaborations and remixes - including an ace one one of ours, Nicolas Jaar's 'Space Is Only Noise', we are delighted to present Dave Aju's sophomore album, Heirlooms. It's always exciting to hear new music from Mr. Aju, as he consistently offers a fresh approach to the usual dance music formulas with an undeniable sense of soul and singular artistry. This is especially true on his new album, where Aju has really outdone himself with his most diverse, expressive, and personal work to date. Crafted with vintage recordings and instruments inherited from his late father, Aju taps into his roots and musical background more than ever on Heirlooms, taking us on a ten-song journey through past and present influences and a variety of moods, from proper heartfelt tributes to spaced-out bliss and straight-up funk. Dave Aju uses his distinctive voice, a fixture in his engaging live performances and DJ sets, in various ways throughout the album - from inspired songwriting in the uplifting cosmic opener 'Rise' and the beautiful end of 'Revealing', to memorable character lines in the raw deep house cut 'Away Away' and soaring choral notes on the bass-heavy beatdown vibe of 'Until Then'. Plenty of collaborators also appear on the album, including The Invisible Art Trio who bring the same p-funk-meets-free-jazz voodoo on the hypnotic 'To Be Free' that made their previous track 'Be Like The Sun' such a treat. Some fellow Circus freaks also join in as Jaw from dOP finds himself co-conducting vocals on the boogie train of 'Caller No.7' and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts lends a hand on the skins for the party-starting ode to tequila "Ms Reposado."
