“For me Myopia is an album about trust and doubt. Can you trust yourself or not? Can you trust your own judgments? Can you trust that you will do the right thing? Can you trust your instincts and what you are feeling? Or are your feelings skewed?” - Obel. For almost a decade, Agnes Obel has been one of the most independent and original artists in contemporary music. Now Obel has returned with new music, releasing the enchanting single ‘Island of Doom’, ahead of the release of her highly anticipated new album ‘Myopia’ – released through Deutsche Grammophon, Universal Music Group’s prestigious Yellow Label, and Blue Note in North America, out on February 21st 2020. Following the same principles as her previous albums (Philharmonics, Aventine and Citizen Of Glass), which Obel completed as a one-women project in her own Berlin home studio). Obel has been under self-imposed creative isolation with the removal of all outside influences and distraction in the writing, recording and mixing process. “The albums I’ve worked on have all required that I build a bubble of some kind in which everything becomes about the album.” “For me the production is intertwined with the lyrics and story behind the songs” says Obel. This is precisely what
makes her music so compelling and the same is true with Myopia. “Paradoxically, for me I need to create my own myopia to make music.” Obel was experimenting with techniques of recording processing, warping and pitching down vocals, strings, piano, celesta and lutheal piano. Finding ways to melt these elements together to become one and twisting them in a way that you feel at home within the sound Obel conjures throughout the record. Although Obel’s music can often curate a monologue of modern day dystopian-esque news stories that we are all now subject to. The contents of ‘Island of Doom’ are much more personal, she explains: “the song is made up of pitched down piano and cello pizzicato and vocals, all choirs are pitched down and up… In my experience when someone close to you dies it is simply impossible to comprehend that you can’t ever talk to them or reach them somehow ever again. They are in many ways still alive because in your consciousness nothing has changed, they’re still there with everyone else you know.”

Near the end of the old millennium, someone once rapped, "Being futuristic these days means being futuristic on your own terms," which is entirely fitting when said rapper records an album of solo piano instrumentals. (Perhaps less instructive is what said rapper went on to say: "Being futuristic means loving worms, saving your sperm, wearing your pubes in a perm.") The former Chilly Gonzales has a hint of Gershwin in his playing, an urbane, contemplative take on the blues that sometime turns into a wry smile. He also has a hint of Satie, the spare and haunted sound of a music box turning slowly to a halt as it comes to the end of its wind. But what he also has is entirely his own, which not only makes this the best album of solo piano instrumentals by a rapper extant but also one of the finest solo piano albums not by a jazz or classical performer. Obviously, there's a duality to any man who lit up stages with Peaches but also played with and produced Jane Birkin and Charles Aznavour, but Solo Piano is a disarmingly wonderful record. - allmusic.com

A product of living in an age where texture can make you dance, and popular music innovates for an audience with ears wide open' NPR
Nearly two years have passed since Niklas Paschburg presented his critically acclaimed debut album 'Oceanic' in February 2018. Niklas' musical ideas have crystalized and become cogent through a combination of extensive live performance - playing over 100 shows in the last two years - and experimentation in his Berlin Studio.
Written between 2018 - 19, his second album 'Svalbard' will be released in February 2020 via 7K!.
Niklas' use of the piano; electronics (synth and computer) and his Grandfather's piano accordion allow him to communicate via a number of musical traditions and languages. This versatility has allowed him to work on a variety of projects ranging from an inspired reinterpretation of Bach's Preludes in C Minor ("Blooming"), to well received remixes for pop artists such as RY X and Asgeir.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Violin Concertos BWV 1041 and 1042, Double Concerto BWV 1043 - Yehudi Menuhin, Christian Ferras (v) | Festival Chamber Orchestra / Robert Masters Chamber Orchestra | Yehudi Menuhin (cond)

When sound recordings of important works from the early years of stereophony still remain significant to this day, then one really ought to investigate the audible reasons for their durability. Hereby, it is unnecessary to comment on the importance of Bach’s masterworks for violin and orchestra. Rather more, the music lover is invited to listen to the passionately fervent performer Yehudi Menuhin. Just how the soloist and Festival Chamber Orchestra succeed in transforming the score into unreservedly impressive music is absolutely unique. Menuhin’s violin sings out bright and clear, without seeming cool, and remains powerful even in the piano passages. In the A minor Concerto the soloist and lively, circling continuo are well balanced and attuned to one another, and carry the musical proceedings along together. Christian Ferras proves himself to be on a par with Menuhin in the Double Concerto, in which the violins play along in a lively chiaroscuro. Instinctively the protagonists discover an ideal rapprochement between romantic emotion and baroque directness, which makes this recording so valuable and timeless. Two top EMI employees – producer Peter Andry and sound engineer Robert Gooch – must be expressly named here for setting down so authentically this event in London’s Kingsway Hall for posterity.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. Recording: October 1958, September and December 1959 by Neville Boyling

Meet the poetic sound patches of Claude Debussy (1862-1918), one of the greatest innovators of Western music. In an eventful period in his life, in which the composer left his wife and toured the coast of France with his new mistress, he wrote his impressionistic masterpiece La mer, an ode to the turbulence of the sea. Debussy was an ardent lover of William Turner and Claude Monet, whose colorful seascapes he translated into music through a rich palette of instruments. La mer, an exceptionally picturesque composition, captures the shine of the midday sun on the sea surface, the breaking of waves, the splashing of foam and the sparkling of water drops. In the first part, De l'aube a midi sur la mer, one can hear the sun rise majestically to its highest point in the sky, a process that leads to an ecstatic climax. In the second part, Jeux de vagues, the sea shows its kindest, most playful face, and in the third part, Dialogue du vent et de la mer, the wind and the waves become entangled in an intoxicating dance. La mer, a symphonic poem full of mood swings, seems to symbolize life as a whole, which is just as capricious as the sea, and subject to the same dynamics of ebb and flow. This lucid performance of La mer, by the Orchestre National De Lyon, is of the very highest quality.

The 3rd vinyl on Galya Bisengalleva’s Nomad Music Productions is an intimate duet for violin and viola, written by Edmund Finnis and performed by the LCO’s Bisengalieva and Robert Ames. Proceeding the dreamlike and experimental nature of Galya’s first two label entries alongside Claire M. Singer, Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch, Shiva Feshareki, and Chaines, the Kazakh violinist’s collaborative recording of ‘Brother’ is a relatively more straight-forward, but no less gripping, example of contemporary classical composition that naturally experiments with ideas about consonance/dissonance in a way that relates to folk music.

The culmination of three years work between Mica and Eliza - winner of the 2013 British Contemporary Piano Competition - ‘Slow Dark Green Murky Waterfall’ follows up their collaboration on the Oscar-nominated score for Pablo Larrain’s ‘Jackie’ score with a finer-shaded, patient space for low-lit, smoky expression that’s so intimate and personal it almost feels like eavesdropping a private recording.

Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Classical Music
Los Angeles based pianist, producer, and songwriter John Carroll Kirby traveled to Pietrasanta, Italy in the summer of 2018 on a self-imposed writing trip. During his stay he composed Tuscany, a two side-long solo piano exploration of this particular geographical envelope, a place where nature is shaped into form.
Kirby would cycle 12 kilometers each day to Cascata di Malbacco, a waterfall with jade pools and silver stone, and the inspiration for Side A of Tuscany. His own Cascata di Malbacco tumbles and shimmers along the piano as a gorgeous eighteen-minute-long improvised piece, some of it polished and some moments left raw.
On a ride to Sant’Anna, twenty-something kilometers away, Kirby took a wrong turn and got lost among the hills, where he encountered several monuments memorializing the victims of the Sant’Anna di Stazzema massacre. The dark history of an abandoned mill house served as the inspiration for the album’s haunting Side B, a eulogy for all of those forgotten by time.
Although Side A is inspired by the natural beauty of a waterfall, and Side B by the cruelty that people can inflict upon others, both pieces revolve around the same seven-note bassline. The idea Kirby is iterating on is the realization that darkness exists inside light, and vice versa; Tuscany is an inquiry into this duality and its consequences.
John Carroll Kirby has recently released records on Leaving Records, Outside Insight and Pinchy & Friends. In the studio and on the road, he’s produced and/or played with Connan Mockasin, Blood Orange, Sebastian Tellier, Shabazz Palaces and Solange.
He recently signed to Stones Throw Records.
Patience is a new outlet for exploring further beyond the break than usual. Inspired by the music perpetually on rotation at HQ – with E2-E4 representing the format’s high tide mark – each release will be one artist’s deep dive down one inspirational wormhole spread across two sides of vinyl, or two side-long sojourns making full use of a round 12” piece of plastic. Set and forget, zone out to tune in.

A download code is included. Frei aber froh! This was the motto of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897): ''Free but happy!'' The Romantic composer formulated it in response to his friend Joseph Joachim, who after the divorce of his wife went through life under the painful motto Frei aber einsam. In his intoxicating Third Symphony, Brahms - through the three notes F(rei) A(ber) F(roh) - focused on his personal love of freedom, as well as the heroic struggle it takes to become a free, independent individual. It is known that Brahms never got married, but often fell in love with young, beautiful female musicians, and felt a lifetime attraction to Clara Schumann, the wife of the famous composer. That romantic yearning can be heard in the lyrical, melancholic Poco allegretto, one of Brahms's best-known melodies. The second movement of the symphony, Andante, has a rustic character, and Clara called it ''a pure idyll''. Here one can hear the carefree, cheerful side of freedom, that of long walks in nature and the absence of oppressing tires. Being free is also frightening and difficult, which is reflected in the majestic motifs in the first and fourth movements, which follow each other at a furious pace and only in the final measures of the composition are reconciled in the recurring Frei aber froh-motif. This performance of Brahms's Third Symphony by the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the world-famous Jaap van Zweden, is of the very highest quality.

"How to begin? No beginning... never ending reverberation," Antoine Beuger writes in the accompanying notes to Leo Svirsky's River Without Banks. Dedicated to his first piano teacher Irena Orlov, River Without Banks is a mesmerizing, emotional collection of pieces that are simultaneously complex and fluid. The title River Without Banks comes from a chapter of musicologist Genrikh "Henry" Orlov's profound work Tree of Music. In said chapter, Orlov traces the history of sacred music from the Western and Eastern tradition and how the forms (of the chant, raga etc.) sought to eliminate the division between the physical and the spiritual - the bank and the river.

Arranged for two pianos with accompaniment from strings, trumpet, and electronics, this is Svirsky's deepest dive yet into the instability of listening and its transformation of musical semantics and affect. Like Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, Svirsky overlays romantic musical gestures to create a lush unfamiliarity. No sooner than each track begins the next moment unfurls beneath it, cascading time and blurring perception of past and present. River Without Banks is less an album of songs than songs of a singular, unlocatable album. Performed by the composer with assistance from Britton Powell, Max Eilbacher, Leila Bordreuil, Tim Byrnes, and recorded by Al Carlson.

Genre:Classical Music
Meet the intoxicating, meditative sounds of Claude Debussy (1862-1918), one of the greatest innovators of Western music. The impressionist composer was inspired by the classical myth of the sirens, female sea-demons with such unearthly beautiful voices that they managed to lure all passing sailors into their deadly arms. In a similar way, Debussy wanted to enchant his listeners with his esoteric composition Trois nocturnes, inspired by the atmosphere of the night. In the first part, Nuages, one can hear silvery-lit clouds slide slowly past the moon. The second part, Fetes, depicts nocturnal festivities and blazing torches, and the third part is devoted to the mysteriously singing Sirens. Unlike his contemporaries, Debussy did not compose elaborate, bombastic symphonies, but rather dreamy, self-contained music that is still topical today, and breaths the free spirit of nature. It 'would resound through the open spaces and float joyfully over the tops of the trees.' The lucid performance of the Orchestre National De Lyon comes close to Debussy's ideal, and seduces the listener to lose himself in otherworldly dreams and mind-expanding fantasies. This beautiful recording of Nocturnes never been on vinyl before!! *Pre-order price*

As noted for our Live In Berkeley 1970 release, the New York-born experimental composer and abstract keyboardist Steve Reich was an important pioneer of minimalism. After studying with jazz pianist Hall Overton, Reich learned composition at the Julliard
School of Music and later at Mills College, a hotbed of experimental music situated at the foot of the Oakland Hills, east of San Francisco. He later began experimenting with audio tape as a music medium at the San Francisco Tape Music Center with important figures involved in early electronic music experimentation, including Morton Subotnick, Pauline Oliveros, Ramon Sender and Phil Lesh, who would later become bassist in the Grateful Dead, and more importantly with Terry Riley, who collaborated with Reich for the staging of In C in 1964, which utilized fragmented music patterns in constant movement. Reich subsequently composed a number of film soundtracks and in 1967 collaborated with Oliveros and Richard Maxfield for the release New Sounds In Electronic Music. Phased patterns, sonic loops and electronic percussion were focal points from the mid-60s onwards. Information Transmission, Modulation and Noise is an astounding release, though many reviews repeat inaccurate information about the recordings featured on it. The music was first broadcast to the world in the early hours of November 6, 1970 on KPFA in Berkeley, California, when Reich and woodwind wizard/percussionist Jon Gibson made an unscheduled appearance at the studio, armed with a number of recent recordings. The first to air was a masterful version of Reich’s “Four Organs,” taken from a performance given at the Guggenheim in New York in May 1970, featuring regular collaborators Philip Glass, Art Murphy and Steve Chambers on combative organs, along with Reich, plus Gibson on non-stop maracas; it is strongly contrasted by the raw, mesmerising power of a percussive piece recorded in Ghana in the summer of 1970, made with members of the Ghana Dance Ensemble playing traditional Ewe instruments; according to Reich’s introduction during the broadcast, the piece is called “Gahu,” featuring master drummer Gideon Alewoye on the large agboba drum, dancer Freeman Dongo on the smaller kidi, dancer Thomas Annan on the even smaller kagan, and
Reich and Steve Scott on axatse rattles, along with an unidentified player on a gonkogwe or gungong bell. On the B-side of the disc, Reich presents an equally mesmerising rendition of Glass’ “Music In Similar Motion,” recorded at the Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis in May 1970, featuring Glass, Steve Chambers and Art Murphy on organ, Gibson and Richard Landry on soprano saxophones, Beverly Lauridsen on amplified cello, and Reich on an electric harpsichord.

A composer, a theorist, and an innovator, Harry Partch
stands out among so many other American classical artists
as one of the most eccentric. He notably rejected the
tradition of composers like Beethoven and Bach for a lack of
theatricality and drama, and took his greatest inspirations
from Eastern Noh theater, frequently incorporating speech
and dance into his pieces, as well as requiring participants
to perform multiple parts. His theories reflected this
dismissal, which sought to return musical tradition to those
of the pre-Classical era, with a heavy focus on microtonality,
and octave intervals beyond what was traditionally utilized.
Many of the pieces he composed would prominently feature
instruments of his own invention, including heavily modified
string instruments, mallet instruments, and pipe organs.
Over the course of his life, Partch released a number of
records, soundtracked numerous films by Madeline
Tourtelot, and wrote the highly influential text Genesis Of A
Music, which would introduce his theories to a
contemporary audience, and inspire fellow avant-garde
composers as Lou Harrison, Ben Johnston, James Tenney,
and even the famed experimental collective The Residents.
One of his most famed works was the stage play Delusion
Of The Fury, a piece of performance art based upon the
Japanese Noh drama Atsumori, while also taking cues from
Ethiopian folk tales, Shakespearean tragedy, and ancient
Greek traditions. Delusion Of The Fury is looked back
upon by critics and historians as one of Partch's seminal
works, making heavy use of his signature micro-tonal
compositional style, as well as many of his own invented
instruments. It is considered his confrontation with his own
anger towards a world that frequently rejected him, and
dealt him hardship. The play first premiered at the UCLA
Playhouse in 1969, whereupon it was recorded by Columbia
Records, and presented in a double LP format.

“(...)The compositions of this record represent attempts at new means of musical expression. Some utilize conventional musical instruments and sounds in startlingly new ways, giving an impression of an actual “new” sound being created; some use instruments new to music (electrical, mechanical and natural) adding to the composers’ palette of timbres and tonalities. (...)This record is meant as a tool for those using new sounds and techniques in composing. There are basic sounds (some of which are hard to come by) and basic sound patterns, together with examples of how these sounds and patterns may be utilized (...)”

Sounds of New Music is a legendary collection of 18 compositions from the 1920s to the mid-1950s representing attempts at a “new means of musical expression.” Composers include Edgard Varèse, Henry Cowell, and John Cage, whose “Dance” is played on a transformed Steinway piano that gives the music an almost primitive quality.

The crossover between electronic music and classical composition has never been in more vibrant and dynamic health. Multifarious musician Emika explores this fertile ground on her ambitious new opus 'Melanfonie': her first orchestral composition, some four years in the making.
Funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign that exceeded its target by an impressive €25,000.
While many rebel from their classical training never to return to it explicitly, Emika has always been attracted to the potential and freedoms offered by the symphony form. As well as taking inspiration from her electronic music background in composing the music itself, Emika also applied some of production and playback principles from that realm to create a piece whose every element has been carefully considered.
Emika is on a quest to try and change what we mean when we talk about ‘classical music’. For her, the magic of the ‘genre’ is about the instruments themselves and more importantly the people who play them; not the restricting traditions and conventions of the classical world itself. I want to change the face of classical music and give it a more honest and real image. It is time we had something other than pomp and circumstance and avant-garde squeaks and pops.”

Moved from US to Denmark, between 1979 and 1980, he began to investigate possibilities of a very personal language, contributing to create the heterogeneous kaleidoscope of Post-Minimalism results. These works are constructed around a relentless musical process that consists of delaying and repeating every element in a certain measure, without intentional alteration. Siegel called this process canon technique, letting it to become over time his nutritious obsession. Compared to the original 1983’s release by Danish label Paula, are now included authentic pictures from the performance of Domino Figures, so that finally return visual results of Siegel’s works as part of his contribution to contemporary arts. Moreover, the present reissue presents precious liner notes written by the author, echoing the current value of his experimental approach to the sound practice. “Autumn Resonance” is a fast canon in which musical figures move quickly around the concert hall: measuring distances, Siegel emphasizes the interrelation of the individual piano, the acoustic of the concert hall and his mood as parts of an organic work. “Domino Figures For 10-100 Guitars” embodies as sound work the shape of a semicircle. Widely renowned in its large number of declinations, here is presented in a 42 guitars version, dedicated to the Danish guitarist Erling Møldrup: the performers are sit in a semicircle in a kind of slow chain reaction where a choral texture is produced, evolving and slowly changing. Massive sound, spatial effects and strong visual impact meanwhile of aural: Wayne Siegel’s early works can definitely be perceived as art installations, part of a transformation in music as drastic as open.

Born in Oakland, CA, but raised in New Mexico, Partch learned mandolin, violin, piano, reed organ, and cornet as a child. Clearly a unique talent, even that early on, Partch went to USC Music School but was dissatisfied with his teachers, and instead studied music on his own where he learned to reject many of the Western constructs of music and began experimenting withusing scales of unequal intervals in just intonation, and was one of the first Western composers of the 20th century to use microtonal scales. These recordings were some of the first made after Partch settled in Sausalito and founded his legendary Gate 5 studio. Debuted in 1953 on KPFA radio, these compositions still sound otherworldly and cutting edge today. Essential American 20th Century composer Harry Partch, on Jeanne Dielman.

TASTATURSTUECKE VOL 1 introduces 9 outstanding new compositions for church organ, harpsichord and self programmed software. The album comprises the first collaborational recordings of Brian Parks (Atlanta) and Phillip Schulze (Düsseldorf). The two musicians first met in the early 2000s at the famous Wesleyan University, Connecticut, where they regularly attended seminars of their teachers Alvin Lucier and Anthony Braxton.

Through extended preparations for a series of live performances in Europe in 2019 (e.g. at the APPROXIMATION Festival, Düsseldorf) Parks and Schulze developed and refined a unique approach towards composition, highlighting their interest in the correlation of the invariable flawlessness of a computer versus the human performer on church organ or harpsichord.

Largely written for church organ and harpsichord all pieces also correspond perfectly with the physical spaces the recordings have taken place at. The album was recorded in three different churches in Düsseldorf which have been chosen for the different qualities of their specific room acoustics. Treating slight differences in pitch, phasing, overtones and rhythm all compositions on TASTATURSTUECKE VOL 1 offer an evocative density and flexibility that imbue the music with an organic feel.

The nine pieces range in shape and form from concise and sharp clarity such as Ranking Studies 1-3 to the extended, exquisitely paced radiance of the 8 minutes of Partials Chrorale. Mensuring Canon for 8 voices is obsessively restated in constantly changing permutations whereas the metronomic Reliefs for Ecclesial Space sounds urgent, deep and explosive.

The last piece, Activated Progression, in particular reverses the roles between computer and the human musician. The software never messes up the phase. The human would do his best to gradually change from one state to another. Once decisions are made regarding registration and finger assignment, the human should behave like a well-fabricated wind-up toy. The two hands remain offset the entire time, and at the fastest possible speed, enact patterns of three notes (left hand) and four notes (right hand). The computer meanwhile, moves from Euclidean rhythm to Euclidean rhythm over leisurely time periods.

Ride handed the entirety of their highly acclaimed 6th studio album, This Is Not A Safe Place, to mysterious London act, Pêtr Aleksänder, who stripped the songs back to just the vocals and added their customarily beautiful string arrangements, keys and synth textures beneath them.

"The results take Ride deep into the neo-classical / ambient territory that a couple of the remixes of their previous album hinted at and will appeal to fans of those musical styles, as well as those who consider themselves a part of the band’s die-hard fanbase." - Boomkat review

Both prolific composers in their own right working within the field of modern composition/ new electronic music, Berlin-based Yair Elazar Glotman and Stockholm-based Mats Erlandsson have been collaborating since 2015. ‘Negative Chambers’, their first joint album together was released on Miasmah Recordings in 2017, and saw them exploring new approaches to the use of traditional acoustic instruments. Having recently signed to FatCat’s 130701 imprint, and following closely on from Deutsche Gramophon’s release of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s ‘Last and First Men’ project which Yair co-composed, the pair’s sophomore album ‘Emanate’ is a powerful and stunningly executed extended duration work that utilises a fantastic ensemble cast and continues to explore their ideas of a ‘displaced sound’ – combining electronic and acoustic sound sources through both analogue and digital means to create an ambiguous composite work, a music that sounds neither clearly electronic or acoustic, existing instead in some in-between space.

Spiral is the third album by the Greek composer Vangelis, released
in 1977. Less celebrated than the two albums which preceded it, but
the quality of this record is at least on the same level as the previous
recordings. The keyboards are prominent on front of the music, while
Vangelis is exploring new electronic grounds. It is a concept album,
thematically inspired by ancient philosopher Lao Tse. For the track
“To the Unknown Man” Vangelis received the Midem International
Instrumental award in 1978.
The multiple-award winning composer of electronic, progressive,
orchestral and jazz music started his career working in several
successful bands, such as Aphrodite’s Child. He composed over 50
albums and is still creative in developing new concepts.
Available as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on

Francesco Tristano is a Luxembourg classical and experimental pianist and composer, who also plays the clarinet. He composes both classical and electronic music and has previously released his music on labels like Deutsche Grammophon, Get Physical and Transmat. Now in 2017 Francesco Tristano returns to his first passion with a selection of beautiful, newly composed works for solo piano. 'Piano Circle Songs' features award-winning Canadian pianist and songwriter Chilly Gonzales on four of the tracks, of which Gonzales composed 'Tryst' himself for the album. It was important for Francesco to capture the intimacy of the music in both the recording and the post-production phases. By purposefully placing mics close to the instrument, he wants the listener to experience the sensation of having 'their ear inside the piano'. The album theme of 'circle' reflects the cyclical nature of the pieces themselves; many of the works follow ABA form or extended variations of this. Francesco also drew inspiration from a chance conversation with Chilly Gonzales and reflections on the behaviour of his children. Francesco will perform the music from the album in concert in 2017 in Berlin, Munich, London and Paris. This 2LP set contains a 4 page booklet with credits and pictures.

It's easy to take Arthur Rubinstein for granted. One of the mightiest pianists of the 20th Century, the Polish-born artist lived for 95 years, debuting in 1894 at age 7, and retiring from the concert stage 82 years later. His playing was infused with a deep connection to the music, a golden singing touch, and a particular, elusive quality that combined gentility, warmth, intimacy, and insouciance. Many pianists today have some and perhaps even all of those qualities, but the Rubinstein blend was a very special je ne sais quoi that seems to belong to artists born in the era that was wiped out by the World Wars.

He was a dynamo. At age 64, he played seventeen concertos in a five-concert series in New York that spanned a period of 12 days. But for New York audiences, the most amazing Rubinstein year was 1961, by which time the artist was in his 74. Starting on January 17 that year, and concluding on December 10th, Rubinstein played ten recitals at Carnegie Hall. All were sellouts or near sellouts, tickets in such demand that audience members were also seated on the stage.

His reviews were rapturous; his audiences, enraptured. Standing ovations preceded the first note on the program and elicited multiple encores after the last. The Times paid tribute to Rubinstein's feat in an editorial on December 11th: "Artur Rubinstein concluded his massive series of ten piano recitals last night in Carnegie Hall. But they were more than piano recitals. They were an attitude toward life-the expression of a civilized man who, in creating and recreating beauty throughout his life, has refused to grow old."

Toronto keyboardist R. Grunwald has played on sessions for hundreds of musicians, and has served as bandleader for jazz/pop chanteuse Jill Barber and country/folk songwriter Donovan Woods for the better part of a decade. Now he's ready to step onto the public stage with his own music'alone. Oma is an evocative and deeply personal solo piano record, inspired in part by the life story of his 96-year-old grandmother, a Holocaust survivor and pianist. Drawing from Erik Satie, Nils Frahm and others, Grunwald refers to his intensely melodic compositions as 'extended minimalism.'

'After quitting piano, it was my Oma who inspired me to get back into it. She survived the 2nd world war moving from town to town, hiding from the Nazis, and the Russians in Poland. Music was the one thing that tied her young life together. This music is a tribute to her.'

Enjoy in a quiet environment.
