LP+DVD | 2019 | UK | Original (Domino)

Release:2019 / UK – Original
Genre:Classical Music
One copy per customer.

Domino is extremely proud to present Henryk Górecki: Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) performed by Beth Gibbons and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Krzysztof Penderecki.

The performance took place at The National Opera Grand Theatre in Warsaw on November 29th 2014, and was part of an evening of programming that also featured Jonny Greenwood's (Radiohead) 48 Responses To Polymorphia and the world premiere of Bryce Dessner's (The National) Réponse Lutosławski.

Following an invitation to collaborate at the concert, Beth Gibbons undertook an intense preparation process, including tackling the challenge of learning the original text (and the emotional weight it carries) without speaking the mother language. Typical to Beth though - the elusive yet iconic frontwoman of one of the most important British bands of the last two decades - the challenge was met and exceeded. Her performance alongside the maestro Penderecki has been hailed as triumphant, as you can see and hear on this release.

The film, was produced by the National Audiovisual Institute, Poland and directed by Michał Merczyński.

Matthew Herbert releases a new big band album - The State Between Us. The double album is released on the day the U.K. is scheduled to leave the European Union. Made in collaboration with over a thousand musicians and singers from across the EU, The State Between Us began as a project responding to the triggering of Article 50 and the dramatic shift in the national story that began in June 2016. Over the course of the next two years - against the backdrop of a relentlessly challenging news cycle and via large-scale recording sessions abroad - something unexpected emerged.

The State Between Us is an album that contemplates what it means to be British in 2019. Its sixteen tracks reflect a journey on foot across Great Britain (and beyond) imagined in beautifully elegiac melodies carefully woven with site-specific recordings. World War II planes in flight rub against a Ford Fiesta being broken down into its component parts; the loneliness of a cross-channel swimmer follows a single cyclist riding around Chequers. Here, the evocative sounds of empty harbours, and factories being demolished, of ancient trees and the calls of soon to be extinct animals ebb and flow through music that poses one hugely significant question - Where’s Home? - and leaves the listener with one resoundingly hopeful answer: You’re Welcome Here.

Whilst the record is a giant collaboration, there are a number of notable special guests including singers Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne, Arto Lindsay, Merz, Patrick Clarke and highly respected solo instrumentalists Enrico Rava, Byron Wallen, Sheila Maurice Gray and Nathaniel Cross. Lyrics include words by Britain’s greatest living playwright Caryl Churchill, Percy Shelley, John Donne and various abusive members of the public and the secretary general of UKIP. Artwork by longtime collaborator Sarah Hopper for The State Between Us is based on an image taken by renowned photographer Eva Vermandel.

Near the end of the old millennium, someone once rapped, "Being futuristic these days means being futuristic on your own terms," which is entirely fitting when said rapper records an album of solo piano instrumentals. (Perhaps less instructive is what said rapper went on to say: "Being futuristic means loving worms, saving your sperm, wearing your pubes in a perm.") The former Chilly Gonzales has a hint of Gershwin in his playing, an urbane, contemplative take on the blues that sometime turns into a wry smile. He also has a hint of Satie, the spare and haunted sound of a music box turning slowly to a halt as it comes to the end of its wind. But what he also has is entirely his own, which not only makes this the best album of solo piano instrumentals by a rapper extant but also one of the finest solo piano albums not by a jazz or classical performer. Obviously, there's a duality to any man who lit up stages with Peaches but also played with and produced Jane Birkin and Charles Aznavour, but Solo Piano is a disarmingly wonderful record. - allmusic.com

Truer words couldn't be spoken for exactly why Vitamin String Quartet had to honor the Icelandic icon. Throughout her career, she has radiated an eclectic and avant-garde air, incorporating aspects of electronic, experimental, glitch, jazz, 285, and contemporary classical music. She consistently defies categorization and VSQ was passionate about making an album that reflected that audacious outlook. Bjork often calls herself a pop artist. LP | 2019 | EU | Original (Temporary Residence)

Release:2019 / EU – Original
Genre:Classical Music
Bruno Bavota is a young Italian composer and multi-instrumentalist with seemingly boundless potential, and an extraordinary gift for marrying the intellectual and
emotional into earnest and profoundly effective songs. Though favorably compared in his early career to another Italian composer, the legendary Ludovico Einaudi, Bavota has found himself increasingly pursuing ways to distort and disturb traditional arrangements and melodies in pursuit of a more distinct resonance. Armed with a plethora of outboard effects pedals and processors, Bavota manually manipulates his
songs in real time as he performs - often with his bare hands engaged in a seesaw battle of construction against obstruction. It infuses a genuine sense of tension and forward momentum that makes his work extraordinarily poignant. Recorded live in
one afternoon at a friend's studio in Bavota's hometown of Naples, Italy, RE_CORDIS documents many of Bavota's most recognizable and accomplished works as they st and at this moment in time - ever-evolving musical life-forms that
change shape while maintaining their distinctive skeletons. It also introduces his newest work, "The night of," a tense, escalating race of loops punctuated by a series of dramatic chord strikes. The recording is charmingly informal, leaving the sounds of Bavota's physical movements - the shuffling of feet, the triggering of effects pedals, the creaking of stools - present in the mix to mingle with the music. As an exhibition of Bavota's skills as a composer and performer, it's impressive; as a
glimpse of what's to come, it's an epiphany.

Maryanne Amacher (1938 - 2009) was a composer of large-scale fixed-duration sound installations and a highly original thinker in the areas of perception, sound spatialization, creative intelligence, and aural architecture. She is frequently cited as a pioneer of what has come to be called “sound art,” although her thought and creative practice consistently challenge key assumptions about the capacities and limitations of the genre. Amacher’s work anticipates some of the most important developments in network culture, media arts, acoustic ecology, and sound studies, yet due to its expansive interdisciplinary nature it has rarely been documented. Following two CDs for Tzadik and her inclusion in the monumental collection OHM: The Early Gurus Of Electronic Music (1948-1980), this publication of Amacher’s 1991 piece Petra marks her first commercially available instrumental work as well as the first time her music has ever been available on vinyl.

Charlemagne Palestine's majestic 1976 work The Golden Mean, originally performed by Palestine on two pianos, is revisited here as The Goldennn Meeenn + Sheeenn, a new collaboration between Palestine and enigmatic musician Rrose.
March 2018: the Festival Variations in Nantes commissions Charlemagne Palestine to reinvent The Golden Mean for two pianists. Palestine chose Rrose to join him in this new rendition of the work. Together, they performed The Goldennn Meeenn + Sheeenn onstage at the main opera house in Nantes -- the sumptuous Théâtre Graslin – with extraordinary results.
The concept of the 'golden mean' goes back to the roots of mathematics, and ancient Greek philosophy. It is an important work in the Palestine mythos, embodying his total immersion in the power of the interval. "It's probably his most systematic work . . . a step-by-step journey through the intervals of the octave," says Rrose. "When we rehearsed it, we were noticing how each interval is like a universe of its own -- with its own history, emotions, and sonic qualities all mixed up together. Every time you move from one interval to the next, it feels like moving into another world.
I love the interval," Palestine told me in a recent interview. "I love when it plays with itself. That's what I learned from organ musics too. You can just do an interval, and if they're just slightly out of tune with each other, then they shimmer . . . they play themselves. And it sounds like somebody's playing lots of notes. In your ear, it's like an aural phenomenon . . . that's my whole concept. I make something that then does itself somehow. It continues by itself. So I don't have to always be there. And that makes my music a little less egocentric. So there's more space. Also for the listener — the ear plays with these things, and you're not always being given orders. Your ear isn't given orders all the time of what to listen for."
Beautifully recorded, with mastering by Rashad Becker of Dubplates and Mastering, The Golden Mean + Sheeenn feels expansive, radiant and hypnotic, opening new ears to its enduring mystery.
Rrose adds this note to listeners: "Do not focus your attention on the notes being played, but on the ocean of overtones swimming, suspended, overhead, brushing against one another, kissing one another, melting into one another.

“Symphony No. 9 in D minor” is the last symphony upon which Anton Bruckner worked, leaving the
last movement incomplete at the time of his death in 1896. Van Beinum, the Dutch conductor, was a
specialist in the music of Bruckner. One of the best recordings of the Bruckner 9th, some say that it is
THEE best, was recorded in Amsterdam in September 1956 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. This
is, by any standards, a great account of the 9th, one that is more dramatic than epic, a performance
that anatomizes this great wounded giant of a symphony. Eduard van Beinum is responsible for the
Concertgebouw Orchestra's Bruckner tradition. Eduard van Beinum was a great Brucknerian.

Quirine Viersen returns to the cello suites of Johann Sebastian Bach.
She decided she wants to share with you the development she has gone
through after deep inner work. Just as the cello suites were a new journey
for Bach, they signify now the same for her. “Bach gave me, time and again,
life energy. Through his purity he brought me back to my own purity and
closer to the answer on my questions.” Due to the enormous development
in length and size of the structure, Viersen suspects that they have been
an experiment for Bach himself, possibly even study material. “The further
you get into the suites, the larger the intervals and bigger the technical
challenges. It demonstrates that Bach was becoming more and more aware
of the enormous possibilities.
Being awarded the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award, Quirine performed
with the Vienna Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta at the Lucerne Festival
in 2000. Since then, Quirine has played the cello concerto repertoire
with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under Herbert Blomstedt, Ingo
Metzmacher and Bernard Haitink, St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra/
Valery Gergiev, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra/Jean Fournet and
many others. After working and recording extensively with Silke Avenhaus
for almost twenty years, Quirine has sought out new duo collaborations.
Recitals with pianist Enrico Pace kicked off with great success at the
Concertgebouw, Amsterdam in 2017.

numbered copies on black vinyl.

Musique Plastique (Visible Cloaks, Pedro) rescue a nearly lost soundtrack to a Belgian avant-theatrical work from the 80s. For fans of Nuno Canavarro, Roberto Musci and Vito Ricci.
Like the wings Daedalus crafted for his son Icarus, John Gilbert Colman’s score for sampler, voice and chamber orchestra almost melted away completely, disappearing into the tides of time.
The album originally served as the score to an avant-garde production of the Greek myth that toured the Belgian theatre circuit in 1986. Director Guy Cassiers cast the play with 45 developmentally disabled actors enrolled at the Krauwelenhof school in Antwerp, working for six months with the young actors (aged 12-17) to discover and develop their talents, creating (by all accounts) a deeply moving piece of visual theatre. Rather than using dialogue, Cassier used movement, costumes and music tell the fable, words were only present as text fragments within the score, spoken by members of the chorus or sung by Rolande van Der Paal. Colman's compositions elevate the experimental narrative with broad shifts in mood, utilizing a pop-concrète style by incorporating sampled squeaking balloons, environmental recordings, tuned percussion, drum computer, and voice to accompany the traditional small chamber instrumentation. The music is reminiscent of other avant-theatrical pieces from that era by Nuno Canavarro, Milesi & Bacalov, Todd Barton, Vito Ricci and Roberto Musci, while standing on its own as a unique and moving piece of minimal music. Remastered DMM pressing.

Written in 1913 by Luigi Russolo, The Art of Noise Manifesto marks the start of the modern music era. There wouldn’t be probably either John Cage or Musique concrète without the disruptive sound experimentations of the Italian Futurists at the beginning of the 20th century. The Futurist conception of music, indeed, made no distinction between the realm of the sound and that of noises: both of them were part of the same musical substance, the background of the human existence in the world, and therefore, a raw material ready to be manipulated by the artist. Starting from the founder and leader of the Futurism Filippo Marinetti, La Musica Futurista nell'Italia e nel Mondo is a compelling collection of pieces executed by some of the pivotal figures of the “art of noises.” Comes in a special "flap" deluxe gatefold sleeve, an Italian futurist newspaper replica.

Beving has been one with the piano from an early age. He was forced to end his musical studies at the conservatory and instead continued at university to get a degree in social sciences. However, his love for his instrument never perished.

Where once his goal was to hit as many notes per minute as physically possible, his style of playing has changed over the years, searching for a particular aesthetic essence. His path was illuminated by a piano that Beving inherited from his grandmother when she passed away in 2009. This German instrument insisted on a more gentle touch and a gracious pace, which eventually led Beving to adapt to a more classical vocabulary to tell his story.

Joep Beving is a composer and musician, but to the international advertising community he is mostly known as the face of music agency MassiveMusic.

Henrik Schwarz and !K7 are proud to announce a collaboration that will bare many different musical fruits. The first of these is a brand new label called Between Buttons, curated by Henrik and focused on acoustic sounds and contemporary compositions. Between Buttons will be in partnership with !K7’s own neo-classical hub 7K!, and will kick off with a new mini LP by Schwarz entitled Works Piano, followed by an EP entitled Aphorisms by Syrian artists Khaled Kurbeh & Raman Khalaf Ensemble. Mixing up old and new technologies, experimental and more classical approaches, the label will see Schwarz forge new paths in his own work, as well as curating material from the peers he has worked with over the last 15 years. Mainly made up of acoustic sounds, piano, string quartets, self-built instruments, percussion and intriguing classicist elements with a modern twist, there will be EPs from piano virtuoso Bugge Wesseltoft, as well as other electronic producers wanting to show themselves in a different, more 'unplugged' light. “In these times of constant turbo mode, likes and thumbs-up, we need to go back to basics,” says Henrik. “We want to move away from the idea that relentless hasty productivity is a must, and instead take time to create space, to let ideas mature and to focus the mind on subtler sounds.”
Works Piano will be a four track mini album that uses a Yamaha Disklavier as the starting point and reimagines it, reworks it and alters it with various digital and recording technologies. One track is a created with a reactive algorithm and one is composed purely from altered and processed piano sounds.

Limited edition for Record Store Day 2017!

"The Music Of Gurdjieff / De Hartmann" is the result of an extraordinary collaboration between the Greek-Armenian spiritual teacher, G. I. Gurdjieff and Russian composer, Thomas de Hartmann. Gurdjieff traveled for twenty years in the Middle East and Central Asia to discover and develop the teaching which now bears his name. Meditative and mindful, Gurdjieff’s music stems from Eastern melodies and music he heard in remote monasteries.

From 1923 to 1929, Thomas de Hartmann worked closely with Gurdjieff at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man outside Paris, translating into European notation the music Gurdjieff composed from his travels. The original tapes containing these tracks were recorded in the 1950s under informal circumstances with rudimentary equipment, never intended to be heard by the public. As for the instrumentation, the performance is stripped down to nothing more than a single piano (played by de Hartmann) but lacks absolutely nothing; rather de Hartmann uses the negative space between notes to revel in resonance, in turn capturing remarkable depth and meaning.

Following the appearance of a track on LITA’s “I Am The Center: Private Issue New Age In America 1950-1990”, this material, out of print on vinyl for over three decades, could be considered the seeds that would eventually grow to become the roots of what we now think of as new age music. Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, who recorded the album G. I. Gurdjieff: Sacred Hymns for the ECM label in 1980, is among the artists to interpret this music since, but the tracks presented in this five LP box-set are the only recordings available of de Hartmann himself playing the music he and Gurdjieff composed. Also included are seven additional recordings, never before available on vinyl, including a talk by de Hartmann about Gurdjieff’s view of the music.

This official Record Store Day 2017 release is limited to 1,000 copies only. The first ever vinyl reissue of these recordings, includes 7 bonus pieces never before on vinyl.
All audio restored and remastered from the original analog master tapes. New artwork is featured on 5 deluxe Stoughton “tip-on” jackets and slipcase. This release also contains essay, archive photos and download card for MP3 of all 56 pieces. The final side features custom etching.

Genre:Classical Music
Duvall Timothy isn't a musician. At least not in that conventional sort of way. No, Timothy's artistic expression is the sort in which all of his daily actions are intentional and each action reveals a small part of his large vision.

He steps out for his day dressed in all blue: A statement of self. He chefs African cuisine: a medium to discover his heritage and share that heritage with others. And when he returns home, he plays piano.

What you have here is an exploration in memory. Memories of classical, of jazz, and hip-hop. Fragmented into its elements, looped simply, and then reconstructed complexly.
Timothy's compositions evolve the same way any meaningful memory comes back to the mind. At first in snippets looped in the minds fog. Then, as those fragments build, the scenes of the past rush back into full view. And as quickly as they appear, they dissipate away. Fleeting and substantial. But the simplicity is purposeful.
And while Timothy is drawing from deeply personal experiences, his playing feels intimate and familiar because we've all felt the essence of memory: love and loss, joy and pain.
So it's fitting that this be the inaugural offering from I Should Care Records. It's our hope that Brown Loop is as memorable and haunting for you as it was when we first heard it.

One of the most striking documents of Italy’s Minimalist movement, Giusto Pio’s "Motore Immobile" is a masterwork with few equivalents. Produced by Franco Battiato in 1979, at the outset of a long and fruitful period of collaboration between the two composers, and issued by the legendary Cramps Records, its triumphs were met by silence, before falling from view.

Emerging on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing, "Motore Immobile" now sits within a reappraisal of a large neglected body of efforts made by the Italian avant-garde during the second half of the 1970’s and early 80’s. It is singular, but not alone. It resonates within a collective world of shimmering sound, one familiar to fans of Battiato, Lino Capra Vaccina, Luciano Cilio, Roberto Cacciapaglia, Francesco Messina and Raul Lovisoni.

An exercise in elegant restraint - note and resonance held to the most implicit need. Where everything between root and embellishment has been stripped away. A sublime organ drone, against interventions of deceptively simple structural complexity - executed by Piano, Violin, and Voice. A sonic sculpture reaching heights which few have touched. A thing of beauty and an album as perfect as they come. The reemergence of Motore Immobile heralds what is unquestionably one of the most important reissues of the year.

John Cage and Christian Wolff's self-titled 1962 LP was an early showcase of both 20th century composer's experimental chops, and is highly regarded as some of their finest work. Cage's piece, which spans the whole of side 1, was originally composed in 1960, and like many of his pieces, would never be performed the same way twice. It involves the overlaying of transparencies to create the "score", while performers manipulate phonographic cartridges in a variety of ways to create amplified sound. To add to the effect, this particular performance is actually the superimposition of four performances. In all, it is a truly groundbreaking piece of 20th century classical. Wolff's side, while less extreme, is equally innovative, and a window into his particular pointillist vision of music.

The LP release presents the reissue of a little-known, but extremely beauty, Post-Minimalism album composed by Wayne Siegel when he was mid-twenties. Moved from US to Denmark, between 1979 and 1980, he began to investigate possibilities of a very personal language, contributing to create the heterogeneous kaleidoscope of Post-Minimalism results. These works are constructed around a relentless musical process that consists of delaying and repeating every element in a certain measure, without intentional alteration. Siegel called this process canon technique, letting it to become over time his nutritious obsession. Compared to the original 1983’s release by Danish label Paula, are now included authentic pictures from the performance of Domino Figures, so that finally return visual results of Siegel’s works as part of his contribution to contemporary arts. Moreover, the present reissue presents precious liner notes written by the author, echoing the current value of his experimental approach to the sound practice. “Autumn Resonance” is a fast canon in which musical figures move quickly around the concert hall: measuring distances, Siegel emphasizes the interrelation of the individual piano, the acoustic of the concert hall and his mood as parts of an organic work. “Domino Figures For 10-100 Guitars” embodies as sound work the shape of a semicircle. Widely renowned in its large number of declinations, here is presented in a 42 guitars version, dedicated to the Danish guitarist Erling Møldrup: the performers are sit in a semicircle in a kind of slow chain reaction where a choral texture is produced, evolving and slowly changing. Massive sound, spatial effects and strong visual impact meanwhile of aural: Wayne Siegel’s early works can definitely be perceived as art installations, part of a transformation in music as drastic as open.

It feels like a meditation over beauty and creativity Jóhannsson is a role model for the growing scene of contemporary composers who draw their inspiration from soundtracks, Minimalism, Ambient und electronic music. “Orphée describes the way out from the dark into the light inspired by mythical variations from Ovid to Cocteau. It’s the story of death and reincarnation as a metaphor for our society. Again Jóhannsson mixes acoustic elements combined with electronics, mysterious soundscapes paired with orchestral and a capella voices.

Le Groupe de Recherches Musicales (The Group of Musical Research) of the O.R.T.F. (Office of the French Radio-Television) is known in the world principally as the promoter of an original technique of realization as well as reflection : Musique concrète. For more than fifteen years, the Groupe de Recherches Musicales has thus founded its experience, its methods of research and particular techniques upon a confrontation between the musical act, reflection upon its elements, experimentation on sound sources, and the electroacoustical means. Grouped around Pierre Schaeffer and Francois Bayle, composers and researchers try to give new direction to musical activity through the conjugated action of a program of Fundamental Research on the languages of music (concrete, electronic, but also instrumental and oriental) and a program of Expression, resulting in original compositions as well as essays for the ballet, theater, cinema, or television (...) In this LP you can find some great examples of the incredible production of many of the most celebrated composers of the ‘movement’: Boulez, Stockhausen, Parmegiani among others.

First released in 1992 on Velvet City Records, The Black Ice EP treads more into a deeper and jazzier vibes than their other outings at that time (such as the Union Camp release). A few listens and one can easily recognize the influence that all four tracks had on future labels and artists throughout the mid and late 1990's. This is timeless, pioneering Chicago deep house at its finest and a must have for all collectors.

French modern-classical quartet astrïd return on May 10th with the first part of a new release entitled A Porthole. Conceptually the two records work in unison, focusing on portholes into the abyss, with part one delving into the depths of the deep sea. The tracks are named after various strains of seaweed, the artwork depicting dark waves and uncertainty. Part two will follow in a years time and will turn its attention to the night sky and constellations. A Porthole continues Astrid’s signature style of billowing guitars, strings and woodwind. Each element intertwined with another, linked perfectly together through restrained jazz-tinged percussion. 2017’s highly-acclaimed release ‘Through the Sparkle’ with renowned pianist Rachel Grimes (of Rachels) set the bar extremely high for this release but astrïd have matched the depth, melody and quality of that record here.

Alessandro Moreschi (1858-1922) was the last known castrato, and the only one to have ever made recordings. He was born into a Catholic family in one of the so-called Roman Castles, where he was castrated either for health reasons, or because of his singing talents, the history is unclear. But either way he was discovered soon after for his talents and by a very young age was known as “l'Angelo di Roma” and quickly became the First Soprano of the Sistine Chapel choir, a position he held for more than 30 years. In Roma at the time members of the Sistine Chapel choir, and castrati in particular, held much esteem, bordering on celebrity, and Moreschi was probably the most famous of them all. His recordings were made in 1902 and 1904 at the Vatican. Most of them are extremely rare and are collected here for the first time. This historic re-issue includes all twelve records which Professor Moreschi is known to have made, as well as five choral records on which his voice is clearly discernable.

A truly beautiful and ear-pleasing record that unashamedly shows the composer’s and performer’s love for the piano.

Genre:Classical Music
Contact is the third and final part of Flemish musician and composer
Guy Van Nueten’s piano trilogy ‘Pacman”. With Contact, Van Nueten
has come up with his most mature work to date. Through recording
his compositions in one take he allowed for a unity of time and space.
This is a reaction against the frequent cutting and processing that takes
place during recordings, whereby original emotions become diluted and
the distance between music and listener increases. “I don’t know what
happened with me,” says Van Nueten, “but with this record I’ve delved
deep. I raised the bar higher than ever. This is the crowning glory.”
By the age of 5 Guy Van Nueten learnt to play piano and he became
known to a larger audience as the songwriter and keyboard player for
The Sands, well known for the pop classic ‘April & June’. Van Nueten
subsequently became a session- and live musician for the cream of the
Belgian rock scene, with bands such as dEUS, Daan, Zita Swoon and
countless others. His compositions, influenced by Bach, minimal music,
pop and electronic music, combine a feel for lyricism and humour with
an irrepressible urge for purity.

Genre:Classical Music
A composer, a theorist, and an innovator, Harry Partch
stands out among so many other American classical artists
as one of the most eccentric. He notably rejected the
tradition of composers like Beethoven and Bach for a lack of
theatricality and drama, and took his greatest inspirations
from Eastern Noh theater, frequently incorporating speech
and dance into his pieces, as well as requiring participants
to perform multiple parts. His theories reflected this
dismissal, which sought to return musical tradition to those
of the pre-Classical era, with a heavy focus on microtonality,
and octave intervals beyond what was traditionally utilized.
Many of the pieces he composed would prominently feature
instruments of his own invention, including heavily modified
string instruments, mallet instruments, and pipe organs.
Over the course of his life, Partch released a number of
records, soundtracked numerous films by Madeline
Tourtelot, and wrote the highly influential text Genesis Of A
Music, which would introduce his theories to a
contemporary audience, and inspire fellow avant-garde
composers as Lou Harrison, Ben Johnston, James Tenney,
and even the famed experimental collective The Residents.
One of his most famed works was the stage play Delusion
Of The Fury, a piece of performance art based upon the
Japanese Noh drama Atsumori, while also taking cues from
Ethiopian folk tales, Shakespearean tragedy, and ancient
Greek traditions. Delusion Of The Fury is looked back
upon by critics and historians as one of Partch's seminal
works, making heavy use of his signature micro-tonal
compositional style, as well as many of his own invented
instruments. It is considered his confrontation with his own
anger towards a world that frequently rejected him, and
dealt him hardship. The play first premiered at the UCLA
Playhouse in 1969, whereupon it was recorded by Columbia
Records, and presented in a double LP format.

Le Raccourci is a welcome introduction to the world of modern classical identity Sebastian Gandera. The impressionist landscapes of a sensitive soul self-reflecting, these miniature compositions alternate across a rudimentary set up of piano, field recorder, sampler and four track. Melancholic utterings hastily captured some 100km east of Paris. Classically trained by the same teacher as his parents, Gandera first began recording in the confines of his university dorm room, inspired by a C60 from friend and future collaborator Bernard Odot (A Gethsémani). Humbly existing without sparing a thought to music industry or career, Gandera’s personal effects surfaced via the European and US cassette networks from 1988 to 1994. Impressively accomplished for the DIY scene they orbited, these tapes were issued in scant quantities, rendering his pieces as private secrets shared and duplicated in small concentric circles. Aside from a sole, avowedly traumatic performance, the material was never shared in a live context.

G.I. Gurdjieff was an Armenian and Greek philosopher, spiritual teacher, and musician, whose teachings of The Fourth Way influenced thousands worldwide and created communities that still exist to this day. His goal was to teach humans to reach a higher consciousness out of the "waking sleep" he considered most to be living in. Music was an important part of his teachings and these brilliant harmonium improvisations were recorded in 1949 in Paris, just a short time before his death. Droning and ethereal, these beautiful pieces mark a pinnacle in the work of a legend of human spirituality.
