Left of centre experiments from the Dutch underground of yesteryear. Muziekkamer was the name of the home recording studio that gave birth to the twelve tracks on 'Popmuziek', an intriguing document of sketch arrangements and primitive, fairytale sampling wave cuts. This is music which excels due to its inherent naivety; the limitless ambition of 'Black Box' almost sounding like a precursor to the 90s ambient techno of Likemind or Stasis. On 'Being Home Tonight' we can hear an early form of what the likes of Tolouse Low Trax have been bringing to the forefront of contemporary club culture whilst the erratic art-rock of 'Walkman' mirrors what Leven Signs & co were doing over the pond. In trying to create something which represented 'intrusiveness' as a contrast to an earlier ambient tape the trio incidentally blurred the lines between various musical fashions to come. An amazing snapshot of time and place!

Coletivo Vandalismo kick-start a new 12" series for the Contort Yourself label. Hailing from the city of Porto the duo also DJ under the name GAM and released their debut LP on Lake Haze's Eye For An Eye label. Their music has an immediacy that seems to stem from a background in live performance as opposed to polished studio sessions - an improvisational punk aesthetic that manages to carry this EP so strongly. Wild, crashing fx and unrecognisable vocal distortions layer atop wonky 90bpm drum machine grooves and the pair even show off what may be their turntablism skills on 'Zombie Zombie'. There's a nod to early concrete on the closing track 'Black Sun's Demise' with whirring, mechanical noise motifs suddenly jolting us into punishing gabber-at-33-minus-8 territory. The DIY spirit is alive and well here and the feeling that things could fall apart at any minute just adds to the tension.

Putting the foot to the floor? French duo Haydee's "No Gouvernance" revs and rumbles like a cantankerous, clapped out engine. Rust breaks clean in huge chunks as screams and shouts punch through the thick drum fumes. Industrial legends Hunting Lodge follow in a similarly smog spitting motor, the drunken mechanical tirade that is "De Omnibus Dubitandum." Bass and beats crack and leak in this scarred proto-acid work from 1983. Newcomer Catriel drowns "nbdymksmefeellow" in a sludge of static, indecipherable words gurgle as percussion attempts to save this doomed victim. Giant Swan (Timedance) then take a piece of pipe to "Dare", pounding it with heavy blows, forcing confessions through verbal assault before leaving it more bloody pulp than track. Finally Gotshell (Blueprint) closes with a rumbling double brewed remix of "De Omnibus Dubitandum. A 12" that'll leave speakers blown and listeners in need of a tetanus shot.

Featuring Tracks by EINDKRAK, ANDROMEDA COMPLEX, GDL and CIRCLING VULTURES! It feels like a long time since the last Contort Yourself, addiction will make time drag. Fear not, the peddlers of filth are back with a quintet of past profanity and new nastiness. Unknown Precept's Eindkrak serves up a grease dripping, ball bearing filled dish of Shawarma. After the entre comes a 90s treat. Kirlian Camera's Angelo Bergamini's side project with Celestino Pes under the name Andromeda Complex. Here the partnership offer the drums flailing beast that is The Servant (Extract), tongue lolling, eyes bulging techno brutalism from 1994. 4 sees GDL collide claps and low level bass line abuse as a thick haze gathers. On the flip. L.I.E.S. and Secret Studio scavengers, Circling Vultures are savagely Feasting on the Caucus of the Fallen Divine King before Bunker back row bully Klankman twists his knife into The Servant. Your latest dose of mean musical medicine has been served.

Rough and ready machine tracks from Brazilian producer/December collaborator InnsyterLA Club Resource). CYN002 picks up where Coletivo Vandalismo left off, channeling that same wild, DIY bedroom studio spirit across nine individual recordings. Opening with sprawling synth motifs fighting against a steady rhythm track, 'Desintegrado' sounds like an industrial dub punk trying to channel early Cluster or Moebius and strangely succeeding. The rest of the LP treats us to vaguely Drexciyan, subaquatic electro'Bries') and twisted lo-fi minimalism with bonus eerie monologue samples'Superficial Love'). The one recurring theme on Magnetic Healing is Innsyter's clear love for mournful, post-punk inspired melodies. It comes across loud and clear on almost every track yet never sounds tired. Things eventually draw to a close with the hopelessly romantic new wave instrumental 'Forest Shaman' - a short ballad for all those weary-eyed party-goers who stuck around til the sun came up!

The sixth compilation of mutated machine music from Contort Yourself centres around British industrial pioneers Nocturnal Emissions. The group hack out two thick cuts of oil soaked savagery. Gears crunch and chains clatter as drum machines are minced and mangled for Demon Circuits Bloodbath before the reduced and removed bitterness of Even the Good Times are Bad. L.I.E.S. main man Ron Morelli under the guise of U-202 takes on the static of the '83 original, lonesome rhythms fired into a gaping hollow of echo and decay. There is brief respite, very brief, coming in the haunted strings of Penelope's Fiance. Torrent grinds this short break into dust with EXE 2 Blueprint, a sludge stomper drowned in distortion and dripping with distress. Innsyter (L.A. Club Resource), aka Seixlack, calls time with the hazy house bottle smasher; think fog machines and bodies in the dark and you're getting close. Off-kilter madness all-round!

Contort Yourself has once again gathered the best and boldest from past and present for its fourth EP. To begin with we have the grimacing visage of Volition Immanent, an intense live act made up of Parrish Smith and Mark Van de Maat (Knekelhuis). Behind rawkish distortion, splintered beats and acrid bars screams a boiled anger; a track spitting on the divides of punk and electronics. Nastiness is taken up a notch as noise ne'er-do-wells Zombies Under Stress take over. Static is bent and doubled across thick chords and collapsed clap in the 1986 "Maan Zal Zijn" before the raw and raging battery of "In Onze Tijd." L.I.E.S. regular Svengalisghost grapples with "Maan Zal Zijn, channelling the original's rage into a mechanical monster. The 12" is bookended with bite as Mark Forshaw (Tabernacle/Berceuse Heroique) closes with the tortured and torrential thump of "Submission." A callous, caustic and fervently cruel EP.
