Young Marco mines deep into the 90s era Italian house underground and strikes absolute gold... Part 1 of 2.. This spring, Safe Trip will release Welcome To Paradiso, an expansive retrospective of the Italian dream house sound co-compiled by label founder Young Marco. At the tail end of the 1980s, a new take on deep house began to emerge from Italian studios. 'Dream house' drew inspiration from key U.S deep house records of the period – the spacey melodiousness of Larry Heard's productions, and the rich jazziness of tracks originating in New Jersey in particular – but sounded distinctly different. Its' 'head-in-the-clouds' feel – all rich chords, tactile basslines, fluid piano lines and starry electronics – made 'dream house' a uniquely Italian proposition.First and foremost, the style echoed the wavy, glassy-eyed positivity of the period more than any other. While music in the UK and the low countries was getting faster and heavier, Italy's 'dream house' producers continued to create music shot through with warmth and colourful musicality until 1993. While few 'dream house' records were made after then, its' sounds and loose aesthetic influenced subsequent styles such as trance and progressive house.During its' peak, dream house – or, as it was tagged by leading Italian label DFC, 'ambient house' (echoing the similarly minded work of UK pioneers such as The Orb and The KLF) – could be heard blaring from club sound systems across Europe. The style's popularity was fuelled, in part at least, by the runaway international success of "Sueno Latino".Welcome To Paradiso gathers together some of the finest examples of the style for the first time since the turn of the 90s. It includes a smattering of scene anthems – Key Tronics Ensemble's peerless "Calypso of House", Morenas's "Sonnambulism", the ambient mix of Last Rhythm's Italo-house classic "Last Rhythm" – alongside a swathe of hard-to-find, in-demand and forgotten gems. There are cuts from key players in the movement – the likes of Don Pablos Animals, Sasha (later to find fame with a strong of bouncy, piano-heavy Italo-house cuts), and Dreamatic – plus a string of lesser-known names whose contribution to the evolution of the sound should not be overlooked. Young Marco has also found space for Leo Anibaldi's "Elements", a rare deep house outing from a producer who later helped define the sound of Roman techno.Over the course of two double-vinyl compilations (and one extended digital download package), Welcome To Paradiso celebrates one of the most evocative and imaginative musical styles of electronic music's golden era. Kick off your shoes, turn your gaze skywards, and immerse yourself in the music.

Ecuador's rising son, Nicola Cruz, returns to Multi Culti with Cantos de Vision, a truly visionary EP backed by remixes from Jaja, Argentinian Uji, and Multi Culti's own Thomas Von Party. One of the core artists in Multi Culti's diverse catalog of globally-inspired dance music, Nicola Cruz is deservedly becoming the poster-boy for a new wave of producers that fuse indigenous sounds with internationally professional production, creating something entirely new, sonically. It's a genre that Multi Culti ambassadors Dreems & Thomas Von Party refer to as 'Folklorica,' a psychedelic replanting of folkloric roots, and nowhere is it more skilfully executed than on Nicola's tracks.

Reuniting the best session musicians Japan had to offer to make an album that would evoke the atmospheres of South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations in. Pacific (1978) is a treat to the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relax its listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and that good old 1970’s funk while remaining surprisingly fully instrumental throughout all contributions from artists Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP and an inspiration for a lot of, so called, “vaporware” music.

Copenhagen’s Music For Dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by Jan Schulte.According to all maps and witness accounts, Germany does not officially have any tropical forests. This is of no concern to Schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. Perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in Germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. Most of the tracks picked by Schulte were released on small labels in the late 80's. The musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in Germany. At that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging "world music boom" already snowballing into the mainstream. But these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. Schulte himself points to his "generalfascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. Songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. Somehow I think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks," he explains. We certainly hear it in the extensive use of wildlife samples on both "Tagtraum Eines Elefanten" by Argile and on "Wuhan Wuchang" by Total Art Of Percussion. Or on the repetitive and trace-inducing drum circle re-enactments of Ralf Nowys "Akili Mali" and Bob Moses’ & Billy Martin’s "Boat Song Part II". And while Austrian band Sanza stands out with their interpretation of the traditional folk song "Sounouh", many of the inclusions take an avantgarde stance towards their visions of the tropics. The works of Om Buschmannand Trimopen seem to convey the stark and feverish nature of the jungle and its dangers, without relying on clichés. And while there is certainly a European approach in the production techniques on many of these recordings, the artists created something beyond all templates. In fusing folk music traditions from various corners of the world with avant-garde jazz improvisation and a distinctly European sound, they carved out a path of their own.Düsseldorf-based Jan Schulte has been following this path with his own productions in the past years. During the present resurgence of tribal influences in underground dance music, his recordings under the alias Wolf Müller and Bufiman have stood out as the most interesting, funky and mindblowing within this niche. With the compilation "Tropical Drums Of Deutschland" for Music For Dreams, Jan Schulte re-traces this path to its origins. With the inclusion of two exclusive edits he also engages and re-examines thesetracks and incorporates his own musical expression into the mix.

New LP from Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash and Young Marco. Highly Recommended! In the spring of 2016, Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk got together in the studio for the first time since they recorded Clouds, the critically acclaimed debut album from their Gaussian Curve project.By the time they reconvened in Sterk’s new studio in Amsterdam, a stone’s throw away from the temporary, second-?floor space where they recorded Clouds, much had changed. When they first got together in March 2014, it was for a spontaneous, weekend-?long exploration of shared musical passions. They were merely three new friends expressing themselves, and having huge amounts of fun in the process.By the time they got together again last year, the album they recorded on that famous weekend had taken on a life of its’ own. To their surprise and delight, Clouds had become one of the most admired ambient albums of the 21st century. They’d initially reconvened in the studio to rehearse for their first live performances. It soon become clear that all three members were brimming with ideas for new Gaussian Curve material. Over the four days that followed, and fuelled by the same spontaneous working method that drove Clouds, a new album began to take shape. Although their methodology remained the same, the inspirations were different. Whereas Clouds was intimate by design, The Distance reflects more on spaciousness, distance and time. It is instantly recognizable as a Gaussian Curve record, but feels different in scope and tone. The Distance is a different musical beast to its’ predecessor, but shares the same timeless, emotion-?rich feel that made Clouds such a hit. While the fundamental ingredients remain the same – Masin’s masterly piano and synthesizer work, Nash’s blissful, meandering guitar

The Antinote guys have always been keen on introducing new names to you and this addition to the label’s catalogue makes no exception to the rule: they are pleased to present Sfarot, the debut EP from Alek Lee, a musician currently living in Tel-Aviv..The geographic origin of the artists on the Parisian imprint has never been felt as much as on Alek Lee’s debut 12”. In a very “fourth world” manner, Alek Lee brings together middle-eastern influences in his music with ease and without ever having it sounding cliché: on Harabait and Sfarot (and its dub version), his friends and him play the violin, the bass clarinet and the accordion in a way which reminds of Klezmer music, putting the three songs on the EP in line with both his musical education and his cultural background. This seems strikingly true when taking into account the process Alek Lee went through to record the tittle-track: the original material used in Sfarot comes from a recording Lee did a few years, and on which were recorded traditional songs Israeli children used to learn at school, performed by a choir of very young kids. Both conceptually and musically hypnotizing, Sfarot and its dub version take the listener on a slightly psychedelic tripas the haunted voices from the kids loose themselves in long reverbs and are backed by a wide range of instruments played by the Israeli musician including an electric organ, percussions, etc.And if you are still in need of more dubby excursions, the closing track is the one for you.

The thrid an final installment of archive material, selected by Antinote. A killer suite if you ask us. TIP! .You can trail away with it. It is easy to enter, but hard to drop out. Tolouse Low Trax just needs an MPC, a small Synthesizer set up and some effects to create subliminal hypnotic music trips, driven by dark synthlines and drunken shuffled patterns. “The primitiveness in my music is linked to something simple, and that don’t have to be obligatory minimal. For me it is enough to dance rough around the core. Music you don’t shape till the end contains of a moment of beauty. A veil of secrecy. I work very simply. I rather reduce my possibilities in ompass. Limitations offer lots of liberties.” He reveals about his work ethic. Even if his music sounds darker then any ever experienced night, he mostly produces it in the morning in his highly inspirational studio home. During the dark times of the day Tolouse Low Trax mostly performs live around the globe. Or hangs out in his second home: the Salon Des Amateurs club bar in Dusseldorf, which he once founded and where he held until today two weekly DJ residencies. The moments and atmospheres he inhales during these lightless moments are mirrored in his shadowy music, about which he also confesses: “My art is more a cinematic, literally idea of a large to explore Megacity. This is one of the pictures I would link to my music.” On “???” part one he now offers five sounding visions about that “Megacity”. They listen to mysterious names like “Hidden Flat” or “Studies in Drama”. They are nervous. They have ephemeral pieces of dub, Industrial, wave or Italian library music. And at times strangealienated voice samples dance within his highly addictive arrangements. Words can't express their magic. But one thing is fore sure: his hypnotic dance-not-dance tracks do not only illuminate so-called freaks!

This release journeys to mid-80s Argentina and the highly sought after 2nd solo album of Carlos Cutaia. Inspired by the new electronic sounds emanating from Europe, this multi-instrumentalist offers more than a pastiche, embedding his own melancholy in a unique and classic "nueva wave" album. Classically trained, Carlos Cutaia started as a composer for dance and theatre, before spending much of the 1970s as a member of a number heavy rock, prog rock and rock-fusion bands of some note, before finally going solo with the City Of Distant Tones album in 1983. However, by the time of his 2nd solo album in 1985, as his country finally left behind a long period of military control and enjoyed greater freedoms, Carlos was fully immersed in the new electronic pop sounds imported with hungry ears from Europe.Teaming up with fellow composer, keyboardist and producer, Daniel Melero and Alejandro Oucinde, the futurism of Kraftwerk and Gary Numan's Tubeway Army was embraced, but also adapted to fit their native land, just as it was understand a new modernity.Starting with the swagger of Visiones Incomunicadas, the template is set. Sharp drum machines, semi-nonchalant, half spoken vocals set the scene, while chopped guitar and smart synth lines fit the over riding feeling of an intelligent nonchalance.Things however, do go beyond the straightjacket of Euro-pop as heard on the anthemic Programacion and avant twist of the first of two piano-ambient pieces Aproximacion Dos - and it's companion piece "Uno" found on the b side). Eric Satie and minimalism are clearly not far away. However, it is side B opener Sensacion Melancolica that captures the sound to perfection. A Balearic masterpiece, capturing in it's title the over-riding atmospheric of a unexplained sadness, a loss. Operativo and the poem Humanos De America bring things to an end - of a "feeling melancolica."

The eclectic brother of Vangelis chit> he was playing keyboards like him, helped by Yorgos Pentzikis for the "vocoder" vocals, reached the right sound for one of the craziest electronic disco song now available for for the first time on 12, containing also the unreleased instrumental version. Nikos Papathanassiou in 1976 achieving success with the disco-hit "U" by Chrisma, but Maurizio Arcieri cousin of Pino Presti and Chrisma's leader, moved towards new-wave and punk. So for the orchestral conducting of a new cosmic-disco project titled MoreI Like It he involved Rodolfo Grieco who later produced in the emerging genre of Italo-Disco great classics like "Going Crazy" by Lily Ann."

If you’re setting out on an epic voyage to the electronic disco universe, it pays to recruit an experienced pilot. When it comes to intergalactic musical fusion, few are quite as experienced as cosmic disco pioneer and noted dancefloor explorer Daniele Baldelli.Produced alongside friend and regular studio partner Dario Piana, Zero Gravity cannily updates Baldelli’s early ‘80s cosmic disco blueprint for the 21st century. We think that the EP contains some of his strongest music to date, with each of the three cuts offering subtle nods to the Italian maestro’s original Cosmic Club ethos. A-side “Infinity Machine” expertly combines many of Baldelli’s greatest musical inspirations into one mind-bending late night workout. Underpinned by a druggy, arpeggio style bassline, the track rises and falls through waves of funk-rock guitars, crunchy Clavinet lines and intertwined synthesizer solos. Throw in jammed-out electric pianos, and you have a near perfect fusion of cosmic disco and blazed funk-rock.The producer’s long-held love of African rhythms surfaces on “If You Drive”, where bold acid bass, ricocheting percussion hits and weightless chords combine beautifully with starry melody lines and vintage analogue synthesizer motifs. It’s Afro-cosmic for the nu-disco generation.A fine EP is completed by “Air Lock”, in which Baldelli and Piana pepper a rubbery, electrofunk-influenced groove with cascading synthesizer melodies, swirling pads and a swathe of fuzzy, eyes-closed guitar solos. It’s bold and assertive, but also as otherworldly and stratospheric as you’d expect from a pioneer at the peak of his powers.

Emotional Rescue starts its 5th year by shining a light on one of Europe's best underground 80s' label in Spain's Auxilio De Ciento. Their Terra Incognita Volumes I and II collated an international mix of synth-pop, new wave, world and industrial sounds to a small but appreciative following. Released in 1985 and 1986, the Volumes have become highly regarded and rightly sought after, finding a place in discerning playlists from London to Amsterdam and Dusseldorf to Glasgow. Here, taking a premise of avoiding the songs unearthed on other recent reissues, is a unique album itself. Starting with Denis Mpunga & Paul K's esoteric Criola, a fusion of fourth world ideals and poly-rhythmic funk. The music of Mal, Bene Gesserit and La Caida De La Casa Usher, however, soon highlight that the decade also belonged to dark, minimal synth as to shiny balearic ideals. The inclusion of Hector Zazou with Bony Biyake and their contribution Komba, is a fitting continuation from their cult Noir Et Blanc LP before, things continue with US avant-artist Danny Alias and his humorous Big Brother "response" to Laurie Anderson's Superman O. Image Pour Image loose indie-pop and the inclusion of seminal Beast Of Burden lead again to a Zazou contribution, this time in his collaborative Stranger In A New Light, before the compilation eclectically ends with the dadaesque Lakota and the post punk dub of Instead Of's closer, Angels .

While the story of Jah Wobble, from post-punk bassist to Tube driver to world music explorer is well documented, the fact he founded his own label, Lago Records, at the age of just 23 years old has oft been overlooked. Lago Records was set up by John "Wobble" Wardle soon after his acrimonious departure from college friend John Lydon's Public Image Ltd band at the end of the recording of the Metal Box sessions. Although still young, Wobble had already experienced a music career most would dream of and was experienced enough and singular in his thinking that while now working with both Island and Virgin Records, he did not want to be constrained by the traditional label / artist format and release schedule. With a mindful of music ideas and working with a group of friends and musicians, Lago allowed Wobble to express his wider musical interests that now forms it's own unique document in time. This release takes a collection of songs from the 6 EPs released on the label between 1981 and 1985 and captures some of his best ever music, covering a wide palette including dub, jazz, spoken word and even some pop sensibilities, all held together by his instantly discernable bass rumble. The driving post-punk-dub of Invaders Of The Heart is clear a link to the PiL years, while the psychedelic nature of Long Long Way and Fading offer long, drug-induced meditations. Nocturnal and East take this further with long-form instrumental experiments, before both Voodoo and the now highly sought after Blowout take in (Balearic) pop touches that the mid-80s were beginning to encapsulate. Packaged with DJs in mind as much as for the "Heads", the Lago Years double pack is a revelation to those who thought they knew the Jah Wobble sound and offers a perfect framing of a unique musical journey.

The eye of the storm: welcome to Tornado Wallace’s debut album! The accumulation of about four years of work, with tracks written in Berlin and Melbourne, ‘Lonely Planet’ is nothing like you may have expected from the Australian expat. No stranger to fans and followers of ESP Institute, Beats in Space and Music From Memory’s sister Label Second Circle, Tornado Wallace’s strain of releases so far merged functionality with a musical playfulness that led him to find himself as one of the producer’s behind José Padilla’s International Feel album. Here, he leaves the needs of the dance floor behind in order to create a magical mystery tour de trance into his and our inner jungle. How about some references? New Age sounds meet new wave melodies, Grace Jones runs into the Dire Straits at Compass Point, while a Korg Mini Pops and a Roland CR78 make amends for Sly & Robbie’s absence, Michael Mann pictures Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’, Robert Rauschenberg tries his luck at naturalism and an imagined Wally Badarou echoes through all of it. Sandwiched between the title track and the yearning beauty of the album’s final point ‘Healing Feeling’, you get all of that as well as collaborations with and contributions of NO ZU, David Hischfelder and the voice of Sui Zhen on ‘Today’, who would easily make Anna Domino take her proverbial hat off. Tornado Wallace created an album that supersedes the requirements and expectations of a debut. Like a lost Island Records or a never released Made to Measure album, ‘Lonely Planet’ soundtracks notions and ideas that recall the nostalgic future in the past as much as it looks ahead.

Standard edition comes in plain white cover!Claremont 56 has always had close links with Japan’s vibrant music scene, with founder Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy making annual trips for DJing and live performances. It’s perhaps unsurprising, then, that the label’s latest limited-edition vinyl release comes from Japanese outfit Okinawa Delays, a project founded by producer, DJ and long-time friend of the label Takeo. Some of you may already be familiar with Okinawa Delays thanks to 2016’s Hana, a cover of a popular 1995 J-pop hit featuring original vocalist Satoko Ishimine. The singer is a wellknown performer in her native Japan, having released a number of acclaimed records on Toshiba EMI throughout the 1990s.Ishimine’s breathtakingly beautiful vocals come to the fore on “Nariyma Ayagu”, Okinawa Delays’ first single for Claremont 56. On his spellbinding remix, regular Claremont 56 contributor Phil Mison wraps Ishime’s haunting vocals around dreamy, drifting synthesizer and electric piano chords, glistening acoustic guitars, and sparkling, sunrise-friendly electronics.Even by the Balearic maestro’s usual high standards, Mison’s remix is stunning. It’s accompanied by a vocal-free, delay-laden dub for those who want to revel in his poignant, mood-enhancing production. On the flip, and on Murphy’s suggestion, Ishimine re-joins Okinawa Delays for a cover of Kamiko Kasai’s popular 1977 Japanese disco cut “Vibration”. Breezier, looser and notably sunnier than Kasai’s version, the Okinawa Delays interpretation moves further towards jazzfunk whilst retaining the original’s groovy positivity. With Ishimine providing another stellar vocal performance, Takeo’s assembled band delivers the goods, and then some. Claremont 56 will release Nariyama Ayagu in April 2017. Only 324 Copies will see the light of the day!

Modern Classics Recordings holds the lens up to a special split album created by one of the driving forces behind the groups This Heat and Camberwell Now – drummer Charles Hayward – in collaboration with Italian musician Gigi Masin, whose looping, rhythmic, electronic compositions have seen his cult following grow in his four decades as a recording artist.Originally released on Belgium’s Sub Rosa label in 1989, “Les Nouvelles Musiques De Chambre Volume 2” is a split LP on which Masin’s eight tracks occupy side A and Charles Hayward’s long-form piece (at 21 minutes long), "Thames Water Authority”, occupies side B. Geography may have separated the two artists, who each recorded their pieces in isolation from the other, but there’s a commonality to their approach. Previously, Masin had released the inspired 1986 album “Wind”, while Hayward’s music had long been influenced by the landscape and society of London and the UK.For this album, the label challenged the two musicians to write about the waterways of their respective cities, Venice and London. For Masin, that meant describing the human interactions related to the Italian city’s famous landmarks. For Hayward, it meant describing the physicality of water, the “densities and energies” as he puts it, and the politics of it too. This release marks the first ever vinyl reissue since the original release in 1989. All audio material got restored and remastered. The LP is housed in a deluxe Stoughton “tip-on” jacket with track notes by Gigi Masin and Charles Hayward. This LP also features the Masin track “Clouds” as sampled by To Rococo Rot and Björk.

Following the success of the percussive heavy debut Wu Du Wu on Second Circle, the return to the studio for Christian and Jan Schulte and this resultant EP is a true coming together of cross-generational minds.Unfolding across 3 songs of subtly and beauty; mood, structure and atmospherics form in a post-Balearic meets psychedelic haze.Lilting piano start before dub bass and Dominik's refrain melts its way in Rheinfahren. Voids open, minds expand, felds walked, oceans crossed, seas parted, wind pushes against the face, rolling hills, cloudy skies, sun, sand, love, lost, found, deeper and deeper it goes in to your soul. The uber flow continues at a slower pace with Tangerine (Krauter Mix) taking things down but carrying the interplay between artist's continues as if made for each other. Guitar hooks in multiple layers, finger clicks, pots 'n pans vibes gently taking you from Formentara to Tisno, Malibu, Tulum or wherever your heart lies restful. Finally, Guten Morgen Bromio is the (bro)mance to end any affair. Hip Hop roots, Jan's mouth-harp underlaying, Dominik's licks and Christian's dub fx laiden 'Spector' commandments shuffle together until group vocals bring them finally to completion.A wonderful EP bringing together 3 artists and 2 labels for the love of music.

Some 18 months on from the release of his acclaimed Exit Strategies 12”, Jonny Nash returns with Eden, an album recorded in Bali and the United Kingdom throughout 2016. While many of his aural trademarks are present - think glistening guitars, drifting synthesizer chords and subtle piano motifs - Eden feels a little different: humid, dense and decidely "murkier" than previous outings.Check, for example, the gently pulsing rhythms, layered vocal samples and hazy ambient house era textures of "Maroon Crisp", or the sparkling melodies, chiming percussion and bubbly drum machine matters of "Ding Repair"; both tracks are as beautiful and life-affirming as you'd expect, but feel far more widescreen in vision. Eden is full of these kind of moments. There's the undulating mysticism of "Conversations With Mike", the delay-laden, outer-space ambience of "Down At Babakan", and the crystal clear brilliance of closer "Lime".

At times, the way the voice skipped intermittently, the recording sounded like an exercise in Uncle Bill's scissors technique but in my defence the mic I was using was hidden. I knew Jean was recording me, he'd asked for an interview after finding my name in one of his black notebooks, Jean didn't know I was recording him. He was tuning into fading echoes and when he thought the tape machine was off he left an echo of his own. "I caused such scenes on the way to and at kindergarten that first day my mother never bothered risking damage to my nascent psyche by making me return. Consequently come first grade my petulance had precluded me fromthe nursery school forged friendships of my new classmates. It's why I've always been an observer. But I've never been an archivist. I never wrote the intimate details down. If you fix them on paper there's a danger of shared ownership. The black notebooks contain coded references, the meaning once obvious now somewhat cryptic. Names, some possibly anagrammatical and numbers, presumably long dead phone lines. There are a few sketches but no photographic evidence of any kind. This to most of the population, with it's need for minute by minute high def validation, sounds like a curse. I, however, feel blessed. Evidence is the enemy. Magick for me is the carp in Herman's monastery pond. Brief flashes of gold as i disturb the murky silt of memory." It's there that one of the only two recordings of Jean's voice comes to an end. Jean has his copy obviously but If I know Jean it's long been lost or destroyed.

'10 years of Because Music' Re-EditionAt the start of the 70.s, France had no petrol, but it had ideas and artists that managed to tip them into the 21st Century 30 years in advance. Cosmic Machine compiles 20 rare tracks put together with passion and erudition by Uncle O (who previously did the Shaolin Soul compilations) and throws together a collection of stars, a few free-spirits, and also shooting stars. This group of people don.t form a scene per say, they.re more like a collection of individuals who, through sheer ingenuity and with all their singularity, managed to break down the barriers between pop and experimental to give birth to a mutant variety of electronic music that owes as much to mobile discos as sound illustration, to the GRM, to the Bogdanoff brothers, to Métal Hurlant and the European Space Program. Cosmic Machine is a panoramic dive into this epic era when the synthesizer was man.s best friend and when the future had a future: our present time.

TIP! .Made of 14 sketches - each reflecting one of the many shades of the label’s catalogue - Five years of Loving Notes features new names as well as those of artists who have been involved with the label since it’s very beginning, like Geena or Iueke - responsible for the first 12” released on Antinote. The music on this compilation covers a wide spectrum of moods and atmospheres, from the dark and raw excursions from Tolouse Low Trax or Iueke to the lush instrumental crafted by Nico Motte and Syracuse’s Antoine Kogut; however as the listener gets deeper into the compilation, the whole of the tunes, sitting side by side on the records, start to make sense as they all seem to point towards the same direction. If one should try isolating a common trait from all these songs, one might come to the conclusion that it lies in the way they all speak directly to the listener’s emotional receptors, unvarnished and without abusing of producer’s “tricks”.We’ll let the tricky question mentioned before in your hands once you will have been through this 63-minute long testimony of exclusive music by the artists who have been shaping Antinote’s sound for five years; from the opening Latvian arabesques from Domenique Dumont to the Pink-Floyd-ian ending from the latest addition to the label, Alek Lee, via Leonardo Martelli’s smoggy electro and Raphael Top Secret’s ominous talk-over.

Cruising the highways and byways between proto-techno, horror disco and forlorn wave, Fairplay conjures up his creations from metal and smoke. Saturated snares, clipped claps and warbling chords are dusted with distortion. And this idea of distortion, manipulation and the blurred line is omnipresent. Innocent and sinister, cruel and playful, accepted boundaries are brazenly ignored as engines growl and synthlines soar.

In revisiting the epic journey of José Manuel's debut album "Excursion Africanism", the Copenhagen based Music For Dreams have procured remixes from like-minded producers to lend an additional layer to the afro-inspired dance music of Manuel. Turkish multi-instrumentalist Islandman (who recently released an EP on Music For Dreams) strips and slows down elements of "Babylon" and offers a more laid back and spacious version of the track, adding his kosmische guitar playing to the mix. Also of Turkish decent, Berlin-based producer and international touring DJ Mehmet Aslan grabs hold of the album’s only ambient track "Voices of Afrika" and turns it into his own creation entirely. Bearing almost no resemblance to the original, Aslan’s remix is a dubby leftfield jam with far out guitar noodling and industrial-sounding drum machine breakdowns. Intense and defiantly orchestrated for the darkest corners of the dance floor. And for those who wondered about the curiously titled album track "Excursion Africanism (Part 3)" we get another piece of that puzzle from Manuel himself, with the inclusion of part 1 (plus a more stripped down Percussion Dub version to boot). Essentially a raw tribal groove with a hypnotic repetitious chant, this makes for a perfect DJ tool to complete this heavy release

Besides acting in lot of movies and musical plays, Susana as a singer also released a few 45s, cassettes and one LP, “Amor y Libertad”, produced by the great Josep Llobell, which is now regarded as a Cosmic Disco classic. From that album, we’ve selected two tracks for Side A of this 12”, “Gózame ya” and “Quítate el sostén”. Pinkman stoke the furnaces of despair, fuelling them with Black Merlin. Conveyor belts grunt out resentment, cold chords curl, synthlines sneer and pallid percussion punctuates. Noise echoes above, hammered clanks exploding into shards. Below the work continues, sweat smeared stains and hissing airless gasps. In the end, all is swallowed; gulped into the gaping assembly line.

Emotional Rescue presents a limited edition 7 with two songs that while not featuring on the Stollwerck Sampler reissue (ERC026), make a unique piece together as they are focused around the legendary drumming of Jaki Liebezeit. Coming out of the European Free Jazz movement of the mid-60s, by the end of decade Liebezeit had moved towards psychedelic realms of rock and alongside Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli and David C. Johnson formed the pioneering 'Krautrock' band, Can, in 1968. His unique half-man, half machine metronome style was integral to the band's development and success throughout the following decade, a centre-piece to their sound as they became acclaimed international stars. With the slow hiatus that engulfed Can in 1980 each member went on to work on new projects. For Leibezeit, this saw him team up with guitarist Dominik Von Senger to form Phantom Band. Releasing just 3 albums, each are highly regarded, encompassing an extension of latter-day Can's funky-jazz fusion with metronomic rock and experimenting with African rhythms. Out of this came the Von Senger led Dunkelziffer (ERC007/8/9), all centered around the warehouse art spaces of Stollwerck. When the recordings for a special Sampler album bought together various artists and bands based in the space it was logical that Liebezeit would be heavily involved. The Sampler's LP collage of post-punk, krautrock, dub and avant-garde music saw many unusual collaborations and for this limited 7 we present two such pieces, including the first ever recording of his drum ensemble, Drums Off Chaos. First, Phantom Band team up with the unknown Linear Johnson & The Protons. A mixture of krautrock meets 50s USA rock'n'roll delivery makes for a wondefully odd combination, but the interplay between drums and Von Senger's guitar marry with R&B vocals to jovial perfection. On the flip, here then are the beginnings of Liebezeit's Drums Off Chaos. Some 5 minutes of pure drumming explosions, this unique recording was not followed up for a further 20 years and is therefore, a special document in a comprehensive music career.

Copenhagen-based label Music For Dreams are extremely proud to unleash the debut album of Sweden’s Prins Emanuel.Released in double vinyl format, Emanuel’s first full length solo project is a concept album revolving around the medium of the record itself. With a functionalist’s attitude, each of the vinyl records can serve a different purpose. Translated from Swedish, the album title literally reads "Work/Leisure Time" and the contrasting moods of the two discs are meant to reflect. So on a Friday evening, you might tell your girl or boy to put on the A/B sides as you're getting ready to bust some moves that night. And on Sunday evening, you tell him/her to put on the C/D sides as you're relaxing and tapping up a bath. Although this is a multi-instrumentalist’s vision, the fact that Prins is primarily a drummer is clearly evident in the masterful hypnotic grooves that form the base on which the whole album stands. And while elements of dub, boogie, afro, house and new age flicker by as we ride along on these motorik rhythms, the balance between warmth and repetition provokes a constant tickling irrestistible tension. For fans of the young Swede’s former output with the Fasaan/Chalice label (especially his collaborations with label mate Golden Ivy), this superb LP will surely not disappoint. Limited vinyl edition - don’t miss.

After putting the band on the map with their first EP two years ago, the band Feathered sun has grown into a life of it’s own. The more live sets they have played, the better they have defined their style. They are spearheading a brand of “sound healing music” abstractly narrative, always poetic, sometimes flirting with darkness but always perfectly produced to carry the audience into their own world. Feathered Sun are the collaborative experiment of Nu, Jo.Ke, Raz Ohara, Chris Schwarzwaelder, Iannis Ritter and Acid Pauli Johannes Laumer. Each have active and flourishing solo artist careers, albeit still have time to collaborate with one another. The six-strong collective are a close-knit troupe who are primarily based in Berlin and Lima, Peru. Live improvisation is ultimately what brought the Feathered Sun project to life - they are open about their laidback, impromptu approach and this is apparent throughout this EP. Side A was primarily crafted in Peru by Chris Schwarzwaelder and Jo.Ke with Raz Ohara’s mesmerising vocals. The end material was then sent to Nu in Berlin who crafted two tracks out of it. The ‘Bulbo’ EP shows a willingness to explore different approaches within the collective and the music showcases their long-standing affiliation. It is a downtempo EP that has immaculate instrumentation, dreamy pads and brooding vocals throughout. This is intertwined with organic sounds and moody atmospheric melodies, gives the release a timeless and emotive ambience.

After launching with a killer reissue of a private press gem from MorrisonKincannon, Spacetalk presents its’ first compilation: a superb selection of soul, disco and boogie obscurities curated by noted Parisian crate-digger and DJJeremy Underground.Beauty has its’ origins in a chance encounter between Jeremy and Spacetalkco-founder and Psychemagik Danny McLewin at Maceo’s, Glastonbury’srenowned backstage bar. Having completed his regular festival set – keepingthe dancefloor moving with his more familiar house and U.S garage sound –Jeremy was treating the Maceo’s crowd to a tasty selection of soul, disco andboogie obscurities. Danny was impressed, introduced himself to the My Love IsUnderground label founder, and several hours later the duo had hatched a planfor Spacetalk’s first compilation.Jeremy Underground is well regarded within the record collecting community, and counts a number of high-profile “diggers” amongst his friends. He famouslyplayed alongside Red Greg at Floating Points’ first You’re A Melody party atPlastic People back in 2013, the four-hour recording of which is still available onthe Eglo website. The Parisian is also no stranger to putting together high qualitycompilations, having previously mined his house collection for two volumes ofMy Love Is Underground on Favorite Recordings. Beauty, though, is the firstcollection to showcase the depth and variety of his record collection. Stuffed fullof rare, hard-to- find and little-known gems, it confirms the Frenchman’s statusas one of Europe’s most open-minded record collectors.Amongst its’ 15 tracks you’ll find the Creative Arts Ensemble’s spiritual soul-jazzgem “Unity”, the samba sunshine of Leila Pinheiro, the folksy, Latin-tingedbreeziness of Ron Rinadli’s “Mexican Summer”, and the dewy-eyed, late nightsoul of Nu-Cleus’s ridiculously hard-to-find “Needing A Woman”.The beating heart of the compilation, though, is a selection of heady, heartwarmingcuts that blur the boundaries between Philly soul, disco, jazz-funkand boogie. These include the sparkling, synth-laden 1981 boogie of “Do YourDance” by Shades Of Love (whose members included future ‘80s soul/discostar Meli’sa Morgan), the jazz-funk inspired library grooves of Christer Norden’s“Lay Back”, and the smooth, post-boogie soul of Richardi Mac’s superb “Told YouSo”. Oh, and “Let Love Flow” by Jamaican singer Sonya Spence, a deliciouslysweet and loved-up disco-soul shuffler infused with the distinctive swing of theCaribbean. These are just some of the highlights; repeat listens will uncover new favourites, hidden gems, and impossible-to- find cuts from the crates of one of Europe’smost celebrated DJs.

For their third release the Basel centred Fleeting Wax family turn their attention to their chess obsessed buddies, Karpov Not Kasparov. The Bucharest mastermind's Vocal version of Choose Your Colour Gipsy Dark gets the remix treatment from fellow Romanians Khidja, label boss Mehmet Aslan as well as a special collective effort from the artists behind the label. The original track was first created for a fashion show during a protest movement in Bucharest and has gone on to become a favourite for those surrounding the Fleeting Wax crew. In the show the models were women from marginalised gypsy communities who donned outfits from well known Romanian designers. The release adds another layer of poignancy as it brings together again the partnership led to The Mechanical Turk remix which has become an anthem for adventurous DJs worldwide and helped push the heavily eastern influenced sound that is sweeping dancefloors across Europe and beyond. The three remixes build on the spacey, smokey atmosphere of the original, exploring the trippy influences at it's heart. Romanian hardware obsessives Khidja turn in a typically jacking, infectious Chicago influenced remix, keeping things heady with the track's doom laden vocal. Mehmet Aslan's chugging remix brings the seductive melodic flavours of the orient to bear once more on the dancefloor with all the coolness and restraint he has become known for. The first ever Fleeting Wax remix is a spacey, Italo inspired reworking based on airy drums and a constant undulating bass line that tempers the drama of the ascending melodies.

On the flip, the pace slows down with Pirate Of The Lost Ark. This dark mesmeric number features Moscoman’s signature gritty bass style, rolling snare drums and swirling synths all mantled in mind bending effects. The bpm rises again on the closing track Forget The Rest, an irresistible amalgam of dreamy keys and rumbling drums, punctuated by a catchy electronic funk.Snake & Pygmy is the second of twelve releases for Moscoman’s Treisar label.

It was the spring of 2007 when Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Kevin Pollard announced the arrival of the former’s Claremont 56 label with “Villa Stavros”, a magical first collaborative 12”. It seems somewhat fitting, then, that Claremont 56’s final release of its’ first decade will be N7 Odyssey, the first collaborative album from Mudd & Pollard. By the time “Villa Stavros” came out, the pair had already been regular studio buddies for a couple of years. Initially, Murphy had recruited Pollard – a hugely talented keyboardist and composer – to play on tracks he was working on for Rong Music. One thing naturally led to another, and soon they were joining forces to make music as Murphy’s home studio in Holloway, North London. As the years rolled by, further acclaimed singles followed “Villa Stavros” – the bubbly, Rhodes-laden Balearic disco shuffle of “Vincent”, and the lilting, intergalactic dub disco of “Scaffold”, most notably – before the duo’s other musical commitments began to take precedence. Murphy had his hands full running the Claremont 56 and Leng labels, while Pollard carved out a successful career as a soundtrack composer for both film and television. Now, the album they set out to make all those years ago is finally finished and ready to be released. N7 Odyssey – titled in tribute to the Holloway studio they recorded in for many years before Murphy moved – draws together freshly re-mastered versions of their previously released singles with a clutch of previously unheard tracks. Built around the duo’s own fine musicianship, with Pollard handling synths, keyboards and electric piano, and Murphy guitar, bass and percussion, the album’s ten tracks offer a musical journey through their shared love of shuffling grooves, sun-kissed soundscapes and gentle positivity.Highlights come thick and fast. There’s the swirling strings, fluttering flutes, jammed-out electric pianos and heady female vocals of “Far Away”, the enchanting new age ambience of “December”, and the rush-inducing Balearic disco breeze of “Mawson’s Walk”, a former single blessed with sublime horn solos and rising, cinematic strings. Check, too, the headnodding beats, fluid electric piano solos and jazzy guitars of “Inatin”, the gentle Eastern mysticism and vintage ambient house aesthetics of “Anura”, and the ultra-deep house pulse of “N7 Odyssey”. The album fittingly finishes with a sublime ambient interpretation of “Scaffold”, arguably the duo’s most celebrated track. It may have taken a decade to emerge, fully formed, but Murphy and Pollard have delivered an album that’s beguiling, magical, and hugely comforting. Clearly, it’s an odyssey worth taking.

Copenhagen’s Music For Dreams cements its reputation as a label to watch with this new compilation of label boss Kenneth Bager’s favourite ‘Balearic Biscuits’ - eight of his tastiest secret weapons for the most eclectic and adventurous dancefloors brought together in one essential vinyl double pack. The opener comes from Dusseldorf's ‘Saloon De Amateurs’ resident Jan Schulte aka Wolf Müller aka Bufiman. ‘Basedrum Party’ is a tribal funky jungle beat with strong percussion. Throw in some weird and wonderful synth stabs and you have a very original and special crowdpleaser - Kenneth's personal favorite record of last year. José Manuel delivers a great percussive tribal groove called ‘Macumba’ that shifts direction half way through, with a Doors organ vibe washing over the African continent. Mehmet Aslan is on remix duties for ‘Mechanical Turk’ by Karpov Not Kasparov and his Turkish Bazaar roots shine through in a mesmerising epic nine minute musical journey of pure quality. Jan Schulte once again twists his beats on his remix of Africaine 808 resulting in a hypnotic floorfiller full of energy. Kenneth Bager’s electronic disco and Fela-inspired ‘Biological Bread’ was recorded by him in Copenhagen then mixed by Tuccinelli in Ibiza and recalls an African Kwanza Posse mood. The 10 minute anthemic ‘Hafi Deo’ from 1985 by African Rumba singer-songwriter Tabu Ley Rochereau is a real winner showcasing his unique way of mixing Congolese folk music with Caribbean beats yet still sounding contemporary. Another special inclusion is the highly sought-after Kenneth favorite ‘I Think You Are Boring’ which was self-released in 1989 by 380 Volt Electric Papa - timeless drum machine overlaid with some very strange Italo-English lyrics. Finally ‘Fork Power’ by Grooveman Spot, a thunderous and amazing percussive powerful DJ mixing tool for peaktime heaven on any dancefloor. A special release for true collectors of the weirder and wonderful... Limited vinyl 300.
