Only the very best soul ballads will make it onto our reactivated Deep Soul label and there can be no argument that Eddie Parker’s ‘But If You Must Go’ deserves its first UK release. The US MAM Miko label sells for an astonishing $1500 + and it’s a five minute slowy. Debbie Taylor’s classy ‘All That I Have’ is the first time on vinyl for this George Kerr and Larry Saunders beauty on which she is backed by the Hesitations.

Ace’s access to the Stax vaults in the 90s lead to some historic tracks being heard by soul fans for the first time. The ones by the major acts like Otis, Carla and William Bell hit the headlines but the lesser artists demonstrated what talent they had on previously unheard musical gems. Both the Charmels’ ‘I’ve Done It Again’ and L.V. Johnson’s ‘Seeing Is Believing’ are simply breathtakingly beautiful soul records that anyone with an interest in the music will appreciate as truly great records.

Many people’s favourite soul singer James Carr performs two classic songs that were discovered on Goldwax’s tapes some years back but appear on a single for the first time. ‘These Arms Of Mine’ was an Otis classic, admired and recorded by many but matched only by Carr’s rendition. ‘Let’s Face Facts’ was recorded by the Masqueraders and yet again Goldwax chose a superb and fitting song for James to perform.

The flip is another beautiful slowie, this time from San Franciscan chanteuse Jeanette Jones. Co-written by Gerry Goffin, ‘What Have You Got To Gain By Losing Me’ is among his finest songs.

Rozetta Johnson’s name is synonymous with the highest quality southern soul, often in conjunction with Sam Dees, who wrote these two sides. ‘I’ve Come Too Far With You (To Turn Back Now)’ was a previously unreleased Clintone master until Kent issued it on CD in 1998. The flip ‘Who Are You Gonna Love (Your Woman Or Your Wife)’ is constantly in-demand and was, appropriately for this label, one of Dave Godin’s all-time favourite recordings.

This intense 1973 recording by the great John Edwards was not on any of his Aware releases and did not surface until 1998 on a Kent Various Artists CD. It has continued to win admirers over the years and is now at last on the vinyl medium it was recorded for. Loleatta Holloway’s ‘This Man’s Arms’ was recorded to be the flip of ‘Bring It On Up’, her 1971 Galaxy single. It was dropped and replaced by an earlier Apache side ‘Rainbow 71’. Kent used that Galaxy edit on the Loleatta CD but used a longer Aware version on a 100 Club anniversary single. This is that much-coveted long version.

It is fitting to have Eddie & Ernie on both sides of a Deep Soul single as they were original label founder Dave Godin’s ultimate Deep Soul act. Both tracks were recorded in the late 60s but first came out on our Eddie And Ernie CD in 2002. It is a tribute to their excellent quality that we release them on this vinyl series now.
