15 dead, 15 funerals, 16 funeral processions, 1 procession with no dead, 5 churches, 1 cemetery, 1 wake. 15 hours of recorded sounds are condensed into a vivid sound portrait depicting the way funerals and burials are lived in the Caribbean island of Haiti. Recorded in Port au Prince by sound artist Félix Blume in early December 2016, Death in Haiti plunges the listener into a world of pain, loss and solemn celebration as each funeral comprises of its own live jazz band as well as a plethora of characters like the joker (le blaguer) who cracks jokes and tales about the recently deceased. A beautiful document of a thriving tradition, a counterpart or updated version of those famous Dirge Jazz records such as the New Orleans' Eureka Brass Band on Folkways.

Release:2016 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Gonzo is the ''why so serious?'' moniker of musician, DJ and discrepant head honcho, Goncalo F. Cardoso. Since starting the label back in 2010 gonzo has released a series of limited collage tapes on the label, “Dies Irae” being the very first one back in 2012. He now decides to give it the vinyl treatment with specially commissioned artwork from Belgium artist, Elzo Durt. “Dies Irae” (aka Latin hymn sung in a mass for the dead) explores the themes of religion, sects, cults and judgement day. It unapologetically stitches together field recordings, sound generators, random loops and 'unfinished' compositions to accompany weird spoken word moments or uncorrectable views and opinions. It kick started the self-penned Gonzo collage style and whether you like or not he's been at it ever since. Featuring spiritual leaders, enlightened gurus, cult leaders and good old fashion lunatics. Guest appearances by Jim Jones, David Koresh and Harold Camping among others. Iain Chambers plays guitars when you hear one.

Two EP's by the Cairo-based artist on one LP. Her love affair with cinema, interrupted by decaying urban life ('New York April-July 2013') and literature ('Two Names Upon The Shore'), serves as the focal point for her intimate productions. These consist of fragmented and wistful soundscapes that combine her affection for the piano with ambient textures from sea-shore to life underground. A unique album to get lost into on long summer nights.

Another unique document of Laurent Jeanneau's collection of surreal soundscapes of augmented field recordings, this time using two very different source recordings to create his own unique brand of alien music. Using contact mic recordings of various Turkish instruments, saz, cura and tanbur (played by Remi Solliez), Laurent Jeanneau alchemically collages them with his archival recordings of South East Asia to create a surreal space between the instrument's tones and resonances with the other-worldly beauty of the field recordings.

Russian occultists Old Komm collaborate with the south Californian dons of austere electronics German Army, bringing to life the made up soundtrack to a film that never was. 'Disquiet' tells the story of a child born to a desolate, post-apocalyptic world, war torn and fractured by greed. As far as the music is concerned, organ tones and broken exoteric bumps coexist with dark ambient themes and cavernous beats.

A vinyl edition of Said's 2015 album. It can be said that without Rizan Said a good number of Syrian singers from the 1990s onward -most notably his collaborator for two decades, Omar Souleyman- might never have been heard. Where synthesizers can bring a certain artifice and death to the sound of music, Rizan's torrential speed and flair on the keys bring new life to Syrian and Kurdish sounds respectfully forcing the component sounds of folkloric dabke into the next level.. This is the updated sound of the ages, where hand drums and reed flutes are now emulated and pounded out on Korg keyboards.

Release:2016 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
First split LP in a brand new series of collaborations, pairing artists working on the fringes - or not at all. This first split pairs Brighton’s Blood Stereo's tape “Gonk” with Hair & Treasure's “Farm Life Loops”. Blood Stereo are Dylan Nyoukis and Karen Constance, a British institution, the sound complete immersion for people who don't immerse easily. Idiot twins Burchill and Slim may behave as though they own Sussex, but Constance and Nyoukis are immune to their surroundings, making livid eyes at confused glitter vixens up and down this squalid isle. Hair & Treasure are Alex Jones and Goncalo F. Cardoso, a prankster randy dust duo from nowhere dwelling on tape loops and webbed finger piano ballads. The material was pulled from a mound of who cares electro-acoustic improvised sessions as an offering to the associated deities of the zwieback buttermilk trade.

Laurent Jeanneau aka Kink Gong ethnic electronic project continues on Discrepant... Since the end of the 90's, Laurent Jeanneau, also an integral Sublime Frequencies contributor, has been recording the music of mostly endangered minorities of South East Asia. Alongside his relentless pursue of remote exotic and unpublished musical traditions, he also started creating electronic versions by combining raw recordings with natural sounds, archive material and electronically treated sounds. For Voices, Laurent based his alternate re-versions around the extensive voice recordings he made on location in the southern regions of Yunnan and Guizhou in China as well as in Sapa, North Vietnam and Phongsaly, Northern Laos. The compositions contain unedited acoustic recordings, computer modified parts, sound collages and acoustic recordings of people and instruments. All tracks were recorded on location and re-arranged by Laurent Jeanneau in Dali, China. Special vinyl one time pressing to 300 copies mastered and cut at Dubplate @ Mastering by Rashad Becker.

A Study Into 21St Century Drone Acoustics
LP | 2015 | UK | Original (Discrepant)
24,99 €*
Release:2015 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Much attention is focused on drones as 'eyes in the sky'. However for people on the ground, the sound of the drones is much more pervasive. Military drones fly at high altitudes and are more often heard than seen. The word drone itself is rooted in sound, referring to the noise of the male honeybee. The sound of drones in areas of conflict create frightening soundscapes that go on for many hours on end. The sound gives them nicknames like Zanana (buzz) in Palestine. In this project, designer Ruben Pater (Drone Survival Guide) and composer Gonçalo F. Cardoso (Discrepant) join hands to focus on the auditive aspects of drones. What engines do drones have, and what do they sound like? Side A features recordings of 17 drone types, ranging from small consumer drones to large military drones, as contemporary bird songs. The B side presents a soundscape by Gonçalo F. Cardoso, inspired by the abusive and destructive power or drone technology. The composition focus on the conceptual (sound) life and death of an aerial drone machine in the 21st century.

Discrepant presents another unique document of Kink Gong's electronic deconstructions this time stepping away fromhis usual South East Asia area of expertise and releasing some of his first re-interpretations and field recordings made inthe late 90's in Tanzania, Africa.''December 1999, Tanzania. I had an appointment with James Stephenson an American friend from the 90s in NYC, heused to skip the American winter every year to be with the Hadzas bushmen and other Tanzanians tribes in Tanzania.Whilst there, James and I lost completely track of time and did not give a shit about what day Christmas was, or NewYears for that matter- with the majority of the planet knowing they were heading into the 21st Century. At some point end of December or early January 2000(?) we asked a group of Hadzas we were hanging out with, “what'sthe date today?” None understood the question but one Hadza who had been sent to school in the early 70s answeredthat we must be in 1975!Tanzania in 1999/2000, this intense trip away from all the millennium bullshit celebrations. I gathered all kinds of sounds, not only music, that expresses proximity and that was the first time I decided I was going to remix those raw recordingsinto a decent soundscape. It was also the first time I was pleased with the result- to go into a direction of redefining worldmusic, away from the commercial clichés. This has been the direction I've taken and focused on ever since with therecomposing of my Asian recordings.''Laurent Jeanneau, Berlin 2015 | Vinyl pressing to 500 copies | Mastered & Cut at Dubplate @ Mastering by Rashad Becker

A life is A Billion Heartbeats', continues Yannis Kyriakides & Andy Moor's exploration and mining of the rich and mysterious terrain of Greek Rebetika music from early 20th century. Their first release of this project (simply entitled 'Rebetika') was for the most part taken from a live recording at the CCA, Glasgow in 2006. For that, Yannis had created processed versions of Andy's favourite Rebetika tunes which served as a matrix or palette onto which both musicians then improvised using electric guitar, live sampling and electronics.
