The borders between London’s musical tribes have always been porous. For Yussef Kamaal, the sound of the capital – with its hum of jungle, grime and broken beat – has shaped a self-taught, UK-tipped approach to playing jazz. In the states, the genre’s long-running to-and-fro with hip hop – from Robert Glasper to Kamasi Washington – has reimagined it within US culture. On Black Focus, Yussef Kamaal frame jazz inside the bass-saturated, pirate radio broadcasts of London. Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazz-funk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment. The pair, made up of Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu), have had little in the way of formal training. Instead, their musical tastes – and approach to playing – are indebted to Thelonious Monk’s piano as much as the drum programming of Kaidi Tatham. “It's all about the drums and the keys,” Williams says. “Not to take anything from anyone else, but that's where it all originates from: the chords, the rhythm of the chords and the drums.” Born out of a one-off live session to perform Williams’ solo material for Boiler Room, it soon became a project in its own right. Coming together as Yussef Kamaal, they played a series of live shows where little more than a chord progression would be planned before taking to the stage Bringing that unspoken understanding to the recording sessions (engineered by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics), the unplanned, telepathically spawned grooves retain the raw energy of their live shows. “It's not so much about complete arrangement, it's more about flow,” Dayes says. “A lot of the tracks are just made spontaneously – Henry will be playing two chords, I'll fill in the groove and we'll just leave the arrangement naturally.” Both hail from South East London, crossing paths in 2007 as teenagers playing their first pub gigs around Peckham and Camberwell. Dayes drums for cosmically-inclined, afrobeat outfit United Vibrations, while Williams – on top of drumming and playing keys in different incarnations over the years – has made waves with his solo, synth-draped house 12"s for much-fêted labels like 22a and Rhythm Section.

This album by Mort Garson was originally released in 1976, following works s.a. The Zodiac's 'Cosmic Sounds' (1967), 'The Wozard Of Iz' (1968) and Lucifer's 'Black Mass' (1971). Every fan of unique psychedelia (The Zodiac) and mind-bending electronic music (the two others) should certainly lend an ear to these three masterpieces, but there was more to come. 'Plantasia' has been labeled "warm earth music for plants and the people who love them". Revealing a sound that was less dark than heard on his previous releases, this Moog-dominated album offers dreamy and colourful compositions that work like a score to an imaginary movie.

Reuniting the best session musicians Japan had to offer to make an album that would evoke the atmospheres of South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations in. Pacific (1978) is a treat to the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relax its listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and that good old 1970’s funk while remaining surprisingly fully instrumental throughout all contributions from artists Haruomi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki, and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP and an inspiration for a lot of, so called, “vaporware” music.

Standard 33rpm edition without gatefold cover.WRWTFWW & Palto Flats Records are ecstatic to announce the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient / minimal album “Through The Looking Glass", originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a Holy Grail of Japanese music by many, “Through The Looking Glass” is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. The fully licensed reissue is available as a single 33rpm LP and a limited 45rpm DLP, both cut directly from the original studio reels (AAA), at Emil Berliner (formerly the in-house recording department of renowned classical record label Deutsche Grammophon) for the 45rpm DLP, and at the equally famous Frankfurter SST Studio for the LP. It is also available in CD format for the first time. All versions come with extensive liner notes. Bio Midori Takada is a composer, multi percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. She will tour Europe this year. Midori released two solo albums: “Through The Looking Glass” and “Tree Of Life” and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body.

It shifts from heavy to chronic as blown-speaker-rap stubs out cigarettes in gated techno enclosures.

New LP from Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash and Young Marco. Highly Recommended! In the spring of 2016, Gigi Masin, Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk got together in the studio for the first time since they recorded Clouds, the critically acclaimed debut album from their Gaussian Curve project.By the time they reconvened in Sterk’s new studio in Amsterdam, a stone’s throw away from the temporary, second-?floor space where they recorded Clouds, much had changed. When they first got together in March 2014, it was for a spontaneous, weekend-?long exploration of shared musical passions. They were merely three new friends expressing themselves, and having huge amounts of fun in the process.By the time they got together again last year, the album they recorded on that famous weekend had taken on a life of its’ own. To their surprise and delight, Clouds had become one of the most admired ambient albums of the 21st century. They’d initially reconvened in the studio to rehearse for their first live performances. It soon become clear that all three members were brimming with ideas for new Gaussian Curve material. Over the four days that followed, and fuelled by the same spontaneous working method that drove Clouds, a new album began to take shape. Although their methodology remained the same, the inspirations were different. Whereas Clouds was intimate by design, The Distance reflects more on spaciousness, distance and time. It is instantly recognizable as a Gaussian Curve record, but feels different in scope and tone. The Distance is a different musical beast to its’ predecessor, but shares the same timeless, emotion-?rich feel that made Clouds such a hit. While the fundamental ingredients remain the same – Masin’s masterly piano and synthesizer work, Nash’s blissful, meandering guitar

A prolific artist with a wide palette of talents, Jaar spent his teenage years in dance music circles in New York City, where he now resides. In 2011, he released his debut album, the critically-acclaimed Space is Only Noise. In 2012, he was contributed to BBC Radio 1's prestigious ‘Essential Mix' series, winning ‘Essential Mix of the Year'. In 2013, Matador released the debut album from Darkside, Jaar's project with his friend Dave Harrington. The band toured the record with a giant, rotating circular mirror, with key performances at Primavera Sound and Coachella. Other notable projects by Jaar include From Scratch, a live concept first developed for MOMA PS1, Pomegranates, an ambient record and alternate soundtrack to the Armenian film The Colour of Pomegranates, and the original soundtrack for´Dheepan, a thriller by the French filmmaker Jacque Audiard about a family of Sri Lankan refugees living in the suburbs of Paris. Dheepan won the Palme D'Or at Cannes in 2015. Jaar is the founder of the New York based imprint Other People, releasing music and spoken word by a diverse group of artists ranging from Lydia lunch to Ezekiel Honig.

Conceived as a kind of sequel to 2012’s Sleep Games, there’s an epic sensibility to Stasis. The haunted concrete caverns of the earlier album give way here, to vast, awe inspiring spaces. The album has a strong narrative flow that can be read either as the soundtrack for an interplanetary voyage under suspended animation, or the exploration of vast inner realms under some other form of technologically enhanced sleep.Martin Jenkins' unique production sound is unmistakable: Carpenter-esque slow kosmiche disco and ambience, woozy synth melodies and somnambulistic grooves with soft, rich textures.

New music from Simon Green aka Bonobo is always an event, but when it heralds the arrival of a whole new album (his first since 2013’s “The North Borders”), it’s really something to get excited about. The masterful, magisterial “Migration” is Green’s sixth album and it’s a record which cements his place in the very highest echelons of electronic music and beyond. It might be difficult to imagine it, but “Migration” will take his beautiful, emotive, intricate music to an even bigger audience. “My own personal idea of identity has played into this record and the theme of migration,” Green explains. “Is home where you are or where you are from, when you move around?” The personal, it seems, can also be universal.

Only 1 per customer!Fifteen years since its original release, The Other People Place's Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café is finally made available again on vinyl. A long-standing favourite among the many legions of Warp fans and rightly considered to be one of the very best electronic albums of all time. It's hard to sum up in words just how important Lifestyles Of The Laptop Café truly is. Originally released back in 2001 as part of the Drexciyan off-shoot Storm Series, Lifestyles was one of the various projects of one-half of deep sea electro pioneers Drexciya, James Stinson. Shrouded in mystery, the two members of Drexciya took the blueprint laid out by the pioneers of the hypnotic groove, Kraftwerk and gave it a truly electro feel - cold, yet funky. Where Drexciya's sound was focused in the deepest corners of the ocean, James's work as The Other People Place was a solo project that turned its gaze elsewhere, most notably in the direction of love.Playing out like the first meeting through the early days of a relationship, the themes of closeness and affection carry a strong theme throughout with tracks like 'Eye Contact' describing those very first seconds of connection, before the story unfolds with the twilight romance of 'Moonlight Rendezvous', and the almost doubt creeps in on the bittersweet 'You Said You Want Me' and the anthemic 'Let Me Be Me'. A track of legendary status amongst the wide-ranging spectrum of electronic music lovers, producers and DJs the world over. With the original vinyl being incredibly hard to find (for a second-hand copy, you are looking upwards of one hundred and fifty quid easily!) this freshly repressed edition is something many of us have been dreaming of, and for those looking to take their first trip to the Place, you are in for a life-affirming experience.Like all of the very best techno and electro, The Other People Place yields some of the most beautiful sounds to emerge from the D with a limited sound pallette, stripping everything back to the essentials to compose an incredibly important yet delicate album that still to this day continues to fascinate and seduce with its strikingly subtle flow and elegant mystery.

Forest Swords, aka acclaimed Merseyside-based producer Matthew Barnes, returns with his eagerly anticipated new full-length record.“Compassion" engages with an uncertain world we’re experiencing, distilling it into a unique sound territory: Barnes' exploration of the mid-point between ecstasy and frustration, artificial and human feels timely and affecting. The result is an assured, compelling body of work, tying together the ancient and future: weaving swathes of buzzing digital textures, field recordings, clattering beats and distorted jazz sax with fizzing orchestral arrangements. "Like many, with all that's been going on since I started making the record, I've struggled to see any kind of light at the end of the tunnel," says Barnes, "so I realised there's some sort of power in trying to create our own instead. I'm inspired by the ways we're communicating now, for better or worse, and thinking about new channels we can distribute ideas. The idea of looking for flexible future ways of expression and language, that bends to our needs quicker, really excites me”. Barnes launched the record with a unique experiment in new ways to disseminate music, personally sending album tracks through messaging app WhatsApp to anyone who asked. The album shifts from 'The Highest Flood's skeletal bounce to 'Panic's claustrophobic paranoia; the rapturous hyperballad 'Arms Out' to the windswept and cinematic ‘Knife Edge’, navigating through the orchestral glitch of 'War It' to decaying jazz thump of ‘Raw Language’. The album is equal parts disorienting and immersive, balancing bold sweeping gestures and crumbling textures; tracks seemingly disintegrating and reassembling at points across the album. Blending both digital and specially recorded brass, strings and vocals, Barnes's processing never truly makes it clear what's new or old, sampled or unique, constantly blurring and toying with the line between digital and acoustic. There will also be a variety of multidisciplinary projects set to run through his Dense Truth umbrella over the coming year: collaborations across dance, performance, film and music. Previous Forest Swords projects include devising and scoring contemporary dance piece ‘Shrine’, composing for the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ video game, collaborating with Massive Attack on their new music, and scoring the first movie made entirely with drones – 'In The Robot Skies’ – which debuted at the BFI London Film Festival.Central to this enthralling world is “Compassion", an album that's as weighty as it is vulnerable, sculpting the most striking parts of his previous work into something that feels urgent and necessary, and cementing Barnes as one of the UK's most significant electronic artists and composers.

Acid Pauli is a name synonymous with certain aesthetic towards electronic music culture - both a part of the unhooked generation of that grew up experiencing his revelatory sets at places like Bar 25 and Fusion, and yet deeply rooted in musicality and adventurousness. BLD, the second full album from Martin Gretschmann, (aka Acid Pauli), builds on his already impressive back catalogue which spans back to 2005, and includes a debut album released on Nicolas Jaar's Clown and Sunset. Over the course of the eight tracks here, Gretschmann explores some of the many facets that have made him one of the most trusted artists in his field. Released on his own (and Nico Stojan's) label Ouïe - the album is the perfect expression of the imprint's commitment to diverse, exciting sounds, freed of the conventions of traditional club music. The album covers a number of moods and emotions, from dystopian carnivalesque vibes to moments of high intensity, through to deep melancholia and synth laden ambience. Gretschmann's well documented love of the sampler shines throughout - tracks are textured and colored with different hues from his extensive sound palette, whether it's a part of his more psychedelic moments, or concentrated on his innate knowledge of dancefloor dynamics. As such BLD sits together as a complete piece of music - to be relished just as much by blissed out home listeners as the left-field dancers.

Spring might not yet have sprung, but the Growing Bin is always in bloom. After brightening our days with the opiate beauty of Barthel, Bohm and Bauer and the dusky grafts of Moon Blast year, Basso’s well tended imprint begins 2016 with an antipodean gem. The green fingered, or thumbed, among you might recognise A.R.T. Wilson from his time in the Growing Bin a while back, when he soothed ourcares with the drifting dreamscape of ‘Overworld’. Now the sometime club menace returns to Hamburg’s finestlabel in the company of numerical pioneer Eleventeen Eston AKA John Tanner for another journey into the heartof the horizontal. Setting up camp where the Swan River meets the Indian Ocean, Wilson and Tanner tuned intonature, translating the warm sun, sea air and blue sky into a postcard from paradise. Lithe clarinet dances aroundtranquil piano, relaxed guitar decorates velvet synth textures and unhurried percussion makes an occasional appearance,as if to remind us that time’s still passing. Employing an innovative alfresco recording technique, Andyand John invited members of the local animal community to join their jam sessions, saving a Blue SwimmerCrab from the flames of the barbecue and encouraging him to claw the ivories. Drop the needle and drift awayon the distant ocean of “Pilot”, freefall into the soothing ambience of ‘Further Than Your Headlights’, and let“Sun Room” guide you gently back to terra firma. The dream team of Australian musicians (not to mention a verytalented crustacean), come together on one vinyl – and it’s better than you could possibly imagine.

Feathered Sun is the collaborative experiment from Acid Pauli, NU, Jo.Ke, Raz Ohara, Chris Schwarzwalder and Iannis Ritter. They fuse a celebration of spirit with moody atmospheric melodies, trying to celebrate moments in time through their music. Friends for years, they hang out, with or without kids; and cook, eat, breathe, record and produce in different combinations and locations, with Berlin and Peru as their main bases. With a wide ranged sound that is at the same time familiar, they start to draw ever bigger circles, touring the world and accumulating hits, especially NU with the still topical "Who loves the Sun", sung with Jo.Ke's haunting voice.

Future music duo Second Woman's sophomore full-length for Spectrum Spools further hones their distinctive fusion of shapeshifting software sculpture and tessellated footwork. Shivering digital textures oscillate with and against algorithmically mapped percussion samples; smeared synthetic chords levitate in the distance; stabs of digital noise punctuate the mix in twitchy, time-distorting patterns. Their anamorphosis verges on ascetic: stark, splintered waveforms rendered into unique fiber optic hieroglyphs.Multi-instrumentalists Josh Eustis and Turk Dietrich share a deep history going back to their days in the New Orleans ambient electronic community, as part of Telefon Tel Aviv and Belong, respectively. Even so, S/W pushes beyond their combined discographies to date, flexing impossibilities, building rhythms from arrhythmia, teasing veiled emotion from bold iterations of cold code.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Die Tödliche Doris was born out of West Berlin’s lively post-punk community in the early ‘80s. Along with Einstürzende Neubauten, Malaria, Sprung Aus Den Wolken and Frieder Butzmann, Die Tödliche Doris ranks amongst the Geniale Dilletanten – which roughly translates as “ingenious dilettantes” – who sought to democratize cultural productions beyond the grip of both Western capitalism and GDR socialism. The Geniale Dilletanten became synonymous with a free-for-all approach to music, film, painting and performance where participants encouraged raw expression through provocation and experimentation. Wolfgang Müller and Nikolaus Utermöhlen founded Die Tödliche Doris in 1980, presenting the public persona of Doris as a constantly shifting entity that deliberately engaged the contradictions of the human condition. The band often referenced themselves in the third person singular, alluding to Doris as a fully-formed female character with explosive, colorful emotions. For her debut album – originally released on Zickzack in 1982 and playfully titled " " (that is, blank space surrounded by quotation marks) – Doris most closely entertains the notion of a typical rock band with drums, bass and guitar. Produced by Neubauten’s Blixa Bargeld, the thirteen songs presented here are disquieting lullabies of profound anxiety, savage and primitive deconstructions of German polka and manic lacerations of punk minimalism: all reflections of the many and fractured personalities of Doris. This first-time vinyl reissue includes a reproduction of the original 24-page booklet. Limited edition of 500 numbered copies on clear vinyl.

Into the Light brings out a splendid assemblage of 17 tracks of mostly previously unheard material by Athens based composer Akis Daoutis (Akis) most of them recorded in his hometown and in USA where he was studying in the mid-eighties.This time the release spans even wider both in period of time and style. 'Christmas' being the earliest recording (1986) and the closing track 'My Haunting Sins' the most recent (2016). Apart from including again two pieces from his elusive 'Into the Light' album - originally released in 91 - the 'Space, Time and Beyond' includes some really special features. That would be three tracks from his ultra rare 'Akis Love' cassette tape that was released privately and only in 100 limited copies. Moreover you can find two extracts from his long take called 'New Age Rising' that the original recording lasts almost 40 minutes in one take! This collection is making an effort to capture the works of Akis in a period of almost three decades. The variation of the compositions' style is even more impressive. From hypnotic ambience to more dark and unwordly exploration using Xenakis' UPIC musical tool and from his late 90s/early 00s contributions on soundtracks back to more new age lift music.

Gonjasufi follows up 2016's Callus with a multifaceted collection of remixes, cover versions and original music entitled Mandela Effect.Taking its title The Mandela Effect, "a recent phenomenon in which experiencers claim to be living in a reality slightly different from the one they remember" this seems like the most fitting way to describe this patchwork collection of rewired reworkings of Gonja's latest and greatest.Calling on friends from across the board, instant choice chops include Massive Attack's Daddy G with his radioactive retake of Your Maker, Shabazz Palaces' motorik dub of Afrikan Spaceship & Moor Mother's take on The Kill.Elsewhere though, gold is unearthed when the lesser known names taking centre stage. L.A. Club Resource's Innyster turns in a killer cosmic punk techno version of Maniac Depressant whilst his cold wave cover version of Portishead's Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man's Show is a scene stealer. An incredibly well mapped out variety of sounds and selectors that each gives a different angle while perfectly complimenting Gonjasufi's original ideas. A Strangely Isolated Place was responsible for releasing some of the most beguiling and magical music of 2016, including superb full-length excursions from 36 and Merrin Karras. Predictably, this full-length from regular collaborators Christopher 'Lav' Landin and Ludvig "Purl" Cimbrelius is rather good. It was inspired by a large number of field recordings Landin made while holidaying in Greece back in 2014, which Cimbrelius combined with his own pianos, beats and electronic textures. After some to-ing and fro-ing, they ended up with a set packed full of evocative ambient and electronica pieces that match melodies and chords to the gentle rhythms of nature.

Originally released on Studio !K7 Records in 1998, Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister's groundbreaking release, 'The K&D Sessions' reset the bar for what could be achieved in a compilation. Across an array of original tracks, dubs and infamous ‘K&D Session’ remixes, the DJ and producer duo took the listener on a smoke-filled blunted journey that flowed flawlessly. Often compared to DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing' for it's similarly deft craft of rhythm and quoted by Allmusic as "the most blissfully blunted music the world has ever heard", the album has sold over 1,000,000 copies to date and was included in Spin’s ‘Top 20 albums of 1999’. The album has long since been deleted on Vinyl with original 4LP sets changing hands for €300+ on the collectors market and even a bootleg vinyl copy will set a buyer back over €100. Sixteen years later, this legendary album will be available as a long overdue 5LP reissue remastered by Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. Finally back in print in 180g vinyl.

Now repressed!Arguably the label’s highest profile release thus far; the mighty Pye Corner Audio joining forces with PY label mate Faten Kanaan for an ace split 45.In PCA's Martin Jenkins' own words: “Faten Kanaan first came to my attention with her wonderful cassette release 'EP'. We started corresponding shortly after that and I always had it in mind that we should collaborate on something. So when PY asked if I would contribute to the label, and then released Faten's 'The Botanist & The Archaeologist' LP things seemed perfectly aligned”.A side “The Darkest Wave” features pulsing icy synth drones over which Faten’s cool NY narrative owes nods to some 70’s Carpenter-eque VHS chillwave soundtrack, (not unlike some of Umberto’s work of the last decade or so.) A beautifully evolving, slow burner piece which over continuous plays reveals one of the year’s great A sides so far. The B side is a stripped down piece more in keeping with the seminal minimal synth singles of the late 70s beloved by both artist and label here. Indeed, Martin Jenkins’ sleeve art also doffs it’s cap to the artwork feel of some of those legendary post punk 45s.A magical 45 released as a one time pressing of 500 45s on vinyl only with Polytechnic Youth discography card. Incidentally.

Many many stories and shared memories – not all of them good, not all of them bad either. While modern space age technology would make it possible to reach the moon’s surface a lot faster, for us it is not only about moving forward as quickly as possible, but also to turn around, look back and around ourselves and to reflect on everything that happened and is happening. This is why we have such a broad range of artists guesting on our latest compilation. Some that have been part of the voyage from its earliest stages, others that have been with us for major milestones along the way, and even more that might move ahead with us into new and unchartered musical regions.Working with Dave McKean – a true legend, especially for anyone into comic illustrations – wraps up this whole trip in the sweetest way. Not only is it a big honour, but – in a way – it completes the circle, as Dave has been a major influence for the label’s artworks from its earliest beginnings already.Luckily, we have not crashed into any lunar crater with our listeners. We want to thank you for making this long journey possible and we greatly look forward to celebrating this milestone with our partners, musical family and of course with you, our listeners.Since our 10th anniversary the face of one of our founding members who passed away way too early graces our logo. Finally here; Raime dissect and rebuild a Jungle session under their Yally alias for Diagonal, backed with a fiercely squashed 8-bar grime lash. Cold sweats and bassbin burial styles in both cases. Unmissable gear! Now seven years deep into the project - but with decades of combined bassbin immersion between them - the Yally project finds Joe and Tom Raime tending to their roots in the UK’s ’90s hardcore ‘nuum and likewise finding the common bridge between theirs and Diagonal’s fetish for the sickest ballistics of jungle and London bass music. The big, BIG highlight on this one is the A-side’s Dread Risk. Operating with all the lip-biting control and tenacity of a crack, back-alley surgeon, they replace reticulated breaks into a zombied new corpus convulsing with death gasp no wave yelps and bound up with tensile, fishing line strings and hooks to puppeteering, Frankensteinian effect right on the line between baws out bruk and stoic, eyes-shut meditation. Consider us badly snagged on this one.Flipside, U-Eff-O is practically the A-side’s inverse, diverting all the energy downwards into quaking subbass movements and mechanical 8-bar gear grinds, offset in the upper registers by nerve jangling hi-hats and ominous shortwave interceptions, kinda some alien episode dug out of Jon E Cash’s deep freeze, from behind the curly fries and a nine bar. Can’t sleep.

Originally recorded for Crea Sound Ltd, a sub-label of Louis Delacour's Neuilly imprint, MUSIQUE POUR LE FUTUR finds French composer, arranger, producer, possible time traveler, and all around music library legend Nino Nardini experimenting with synthesizers, percussions, prepared piano, echo, and special effects. Fans of electronic oddities, eerie cinematic audio-landscapes, Piero Umiliani or Bernard Parmegiani will rejoice at this full-length musical adventure that could very well be the soundtrack for a film in which characters from a 70s Italian horror movie visit a distant (forbidden) planet from a 50s sci-movie. It's bizarre, hypnotizing, slightly spooky, always out-of-this-world and goddamn BRILLIANT! Nino Nardini, also known as Georges Teperino, had a very fruitful career in library music, much like longtime collaborator Roger Roger.

Like master painters exploring a subject over a lifetime’s work, Kevin Martin and Dylan Carlson – The Bug and Earth, respectively – have each been mining and defining their genres for more than 20 years. They’re united by an interest in – really an obsession with – heaviness. They search for, examine and break the boundaries between beautiful and ugly, minimal and maximal, light and dark – but The Bug and Earth always make music that is heavy in the most thrilling of ways. The record’s beautiful, chiming melodies are like shards of sonic light, glowing in currents of heavy bass darkness. There are pulsing soundscapes, ambient pinks and whites, and irresistible grooves. This is music that grips you entirely, and catches you in its lava-flow – an astonishing, primal album of vast depth. In making it, Martin decided to break from The Bug’s obsessive study of groove, tone and texture, and think more cinematically. The result is a wondrously visual album, akin to finding oneself wandering amongst the rocky red hills of the Californian deserts. In fact, he says, the album could be understood as reflecting a ‘mistrust of “Hollywoodisms,” and the shadow of Hollywood fantasy that looms large over life in LA, and the USA in general. “Dylan’s a master at amplifying the flavour of America,” he says, “but not the side we see in this Trump climate.” For Martin, the “American dream is like a nightmare under Trump” but Dylan captures the “best side of that dream, a utopian openess.”“I hear the writing of Cormac McCarthy in his music. His playing conjures deserts, and wide open spaces.’ In “Concrete Desert,” Earth’s sonic landscapes, its far horizons and vast spaces, are underpinned and propelled by Martin’s ear-worming rhythms and percussive genius.

Fans of SHIGETO's previous work will find all the hallmarks of his sound here - the warm, inviting washes of liquid synth sounds, the intricate production, the jazz-influenced arrangements. Now, however, they're imbued with a subtle energy - "Detroit Part 1," for instance, features a surprisingly pounding hip hop beat, while "Ringleader" is propelled by an insistent hi-hat pattern that sits slightly ahead of the beat, giving the track a driving mood that belies its tempo.

Reissue of these incredible ‘lost’ recordings from the mysterious Orior, a huge influence on Demdike Stare. Tracks recorded between 1979 and 1983, compiled by DDS.Orior’s ‘Elevation’ 7” was released in 1979 and is one of the records that Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker of Demdike Stare shared an obsession over around the time they started working together 30 years later.Spurred on by rumours of an unreleased LP, Demdike were determined to track them down but had scant information to go on, just the names “Clip and Phil” credited on the 7”, and an out of date contact for the obscure label Crystal Groove. After some detective work, and with a little help from Frank @ VOD, they managed to get a postal address for Clip that was ten years old and sent a note over.Fortuitously, a letter was returned in reply from a Jeff Sharp (Clip) who was extremely surprised to be asked about recordings he had long forgotten about. This started a rewarding process: the master tapes were found in Jeff’s loft, but were in poor condition so were passed on to Andy Popplewell at AMR to bake and transfer. As Miles Whittaker explains:“The day I went to AMR to collect the masters, before I’d even listened to anything, the engineer Andy Popplewell told me there was ‘pure gold’ on those tapes. He said it was an absolute joy to listen as the tapes were being recorded, so our anticipation was through the roof...”The material is indeed special, in some respects typical of the era - lots of experimental drum machine experiments and so on, but also posessesd of a totally unexpected character: there are moments that recall the dense atmospheric pieces of Angelo Badalamenti, others that evoke classic Vangelis, or indeed the eerie soundscapes of Leyland Kirby. There are passages that bring to mind Bruce Gilbert’s Dome project, and parallels can be drawn with the Fourth World ambience of Jon Hassel and Brian Eno, as well as early Coil.In short - it’s a revelatory set of recordings that, were it not for some resourcefulness and an awful lot of good luck would have just rotted away in an attic somewhere in South East England. Lucky for us, we can now hear it in all its expansive glory, spread across two meticulously curated LP’s on this wonderful label.

You Know What It’s Like is an album for inbetween days, and occupies inbetween states: plain-speaking pop, disorientated by dub. Psychedelic folk delivered with (post-)punk economy. Drifting in space while still tethered to the ground. Astral tones blurred with earth sounds: wood, bone, breath, skin, dirt. Ending and beginning, dying and becoming. Longing for adventure and an unquiet life. Struggling to get out of bed. This is Carla dal Forno’s debut solo album, following time in cult Melbourne group Mole House and an earlier association with Blackest Ever Black as a member of F ingers and Tarcar. Her voice is an extraordinary instrument: both disarmingly conversational and glacially detached. It has something of the bedsit urbanity of Anna Domino, Marine Girls, Antena, or Helen Johnstone - stoned and deadpan - but it can also summon a gothic intensity that Nico or Kendra Smith would approve of. This voice is the perfect embodiment of dal Forno's emotionally ambiguous songs: their lyrics rooted in the everyday, observing and exposing a series of uncomfortable truths. This voice asks difficult questions of singer, subject, and sung-to.And of course there are no simple answers. Singles ‘Fast Moving Cars’ and ‘What You Gonna Do Now?’ weigh up claustrophobia against loneliness, inertia against acceleration, doubling down versus taking off; the title track acknowledges the provisional nature of love and “real” intimacy, then decides to brave it anyway. By the time we arrive at the startlingly sparse ‘The Same Reply’, the impermanence of all things is something that can no longer be tolerated, and the sense of dejection is absolute. The vocal-led pieces are interspersed with richly evocative instrumentals, like Eno’s Another Green World reimagined in shades of brown and blue. Smothered in tape-hiss and reverb, the seasick synthesizer miniatures ‘Italian Cinema’ and ‘Dragon Breath’ channel the twilit DIY whimsy of Flaming Tunes and Call Back The Giants. ‘DB Rip''s drum machine and bassline are pure Chicago house, but then its dark choral drones nod to Dalis Car's dreams of blood-spattered Cornwall stone. ‘Dry The Rain’ drinks from a stream of eldritch, home-brewed moon musick that runs through Coil, In Gowan Ring, Third Ear Band, even the Raincoats’ Odyshape, and into the woods.

Floating Points began as the solo project of Sam Shepherd before it became clear the immersive, intricate nature of his music demanded expansion. Following his critically acclaimed debut Elaenia this is exactly what happened and Floating Points live became a band of incredibly talented musicians with Sam at the helm. Now, Floating Points has announced a new short film and soundtrack, featuring entirely new and unheard compositions - Reflections - Mojave Desert via Pluto on 30 June. The film, in collaboration with director Anna Diaz Ortuño, finds the ensemble in a thrilling sonic exploration of environment under an endless desert sky.“Whilst we were out playing and exploring the area around us - the sound reflecting from the rocks, the sound of the wind between them, complete stillness at night and packs of roaming coyotes in the distance, it became apparent that we could use this as its own unique recording environment.” - Sam Shepherd, Floating PointsThe first in a planned series of environmental recordings by Floating Points to be filmed and recorded at different locations around the world; the recording was made last year, as Floating Points travelled to the Mojave to rehearse in between US touring. Immediately struck by the distinct sonic tapestry created by the rock formations and valleys, Sam and the band set up a recording operation and filmed this new work at the base of the natural sculptures they encountered. The music of Reflections - Mojave Desert mirrors the landscape: soaring and vast, dynamic and intimate, centred around two longer works and shorter pieces that create a singular and seamless experience.Reflections - Mojave Desert begins with chords played on a Rhodes Chroma and recorded with a surround sound microphone. Throughout the filming, microphones were placed throughout the landscape to capture the natural sonic textures of the desert: the undulating sound of wind, a bird call, the rustling of bushes and more created a backdrop on which much of the record rests. The music softly shifts from the Fender Rhodes introduction to ‘Silurian Blue’, an expansive full band piece that balances refined restraint with explosiveness. In one scene, ‘Kites’, Sam Shepherd walks through a valley with a super directional microphone, swinging it back and forth as a synthesiser loop gets faster to showcase the natural reverb and shifting phase of sound waves. ‘Kelso Dunes’ signals the film’s final act: the sky grows dark, lasers flash, the band and rocks gleaming in the pitch black around them. One of London’s most sought-after DJs, producers and live entities, Floating Points has toured with The xx - supporting their record breaking string of dates at Brixton Academy, collaborated with Caribou, Four Tet, and has performed across the globe including festivals like Glastonbury, Primavera, and Pitchfork Festival Europe. Floating Points’ debut LP Elaenia was deemed Resident Advisor’s ‘Album of the Year’ as well as Mojo’s ‘Electronic Album of the Year’ in 2015. This was followed by the Kuiper EP in 2016. Sam also hosts the internationally renowned You’re A Melody DJ parties and co-runs the Melodies International reissues label.

Previously the main guy behind earlier label faves ‘Detox Twins’, “Minor Activity” is already being highly lauded from online blogs and early reviews and just recently, Andrew Weatherall has already added 2 ace cuts to his DJ set. There truly is no filler amongst the album’s 10 cuts, which in Mark’s own words “reveal a 10 track slow dive into the sinuous distraction of love that is -however briefly or not- owned or desired by every breather to walk their years until dust. Simple movements in synthesis providing currency for this foray of dark electro pop”Whilst lyrically he admits to a fondness to -and a tip of the cap- in places, to Dylan Thomas, Henry Miller and William Wordsworth.Across the 10 tracks here, you’re instantly drawn to that classic early Mute and Some Bizarre sound; Fad Gadget, Vince Clarke, early Soft Cell perhaps, but continued plays reveal not only the darker edge that Mark alludes to above, but a thoroughly modern, of it’s time, set of gorgeously crafted melodies and a classy songwriting guile, not to mention being stacked top to bottom with potential dancefloor fillers… An absolute must for all minimal synth, electropop heads; it really is a wonderful record and will no doubt disappear dead quick as other PY releases show….
