The dense claustrophobic fog and monolithic synth notes of “Including time for thought” suggest something foreboding; that it is already too late. Too late for what though? With feet rooted and the tide approaching, “In Mud” ponders aloud, amidst the fat rock-disco beat, staccato synth jabs and swirling sequences on our fate and whether we only have ourselves to blame. “Whirled” compresses into 8 minutes an industrial heartbeat pulsing, whilst gasping for air atop the smothering prickly noise, almost overwhelming, but thankfully released by a timely power loop with one foot on the monitor and access to an oxygen mask.“Missed” reminisces on people & times past and the future missed, to a sympathetic stroke of calming pads, muted horn and arpeggio shower. “Poison Strings” breakbeat and electro roll order to dance, but trench deep bass and multi fuzzed up layers aim to provide a wall of defence against the harshness of modern times, for those just wanting to live their lives.“Fault” – It’s there in plain sight, embodied by a looped distorted howl and plaintive keys; our pain and frustration - obvious and true. “Ghostwalk” Dungeon bass and a bright warm arpeggio make peace, whilst synth clouds mesh and tangle before shapeshifting into other (worldly) dimensions.“Dark Island” – Cherished memories of those most loved, recent travels and travails, the fleetingness of those moments. A burbling bass, melancholy accordion and wistful organ lament their passing, our passing and what now awaits.

Only one copy per customer!Martinique is an island in the Lesser Antilles, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea found between the Greater Antilles (Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rica) to the north-west and the continent of South America to the south. Martinique is one of the eighteen regions of France (there are five overseas regions) and an integral part of the French Republic. As part of France, Martinique is also part of the European Union, and its currency is the Euro. The official language is French, and virtually the entire population speaks Antillean Creole. It was first claimed by France in 1635 under the reign of King Louis XIII.Located geographically closer to the United States than to Europe, the Antilles absorbed jazz and mixed it with the traditional rhythms of their islands: the Biguine, Gwo Ka, Tumbélé. Many artists over the years have explored this uniquely affecting mix: D’Alexandre Stellio, Jean-Claude Montredon, Al Lirvat, Acques Coursil and Mario Caning. But one of the best exemplars of this fusing of American jazz and the Antillean musical tradition was pianist and composer Marius Cultier. Marius Cultier was born in 1942 in Fort-de-France, Martinique. A precocious talent for an early age, at nine he conducted with the L'Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Fançaise, the French national public broadcasting organisation. As a young man, Cultier hosted a radio show, ‘Punch en Musique,’ which proved a hit with the public and his name and reputation slowly built. Tragedy struck him at 14 when he was orphaned and he was looked after by this elder sister. As tragic as 1956 proved for Cultier, it was to be a watershed year for another reason - it was the year he discovered jazz. It wasn’t long before he was fusing the musical styles and language of the West Indies with jazz and he began live performances at the Hôtel l’Impératrice.Very quickly Cultier became an in-demand concert attraction in Martinique and venue owners soon began to book him across the island. His reputation grew and before long he was also performing across the Caribbean. As his stature grew, he began to receive accolades and prizes, including the International Piano Conquest prize in Puerto Rico for his performance of "Round Midnight”.He went to Canada in 1966 - initially for a few weeks - where he stayed for several years. Whilst there he met and played with established jazz artists before continuing his journey in the United States, and then Europe, where he played in Paris at the Palais des Congrès at the invitation of the then President, Valérie Giscard D’Estaing, before returning to Martinique in 1973.This release is pressed on heavyweight vinyl. The cover is presented on original glued prints on thick cardboard in a PVC outer sleeve.

We are pressing a revised version of Bonobo’s One Offs Remixes & B-sides, the new version will not include the Amon Tobin remix. I have put all the new details below, please amend in your systems and notify shops/accounts of the change. You can continue to sell the old stock, but moving forward this will be the only version available, we should have the new stock in about 6/7 weeks. Dealer price is the same as the old one, let me know if you have any questions.Successfully beating the bootleggers at their own game, ‘One Offs’ offers Bonobo fans the chance to get their mitts on rare 12” and 7” cuts, as well as some truly exceptional remixes. In between Bonobo’s critically-acclaimed debut, Animal Magic, and his first album for Ninja Tune, Dial M for Monkey, Tru Thoughts decided to release this compilation of hard-to-find tracks from his early singles and remixes (especially after they found bootlegs of the music appearing). The songs on this album capture many different moods and scenes, evoking wide swathes of differing emotions and musical styles. All the while though, the album retains a recognisable musical signature of its own: this balance between broad-minded eclecticism and a well-defined style gives some indication as to why Bonobos music, as well as being critically lauded, has been licensed to over 50 compilation albums across the world, covering a variety of music scenes! There are countless gems on the album, which even steadfast admirers of Bonobo’s two other albums may have previously found nigh-on impossible to get their mitts on.

Two years after the successful “Synthetic Soundscapes of Modern Urban Morality” compilation, Geheimnis Records is happy to announce its follow-up, by releasing “Synthetic Soundscapes of Modern Urban Morality / Chapter 2”. The spirit remains the same. New bands, artists, projects that are for the most part, in the early stages of their dreams. Some of them have already released their music on vinyl, but for the majority, this is their first time seeing their music imprinted on an official music format, such as a 12’’ vinyl LP. Since Geheimnis Records is based in Greece, 5 of the bands/artists come from this country, while 4 bands come from Europe. In particular: “Misfortunes” come from Thessaloniki, Greece and is a one man-project. Ioakim Vasiliadis is the person behind the synths. He started back in 2014 and his affection for the 80’s analogue revival can be clearly heard through his compositions. This is his very first time on vinyl with two songs “??? ?? ?? ???? ????" (“I wonder if I should give up”) and “In The Streets Of Our City”. “Dislocation Genders” is a duo project which also comes from Thessaloniki, Greece. Nick K. Maldoror is familiar to analogue synth enthusiasts all over Europe, since he was the one half of the late great “Human Puppets”. He has been collaborating with George D. since 2012 and this is the first time a song of theirs is released to the public. “Doric” of course is already familiar (Stathis Leontiadis – the other band member of “Human Puppets”) having already released the majority of his work on vinyl. The last couple of years he has had a closer collaboration with the fashion-designer-icon-singer Valisia Odell (Phoenix Catscratch, Strawberry Pills, Father Breath) who has given a more operatic and “cursed” aspect to his analogue-synth based music. The song included here, is very typical and reflects their good chemistry. “Neon Lies” is the one-man project of Goran Lautar who hails from Zagreb, Croatia. He started his solo project in 2015 and released a tape-album in October 2016. Haunted, whining vocals blended with lo-fi minimal synth sounds. The 2 songs that are included in this compilation are his first releases on vinyl. “Whispering Sons” are from Brussels, Belgium and last year released one of the most promising albums of the post punk alternative genre, “Endless Party”. Their guitar-based music incorporates dark and atmospheric elements mixed with anguished and nervous vocals that give an exceptional tone of well-balanced post punk. The song included on this compilation, first appeared on their debut LP. “Tisiphone” come from Lyon, France. The 3-member band is also a guitar-based act, dark and gloomy with a steady bass line, heavy rhythm section and a distinctive guitar. Last year they released their self-titled debut cd and their contribution here is from that album. “Mitra Mitra” is the brain-child of Mahk Rumbae and Violet Candide. They are based in Vienna, Austria and have been together since 2014. Mahk is a member of the “Oppenheimer MKII” project and “Konstruktivists”, as well as the “Codex Empire” solo techno project. Violet Candide originally hails from New Zealand. The version of their minimal/electro song “Opportunity” is available only on this compilation. “RATS” is a duo project, from Thessaloniki, Greece. Elias Papadopoulos has been collaborating with Iro since 2015 and they are heavily influenced by witchhouse, dark wave and industrial sounds. Last year they released a cd-album which received many good reviews from various webzines and music portals. Last but not least, “Paralogik” are the brain-child of Eugene B. (already familiar with his project included in our “No Radar” compilation, “Etherial Movement”) already conceived in 2014. With the help of Nick L. they have created a music hybrid, heavily influenced by dark-electro with more harsh and aggressive elements. Their work is released here for the first time. The compilation will be released in July 25th, 2017, in 300 hand-numbered copies, half of them on black and half on transparent purple, including an insert with lyrics, photos and details. Vinyl mastering by Chris “Snake” Manolitsis.

The record features an incredible cast of guests - Gonjasufi, Jonwayne, Natureboy Flako, Ta’Raach, Jeremiah Jae, Zeroh, Zackey Force Funk, N8NOFACE, Sach, Akello G Light and DJ Chris P Cuts - spanning experimental meditative, Zennist loops; crackly oddball beats and abstract raps; as far as outright punk/noise and even folk/blues. At its heart it’s an incredibly sentimental record, heavily referential to his past but also future-facing, and not just in its sonics.

First Word Records are very proud to present a heavyweight EP in collaboration with seminal groove collective, CoOp: 'Selectors Assemble'. It's been almost two decades since a bunch of music makers, bored of the genre constraints of their time, began toying with time signature and syncopation to birth what is now known as broken beat. Summer 2017, the 'Selectors Assemble' EP is in our laps and we have a fitting reminder and long-overdue renaissance of one of London's most valuable musical movements.IG Culture and Alex Phountzi were integral to this movement, the focal point being the CoOp club night, which ran predominantly on the famed floors of Plastic People, up until 2007. CoOp remerged late in 2015 as a Boiler Room session, in which the originators linked effortlessly with new school players such as K15 and Alex Nut. The following day, a session was inspired between an assortment of artists, and the seeds were planted for the 'Selectors Assemble'.Here we have the first offering. The steady-paced roller of 'Gangz' (IG & Seiji), the dutty wine-ready getdown of Henry Wu's 'Substance', the heads-down low-end theory of '2nd Intention', the dominant soundclash call-out of the 'Spartan Riddim', riding out with the garage-flecked jam 'Can't Hold It', also featuring Sonar's Ghost (Domu). Five tracks deeply rooted in groove and as beautifully diverse as Bruk ever was.Pressed up lovingly onto 140g vinyl, this release is accompanied with a fully-printed insert, featuring an extensive piece on the history of Bruk, written by Andwot (Touching Bass), classic photography by Sarah Ginn, and full-colour artwork by Mitchy Bwoy, a legendary artist to the original scene in his own right. This is an essential artefact for followers of the sound, new and old.First Word prides itself on its ethos of musical diversity, and we're ecstatic to welcome aboard the CoOp foundation to the stable. A crew of British dance music pioneers, sound-system legends, and now-school heavyweights, this is but a taste of what's to come. Lead by the don IG Culture, the family spirit has quickly formed, the selectors have assembled. The stage has been set for bruk's second wind. Be ready.

Assel
This Will Not Stand
12" | 2017 | EU | Original (Where To Now?)
11,99 €*
Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Imagine a collab between Cabaret Voltaire and Eric Copeland mixed by The Scientist and you’ll start to enter the sphere of Robin Asselman. All spectrums explored. The off kilter dub waltz of ’16-16’ stutters into view with a heavy and heady rolling dread, whilst inaudible vocal snippets and flatlining synth lines echo and enforce a melee of repetition and danger. ‘Fitness Talk’ perhaps best showcases Assel’s interest in Dubwise production techniques, and his ability to soak up a palette of sound and turn it into something truly his own. Soft familiar bass pads provide the backbone here for all out sample mayhem, a space where recognisable dub effects and sonars vibe alongside absolutely unsettling outer samples of jarring vocals and inaudible upset, purposefully mixed to jolt ears into unfamiliar territories.Being the Nephew of DJ Marcelle, this experimental approach and inspiring concept of pushing samples to the absolute limits of their origin to create a new unexplored path is clearly something that has been fed down from Marcelle to Robin throughout his youth. Assel strives to convey the same elements of anticipation, surprise, and suspense in the listener as he himself experiences during the production process, and it is this successful translation where the power of Assel’s music lies. As also is the case with other contemporary acts that push the boundaries of electronic music such as N.M.O & N1L, there is this almost tangible and terrifying physicality to Assel’s sound, yet it retains an undeniably subtle workout groove. Perhaps this groove is enabled by the obvious dub and techno influence throughout the EP, both through Assel’s utilisation and realisation of the importance of the space in-between and his striking use of samples which seemingly dart out of nowhere, intentionally beaming from the mix to transform ears to that next zone ‘Barbecue Stains’ and ‘Pantoffels’ up the pace with layer upon layer of technoid strictness. Grooves come and go throughout, never settling in one spot for too long, but rather opting to explore the dramatic effects of each differing loop cycle and heavily treated vocal sample, again reinforcing this impression of Assel as a producer who never takes the easy path, or follows any kind of musical rule, but rather always looks forward for new angles to approach composition. “Music always should be surprising and make you alert. You must be on your toes and you should feel that anything could happen, the weirder the better. I love darkness and grit in music, it’s great when it doesn’t quite fit - that’s far more interesting to me then any kind of smoothness.” – Robin Asselman / Assel ‘This will not stand’ opens and closes in similar fashions through ‘Don Leo 2’ and ‘Don Leo 1’, with Assel crystallising the themes of grit, surrealism, absurdism, dub, and experimentalism explored over the EPs 22 minutes into two short sharp bursts.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Currently undertaking a residency at the prestigious EMS Stockholm, Egyptian producer Ahmed El Ghazoly makes a stunning 2nd mark on Lee Gamble’s UIQ label with Numbers, a ruggedly chopped but spatially hypersensitive suite of encrypted electronic rhythms and entrancing, mirage-like geometries.Boldly committed to his own niche between the folds of grime, techno and electro-acoustic dimensions, Zuli’s follow-up to the Bionic Ahmed EP pushes it’s loping designs into stranger, spaces within the sound field, finding an idiosyncratic ecology of frequency that finds room for dense, physical subbass, smeared vocals and iridescent motifs amid its morphing dimensions. The six tracks exemplify Zuli’s playfully paradoxical approach to club music, experimenting with tessellating dry and fluid textures in the dusty, humid London-via-Cairo swerve of Bow which cranks opens the EP, to the metastable techno momentum in the buckling rolige of CommProto, while She’s Hearing Voices feels like a smoking area between rooms, heard in a queasy but spangled state. That all feels like preparation for the second wind of the B-side, which convulses into action with the chromatic trance warp of What You Do and its grubbing Autechrian inversion, Tongue Chomper, only to slide off the page in Foam Home’s future primordial glob of melted dancehall. The hooks may be less explicit or tangible here than on his debut EP, but Numbers is proof, if it were needed, of a restless mind which is only just coming into its own.

This is the second in a reissue series of Dominick Fernow’s early work as Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, casting spells from the ‘Green Amulet Crafts Supernatural Qualities’ [2011] tape onto vinyl for the first time and steadily closing the gap in your RSE collection. Something like the soundtrack to one of Ballard’s prophetic visions of sunken cities, this second RSE incursion was initially released in an edition of 63 tapes in 2011 and found Fernow dwelling in a dread-fuelled, paranoid headspace. In aesthetic, it forms an oblique inversion of Prurient’s saturated noise assaults or a sort of chopped and screwed adjunct to Vatican Shadow, perhaps best located closest to his Force Publique Congo output, but with fathoms more negative space and those full sunken subbass charges.A Slave Boy That Died An Awful Death For Not Keepng His Owner’s Horses. He Helps People Who Are Looking For Lost Things fills the A-side, pinpointing a location that could easily be an overgrown traffic island as some Nigerian mangroves in oil country, overrun by local scallies or machete wielding pirates, both scared witless, who could well be the B-side’s An Old Hag That Wears Shoes And Stomps Over People’s Stomachs At Night Making Them Breathless, as is common to local legends of Manchester’s southern edgelands and the Niger Delta. Thanks to Paul Corley’s sensitive remaster and CGB’s lacquer cut, the subbass has been perfectly translated to the vinyl for total immersion, sounding stronger, wider than the tape or digital versions ever did, and in the process rendering RSE’s magick at its most tangible.Ask many Fernow/Prurient/Vatican Shadow fiends and they’ll likely cosign - this is some of the dankest, most precious work in Fernow’s sprawling catalogue..

The results arguably stand as one of the 21st century’s greatest musical enigmas and could be said to presage contemporary obsessions with processed vocals in a deeply uncanny manner, enduring to resonate with up-to-the-moment music as much as the record’s distant roots in the seminal works of 12th century German mystic and composer Hildegard von Bingen, and the writings of John Milton, among others.Spellwauerynsherde has always been crying out for a vinyl issue and Rabelais has done the piece proud with this sensitive new version allowing its seven parts to gently flow in sequence over both sides, with the added shroud of vinyl infidelity lending a beautifully subtle patina of detachment which perhaps only serves to heighten the paradoxical - both temporal, spatial and timbral - nature of the record’s ethereal vestibules and elusive, illusory sonic spectres. In remodelling these ancient works of art, Rabelais performs a sort of hypermodern animism on ostensibly dead musical material - dead as in hardly anyone knows or plays them in the modern age - imbuing them with a contemporary relevance through the process of his bespoke software (which is freely available to download) which serves to faithfully render, open-up new dimensions and plasmic aspects from work which is now nearly a millennia old - so old you can’t even call it classical music! For us at the least, Spellwauerynsherde has pretty much set a benchmark for experiments with ancient composition and computer music - each immersion in this vinyl is akin to floating thru the mists of time and sends shivers down our spine just even thinking or writing about it, never mind listening. We practically guarantee that Spellwauerynsherde is one of the most magickal, perplexing and strangely life-giving records that you’ll ever hear.

In NoCorner’s words ‘ASDA gave us 59 seconds of sugar-rushed holy praise, we gave them two remixes: one from Japan Blues, one from Ossia.’This is perhaps one of their boldest releases yet, giving us much needed new ASDA material, very short and very sweet, and coupling it with two reworked extensions that take the material into new realms of sound and structure.‘The McDonald’s Prayer’ could be chester giles & Vessel’s answer to the rawest of early grime, not necessarily in it’s intentions, but in it’s raw, 100% direct, energised accumulation. It’s a heartfelt, blasphemous symphony for concrete living conditions, and it’s left alone on one whole side of the vinyl, with a whole stretch of surface noise serving as the perfect breathing space whilst the needle finds the last groove on the disc.On the B Side, Japan Blues – himself a long time Honest Jon’s hustler and renowned selector – manages to ‘regrind’ the track into 6 mins of pressurized rhythm, reminding of early Horsepower Productions infused with his trademark far east ‘scapes and singular atmospherics, it’s a killer.Ossia drives chester’s vocals and Vessel’s sonics through a strange slush, sounding like the late night blues incurred after a day trawling the streets with a belly full of coca cola, fries and burger meat. The artwork for ASDA’s ‘the abyss’ LP on NoCorner last year is a very striking piece of work from the Tape-Echo studio, perhaps one of our favourites from him, and this follow up record had to reach certain levels of presentation that could keep up that feeling –and it sure did.

LP | 2017 | EU | Original (The Death of Rave)

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
The long-awaited debut release by yung new producer Croww for The Death of Rave, somewhere between a mixtape, imagined soundtrack and demonstrative showreel pieced together from a Slipknot sample pack used by the band’s Craig Jones on their landmark debut album and highly recommended if you're into Autechre, Rabit or Total Freedom. The severely gurned and kerned result is the Prosthetics (MechaMix) unique to the vinyl edition, and four constituent Prosthetics, featuring the original samples painstakingly dissected and assembled in uchronic form to suppose an alternate history of the last 20 years of pop and subcultural phenomena, one where rap metal is dissolved and alloyed with the extremities of grindcore, flashcore, late ‘90s D&B and hypermodern rap instrumentals. Safe to say it sounds like naught out there right now.Gestated from the seeds of a conversation after 2015’s Moss Side carnival, Prosthetics has grown into a sort of hybrid golem via intensely scrupulous sessions spent panning the original sample pack for flecks of precious, vantablack metals. In the process it became as much a study in coming to terms with formative influences as an exercise in sui-generis sculpturing, effectively forming a noumenal sidestep around the sub-cultural phenomena of Slipknot’s (like it or not) landmark debut record - an album which, at the time, sent shockwaves thru teenaged suburban bedrooms and the kind of clubs you could then get into with a fake ID.With the benefit of hindsight, Croww has acknowledged and figuratively taken those early influences on a vector that few would have imagined back then. From the record’s early warning of “...they’re doing something rather curious with the parts of the body, in a way we don’t fully understand…” the piece buckles and convulses in a reticulated series of wretches and spasmodic yet disciplined blast beats as much associated with Columbian paso doble as the pitching meter of La Peste’s seminal flashcore tracks or grindcore proper. Samples from Iowan public access TV are mutilated in the strangely brittle yet mercurial mix, whose Black Metal-debted pallor is unpredictably lit up with flashes of shellshocking psychoacoustic treatments in a complex, sci-fi style dramaturgy punctuated by abyssal lacunæ and intensely detailed cues. To be honest, The Death of Rave was never into Slipknot at the time, yet it was hard to ignore their ubiquitous presence if you were at all inclined to look beyond prescribed chart chaff. But, as the business end of late ‘90s house and trance has become a de facto club soundtrack in 2017, Slipknot’s awkward outsider legacy deserves some polish and attention.Croww has turned Slipknot’s cultural cadaver into a polysemous mutant that works as a brutalist DJ tool, or indeed as an introductory mixtape/imagined soundtrack boldly expressing the artist’s individuality, which feels deadly important in an age swamped by mimetic clones blindly chasing empirical populism on one hand, or all too happy to wallow in staid ideas of nostalgia on the other. It's a beguiling reminder that there’s always a third hand, a third track or third path.

Based in Rouen, France, and started in 2000, Morphoex is the project of Isthmael Baudry- a musician and photographer (his sleeve artwork adorns the jacket here, adapted by PY chum Nick Taylor) who presents the mighty “Soviet System” for Polytechnic Youth this August.Beautiful synth soundscapes that fluctuate between -on one hand- the icy synthpop edge of early Mute, yet build into ominously darker, beat driven, industrial rhythms that recall Throbbing Gristle and early Cabs; though with a succinct French flavour that tips it’s hat towards some of the work of Heldon / Richard Pinhas via the revered sounds emanating from the Berlin School.Describing his music, Isthmael says ‘Soviet System’ “incorporates compositions that arose from the combination of analogue, organic and composite sounds, without any intervention of computer, sampler or sequencer in it’s creation. It’s goal: bruitist and melodious, atmospheric yet dancey, ice-cold yet mesmerizing. It is a concept album; each individual is prisoner by a system: a bureaucracy, the family, the technology….We are not free….The freedom has a cost…But the dream is non paid…”The album is released on vinyl by Polytechnic Youth, this August in a pressing of 300, (sure to go quick) and digitally via the Morphoex bandcamp page.

Under the moniker Event Cloak and as part of the duo Sundrips, Montreal's Nick Maturo has been a heavy purveyor of avant-garde synthesizer music since 2010. Life Strategies is his first LP release and a major step for the artist, with an emphasis on sparse arrangements of digital electronics and chopped vocal samples. Each track unfolds with total clarity, utilizing the minimum amount of elements necessary to highlight their melodic, harmonic, and textural themes. The result is an overwhelming lightness, like a calm exhilaration, or the aural equivalent of a hidden sun-drenched room of bright whites and soothing grey tones.

However, the real adventure of Keope only started 10 years later when Marcus travelled to Trieste / Italy in July 2015 with the aim to record an album with Toni in an abandoned quarry on the Slovenian border. The outcome Tropicalni seems to exist in a vacuum.

In a city famed for its disparate and varied musical excellence, the Detroit-based alignment of feted electronic artist and producer Shigeto aka Zach Saginaw and rapidly rising Bruiser Brigade member ZelooperZ is an entirely natural thing. Introduced by mutual friends in the city, an instant bond was formed, and ZGTO was born. A Piece Of The Geto is out August 4th on Ghostly International, with a limited edition vinyl pressing by Third Man Records. For Shigeto, this is the first time he's musically stepped out of the box of a solo artist and worked with a vocalist on a project. There is a ''less is more'' philosophy with the production where the vocals of ZelooperZ are seamlessly interlaced into the fabric of the beats. It's minimal in a sense, but the emotion felt through the words of ZelooperZ makes the songs as a whole intense and heavy with sentiment.

From slowbeat EBM to Belgium klang to classic Den Hague crushers this ep forges its own path taking these cues and putting Smith's unqiue spin on them. Producer Darren Cunningham aka Actress, joined by the London Contemporary Orchestra, premiere new material as well as expanded arrangements of their dark and brooding electronica. Showcased last year at The Barbican Centre London and Strelka Institute Moscow and in conjunction with Boiler Room this 12” release named simply ‘Audio Track 5’ serves as an introduction to a larger body which will be released on Ninja Tune and Boiler Room TV as both a Long Player and performance piece in Autumn 2017.Over a decade of releases Cunningham has built a reputation as a fine creator of cerebral abstract techno, or R&B concrète, crafting pulsing kickdrums, jittering percussion and chopped sample loops into churning, rumbling tracks soaked in static. But he has also been on record saying he wants to make ‘classical stuff for a modern generation’.In this new collaboration, commissioned and curated by Boiler Room and the London Contemporary Orchestra with support from Arts Council England, the London Contemporary Orchestra bring a new dimension to Cunningham’s choice of sounds. With the producer in effect using them as a new instrument, matching his electronic loops with precise manipulation of their acoustic instruments, together they form a heightened kind of chamber music.

For his latest project, drummer Julian Sartorius hiked for ten days through Switzerland. In his luggage: two drumsticks and a curiosity about the sounds they might produce along the way. Out of the beats collected en route he made the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève», an experimental sound collage that maps Switzerland far from the usual stereotypes. In the distribution of the record Sartorius is also charting new territory: It will not only be sold as a vinyl record but also as a hiking map with a download code. For his last major solo project – «Beat Diary» (2012 / Everest Records) – Julian Sartorius left the studio; each day for one year he played a track in his immediate surroundings. For the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève» Sartorius progresses a thousand steps further: In October 2016 he donned his backpack and hiked for ten days from Basel to Geneva via the Jura Ridgeway Trail (270 kilometres). For sound sources he used what he found en route: tree trunks, hiker turnstiles, empty silos, dry corn stalks – each object evoking its own voice. As an explorer of the quotidian, Sartorius evoked with his drumsticks a universe of sound that’s hidden to the regular hiker. With a backpack full of recorded rhythmic patterns and sound sources Julian Sartorius returned to the studio to create the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève». Sartorius edited the different audio files, layering and combining them together. The result is an experimental sound collage in which every track represents one day of hiking and where the familiar meets the previously unheard. The album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève» will be released in June 2017 by Bernese label Everest Records. It will be available in two formats – as a hiking map with a download code and as a regular 12” vinyl. The map, designed by Silvio Brügger, charts and retraces the paths that Sartorius walked, inviting people to follow in the footsteps of the artist. In addition, one track of the album will be released as an artwork postcard that can be played as a vinyl on a record deck. The album release tour will see Sartorius guide an audience along a short hike circuit during which Sartorius will improvise with objects he finds along the way. The audience participants will follow while listening using headphones that receive audio from a microphone Sartorius trains on the objects. These hikes will start and end at selected music venues.

Pianist Oli Kuster (Menschmaschine / Oli Kuster Kombo / Astronauten / Züri West) and musician and sound artist Robert Aeberhard (dadaad. an open tuning / Fitzgerald & Rimini / Trummer) met for a special kind of cooperation: «Okra» is a duo for piano and sounds. The grand piano as a sophisticated and well-established instrument meets raw soundscapes, made of field-recordings collected from all kinds of places in the world.Sounds and noises are distinguished from tones by their origin of irregular oscillations of arbitrary frequencies and amplitudes, whereas tones show periodic oscillations. The combination of sounds, noises and tones when played by «Okra» results in organic and interwoven creations, reduced and fragile moments. An enchanting, yet disturbing kind of “Traummusik” emerges, a film of acoustic pictures, inevitably taking the listener on a journey. The spaciousness of their music led the duo to play their concerts in surround sound, by placing loudspeakers also in the back of the audience. With this setup, the spatial richness of their music can be perceived as a physical experience. Consequentially, the album «Okra» is mixed in surround sound.

Austin-based musician Eliot Lipp delivers “Skywave”; an album Lipp has been working on for the past several months. With influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. In these nine songs Lipp feels he “might have everything I want to say in one moment.” Recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing "Skywave" and giving himself permission to take some risks as well. With a versatile approach, Lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across America and abroad always returning to his hometown in the Pacific Northwest.Collaboration plays a role in all his albums. He’s been a fan of Emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his “Not Quite Awake” remix. He asked DMC champ Chris Karns to scratch on ‘Joyride’. In addition to doing cuts, Chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples. ‘Reflection’ came from a jam session with Gibbz and Cherub in their Nashville studio. One of Lipp’s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from Seattle that call themselves Fish Tank Friends. Most of them had a hand in the early stages of ‘Spiders’.With monthly trips planned from Texas back to Washington, he anticipates more evenings surrounded by friends, fans, and new listeners where he brings everyone together through the touch of a button.

Selwa Abd (originally from Morocco, currently residing in Brooklyn) uses the fictional character Bergsonist, from Brooklyn, Slovakia, as her musical guise. Derived from Deleuze's Bergsonism, Bergsonist uses intuition as a method to deliver her/his instinctive psychoanalytic theories. A blend of different audio sources and samples are used as a way to capture the essence of the 'present' moment, manipulating found sounds along with self-concocted digital fragments to combine in in the span of a set, given time. Bergsonist allows inspiration to come from anywhere, yet she/he limits themselves by the gear/tools that are used. The approach consists of inhaling all the energy of the city - influenced by trips to museums, galleries, shows, talking to people. and sensing nature - and exhaling it sonically. Bergsonist reacts to this energy and inspiration without any specific rules, styles, or genres - extending the array of possibilities by always pushing preconceived uses of the tools. Following a slew of cassette-only releases from labels across the global map and a split 12" with Isabella on Borft Records last year, Selwa shares her most twisted and considered compositions to date with Mutation. Four fire-stoking tracks of electro convulsions sparked from indecipherable depths inflame new terrains for an artist whose output is inextinguishable - prolific barely covers the rapidity with which Bergsonist shares new jams to a lucky few - proffering Mutation as an indelible moment in Selwa's blossoming career. Mutation features a ripped / thrashed remix from in-the-cut edit wizard, Murray CY. Mutation will be available in a limited vinyl edition of 200 with artwork designed and conceived by Selwa and Benoit Canaud Studio.

Naoki E-Jima's Disc Shop Zero record store in Tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. Since before Idle Hands was even established, when Rooted Records was king, the cosy, liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for Bristol's rich culture of soundsystem music. Over the years, Naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city, from Smith & Mighty through to Pinch and Pev and on to the output from our own humble label. It's been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world, in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love.As a thank you for all the support Naoki has shown Bristol music over the years, Idle Hands has put together a special tribute 10" of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes, shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. It's also a chance to fill in the missing IDLE013 catalogue number – fortunately, the number 13 does not represent bad luck in Japanese culture. On the A-side, the mighty (pun intended) Rob Smith takes to a track from Outboxx's debut album, originally intended for a remix 12" that never came to be. In his learned hands, "Lost Soul" becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass, with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. Rob's status as a true legend of Bristol music needs no explanation, but his presence here is furthermore because Naoki is such a fan of his music.

Zomby, one of the UK’s most enigmatic electronic producers, underscores his already illustrious succession of releases with his forthcoming EP “GASP!" on Big Dada.Zomby’s ability to effortlessly shift aesthetics across his career has firmly stationed him as a producer that can’t be boxed, and “GASP!" sees him altering his often jungle-driven sound yet again, furthering him as a sonic chameleon among an ever-increasing landscape of musical similitude. In his signature spirit of cryptic variety, “GASP!" explores another tectonic revision in ZOMBY’s style. Utilizing analog equipment that was recorded live to a digital surface, he says, “I was tired of too much digitisation and over-saturation; this is a work that represents a shift forward for me.” A shift forward indeed, the compact, 3-track EP is a relentless, hardware-driven behemoth of beats and breaks that fit somewhere between a chugging steel factory and a darkened dancefloor.

Kai Fagaschinski, clarinet. Michael Thieke, clarinet. Christian Weber, double-bass. Eric Schaefer, drums & percussion. In case it doesn't ring a bell, The International Nothing is the psycho-acoustic clarinet duo of Mr. Thieke and Mr. Fagaschinski. Since 2000 the two clarinetists have been collectively composing multilayered sound sculptures using multiphonics, beat frequencies and difference tones as an integral part of their unique language. They have released three duo albums on the Japanese Ftarri Label. There have been collaborative extensions in the past check out their avant pop band The Magic I.D. with Margareth Kammerer and Christof Kurzmann and when they first met with drummer Eric Schaefer and bass player Christian Weber in 2006 it was obvious this was also asking to become a band on its own terms: The International Nothing (... and something). Mr. Weber and Mr. Schaefer lent not only their individual instrumental skills to the fold - it was a true collective effort which brought these seven quartet compositions into being. And though you might regularly find each of the four musicians happily involved in context of improvised music, like anything previously produced by The Nothin' the music heard here is precisely determined, created through an extensive process of rubbing sounds and ideas against each other, long before entering the stage or pressing the record button. The aesthetic foundation of the clarinet duo is undeniable throughout the album, but Weber and Schaefer extend the sonic spectrum strikingly. The low end explorations of the bass and drums add a mysterious darkness. A moment of pulse is no longer provided solely as a secret message within the clarinet twin's microtonal beatings. Rhythmical figures sneak in gently, and at times you may even be boldly struck by a shameless groove.Name a band which sounds similar and you'll win ... something.

Coproduced with CSW Zamek Ujazdowski / The Centre for The Contemporary Art Zamek Ujazdowski.Alienated voices. Crackling noises. Abstract sounds of unidentifiable origins ... these are just some of the sources that Zorka Wollny, visual artist / composer from Krakow (whose work a.o. has been presented at CTM Berlin or ICI London), and her Austrian partner Christine Schörkhuber - freelance sound artist, video maker and musician with residencies in St. Petersburg, Copenhagen, Valparaíso, Buenos Aires a.o. apply to create seven acoustic miniatures that are based on and inspired by paintings by Senegalese artist El Hadj Sy. Tracks like "Blue Man" or "Alchemy" can be perceived as a reference to the experiments of pioneers at the GRM like Pierre Schaeffer or Guy Reibel on the one hand and the sound collages of underground icons Nurse With Wound or Ghédalia Tazartès on the other. Enriched with a wide variety of sounds and reduced at the same time, the short pieces are far from dry academic exercises and display not only profound knowledge and artistry in contemporary sound art but also create dense atmospheres that permeate the captivating, at times unsettling music. An excellent work by 2 strong voices of the current art scene!

In Singapore, the year 2015 will for evermore be remembered as "SG50" the state-led yearlong celebrations of Singapore's 50th year of independence, marked by scores of heritage projects, commemorative merchandise (SG50 fish cakes, anyone?), festivals and more. 2015 was also a big year for Marco Fusinato. The sound and visual artist was selected to exhibit at the prestigious Venice Biennale's headline international art exhibition, All the World's Futures. Right smack in the middle of his Venice stint, Fusinato's path intersected with that of Singapore's, as the Australian artist installed his first major solo exhibition, Constellations, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (ICAS). This also brought Fusinato's by-now legendary Spectral Arrows series of performances to the city-state, which saw the artist in an improvised durational performance using guitar and electronics. This LP-length documentation captures the immense energy and emotions of the 8-hour performance, marked by passages of eviscerating noise, abrupt shifts of tact, and tension-filled silence. Recorded live at the ICAS in the same month of Singapore's national day and the culmination of SG50 festivities, Fusinato's performance mirrored, and yet shattered, the relentless noise of the city-state's yearlong golden jubilee celebrations. Locked grooves on both sides of this vinyl release mean that the audio can repeat ad infinitum.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
The works on Anthropological Constants straddle a fence between field recording and experimental composition. The intention of each piece is to lead the listener astray in their environment by firstly identifying cues or references, and then slowly transforming them without replacing them with other [more] cues. As one reviewer wrote, the presence of 'constantly changing soundscapes... of unfathomable origin, which act like some kind of travelogue of... your own memories', defines the intent behind these works. The original tracks that make up this LP were the first computer-based compositions (originally made between 1996 and 2001), derived from methods employed in live group performances during the late 1980s, which used the same techniques for transporting the audience from the known to the unknown; from the public to the private or the external to the internal, by capturing and feeding back the listening space via chains of controlled processing. This isn't an attempt to separate the individual from the group listening experience but to try and demonstrate a method by which the individual listener is co-opted into a group experience of a space, via the removal of any specific meanings or cues and replacing them with potentials derived from the deconstruction of memory. First the environment must be un-learned; un-mediated; detourned. To some extent, these experiments are also psychedelic, in the sense that they aim at revealing something personal to each listener, which is also ever-present in the wider human experience of the surroundings. In that respect the work aims at that silence called 'black noise'; a purely human silence beyond that normally envisaged. A silence in which you can almost hear your own brain-ear mechanism scanning for references with which to define the dimensions of the space you are occupying. This vinyl edition was cut at SST and pressed at Optimal in a numbered edition of 500 and comes with an insert and download code.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
"Octogon" is the second album of dQtç and refers to both octogon and figure eight as directions to the artwork and musical compositions on this release. The music was originally improvised by the trio, then edited, sometimes cut and reshaped, into 9 tracks and 72 minutes of music, the eight first tracks being 64 minutes of music containing free improvisations and post-produced asymetric pattern loops. This puzzle has inspired the artwork that refers to the octogon as geometric form as well as a Euopean post-W.W.II political scandal known as "the Octogon Trust". More than an hommage to conspiracy-theories and over-interpretative type of relationships to reality that lead to constantly rewrite, OCTOGON explores ways to deal with free improvisation in a recording process, the passage of music from anyhow to somehow, the result as a musical document and strategies to pursue the creative process further, like an investigation following leads provided by the music, drawing analogies and strong connection with other domains, to make sense and poetry from chaotic randomness.

Sofa has been following Vilde&Inga since they started playing together back in 2010 and when they contacted us with the music from Silfr, there was no doubt in our minds. On Silfr they continue to develop the remarkable interplay from their first album, Makrofauna (ECM), but this time they turn the level up a couple of notches. On Silfr Vilde&Inga presents chamber music of international caliber. Each piece on the album dives into a microclimate which eventually reveals small musical pearls. The sound of the two is even more rich than ever and its impressive how the interplay is a perfect tool to enhance their characteristic, organic aesthetics. Sofa is very proud to invite Vilde&Inga to join the catalog with this wonderful album.

Jim Denley has been playing flute since 1969 - after 50 years of a curious love/hate relationship with the instrument this is his first solo flute-only recording. He aims to situate this music within a global outlook, with a pacific perspective. Being from a continent, Australia, where there is no flute tradition, he's taken cues and elements from flute traditions that still have power and currency - the European flute with it's purity, brilliance and dexterity, the earthy simplicity of bamboos from Papua New Guinea, the shamanism of Amazonian ritual instruments, the far east refinement of Shakuhachi and Nohkan (he studied with Yamaguchi Goro in the 1980s), the dynamism of the Gaita, the timbral thickness of Kaval and Neh, to name just a few. But above all the flute traditions of the Solomon Islands have been a great inspiration. The second track on this release, For Celina Rokona honours a great flute player from Ataa, in North East Malaita. She played the Sukute, a curious combination of flute and percussion, and this inspired the second piece on this release.Having said that, he's an experimentalist, not much interested in reproducing known systems - this isn't another world music potpourri. He maintains a focus on the sheer magic of sonic materiality. When a jet stream crashes against an edge, the air column vibrates - sound magically springs into existence. On guitars we see the vibrating string, on drums the skin, or with speakers the cardboard cone wobbles - but here whatever the frequency or dynamic we see nothing. This shamanistic 'coming into the world' has produced diverse flute traditions for millennia and perhaps this invisible genesis is why, in many cultures, the instrument is associated with the supernatural.
