Grow EP

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Calibre’s proliferation remains at a high as we cascade into another year. His output during 2016 was remarkable even by his standards… This year looks set to be even more amplified and it starts this Friday with Grow, the title track of his last album that was never actually on his last album. It’s not as confusing as it sounds: the album Grow was released on Craig Richards’ label The Nothing Special. As a label focused more on the free-form, experimental fringes of techno and electronica, it gave Calibre a chance to really explore a deep, more technoid focused side to his work and present tracks he had never played publicly before. An introspective and very personal project; some of the album’s music dates back to the early 2000s and the album itself took Calibre and Craig several years to fine tune into the stark, dark and provocative experience that landed late last year on vinyl adorned with Craig’s striking artwork.

Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Japanese noise legend Masami Akita (Merzbow) share a mutual love for the EMS Synthi, a British synthesizer from the early '70s that's notorious for its patch matrix, portability and distinct tone. Astonishingly, these two disparate artists meld into a single sound as they flex the analogue circuitry of the EMS Synthi in new ways. They give this classic synth a modern workout and prove that, in capable hands, a 40 year old analogue synthesizer is a tool for the ages.

Every fan of unique psychedelia (The Zodiac) and mind-bending electronic music (the two others) should certainly lend an ear to these three masterpieces, but there was more to come. 'Plantasia' has been labeled "warm earth music for plants and the people who love them". Revealing a sound that was less dark than heard on his previous releases, this Moog-dominated album offers dreamy and colourful compositions that work like a score to an imaginary movie.

Quietly building an enthusiastic following with a steady stream of EPs andsingles, M.O.O.N.'s debut full-length 'Clinically Blase' creatively navigatesa wide range of emotive synthesizer music deviating from dancegearedtropes in favor of freer arrangements and lush instrumentation. While the rhythms are rooted in variants of house, boogie, and synth-pop'Clinically Blase' never tips it's hand stylistically in any particular directionresulting in a playful balance of retro sounds and futuristicideas highlighting a deft melodic sensibility.Separated by interludes, 'Clinically Blase' is split into three sections thatexplore variations on similar themes and shared sounds recording livepercussion, guitar, piano, and bass in addition to software instruments andclassic analog synth gear. The album's beatless opener "Pilot" signals departure with a vocal looprendered aquatic over bright, ringing piano chords - sounds which makeappearances again on the album's arpeggiating centerpiece "Alicia" and onthe closer "Finale". The smooth "Time" unwinds with unexpected jazzychords and expressive treated trumpet lifting it skyward. There are plentyof moments made for movement with the ecstatic drumwork andstratospheric pads of "Jon F", the bouncing 303 of "Leaning In", or thefunky slo-mo arpeggiated disco roll of "Medium Cool". The sequencingties together 'Clinically Blase' into a compelling journey, ebbing andflowing in energy, timbre, and tempo much like a thoughtful, continuousDJ mix.

Behind this malleable moniker we find Christian Rye Hougaard – an Aarhus-based producer whose ambient artistry has been introduced to the world under a multitude of guises such as Space Program, CR Hougaard and Forvarsel. ‘Multi Terrain’ is his vinyl debut and his second release at Infinite Waves, who also issued the cassette ‘Standard Operating Procedures’ (IW-49) in early 2016. ‘Multi Terrain’ is in many ways the preliminary culmination of Hougaard’s experiments with the meet-up of ambient textures and electronic beats. Contrasts are evident and abundant – from the title’s military dichotomy to the music’s organic, almost freeform amalgamation of atmospheric field recordings and mechanical, IDM-inflected rhythms, leaving the four-to-the-floor just there, dropped on the floor.

Son Ash is synth maestro and producer Andreas Pallisgaard’s solo excursions. A slew of similar titles are applicable to Simon Littauer, who gets his debut on Infinite Waves with three original compositions, brought about with a few helping hands from musical partners Nikolaj Torp and Malthe Beck. Finally, Underwater Gestures also welcomes Zanzi aboard Infinite Waves - while Aske Zidore and Suni Zachariasen’s earlier outing as Hong Kong Ladyboys did see a release on the label, their new conjoined project Zanzi and its seven tracks are all premiering on Underwater Gestures.

Leo Svirsky is a composer, improviser, pianist and accordionist based in the Hague, Netherlands. As a composer, his work explores how the instability of listening itself transforms the perception of musical semantics and affect. Disorientations of memory and spatial awareness are nevertheless bounded by a rootedness in song and story. With his new work, Heights in Depths, Svirsky examines psychoacoustics through way of glistening reeds. Architectural in its scope, these sine wave esq sounds are pinned to each corner of the listeners space, radiating like Dan Flavin sculptures in the room. Executed in two side long compositions, the laser like focus of these sounds bend and swirl, slowly drifting in and out of phase of one another, while all along making a grandiose evolution in the ultimate composition. Recorded on Easter Sunday at Gallery W139 in Amsterdam, Heights in Depths draws a map for the listener that has the arrows pointed in all directions. Accompanied by Norman Cohn's text "The Pursuit of the Millennium: Revolutionary Millenarians and Mystical Anarchists of the Middle Ages" - Svirsky's musical end game is down an infinite hallway lined with infinite mirrors - "To descend from the oneness or Eternity, into the multiplicity, is to lose ourselves in an endlesse Labyrinth."

Hatti Vatti, real name Piotr Kalinski, is one of the Polish underground's most vital figures. He is known for his analogue focused interpretations of an array of sounds, from ambient to footwork. He's been releasing avant-garde electronica on Polish, yet internationally recognized, labels like Absys and Moonshine since 2009 and engaged in collabos with artists like Synkro of Apollo Records fame and Nanook Of The North project alongside composer Stefan Wesołowski, as featured on Boiler Room. Hatti Vatti is perhaps one of the very few Polish electronic artists gaining even more attention abroad. He toured Northern Hemisphere from Japan and South Korea to Greenland and Iceland where he's a frequent visitor. While working on "SZUM" (noise or hiss in Polish), his first longplay since 2014, Hatti Vatti was invited by Polish National Audiovisual Institute to join RE:VIVE - a project curated by the Netherlands Institute of Sound & Vision that already resulted with a strikingly original LP from Lakker in 2016. Having already been inspired by the pioneering work of artists from the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio, founded in 1962, as well as by animated film scores of the 60s, 70s and 80s, RE:VIVE presented Hatti Vatti with the unmissable opportunity to delve with unprecedented access into the vast archives of the Polish National Audiovisual Institute in Warsaw. Here, he took the original, sometimes fractured yet melodic compositions he had been working on, and injected with a haunting layer of Iron Curtain era psychedelia. Far beyond a typical 'sampledelic' excursion, SZUM is the sound of a cutting edge electronic craftsman, reimagining his forward thinking work alongside the pioneering ghosts of the past. Album offers a typically bold, retro futuristic exploration of Poland's rich history of sound experimentation, one that simultaneously corresponds closely with contemporary issues and events in the country.

Previously the main guy behind earlier label faves ‘Detox Twins’, “Minor Activity” is already being highly lauded from online blogs and early reviews and just recently, Andrew Weatherall has already added 2 ace cuts to his DJ set. There truly is no filler amongst the album’s 10 cuts, which in Mark’s own words “reveal a 10 track slow dive into the sinuous distraction of love that is -however briefly or not- owned or desired by every breather to walk their years until dust. Simple movements in synthesis providing currency for this foray of dark electro pop”Whilst lyrically he admits to a fondness to -and a tip of the cap- in places, to Dylan Thomas, Henry Miller and William Wordsworth.Across the 10 tracks here, you’re instantly drawn to that classic early Mute and Some Bizarre sound; Fad Gadget, Vince Clarke, early Soft Cell perhaps, but continued plays reveal not only the darker edge that Mark alludes to above, but a thoroughly modern, of it’s time, set of gorgeously crafted melodies and a classy songwriting guile, not to mention being stacked top to bottom with potential dancefloor fillers… An absolute must for all minimal synth, electropop heads; it really is a wonderful record and will no doubt disappear dead quick as other PY releases show….

Sometimes you can tell from the first listen of a recording that its creator has a totalizing vision that transcends time and genre. You will experience this rare sensation when you play Panoram's “A Doom With A View.” The Italian producer has tapped into a vein of surrealist sonic collage that's at once allusive and elusive. Th e album parades baffling micro-movements past your ears like a secret history of misunderstood musical remnants heard on damaged media formats, 50 years are a catastrophic disaster. It exposes continuity and logic as specious myths; jettisoning these vestigial elements in order to make space for a higher form of aural alchemy. A Doom With A View's two long tracks come off as a scrambled signal from the final crackles of the information age; at times you feel as if this music's been filtered through an advanced race's sensorium before it penetrates your lowly mortal ears. Its transitions seem at once logical and absurd. Just when you think you have a grip on its progress, Panoram makes a mockery of your assumptions. He bathes guitars and keyboards in a space-age sheen and swathes them in freaky interstellar frequencies and disturbing turbulence. Despite the Andromeda Strain-like chaos, something sensual and dramatic's thrumming under the surface. This is the soundtrack to a golden age that's rusting around the edges. Its degradation holds you rapt, its Elysian inferno beckons you to hum along to its eroding siren song. In a perfect world, A Doom With A View would be the last thing you hear in this life.

WRWTFWW & Palto Flats Records are ecstatic to announce the highly-anticipated reissue of Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's sought after and timeless ambient / minimal album “Through The Looking Glass", originally released in 1983 by RCA Japan. Considered a Holy Grail of Japanese music by many, “Through The Looking Glass” is Midori Takada's first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. The fully licensed reissue is available as a single 33rpm LP and a limited 45rpm DLP, both cut directly from the original studio reels (AAA), at Emil Berliner (formerly the in-house recording department of renowned classical record label Deutsche Grammophon) for the 45rpm DLP, and at the equally famous Frankfurter SST Studio for the LP. It is also available in CD format for the first time. All versions come with extensive liner notes. Bio Midori Takada is a composer, multi percussionist, and theater artist renowned in Japanese vanguard circles. She will tour Europe this year. Midori released two solo albums: “Through The Looking Glass” and “Tree Of Life” and wrote music for Tadashi Suzuki's theater plays. Her hypnotic, minimalist music is based in the concept of coherence between sound and the human body.

Native Instrument is a Berlin based sound collaboration bringing together the fieldrecordings archive of Felicity Mangan and the abstract vocabulary of Stine Janvin MotlandOften referred to as insect techno, Native Instrument’s music is constructed using electronic and vocal adaptations of wildlife audio recordings originating mainly from the Australian and North European fauna; mixing the natural rhythms of animal calls with digital effects and vocal imitations, Native Instrument enlightens a sonic ambiguity between rural nature, electronics, and the human voice. With their debut release Camo, Native Instrument presents their true artificial nature; sound collages moving between tropical ambience, club inspired bug beats and amphibian trance. With Deep Frog we could be listening to a plainchant chorus of crickets or a drone race, both egged on by a flock of birds, whilst Vögel Unserer Heimat opens to a racket of running water whooping macaques and busied insectoid pulses building to a purposeful techno march.Waldfest follows in pursuit of a more crepuscular scene threading Donato Dozzy-esque pulses thru an intensely detailed pastoral scene of chattering dolphins and panicked cicadas - we’ve no idea what they’re doing together on the Wald, either - before Emutional Flutes rotates a crackly narration from a nature documentary amid a call centre of nattering feathered creatures, striking a very odd and disorienting balance of stasis and psychotomimetic repetition maybe best termed as amphibian trance.

Following on from that hugely sought-after Green Graves issue by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, Hospital Productions re-examine a longstanding tradition of industrial ambient music on this exceptional collaboration between two of the label’s most consistently innovative, highly absorbing producers.Originally released in a private press run of handmade tapes, the collaboration was made in person with both Alberich and Lussuria making use of Digital synths in homage to that distinctly European scene of the mid 90’s that combined hardcore Industrial textures with Ambient pulses. It’s a sound you’ll be familiar with if you’ve immersed yourself in the most unnervingly quiet sections of the last few Prurient albums, building a kind of futuristic soundscape situated somewhere between David Lynch, Kevin Drumm and a more dystopian variant of Brad Fiedel’s distinctive soundtrack to The Terminator.Alberich’s instinct for harsh propulsive rhythms is here tempered by Lussuria’s weird topography, the digital rendering adding a kind of artificial foundation quite removed from the throbbing earthiness you’d find on a hardware session. Instead, the more linear trajectory of so many dark Ambient excursions is replaced with a constantly shifting landscape, veering from an oddly displaced vocal narrative into pounded, crumbling rhythms at some points, while those sinking subbass sands keep things resolutely atmospheric for the duration. There are no concessions to that blackened aesthetic here, if you were into Green Graves or want to immerse yourself in one of the most brutally atmospheric albums you’ll hear this year, we urge you to check it out.

The Darkest Wave

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Arguably the label’s highest profile release thus far; the mighty Pye Corner Audio joining forces with PY label mate Faten Kanaan for an ace split 45.In PCA's Martin Jenkins' own words: “Faten Kanaan first came to my attention with her wonderful cassette release 'EP'. We started corresponding shortly after that and I always had it in mind that we should collaborate on something. So when PY asked if I would contribute to the label, and then released Faten's 'The Botanist & The Archaeologist' LP things seemed perfectly aligned”.A side “The Darkest Wave” features pulsing icy synth drones over which Faten’s cool NY narrative owes nods to some 70’s Carpenter-eque VHS chillwave soundtrack, (not unlike some of Umberto’s work of the last decade or so.) A beautifully evolving, slow burner piece which over continuous plays reveals one of the year’s great A sides so far. The B side is a stripped down piece more in keeping with the seminal minimal synth singles of the late 70s beloved by both artist and label here. Indeed, Martin Jenkins’ sleeve art also doffs it’s cap to the artwork feel of some of those legendary post punk 45s.A magical 45 released as a one time pressing of 500 45s on vinyl only with Polytechnic Youth discography card. Incidentally.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
This release heralds the start of the 20th anniversary of Jazzanova as internationally renowned remixers. That is to say, it was in the summer of 1997 when the very first remix by Jazzanova was released, the one for United Future Organization's „Friends... We'll Be“ on Gilles Peterson's founded label Talkin’ Loud. Said remix can be found on the first edition of the by now accumulated to a trilogy compilation series. When the first part covers the early, yeasty years from 1997 to 2000, the second episode pays tribute to the years from 2002 to 2005 and the third sequel takes the last few years, the lapse of time from 2006 to 2016 to task. This decade as well was – as you can hear strongly by listening to this long player – a very prosperous, inspiring productive period for Jazzanova. How fast time flies is displayed by these nine selected tracks from the last ten years. All of them still sound as if they have been released just yesterday.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Expat, visual and sound artist Astrid Gnosis explores social and emotional collapse through her work — a heady mix of abstract textures, fractured beats, cinematic atmos-pherics, twisted melodies and off-the-wall vocals. Now living and working in London, Astrid began writing music when she was just 13 years old. She's crafted sonic installations for exhibitions and art performances, alone and col-laborating with other artists. She’s made the soundtracks and sound design for a number of short films, the most recent will be shown at the London Short Film Festival 2017. “Music alone is a vessel, it diplomatically drives consciousness into reflection. Words seemed to limit this journey” she continues “but increasingly I felt the urge to narrow my language, and incorporate more violence into music”, she says, “because for me it is vital to speak of the anger and hopes of my generation, and it is now we’re most angry.”‘Agnosis’, a conceptual six-track EP is about “tacit conflict and subsequent collapse”, painting a greying, dystopian picture of where our futures might be headed. “ Agnosis means ignorance in greek, this EP is the first part of a cognitive map of fear, strength, faith, fate, love and hate.”These themes are catapulted into flux across all six tracks on ‘Agnosis’; from the hollowed out ambience on gentle opener, ‘Arab Spring’, the off-kilter experimentalism and crunchy beats of ‘Severe Delays’ to the rebellious, bastardised hard techno of final track, ‘Titan’, Astrid, in her own words, ‘glorifies discomfort’.While designed to challenge every aspect of the listening experience, Astrid’s work on ‘Agnosis’ — although fiercely bound to her own philosophical and socio-political narrative — is testament to a musician who can match one-of-a-kind sound design with raw, unfil-tered musical ideas.“I speak for an absolute re-envisioning of our belief systems”, Astrid explains, “for the destigmatisation of words and symbols, to discourage fear not with mere entertainment and distraction, but with thought. That’s who I try to be.”

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Apparel Music return with the introduction of a brand new sub label - Apparel Tronic. The intention for this new division of sound is to shift focus towards UK-rooted Beats, Nu-Jazz, Downtempo and Jungle - a collection of styles the label like to term ‘Bliss-Beat'. This treasured and futile basis of influence gives rise to Giuseppe D'Alessandro a.k.a KiSK and Ludovico Schilling SCHiLLiNG's new project which they inaugurate with the ‘Hella' LP from SCHiLLiNG himself: a collection UKindebted dance tracks that meld influences from Jungle, Breaks and Hip Hop. Originally born in Milan - Schilling relies on a process he likes to describe as ‘contamination' of sound which entails the layering of field recordings and the sounds of his home environment with those of synths, real instruments and samples. This approach brands a clear stamp on his productions and enables him to create a truly singular strand of dance music and it's this that glues together the 9 disparate tracks of Hella. Moving from the cascading breaks of the LP's introduction ‘Anarcoide' to the woozy and textural ‘Black Lighter' - the album begins to build a spectral mood as it progresses. Tracks such as ‘Flesh Is Weak' and ‘Madting' draw influence from the golden-era of Bristol's Trip-Hop while tracks such as ‘Snooker Club' and ‘Viejos' delve into more caliginous, IDM territory. The result is a rich and varied collection that demonstrates Apparel Music's unwavering ability to continue to keep listeners guessing.

In a sense, 'Miss Slipper/Lewes', the new double sided 7” by Jono Podmore (Kumo, metamono, co-producer of Can’s 'The Lost Tapes') and Düsseldorf-based sound writer and performance artist Swantje Lichtenstein is as much a literary work as it is a musical release, a piece of sound art which charts the grey and still largely unexplored area between speech and studio as musical instrument, between poetry and the audio format. There’s a high-end visual dimension also - the cover is designed by sought after artist Michaela Eichwald.

Fresh Water is the debut work by London based musician and visual artist, Jake Marshall. Across eight tracks Marshall twirls and bends his sound palette around motifs of emergency and crisis; “I was interested in distress sounds, sirens, flares etc”. The many sonic limitations in Fresh Water demonstrate Marshall’s uniqueness. All kinds of plastic, caustic sounds, German ambulance sirens, bleeps rattling off unknown morse code, the highly synthetic strings emerging from the silence, it creates a somehow organic yet inhumane, but addictive turbulence.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Dominique Lawalree (b. 1954) is a composer born and based in Brussels. First Meeting is Lawalree's first archival release to date. Culled from four different albums originally self-published on his private label Editions Walrus, circa 1978-1982, this compilation highlights the composer's unique sense of ambient and minimal composition. Originally considered for release on Brian Eno's Obscure Records, Lawalree's music is now no longer hidden. In this collection the listener finds the sounds of piano, synthesizers, percussion, wurlitzer, organ, and voice, all performed by Lawalree. Using these tools Dominique creates miniature themes that gallop across the speakers in slow motion, stretching our normal sense of dynamics and color, effortlessly widening the stereo plane. On "Musique Satieerique," Dominique pays homage to the influence of Satie with simple repeated piano figures and a lush field of organs and flutes. And on other selections, like "Le Maison Des 5 Elements," he takes a more wistful, ambient approach, layering keyboard lines, and invoking found/tape sounds to create a hypnogogic world of his own. Childlike in its playfulness and surreal to the bone, the music spins like a carrousel placed inside the Rothko Chapel. Lawalree's sense of timbre, tone, and overarching composition is like an impression of a home movie whose charm lies in its knowledge of intimacy, shared by few. An incantation of innocence.

Alexander Palmestal was fifty procent of the electro duo Pistol Disco - a band that during the 00's bustled around in the music scene of Gothenburg and became known for having a certain sound and for their unpredictable and often magical live shows. The later incarnation of the band took a step away from the German 70's influences to move towards a more club friendly universe. In 2015 the band released the 7inch 'Goo/Pool' on Hoga Nord Rekords which was their last release and now Palmestal, under the name Mythologen, make a release on Hoga Nord Rekords.Mythologen continues building on the foundations that Pistol Disco and Palmestal's other band Iberia was made upon. The songs on this album named 'Mythologen' is the perfect combination of the fragility and melancholy of Iberia and Pistol Disco's monotony and drive. Underneath layers of dreamy, free floating synthesizers and restrained yet steady drumbeats lies muffled melodies waiting for the air to be let in. And then, all of a sudden the clouds disappear and the sunlight is beaming down over the music, like on the closing track 'Brighter Summer Day'. In other songs on the album the darkness is more present, embodied by polyrhythmic tribal drums giving the music weight and suggestion.'Mythologen' is the soundtrack for recovering from a depression. The album seduces the whole spectrum of your moodswings, eliminates your ego and moves your focus from the past to the future.

The tension throughout the EP is palpable, with the shaping of the tension providing the substance of his signature style. Non club tracks for open minded clubs.

His background in DIY punk and noise is easily identified in his approach to both sound production, general aesthetics, and overall attitude. “I’m Not a Heaven Man” is characterized by a poetic and tape hissed melancholy, sensibly combined with a lo-fi experimental character rendering it a deeply personal take on contemporary electronic music. Slow pulsations of sequenced drones combined with noise with strong emphasis on atmosphere make “I’m Not A Heaven Man” an exquisitve piece of ambient sound design. Limited to 300 copies.

The polymorphism of Diwan Clinic’s integrity is very nearly non-dualistic in it’s fragmentation. The tenacity of the EP’s opener Eyenihilator (Morning-Bed Funk) is truly passably cryptic in it’s clairvoyance, yet lurid in it’s momentary essence. The haunting yet liberating deviousness of Marg’s independency is rather unorthodox in the EP’s ecology, but fits in absolutely. Side B’s Shatorooz transduces the stomping isomorphism of foresight as independent as in it’s reverberating sanctimoniousness. The lush omnipotence of Eyenihilator (Non-Existent Rules Cut) is dreadfully soothing and refurbishes the previous noise of Diwan Clinic’s antecedent zenith.

In fact Schulze eventually sold the label in 1983, which started to release a plethora of acts loosely grouped around the NAM genre.

He has since recovered, and Braveyoung are eager for their long-awaited second album to see the light of day. The album unfolds like an ominous premonition of the turbulent years since its completion. Brooding drones and chamber string arrangements shape these stripped-down eulogies, but the menace of their punk roots remains. The album takes its name from text in Czech author Milan Kundera’s novel, Ignorance.

We live in the era of 'more'. We spend our days trying to keep up with a seemingly infinite range of links to follow, pictures to see, sounds to hear, places to go, objects to desire, events to anticipate, heroes to cherish and villains to loath. But rather than freeing, too many options can become paralyzing. Consequently, we often find ourselves frustrated because of the experiences we will never have... without even knowing what we really want. The same goes with music creation in digital environments. Too many possibilities can also mean a tyranny of the "what if...". In this light, celebrating 'less' becomes vital. And that's exactly what swedish producer and Studio Barnhus affiliate Simon Haydo does in 'Redux'. All of the sounds in the album's nine tracks come from just one synth: the Korg MS20. As Simon puts it, the idea was to "maximize the use of less, basically. Less gear, less effects, less input from other people, less everything."Using only between 2 and 6 channels for every track, the result is a stripped but surprisingly rich sound, that delineates spatial Techno vignettes coated with the unmistakable charac- ter of the MS20 filters. Even more interestingly, this restraint is not only applied gear-wise, but also from an emotional point of view. "Instead of involving my own feelings, I let the voice of the MS20 take care of it", says Simon. All this makes 'Redux' an expression of techno in its purest form. After all, it's a kind of music that has always gravitated around simplicity, austerity and, of course, the believe that the machines have their own soul.

Fans of electronic oddities, eerie cinematic audio-landscapes, Piero Umiliani or Bernard Parmegiani will rejoice at this full-length musical adventure that could very well be the soundtrack for a film in which characters from a 70s Italian horror movie visit a distant (forbidden) planet from a 50s sci-movie. It's bizarre, hypnotizing, slightly spooky, always out-of-this-world and goddamn BRILLIANT! Nino Nardini, also known as Georges Teperino, had a very fruitful career in library music, much like longtime collaborator Roger Roger.

Theomatic is back with a surprise 12-inch from the label's mainman An-2. Mint EP is a collection of four space-boogie jams spanning a variety of moods and tempos that have been recorded over the period of last couple of years. The lo-fi beats and pulsating kalimba-esque arpeggios on ‘Sigint' create an instant feel of a sci-fi movie soundtrack, while an ultra-deep kick drum and a punchy bass on ‘Mint' is a sure way to test your speaker performance. Things get more chilled and pensive on the flipside with ‘Dusky Downtown''s brooding synthwork and rolling pads taking you on a stroll along glittering neon-lit city streets. Last, but not least, Amberflame's take on ‘Dusky Downtown' is a steaming affair that uses tight compression and lush synths and to create that special euphoric dancefloor moment.

The Band > SCARLETT'S FALL is a duo formed in 2014 by Ruth Childs (British-American performance artist and singer based in Geneva) and Ste?phane Vecchione (Swiss performance artist and musician based in Lausanne). They define themselves as dirty-girlie-kitchen-pop mixing catchy melodies and repetitive looping with fragile vocals and provocative texts. Out of their playfully ironic and poetic universe you can ear shades of CAN, Broadcast and Young Marble Giants. SCARLETT'S FALL toured their first album all over Switzerland and supported Tricky, Peaches and Anika. http://www.scarlettsfall.com The Album > “SCARLETT'S SCARED” is SCARLETT'S FALL ironically seductive second album. It all started with an (blue) demonstration vinyl entitled “The Incredible Sounds of the Synclavier II” released by New England Digital Corp in 1981 to promote the first digital sampling system. Its content gave the basic atmosphere for the whole album: each of the 10 tracks samples a specific Synclavier sound. Add haunting melodies, mysterious vocals and fun beats and you get “SCARLETT'S SCARED” complete. As the title suggests “SCARLETT'S SCARED” is about being scared and takes its roots from vintage movies such as Klute (1971) and Metti Una Sera a Cena (1969) that deals with phone stalkers, insomnia, sexual tension, vampires, ghosts and explosive watermelon attack!

We're back again with Russian Artist, Module One. At just 22 years-old he's already had a stack of releases including an ambient album on Detroit Underground. ‘Hometown' was written in the depths of Russia in a place called Novocherkassk, whose industrial cityscapes made a great impact on the overall sound of the album. Most of the tracks were written in a few takes. Most notably, the track ‘Innermost Self' is a dedication to Module One's grandma who passed away a short time ago. Due to a tragic sequence of events, he was unable to see her before she fell into a coma. The track is overloaded with tension and fear as well as stark anxiety. Vinyl tastes better…

Beautiful piano melodies, ballads drawing their inspiration from jazz, classical music and cinematic imagery, hummed choruses, a mood at the crossroad of nostalgia and reverie, instruments with uncanny timbre and charm, chiseled percussions, added to a subtle electronic production, this is the recipe for Tout Va Bien, the second solo album by French composer Ezechiel Pailhès. All this is reflected in the opening track, River Day, which begins with “prepared piano” sounds (a technique mastered by Ezechiel, which consists in placing different objects on the strings of the piano, to create singular percussive notes). This deliberately mysterious and poetic introduction, supported by light electronic effects, is soon combined with a light beat, organ chords and vocalisations by the artist, which gradually transform the track into a ritornello, with both nostalgic and lighthearted tones. As the artist states it: “We could describe this type of emotion as a kind of endearing nostalgia, close to saudade,” i.e. the Portuguese term expressing the idea of a light melancholy stripped of its sickly aspect, or a “haunted craving” as the singer and composer Pierre Barouh nicely put it. “This feeling comes naturally to me when I write. Generally, in my music, I seek a form of soothing, of eternity even, (without meaning to sound pretentious). This is something I encounter in classical music, which is what I listen to most.” Even if he defines himself as a “jolly fellow” (which is confirmed by the music and reputation of his electro-pop duo Nôze), when chatting to him, he comes across as quite gentle and stellar, just like this collection of eleven tracks that he composed “in autarky”, en

OK this one’s really special: technically Static Clings is the last record by The Boats; presenting material from their tour-only Typewriter [2006] CD and the Sleepy Insect Music [2010] compilation on vinyl for the first time, along with a great haul of unreleased outtakes and even a megamix of The Boats by Modern Love’s Miles Whittaker (Demdike Stare) and Gaz Howell (G.H.) in their lesser spotted Pendle Coven guise. It’s essentially all outtakes c. 2004-2006 from their early releases for Moteer plus the aforementioned rarities, clutching 13 cuts which have been left to mature over the last decade or so, and now provide a slightly more scattered but ever-enduring overview of Andrew Hargreaves (Tape Loop Orchestra, The Mistys) and Craig Tattersall’s (The Remote Viewer, Hood) cherished time together in this vessel. We absolutely have to highlight the sublime History Of Tape Hisses for what sounds like Instrumentals-era Arthur Russell jamming with Jan Jelinek, and likewise Why You Wanna Do This, but also the ghostly vignette Danny Norbury, dedicated to the cellist and another key member of their fold, and also for the salty kiss of their distorted hymn May Our Enemies Never Find Happiness (Version), the wobbly oddity of You Didn’t Expect Me To Care, and lastly the perfectly opaque pop of Pendle Coven’s remix, which uncannily recalls Uwe Schmidt’s Pop Artificielle output as LB.Sad to say they might now have to decommission Craig’s crackle-box (actually an old B&H packet full of trapped woodlice, the evil b*stard) but it’s dead lovely to have this new slab of (old) material in our mitts and finally complete our full fleet of The Boats’ catalogue.

Next in The Boats’ vital vinyl reissue series, their 3rd album Tomorrow Time [2006] finds Andrew Hargreaves and Craig Tattersall embracing a host of collaborators on a fuzzy, downbeat blend of ambient and indie-pop themes, wrapping fragile vocals from Elaine Reynolds and Chris Stewart (Need More Sources) to a patented framework of prepared piano, strings and elusive electronics in the wake of their instrumental duo session, We Made It For You [2005]. With the benefit of hindsight, Tomorrow Time takes on a curiously prescient nature; arriving a year prior to the biggest financial collapse for generations, at a time when the “authenticity” of folk music was fetishised by posh people as Wyrd Folk (or smth?) and the other main cultural points of reference were either retro-indie guitar bands, IDM or boisterous grime and dubstep. However, The Boats’ combination of lower case pop with rustling electro and acoustic textures quietly stuck out like a sore toe, and when combined the aggressive title tracks points towards a quiet but growing dissatisfaction with perceived excess in music, culture, or at least the same old same old.In that sense, the group’s roots in avant garde minimalism and myriad other non-commercial and pop styles really come thru on Tomorrow Time, but carefully distilled into an absorbing, subtly detailed sounds they can claim as their own, and quite unlike anything before or since - although many have tried to imitate it!

So, so happy to see this first ever vinyl edition of The Boats’ second album, We Made It For You, released in 2005 - this necessary vinyl edition forms a typically tender and heart-warming follow-up to their much loved and influential debut. On their second album Andrew and Craig coaxed out a purely instrumental suite, leaving Elaine to her own devices (she would return on Tomorrow Time) while they drifted off into the sweetest reveries knitting passages of frayed, breezy solo piano and electronics nodding to Harold Budd, William Basinski or The Caretaker with the kind of burbling, gently glitching rhythmic tributaries that you’d expect from Isan, SND or Jan Jelinek. All the tracks inside are named after their mates (hope they still are!), and effectively forms a sort of sketchbook of meditations on each character or group, like the rugged, melancholy Miles, Sean and Bodie is definitely nodding to them Demdikes and their soundbwoy, and you’ll just have to imagine the rest. Compared with other releases of that era, it’s dated remarkably well as a record and a sound, which is most likely due to their future-proofing patina of distressed crackle and the electro-acoustic sound sensitivity of their approach to the material, managing to convey a quiet, intimate beauty without ever overstating it.Gorgeous music

The Boats’ gorgeous debut album Songs By The Sea [2004] turns up on vinyl! Scrolling thru the mists of time to 2004, a very different world indeed, and The Boats formed as an outlet for Kraftwerk-addicted composer Andrew Hargreaves and his pal, Craig Tattersall, fresh from a decade spent with cult post-rock group Hood and as half of The Remote Viewer, to pursue the ideas of post-rock, modern classical and lo-fi electronica along more intimate, personalised ginnels of folk and ambient music, with the cherry on their home-baked treats provided by vocals from another close friend, Elaine Reynolds.Songs By The Sea was their wistful and charmingly humble introduction to the world; ten tracks balancing exquisitely pop-wise songwriting with gently pulsing, elusive electronics and a patina of crackle that became a real signature of their sound long before everyone else cottoned on and starting putting out pale imitations. We don’t want to gush about it too much but, listening to it now, and on a format the album always quietly yearned for, it’s just chokingly nostalgic in its own, low-key and endearing style and leaves little doubt in our minds that Songs By The Sea is one of the finest ambient-pop records to emerge from this region....

Dominick Fernow’s Hospital Productions hail the obscure, transfixing poetry and exquisite gothic pall of Vilains Bonshommes; a Rimbaud-inspired duo including members of Canada’s Contrepoison and Norwegian group, Mare.Éternité Retrouvée was first released as a cassette edition on Norway’s Fossbrenna Creations and remains the duo’s only available output. Apparently a further album was promised, yet never manifested, which only serves to heighten the mystery of this one; their lone, exceptional iteration. Stripped to the bare essentials of drum machine, analog synth and vocals rendered in acres of sepulchral space, the 3-track EP draws listeners into a flawlessly realised sphere of dark influence where minimalist, desiccated harmonies and bony rhythms are embedded against unfathomably bombed out, maximalist backdrops - what most would define as unmistakably gothic.Poised, arch and evoking a sense of clutching power from the jaws of despair, the EP speaks to life’s loneliest but formative experiences both literally, through the use of Rimbaud’s tortured poetry in the sagging heave of L’Éternité, and metaphorically, through economically authentic sound design in the dirges of Death Shines On Triumphant Days and The Ages Anew which both suspend the listener by icy hooks at the core of it all.

Beneath’s Mistry label explores post-club dimensions with Kailin’s debut album featuring eight tracks of hazy hooks, engulfing subs and grimy thizz rent in acres of space. Beneath describes it perfectly as “uplifting whilst also being dread filled...”Much of the appeal of electronic music lies within the listener’s ability to divine meaning from abstraction, often according to their own cultural conditioning. Kailin’s enigmatic debut album of suggestive, dread-filled atmospheres and elusive, noise-sculpted rhythms, collected on Fracture, is essentially fuelled on this notion and perfectly resonates with the aesthetics and ideals conveyed by Beneath’s Mistry label. Making up the first LP release on Mistry after seven club-hingeing EPs from the likes of Batu, Laksa, Chevel and Webstarr, Kailin’s Fracture occupies an introspective middle-distance between perceptions of club and ambient modes of reception by disintegrating dancefloor structures into a near-metaphysical presence with mercurial, vapourising gestures. Like Schrödingers cat in a bassbin, it’s neither or, and possibly both at the same time, depending on your perception. This paradoxical sense of simultaneous detachment and immersion perhaps stems from the album’s production; originally sketched out in a 2 month haze, then left to steep for much longer, before the collection’s nuances and conflicting elements began to reveal themselves in remarkable formations such as the OOBE electro flex of Circling or the midnight quantum jazz dynamics of Gimp, or a really big highlight in the teetering, polymetric ambient pop of Respite. No doubt it’s a fascinating and quintessential turn for Mistry, one which lives up to the label’s name and its roots in the duppie dread effect of UK soundsystem culture, yet never previously revealed by Beneath’s imprint in such absorbing and heady style before now.
