One of the unexpected silver linings of our planet being plunged into the grips of a pandemic has been ASC’s return to Jungle / DnB. Drawing stunned reviews from all corners of the DnB spectrum, the ‘An Exact Science’ EP on Samurai marked the first of a trio of releases in this style. Initially meant only as a one off EP, the creation of ‘An Exact Science’ turned on a spark in ASC that propelled him into a new phase of inspiration in his heavily equipped studio. Once an LP project was agreed to, the tunes came rapidly to the point of overflow (hence part 3 of the trilogy set for 2021).

Artilect's third EP for Samurai steps up the brute force and reflects the current global climate of frustration and constricted energy poised to explode. The title track steps with creeping malice, packing taut combustion with nods to the best of 90's era Dillinja. 'Spiral' is the highlight track here - pure futurism, a frenetic unravelling fireball punctuated with searing amen slices and sub punches. 'fk' is a rugged collab with Quartz that perfectly references and updates the golden era of DnB with tear-out amens and dive-bombing sonics. Final track 'Turmoil' is the 'Spiral' companion track, slicing up the clenched sections with rapid fire break hits that unknot themselves in focused propulsion only to be reeled back in tight for the next release. An EP for our times, Artilect continues to establish himself as one of the DnB scenes most promising names advancing the art form.

With his debut LP 'Recon' still fresh, Last Life returns Samurai with the Horde EP. 4 all-new tracks of his signature potency redesigned with new sonic perspectives for 2021.

Elliot Garvey aka Quartz joins Samurai Music with 4 tracks of menacing weight for his debut EP on the label. With previous releases for labels like Metalheadz, Dsci4, and Invisible, Quartz’ powerful mix-downs and his knack for technical tunes that retain the vibe factor has him high on everyone’s radar. Into the Mist was the first tune signed for the Snakes EP, a tune that encapsulates the existing Quartz dark / light style with nods to legacy Drum and Bass perfectly. Snakes and Cluster Bomb are possibly Elliot’s 2 darkest tunes to date, focused, creeping sinistism with hulking constructions. Figure It Out lurks low, still retaining his perfectly focused build strength, but with a subtler approach and a pulsing bounce that burns through in the mix. Already garnering DJ support from the likes of Goldie, Flight, Loxy, Mako, Mantra, Double O and more, the Snakes EP looks set to be a new pinnacle for Quartz productions.

In 2019, ASC decided it was time to return to the music that he grew up on. With a gentle nudge from Presha, the breakbeats were back in the mix and a slew of mid 90’s-inspired drum & bass ensued. The majority of the heavier break-oriented and edit-ladened were set aside for projects with Samurai, however, there were a grip of tracks that were more at home with the older atmospheric / intelligent styles of drum & bass from the mid 90’s. Ideasthesia is the culmination of that work. Four tracks of atmospheric drum & bass in its most unadulterated form. No drum machines at work here, just sped up breakbeats, heavy 808 bass, blissful pads, and ethereal textures. Ideasthesia is a true love letter to a golden age of music which sadly seems long forgotten.

An Exact Science is a fantasy of long time ASC fans have had for many years (ourselves included) come to life with results that surpass our imagined results.

We welcome Eusebeia to the Samurai family with the Fall Then Rise EP. A plan hatched at Membrain Festival 2021 led to the collation of the first Eusebeia tracks for Samurai. Hitting the target with his very first demos for the EP, Eusebeia perfectly constructed 4 tracks that take his signature timeless break-heavy, musically spiced sound and give it a Samurai flavour.

The EP opens with 'Nothing Left To Lose' which marries his soaring Junglist aesthetics to a 126 BPM lurch step, setting an ominous mood before the EP's two centre-piece tunes 'Call Out' and 'Fall The Rise' deal out the heavy hitting break-edits. Always keeping the musical elements to the fore, Eusebeia's engine room of deep sub and breakbeat crunch create an irresistible package that any lover of classic era Jungle/Drum and Bass will feel deep in their bones. Burgeoning closes the EP with a volley of amen edits punctuated by expertly melded fills of the most effective breaks in the business. As always the spice of the track is the reaching pads and deep pulsing sub.

Fall Then Rise is an auspicious debut EP that cements Eusebeia as a perfect addition to the Samurai Music sound palette.

An elusive, anonymous producer whose veil has allowed him to build an impressive sonic identity unhindered by preconceptions, Roho has amassed a loyal following with his contributions to various Samurai compilations, his essential debut EP (Alter Ego) for Homemade Weapons 'Weaponry' label and the Fatum EP alongside Torn.

Long in the works, his Samurai debut solo EP - Elemental - is another peak in his ascendance. Kicking the door in with arguably his biggest track to date - the title track Elemental, the energy level is ratcheted up to overload with a procession of searing amens, pummelling kicks and pulsing mid surges. This track has been causing maximum damage in clubs and is really a time capsule display of the half-step/breaks combination that has come to be synonymous with the Samurai sound. 'The Primal Instinct' leans back slightly to sway and swing the edits as it rolls, while 'Storm' goes for the jugular again with a robust march into a winding amen lash. Torn appears to collaborate on the EP closer 'Phase Unwrapping' and as always, these two like minds create something special - a distortion and fast-paced kick attack with adept fills and rolling percussion.

The final chapter in the Rats: Infest series adds a left-field twist. Mike Parker is one of the most important historical Techno artists for us and has recently released two halftime EPs for Donato Dozzy & Neels Spazio Disponibile label which have been some of our favourite releases by another label in the last few years. Once we heard these EPs, we were on the hunt for some Mike Parker music on Samurai.

Mike Parker creates music live on an all-hardware setup and has done so since the mid-'90s. There is not really anyone that sounds like Mike and we're excited to have him on board at Samurai.

Mike has recalibrated his machines and created an all-new halftime sound specifically for this remix of 'Mainliner' and his upcoming EP for Samurai. Slightly more quirky and less dense than his usual approach, the machine pulses wind around a steadfast step. An unexpected, but perfect mood shift to re-imagine the Mainliner sinisterism.

Baby T makes a welcome return to the label following on from her debut EP Portra. This time the versatility of the Baby T sound is on display with a 140 Breakbeat killer re-sculpture of 'The Spell'. Dealing out euphoric vibe peaks with 4/4 punctuations and Reese/break combinations, this one is a guaranteed peaktime dancefloor weapon. We love Baby T!

Apt E Vol. 1 is the first entry in a series of 12” compilations featuring the off-the-wall projects of various Seattle-based artists.
For this installment, we’ve rounded up tunes from three of Seattle’s heavyweights; Eve Defy, Flora FM and ‘nohup’. With tracks landing somewhere across the spectrum of electro, ghettotech and breakbeat, there’s a little something for everyone here, all the while remaining cohesive.
