In early 2017, CSC Funk Band deliver their most ambitious undertaking yet with “Above The Starrs,” an all-instrumental homage to the seminal East Coast hip-hop duo, Gang Starr, that consisted of MC Guru and the DJ/producer DJ Premier. In the three years since their last full-length “Funkincense,” was selected for SPIN’s “Record Store Day Shopping Guide: 42 Essential Releases,” CSC’s 10 band members have poured hundreds of hours of studio experimentation into this highly anticipated follow-up album, resurrected from the Fat Beats vaults and originally inspired by a live collaboration with rapper Masta Ace at a Guru tribute concert. “Above the Starrs” offers an instant rap-geek curio for anyone who likes hearing bands cross the bounds of sample-based and live hiphop instrumentation. Spearheaded by Colin Langenus, the lead guitarist for prog-punk pioneers USA Is A Monster, CSC Funk Band celebrated its initial success by expanding the lineup to include players plucked from each point of the stylistic spectrum. Although initially concentrating on dancefloorfriendly funk jams, the embryonic group quickly grew out of its partyband britches by absorbing the diverse influence of its new members, including a former GWAR drummer, a keyboardist who plays with the Akron Family, an Anthony Braxton collaborator, and a trombonist for ska legends Bad Manners. Rocking saxes, moog, guitars, trombones, drums, trumpets, a bass, and an oboe, the band is a random, diverse, and eclectic collective whose members draw from their rich histories to effortlessly entertain every flight of fancy while never once stepping out of sync or into categories. The psychedelic avalanche that the band effortlessly induces can be traced up the musical mountain to firm roots in technical mastery, avantexperimentation, and noise-punk ethos.

A chance encounter in Barcelona, Spain brought us together to make this record happen. It’s a precious little marvel of love from Kou Keri Kou and Electric Cowbell Records. The band started with the aim of making music to dance to, taking inspiration from all over the world with no fear: the music from Cuba, Perú, Jamaica, Congo and Nigeria is as important for Kou Keri Kou as the music played in Europe or in the United States. Los Zafiros, Gary Numan, Los Destellos, Radio Futura, Sunny Ade and Kiko Veneno share place in their imagination and help them create open-minded pop that always looks to the future. Their lyrics are sometimes open, sometimes a bit more cryptic, sometimes political and sometimes biting, but always try to communicate with the listeners while trying to make them dance. Only 300 pressed.

Drunken Foreigner Band is a Brooklyn-based ensemble that makes a sprawling electrified iteration of the Akha and Lam Lao musics of Thailand and Laos. The majority of the band's music was learned from cassette tapes of the largely-vocal music traditions, gathered by keyboardist Dave Kadden on his trips to Southeast Asia. Comprising members of Sunwatchers, Invisible Circle and other experimental Brooklyn outfits, they are releasing their debut LP "White Guy Disease" on Electric Cowbell Records and we're over the moon about it!

Electric Cowbell Records offer an limited-edition release 7” 45RPM from Tribu Baharú, a Champeta criolla and world music band from Bogotá, Colombia. It’s been denigrated and damned, boycotted and banned, but it can never be stopped: champeta, the ever evolving, high-energy hybrid of Colombian, African and Afro-Caribbean styles just keeps on coming. And leading a new charge are Tribu Baharú, barrelling out of Bogotá, championing their version of champeta, inspired by the legendary, streetshaking Pico sound-systems of Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Sparkling Congolese guitar driven by high-speed bass and drums and the allanimating upfront singers. Champeta was swept away by the ubiquitous Reggaeton in the ‘90s but Tribu Baharú are part of a wave of nuevas musicas Colombianas based in the capital city who are reestablishing it as a prime force and adding more ingredients to the recipe. Contain traces of soukous, zouk, calypso, mbaqanga, soca, compa Haitiano, rap and ragamuffin. Essential ammunition for the globally-minded DJ. Limited-edition 7” 45RPM on black vinyl. Comes in full-color die-cut sleeve with center hole and full-color label. Recorded in the legendary Bastille/Inner Ear Studios in Arlington, VA, renowned for its punk output of bands like Fugazi and Minor Threat

Clear some room for Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orchestra their instrumental muscle and delivers groovy Chicano-noir atmospherics simmering atop a boiling pot of cowbells, congas, and timbales. The band's signature formula of guitar-heavy, percussion-driven sounds moves further into the fierce sonic terrain of traditional Latin rhythms and hard-hitting funk and soul. Side A’s “Cafeteando” is a dubbed out descarga that nods to an imagined meeting in the lab between a young Willie Colon and Mad Professor. “Camino Infernal/Phantom Weight” on the B-side percolate as a B-movie action sequence of a nail-biting chase scene. The sound is at once an urgent, uptempo psychedelic cumbia complete with twangy, reverb-drenched guitar then halfway through resolves itself into a commanding strut of Latin funk badassery that vacillates between time signatures yet never steps out the deep groove trench that these lads dig. These are heavyweight vintage salsa, and organic cumbia vibes that will surprise you at every turn.

Clear some room for Dos Santos Anti-Beat Orchestra from Chicago. Definitively Latin-tinged, it's hard to pin an exact genre or sub-genre on the group. For their forthcoming 45RPM 7" on Electric Cowbell, we picked 3 songs off of their recent EP "Fonografic" that highlight their instrumental muscle and delivers groovy Chicano-noir atmospherics simmering atop a boiling pot of cowbells, congas, and timbales.
