Le Jardin Des Especes

Release:2017 / CA – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Music critic Byron Coley characterized, in Wire Magazine, the last two Héliodrome releases as ”Psych-spattered neo-dreamy avant-rock” and “Freaked variant on the european Rock in Opposition tradition”. The best attempt yet to describe the music of this Montreal experimental rap outfit.

If Héliodrome’s first full length “La lumière ordinaire du jour” plundered wholeheartedly in obscure free-jazz references, subsequent releases pushed the envelope further to include more live instruments. To compose “Le Jardin des Espèces”, the duo of Khyro (rap, electronics) and ypl (guitars, synths), were joined by drummer Samuel Bobony (Black Givre, Avec le soleil sortant de sa bouche), Pierre-Guilhem Roudet on trombone and Eric Gingras (Enfant Magique, Avec le soleil sortant de sa bouche) on bass and synths.

This led to the recording of live improvisation sessions in the summer of 2014, later reworked and rearranged by Scott Da Ros (Endemik Music). Blending rap, free-jazz and experimental rock, this mixture hints towards a specific musical era, close to the French record label Futura (Red Noise, Fille Qui Mousse, Barricade). Needless to say that “Le Jardin des Espèces” is a strange record, willingly embracing the Rock in Opposition aesthetic.

With this new record, Héliodrome pushes further towards it’s own musical genre, that could be qualified as Rap in Opposition.
