After their debut mixtape “Clear Soul Radio”(2010), follow-up EP “The Departure”, an A3C Festival appearance, two SXSX showcases, induction to Red Bull Academy’s Soundstage program, and performances with Tanya Morgan, Just Blaze, Alchemist, Talib Kweli, and Freeway, the release of 2012’s “Detroit Revolutions” LP put the Detroit collective Clear Soul Forces on the radar of hip hop fans worldwide – led by the viral hit Get No Better. Since then, CSF has toured the globe, released three (Gold PP7s, Fab Five, Still) albums with Fat Beats Records, and have no plans of slowing down with a new album slated for 2020. Until then, Revo is making an official return to wax as the missing piece in many CSF vinyl collections.

The first official US vinyl pressing of Detroit Revolutions is available for a limited time for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019.

Genre:Hip Hop
Composed of members Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, Black Moon simultaneously kicked off and defined the rap renaissance of New York with the release of Enta Da Stage in 1993. Whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-filled rhymes to tear down the world's unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like Black Moon. Underground hip-hop might have been dominated by the sunny sound of G-Funk when Enta Da Stage dropped, but from then on the scene turned to the dark side. Black Moon was rising.

Earlier this year, Fat Beats Records presented the definitive Enta Da Stage box set, which was reissued for the first time across three formats (6xLP, 3xCD and 3xCassette). This album is the complete encapsulation of an era for anyone seeking to understand the origin and the essence of New York's Golden Age.The box set included vocals, instrumentals and remixes plus extensive liner notes by David Ma (Pitchfork, Wax Poetics) with rare and unreleased visual ephemera in an 18 page booklet. The story of Black Moon, alongside their peers Biggie, Big L, Nas, Kool G Rap, and Wu Tang, reminds us that the bleakest times produce the most profound agents of cultural change. And as we stand at the precipice of a new age of anxiety, Enta Da Stage has never been more relevant... or more necessary.

Although Black Moon would go on to release three more albums – and its members would go on to greatness with Da Beatminerz, Boot Camp Klik, and various solo projects – Enta Da Stage remains the perfect distillation of tight lyrical menace, rowdy crew hooks, stripped down breaks, and deep basslines on all of its fourteen tracks. Although Enta Da Stagemight stand in the shadow of East Coast albums such as Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Illmatic, Liquid Swords, Ready to Die, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx , and The Infamous , history will remember that Enta Da Stage preceded those releases. To understand Enta Da Stage is to understand the origin and the spirit of New York hip-hop once and for all.

CRIMEAPPLE's Viridi Panem is a deep dive into the complex dynamics of the eternal paper chase. "It's a conceptual piece about capitalism, greed and excess," says the charismatic heavy-bearded New Jersey-based MC, who adds that the album’s title translates from Latin into "Green Bread." The eight track project rolls out like a modern film noir starring a protagonist making connections with models in Medellín, splurging through fine dining scenarios, and navigating his way through a cast of aspirational characters lured into a clandestine contraband realm.

Viridi Panem builds on the buzz of this summer's Medallo album, which CRIMEAPPLE cut with Cypress Hill figurehead DJ Muggs. Before making moves with hip-hop legends and collaborating with modern scene leaders like the Griselda Records camp, CRIMEAPPLE announced his talent with a relentless freestyle on Statik Selektah's Shade45 radio show back in 2017. That move paved the way for a run of four breakthrough EPs—including the Halloween-inspired Sweet Dreams and the Street Fighter-themed Perfect franchise—all produced by CRIMEAPPLE's long-time cohort Buck Dudley, who also masterminds the complete sonic backdrop to latest sureshot Viridi Panem.

The dark and intoxicating world depicted on Viridi Panem is relayed by CRIMEAPPLE in captivating fashion. His intricate flows mix up vivid imagery with bursts of rapid-fire syllable spitting and splashes of Spanish slang that represent the MC's Colombian heritage. CRIMEAPPLE's graphic bars are matched by Buck Dudley's beats, which conjure a shadowy, danger-fraught atmosphere through the use of eerie wavering synths, echo-enhanced snares and growling bass tones. Bringing a touch of hip-hop history to the project, on "Entenmann's" and "Alium" CRIMEAPPLE interpolates vintage Bad Boy and Notorious B.I.G. lyrics, paying respect to a previous generation of paper chasers and letting the world know it's always been about the Benjamins.

Genre:Hip Hop
10 years after Blu and Exile released their magnum opus Below the Heavens, the California duo have reunited to release 14 tracks from the original 2007 sessions. In the Beginning: Before the Heavens contains previously heard songs and unreleased gems – the best of the best chosen from over 40 songs in the vault. Their third collaboration follows 2012’s Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, and is slated for an October release.
In The Beginning: Before the Heavens is made of up songs that are raw and untouched, keeping the authenticity of Blu and Exile’s creativity at the time. The album has guest appearances from familiar names like Dr. Oop, Donel Smokes, Aloe Blacc, and Blame One. While “Soul Provider,” “Another Day,” and “Party of Two” appeared on Blu’s Lifted EP, the majority of these songs showcase Blu rapping at his peak, maintaining his underground attitude as he dishes on reaching star status (“Constellations”), getting radio play (“On the Radio”), or opposing views in a problem-ridden world (“You’re Gonna Die Someday”). Exile, meanwhile, builds a golden hip-hop era feel with head-nodding samples and DJ scratches.
In addition to releasing In The Beginning: Before the Heavens for their fans, Blu and Exile are continuing their celebration of Below the Heavens with an anniversary tour. After such a huge turnout for the duo’s Below the Heavens anniversary show at the Regent Theatre in L.A. in July, they decided to take the live experience on the road with Dag Savage, Choosey, and Cashus King.

Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Hip Hop
Nearly four years and a number of solo projects later, Detroit’s Clear Soul Forces are back with their most impressive release to date. Still is what happens when four proven artists continue to hone their craft and find their collective flow. At 11 tracks deep, this album eschews trends and instead provides timeless, straight-up dope Hip-Hop.

Speaking on why Still sounds so organic and cohesively produced, group member Noveliss says, “Everyone’s growth has made the creative process easier.” He adds that CSF may have been a team before, but each member had to prove himself individually. “Now, we and the world know what’s up, and it’s all about bouncing off each other and being a unit on every song.”

That sense of true teamwork and partnership is heard and felt on each track, from the neck-snapping opening track “Blaow (feat. DJ Odilon)” through to album closer “Don’t Stop” that serves up a wild burner-to-banger beat-switch. Other instant highlights include “Hit Me Now,” which Noveless says features “all of the random things that describe CSF,” and L.A.Z.’s favorite track “They Shootin’,” which is also the album’s lead single.

Those tracks, and the majority of the album, were produced by rapper-producer Ilajide, who complements his CSF brothers with beats primed for verses bursting with clever bravado, video game references, and head-spinning wordplay. Still is golden era Boom bap for the modern age, and it’s delivered through a lens that’s wholly unique to CSF. It’s also one of integrity, because there’s no fluff or superficial window dressing here—simply some of the best hip-hop you’ll hear this year.

Give Thanks
Tape | 2019 | US | Original (Fat Beats)
12,99 €*
Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Hip Hop
Ohbliv has caught recent looks for his hugely prolific output, a fiery catalogue of 50 Bandcamp releases, celebrated collabs, and an entry on Fat Beats’ prestigious Baker’s Dozen series. Not a bad ascendant for someone who started in the late ‘90s emulating past masters through making pause-tapes.

“I’m 36. I grew up on Large Pro, Pete Rock, Preemo, Ced Gee, Paul C, Bomb Squad, especially the pause tape aesthetic. In my developmental stages, those are the main ones,” he says, before adding: “My parents are also a big inspiration. I feel like my dad was a real digger before it was even a thing. I’ve found records in his collection that I haven’t even found out in the field while I’m digging. I credit him for that.”

Richmond, Virginia isn’t particularly known for its booming music scene but Ohbliv (pronounced “Obliv,” short for Oblivion) has seen a steady rise in awareness of his hometown’s musical offerings. On his local scene, he says: “Everybody has his or her own style. There are pockets and different sounds. There’s the more street side of things, the more traditional hip-hop, the more progressive guys. There’s no one solid style, everyone’s doing their own thing, but everyone works together too.” 2018’s joint with another Richmond stalwart artist, Fly Anakin, produced Backyard Boogie and cemented this notion, showcasing a mature beatsmith who could thoughtfully lace Anakin’s colorful rhymes with dynamic boom-bap.

This year, Ohbliv reunites with Fat Beats with whom he’s always had a fruitful working relationship. “I would consider this a proper follow up to the second Baker’s Dozen release. I also have two tapes through Fat Beats, two Lewse Joints cassettes. But this is the first proper follow-up,” he says. With a lot of familial pride and years of experience behind this moment, the new album is fittingly titled, Give Thanks.

The project is a woozy pastiche of eclectic samples chopped to bits with the aid of an SP-4O4, PT01 turntable, and digi-recorder. While Ohbliv does use an MPC 2000 here and then, the 404-SX is his main weapon of choice. “I’ve just always end up within the Roland family,” he says.

The title cut is Dilla-esque in the best, most respectful and un-trite way those words possibly entail. “Give Thanks is me digging deeper into my style but stretching it a bit. Different sample sources and different quality of samples, like using vinyl-based originals, he says. “I was also able to learn and used different mixing techniques for an overall cleaner sound.”

Release:2018 / US – Original
Genre:Hip Hop
On 2007’s “Nostalgia,” a memorable track off Marco Polo’s album, Port Authority, chemistry between Polo and guest MC Masta Ace is easily heard and felt. What was a quick one-off collab was not only a reminder of Masta Ace’s timelessness, but it was also the impetus for a larger, more fleshed out concept between the Toronto beatsmith Polo and the legendary MC. The pair since formed a duo and the result is a powerfully evenhanded project, A Breukelen Story.

In 2018 we find hip-hop’s storied journeyman, Masta Ace, at the helm of another sharp, tightly wrought project. He’s traversed hip-hop’s ever-changing landscape for nearly three decades, navigating different eras while expanding his already extensive catalogue. From his formative work with the legendary Juice Crew, to a bombastically renowned stint with Delicious Vinyl, it’s hard to find a more humble master of ceremony than Ace—even harder is finding another figure whose work is equally embraced on both coasts, East and West, as well as abroad.

Despite amassing 7 solo albums, 5 collaborative projects and countless additional one-offs, Ace is still trying to show and prove, still moving the needle forward for himself, his fans, and his career. Says Ace: “My goal on A Breukelen Story was to do more lyrical stuff. I’ve done a lot of concept songs, and a lot of topical records, but I made a point to put a couple straight rhyming joints on here to remind dudes I can still do this.”

“I met Masta Ace for the first time while interning at Cutting Room studios in Manhattan,” says Marco Polo, longtime Canadian producer whose exploration of samples and boom-bap aesthetics certainly suite his moniker. “Ace came in for a session in the studio years and I introduced myself and gave him a beat CD.” While Polo was a young intern on the rise, he quickly worked the situation to his advantage, eventually producing for giants he grew up admiring— Kool G Rap, Large Professor, Scarface, Sean Price, Black Thought, Talib Kweli, to name a few.

Polo is not new to forming quality collabs with others in the art form, with notable stints on the aforementioned Port Authority as well as it’s follow up, PA2, and others like 2016’s work with young MC, A-F-R-O, fittingly titled A-F-R-O Polo. Yet out of Polo’s previous collaborative efforts, this one stands out and is a bit more special, according to Polo: “Ace does not like to write random songs, its usually conceptual and topical,” he says. “But we do have some straight spitting joints on A Breukelen Story which is what makes this album possibly the most diverse of all of my collaborative albums.”

The random meeting and a beat CD resultantly birthed A Breukelen Story, a collaborative release between the venerable veteran and an incredibly detailed and prolific producer. 14 tracks with pronounced guests (Pharoahe Monch on “The Fight Song” for example) all strewn together through Ace’s signature skits and interludes that frame the music and while telling the story of Polo manifesting his vision of being an NY transplant via Toronto while pursuing his dream of being a renowned record producer. Other guests range from younger MCs like Marlon Craft to spry OGs like Lil Fame (of M.O.P.), to Smif ‘n’ Wessun, to Styles P (of the Lox) Polo’s pastiche style boom-bap is the drum-driven centerpiece that perfectly couches Masta Ace’s thoughtful stanzas and vivid storytelling for this effusive Brooklyn narrative. – David Ma

We are presently in the post-Marcberg era of Rap. After Roc Marciano released his solo opus in Spring 2010, a new continuum began which gathered tremendous momentum in 2012 following the release of his Metal Clergy compatriot Ka’s “Grief Pedigree” and Roc’s amazingly concise sophomore effort Reloaded. Subsequently, a divergent path opened in modern Rap heavily influenced by the sonics, tone, and aesthetic of those three projects. Since then Roc Marciano has released a critically acclaimed producer album (Marci Beaucoup) bookended by the release of his project “The Pimpire Strikes Back” in multiple formats. In the years since this string of releases, a new crop of emcees and producers emerged heavily inspired and influenced by Roc’s oeuvre while many others’ careers have been left doing the running man in their wave…

With multiple modern Rap classics already under his Ferragamo belt, last year Roc Marciano liberated the first half of his two part project titled Rosebudd’s Revenge. If the initial offering showcased Marc re-establishing himself as the innovator of the present Rap wave then “RR2 - the Bitter Dose” will cement Roc Marciano’s status as its linchpin. From the opening bars of “Respected” to when “Power” finally fades out he fashions another top to bottom high end sonic experience that will be both envied and emulated for years to come while he administers a double dose of pimpin’.

Production on “RR2: The Bitter Dose” is handled by Roc Marciano in addition to Animoss (Arch Druids) (on “Bohemian Grove” & “Happy Endings”), Don Cee (Arch Druids) (on “C.V.S” & “Major League”) and Element) (on “Respected” & “67 Lobby”). Knowledge The Pirate appears on both “Bohemian Grove” and “Major League” while Action Bronson contributes a verse to “Corniche.” Whether it comes to hard bars, slick talk or hustler wisdom Roc Marciano is unmatched. The Bitter Dose is nothing more than an American master lecturing a captive audience. It’s a guidebook on how to manipulate the English language and convey ideas and concepts and visuals that will evoke a wide range of emotions in listeners. The wait is over. Thank God for Roc Marci.

This vinyl issue of “Enta Da Stage” features the classic original album on two vinyls.

Composed of members Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, Black Moon simultaneously kicked off and defined the rap renaissance of New York with the release of “Enta Da Stage” in 1993. Whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-filled rhymes to tear down the world’s unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like Black Moon. Underground hip-hop might have been dominated by the sunny sound of G-Funk when “Enta Da Stage” dropped, but from then on the scene turned to the dark side. Black Moon was rising.

Although Black Moon would go on to release three more albums – and its members would go on to greatness with Da Beatminerz, Boot Camp Klik, and various solo projects – “Enta Da Stage” remains the perfect distillation of tight lyrical menace, rowdy crew hooks, stripped down breaks, and deep basslines on all of its fourteen tracks. Although “Enta Da Stage” might stand in the shadow of East Coast albums such as “Enter the Wu-Tang” (36 Chambers), “Illmatic”, “Liquid Swords”, “Ready to Die”, “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx” and “The Infamous”, history will remember that “Enta da Stage” preceded those releases. To understand “Enta Da Stage” is to understand the origin and the spirit of New York hip-hop once and for all.

Brownout’s legendary status as a “Funk Powerhouse” (Stereogum) is a reputation well deserved. The band of musicians have an impressive resume performing with Prince (RIP), GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, Bernie Worrell (RIP), and accolades from Ozzy Osbourne for their Brownout Presents: Brown Sabbath project. The latter helped grab the attention of Fat Beats Records, who worked with the band to release the critically acclaimed Public Enemy instrumentals project Fear of A Brown Planet in 2018. The Austin 9-piece is back with their first full length album of original music in over 8 years. The album, aptly titled, Berlin Sessions (out March 6, 2020 on Fat Beats) was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and is the first with lead singer Alex Marrero, whom they originally collaborated with on their wildly successful Brown Sabbath records. Berlin Sessions finds the group merging a multitude of styles, from rock to psych and of course the Latin Funk and Breakbeat on which they have built their sixteen-year career and reputation as Austin's premier party-starters. NPR recently featured the band on their heralded “Tiny Desk Concert” series, performing songs off the new album. NPR described the diversity of the band, stating, “One of the things you need to know about this band is that they can change traditions or genres almost on a dime. The core members dip into soul, Latin funk, a form of Peruvian cumbia called chicha, and funk covers of both Black Sabbath and Public Enemy. What each configuration has in common is the almost telepathic bond the band has developed after 15 years of working stages across the country. As you can see on the video, it's so infectious that Prince once used them for a while as a back-up band.”

The 12th installment of Fat Beats’ celebrated instrumental series, featuring harpist, pianist, guitarist and producer Low Leaf.

"Not all creation is inspired. It is the Spirit of Life that gives breath to a chord, a texture, a space to explore. Pure inspiration is a direct translation from the cosmic symphony that our collective heart beats to. It is the essence of all that is true, whole, and free.
Being planted in the periphery of Los Angeles, I have witnessed the musical landscape’s ever-evolving terrain from a spiritual perspective. I’ve come to learn the gravity of music’s inherent healing quality through life experiences; the ones that have tilled the soil of my being, season after season.
By way of meditation and prayer / listening and speaking, we are capable of connecting to endless musical realms within. These are sounds that forever feel familiar, for they bring the spirit home; the return to peace and understanding.
My dream is to live as music to the best of my ability, so that the Spirit of Life may use my voice as an instrument for God’s glory.
create or die"

Twenty-eight years ago, pissed-off twelve-year-olds around the universe discovered a new planet, a Black Planet. Public Enemy’s aggressive, Benihana beats and incendiary lyrics instilled fear among parents and teachers everywhere, even in the border town of Laredo, Texas, home of the future founders of the Latin-Funk-Soul-Breaks super group, Brownout. The band’s sixth full-length album (out May 25th) Fear of a Brown Planet is a musical manifesto inspired by Public Enemy’s music and revolutionary spirit.

Chuck D., the Bomb Squad, Flava Flav and the rest of the P.E. posse couldn’t possibly have expected that their golden-era hip hop albums would sow the seeds for countless Public Enemy sleeper cells, one that would emerge nearly three decades later in Austin, Texas. Greg Gonzalez (bass) remembers a kid back in junior high hipped him to the fact that Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise” is built on James Brown samples, while a teenaged Beto Martinez (guitar) alternated between metal and hip-hop in his walk-man, and Adrian Quesada (guitar/keys) remembers falling in love with Public Enemy’s sound at an early age. “When I got into Hip hop, I was looking for this aggressive outlet . . . and I didn’t even understand what they were pissed off about, because I was twelve and lived in Laredo . . . but I loved it and I felt angry along with them.”

Joseph Abajian (Fat Beats’ owner) must have sensed the deep hip-hop well lying beneath the versatile band’s Latin-Funk veneer. “I thought their sound would work covering Public Enemy songs,” Abajian says, and, “it was good to know they were P.E. fans . . . We came up with a track listing and they went to work.” Despite the band’s eagerness to work on new original material (an album of original songs is slated for next year), they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pay homage to this iconic and influential posse.

Translating sample-based music to a live band turned out to be more of a challenge than they anticipated. Adrian tried to get inside the Bomb Squad’s [Public Enemy’s producers/beat-making team] head in order to find the inspiration to reinterpret P.E.’s songs: “imagine the Bomb Squad going back in time and getting the J.B.s [James Brown’s funky backing band] in the studio and setting up a couple analog synths and then playing those songs.” While some songs closely follow the original musical blueprint, others use the source breakbeats as jumping-off points later sweetened by Trombonist Mark “Speedy” Gonzales’ horn arrangements, synth wizardry courtesy of friend-of-the-band Peter Stopschinski, and DJ Trackstar’s turntable scratches. But don’t listen expecting to hear paint-by-numbers recreations of classic Public Enemy jams. “Our approach is never in the tribute sense,” Adrian explains. “We’ve always taken it and made it our own, whether it’s the Brown Sabbath thing or this Public Enemy thing.”

Coming off numerous tours as Brown Sabbath and even a stint backing the late legend Prince, Brownout is arguably the tightest and funkiest band on the road today and they’re psyched to bring this revolutionary music to the people. For a band without an overt political agenda, they collectively couldn’t resist the opportunity to play this music live, especially now. “If there’s any way that we can use the already political and protest nature [of P.E.’s music], we would like to try,” Beto says. “The album’s title, Fear of Brown Planet is definitely a relevant idea today and we’re not afraid to put it out there, because we want to speak out.” By reinterpreting these hip hop classics in their unique style and channeling the spirit of Public Enemy that first echoed around the world and captured their imaginations all those years ago, Brownout is doing exactly that.

For Ro Spit and 14KT, they’ve built a small empire on their own as solo artists. Ro Spit has amassed a career spanning across 3 albums, 2 mixtapes, and countless of features including Royce Da 5’9”, Denaun Porter, Bun B, Freeway and Raheem DeVaughn just to name a few. Not to mention a reality TV show centered around his world famous brand Burn Rubber that was produced by Eminem. The production arm of RSXGLD, 14KT, is 8 albums deep into his career. KT has paired with some of the best in the game, having worked with a who’s who of today’s artists such as Roc Marciano, Danny Brown, Black Milk, Bun B, eLZhi, Oddisee, Skyzoo, Jay Electronica, and even a collaboration album with his fellow Ann Arbor compadré Mayer Hawthorne as they formed the duo Jaded Inc.

Nothing, however, in their respective discographies has sounded more organic and masterful than the combination of Ro and KT. “Every project that I’ve done he’s been a part of,” says Ro. “To be honest, he’s my favorite producer.” The chemistry they’ve been able to develop over the years is evident throughout Ro’s discography on tracks like “Leave Me Alone” taken from Octane & iLLite’s The Forgotten... Chosen and the Freeway featured “Forefeit” from Ro’s Glass Ceiling Project.

It’s only right that the two have taken their time to create an organic piece of work unlike anything they’ve done before, set to debut this Fall on Fat Beats Records. “Leading up to this, my whole career, I intentionally didn’t show vulnerability. I didn’t want people to know about me,” Ro exclaims. RSXGLD is the lyrical maturation of Ro Spit while this group pushed 14KT to new creative levels sonically. “I’ve used Maschine for 3 years but I haven’t really come out with any projects making beats in this way. It was a totally new process for me,” KT notates. “Sonically, I’ve created in a way that I’ve never created before. It’s all different and out of my comfort zone.”

This is a true, social experiment. This is music made from the soul that encompasses every aspect of the human experience. This is how you push beyond your limits.

This is RSXGLD.

It’s been four years since La Coka Nostra released their sophomore album, “Masters Of The Dark Arts”, (the group's first project without Everlast was also their most critically acclaimed project featured collaborations with Vinnie Paz, Sean Price & production from DJ Premier and Statik Selektah) and the music industry has changed considerably in that time. Always known for tackling controversial topic matter, the group’s new album, “To Thine Own Self Be True”, finds them once again in torch bearing mode, addressing subjects that most artists shy away from. “This album was created during a time of unique and individual transformation for each member of the group” Ill Bill stated. “Speaking for myself, it’s been a heavy last couple of years. It’s definitely the most personal record we’ve made under the La Coka banner and while we’re still making music that’s hard as fuck, there’s a maturity to this latest batch of songs that makes it different from a lot of the older stuff. I notice the biggest reactions come from the songs our listeners can personally relate to and we needed to make a record like this right now, not only for the fans, but for ourselves. I got a lot off my chest on this one. Making music can be extremely therapeutic and making “To Thine Own Self Be True” was a rebirth and a re-ignition for me.”
While DJ Lethal continues to oversee the production end of “To Thine Own Self Be True”, the group also enlisted Statik Selektah, Marco Polo, Salam Wreck (D-12, Obie Trice, Proof, B-Real, Tha Dogg Pound) & ChumZilla (from the Demigodz) and get vocal contributions from extended family members such as Vinnie Paz, Apathy, Q-Unique, Sick Jacken, SKAM2 & Rite Hook.
