In 2016, Folklore Tapes researchers Ian Humberstone & Jordan Ogg left Edinburgh to discover Isle Maree. It's small & seldom visited, but has played host to a remarkable array of rites & wonders. Its shores remember Druid sacrifices, Saintly deeds and solemn funeral processions. Its soil holds Viking graves, a wish tree studded with ancient coins, & the vanishing traces of an enchanted well. Sacred Island delves into these mysteries, making use of little-known Victorian sources & contemporary interviews to unfurl the isle’s tangled history.

Folklore is most often associated with the romance of rural life, but this new series of releases explores ‘industrial folklore’. Instruments of Industry is a translation of a residency and exhibition by Hannah Leighton-Boyce from 2016. The project approaches the tool as an extension of ourselves; our contact, relationship to and being in the world. This first release through Industrial Folklore Tapes features the original exhibition recording, it features each tool spoken and then played in turn.

Rituals and Practices was originally released on cassette in Autumn, 2012 and features a grimoire of sonic spells exploring symbolic customs and activities from the county of Devon. Paper Dollhouse responds to the general idea and definition of the term ritual, by conducting a ceremony in the rural landscape within a circle of trees and stone. Magpahi weaves together a rich tapestry encompassing six different forms of ritual from the West Country, largely informed by the work of the late folklorist Theo Brown. Alison presents a sonic vitrine of tales and customs.
