Release:2012 / US – Reissue
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Pal Joey is one of NYC’s true sample-based music production legends. He has produced a diverse assortment of hits for artists such as Boogie Down Productions, Dee-Lite and The Orb. This unprecedented 7-inch single has assembled two of his best-known solo efforts: "Hot Music" the Hip Hop/House crossover banger and "Dance" the groundbreaking House classic together as they were originally released in 1989. These timeless tracks show no signs of aging from their late '80s origin, both are still in heavy rotation with club DJs today. This never before seen on a 7-inch pressing is a limited and fully licensed Fraternity Edition. This release is both a collector's item and a serious weapon on the dance floor.

True school heads already know the deal! One of the all-time classic, original break beats, “Shangri La” is a must for any crate. The mysterious La Pregunta came out with this double A-side single in 1978 and it immediately was in rotation for all dance floors — from disco heads to b-boy circles. “Paradise is very nice!” is the familiar catch-phrase that follows the instantly recognizable, uptempo drum break, and paradise is where DJs will be with doubles of this very cut-able small-hole 7-inch. Following the layout of an alternate pressing of the original 12-inch, the Fraternity Music Group’s from-the-masters reissue has the lesser-known “saxophone mix” as the flip side, but for the first time, a tape speed alteration from the original has been fixed, leaving both sides at the same tempo as they were first recorded. Perfect replica labels and a high-quality 33 RPM pressing round out the package of this essential ultimate break. Real DJs Have Doubles!

Genre:Hip Hop
Another 7-inch sure shot straight from the heart of the golden era of hip hop, this double-sided killer dips deep into the heavy catalog of Super Lover Cee and Casanova Rud for an essential addition to any funky DJ’s crates. “I’m Back,” the album opener from the duo’s debut, has never appeared on a 7-inch single before. Supe and Rud trade high-powered verses that backslap all imitators — As Super Lover Cee says, “respect your elders, shorty!” The flip, “Girls I Got ‘Em Locked,” was engineered for extra large sound by all-time great Paul C and kicks things off with the iconic “One Two Ah Pump It Up” vocal intro that makes doubles mandatory, if you didn’t know already!

Another sure shot reissue by The Undercover Brother released on the Mobile Mondays label. This high-quality single is super limited and won’t be repressed…

Nubian Crackers member The Undercover Brother (AKA veteran Queens, New York-based beat-maker Victor Piagneri) fires up his U.B.'s project and delivers another taster for the forthcoming "Ultimate Covers w/Breaks" LP. On the A-side you'll find his instrumental interpretation of Frederick Knight cut "Uphill Peace Of Mind", a heavy, stripped-back revision rich in killer drum breaks, Red Hot Chili Peppers style funk-rock guitars and life-affirming piano solos. Turn to the flip for Piagneri's vocal-free version of The Honey Drippers' 1973 anti-Nixon anthem "Impeach The President". He allows the track's much-sampled opening drum break a little more room to breathe, before carefully layering up Hammond organ riffs and a snaking saxophone solo that effectively replaces the original vocals.

Nearly 40 years after releasing two of the greatest funk 7-inches of all time, the breakbeat masterpieces "Space Funk" and "Midnight Theme," the legendary Manzel is back on Fraternity Records with another sureshot double-sider. Originally comprised of Manzel Bush on keys, Larry VanDyke on guitar and late Steve Garner on drums, the 2017 incarnation of the group adds powerhouse Jay Mumford, p.k.a. J-Zone, in the drum chair and is lean and funky as ever. "High And Tight" is a classic party jam, complete with chanted vocals and a couple drum breaks that establish the new man in the trio is no joke on the skins. "Standing On Mars" continues the favored space-related vibe of Manzel's past releases, an uptempo jazzy instrumental dancefloor mover that simply cooks, with Manzel doing double duty on electric piano and organ.

In name, The Zone Identity sounds like a long forgotten band comprised of college students from the age of psychedelia that released one obscure 45 that lives on with a mortgage-busting price tag. It’s about 50 years too late for a story that cool – The Zone Identity is just the latest musical endeavor from producer, drummer, DJ, writer, multi-instrumentalist, (occasional) MC and music industry outsider, J-Zone.

After the unexpected cult success of The Du-Rites, J-Zone’s 2016 funk offering with guitarist Pablo Martin, the New York native follows with a different take on the funk for the inaugural offering of The Zone Identity. Working with a wide array of different musicians with different backgrounds for The Zone Identity makes for a more funk-jazz-inspired and solo driven take on J-Zone’s trademark drums and production. This debut 7” features jazz guitarist Ed Littman and Hammond B-3 organist Bennett Paster from Fraternity Music Group house band, The U.B.'s, as well as J-Zone’s go-to percussionist, Ray May, on congas. Littman and J-Zone split the bass playing duties. An avid funk 45 collector, J-Zone uses both sides of the release to pay homage to his musical heroes and favorite records with a spin on two of his favorite tunes. While the A-Side re-works “Funk-I-Tus,” an obscure late ‘60s offering from L.A.-based Warm Excursion, the b-side will be more familiar with its nod to “Let The Music Take Your Mind,” an early hit for J-Zone’s favorite band, Kool and the Gang. The original story is more exciting, but the reality is easier to believe. It’s also cheaper.

In 1973 a little-known record was released that defined the sound of Hip Hop drums. “Synthetic Substitution” is universally acknowledged to be THE source for boom-bap kicks and snares, having been used in hundreds of songs by every big name producer to ever touch a sampler. Now, for the first time, an alternate version of this landmark cut has surfaced. This is no sloppy, bar band cover made for a quick buck – The U.B.’S (a shadowy group of serious session cats, put together by Yeahman & Victor “The Undercover Brother” Piagneri) have crafted a meticulous rework that honors not only the signature drum intro but also, the moody melodic heart of this most soulful classic. Side one of this 45-only release features a Wes Montgomery-esque guitar taking the lead role, while the flip showcases the tough, tight instrumental backing. Essential, stop-you-in-your-tracks material for all beat heads and a real keeper for the soul heads.

This 7″ release includes both the vocal and instrumental versions of course with the infamous heavy drum break opening perfect for rocking doubles.

The Fenoms return to burn on Fraternity with a pair of hard-edged, break-heavy instrumental jams. "Shakem" on the A-side marries a classic b-boy get-down drum and bass groove with an exotic horn line that touches on vintage Ethiopian funk. Throw in some bongos and wah-wah guitar and you've got a dancefloor sureshot. "Mile 187" on the flip goes hard as well, with a fuzz guitar riff that adds a psych feel to the proceedings. An eerie synth lead sneaks in like a nastier Funky Worm, all leading to another crushing drum break. Another killer double-sider from Fraternity Music Group and the funky Fenoms!
