Over the last five years and as many volumes of their “Beach Diggin’” compilations, Guts and Mambo have explored the reefs of five continents, dredged the sea beds of countless seas and oceans, examined every single seashell with the aim of making sure that no vinyl pearl should escape their notice.Tunisian reggae, Japanese disco, West Indian jazz-funk, the duo’s aesthetic dribbling skills would stop the savviest Brazilian football player dead in his tracks, and it was with this in mind, that they proceeded to select their discoveries. With a marked preference for meditative free-diving rather than tour package scuba diving, and isolated spots rather than massively overdeveloped beach fronts. For this latest installment of their adventures, Guts and Mambo have organized another expedition around the world, to salute the spots where for the last five years they have uncovered rare specimens, saving some of them from total extinction, while shining a light on others that amply deserved it.Though each “Beach Diggin’” compilation can be listened to independently of the others, the five together now form a kind of navigational chart signaling with its green flags the places where, in Africa, Europe, Asia, America, and the South Pacific, they gamboled on sandy beaches, avoiding the well-trodden path, becoming more and more demanding with each passing year. Beach diggin’ is a state of mind...The fifth and last volume of this well and successful series comes with a deluxe packaging as usual.

Arkansas native, Lee Moore moved to Memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in New York, L.A and everywhere in between. As a singer and songwriter Lee Moore spent the 1980s collaborating in Memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like Volt and Stax Records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. Lee Moore unfortunately never got close to reach his goals of fame and fortune. For the first time, Past Due Records is reissuing Lee’s incredible “Free & Easy” LP which was only released as a handful of test pressings in 1981 because Lee thought the record was too good to release on his Score Records label. It is a pure Memphis modern soul / boogie funk masterpiece that features countless artists from the Stax crew, Al Green’s vocalists and even Herbie Hancock’s keyboard player. The 1981 test pressing has commanded huge sums of money on the used vinyl market and is one for the real Soul connoisseur.

The perfect soundtrack to chill on the beach! It’s the season of the juiciest, sweetest fruit, of shorts, tank tops and thongs, the time of year when you look at life through a dark pair of sunglasses. Summer is also the time of year when lovers of soul, disco, funk, bossa, jazz and other similar grooves get together to enjoy the sunny vibrations sampled by Guts and Mambo from the world over. Since 2013, this duo has trademarked and branded its acoustic discoveries with the appellation Beach Diggin’, a label that certifies the quality and rarity of its products and guarantees a maximum dose of sunshine for every groove. Braving the hordes of sugar-hungry bees swarming around boxes of Caribbean records, the humidity in the holds of boats, or jostling to save 45’s lying on the ground from being trampled underfoot, Guts and Mambo, at the risk of their own lives, have explored the most far-flung corners of the earth, all for a single purpose: To discover and to share.Because in the end, the geographic origin matters little. Even if the golden triangle of Brazil, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago remains the largest supplier, Beach Diggin’ is above all a way of being, a way of living the moment and life in general to the fullest. Permanent coolitude on the BPM, fast or slow, an epicureanism that is equally at ease whether its produced with a sense of Amazonian luxuriousness or the sparse comfort of a deserted beach, a reserve of a few degrees of heat to put on the turntable when it gets cold outside. So, it’s not surprising that tracks from Eastern Europe, North Africa, or the US have quickly received their stamp of approval. In this third compilation, just as in the previous two, the rule remains: Beach Diggin’ is a state of mind...

For decades the mysterious Hiroshi & Claudia LP has been an elusive jewel amongst the curious world of Australian private press LPs. With nothing more than cryptic broken-English album sleeve notes to reference, the mythical Six To Six LP is a bewildering and intriguing jazz oddity. With prices of the rare original record hitting three figures, collectors began demanding to know who was ‘Hiroshi’, who was ‘Claudia’ and why did a group of unknown Japanese musicians record an album in Australia in the late 1970s only to issue it in micro-quantities, then seemingly disappear back into obscurity. For years no trace of whom they were nor any clue as to the origins of their peculiar yet entrancing music had surfaced. Until now….Welcome to the brainchild of Gilles Germain and Carmen Fabro, a French/Italian husband and wife team of restaurateurs and film producers operating in Sydney during the 1970s. Establishing the custom record label ‘Atom’, the duo released a handful of highly obscure vanity jazz LPs and promotional horse racing 45s. (Yes it’s all very strange…) The highlight undoubtedly being the album Six To Six, a session recorded in Sydney in 1979 by a group of touring Japanese jazz musicians led by guitarist Hiroshi Yasukawa, and a forgotten and still undocumented Mauritian cabaret singer performing under the alias ‘Claudia’. Sitting somewhere between spacey Balearic disco, haunting soul and hectic funk reminiscent of electric Miles Davis, the Six To Six LP is a curious beast to say the least. Released specially for Record Store Day 2017 Northside Records and The Roundtable present a limited edition exact reissue of this legendary Australian rare groove LP.

The Willie Dale 45 was discovered about 7 years ago. A good friend on the scene in Manchester won the first copy from ebay after which a few of us chased up the seller getting some of the (roughly) 5 or copies of the record ever to surface. What was a $500 record when it was unknown is now a $4000 after the Neo and Northern Soul scenes got hold of it. But less about the history what about the record, I could not fit this into any one genre; it is funk, soul, psyche and garage and rolled into one and one of the best discoveries in the last 15 years. Beyond essential.

Producers, sound engineers and studio musicians collaborated closely with flamenco / rumba singers and bands. Among others, we got to highlight the production / studio work that genius Josep Llobell did for the Belter label in Barcelona. Here you got 12 disco-rumba-flamenco-boogie bombs, a time machine to the boites and discotheques of the late 70s and the perfect soundtrack to an imaginary “Kinki” cinema soundtrack.Featuring: Sangre Gitana, Rumba 3, Tobago, Los Gachós, La Marelu, El Turronero…

The title track of this album has been sampled by Cypress Hill, DJ Shadow, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, 2 Live Crew, and even Kriss Kross, just to name a few.Few funk groups have had as far-reaching an influence as New Orleans band The Meters, the project of keyboardist/vocalist Art Neville, and the famed house band of Allen Tousaint. During their mid-60s-to-late-70s heyday they released a heavy mixture of instrumental and vocal albums and singles of Louisiana-inflected soul, R&B, and funk music that continues to inspire and marvel, and get covered by groups and artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jaco Pastorius, Widespread Panic, and even The Grateful Dead. In 1969, The Meters released “Look-Ka Py Py”, which would cement their reputation in New Orleans music history as one of the greatest. Produced by Allen Toussaint himself, “Look-Ka Py Py” featured Art Neville and his sinuous keys leading the four-piece of George Porter Jr. on bass, Ziggy Modeliste on drums, and Leo Nocentelli on guitar 12 instrumental numbers of world-class funk, dripping with style and precision. Acclaimed to this day as a classic of the genre, The Rolling Stone gave the album a spot on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time, while songs from “Look-Ka Py Py” found new life decades after its release as a treasure trove of hip-hop sampling.

Hutson, long revered on the soul scene for his production, songwriting and performance skills, was Curtis Mayfield’s heir apparent chosen by the great man, to replace him in the Impressions, and then groomed for an extensive solo career on Curtis own label, Curtom. The Hutson catalogue has not been available on any format for nearly two decades. This is the first release of many as the label will be working with Leroy and his team to create the definitive sounding masters, and unearthing lost gems from his extensive archive. This is a double sided limited edition 45 containing two previously unreleased Hutson gems. The A-‐side is a previously unreleased 1977 recording, which is making its debut on this single. Having released tracks with Mr. Lif, Lyrics Born, Edan, P.E.A.C.E (Freestyle Fellowship), Rammellzee (RIP) & Shockdell (which Tricky sampled for his 2014 released song "Lonnie Listen"), Whitefield is no stranger to working with MC´s.On "What Remains" he teams up with Phluid, who let´s loose about our world going down over raw fuzzy live beats. "Leaving This Planet" originally released in 1974A heavily-played classic at David Mancuso's Loft parties, Charles Earland's "Leaving This Planet" encapsulates the visionary appropriation of the early NYC disco scene: an uptempo funky Jazz masterpiece that spoke to the precise moment of divine convergence that was NYC's underground dance community, and in so doing, secured it's place in the annals of musical and cultural immortality far beyond it's originally intended role. "Leaving This Planet" explicates both lyrically & musically, verbally and viscerally the basic platform of early club culture: a veritable antithetic to organized political action, and yet deeply political in it's own (possibly unconscious) right. A longing not just for immediate and total escape from the physical and spiritual plight of modern American urban poverty, but, in fact, an actually cohesive, organized and structured fraternity that applied a philosophy formulated from direct experience under the hardships of alienated material existence to the latter's objective stranglehold on passion, expression and cultural mobility, establishing a politics of the everyday that was practiced with tenacity and resolved, determined to abolish banal drudgery in favor of a new utopian vision: theoretical architecture constructed on top of the cold, estranging urban landscape of American inner-city plight. The early pioneers of NYC's underground have demonstrated for us continually through their example & legacy (which we should always reinvent & re-theorize for our own needs, of course) that to truly escape the hardships of this world requires an uncompromising exploitation of it's most base material simplicities, their direct reconstruction and re-appropriation, not for the continued service of the superstructures of economic and social division, but for the purposes of human need, human passion, human necessity: in service of LIFE.Compiled by Francis Englehardt & Paul Nickerson for slow/to\speak, featuring an exclusive B-Side by anti-philosopher DG9...there are no leaders...

Earlier in 2017 Everland Jazz presented a reissue of Danser's Inferno's - Creation One, originally released in 1973. Now we present the even more obscure release The Danser Revolution by The John Danser Octet, almost impossible to find in original format. The ultra rare funky jazz LP from 1977 contains the killer funky fusion tune "Cool" known for being sampled by Gangstarr, Blackalicious and J.Dilla. At age 14, John Danser emigrated from London and established himself in New York City where he earned a master's degree in music at the Manhattan school of music. In his early years, Danser played in classical as well as jazz gigs, simultaneously arranging and composing. In the 1970’s, composer and multi-instrumentalist John Danser formed Danser’s Inferno, a funky Jazz-Rock-Fusion band, an ensemble of 14 very talented musicians. The John Danser Octet most probably contains the core of that same ensemble but the groups’s single album is so rare that little is known about it’s exact origins. So, just let the great music speak for itself. Licensed from Jessica Danser.

During the late 70’s and onwards leading Wigan Casino DJ Richard Searling had begun to move away from the more traditional four beats to the bar sound 60’s and was programming more soulful seventies, new and recent releases into his DJ set’s. One of the many records he championed was the b-side to a very obscure local Philly 45 release by the then unknown all male group, The Nu-Rons. Richard had obtained this elusive 45 from record dealer John Anderson on one of his many buying trips to John’s famous Soul Bowl emporium in Kings Lynn. At the time Richard Searling was not only famous for the constant stream of new 45 discoveries he was continually playing but also for the ingenious cover-up names he bestowed upon them. In this particular case The Nu-Rons began their life within the UK northern soul scene under the cover-up name of ‘Lamar Thomas & The Chains That Bind’ under the title of “All Of My Life (Spent Waiting For You)”. Such was the volume of new finds in that period that even the most popular records were subsequently dropped in favour of the next discovery. Following The Nu-Rons 45’s fall from grace on the wheels of steel, avid soul collectors would continue their search for this elusive 45. That was until following the birth of the genre later described as the ‘Crossover’ sound. The Nu-Rons soulful harmonies fitted the bill perfectly and with more copies now being in the hands of more DJ’s and collectors alike The Nu-Rons “All My Life” would in all probability reach the full height of it’s popularity and demand.During 1975 the Nu-Ron’s entered the Sound Room studio in Upper Darby P. A. to record two more Campbell and Bowen songs, “Disco Hustle” and “Can’t Do Enough Girl”. “Disco Hustle” (Stage-Art 1001) was a new song prevalent to the shift towards the disco boom in Philly. While the b-side “Can’t Do Enough Girl” was a sweet soul ballad previously recorded during a demo session in 1971. The Nu-Ron’s “All Of My Life” faired reasonably well locally in Philly although it would be through the record later finding its way to England and into the hands of first Northern Soul and later Crossover DJ’s that the 45 would achieve its greatest notoriety. While in recent years with the shift to a more funk orientated sound, their song Disco Hustle recorded under the artist name of ‘The Nu-Rons & Co has too grown in demand. Here before you now is the Nu-Ron’s two most in demand sides back to back for your delectation. The Nu-Ron’s are still working and recording today although as a group of three, with Raymond Gibson having sadly passed away.

Instrumental versions of Gabriel’s Stones Throw Records debut Jardín now available on limited edition wax. Gabriel Garzón-Montano’s formidable skills have come to fruition on Jardín in his Stones Throw debut. “This album came out of wanting to make music that reminds people how beautiful life is and how delicate their heart is,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to make music that is healing, comforting, and funky. I named the album Jardín hoping for it to create a space for healing when people put it on. “A garden is full of life, growth and beauty,” Gabriel said of choosing that unifying image as the title for his new album. “It makes me think of green and white and all the colors as they appear in different flowers.” That vivid spectrum bursts forth on Jardín itself and the album contains references to fruit of all sorts, sour mango, juicy tangerines and sweet peaches. From the heartache and aching vocals that float over the dusty drums of “Crawl” to the stutter-step thump of “Bombo Fabrika” to the high falsetto he nails on “Octave,” Garzón-Montano proves himself to already be one of 2017’s biggest breakout talents.

Formed in Queens, NY in the early 1960s, The Exciters were a dynamic R&B quartet consisting of lead singer Brenda Reid and her producer/writer husband Herb Rooney, plus vocalists Carolyn Johnson and Lillian Walker. The group rose to prominence in 1962, when their hit single “Tell Him” rose to #4 on the U.S. pop chart. The Exciters continued releasing quality music for years, including their 1969 RCA album Caviar And Chitlins, a vintage slice of soul / R&B from perhaps the most important era in the genre’s history. Incidentally, a few years later the album’s producer Herb Rooney would go on to produce and write one of hip-hop’s most sampled records ever, “Synthetic Substitution” by Melvin Bliss. Long out-of print, Caviar And Chitlins is now available on vinyl for the frst time in decades. Discover it now thanks to this official reissue from Nature Sounds.

A deep mystery surrounds the movie “Nell’anno della Luna” (In the year of the Moon) and its soundtrack, which was released one year later. A beautiful work that lingers in between swing and melodies, in a fad that was popular a few decades earlier, complemented by some elements of novelty borrowed from beat and rock. The title track, “Alla brasiliana” and “Samba Querida” sound more traditional, while titles like “Afro Swing”, “Underground”, “Beatmania” (all featuring the vocal ensemble I 4+4, led by Nora Orlandi) represent a more adventurous side of this soundtrack.

In the early seventies, Hank Swarn and Shirley Nanette came together to create Never Coming Back. Swarn had been on the road for five years, lending his guitar-backing talent to Earl Grant and his band. Swarn brought his material to the sessions, and with the support of some talented local musicians, the album was recorded in a little over a week.

Here's a revamped reissue of an extremely rare Italian library album from 1970. Arawak is one of the many pseudonyms that Luciano Simoncini used as a composer of film scores and background music for radio and television in Italy. This album stayed under the radar until hip-hop performer Quasimoto (an alter ego of producer Madlib) sampled 'Accade A Harlem' for the 'Suono Libero' series. The laid-back grooves and dreamy atmospheres alternate with more funky sounds to make for a truly unique listening experience.

Luv N’Haight is proud to re-issue Sweet Maya’s self-titled album. A midwest jazz-funk classic with elements of folk, jazz, soul, funk and rock combining to create a heady blend reminiscent of ‘70s work by French band Cortex and songwriting maestro Terry Callier. The music of Sweet Maya is an extension of each member. As individuals they bring together diverse backgrounds, as a group they blend it all into a sound that is exciting and full of warmth. The six-piece group of multi-talented instrumentalists has five lead singers, four songwriters and four arrangers. The music that grows from the contact of such persons is evidenced in this album. It is Sweet Maya (the Illusion) that flows through and shapes the many idioms of their music. It is Rob Hayes, Tom Davis, Janice Lakers, John Chamberlin, and Mark Bowen who convey the experience. Womack returned to American in 1969 to cut My Prescription, also produced by Moman, at a time that the venue was becoming exceptionally hot with visits from the likes of Elvis, Dusty Springfield, Neil Diamond and others. Womack's sophomore album may however well be one of the most demonstrative showcases of studio and session crew, incandescent on a finely-honed program of classy and soulful performances, with the singer in full control. Tracks like 'How I Miss You Baby,' 'Arkansas State Prison' and 'I Can't Take It Like A Man' stand as some of Womack's greatest moments, and taken as a whole, My Prescription stands not only the man's first truly great solo album, but also a timeless slice of sophisticated southern soul-making.

Limited to 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl!Italian Prog. holy grail and one of the most prized records of the genre. Impossible to find in its original edition (also a repress from 1989 exists), this album remains a fleeting appeareance of Italian discography and fair object of desire in the record collectors circle, maybe appearing 3 or 4 times in the last 20 years. Musically influenced by Symphonic Rock legends of the period like Emerson Lake And Palmer and Italian Top Prog. bands like Le Orme, features a stunning Progressive suite on the first side followed by a more commercial Pop-Rock vibes on side B. Released in 1972 on the small Library label CGO with faint distribution and signed by Italian Library players and session men of the time like Walter Rizzati. Screaming organ, whriling drums / percussions / sounds and overflowing bassline. Italian Progressive-Pop legendary album!

When Numero wrapped the track list of 2009’s Local Customs: Downriver Revival, we knew there was a smaller second record buried in the mountains of tape rescued from Felton Williams’ Ecorse, Michigan basement. As the Revival label’s lone “star,” Shirley Ann Lee was afforded dozens of opportunities to record, but only six sides managed to trickle out on 45 between 1967- 1969. Frustrated with a lack of even minor success, Shirley ceased recording altogether in the early 1970s. Using Revival’s aborted “Shirley Ann Lee Radio Hour” program as our guide, we’ve taken the best of her proper studio recordings, in the moment sketches, out of tune piano demos, and rehearsals with young kids talking in the background and created the Shirley Ann Lee album that never was.

Get On Down proudly presents another top-notch vinyl reissue, from their long-running series of collaborations with James Brown's famed 70s funk label People Records. As the 1970s wore on, the classic funk sounds that had defined James Brown's backing band, The J.B.'s, gave way to the rise of disco music. Fred Wesley and his collective of musicians couldn't resist the chance to make their mark, releasing Hustle With Speed in 1975, with Charles Bobbit and Don Love producing, and the godfather himself, James Brown co-writing and providing arrangements. Hustle With Speed didn't cross over like the band had hoped it would, but it was nonetheless remarkable album, featuring The J.B.'s signature funky style married with disco to exciting effect. All the while there's still plenty to be had for the funk die-hard, fromthe brass blow-out jam "Here We Come, Here We Go, Here We Are", to the trombone-heavy "All Aboard The Funky Soul Train", to the powerhouse opening salvo that is "(It's Not The Express) It's The JBs Monaurail".Songs from Hustle With Speed would take on lives of their own decades after the album's release, through sampled appearances in tracks by Jay-Z, Nas, Eric B. & Rakim, Ultramagnetic MCs, EPMD, and many more.

Baad John Cross’s New Revolution is a Afro-electro-funk-boogie-disco banger that could only come from 1980s Nigeria. Bright, optimistic, with an unrelenting eye on the dance floor, it is regarded by many as a prototype of the electro rhythms that would become the signature sound of Nigerian boogie. A Cameroonian by birth, Cross arrived in Lagos a cheeky smile, a pair of white dungarees and a bag full of songs. After proving his chops with uncredited session work, he signed with the legendary Coconut label, hooked up with producer Modjo Isidore and created a stone cold boogie classic in New Revolution. ’Gimme Some Lovin’ and ‘Get Up And Dance Salsa’ (briefly a dance craze in Lagos, apparently) are dance floor classics, ‘Jeanie My Love’ the obligatory love ballad and ‘We Need Freedom’ a Marleyesque call for peace across the continent. The real surprise is ‘Rock n Roll Birthday’, a rockabilly number straight out of 80’s London. (The cover photo has a similar vibe.) Sadly, New Revolution was to be Baad John Cross’s only album. He was soon back in Cameroon, eking out a career as a session musician, but not before creating one of the freshest Nigerian boogie albums ever made. - Peter Moore

Big Crown Records is proud to present a recording that could have easily been lost forever like so many others from it’s era. Taken from the only known copy of this acetate that appears to be a rehearsal recording for the group to solicit local gigs, these stripped down versions of “Get Hip To Yourself” and “Every Time I See a Pretty Girl” are American relics. The only information about the acetate is handwritten on a piece of masking tape affixed to the A side, the name of the group, The Fabulous Dynamics, and the track listing. Of the 6 songs on the demo, we pulled the 2 most buttery, delectable, sweet & savory slices of mid 60’s group soul. Stripped down to vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar, both sides of this 7 capture the lo-fi, intimate sonic landscape of yesteryear, something that is often emulated, but never quite duplicated. Another pretty cool detail about this acetate, it was found in the personal record collection of Lamont Dozier.

The A side “I Explained It All” is an early Paul & The Tall Trees recording done in between recording sessions for Our Love In The Light. A haunting number equal parts floaty vocal and crushing drums co-produced by Paul & Leon Michels. From Paul on the session: “The new year approaching. Saturday we’d have a P&TTT family get together. Write music. It was dark and damp down there. Smokey. Windows the size of shoe boxes. The old 64 Rocket was hot. Pop bought a Rickenbacker.” The B side “Watch Out” is actually the tune that started the whole thing between Big Crown and 79.5. Years ago Kate Mattison who was then performing as Mattison came to Soul Fire studios to record some of her demos, this is how her music got on our radar. Some years after that Danny Akalepse picked up the “Watch Out” 45 she had pressed independently in a record shop and fell in love with the tune. When we started Big Crown she was one of the first people we called up to see what she was up to. Her answer was 79.5. “Watch Out” is a warning to a man who is with the wrong woman set over lush keys and a spacious arrangement.

Strictly limited 7inch!We should have come out before with this but time is always tight and we wanted to put the necessary attention and care on the second number on our label from this incredible artist. It took a while also because we have put together a family job, asking Willie's daughter Lisa, who is an amazing creative self on her own, if we could use one of her creations as artwork on the pressed labels, plus Fabio had to sleep and think on how to craft the best possible graphic package, and me and Max remastered it 2 or 3 times, as usual lookin after a perfection that never lands. Green Coil guys scraped Willie's memory barrel allowing a comprehensive sleeve note that helps to frame the recording in the right athmosphere of the time. As Mr. Wright recalls, “Real Thing” was recorded "around the same time as the 'Telling The Truth” album. Though there’s no certainty on the exact year, 1976 is the best guess as to when. The track was done at a proper recording studio, but Willie deliberately staged it to sound like it was recorded live in a club, including calling out hellos to waitresses and restaurant staff, who weren't actually there. The impetus for making this recording, and for writing and playing it during those days, was the fact that disco was literally wiping out all other forms of pop music, and even big acts were having to make concessions and put out disco-like concoctions to stay "current." Some of his fellow singers and musicians occasionally teased him saying he was too much of a "folkie" to do a decent modern dance tune. At the time, Willie's club performance lists were very genre-bending, and while on the surface he appeared to make concessions to popular musical trends by including covers of many current songs, his method was to slyly transform the covers and play against type. He was a performance artist who would show up at a soul club in a tuxedo and freak them out by playing mostly Dylan, Richie Havens, obscure folk and white rock, then go to a white venue and bang out a spectacular classic soul set. “Real Thing” is an upbeat dance song with a street-rough yet groovy feeling that perfectly expresses the essence of Willie Wright.

Sugaray is one of rhythm & blues music’s true hidden gems and he proves it on every track of this dynamite 10 song LP. Italian soul ambassador Luca Sapio made it his mission to bring Sugaray’s voice and music to the forefront, so he tracked him down to record his latest album, ‘The World That We Live In.’ It was recorded in Luca’s analogue studio in Italy, with tons of vintage gear, microphones and a killer house band. What they have so magically created is an album which sounds like an instant Rhythm & Blues classic. When Sugaray belts out a song, you not only hear it, you feel it down deep. The excitement in the room is palpable when he takes to the stage; his dynamic voice is large just like the man and stands comparison with all-time greats of soul, blues and old-school R&B such as Solomon Burke, Muddy Waters & James Carr.“Sugaray Rayford, a singer by the power of Bobby Blue Bland and Solomon Burke, has found his graceland in another continent, across the pond and over the valley, in the European city of Rome” - WAXPOETICS

Following up on the success of Sunny & The Sunliners “Mr Brown Eyed Soul” LP, BigCrown drops another must have 45 for the record lovers.Side A is a Sunny classic, “Put Me In Jail” is easily one of his most famous originaltunes. Sunny croons on, professing his guilt in coming up short on his promises to hisbeloved over the unmistakable Sunliners band backdrop. This tune has gone on tobecome famous amongst both oldies fans and lowriders.Side B is an obscure album cut lifted from the “Young, Gifted, and Brown” album,“Open Up Your Love Door”. Another perfect combination of romantic pleading andorgan heavy production leading it’s way into a surprising horn arrangement andclimactic breakdown. Sunny asks his love to allow him into her life and give their lovea chance.Another killer two sider wrapped up in a gorgeous picture sleeve we made from oneof The Ozuna’s personal photo collection. One side of Put Me In Jail, one side ofOpen Up Your Love Door...two sides to every story.

John Wesley Dickson is best known for his two contributions to the well-respected Praise Poems series. The stunning quality of "Barrows Blues" as well as "High & Dry" lead the Tramp crew to the decision to re-release his 45RPM single in a strictly limited press run of 300 copies. Those of you who have missed him so far are welcome to check out his Terry Callier style guitar work. Two sides of fantastic folky soul-jazz, certainly something which pleases the ears of any Rare Groove fan.

Limited vinyl edition!Although best known in the global music world for his four years (1984-1988) as the music director and bandleader for Whitney Houston, John’s tenure in the soul music field began when he was a member (with his brother Edmund ‘Butch’ Simmons) of The Reflections, a New York City-based quartet who toured from 1972-1975 as the backing group for the legendary Melba Moore. In 1975, The Reflections had a Top 10 R&B hit with “Three Steps From True Love.”In 1978, John began touring with Stephanie Mills, at the same time collaborating with Phillip Ballou, a member of another New York-based vocal group, Revelation and UK soul music journalist David Nathan (who he met when Nathan did an interview with The Reflections for Britain’s “Blues & Soul” magazine in 1975). The trio wrote a number of songs for Ballou’s demo as a solo artist and while nothing transpired in that regard, John recorded his own version of one of the tunes, “Ain’t Nothing Like The Love” for a small independent Michigan label, Sabrina Records in 1981. John had worked with Cissy Houston at New Hope Baptist Church in New Jersey where she was the minister of music was asked by her to do some initial promotional dates with her daughter Whitney after Arista Records released her first single in 1984; he continued doing world tours with Houston until he passed away at the age of 45 in March 1989.The Ballou sessions (held mostly in Montclair, New Jersey) expanded into recording dates for both Nathan and Simmons. None of the original recordings were released commercially – until now. In the wake of the interest among rare groove collectors in John’s version of “Ain’t Nothing Like The Love,” Nathan – himself a recording artist since 2003 – has uncovered the tapes of all the material he, Phllip and John recorded in 1978 and 1979.Gaining its first-ever release now on Nefer Records via Super Disco Edits is the coupling of John’s solo composition, the upbeat gospel-infused “Safe” and the midtempo, “I Wanna Be Closer,” another one of the songs also recorded (and thus far unissued by both Ballou and Nathan).

Eight long years have passed since the previous S-Tone Inc.’s full-length (“Moon in Libra”, SCCD/LP 407) and, even if Stefano Tirone hasn’t released anything under his popular pseudonym until Spring 2017, the longtime collaboration and friendship with Tomas Di Cunto (a.k.a. Toco) has never expired: Tirone in fact produced Toco’s “Memoria” in 2014 (SCCD/LP 467), and since then has never stopped working with Toco, who’s the co-author of 8 out 10 tracks of this release. As anticipated by the “Superbacana” EP (SCEP 479), the sound of the new album is widely influenced by the Brazilian soul-funk sound of the late ‘70s known as Black Rio. But there’s more, starting from the opening “Sands of Time”, an up-tempo groovy track with a lyrical cello melody and Manuela Ravaglioli’s dreamy vocals, and the mellow disco flavor of “Vontade de viver”, sung by Toco. Manuela is another historical S-Tone-Inc. artistic partner, together with Laura Fedele, who sings in the soulful downtempo “I can’t keep up with your love”. Barro and Qinho, two emerging singers from the new Brazilian scene, respectively perform in “Vale do mistério”, a downtempo tune that borrows some guitars from the alternative rock scene and cites Pirandello’s “Uno, nessuno e centomila” in its lyrics, and in “Chuva de verão”, with Qinho crooning over a track deeply influenced by Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield. The closing track, “Estrada real”, that features Luzia Dvorek on vocals, reminds of Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 from the “Stillness” era, with its acoustic guitar-led groove and its silky flute performed by Carlo Nicita. The remaining tracks are three funky grooves from the “Superbacana” EP, featuring the Sao Paulo quartet of 4Maré, consisting of Toco, Luzia Dvorek, Bruno Morais and Kika.Despite its various influences, “Onda” does not sound as a mere copy of what’s already been done at all: S-Tone Inc. took all the necessary time to produce a new record, and the result is a strongly original and personal effort!
