Original library synth funk sci-fi soundtracks. This promo EP from the vaults of Warner Chappell's production music archive offers four more tracks from Eleven76's mystique Space Voyage recordings. Originally intended for film synchronisation usage as part of Warner's music library, their unique mélange of analog synthesizers, breakheavy drumming, trippy fx and euphoric-melancholic instrumental fantasies has gained them a cult following among witty beatmakers, DJs, cratediggers, tape recording freaks and space age afficionados.

Produced by Paul Elliott, director of The Library Music Film, this promotional vinyl 45 was made to support the library album SPACE VOYAGE and to make the music available outside of film usage. Limited quantities available as most of the pressing is used as giveaway for clients in film, TV and advertising.

Contains two unreleased early 1970s monster soul tracks! This is a 12", 180g EP. On Side A, smile your way through two songs found only on PP006 by The Teacher Haters — in fact, we challenge you to get through these tracks without smiling. Straight out of the 60s comes a group that could have been played with Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs back in the day. These whimsical works are deceptively deep as they take us to a time when garage punk fused with R&B. The two bonus tracks on Side B are unreleased early 1970s dance floor igniters. The first track on Side B offers a special treat in We Got A Thing by an unknown group — a crossover soul dancer that invites you to sing along with an infectious, call-and-response chorus. Things go deeper with Guys Today - a soul beat ballad in the vein of Betty Wright or Helene Smith. At first glance, The Teacher Haters and the two unknown groups seem to share only a few things in common — party-themed music conceived in the 60s with an R&B flavor. But between sides A and B, it feels like these groups are talking to each other — perhaps different perspectives of the same party. Perhaps the party itself and then the fallout. The result is a balanced EP release that feels whole and satisfying. We hope you feel the same as we proudly present these found recordings as an exclusive 12” on 180 gram vinyl. Please enjoy.

Pressed at Quality Record Pressing (US). Limited Pressing. Monster In Town was Minako Yoshida's self-produced 8th album released in 1981. She shifted her sound from introspective singer song writer to heavy funk in turn leading to her next albums Light'n Up and In Motion. During this time she became known as the Queen of Funk. Monster In Town established her producer career that was sonically defined by a tight groove of multi-layered backup tracks, with a focus on chorus arrangements. The album features the same musicians as her album Monochrome such as Tsunehide Matsuki, Yasuaki Shimizu, also featuring Akira Sakata on saxophone. Strings and Horns are arranged by Tatsuro Yamashita and Yasuaki Shimizu (Kakashi).

Frank Ocean may seem like a house hold name to most, but he's been recording tracks for a lot longer than it took to make it. Before signing a deal with Def Jam or linking up with Odd Future, Frank was writing songs under the name Lonny Breaux. Over the years, numerous reference tracks have leaked out onto the Internet to be collected by fans. Now on vinyl.

The song “Love and Affection”, a real dancefloor burner, has been compiled on many rare groove compilations (included the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series). “Changin’ Times” is an album for life for all soul and funk fans!

"I just wanted to be honest about everything, from my musical influences to my story," muses Neal Francis. After years of dishonest living -- consumed by drugs, alcohol, and addiction -- such sincerity is jarring from the 30-year-old Chicago-based musician. Liberated from a self-destructive past and born anew in sobriety, Francis has captured an inspired collection of songs steeped in New Orleans rhythms and Chicago blues. His music evokes a bygone era of R&B's heyday while simultaneously forging a new path on the musical landscape. Ohiobased Karma Chief Records (a subsidiary of rising soul label Colemine Records) will release two songs, "These Are The Days" and "Changes, Pt. 1," in early 2019 with the full LP to follow in summer 2019.

It took a few years for multi-instrumentalists J-Zone (Jay Mumford) and Pablo Martin to bring The Du-Rites to fruition. With the former in the twilight of his producer/MC run and the latter touring as guitarist with the legendary Tom Tom Club, The Du-Rites was a vanity project at best when it began in 2014. But in 2016, the New York City duo committed fully to the cause and released a pair of instrumental funk LPs - 2016’s self-titled debut and 2017’s Greasy Listening - in an 11 month period. From the look of things, album #3 in just as many years is on the way, with the first single, “Gamma Ray Funk” b/w “Fish Sammich” setting the tone with Jay’s syncopated drumming and screeching organs and Pablo’s greasy guitars and in-pocket basslines. This go round, The Du-Rites also throw a curve ball and outsource the talents of keyboardist Rafferty Swink for a cameo solo on the A-Side and do a thematic update to Kool and the Gang’s 1969 classic, “Raw Hamburgers,” on the b-side.

The Du-Rites have also ben busy outside of their own releases. In 2017, they remixed Wax Tailor & Ghostface Killah’s “Worldwide” and in 2018, you’ll hear The Du-Rites all over the film score to Bobbito Garcia’s upcoming documentary, Rock, Rubber, 45s. Bobbito also entrusted Jay and Pablo to compose and serve as the rhythm section for the movie’s theme song, which features a pair of ultra-legendary jazz pianists, two highly respected DJs and an all-star cast of great musicians. Find out just who this summer! Till then, here’s a double sided funk attack.

“Fish Sammich” is a b-side only release and will not appear on the forthcoming LP. Sop it up while you can.

Following YMO’s first wave of success, Hosono took a break from the group and, with help from Alfa Records head Kunihiko Murai, established Yen Records in 1982. The label’s inaugural release was Philharmony, a masterwork recorded almost entirely by Hosono himself at his brand new LDK Studio. With unlimited studio time and freedom to explore, Hosono let himself loose with an array of synthesizers and the latest gadgets, from the Prophet 5 to the E-mu Emulator – all listed as “guest performers” in the album credits. Inspired by the possibilities opened up by these music-making tools, Hosono found new ways to approach his songwriting, resulting in a set of songs that showcase his ability to constantly and consistently innovate and create new standards. With ambient synthscapes like “Luminescent/Hotaru” and the abstract sample-based expressionism of “Birthday Party” sitting perfectly in tune alongside pop favorites like “Sports Men” and “L.D.K.”, Philharmony is one of the most well-loved of Hosono’s albums, and a favorite of the artist himself.

Following Tropical Dandy (1975) and Bon Voyage Co. (1976), Paraiso is the concluding saga in his “Tropical Trilogy.” The album can be seen as a turning point in Haruomi Hosono’s career, having been newly signed to Alfa Records by label head Kunihiko Murai. Hosono expands on the Van Dyke Parks-inspired tropical funk styles explored in the previous albums, and arrives at a captivating fusion sound that’s at times equally earthy and exotic. Hinting at the breakthrough sounds he would perfect with Yellow Magic Orchestra, Hosono uses synthesizers to provide otherworldly textures and a spiritual undertone to songs like “Femme Fatale” and the title track. On his Caribbean-style take on the Okinawan folk song “Asatoya Yunta” and the synth/gamelan workout of “Shambhala Signal,” Hosono takes traditional melodies and mixes them into his own inimitable stew. Featuring a host of well-known musicians like Taeko Ohnuki, Hiroshi Sato and his future bandmates Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Paraiso perfectly encapsulates Hosono’s eccentric worldview that has shaped his solo career, right before his techno-pop project would blast him into the stratosphere.

Eager to express his musical ability, Steve became a DJ on KDKO radio, and would then go on to compose, arrange and perform True Image on September 20th 1981 with a collection of drum machines, synthesizers, and contributing musicians on rhodes, flute, guitar and vocals.
Mr. Elliott’s philosophy is “You hold in your hand a dream, a dream come true by a man whose only objective was to express the love he contains, the love we all contain within through music.”

Forty Five is the soundtrack of a life. A revolution in sound played out in stacks of 7” singles; a long player that pulls together the numerous disparate musical strands that have made Boca 45 (aka Bristolian
record selector Scott Hendy) the DJ he is today, in his forty fifth year on Planet Earth. Having previously made records for Grand Central, Jalapeño, Island and Domino, Boca 45 returns with a twelve-track album that’s semi-autobiographical and full-time firing on all cylinders.
The first single from Forty Five = "Move A Mountain” featuring the soulful vocals of New Zealander Louis Baker, heavy on the drums, dripping with soul & heavy on the funk "Bryan Munich Theme" - sounds like an incendiary lost ’70s library record; the perfect psych funk-flecked walk on music for a team of doughty outsiders destined to lift the cup.

Almost always working with the same musicians as André Ceccarelli, Jean Shultheis, Tony Rubio, Michel Barrot ,to name a few, one day they asked me to start a Big Band Jazz. I immediately jumped on it and wrote in very little time the pieces that appear on this record. After some rehearsals,a few concerts, we decided to record these songs as an album called Giant. I made the choice of stand out from traditional Jazz Big Band by composing in a Jazz-Rock style . I also asked the french cast of 'Hair' to sing on three pieces. Then, the director of MP 2000 noting that only 100 copies had been sold, decided to release a Library version called 'Rythmes contemporains' I would never know why this choice of the title, with a very special cover:, a nice African, which has nothing to do with the kind of Jazz compositions! Needless to say, this record has had an international success with many American singers (Dr. Dre and others) who sampled some titles from this album.

Come be our special guest at the P-Funk party of PP-005 — a release reminiscent of those pioneers of funk, Parliament and Funkadelic. These found tracks by Bruce Marshall and Bill Thomas were likely recorded around the time of “Osmium” and “Maggot Brain” — in fact, the artists featured here may have been directly influenced by the movement as it was happening, making these discoveries remarkable entries into the history of psych funk.
Where to begin with Bruce Marshall’s “Gimme My Wife” on the A side? Try to imagine a psychedelic football game, with driving wah wah funk as the halftime show. The frenetic instrumentation is guided by an infectious guitar hook, coupled with a loose chorus of voices and whistle blows. They all come together at the end to chant what sounds like “parrrr-tay,” a foreshadowing of that refrain the Beastie Boys would popularize.
Things get a little more solemn on side B with an instant classic by Bill Thomas, “Ease My Mind Pt. 1.” A surprising dirge of fuzzy guitar leads into a chorus that sings, like a mantra, “I have seen much trouble...ease my mind.” Things morph into tight horns backed by some prominent organ — in fact, this is one of the tightest horn sections on any of our releases to date.
Psych funk is alive and well on our fifth release — adding a new dimension to the amazing body of P-Funk that’s already out there. Who knows what could have happened had these cuts reached ears during the 70s — but the time for the Marshall-Thomas ship to land is now. Put this on to get your next party going, and it’ll do most of the work for you. Get this special, split 7” on limited-run vinyl while you can.

Chocolate City is the third album by the George Clinton led funk band Parliament, released in 1975. It was a “tribute to Washington D.C.”, where the group had been particularly popular. The album’s cover includes images of the United States Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial in the form of a chocolate medallion, as well as sticker labeled “Washington DC”. The album was very popular in that city, selling 150,000 copies there.

Chocolate City features the classic P-Funk lineup with George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and Eddie Hazel. The Brecker Brothers, Michael and Randy, joined the band as did vocalist Glenn Goins. Prakash John plays bass on several tracks. This album also marks the beginning of the pivotal songwriting team of George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, and Bernie Worrell, a partnership that would last until the 1978.

The album is full of the uptempo funk that the band would be known for as well as the vocal harmonies of The Parliaments. “Let Me Be” draws on jazz as well as gospel influences. “Together” is a remake of “Together in Heaven” by Bootsy, Phelps, and Gary. Glen Goins makes his debut P. Funk performance on “Big Footin'”.

Chocolate City reached number 18 on the Billboard soul LP charts in 1975 and reached No. 91 on the album charts. “Chocolate City”, the title track and first single, reached No. 24 on the black chart and No. 94 on the Billboard Hot 100 while “Ride On” the second single reached No. 64 on the black chart."

The second Foreign Exchange album reverses the rapping/singing split of the first. Not only is Leave It All Behind much more an R&B album than 2004's Connected -- it's more an R&B album than a lot of modern releases filed in that section, given that Phonte slips into MC mode only twice while otherwise putting his sensitive singing voice to full use. Even more nuanced and textured, and therefore more musical than Connected, Leave It All Behind is a concise and complete set of songs that brings out the best of both producer Nicolay and Phonte. More than ever, Nicolay's mellow but moving productions have that lingering, memory-triggering effect mastered by the late J Dilla, and a multitude of shades is cast: dreamy folk-soul that ranks with the Beauty Room and latter-day 4hero, lean and contemporary constructions that would fit within any adult-oriented R&B station's playlist, deceptively frictional backdrops that bridge hip-hop to West London broken beat, and even the intermittent unclassifiable moment, with several styles thrown into swirls of crescendo-enhanced dramatics. Joined by Connected accomplices Darien Brockington and YahZarah (her lead turn on "If She Breaks Your Heart" sounds even more like a lost Stevie/Minnie collaboration than the Jungle Fever soundtrack original), as well as Muhsinah (an earthbound Georgia Anne Muldrow), Phonte does not deliver knockouts, yet he is not out of his depth and never reaches beyond his grasp, exuding warmth and sincerity as effectively as anyone praised for inhuman range. Even when his lyrics deal in the less complicated aspects of relationships, his voice provides a gently bittersweet tint, as a man with his guard down whose articulations are neither reactionary nor based on some false posture. And with love as its core rather than impulsive lust, as well as its unified feel, Leave It All Behind is not just a unique and exceptional R&B album but also a soundtrack or means of communication -- when heat-of-the-moment resentment, a lump in the throat, or anxious longing get in the way -- for a real-life adult relationship.

With a distinctly fresh style that evolved from the Japanese folk and “New Music” sounds of the early 1970s, Chu Kosaka’s pioneering 1975 album Horo is said to be the forerunner of modern Japanese R&B. Kosaka was previously the vocalist for psychedelic heavyweights Apryl Fool alongside Haruomi Hosono, and his acclaimed solo works are increasingly becoming favorites of musicians and fans alike. Co-produced, arranged, and written in part by Hosono, Horo features Kosaka’s soulful vocals with the tight backing of studio band Tin Pan Alley, and includes contributions by future City Pop legends Tatsuro Yamashita, Minako Yoshida, and Taeko Ohnuki.

After busting heads, winterizing Cadillacs and fighting crime with TV Detective Gamma Ray Jones last year, NYC’s own The Du-Rites get out of film score mode and return with a pair of one-word-titled funk nuggets to keep things grooving.

The self-explanatory “Zodiac” is a nod to the ubiquitous (and at times ridiculous) odes to astrology throughout funk history. The Du-Rites add their tongue-in-cheek take on horoscopes, with J-Zone narrating with his trademark wit and holding down both drums and organ. Pablo’s greasy guitars and overdriven bass add even more bacon fat to the mix. Nobody’s safe - see where YOUR zodiac sign is flawed in Du-Rites land.

A Du-Rites B-Side usually employs a quirky vocal-experimentation-without-a-proper-lead-vocalist approach - “Monster” continues the theme. Funky flirtation and jive talk from Du-Rites affiliate, Broughamin’ Fred, is the seasoning that drives the flip side, though our guest “vocalist” is actually more interested in his vehicle than wooing beautiful ladies. J-Zone’s pulsating, tom tom-driven, almost go-go like rhythm lays the foundation for a twisted Moog Synth vs. Hammond organ dialogue and Pablo’s freaky, effects-driven guitar.

With three albums, a handful of 7” singles, a film score (Bobbito Garcia’s Rock Rubber 45s) and playing alongside everyone from Eddie Palmieri, to Robert Glasper, to Ghostface Killah, The Du-Rites are discovering a trademark funk sound that isn’t 60s retro, 70s retro or any other hashtag or funk cliche. It’s just The Du-Rites…and this go round it’s both astrologically and monstrously funky.

Marks' story is that on an unsung soul and funk hero; a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter whose number was in Al Green's, Barry White's and Eddie Kendricks' rolodexes, but whose talents have only been heard in sporadic bursts since his 45s were released and disappeared into Atlanta's urban expanse.
Marks and his music are unknown to the majority, but to an obsessive minority, he is a lightning rod, that singular point at which numerous Southern soul and funk musicians converged and exploded, spreading wondrous music in all directions. Marks' impeccable run of 7" singles, released largely on tiny, local labels, are the stuff of legend, and are hen's-teeth-rare.
Athens of the North have recreated his rarest and most sought after deep soul 45 first for the first time since its inital release, 500 copies only. No Repress.

I, Ced has been something of a “best kept secret” among creators and aficionados of modern soul music. His wide array of skills ranges from production to vocals, keys, and studio mixing. His talents have found him in the company of many heralded contemporaries, including Jean Grae & Quelle Chris, Coultrain, Jimetta Rose, & Dam Funk. After having lent his talents to so many other luminaries in the underground music scene, Ced is now poised to make an impact with his own material, via his next project on Los Angeles-based MoFunk Records. As a label best known for synth-heavy west coast funk tunes, the partnership with I, Ced marks a daring expansion of the MoFunk sound.

I, Ced unites his distinctive “future soul” aesthetic with XL Middleton’s left side bump on the remix to “Percu,” first heard on Ced’s “What Are We Looking For?” album. It’s a stellar marriage of sharp synth bass, warm Moog-style leads and shimmering Rhodes chords with Ced’s hypnotic vocal chants and thickly-layered percussion sections, from which the track clearly derives its name. The remix is further heightened with an emotive vocal performance from fellow MoFunk artist Moniquea. As a bonus, the original version of “Percu” is included on the b-side, marking the first time any of the tracks from “What Are We Looking For?” have been pressed to wax.

With a limited run of 300 7”s this release is sure to move quickly, carrying broad appeal for followers of the modern funk movement or contemporary soul alike.

“A genius” - Nai Palm (Hiatus Kaiyote)
“One of the most incredible live performances I’ve seen” - Gilles Peterson (BBC)
“He's like a human centipede sewn out of all the greatest musicians from the past 80 years’” - Liam Pieper

Emerging from Brisbane’s music-art bohemian West End in 2008, self-taught, prodigious musician Lachlan Mitchell aka Laneous, began his eclectic and colourful journey in music as the leading member of funk band KAFKA, stamping his trademark falsetto croon on an Australian music landscape that wasn’t quite ready for an artist whose standout influence was D’Angelo’s ‘Voodoo’. Word of their talent soon reached UK’s perennial tastemaker Gilles Peterson who featured the band on his compilation, Brownswood Bubblers Four alongside other breakthrough acts at the time, Mayer Hawthorne, Floating Points and Lone. A world-class guitarist, vocalist, composer, visual artist and – significantly - muse, Mitchell’s unique ability to shine, create and inspire across genres was his obvious forte, even then. Regularly sought after to provide features for other bands and cover art for Hiatus Kaiyote albums Tawk Tomahawk and Choose Your Weapon, he worked diligently to support his community. But while Hiatus’ Nai Palm told media Laneous was “a genius” he often credited music and drawings to pseudonyms.

In 2016, after 8 years of humbly dominating the Australian underground art, soul and jazz scene [with ‘mutant-soul/croon punk’ cult group Laneous & The Family Yah, reggae band Kooii and improv-jazz-beat trio, Vulture Street Tape Gang] Mitchell relocated to Melbourne - a move that would instigate and inspire the long-awaited debut solo LANEOUS record that fans and peers had been craving for nearly a decade. Excited to create new music with an artist they’d previously referenced as an inspiration, Paul Bender and Simon Mavin (Hiatus Kaiyote) came on board swiftly, joined by Hudson Whitlock (Cactus Channel) on drums and Donny Stewart (Jazz Party) on vibraphone and flugelhorn - a key element in bringing Mitchell’s vision of an exotica/soul infused album to life. In classic Laneous fashion, the musical references for the record run deep, winding through an eclectic array of artists from Martin Denny, Burt Bacharach and The Beach Boys to Shuggie Otis, Wild Cookie and Wu-Tang.

The debut single Modern Romance was unleashed in October 2018 with a kinky, captivating visual accompaniment that marked the return of the Laneous legacy. After selling out the Melbourne launch of the single, the band was invited to headline Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM x Northside Records live Melbourne broadcast, teasing exclusive album cuts and drawing high praise from Peterson, stating it was “..one of the most incredible live performances I’ve seen’.

Out May 10 via Soul Has No Tempo, Mitchell’s MONSTERA DELICIOSA stands as a sublime genre work, peerless in Australia - his magnum opus bears the name that’s backed him from day one:

LANEOUS.

In light of soul singer-songwriter Rick James' wild and
controversial behavior during his career, it's easy
to forget that he wrote some vastly successful and
celebrated music. Nowadays he's best remembered for
a famous and celebrated sketch from the TV show
Chapelle's Show, or for his various arrests for drug
charges, but during late-1970s and 1980s he was a
powerhouse of his genre.
The nadir of this success was undoubtedly James' fifth
album. He was already a gold-selling funk/soul artist
with multiple Top 40 hits under his belt, but 1981's
Street Songs was the album that broke him into the
mainstream. The album took the smooth, swaggering
sound that he had built his career upon, and fused it
elements of rock and new wave, into a sound that
James dubbed "funk punk." It even featured vocal
backing from The Temptations, and a harmonica solo
from Stevie Wonder.
Street Sounds was an immediate commercial hit,
reaching #3 on the Billboard Pop charts, reaching
platinum status, selling over a million copies. In addition
to various Grammy nominations, Street Sounds also
produced major chart hits in tracks like "Give It To Me
Baby", "Ghetto Life", and what would become his
most successful signature song; "Super Freak",
which peaked at #16 on the US Pop Charts, and
was famously sampled by MC Hammer for his
mega-hit "U Can't Touch This." It caught the attention of
publications as well, who heaped critical praise upon
the album, even netting a rare A- grade from noted rock
music curmudgeon Robert Christgau.

Originally released on Gloria and her husband Walter Whisenhunt’s label Selector Sound as a 7in single, “Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing” features her soaring vocals backed by luscious strings, orchestral horns and a searing guitar. On the flip is “Brother Less Than A Man” which sounds like a proto Funkadelic /Parliament psychedelic funk bomb. Pressed as a 7in single on the House Guests label, it highlights a grittier side of her singing that matches the song’s depth and intensity. Backed by a rhythm section featuring Bootsy Collins and brother Catfish who along with Gloria and her husband founded the label after leaving James Brown’s band.

"In 1978, Nova performed for Obama. Well, kind of: Nova was the band for the Punahou School prom in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a young student named Barack (known then as “Barry”) was in attendance.

Backtrack to 1976, and Nova was the opening band for Donald Byrd at the nearby Blaisdell Arena. The day was Sunday, June 27. The following day, Isaac Hayes would perform on island for the admission price of $1.

Nova, led by singer Checo Tohomaso, was one of several go-to party bands during the golden era of Hawaii funk and soul music in the mid-1970s through early 1980s.

The band’s infectious gospel-funk-disco can be heard on their sole release, a self-titled 1980 LP that feels like one big party recorded live in the studio. (Check out the Marvin Gaye-inspired “I Feel Like Getting Down” on the 2016 ‘Aloha Got Soul’ compilation on Strut Records).

The story is all too familiar, however: funk band releases LP, the music goes dormant in years to follow, and today original copies sell for hundreds online.

Not long after the album’s 1980 release, Checo met Marvin Gaye, who was living on Maui (where George Benson also resided). Shortly after, Marvin invited Checo and his counterparts to join his multi-city tour across Europe. Videos of Checo rocking keyboards, percussion and singing background vocals for Marvin Gaye’s last European tour can be found online.

Checo, born in Florida yet raised in lush Manoa Valley as well as Okinawa, Japan, now resides in Vancouver, Canada, where he leads the VOC Sweet Soul Gospel Choir and continues to deliver his signature sound: high energy, positive, “sweet soul” music.

Nobody could have suspected the path that Clarence Henry Reid
would take during the 1960s. During this time he worked as
a singer/songwriter and producer for the likes of KC & The
Sunshine Band, Bobby Byrd, Gwen McCrae, and various others.
He would also release his own compositions, including the deep
soul classic "Nobody But You Babe", which would become a
sampling favorite of KRS-One, Erykah Badu, DMX, and more.
Though Reid maintained a reputation as a consummate
professional among the romantic soul crowd, outside of
his day-job he turned a complete 180, writing and performing
humorous, deliberately raunchy and sexually-explicit parodies of
songs. These parodies would be relegated strictly to friends at
parties, and wouldn't see a wide audience until the 1970s hit.
In 1971 Reid would gather a collection of studio musicians,
including famed R&B sidemen Timmy Thomas & Benny Latimore
on keys, and Little Beaver on guitar, to finally commit these
parodies to wax. In order to protect his identity as a songwriter
Reid took on the stage name Blowfly, and dressed as a comic
book super villain for live performances and photos. From there
he would release numerous studio albums of similarly crude
parodies throughout the 70s and 80s, which were enormously
popular as party records. These records would also go on to
become a wealth of sampling fodder for artists like Jurassic 5, The
Pharcyde, DJ Shadow, Eazy-E, and many more, as well as lead
Reid to collaborate with artists as varied as soul contemporary
King Coleman, to former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra, to
ganja-centric rapper Afroman.
The beginning of this explicit journey started with the debut album
The Weird World Of Blowfly. Across 16 tracks Reid and his
collective of session musicians would turn classic soul and R&B
hits by the likes of James Brown, Otis Redding, and Sam & Dave,
and twist them into bluntly graphic parodies, regularly diving
headlong into realms sexual, scatological, beyond naughty.

It was produced by Gene & Billy Page of Motown fame, with the backup of Motown musicians like David T. Walker, Wah Wah Watson, and Greg Phillinganes. Yoshida later said in an interview that she didn't want a Hollywood sound, so she gathered Ryuichi Sakamoto and her musicians at a studio in Tokyo to create demo tracks with solid arrangements before she went into production in Hollywood. Let's Do It is a great mix of Minako's Japanese song writing sensibility fused with a urban soul/ fusion sound. With the announcement of their long awaited, highly anticipated debut full length
release, 79.5 drops a new and revamped version of their underground classic
Boy Don’t Be Afraid. Producer Leon Michels took it back in the studio and made it into
a proper two stepper, slowed it down a touch, and added percussion and Wurly. The result
is another sure shot side for the dance floor from one of New York City’s most adored
underground acts. Like many of the girl group classics, Boy Don't Be Afraid is a song about
love. But beyond that, it is a song about being—being hopeful, being romantic, being brave.
A romantic stance and a declaration of love through melody.
The B Side, I Stay, You Stay is a beautiful number about meeting in the middle and a
testament to a woman’s intuition. A love song starting in hesitation, walking through
admiration, and ending in certainty and gratitude. The ladies weave this tale trading leads
and combining voices seamlessly over the band’s signature in the pocket drums and bass,
rhodes chords, and flute flourishes. I Stay, You Stay is a perfect example of one of the
defining things about 79.5 and why they are known as the “Mid Tempo Maidens”, as the
lyrics reflect “they don’t have to rush, they have lots of time”.

Superb, heartwarming and spirit lifting gospel disco modern soul 45 first released in 1978 on Philadelphia United Records.
Calvin Carr & Company are enriched with sensitivity and alive with the spirit. The kind of gospel that sweeps all over you and runs through your veins. There is always a sense of inadequacy when attempting to describe just how good something is. Words like exciting, inspiring and original come to mind but as always you will have to decide for yourself.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, gospel singer, songwriter, arranger, pianist, band leader and producer Calvin Carr (now a Minister of the Gospel) possessed excellent ears for music at a very young age. The sounds of music that shaped his life were the sounds of his early church singing experience. He began playing the piano at the age of 9, continued his work in music throughout high school, composing, singing in different churches, learned how to executive produce and ended up working for the TCS Music Company under the direction of its founder Mr. Tony Carter, displaying the talents of Philadelphia’s local artists such as Gabriel Hardeman Delegation, The Young Delegation, Little Sammy & The Flying Cloud Jrs., Gwen Carter, The Collins Sisters, Brockington Singers…
In 1978 Calvin released the now scarce and relatively unknown “Without Christ” 45 on the TCS “Philadelphia United Records“ subsidiary.
By the end of 1980, Calvin Carr met Andrew Ford and his younger brother and musical genius, Steven Ford and with their partners, horn arranger Leon Frison, drummer Garfield Williams and bassist “Ting” Paul Burke, they formed the “Sweet Rain Records” Company that has produced some of America’s most notable gospel artists such as: Pastor Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir, Barbara Ward Farmer and the Wagner Alumni Choir, Rev Hubert Powell And The Gospel Truth, The Brockington Ensemble, Southeast Inspirational Choir, The Institutional Radio Choir of Brooklyn, N.Y, Southeast Inspirational Choir of Houston, TX introducing Yolanda Adams and countless others.

The story goes like this. Many years ago Dave Thorley was mooching round in the basement of Ernest Kelly in Detroit and came across a bunch of acetates. Most of them were 10” acetates from his Geneva releases, plus a few others including a five track 12” acetate credited to Andrew Smith.
Andrew is another of those unsung Detroit hero’s, a skilled drummer, who was highly regarded by his peers. He worked in later line ups of The Funk Brothers and then moved to the East Coast, when Motown went west. In his early days he played on recordings for the Four Tops, Temptations, Spinners, Marvin Gaye, Dennis Coffey and Rodriguez, such was his versatility. Once on the East Coast he played with Bob James, Yoko Ono, Hubert Laws, Eric Gale and many others.
When Ernest was asked what the story was on this acetate, he said that Andrew had gone into the studio late one night with a bunch of friends and cut these tracks. Once completed he then took it to Berry Gordy with ambitions of becoming an artist in his own right, but Berry said he was better suited to being a drummer. Somewhat disheartened he gave the disc to Ernest and asked him to shop it round to see if he could get him a deal, but sadly this came to nothing and so the disc languished in the basement until Dave came across it. One problem has always been that it was very trebly, as often can be the case with acetate recordings. It much needed a restoration and remastering, which has now been done.

Modern soul fans have been singing the praises of the 1975 master tape to Kent CD track ‘Daddy Please Stay Home’ by veteran soul singer Obrey Wilson. Wilson’s sad and regretful vocal is perfect for this mid-tempo groove.

Lee Brackett’s bouncy, more jazz-influenced ‘You Get To Me’ is from a couple of years earlier and was also ignored for a release at the time. It is just waiting for an enterprising DJ to programme it into their set for future fame all round.

Big Crown Records is proud to present a recording that could have easily been lost forever like so many others from it’s era.
Taken from the only known copy of this acetate that appears to be a rehearsal recording for the group to solicit local gigs, these stripped down versions of “Get Hip To Yourself” and “Every Time I See a Pretty Girl” are American relics. The only information about the acetate is handwritten on a piece of masking tape affixed to the A side, the name of the group,
The Fabulous Dynamics, and the track listing. Of the 6 songs on the demo, we pulled the 2 most buttery, delectable, sweet & savory slices of mid 60’s group soul. Stripped down to vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar, both sides of this 7 capture the lo-fi, intimate sonic landscape of yesteryear, something that is often emulated, but never quite duplicated. Another pretty cool detail about this acetate, it was found in the personal record collection of Lamont Dozier.

Pumping their way out of the South Bronx of New York in the early 80s, this rhythm and dance-punk outfit made unforgettable funk that was also unusually rooted in post-punk. This powerhouse of raw and cutting edge music ultimately made them ahead of their time. ESG enjoyed success sharing stages with PiL and Gang Of Four and have been heavily sampled as many musicians including TLC, Wu-Tang Clan, Beastie Boys and Liars. A band-approved reissue of 'Step Off' will be released the same day with artwork from award nominated illustrator Hannah Alice, who recently gained critical praise for her work on the Bert Jansch reissue of “Avocet”.
