RP Boo returns with 'The Ultimate RP Boo', showing off six brand new cuts that mix a range of styles with his vivid use of samples and improvised drum programming. 'The Ultimate' kicks things off with a sliding synth riff that wouldn't sound out of place on a '91 Prodigy track with cut up rave vocal interjections over Bu's trademark pulsing bass. 'Bang with the Funk' crushes the 1-2-3-4-5 Sesame Street song, chopping its samples into hard shapes. Things turn dark and minimal with 'The King' which features a sample from Fresh, with strange atonal tones playing off against spooky chords and a tactile bass. On the flipside 'What Am I?' pairs syncopated snares and 4/4 bass pulses while percussion bangs and shimmers over clipped diva refrains and anxious piano. 'Bu'Moon' meshes together some pumping horn blurts and some old fashioned steamy synth wooshes that wouldn't feel out of place on a 50's sci-fi film into a relentless battle track. 'Electric Energy' finishes the EP, sampling an unusual pop source and chopping them over pulsing half time subs that pitch up and down around slipping and sliding drum hits.

Okzharp and Manthe Ribane return with their second EP ‘Tell Your Vision', a call and response between Manthe's vocals and Okzharp's production. Both bring their unique energies to the mix, manifesting in a raw confidence of new moods and temperatures that were brought out from their first taste of touring and living on autopilot. The EP's title is a reference to its opener, ‘Teleported', which was created in Okzharp's car on an exploratory drive through London and inspired by the art and energy they came across. The track opens with a ferocious bass line, with Manthe's rumbling vocals rolling rhythmically over the top. She takes us with her as she lets the music possess her as if dancing; quickly spitting the vocals back out, urging the listener to "Tell your vision!”. A much more gentle and reflective turn comes on second track ‘B U'. Okzharp's slow and soft lullaby melody and Manthe's warm and inspiring lyrics tug at the heartstrings. In the upbeat and playful ‘Maybe This', Manthe's vocals flit between a hum that softly swells over the top of Okzharp's spacey melody, into an energised and bouncing rap. The EP rounds off with the warm anthem ‘Piki Piki', with the chorus sung in the South African Sepedi dialect. Okzharp's long synth lines draw us in with Manthe's vocals melting and blending into the track. ‘Piki Piki' has an unmistakably positive vibe, which becomes emphasised when Manthe switches to English, with lyrics that advocate self-affirmation and self-love.

Calibre’s proliferation remains at a high as we cascade into another year. His output during 2016 was remarkable even by his standards… This year looks set to be even more amplified and it starts this Friday with Grow, the title track of his last album that was never actually on his last album. It’s not as confusing as it sounds: the album Grow was released on Craig Richards’ label The Nothing Special. As a label focused more on the free-form, experimental fringes of techno and electronica, it gave Calibre a chance to really explore a deep, more technoid focused side to his work and present tracks he had never played publicly before. An introspective and very personal project; some of the album’s music dates back to the early 2000s and the album itself took Calibre and Craig several years to fine tune into the stark, dark and provocative experience that landed late last year on vinyl adorned with Craig’s striking artwork.

Release:2016 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Berlin-based Obstacle Records returns for its second release with another EP that draws on UK garage heritage while offering its own fresh take via a trio of newer names to watch out for. The EP’s original track comes from Lesus - a hitherto unknown name that splices its stripped down Ghost-esque rhythmic backbone with an uneasy chiming melody. The A2’s remix from Obi - another name to keep track of - retains the pace & 2step stylings of the original while combining it with a Chicago house sensibility. On the B side we find two alternate versions from the mysterious Prince of Ethiopia. The 808 version mutates the track into a old school hip hop instrumental, with the aforementioned 808 sounds to the fore, replete with vocal samples, record scratches and ray guns. The MT40 version takes those elements, loses the snarling bassline, and pins it all to a broken beat rhythm, once again underlining Obstacle’s reverence for UK dance music culture & its desire to push it into surprising new territory.

12" | 2017 | EU | Original (Raincloud)
10,99 €*
Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Raincloud Records has announced its debut release, a two-track 12” from Mancunian duo Alan Johnson. Lead track, ‘Operator’, is a punchy, spacious stomper laced with golden-era grime horns and strings. Delayed, disembodied clicks, claps and pulses echo throughout along with a call-to-arms vocal pulled straight from the soundclash. On the flip, ‘The Poet’ builds an enormous groove out of broken percussion, spoken word and an intermittent woodwind sample in a manner that recalls early DMZ white labels. This will be Alan Johnson’s first standalone release since 2013’s standout ‘Goron Sound’ on Blank Mind. The duo channel golden-era UK soundsystem music of the mid-to-late noughties into a tight techno template, blending serious bass pressure with a dynamic rhythmic approach that pulls in influences from across the spectrum. As much touched by the bounce of UK funky as the driving tempo of techno or the abstract synths of instrumental grime, Alan Johnson’s music is emblematic of a generation that has lived through one of the most fruitful and creative periods of UK electronic dance music to date. Founded by producer/DJs Caski and Near – who have previously released as individuals on labels including Tectonic, Keysound, Ghost, EMF, Trapped Audio & Pretty Weird – Raincloud Records builds on Bristol’s famed heritage as one of the UK’s most exciting musical hubs. Sitting somewhere between early Hemlock and Hotflush, and the more industrial leanings of Livity Sound, Swamp 81 and Houndstooth, Raincloud aims to provide a home for artists reveling in a no-boundaries approach to making music for the dancefloor.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
After his acclaimed Heatwave and Shadows mixtapes, Leonce releases Insurgency on Fade to Mind, the first official EP from the young Atlanta-based producer. Insurgency was born from demos and sketches first recorded in 2014-2015, inspired by Leonce’s favorite elements of house music and his desire to recraft these influences into his own club microverse. In Leonce’s words: “If house is a feeling, then Insurgency is me subverting that feeling across different tempo ranges and going into weirder and darker territory, like the classic raw house tracks that inspired me.”Created as both a tribute to classical house and a critique of contemporary assembly-line dance music, the 9-track LP lovingly defies convention at every turn. Opting for deep shuffles and hypnotic progressions, his drumwork is allowed to breathe in this deeply personal spectrum, with carefully sequenced percussion and haunting melodic work. The digital version includes a bonus beats club mix of Snakes, with two additional tracks from Shadows included in the LP. Like many of his peers working in and amongst QPOC club architecture, Leonce takes personal and direct inspiration from resistance movements in contemporary America. His tracks reflect his own resistance, first weaponized for his own DJ use. There is a natural darkness to them, speaking to struggles in his own life and the constant violence against POC and queer americans. Insurgency is an artifact of symbolic black rebellion, and a sign of what’s still to come for Leonce’s productions.

Back with that spice for Type, Anthony J Hart gets down to UK rave fundamentals on a killer 2nd LP under his Basic Rhythm pseudonym. Where his more prolific Imaginary Forces output is all about the push ’n pull of power noise and post-rave techno dynamics, Basic Rhythm fixes a steely focus on the physics of the UK’s hardcore continuum; decimating and distilling jungle, grime and garage into their common and most affective dancefloor denominators.Basic Rhythm offers Hart up as a sort Leyden Jar battery or vessel storing decades of absorbed and condensed pirate radio transmissions, and The Basics can be heard as his disciplined attempt to parse those muscle memories and sensations into something tangibly, rudely physical but, most crucially, leaving aside those bits he considers unnecessary in a defragging process of mental sonic décollage - breaking down outmoded values and replacing at a distance from the original medium. What remains forms a kind of refreshingly eviscerated halcyontology, recollecting and rinsing out the good times spending his p’s on new shells at legendary shops such as Music Power (Ilford) and Boogie Times; listening to Rude FM 88.2, Unity 88.4, Pulse 90.6, Weekend Rush 92.3, Kool FM 94.5; cutting dubs at Music House; and swanging his jaw at legendary venues and club nights like Stratford Rex, Temple, Labrynth, Telepathy, Slammin’ Vinyl and One Nation. In reducing those aspects to a pointillist vocabulary of sawn-off drums, harness-straining subs and tessellating, tussling stabs of flava, he leaves a spare air prompting ambiguous reading of ‘dread’ and ‘ecstasy’, depending on the listener’s own reception/perception. It’s a dichotomy at the core of E18’s postcode-warring sublow shift, explored in the crevices between rap and grime in Fake Thugs, or the way Silent Listener (Adore) is intended to illuminate dank bedrooms, whilst the ructions of Cool Breeze (Summer In Woodford Green) and the fractiously mapped road rave styles of Blood Klaat Kore lend an overlapping sense of deep topographical study to the mix.

Unknown Archetype AKA Roxy Tripp & Oliver Kucera debut their visceral experimental techno for R&S on this three track EPUnknown Archetype is a collaborative project between Roxy Tripp, a British conceptual artist & music producer, and Oliver Kucera a Czech born Producer & Live performer, residing in the Netherlands. With an extensive background of solo projects in the underground scene, the duo began their collaboration together as Unknown Archetype in 2015.The TRIPP EP is an abrasive, visceral EP of electronic body music underpinned by themes of Jungian psychology, symbolism and mythology. The industrial tech funk of lead track Voyeurism kicks things off - skittering breakbeats, squalling filters and blistering snares pile-driving the listener into ecstatic submission, while ‘Tripp’ see the duo employing sizzling bursts of white noise and caustic percussion over a jagged rhythm box figure. Matters are pared right back for the rigid austerity of closer ‘The Serpent’ - the dubbed out lead stab quivers over a strobing 909 drum groove and scything cymbals.Effortlessly balancing deep late night sounds with a unique character and intricate headphone centric programming, the TRIPP EP is a fitting and welcome addition to R&S’s storied catalogue.

* With 'Footwork Or Die', Chicagos own DJ Diamond returns to the spotlight with a strongly infectious and deep brand new masterpiece, a very worthy successor to his debut album 'Flight Muzik', originally released on the UK's Planet Mu Records in 2011. 2013 saw the release of a reloaded extended version of 'Flight Muzik' and now in late 2016 Duck N' Cover Records is very excited to have the opportunity to bring more of his outstanding music to the ears of a wide audience. * Already, with his first album DJ Diamond, aka Karlis Griffin, made clear that he is one of the Footwork scene's most original producers, with a very distinctive style of his own that is not repiclable. The epic quality and deepness of some of the brightest moments on 'Flight Muzik' is back and in some cases even topped with his second full length release. The most important factor that made DJ Diamond a local legend long before the debut album was available is the apparent musicality of his productions. The style lends itself also to outsiders, whilst not compromising on the frenzy that is needed to bring the Footworkers the necessary heat. A hybrid, only a genius mind can fabricate! * In 2016, DJ Diamond still stands out and shines with a bright light. Experience once again a beautifully sequenced album with stylish artwork for which Duck N' Cover Records is notorious for. A perfectly well balanced compilation of deep and hard hitting material, bearing the mark of a classic great album that will stand the test of time with a smile.

Having already introduced the UK to Gqom back in 2015 — a variant of raw, stripped back South African house emanating from the city of Durban — London imprint Goon Club Allstars have tapped scene kingpin DJ Lag for an explosive four-track EP. Widely credited as one of the key players for shaping the Gqom sound as it exists today, Lag's eminence in South Africa is well-documented and on his new EP, he exhibits everything that makes it tick; fierce, powerful drums, mazy rhythms and bubbling club patterns. Like the sound he presides over, Lag's work is uncompromising, but emphatic — and designed to impact. Compiled from a vast back catalogue stretching back over four years, the EP showcases his sound to the fullest – from the bubbling sgubhu track, ‘16th Step', to the classic Gqom styles of ‘Ice Drop'. As with Rudeboyz debut Gqom 12” for the label in 2015, the EP also revels in a sense of discovery, boosted by a relationship between artist and label that goes way beyond the norm. More than prepared to put in the ground work, Goon Club Allstars have been proactive in reaching out to producers in SA over the last three years and, inspired by a shared love of the music, have played a key role in opening up Gqom to UK audiences.

Both a necessary document of Marlon Silva’s early years and a crucial survey of Angolan kuduro’s formative phase and mutation in the clubs of Lisbon, the set collects nine cuts of contagious Afro-Portuguese dance music which maps strong parallels to the UK’s own transition and flux between grime and UKF, whilst also demonstrating why Marfox is now regarded as the main ambassador and catalyst for Lisbon’s colourfully influential and world-renowned style.Taking his name from Nintendo’s Starfox character (and establishing a trend for the -fox suffix so prevalent in kuduro and tarraxhina) DJ Marfox was instrumental in shaping one of today’s most vital dance scenes with a number of productions from his 17 year old self cropping up on ear-opening compilations such as the foundational DJs Do Guetto Vol.1 in 2006, and later on the Bazzerk - African Digital Dance Music set which turned a lot of DJs and dancers onto this sound. He’s subsequently released the first record on kuduro’s best alibi, Príncipe, and followed Visionist and DJ Rashad to release on J-Cush’s Lit City Trax, and has also appeared alongside his Lisbon crew on the Cargaa compilations for Warp Records. However, this set returns to his wildest early years; from the hyper disco-techno drive of Funk em Kuduro or the galloping darkwave-riding horsepower of Un Bes Bai from 2006; thru the killer jump-up downstroke of Sem Fronteiras or the inimitable, body-carving syncopation of Aiué Remix circa 2007-08, and his hollering A Própria with DJ Nervoso - which could almost be some ravenous Chicago house oddity - all of which illustrate the sound of a young producer firmly finding his feet and blazing a trail where others such as Arca, M.E.S.H. or Nidia Minaj would soon follow. Most of all though; it’s a proper dance record for summer and beyond, either as DJ tools or the soundtrack to backyard raves, BBQs and beach parties.

Fifty First Recordings soon found a name for itself and was very quickly at the forefront of the new generation of UK Garage music. We produced and released music in the 90's, for over 7 years, with the likes of Tuff Jam etc. and later went to develop other imprints such as Konnect / Test Press / Unda Vybe / Spread love / Tick etc., some in partnership with producers and managed artists. This is the first release from Fifty First Recordings archives. “Footwork”—the very word indicates a movement of the feet that is “work” (as in an effort to achieve). Its joyous social party nature sits within a lineage of African American history that includes the infamous Soul Train dance tunnel and Hip Hop dance circles. However, as Footwork continues to become more popular, we should not forget that at its essence it is a highly evolved battle form. This is the central theme one feels listening to the stunning “Fingers, Bank Pads & Shoe Prints,” the second album from RP Boo, the man credited with inventing the Footwork genre with a 1997 track “Baby Come On” (recently re-released on the Planet Mu EP “Classics Vol. 1”).

* Following last year’s dangerously good ‘Depatterning’ LP, Ipman returns to Tectonic to deliver his latest instalment in bass-driven technoid mutations.* ‘Constrict’ jumps straight into the deep end at 140bpm, diving head first into pulsing waves of warping, dynamic synth layers; swimming back up to the surface for air. As the intro build peaks, the track effortlessly strikes when the bass drops in, charging the techno synth interplay with a sort of 3/4-step type rhythm shaping the movements. Impeccable dance floor music that sits in an undefined zone between the worlds of techno, dubstep and somewhere yet defined.* Flip then for ‘Running Man’, which sees a sharp drop in tempo, bringing the speed down to 120bpm but maintaining the energetic build of Constrict. Starting from an almost empty space, ‘Running Man’ takes an upward momentum, building and layering percussion and sonic textures as the heat of the chase takes full effect. Dark and deadly, this is one for fans of sci-fi sonics and dread vibrations.

Manchester native Alex Coulton has nurtured a reputation for creating sub-heavy rollers thanks to 12”s for the likes of Black Acre, Livity Sound and Bloc. With Gamma Ray Burst, the next in his series of releases on London low-end specialists Tempa, Coulton consolidates his sound to deliver some of the most sparse, rhythmic work of his career. With the record’s title track, Coulton weaves from hard-hitting kicks, through to dizzying tribal polyrhythms the whole time maintaining a minimal, space driven atmosphere that remains omnipresent throughout the track’s most intense moments. ‘Ground Zero’ revels in its spaciousness, allowing reverb to flood into the negative space between flashes of heavyweight techno percussion and saturated ripples of synth while the pulsating kicks that underpin ‘Alpha Decay’ are punctuated with bleak, discordant bells, rhythmic bass hits and hypnotic filtered percussion.Showing his diverse abilities, ‘Phase Two’ is an exercise in measured restraint, as a cacophony of clicks and hisses come together to disorientate before forming a driving rhythm section before Coulton maximises his expansive elements on the fog-tinged ‘Ascent’.Closing with the steady flowing, brighter-hued melodic work of ‘Distant Resonance’, Alex Coulton has created a masterful collection of experimental tech-focused electronica that bewilders, intrigues and will draw the listener in with each play.

Rising London-based producer Otik steps up with his debut 12” for Bristol imprint Durkle Disco. Resolutely rooted in the present day, both tracks gleefully nod to the past by channeling the darker end of UK garage, Detroit's industrial moodiness and the dusty depths of early dubstep. Remix duties for 'Acne Downs' go to Caski (Ghost Recordings/EMF/Keysound), one of the leading proponents of the slowed down 2-step sound, whose reworking aims straight for the dancefloor. Otik has been steadily building a reputation for forward thinking, genre-bending sounds around the 130bpm mark. In addition to his regular Radar Radio show, recent releases have graced Dusky's 17 Steps imprint, Infinite Machine, and Push & Run - with support from BBC Radio 1Xtra and BBC 6Music. All this makes Otik a welcome addition to the Durkle Disco ranks; joining previously released artists including Lamont (Swamp81), OH91 (Coyote), Lemzly Dale (Sector 7), and Superisk (Punch Drunk) on a label that's forged a reputation for pushing exciting new producers across a range of genres and tempos.

Release:2016 / Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Having repeatedly proven himself to be one of the UK's most innovative rising producers, Impey returns with his debut EP, 'Midnight In Little Havana', on the critically acclaimed Astral Black imprint. The release follows his 'BangClap' single which comes off the back of two prolific years that have seen the 20 year old producer crafting soundscapes for viral campaigns for Converse, securing a residency on NTS, tearing up radio sets alongside the likes of Faze Miyake, and having the likes of Skepta, Trim, Capo Lee and Rocks FOE bless his instrumentals on sets from Slimzee, DJ Maximum, Kahn & Neek, Murlo and Plastician. 'Midnight In Little Havana' sees Impey serving up a diverse five track collection that showcase his versatile production skills drawing influence from Grime, Jersey club and Vangelis-esque synthscapes. The EP is as much for the dance floor as it is the after hours bus home. At its centre is long time crowd favourite 'Bleepz' which finally sees its official release, having been a go-to track exclusively for DJs such as Boofy & Hi5Ghost and Kromestar. The track is framed by 130bpm dance floor melters 'Pep Talk' and 'Pong Song' as well as showing Impey's more intricate side through its title track and 'Inner', both of which resemble Astral Black releases by the likes of Drae Da Skimask and Jaisu moreso than its club-focussed vinyl releases. 'Midnight In Little Havana' is presented visually with another stellar effort from Astral Black in-house designer Oscar Whale; the 12" being housed in a full colour sleeve depicting an illustration of Miami's Little Havana strip, as detailed & nuanced as Impey's productions. 'Midnight In Little Havana' is set for release on October 14th on 12" vinyl & digital via Astral Black.

DJ Nigga Fox / Zutzut / Draveng / Bekelé Berhanu / HvadRabit’s Halycon Veil renders a crucial 6-track showcase of up-to-the-minute style and pattern associated with the rhizomic Janus crew; compiled by their mutual brethren, Jim C. Nedd and titled Conspiración Progresso after his Milan-based club night, Progresso.Scoping three debut vinyl appearances and spanning a dizzying breadth of idiosyncratic collage and rhythmic structures, the EP serves to illustrate the boundary morphing DJ aesthetics common to these far-flung comrades, both in their celebrated online mixes and IRL in front of the bass bins.A-side: Bekelé Berhanu follows a compelling 30 minute JANUS003 mix from 2015 with a tense, fractious collage of East African instrumentation, chants and bass detonations heard from an elevated, drone-eyed perspective in W.I.I.A; Copenhagen’s Syg Nok records ring-leader Hvad induces a juking motion sickness with the warp speed tilt and juddering pulse of Bleeding Grey Wall ; and Príncipe’s DJ Nigga Fox ft. Vipra contributes a squashed pressure system of slow, heaving, squeaky kuduro and Italian Progressive in Lento Violento.B-side: An Unknown operator squirts an Untitled piece of thrillingly sharp yet rugged quasi-electro dancehall chrome; Monterrey, MX producer Zutzut holds down dense mix of curdled, Autechrian harmonics and militant, latin drum cadence in the pitching slosh and bounce of Jala; the EP’s most minimal confection comes from Draveng with a writhing, muscle-tightening shuffle called Internal Debate that sounds like an insectoid Baby Ford trapped in a ketamine loop.Collected, Conspiración Progresso represents an imaginative cross-section of the contemporary dancefloor’s lesser-known, but no less than vital aspects: a new generation of club music lovers looking to advance, twist their art.

Fresh from the success of last years critically acclaimed PT 1 EP, Leeds-born Samir Alikhanizadeh aka Happa, is gearing up for the hotly anticipated release of PT 2, a 3 track EP and the second in a series of releases on his own label PT 5.Having first drawn attention with his tumbling remix of the Four Tet track Jupiters, it wasn’t long before he was heralded by the likes of Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs, James Blake, Zed Bias and Skream, to name a few. Happa’s love for electronic sounds is no more evident than on his latest offering; surging ahead at a faster pace than PT 1, with nods to EBM and industrial along the way. Opening track Blackberreh! marks a sideways move away from its predecessors. With spikey glitches, pitch-bending beats and extra melodic attention paid, the track plays out across a dark soundscape, creating an all-embracing big room noise. Catch-22 takes things further with abrasive beats and aphotic vocals giving it a brutal, industrial quality, and acts as the perfect showcase for Happa’s wayward electronic tastes. Closing out the EP is Drag, a juggernaut of refracted beats, displaying admirable depth and a real techno assault. If PT 1 was the product of a young artist refining his sound, PT 2 is the bass-heavy, hypnotic call to arms of an artist with enough raw talent and perseverance to create something truly astounding.

Deep and dark, strange but bold. ‘Salad Holder’ takes a more melancholic shift, turbo-charged with thunder-heavy subbass, dubwise flashes, moody pads and 5th dimensional synth lines. ‘The 4th Wall’ closes up the EP with oscillations from a parallel universe, diving through wormholes to a snapping rhythm.

On the minimalistic ‘Monolith’, a single element is moulded into a 3-dimensional sound sculpture, an aural illusion of a lead weight that floats away into the ether. In contrast, ‘Megalith’ has a pulsing gravity, drawing in laser-guided blasts of bass, broadsides of pitched-down jungle, and echoes of distant birdsong and telecommunications as it journeys through the static of space.

Deadboy is an innovator. His 2009/2010 singles ‘U Cheated’ and ‘If U Want Me’ predicted exactly where UK dance music would go after dubstep, though unlike a lot of the acts that followed in his slipstream, Deadboy’s music was never polite, and bassline house, dancehall and grime were as big influences as the r’n’b, pop and garage sensibilities that he combined so effectively. His single ‘Fireworks’ remains a high point for that era of UK club music. April’s White Magick EP, his first for Local Action, marked Deadboy’s largest record to date - six tracks as driven by atmosphere as drum patterns, but never losing the melodies and hooks that continue to set Deadboy apart from his peers. He now follows that with Black Magick, a vinyl-only 12” with extended, club-focused edits of three of White Magick’s songs, as well as a VIP mix of It Did Not Feel Right, previously released on Crazylegs.

Following on from last year’s “Your Charizmatic Self” EP, Night Slugs executive producer Bok Bok teams up with composer and keyboardist Sweyn Jupiter on a romantic new double A-side single. “Papaya Lipgloss” is a song about young love, presented in two distinct but equally weighty versions. Both mixes share a common melodic motif, skeletal yet sincere. The “Club Mix” draws on tribal House energy: a sweltering rhythm built of Latin percussion, Linndrum funk and pumping subs, over which melody gradually unravels in bursts of stark, juicy colour. Synths form a sensual narrative, remaining ever poised even as their pulpy goo engulfs all surfaces. This is intimate club music that brings a new kind of intensity to dance floors. Meanwhile, the “Sour Mix” is saturated and dripping with bitter-sweet nectar. This version sees “Papaya” transformed into an opulent bedroom jam, complete with quaking kickdrums and purring Moog bassline. A halftime drum kit of dumpster-drive 808s keeps things gritty while melodic goo leaks from between all the cracks.

Firmly rooted in the past but brought up to speed with a deftness of touch, Etch’s second release for the label is thus a promising insight into his own vivid sound design and a mark of intent from a label already highly-regarded for challenging perceptions.

The combination of grime stalwart Terror Danjah and living UK house/garage legend Zed Bias is not to be sniffed at. Flava D returns to the Formula following last year's ‘In The Dance' EP, this time in the guise of a remix from the bossman Champion that's one part modern soul to two parts dancefloor power. Twisting up the 2013 original for a stuttering snare-driven ride that's soaked in that unmistakable low end, Champion's remix gives the original more life via soothing keys, pitched-up vocals and see-saw percussion; hits hard and keeping you guessing throughout.

Packed to the limit with hyper-kinetic rhythms and manically chopped samples, there is nothing quite like this disc of pure energy currently in circulation. Not only does this album feature some of footwork's originators such as RP Boo, Traxman, DJ Spinn, Gantman, Manny and DJ Rashad himself, but it's also loaded with the elite of Teklife's second wave, DJ Earl, Taye, Boylan, Phil, Taso, Sirr Tmo, Tre and Heavee, plus extended members of the Teklife family from around the USA (Durban, Tripletrain, DJ Chap) and Europe (DJ Paypal, Jackie Dagger & Feloneezy), who were welcomed in by DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn while on their extensive travels spreading the footwork gospel.

Side Two descends into DJ Spinn's bombastic 'All My Teklife' and then Earl, Rashad & Taye's 'Bombaklot' which takes Hyperdub full circle with a yardcore bomb like a 2014 upgrade of the label's early days. Side Three leads with DJ Earl's immaculate diva vocal cut-up of 'I'm Gonna Get You', then moves on into DJ Taye's fizzling R&B jam 'Get Em Up’ and the stone cold, warped humour of 'Icemaster' by Heavee. On the fourth and final side, Tokyo-based ally Quarta330 returns to craft ‘Hanabi’, an epic, uptempo synthesiser jam. Young gun Champion follows with ‘Power Cut’, its minimal, energetic and militant kicks and bass molded with cowbell and lots of tight edits, before dropping some neat keys and a warping bassline two thirds in. Ikonika finishes things off with the solemn march of 'Tug Zone', opening slow but building in flickering high hats and gaseous cymbals into a track which could have emanated from Battlestar Galactica.

Traxman’s debut album showcased Cornelius Ferguson’s brilliant ability to synthesise the beat digging of classic hip hop with the high-speed abstraction of Footwork’s house-derived beat science. The selection of tracks on this second chapter show a slightly different take on Traxman's abilities. Instead of bringing in concepts from other genres, he simply creates a wider variety of Footwork, made with a minimal, reduced palette. Often just one or two samples are selected and diced into brain-blurring cubist puzzles that bear little relation to their original sources, or anything else for that matter. A number of the tracks here show off the high-speed micro-edited possibilities of Footwork, that end up bringing the sound closer to a faster, hands-on, mpc-punched version of micro-house, bringing out a jagged, fitful character that keeps you on your toes.

Following on from the release of Innershades' No Stopping EP on Creme Organization last summer, the Dutch label revisits the a-side cut "Nina" with two remixers in tow. Those remixers are Bristol's bass pioneer Kowton and the inimitable production duo of Tuff City Kids. Unterton and Delsin duo Gerd Janson & Phillip Lauer aka Tuff City Kids turn in a bulky, piano laced and acid riddled remix of "Nina" that is a pure party starter. Idle Hands and Hessle Audio man Kowton reworks "Nina" into something run through with plenty of sirens, raw, crunchy drum loops and rolling percussive lines. It's stormy and tumultuous and is full of frosty textures. These are two abrasive tracks designed for maximum impact on the dancefloor.
