Release:1979 / EU – Reissue
“Buio Omega”, two short and simple words that, in the mind of Goblin’s fans as well as in the horror/splatter movies fanatics’ one, recall sounds and images of a legendary film. Directed in 1979 by Joe D’Amato, it still impresses with the rawness and morbidity of its scenes, the trademark of a director who, much more than others, befits the term ‘extreme’.

The soundtrack of the film, whose main ingredients are keyboards and synthesizers, swings among echoes of Alan Parsons Project, funk / fusion and melancholic atmospheres. It was never officially published when the film came out, and was finally released on CD by Cinevox Record in 1997 (CD MDF 304) and again in 2008 (CD MDF 631) with two completely different tracklist.

Goblin here appear in an atypical shape, with Massimo Morante (guitar) and Claudio Simonetti (keyboards) replaced by Carlo Pennisi and Maurizio Guarini respectively, completing the line-up along with Fabio Pignatelli (bass) and Augustin Marangolo (drums).

Release:1976 / EU – Reissue
After the incredible debut of “Profondo Rosso” (Deep Red), the soundtrack of the eponymous 1975 film directed by Dario Argento, no one could ever imagine that shortly afterwards Goblin would be able not only to reach its heights but even further refine what the band already delivered in their first record.

While “Profondo Rosso” had been partly composed by Giorgio Gaslini, “Suspiria” is a 100% Goblin album, the result of a choral work in which every single musician was inspired at the highest levels. The band were here able to experiment more with daring and unpredictable combinations of musical instruments such as bouzouki and celesta, tribal percussion, all kinds of sound effects on the voice and on musical instruments, all perfectly combined with the typical mid-70s progressive and jazz-rock Goblin trademark.

Together with “Profondo Rosso” and “Roller” (a non-soundtrack instrumental album released in 1976), “Suspiria” was Goblin’s third hit in just three years, an LP that still today sounds incredibly innovative and … scary! Another masterpiece, a must have for any music lover, nothing less!

This score is an absolute tour de force. It’s arguably one of the most outstanding horror scores ever recorded. It’s ferocious, full of wailing, screaming, and guttural noises. Incredibly intense yet still retaining a musicality that Italian cinema excelled at in the 1970s. Dario Argento and Goblin were a match made in heaven, and I’m not sure anyone has created such a nightmarish mix of visuals and sounds in the history of cinema. In addition, the artwork by Randy Otiz is one of the best interpretations of this film I have ever seen! A Masterpiece in every way.
Goblin - OST Zombi Clear Purple Vinyl Edition
OST Zombi Clear Purple Vinyl Edition
LP | 1978 | EU | Reissue (AMS)
27,99 €*
Release:1978 / EU – Reissue
Thanks to the brilliant debut “Night of the Living Dead” (1968), director and screenwriter George Romero is considered the creator of the ‘modern zombie’, a metaphor for the profoundly consumerist and capitalist society we live in, that was perfectly shown years later in “Dawn of the Dead” (1978); this movie was distributed in Italy as “Zombi”, with a different editing made by Dario Argento and a soundtrack once again composed by legendary Goblin.

“Zombi” is a very varied album where the electric guitars, taking the lead in the hard-rock track “Zaratozom”, often give way to keyboards, synthesizers and percussion elements of all kinds. The real masterpiece of the record remains the opening cut “L’Alba dei Morti Viventi” (Dawn of the Living Dead) with its sinister, unrelenting pace evoking a slow and unstoppable march of zombies, impossible to escape from.

Release:1980 / EU – Reissue
“Contamination” was released in 1980 as a soundtrack for the eponymous horror/science fiction film, during what probably was the most prolific period in Goblin’s career, even if the band had already been abandoned by guitarist Massimo Morante and keyboardist Claudio Simonetti. Unkonwn by most listeners, it’s a release that deserves more attention, since it shows a wide range of music styles (Jazz, funk, rock, electronic) and once again Goblin’s ability in writing film scores.

Release:1976 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Rock / Indie
Roller was the second record for Goblin, originally released in 1976, just after the successful score of Profondo Rosso, and is one of the very few Goblin records that was not intended to be a soundtrack. By many considered their best effort, in Roller the band develops their dark, hypnotic and totally instrumental sound, but with an always vivacious and dynamic edge. The record also features new members Agostino Marangolo (from Flea) and Massimo Guarini.

Inside the vast Goblin archive, "Yell" is perhaps one of the less well-known tracks, that undoubtedly deserves no less attention that the band's most famous works. It's a song composed for bass guitar, percussion and keyboards where an opening reminiscent of "L'alba dei morti viventi" is followed by a sudden vibe change, due to the quick entrance of all the other instruments: electric piano chords, a pulsating bass, obscure synths and twisted keyboards still preserve that mix of tension and and darkness that made Goblin unique in the soundtracks area. The song was composed on commission at the end of 1978 to be used as the intro theme for a series of seven TV thriller/horror movies called "Sette storie per non dormire" (a title that could be translated into "Seven stories that won't let you sleep") that was broadcast in the autumn of the same year by the Italian Rete 2 RAI channel; taking advantage of the success of the series, Cinevox Record decided to release "Yell" on a 45rpm that included, as B-side, the song "...e suono Rock" taken from the album "Il fantastico viaggio del Bagarozzo Mark". The original edition of "Yell" is today one of the rarest Golbin releases, and is exclusively reissued for the first time ever by AMS Records on red vinyl, for the Record Store Day 2019 event. Not to be missed!
