Loraine James - Nothing EP
Loraine James
Nothing EP
12" | 2020 | UK | Original (Hyperdub)
13,99 €*
Release:2020 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Loraine James follows up 2019's acclaimed 'For You And I' album with a new four track EP, `Nothing'. Her chosen collaborators empathetically extend the feeling in her music with their own unique energies; Uruguayan singer and producer Lila Tirdo a Violeta, Farsi language rapper Tardast, and Htrk front-woman Jonnine Standish. The arc of the EP starts with Lila Tirdo's numb, repeated vocal on the title track. On `Marg', meaning "death" in Farsi, the tense drama of Tardast's despairing poetry describes the hopelessness of refugee experience, cold chords rolling sympathetically around his words. Jonnine shifts the mood with `Don't You See It?', recounting a moment of clarity which allowed her to leave a destructive relationship, Final track `The Starting Point` finds Loraine solo, with punched in bass and chaotic drums pushed through fxs that settle into a plaintive piano melody, the first and only instrument she says she's able to play "properly".

"It all started with Young H and Dread linking up on a tune, then they asked Rider to come in with a hook, and finally I got hold of it and worked with those elements for this version which we decided to release as a new record. I built Red as a heavyweight dance floor tune off the back of the energy response when playing 'We a talk' , the two seem to work well together. " Ishan Sound

The Streets’ first two albums ‘Original Pirate Material’ and ‘A Grand Don’t Come For Free’ helped to make the UK hip-hop/garage scene a force to be reckoned with on a global scale, and established Mike Skinner as a lyricist with a gift for delivering insightful observations about everyday life. Long out of print, both albums will be repressed and released on double vinyl on March 30th.

Originally released in 2002, ‘Original Pirate Material’ remains one of the most influential albums of its generation, and bridged the gap between UK garage and grime. Featuring the breakthrough hit ‘Has It Come To This’ and era-defining anthems such as ‘Weak Become Heroes’ and ‘Let’s Push Things Forward’, it made Skinner a spokesman for a generation.

Hot off his hugely well received EP on 81, 'Who is Genre Anyway', which reached the top of both the UK Bass and Dubstep charts, underground legend Sumgii and Swamp81 continue their roll this year teaming up with Kenya's biggest rising star Nah Eeto, tipped to be the hottest act in the country this summer.
Just like her ethereal, relaxed, soulful rap style that seamlessly jumps from English to Swahili at a whim, Nah Eeeto's lyrics take us on a journey, narrating the ownership of female empowerment in an unruly & sometimes dangerous, yet traditional environment, whilst naturally flowing into lighter hearted themes of just loving to chill in front of a good cartoon. Her flow sits flawlessly with Sumgii's eerie, yet enticing, minimal beats and it has resulted in an utterly mesmerising project that continues to break further into new grounds for Swamp81 who once again bring us a sound not quite heard before.
To match, it drops with a hypnotizing video, made and produced by Nah Eeto herself, brimming with scenic views of Kenyas vast landscape and raw footage of its slums and parties truly bringing Wanawake to life. What's more, an extra treat for Swamp81 die-hards, Loefah has teamed up with them for the remix on the B-side which is a club coup in its own right.

Release:2020 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
South London wordsmith Pinty releases ‘Midnight Moods’ mixtape via his new label Winged Feet.
Coming back on the night bus, the whole ambience of South London when there is no one around... that is the midnight mood”
Following off the back of his debut ‘City Limits’ EP last year, Pinty makes a welcome return with ‘Midnight Moods’. Described as a late night mixtape recorded over several sprawling nocturnal sessions, the release features guest productions from DJ JD Sports aka King Krule and Maxwell Owin. Culminating in 6 tracks and a ‘lullaby’, the woozy and loose takes were eventually mixed down and mistakenly bounced in mono as the sun came up in the misty room at 7am, then lovingly mixed in stereo during daylight hours some weeks later.
Leading with the DJ JD Sports produced ‘It’s Just Life’ in early March, Pinty rolls through with the 2-step tinged ‘E’s’ and ‘Moonlight Duty’, drawing from his late brother’s UKG influence which helped pave the way for him. Filled with deeply personal lyrics, Pinty isn’t your usual party MC as he spits over luscious lo-fi house melodies with closing tracks ‘Go To Bed Pt. 2’, ‘All Nightly’ and ‘Fresher’. The mixtape showcases his vast appeal, from smoky basement clubs to slinky jazz bars.
Pinty’s witty wordplay and effervescent club sound take influence from the introspective poetry of The Streets and the jazz tinged house tones of Peckham’s vibrant night scene. The lyricist released his debut EP on Rhythm Section International in 2019 to much acclaim, making waves with his distinctly individual live performances, appearances on Boiler Room and Just Jam, radio residencies on Reprezent and Balamii, and the front cover of the Peckham Peculiar.
‘Midnight Moods’ is out on the 24th April via new label Winged Feet from Pinty and Alexander Waldron, co-founder of Greco-Roman.

Low End Activist
Game Theory
2x12" | 2020 | EU | Original (Seagrave)
20,99 €*
Release:2020 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Following a high-pressure drop on Sneaker Social Club in 2019, bass-toting instigator Low End Activist steps up with his most expansive release yet.
His sound is a perfect amalgam of elements from the hardcore continuum – at times a dark and malevolent brainstorm of grubby drums dragged through crusty samplers, future-weary textural scrapes, moody splashes of pads and of course bucketloads of crushing subs, lows and low mids all designed to rock you from the waist down. You'll hear spectres of culture past lurking in the shadows – a trip hop skit from a gaunt figure here, a riotous brawl of grime MCs there – and feel the decades of soundsystem absorption seeping off the platters. It's like the LEA reached capacity and these productions were what happened when the sponge got squeezed.
One voice cuts a more prominent figure up front though – the peerless Flowdan, lending some powerful bars to Game Theory. What needs to be said about the Pay As You Go / Roll Deep mastermind you don't already know? His flow is mightier than any sword you care to step with.
Speaking of platters, this particular release marks the first vinyl pressing for Seagrave since the BOA 12" Warp Purpose Vol. 1 back in 2015 (slated for a repress – don't sleep!). It's an occasion worth toasting, building on a powerful and varied catalogue of sub-heavy sonics operating well outside the mainstream in service to naught but the sound, all packaged in a full-colour sleeve. As an expansive double pack of seven sure shots, it's also a fitting document of a subversive operative bringing some devastating angles to the hardcore tradition.

12" | 2019 | EU | Original (Homemadezucchero)
10,99 €*
Release:2019 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Time for the host to show up: HomeMadeZucchero co-founder Giesse gets in the game with a one track EP plus Demdike Stare's rmx able to fully scan one composition from two absolutely different perspectives. Main track Goji is a deep and overwhelming embrace among decadent IDM sounds, grooves oscillating between jungle and drum'n'bass, and rarefied atmospheres based on vague hip-hop reminiscences turned into echoing and saturnine shards.
The remix brought by Demdike Stare, strips the original piece to its bare bone by subtracting elements and shaping everything in three different blocks, working like independent acts that climax in a stunning drums maelstrom and resolves into a dramatic ending tending to a relentless sonic collapse.

2LP | 2019 | UK | Original (Planet Mu)

Release:2019 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Silk Road Assassins, a trio consisting of Tom E Vercetti, Chemist and Lovedr0id, return to Planet Mu with their debut full-length 'State Of Ruin' two years after their first EP 'Reflection Spaces'. The trio recorded over two years, working together to start with, then across different studios and via the internet when their lives became more separated. They also finessed the album at Abbey Road studios, making use of some short time to add in extra layers. The three producers day jobs are in production music, music designed and created specifically for film and games, and this album uses these skills to explore the musical forms that they love. The album explores how trap and grime's minimalist form can be built and curved into musical architecture: elegant, opaque and layered, turning the sound into lush, melodic world-building. The work gone into the album is revealed on repeated listens, every sound on this record feels built to sit within it's delicate ecosystem. The fundamentals of the music are given their own sense of purpose: hand claps spray, bells tumble, guitars splinter and lush melodies waft over and fill the track's spaces like light, glinting across snapping, crisp rhythms and deep bass tones. The album also features two Planet Mu alumini, Kuedo who features on 'Split Matter' brings some of his bitter-sweet shimmering melodies and on 'Shadow Realm' Russian producers WWWINGS give the music a violent metallic edge, providing the record with an epic and unexpected twist towards the end. Silk Road Assassins music is built to last, and a pleasure to indulge in.

Bandulu gang affiliates step forward with the second release on their imprint, pushing the new grime wave and keeping vinyl culture alive and rocking.

Both sides come in cold as ice, with sharp shots of detuned square wave, violin-chops and shards of hi-hat and claps making up all the original ingredients for a grime banger, yet the production and delivery give these tracks a glow and shine that makes them sound up to date and refreshed.

DJ Scotch Egg renames himself after Uganda’s favourite street food with a hardcore mix of dancehall and frenchtek strapped to rasping, barked vox by Swordman Kitala, while DJ Die Soon follows a turn for Rabih Beaini’s Morphine with a jabbing steppers beat for producer/MC Sekelembele, debuting on record like a turnt Elephant Man with ‘Moto Nyama’.

Compiled and sequenced by wise wan, Slackk, ‘Yellow Secret Technology’ is the 1st in a series of releases promised on Grime Tapes the label, which is founded just over 10 years since the demise of Slackk’s Grimetapes.com. During grime’s golden era in the mid ’00s, Grimetapes.com was one of very few sites online to share pirate radio recordings beyond their original broadcast range, providing an invaluable service to many appreciative ears and early grime fiends in the UK and abroad.

Our 14th release takes us to the darker side of the sound. Boylan has been the unsung hero of our label over the years- engineering and mixing down the majority of our releases and becoming a real architect of the foundations of our sound. Following his work with Edgem and general ubiquity on London's stations over the last year or so, it was only natural that he and Spooky found themselves in the studio together. Earlier this year they brought "Peckham To Hackney" to the second Boxed 12" and we thought they needed a release of their own. This 10" is the product of it. Low Rider starts the process. A malevolent take on the West Coast walking bassline style, we signed it before it was even a track - just a 4am 8-bar loop, haze and sub. After listening to that sparse 20 seconds on repeat for a while, they brought muscle to the skeleton - DJ Quik in Peckham. All Black Winter, meanwhile, takes their sound in a much harsher direction. Growling saws, gutteral strings and a brief morse code arpeggio meet violent gunshot snares and Boylan's bass science. One for the 2am rideouts, the double drop at 2:40. Support from Slackk, Slimzee, Murlo, Soloman, Logos, Grandmixxer, Mr. Mitch, Trends.
