Two of Hip Hop's most cherished icons, Talib Kweli and 9th Wonder have come together to create what undoubtedly will go down as an instantly classic album. INDIE 500 features an All Star supporting cast, including Problem, Slug (of Atmosphere), Rapsody, Pharaoh Monch, Brother Ali, Hi-Tek, NIKO IS and more. After exploding on to the scene as one half of the legendary Black Star alongside Mos Def in 1998, Talib Kweli quickly followed up in 2000 with the album Train of Thought, his collaborative effort with producer Hi-Tek. As fans, critics and his peers unanimously agreed, Kweli was cemented as one of hip hop's top lyricists and continued to release one acclaimed album after another - garnering direct praise from Jay-Z on his song "Moment of Clarity" from Jay-Z's classic The Black Album.
Meanwhile as the early 2000's progressed, a new trio was bursting on the scene from North Carolina known as Little Brother. Behind the boards of this trio was producer 9th Wonder, who very quickly established himself as one of hip hop's best producers. As their 2003 album The Listening reached a fever pitch, 9th Wonder's buzz became so hot he claimed a highly coveted production spot as well on Jay-Z's The Black Album. Through the years both Talib Kweli and 9th Wonder have gone on to work with a staggering list of hip hop royalty. However both of their respective works outside of the recording booth have become prominent pieces of their stories as well. 9th Wonder has established himself as Hip Hop's top educator, working as a professor at Harvard, Duke and North Carolina Central University, while Talib Kweli has become one of Hip Hop's most vocal and respected voices, who appears regularly on news outlets such as CNN and programs like HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. A collaboration between Kweli and 9th almost seemed to make perfect sense, but INDIE 500 represents even more to the artists.

Billy Woods and Elucid are Armand Hammer, the NYC rap duo whose 2013 debut, RACE MUSIC, made waves with its blend of aggressive, experimental production and uncompromising lyrics. Their new EP, Furtive Movements, is both a continuation of, and departure from, their previous work. Fragmented musings of an imagined diaspora. Brooklyn
bullshit in the shadow of construction scaffolding. Summer’s dog days set to the hiss of dusty vinyl. Drums wobbling drunkenly over ethereal loops. Elucid and woods hold down the lyrics with only one guest, the effusive Curly Castro, but Furtive Movements features an array of production from Blockhead (Aesop Rock, Ninja Tune), Von Pea (Tanya Morgan), Messiah Musik, Steel Tipped Dove and Elucid himself.

The cutting edge production is supplied by Juju and Psycho Les themselves, with contributions from V.I.C. and Lucien (A Tribe Called Quest). It features guest appearances by Grand Puba (Brand Nubian), Miss Jones and DJ Sinister (The X-Exutioners) amongst others. The Beatnuts garnered commercial success charting on the Billboard 200 and boasts two singles, “Props Over Here” and “Hit Me with That”. It is known for its diverse production, hedonistic lyrics and cover art inspired by Hank Mobley’s The Turnaround. It marks the last Beatnuts album before emcee (Kool Ass) Fashion left the group to pursue a solo career under the Muslim inspired alias Al’ Tariq.

In music, timing is everything. When soon-to-be-renowned Boston hip-hop duo 7L & Esoteric collaborated with the Wu-Tang Clan's Inspectah Deck on the title track to 7L&E’s debut EP "Speaking Real Words" in 1999, the timing was perfect. The upstart duo was building a serious buzz on the East Coast and beyond, while Deck was still winning praise for his gold-selling solo disc "Uncontrolled Substance". As flashy pop-oriented rap was pumped on commercial radio stations, their natural chemistry and simpatico skills shone as a beacon to real hip-hop fans, a base of listeners who were soon asking about their next musical summit.
14 years later, the hunger for sharp lyrics and head-snapping beats hasn't dissipated. In the face of the ever-worsening status quo of watered-down and vapid radio rap songs, the call for something real has only gotten stronger, and once again the time is right for a call to action – for someone or something to come in and send wack rappers running for the hills in fear. Enter "Czarface", the upcoming, uncompromising full-length album from Inspectah Deck and 7L & Esoteric.
Not surprising, respect for real hip-hop runs deep, and "Czarface" brings an army with it — consider the star-studded guest list which includes Roc Marciano, Action Bronson, Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks,) Oh No (Gangrene,) Mr. MFN eXquire and Deck's fellow Wu-Tang Clansmen Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna.
Aside from one track blessed by the almighty DJ Premier, production on "Czarface" belongs exclusively to DJ 7L, who provides the musical backbone which holds the album together. His ability to craft a hip-hop sound that's current and exciting with a classic feel left Deck impressed: “This is one of the first albums I've heard in a while that gives you so many different feels. You hear the ‘80s hip-hop style, ‘80s R&B and rock combined with what's going on now. That’s creating something new, in my opinion.”

DJ Harrison is Richmond VA-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Devonne Harris.

The son of a radio DJ who introduced him to the world of record collecting, Harris grew up with music, progressing from violin, to high school drum-line, to the Jazz Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also continued working with other instruments and developed an interest in sampling. His development as a producer – at first, without a computer or sampler – came first learning to replay samples on the drums, piano, bass or guitar.

DJ Harrison finds himself inspired by local musicians in the Richmond scene that’s as diverse and nonexclusive as they come. Among rappers, producers, punks and bluegrass bands, he falls within reach of an expansive pool of musicians to collaborate with. He lives and works in Jellowstone, a house turned recording compound occupied by his band mates in Butcher Brown, a “garage punk jazz funk” group.

HazyMoods, DJ Harrison’s Stones Throw debut, was recorded there completely on tape, where the living room functions as a communal recording studio.

Redefinition Records is honored to release Boston legend Edo. G's latest project. This isn't the first rodeo for either party as both entities have been involved in the making of hundreds of records respectively, but it is nonetheless a very special occasion. What's so important? The artist is humble, yet boastfully sums the answer with the music, "Edo. G Presents DJ Premier Vs Pete Rock". Having collaborated with both iconic producers on numerous songs over the years, this EP celebrates some of Edo's personal favorites from their legendary sessions, packaging key tracks as a commemorative 4 x 7” set. At four tracks deep plus the instrumentals (8 tracks total), it was difficult to pick the main single as any one of these cuts can stand tall on it’s own. Edo. G chose to leave it up to the masses and nothing's more hip hop than friendly competition hence the title "Edo. G Presents DJ Premier Vs Pete Rock".

Designed by celebrated illustrator artist Joseph Buckingham (widely celebrated for creating the iconic “De La Soul Is Dead” cover), the vintage boxing poster art direction brings the theme home and makes a statement. There are no less than 4 7” singles packaged in an 8 panel gatefold jacket, rich in colors, detail and with a proper tribute to each of the three featured artists. Need we say more? To paraphrase it, this is some of Edo.G's best work produced entirely by DJ Premier and Pete Rock. Dare to say it's not some of the finest Hip Hop of it's time. For those around the world blessed to catch the two producers go head to head on their string of international tours, this project is monumental as it was inspired by their sportsmanlike rivalry during their DJ performances. It is also is appealing to Edo. G fans as all tracks featured on this EP are long out of print and available for the first time ever on 45 with their exclusive instrumentals. This will be a classic hiphop collectors item. Beginning in the late 80's, Edo. G, DJ Premier and Pete Rock each are each in their fourth decade as recording artists. Now that deserves every bit of your respect.

1983 to 1988 anthology from the West Coast electro hip-hop pioneer.

Los Angeles native Egyptian Lover (Greg Broussard) is recognized as a pioneer of West Coast hip-hop, helping bring electro rap to the masses in the early '80s and influencing DJs and MCs the world over in his wake. The first West Coast rapper/producer to achieve international success, Egyptian Lover paved the way for early West Coast hip hop pioneers like Dr. Dre and the World Class Wrecking Crew, N.W.A., Ice T, Rodney O & Joe Cooley, King Tee & DJ Pooh among others.

Growing up listening to Kraftwerk, Prince, Rick James and Zapp, Egyptian Lover got his start compiling mixes of his favorite records, including his own instrumental beats created on his Roland TR 808 drum machine. The club-ready cassette tape mixes started selling in the thousands. Following in the footsteps of The Sugarhill Gang, Broussard began rapping over his beats to give the party people what they wanted. The neighborhood responded, transforming him into a local celebrity.

With his star status rising higher, Egyptian Lover joined Uncle Jamm's Army and moved 10,000 person crowds at the L.A. Sports Arena with his impressive knack for scratching, performing turntable tricks and MCing.

In the mid '80s, L.A. was becoming the electro rap capital and Egyptian Lover was at the forefront of this new West Coast rap sound, not only with his unique producer/DJ/MC aptitude, but also as label owner of Egyptian Empire Records. Selling hundreds of thousands of his 12" singles ("Egypt/Egypt", "Dial-A-Freak", "Girls", "Freak-A-Holic") to DJs and fans around the world. Egyptian Lover invented the innovative sound of combining up-tempo, synth-heavy electro beats with rap vocals.

Since 1983, Egyptian Lover has remained true to his sound by recording on analog equipment, which helps create his signature sound. Egyptian Lover's influence cannot be overstated – not only did he change the face of West Coast hip hop, but also greatly influenced electronic, techno, R&B and pop music to this day.

Egyptian Lover 1983-1988 will be released April 15, 2016 as a vinyl box set: four LPs housed in an all-black case with gold foil print, 20-page book with photos, liner notes by Jeff Weiss, and detailed track history by Egyptian Lover. Recordings taken from the original master tapes.

Pinata Instrumentals
CD | 2014 | US | Original (Madlib Invazion)

Release:2014 / US – Original
Genre:Hip Hop
There are few musicians – let alone beat–makers - in the world whose output in its raw form provides his listener with a full on musical experience before anything is added. Madlib is such a talent. Hip hop is his canvas, but he creates the most wondrous things with it. Before a microphone is switched on, before a rhyme even uttered, a Madlib beat stands alone as a complete thing.

Since the issue of the collaborative album with rapper Freddie Gibbs -
Piñata, already being hailed as contender for rap album of the year - we’ve been asked countless times to issue the beats Madlib created for the
project as instrumentals. And we've conceded. Piñata put Gibbs in the
spotlight, one that a growing audience is finally acknowledging that he
deserves. On Piñata Beats, though, it’s Madlib, quietly spinning on the center stage. Through seventeen cuts of arcane film snippets, dusted funk and soul, psych and prog rock musical diversions, Madlib proves to live up to what Gibbs once said of him: “Madlib quite simply, is music.”

Release:2011 / US – Original
Genre:Hip Hop
At the San Francisco Madlib Medicine Show tour stop, the producer announced a collaborative project with the rapper Freddie Gibbs and debuted songs from this EP: "Thuggin'" and "Deep." This 6-track record is released on Madlib's Madlib Invazion label - the imprint the producer founded to release his 13 Madlib Medicine Show volumes. The duo’s as-of-yet untitled album is planned for release in first quarter 2012.

For Madlib, this marks another entry in an exciting series of collaborative albums that he has created with the likes of DOOM (Madvillainy), the late J Dilla (Jaylib) and Strong Arm Steady (In Search Of Stoney Jackson). For Gibbs, the album serves as somewhat of a departure: coming off the heels of his acclaimed Cold Day In Hell album, and before the release of the album he’s finishing for Young Jeezy’s CTE imprint, this project gives the Gary, Indiana-bred, LA-based rapper a chance to stretch out over the Beat Konducta’s lush musical tapestry. If the first release is any indication, this collaboration will find Gibbs’ rough-hewn raps landing atop smoldering soul and jagged psychedelia.

Limited edition of 1000 copies.

In the whole history of hip-hop music, few groups can
claim to have been as influential and important as
Joseph Saddler's group Grandmaster Flash & The
Furious Five. Many of the genre's signature elements
and trademarks can be traced back to the supergroup
founded by the Grandmaster; their discography was
among the first to feature recordings of scratching
and turntablism, their's was the first to feature songs
with political and social commentary, they were the
first to refer to rappers as "MC's", some might even
say they were the group that first coined the term
Though Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five was
considered the number one hip-hop group on their
home turf of New York City, they only maintained a
following on a local level, performing and releasing
singles exclusively on the East Coast. It wasn't until
the release of Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight"
that the group realized they could break into the
mainstream. After signing with Sugar Hill Records,
the group released their debut album The Message in
Bolstered by Flash's deft turntablism, rappers Melle
Mel, Kidd Creole, and Keef Cowboy's vocals, and
production which sampled everything from Chic to
the Tom Tom Club to The Jimmy Castor Bunch, The
Message was a revelation of sorts. More than simply
being a Billboard hit for the group, the album helped
cement hip-hop's credibility with mainstream
audiences, and is considered a major achievement in
hip-hop history. The album's title track was especially
praised, and is considered one of the greatest rap
tracks in music history.

Detroit’s Son distils the essence of what made Ode To The Ghetto an underground classic. With the subject of life in the Motor City placed front and center, Guilty’s uncompromising rhymes fit seamlessly with Katalyst’s hard-hitting beats. The raps are every bit as gritty as on Ode or OJ, but there’s also a little light relief on tracks such as “Smoking,” probably about as close as Guilty will get to a summer anthem.

Genre:Hip Hop
Back in 2008 Delicious Vinyl issued a pairing that was just meant to be with multi-talented Illa J rhyming and singing over a treasure trove of previously untouched Jay Dee gems, a full-circle collaboration and a whole new beginning in the story of the musically exceptional Yancey brothers...The vinyl on this release will now be available for the first time in years. When Jay Dee passed away from complications relating to lupus in February 2006, he left behind an extraordinary legacy of production work, including hits for Common, Janet Jackson, and Busta Rhymes. In addition to the hits, he left behind a mother lode of previously untouched beats that dates from his time working on the Pharcyde’s sophomore album “Labcabincalifornia” (1995). As Delicious owner and founder Michael Ross explains, “From ‘95 through ‘98 Jay Dee was my go-to guy for hot beats and remixes. He was always making beats, always. So there was a select amount of tracks that he composed for me during that time, tracks as good as anything he’d done, only they never got used. When I finally met Illa J, I gave him a CD containing those unreleased beats.” It was a case of pure serendipity, since 21-year-old Illa J had just relocated to Los Angeles and constructed a studio built around Jay Dee’s own recording equipment, dubbing it Yancey Boy Studios in tribute to their fraternal bond. “Dilla was twelve years older than me,” Illa J says. “So back in the day in Detroit I was just a little kid, sitting on the stairs in our house, watching him make those first beats for Slum Village. I always felt my brother’s tracks and had an instinct for what I wanted to do over them. One of the things I learned from my brother is that you don’t get that much time, so make the most of it. That’s why I’ve decided to dedicate my life to doing what I love: music. To work with Delicious Vinyl, the label that released those hits my brother made with The Pharcyde (“Runnin’” and “Drop”) is really special.” Michael Ross says, “It’s like Jay Dee made these tracks with an extrasensory purpose, so that Illa J could make this album. There is no question that this is exactly what they were meant for. These beats belong to Illa J, they’re his birthright.”

Dilla’s classic, remastered from his original mixes and issued on Pay Jay as a badge-shaped picture disc single. The Estate of James Yancey revived J Dilla’s Pay Jay Productions as a functioning imprint and announced its release of Dilla's long lost vocal album, The Diary. But before that full-length is issued, Pay Jay now announces the final single to be released from the project. It’s a classic in every way. This single of Dilla’s anthem was originally released as a standard 12”. That vinyl is now rare and out of print. On the Pay Jay issue, both the vocal and instrumental are sourced directly from mix-downs that Dilla himself created. This limited edition badge-shaped picture disc single features Jeff Jank’s ironic take on Dilla’s message. The vinyl comes in a custom-made pocket inserted into a Japanese-style, resealable clear plastic sleeve well suited for the collectible this release is destined to be.

the early stages of his legendary production. The SP-1200 was his primary tool of choice at the inception of his career. During this period, he created classics for early Slum Village, The Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, among many others. After careful study and curation this one of a kind collection compiles the well-deserved documentation of Jay Dee's early musical masterpieces. Ma Dukes assembled a team of industry family who spent nine months working daily to bring this project to J Dilla fans everywhere. “The King Of Beats” feature's 40 tracks from Jay Dee's groundbreaking 'Batches' created using his SP-1200. In addition the CD release contains “The Lost Scrolls” and an additional 15 cuts created by Dilla on his MPC which was recently donated to the Smithsonian for their National Museum of African American History and Culture scheduled to open to the public in 2016. “The King Of Beats” is more than a collection of Dilla’s unheard works, it’s a glimpse inside the mind of a creative genius, a view into Dilla’s artistic process and a must have for any who call themselves a fan of his musical legacy.

Following the smash 12” single “Check Out This” Jorun PMC return with a 45 double sider ‘Stay Back (Keep Your Distance)’ b/w ‘Sammy Davis’.
Jorun Bombay has produced beats to transport you back to 1983 – or could be forward to 2083! The crisp raw drums have the sonic quality of the early 1980’s but the overall production is contemporary. We think this one will be residing in many DJ boxes for years to come as both songs are the perfect tempo and feel to keep b-boys on the floor.
Phill Most Chill never fails to deliver super slick rhymes to destroy any sucker MC and is perfectly at home on Jorun’s raw 80’s sounding production that tips the hat at the legendary Run DMC, hence the style of the artwork supplied the the wizardry of Mr Krum.
‘Sammy Davis’ does not feature on the forthcoming album as Jorun PMC supplied more songs than necessary for the album and as AE Productions always like to deliver value for money we included it here as it fitted neatly on the 7” format.

Jurassic 5 flexed serious old-to-the-new muscles in the ‘90s, beginning with their independently released single “Unified Rebelution” in 1994, and book-ending with their stellar debut full-length: 2000’s Quality Control. They walked a tightrope between underground and mainstream hip-hop, and toured alongside rap peers as well as punk rockers on the Vans Warped Tour. With double the pleasure of your average hip-hop group – two DJs and producers (Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark); and four MCs (Chali 2na, Akil, Marc 7 and Zaakir aka Soup) – they brought the late 1970s “unison MC” style of pioneering groups like the Fantastic 5 and the Force MCs to a new generation. Even more surprisingly, they did so out of Los Angeles, whose hip-hop flavors generally leaned towards Gangsta, G-Funk or Electro lines. Musically inventive and lyrically forward-thinking, each song on Quality Control is a new adventure, exploring engaging territory, delivered via one of the best live hip-hop shows fans had seen in years. From singles like the strutting groove of the title track to the throwback doo-wop samples on “The Influence” and the catchy, keyboard groove-driven “World of Entertainment (WOE Is Me),” to deeper album tracks like the lyrical gymnastics of “Jurass Finish First” and the thought-provoking “Lausd,” Jurassic 5 consistently stepped to the plate and their fans responded in kind, nearly pushing the album to Gold status. Add the innovative DJ-and-sample workout which closes out the album, “Swing Set,” and you have one of the 2000s’ most unique and solid full-length platters.

By popular demand, K-Def and The 45 King team up once again for another full length of continuous, golden era style instrumentals. Fans of the first won't be disappointed as volume 2 grabs the baton without missing a step. If you've followed the legendary 45 King since the 80's, his contributions on Back to the Beat Volume 2 are very assuring that after almost 3 decades and pioneering in rap production his signature sound is well intact. Complimenting 45 King’s selections, K-Def, a legend in his own right with massive discography dating back to the early 90s, used this album as an opportunity to have fun and venture away from the darker complex arrangements he is known for on his own, hence the album title. 15 tracks of bright and upbeat seamless grooves, perfect for listening anywhere, any day, at anytime. Volume 1 sold out quickly this release will likely move even faster. Collectors, don't sleep. Volume 2 of Back to the Beat may not be back for too long.

"Cold Crush" started as a simple request for Kirkis to remix a track ("Kikhabits") from Mndsgn's now certified cult-classic, Breatharian tape, for the Fresh Selects label. He obliged, and (much later past the deadline) turned in a completely new song, with nearly no signs of the original stems to be found. All parties involved loved the result, but agreed that it didn't exactly qualify as a remix.

So now, Fresh Selects presents it as it's own stand-alone 7” single, now accompanied by Mndsgn's own remix of the not-really-a-remix on the B-side, with both artists immortalized by Gangster Doodles for the artwork. All coming together as a hot new cold crush for the cold winter ahead.

Due Rent is a collaborative double album by solo artists lojii & Swarvy.

Written & recorded in the summer of 2016 in L.A. by the two Philadelphian transplants, lojii says “this tape is a score to being a broke nxgga in AmeriKKKa (emphasis on the KKK) – full of dreams and hustlin’ to make ‘em happen, but dealing with the everyday pressures of making ends meet. A.K.A trying to pay rent.”

“The 22 tracks, many of which barely break the two-minute mark, make for a vast voyage through remarkable contemporary hip-hop. The grooves and beats that skip and flutter are smooth and mellow, with nods to the old-school but entirely void of nostalgia. This is a sophisticated, thoughtful, and inventive modern hip-hop record that understands anger doesn’t have to be loud.” - Daniel Dylan Wray, Bandcamp (Best 100 Albums Of 2017)
