Austin based ambient electronic producer VVV (aka Shawhin Izaddoost), returns toHolodeck with his second full-length album "Shadow World". Following a wave ofhype from his early 2017 cassette "Why El Paso Sky", Izaddoost is back with hissignature style of half-time swing rhythms and dense, atmospheric soundscapes. Afterseveral cassettes, EPs, and compilation appearances, VVV's long awaited follow up to2011's "Across the Sea" (Fortified Audio) is here. Izaddoost's vocabulary on "ShadowWorld" has expanded to include extensive samples from classic Iranian instruments inaddition to his usual interplay of dark melodies and 2-step dance beats. VVV'sprecisely curated tonal palette and percussive themes make "Shadow World" his mostcohesive and accomplished release thus far. Ominous yet catchy down tempoelectronic music, "Shadow World" is the result of VVV's efforts to focus work on afully encapsulated LP with recurring motifs and source material. Shawhin has carefullydesigned each piece to be a movement within a continual whole, making this record athoroughly realized concept rather than a collection of individual songs. VVV's abstractmixture of fractured hip-hop and house beats on tracks like "Give it Time" and"Spellbound" are infectious, supporting layers of ethereal yet unforgettable vocalhooks. Interspersed within the propulsive dance tracks, ambient songs like "Circuit"and "The Descent" are vast and cavernous, momentarily relinquishing attention toIzaddoost's sophisticated and nuanced sound design. The unified vision and refineddetails on Shadow World makes the new album stand out as the peak of VVV'sdiscography.

This collaboration by Montréal’s Eric Craven (drummer for Hangedup and HRSTA) and Austin’s Jonathan Slade interweaves vignettes that swell and decay into and out of one another. This brooding and lucid work is in a constant cycle of ruin and regeneration, where fragmented wreckage degenerates into the fertile breeding ground for the genesis of the next. Movements of rhythmic guitar sweep in and fade out, propelling the album through a series of pensive destinations, while damaged viola phrases frantically build and collapse alongside increasingly distraught vocal howls. At times the strings rise to a panic, forming invasive waves of tension that eventually disintegrate into sparse minimal soundscapes consisting of dense columns of guitar feedback and clearings of near silence. There is no percussion on From Ashes Comes the Day, but Craven’s atypical drum-style translates directly into texture and improvisational structure (for which his ear is suberb), while Slade’s melodic articulation surfaces unbalanced and unhinged. Hand-silkscreened fold-over sleeve by NICK KUEPFER. Edition of 300 copies.

Signal processing and corroded elegance reign on the debut solo album by Christopher Royal King (film-score composer, lead guitarist of orchestral-rock ensemble This Will Destroy You, member of Austin's amorphous ambient collective Amasa*Gana). Organic sound-sources are meticulously transmuted through chains of modules and magnetic tape, and each successive stage creates a compounded quantity of detail and decay. Gorgeously tranquil and devastatingly heavy. Edition of 500. Includes download card.
