Bort To Death
7" | 2017 | US | Original (Hozac)

Release:2017 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Well look at this, a Brooklyn band that isn’t taking itself too seriously and is somehow actually dripping, and/or seething with raw punk ooze??? Look no further than Surfbort, a rock’n roll mutation with living, breathing, tentacles of terror, and even and traces of Texas punk royalty. Started a few years back and with only one EP under their belt, band leader Dani Miller is a one-of-a-kind force of nature both onstage and on record, as her presence just leaps right out of the grooves and clocks you in the face immediately. The music is stripped raw, painfully precious mid-tempo punk, all salty & agitated, not far off from the late 70s vibe of The Eyes, and if that wasn’t enough, they’ve got Sean Powell (The Chumps, FuckEmos) on drums and Dave Head (Motards, Headache City, White+Outs) on bass, to round out the ringers in the rhythm section. Dani’s vocals are right where they need to be, front and center and commanding from the get-go, the perfect snarl of 70s punk lingering on the edge of early hardcore, but holding onto that impeccable tension that’s usually sorely lacking in most cases. She’s got to be one of the best aggressive vocalists of recent note and the deranged delivery is a taste of pure punk honey that you won’t forget. First pressing of 300 copies.

Buck & the boys are back with a vengeance, and the new Streets of Rage LP is going to cause quite a few dizzying episodes of pure punk euphoria so don’t even start to think you’ve heard it all yet. Culling all the burned-out, hate-fueled visceral verbiage from the streets into an impossibly catchy and dare we even say 'poetic' benchmark of garbage spun into gold, Streets of Rage kicks off with 'Rock’n Roll Sucks Part 2' and just never lets loose of its grip around your neck/life until your record player is emitting the typical black smoke of overheated electronics. A slight uptick in fidelity won’t even begin to ruffle any feathers here, as the guitars-cum-food-processors tone is still hitting the spot every time, surely ushering in the next era of Buck Biloxi and the F*cks’ primitive pessimism, and establishing this New Orleans troupe as one of the modern era’s greats, stomping their way through a sea of pretenders..."—VictimofTime. First pressing of 500 copies on black vinyl.

The sophomore LP outing from the French breakthrough underground sensations, THE LIMINANAS, who are embarking on an even darker journey on this voyage into the stickiest, most vulnerable parts of your brain. After triumphantly completing their maiden US tour last year and proving to the world how effortlessly they capture their recorded essence in a live setting, they have returned with Crystal Anis, an LP brimming with perfect, humming, fuzz-filled effervescent pop so alluring and seductive in it's most intimate points that it's easy to get lost as the heavenly sounds rush over your soul. It's a perfect slice of modern French Ye-Ye gone underground, conjuring a dimly-lit atmosphere where the long lost transcendent sounds of The Factory intersperse with modern noir nuances to unbelievable effect. This is the Liminanas hitting their compositional peak stride, with lush instrumentation, building on their signature thick-accented tension, all properly enveloped within their monumentally textured songwriting style. 'Heavenly' doesn't even begin to describe it, but it's a great place to start. LP edition of 600 copies.

The Terminals were a mid-late 80s-era supergroup featuring many important shards of the Kiwi underground, including core members Peter Stapleton, Mary Heney, and Ross Humphries from the very first Flying Nun release, the monumental Pin Group, joined with Susan Heney from The McGoohans, as well as Stephen Cogle from Vacuum and Victor Dimisich Band. Hard to keep all those intersections straight, that’s for sure, but this intense, brooding and ominous cadre of players have pulled together some of the darkest sounds to ever emanate from the isle. It’s hard to pick favorites with The Terminals, but ‘Uncoffined’ their debut LP recorded in 1988 seemed like the best place to start. It’s hard to believe something this dark and twisted could also be so catchy, sounding like not much else from the time, The Terminals never caught the indie rock afterglow that label mates The Clean, The Bats, or The Verlaines got, yet their catalog of dubious releases is still being discovered, even now as we speak. Remastered from the original tapes to revive what was lost in the haze of limp late 1980s studio mastering techniques, this improved version sparkles with hostility, the sheen of atmospheric shadows interlaced between tension-building crescendos, The Terminals ‘Uncoffined’ is a lost masterpiece of Antipodean dark wave pop music destined to reinstate it’s place in the annals of underground music history.

Have no fear, Heavy Times are still throbbing along better than ever, lurking in the shadows, trying hard to not act like they're the best band in Chicago.

Not the famous British DJ responsible for the "Peel Sessions" but just as important to the early landscape of not just the "punk mindset" but more specifically planting the seeds for one of the most revered punk scenes in history: the Lower East Side of NYC. His epic 1978 masterpiece lays waste & disrespect for the punk bands of the moment, a grinding, gritty, & gutteral trip through the mind of a true radical revolutionary punk icon

In 1985 The Scientists, Kim Salmon's Australian post punk band were stranded. On the eve of a major UK tour, their talented, yet difficult drummer Brett Rixon walked out on the band. A number of name “Rock” drummers were hired to replicate Rixon’s parts, however, it never sounded like The Scientists. Eventually, the band’s tour manager Leanne Cowie secretly purchased Rixon’s drum kit and proceeded to learn the instrument through The Scientists' repertoire. After a few more failed auditions with what would be viewed by any other band as more than worthy applicants, Leanne was finally asked to join the band. Instantly, The Scientists sounded like The Scientists. With Leanne as Rixon’s replacement, the band was able to tour and record a little longer. However, even with this vital transplant, the band’s days were numbered and by 1987 it was no more. Now with the newly reformed Scientists (with Leanne on drums) playing again, a re-ignited Salmon and Cowie entered a Melbourne studio and within a few days, True West was born. The material on True West has echoes of the classic Scientists' Swampy sound especially in the tracks "Freudian Slippers" and "Get A Hold Of Your World." And "The Science Test" is another exercise in Minimalism. "Carry On Baggage" recalls classic Nuggets Garage Punk. They also manage to throw a Rolling Stones cover in "Dead Flowers." But, you have never heard the Stones do anything like this. The album also contains a few hip hop moments, glam rock and funnily enough a couple of "Rock" songs. Edition of 400 copies.

Stemming from the mind of Harriet Hudson, (Circle Pit, Southern Comfort), this single features some of the most druggy, wirey, & most importantly, witchy guitar solos stitching up a gravelly pair of unsettling mid-tempo punk numbers like a freshly slaughtered corpse. Originally forged as an exact opposite blueprint of the archetype female-fronted punk group, this band is a fully-backed female force of contention with one deranged & sufficiently blurred frontman slashing forth and breaking the stereotype into micro shards of glass you will never be able to completely pick out of your fine upholstery. This debut LP is no joy ride, an instant agitator, a tool for stirring up your inner turmoil, a safe place to keep your paranoid thoughts where they can drift around in a contained space.

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! THE PEOPLES TEMPLE have righteously returned with a sliver of their next wave, and with the anxiously awaited follow-up to their debut LP Sons of Stone, we have a band on our hands here with their heads clearly going in the right direction. The Lansing, Michigan snarlers have constructed their sophomore LP, More For The Masses, with a taste of what they've been working on since their last outing, and it's got us seething with excitement to share it with the world. The new songs show a bold advance in the songwriting structure, with intricate arrangements, incredibly diverse new directions not far off from the pioneering material spurned forth from the iconic '60s band Love. We're talking flashes of primitive baroque pop and British 'Fading Yellow'-style songs, albeit not absent of their illustrious fuzz guitar flourishes we've all come to love and expect, laid on thick. More For The Masses is a perfect example of what Peoples Temple do best, a direct shot to the dome of perfect rock'n roll snarl, classic pop, head-expanding fuzz, those two-part vocal harmonies, and an ever-compelling riff that takes you over the edge and back within minutes. Peoples Temple have built on their unusual knack for crafting original pop music sounding like it's been stripped out of the ashes of time, only to emerge with some of the most creatively exciting sounds coming out of the Midwest in years. LP edition of 550 copies.
