LP | 2020 | UK | Original (Hyperdub)

Release:2020 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
LP limited to 500 copies.Mhysa, the newest addition to the Hyperdub roster, is `a popstar for the cyber resistance' hailing from Maryland via New York. `Nevaeh' is lo-fi R&B with a bedroom feel and challenging lyricism focussed on identity and black experience for the online generation. She started `Nevaeh' in late 2017, shortly after the release of debut album `Fantasii', recording at home with some input from Lawd Knows, a frequent collaborator on her Scraaatch project. It is Mhysa's intimate reflection on the black femme experience from multiple vantage points : sex and sexuality, self-love and self-discovery, black empowerment and lineage, and pleasure or the lack of it. She describes the album as "a prayer for Black women and femmes to be taken to or find a new and better world away from the apocalypse ... a safe space, a sort of negro heaven."`Nevaeh' is deeply personal but easily relatable, its intimacy heightened by scattered acapella moments and interludes referencing black pop culture, where Mhysa's delicate voice is laid bare, while other tracks reprise the melancholic R&B her mother raised her on, updated through a queer lens. Conversely, several of the album's tunes have found space in Kode9's club sets over the last year, like the mischievous `Sanaa Lathan' and skeletal `w_me'.Of this record's progression from the last, Mhysa sought "to be more vulnerable and experiment with vocal range_to write more complicated vocal melodies that would be harder to do", with her production now experimenting with new techniques, and (often self-taught) live instrumentation, as is her family tradition.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
`Flush Real Pharynx' is the title of sound designer/artist/composer and DJ Lee Gamble's new three-part album for Hyperdub. The triptych loosely explores three stages of the Semioblitz - the aggressive onslaught of visual and sonic stimuli of contemporary cities and virtual spaces. From `In A Paraventral Scale' (the first part of the triptych released at the start of 2019) the coil springs out into the straight-up choked semioblitz of part 2 _ `Exhaust'. Gone are the serpentine dopplers and seductive supercar engines. `Exhaust's neon-charms coalesce into an MDMA rush of Boston Dynamics dog barks, hypnotic voices and imploding motion sculptures. From the backfiring splinters of `CREAM' through disorientating photo shutter snare patterns of `Shard', `Exhaust's sultry voices take you for a 300mph ride down the psychedelic high street stitching together clashing strands of club soundscapes on its way.`Exhaust' engages in a world well and truly with us right now - explosive, chaotic, unpredictable, contradictory, intoxicating, hyper-colourful, blown-apart and disturbingly engaging in its surreality. It's Gamble's `Gully Automated Music Concrète', sounding out from a high rise overlooking the Ballardian motion-sculpture of a collapsing motorway system.

Durban gqom ambassador DJ Lag and London-based Okzharp combine over four club heavy tracks rooted in their long-term long-distance connection, the EP's title originating from the Durban nickname for the local clubs where much early gqom-style music was played. Opener `Now What' layers a wooden percussion scraper with a ticking cow bell and chants. Set at a slightly faster pace than most gqom, the track harbours a dark energy at its core generated by a low rumbling background synth and pitch shifting claps. `Steam One' - inspired by DJ Lag's set at Hyperdub's club night O after he brought the heavy steam room vibe - has a slow and entrancing build up with a subtle melody layering on stabbing syncopated kicks, leading up to a woozy synth breakdown. "We were inspired by that moment in the club when things get hazy and bendy and glowy. It has South Durban via South London DNA, so inevitably there's a heavy kwai-gqom vibe with a grimey funky London twist running through it". `Nyusa' opens with a grinding acidic bass line overlaid with a metallic and gravelly melody with suppressed chants. Sharp kicks drive the track leading up to a wobbly synth breakdown and back up synth stabs raising the energy. Finally, `Sambe' pairs menacing strings with a steel drum melody, displaying characteristics of both funky house and gqom in a subtle meeting of the two styles.

Jesse Kanda is a visual artist and musician widely known for his modern gothic surrealist art, especially his work with Björk, Arca, and FKA twigs, and in recent years for his own musical output as Doon Kanda. At Hyperdub, we are very excited by his transition into music; if there were a sound to his beautiful, otherworldly art, this is it in its pure form.`Labyrinth' is his debut album, comprised of 13 pieces of new music, and 10 artworks. It is a dreamlike, exhilarating listen from start to finish, covering emotional ground from hell to heaven. It was created between summer 2018 and spring 2019 in London and Ontario. His two previous EPs 'Heart' (2017) and 'Luna' (2018) focused on melody across a spectrum of emotion, and like his visual work often metamorphosed pain into beauty. 'Labyrinth' chronicles a period of loss, in ecstatic fantasy.Stylistically, much of the album is in 3/4 time signature in rhythms reminiscent of waltz, allowing Kanda to create movement through melody. This idiosyncratic gothic style was hinted at in his first EP, and is in full bloom here. It is also a proposition of a new form of club music; one can imagine venues transformed into an alien world, where the music moves the crowd in previously unknown ways. The album has a narrative arc of building chaos, peaking with `'Mino', then a resolve of clarity at `Bunny'. Jesse hopes listeners experience `Labyrinth' in its presented order, while maybe flipping through the artwork in the accompanying full size 10 page picture book.

Raised in the multicultural and mind-broadening London borough of Enfield, Loraine James grew up hearing everything from steel pan music to Metallica, from jazz and electronica to drill and grime, and the results of this exposure can be heard on 'For You And I'. In part the album explores the complexities of being in a queer relationship in London - "I'm in love and wanted to share that in some way _ to make songs that reflect layers of my relationship." - and as a whole 'For You and I' is rhythmically free flowing and sprawling, with melodies that evolve into rippling keys, feeling like a live jam session with a jazz mentality, contrasting the delicate and abrasive. Opener 'Glitch Bitch' is a warm ear-worm, brandishing swirling textures with undulating keys and compressed percussion, with an introspective theme revisited soon after on third track 'So Scared', whose glitched percussion and syncopated dub bassline build to a frantic meltdown melody. On 'London Ting // Dark As Fuck', inspired by Dizzee Rascals's 'Boy In Da Corner', James explores the darker side of her production with her frequent collaborator Le3 BLACK laying verses over the skeletal track. 'Hand Drops' is an instrumental, about public displays of affection in a queer relationship. 'Sensual' reflects on intimacy with vocals by UK singer Theo, who's lyrics capture love and gentleness over a soft, minimal production of ethereal keys and scattered glitches. The albums' title track is also the most colourful, it's ecstatic and effusive chaos driven by fervent synths expressing elation and the joyful side of her relationship, while 'My Future' is a more reflective moment, where warping synths wash in and out with compressed kicks, as the artist considers the dangers that may come with her relationship : "I wanna tie the knot / But the rope is dangerous". 'For You And I' is a deeply intimate and personal offering, expressing happiness, anxiety, joy, sensuality and fear through a vivid sound palette and an experimental sense of rhythm.

DJ Haram is a producer & DJ who distinctively ties her New Jersey musical history with more recent involvement in the Philadelphia DIY noise scene, whilst paying homage to her Middle Eastern roots. A close affiliate of New York's Discwoman collective, she is also one half of 700 Bliss with rapper & poet Moor Mother, who features on this EP. Haram's non-traditional understanding of Islam, paired with a nuanced perspective on folk tradition and mythology, underpins the EP, bringing fantasy and colour to this in-between place. On opener `No Idol', a darbuka rhythm pairs with offbeat claps around a dark synth and a contrasting airy flute melody, illustrating the theme of duality running through the music. The melodies of `No Idol' are revisited in the final track remix, sped up with a classic Baltimore club beat and energetic bedsprings samples. `Interlude' is a combination of the sounds and patterns from each song. `Gemini Rising's synth is reminiscent of John Carpenter, paired with a darbuka rhythm and war drums that transmit a religious sci -fi horror aesthetic. `Body Count' is propelled by Jersey Club kicks with a distorted drum crunch and ticking rim shot in triplets, and an ethereal melody. `Grace (K.O.D.)' has menacing cinematic stabs that feel like acid raining on the scattered percussion. On the 700 Bliss track `Candle Light', Moor Mother's distorted and doubled up vocal chorus evokes a frantic yet solemn energy as she speaks on themes of life and death. `Grace' is an EP constructed through deep feeling, transmitting vital dancefloor energy. It's music is versatile, imbued with a strong will, personality, and colour.

Release:2014 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Fatima's debut album is called ‘Asiatisch’, and as the track titles suggest, the record provides a simulated road trip through an imagined China. Musically, the album is an homage to that quietly influential sub-strain of grime, often loosely termed 'sinogrime' due to its preoccupation with Asian motifs and melodies, pioneered by the likes of Wiley and Jammer at the beginning of the 2000s in East London.

'Asiatisch' is a provocation which asks more questions than it answers. The title is the German word for Asian. Unlike its title, however, the music on 'Asiatisch' revolves around the fantasies of East Asia as refracted through pulpy Western pop culture, in particular Hollywood, literary fiction, music, cartoons and advertising. Fatima asks what is meant by the term 'Asian' in a digital age of viral interchange and the hi-speed trading of cultural bytes; the concept of 'shanzhai' proves pivotal, a term whose meaning stems from a wild, out of control zone of banditry, but which has come to be used to refer to the Chinese counterfeiting of Western brands and goods.

While a number of producers have made takes on 'sinogrime' over the last few years, 'Asiatisch' is really the first record that attempts to articulate this weird complex of sonic interchanges between the West and China.

Jessy Lanza’s debut album 'Pull My Hair Back', co-written and co-produced with Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys, is a 2013 flagship for what electronic pop could sound like, stripped of bloated, behaviourist impulses that treat listeners like lab rats. It's graceful and erotic without the gratuitous close ups, icey and sensual, sweet without rotting your teeth, emotional but with enough blue glow to pull your heart strings.

Chicago footwork legend and co-founder of the Teklife producers crew (alongside his musical collaborator DJ Rashad), DJ Spinn makes his long awaited return to Hyperdub with `Da Life' EP, and we couldn't be happier to have him back.Featuring four brand new offerings, `Da Life' EP is energetic, fast paced and classic footwork. First up is the high energy `Knock A Patch Out', a frantic and cascading key melody contained in crisp claps, with Spinn's vocal flowing in half way through the track.Next up is `Make Her Hot', which starts out in half time blossoming into a full blown footwork slow jam.`Sky Way', featuring Teklife member DJ Manny, has a moody G Funk melody that starts slowly in half time, with rolling snares and organic kicks.Closing track `U Ain't Really Bout Dat Life' is an ode to Teklife. Icey synths rise and shimmer with an auto tuned vocal from Spinn spelling out ''T-E-K-L-I-F-E".Alongside Rashad, Spinn united the footwork genre's producers and took it global. 'Da Life' represents his re-entry back into the scene, four years after 2015's 'Off That Loud' EP, and he's coming back as strong as ever.

After last year's excellent 'Insula' album, Proc Fiskal returns to Hyperdub with the six track EP 'Shleekit Doss'; in his own words, "a kind of representation of the time I was running the club night of the same name in Edinburgh." "These tunes represent the night's ethos of genre-defiance and high-energy futuristic sets, ecstatic and transcendent while still being fun and stupid. I was getting my friends to play and I made all the posters on my phone - like this EP's artwork. I also started hoarding old FM synths which crop up a lot on the EP, and was reading a lot of sci-fi like Isaac Asimov's 'Foundation', and '2001'. The night ran until last November when the bouncers and some punters got in a fight, the club got damaged, and unfortunately I got banned too." Through this mayhem and misdemeanour, 'Shleekit Doss' feels like an oasis of calm; light, bouncy and melodic, the EP sees Proc developing the depth and range of his music in satisfying ways. The beatless, processed male voice choirs of 'Satan' open the set, breaking into glitchy drums before the melodies are time-stretched into a pretty drone and gentle rolling piano. Clouds of bittersweet synths waft across cut-up voices and clattering drums on 'Smith's Deli', while 'Pico' is a driving mix of tight, tiny micro-edits that feel like micro-house crossbred with jungle breaks. '2 Moros' takes the Sinogrime developed on 'Insula' deeper into dense rhythmic abstraction, and on '4 minutes', charming synth melodies and 8-bit bass lines are threaded through skeletal drum machine kicks and snares. 'Prop-O-Deed' finishes the EP, Proc Fiskal displaying his inimitable gift for heart-wrenching anthemic melody, built around tuned Asian percussion and scratchy synth violin.

One side of me is very much against the explanation and intellectualisation of my work. This side of me says the work is just another world and we won't get anywhere by talking about it.

That it's a distraction from feeling it. The other side of me loves to intellectualise and interpret.

But of course, it's always just a temporary snap shot of what I project in the moment. I call these two sides the child and adult in me.

They're constantly in conversation as I work and after. The child is a lot more present in the process of working, and the adult has a bit more presence afterwards.

For the last EP I wrote brief snapshots of what each track meant to me. Some of it still feels true now, and some of it has changed.

For this EP I'll just leave it with no explanation. I've done a lot of new visual work that will come out alongside this and they can also be interpreted and paired in any way.

If this EP is your first encounter with my work and you want more context, you can check my website and Instagram.

It's all the same world.

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Mnestic Pressure' is Lee Gamble's first album since 2014 and his first with Hyperdub, a reset that sees a noticeable change in his sound and the concepts that feed into his music. Lee says 'From Diversions 1994-1996' (2012) through to Koch' (2014) - my music felt like I was dealing with signals from elsewhere - signals from the unconscious, sub-aqua, hallucinated, dreamt. Mnestic Pressure' feels like their decoded offspring, a terra interpretation.' The title Mnestic Pressure' comes from Lee's thinking about how our contemporary memory is pressured, individually, but also collectively. 'We live in these strobing, visual times, like a constant subliminal advertisement but, also over the last few years the world seems to have become more and more dreamlike, alien, and parodic itself and there was this part of me that wanted to drag my music back from this Shangri-La, but fully drenched and infected by its ghosts.' Mnestic Pressure' as a whole is a simulation of this experience, a flow of targeted information, through contrasting and quickly changing terrain, from one track to another you're dragged into a new space. The pressure to move is intrinsic to the flow of the album, one thing morphologically transforms into another, zooming in and out from wide angle to detail, reshaping into new forms at a speed Lee's music hasn't before. The music on Mnestic Pressure' has a hardness, with a structure and melody that was sublimated in Lee's previous LPs. It builds on his more recent experiments with more functional dancefloor forms. Here his hypermodern production and crunchy, dissembled beats feel like they could be malfunctioning holograms projected onto the hallucinated memories of his early work.

'Nothing' is Kode9's first solo album and is about nothing. The album throws horror soundtracks, sampled library and j-pop records into a no man’s land between grime, early dubstep and Chicago footwork. Mostly instrumental, it zigzags between hypnotic, downcast loops, growling drones, and jagged cut-ups of androids gone haywire, threaded through twitchy, transatlantic rhythms and sub-bass inaudible through your laptop speakers. Building slowly, but more upbeat than previous albums, many of these tracks have more in common with Kode9's recent singles from the last few years than they do with his two previous albums with collaborator The Spaceape, 'Memories of the Future' (2006) and 'Black Sun' (2012). Yet 'Nothing' is haunted both by The Spaceape's presence (he died in 2014 after a prolonged battle with cancer), on ‘Third Ear Transmission’, a communiqué from a zone of digital immortality, and his absence, on 'Void’, whose spaces were originally intended for the vocalist, and ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, which closes the album with a 9 minute silence. Now confirmed for release as a double-LP, the initial run will be a limited edition pressing on glass-effect translucent vinyl, housed in a high quality gatefold jacket and inner sleeves displaying Optigram’s remarkable artwork to its fullest effect. Also included is a complimentary mp3 download code.

The emotional, spiritual and psychological effects of living with illness and the "unknown" are dissected wryly, but often with unforgiving brutality, in this new batch of songs.

Across the album, LV's music is 'zingy'; analogue synths digitally propelled by multisided rhythms, that take off from the interzone between UK funky and kwaito house's bouncy rhythms. ‘Sebenza’ with instructional cheerleading over clicking beats. ‘Sebenza’ brings to attention a handful of the awesome talent of South Africa’s young generation of MCs over the finest productions of South London.
