Laurel Halo returns to Hyperdub for her third LP with a fresh approach and a new sound. Routed out of the electronic abstraction of 2015’s In Situ - but with clear reference to 2012's sleeper-hit Quarantine - Dust is an album revolving around loose and languid songs; warped, sun-filled, melted and at times, heavy-hearted and obscure. Recorded over a period of two years, the writing process began at EMPAC in upstate New York in January 2015. With access to microphones, percussion, keys and a wide range of routings, Laurel spent days alone in the cavernous space, later inviting musicians Eli Keszler and Lafawndah to join her there. Those sessions would eventually become this album: a collection of breezy, broken songs, based on woody instrumentation, sub bass and restless, intricate electronics. Earnest songwriting meets with modal cut-up strategies, improvisational playing with higrade digital dust. Tactile and fibrous throughout the record, the vocals and percussion coalesce and breathe life into each other. Swung grooves eddy and collapse; acoustic drums are warped into sensual, febrile melodies. The lyrics are themselves bricolage, without a specific narrator or place in time. They slip in and out of view, something that is visualised in the album’s inner panel. Extending the influence, the album opener ‘Sun To Solar’ is an adaptation of 'Servidão de Passagem' by Brazilian concrete poet Haroldo de Campos. In line with the album’s sound, Dust is 'Laurel Halo' as a flexible cast of characters. Filled with dialogue, the album helms an interchangeable ensemble of vocalists and musicians, featuring vocals from Klein, Lafawndah, and Michael Salu, as well as musicians such as Eli Keszler, Craig Clouse ($hit and $hine), Julia Holter, Max D, Michael Beharie and Diamond Terrifier. Laurel’s omnivorous influences play out in mutated fashion - coalesced, unfettered and inclusive - a broad musical palette free from entrenched modes, catalysed by digital production that could only happen in 2017.

DVA’s new album ‘NOTU_URONLINEU’ marks a strong and brave turning point for his music. Made with the [Hi:Emotions] moniker that DVA has used for a number of remixes in the past, ‘NOTU_URONLINEU’ is very different from what you might know him for, both in its darkness and its abstract ambitions, but the detail and quality of the music is primed to win over new fans. The rhythmic brilliance and use of space that have given his dance floor recordings their distinct character have mutated and undergone re-assembly into deeper and darker shades. A more pronounced ‘off grid’, improvised character has seeped in, lending the record a looser feel to previous work, as if intuition guides it rather than club practicalities. The album was made under some new self-imposed conditions; of the recording process, DVA says ‘I realised before making this album I was most happy when listening to music in the dark like I did when I was at school. So I decided to record the whole album in the dark too’. Along with this, the album hints at themes of online alienation, confusion, control and domination, and is peppered with hints of faux-therapeutic advertising and psychotic jingles - a reflection of the stress of online life. Of the themes, DVA says ‘The album project comes from a short visual story set in a time where a mega corporation named H:E / Hi:Emotions is slowly taking control of everything, and planning to eventually make all people live life under one brand in virtual reality. ‘NOTU_URONLINEU’ puts you at the start of that journey.

Okzharp and Manthe Ribane return with their second EP ‘Tell Your Vision', a call and response between Manthe's vocals and Okzharp's production. Both bring their unique energies to the mix, manifesting in a raw confidence of new moods and temperatures that were brought out from their first taste of touring and living on autopilot. The EP's title is a reference to its opener, ‘Teleported', which was created in Okzharp's car on an exploratory drive through London and inspired by the art and energy they came across. The track opens with a ferocious bass line, with Manthe's rumbling vocals rolling rhythmically over the top. She takes us with her as she lets the music possess her as if dancing; quickly spitting the vocals back out, urging the listener to "Tell your vision!”. A much more gentle and reflective turn comes on second track ‘B U'. Okzharp's slow and soft lullaby melody and Manthe's warm and inspiring lyrics tug at the heartstrings. In the upbeat and playful ‘Maybe This', Manthe's vocals flit between a hum that softly swells over the top of Okzharp's spacey melody, into an energised and bouncing rap. The EP rounds off with the warm anthem ‘Piki Piki', with the chorus sung in the South African Sepedi dialect. Okzharp's long synth lines draw us in with Manthe's vocals melting and blending into the track. ‘Piki Piki' has an unmistakably positive vibe, which becomes emphasised when Manthe switches to English, with lyrics that advocate self-affirmation and self-love.

Jessy Lanza’s debut album 'Pull My Hair Back', co-written and co-produced with Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys, is a 2013 flagship for what electronic pop could sound like, stripped of bloated, behaviourist impulses that treat listeners like lab rats. It's graceful and erotic without the gratuitous close ups, icey and sensual, sweet without rotting your teeth, emotional but with enough blue glow to pull your heart strings.

Hype Williams' Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland have released a lot of albums in the last couple of years - few of them better than their untitled 2010 effort for Carnivals - so you could be forgiven for not keeping count. But the truth is that this record, their first for Kode9's Hyperdub, is one of their most haunting and vividly realised to date. Copeland's sighing vocals are worth the price of admission alone, particularly when riding DIY footwork rhythms ('12') or or playing at pure pop ('2'). Apart from opener '(Venice Dreamway)', the track titles are all numeric, so we'll spare you any more specific references - suffice to say that across the album you get plenty of creepy keyboard reveries, warped vocal loops, miasmic synths and sub-low baselines. It's Hype Williams, you kind of have some idea of what you're going to get beforehand, but they generate such a mystifying, almost alchemical blend of sounds that they just get us every single time. It's hard to isolate what it is exactly, but lurking somewhere behind their broken keyboards and tape decks is something profoundly moving and beautiful. Reissued now!

‘Next Life' is a compilation of new material from Chicago's primary footwork crew, Teklife, carrying the torch for the late, great DJ Rashad, who passed away earlier in 2014. Packed to the limit with hyper-kinetic rhythms and manically chopped samples, there is nothing quite like this disc of pure energy currently in circulation. Not only does this album feature some of footwork's originators such as RP Boo, Traxman, DJ Spinn, Gantman, Manny and DJ Rashad himself, but it's also loaded with the elite of Teklife's second wave, DJ Earl, Taye, Boylan, Phil, Taso, Sirr Tmo, Tre and Heavee, plus extended members of the Teklife family from around the USA (Durban, Tripletrain, DJ Chap) and Europe (DJ Paypal, Jackie Dagger & Feloneezy), who were welcomed in by DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn while on their extensive travels spreading the footwork gospel.

DJ Rashad / Djunya / DJ Spinn / DJ Earl / Quarta 330 / Champion/ Ikonika etc.The second of the Decadub vinyl-only releases dedicates three of its four sides to a volley of woozy and twisted footwork from most of the key members of Chicago's Teklife crew. Side One starts with DJ Rashad and Gant Man's squiggly 303 banger 'Acid Life' and moves onto Taso & Djunya's Darwinian banger 'Only The Strong Will Survive'. Side Two descends into DJ Spinn's bombastic 'All My Teklife' and then Earl, Rashad & Taye's 'Bombaklot' which takes Hyperdub full circle with a yardcore bomb like a 2014 upgrade of the label's early days. Side Three leads with DJ Earl's immaculate diva vocal cut-up of 'I'm Gonna Get You', then moves on into DJ Taye's fizzling R&B jam 'Get Em Up’ and the stone cold, warped humour of 'Icemaster' by Heavee. On the fourth and final side, Tokyo-based ally Quarta330 returns to craft ‘Hanabi’, an epic, uptempo synthesiser jam. Young gun Champion follows with ‘Power Cut’, its minimal, energetic and militant kicks and bass molded with cowbell and lots of tight edits, before dropping some neat keys and a warping bassline two thirds in. Ikonika finishes things off with the solemn march of 'Tug Zone', opening slow but building in flickering high hats and gaseous cymbals into a track which could have emanated from Battlestar Galactica.

Chicago Footwork legend DJ Rashad rounds off an impressive year on Hyperdub with his first album for the label. Named after the recreational cocktail of codeine and sprite, ‘Double Cup’ sees trad 808 footwork workouts thrown into collision with more recent mutations of the sound, presenting Rashad’s most comprehensive showcase of the diversity and strength of the Chicago scene in 2013. The album drags hip hop, R&B, acid, house, techno and jungle into its footwork turbine, spitting them all out in recombinant fragments glued together with purring 808 sub triplets and jerky polyrhythms.

'Nothing' is Kode9's first solo album and is about nothing. The album throws horror soundtracks, sampled library and j-pop records into a no man’s land between grime, early dubstep and Chicago footwork. Mostly instrumental, it zigzags between hypnotic, downcast loops, growling drones, and jagged cut-ups of androids gone haywire, threaded through twitchy, transatlantic rhythms and sub-bass inaudible through your laptop speakers. Building slowly, but more upbeat than previous albums, many of these tracks have more in common with Kode9's recent singles from the last few years than they do with his two previous albums with collaborator The Spaceape, 'Memories of the Future' (2006) and 'Black Sun' (2012). Yet 'Nothing' is haunted both by The Spaceape's presence (he died in 2014 after a prolonged battle with cancer), on ‘Third Ear Transmission’, a communiqué from a zone of digital immortality, and his absence, on 'Void’, whose spaces were originally intended for the vocalist, and ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, which closes the album with a 9 minute silence. Now confirmed for release as a double-LP, the initial run will be a limited edition pressing on glass-effect translucent vinyl, housed in a high quality gatefold jacket and inner sleeves displaying Optigram’s remarkable artwork to its fullest effect. Also included is a complimentary mp3 download code.

Jessy Lanza meets the Teklife crew on this sultry EP, with DJ Spinn and Taso's first-released RnB track, and a Teklife footwork remix with assistance from the late DJ Rashad. The main mix is a dejected confessional slow jam with Jessy's plaintive vocal sitting in the middle of spiralling drums and teardrop-like chords, a gentle guitar refrain dropping in at the end like a comforting hand on the shoulder. Following an instrumental version, the Teklife mix doubles the tempo, switching the gentleness to deliver an interpretation that touches on tense anger, with the sweeping chords the track is built on snapping into shivering shapes, as strings simmer in the background, building the tension. Also included is Bambounou's remix of 'Fuck Diamond', a track on Jessy's ‘Pull My Hair Back’ debut album, which appears here on vinyl for the first time after an initial CD-only release last year on the ‘Hyperdub 10.4’ compilation). Bambounou transforms it into a rough drum machine workout, leaving sparse elements of the original in place - a splash of vocal and a held chord - building a dynamic trance that slips and slides in and out of different patterns.

Cooly G returns with ‘Wait 'Til Night’, an album of sensitive, lo-fi bedroom music, it’s lyrics sketching dreamy scenarios of seduction, lust and sex. The moody South London house of her debut album 'Playin Me' and her DJ sets has given way to a near-horizontal, sometimes melancholy and highly original take on R’n’B. The tracks swing effortlessly with no-fuss musical arrangements that are filtered through reggae sound system culture and US R’n’B in equal amounts, with a slight hint of dark synthpop wound throughout. The pace has come down from the deep, tribal house she's known for so far, with the only constants that run through the album – her intimate vocals and smokey synths – cross-hatched with her characteristic broken rhythmic sense.

Kyle Hall back on Hyperdub for our 10th Anniversary? - Yes please. In fact this is more or less a long delayed EP from the vaults, recorded around the same time as his 2010 ‘Kaychunk’ EP … which just goes to show how ahead of the curve the young Detroit producer is. Starting with 'Girl U So Strong', the track riffs on a distorted arpeggiating bassline, seasick organ and a dubbed out voice, and a flicking metronomic note, starting slowly before shuffling drums give the track some rhythmic focus. Soon a warm melody builds over some happy arpeggios, and the whole track feels like a product of brilliant spontaneous energy. 'Take Me Away' works an 8 bit bassline, bleeps and throbs into an off beat shuffle over a pulsing bass drum, loose and happy, dosed with sunshine and space.

Fatima's debut album is called ‘Asiatisch’, and as the track titles suggest, the record provides a simulated road trip through an imagined China. Musically, the album is an homage to that quietly influential sub-strain of grime, often loosely termed 'sinogrime' due to its preoccupation with Asian motifs and melodies, pioneered by the likes of Wiley and Jammer at the beginning of the 2000s in East London. 'Asiatisch' is a provocation which asks more questions than it answers. The title is the German word for Asian. Unlike its title, however, the music on 'Asiatisch' revolves around the fantasies of East Asia as refracted through pulpy Western pop culture, in particular Hollywood, literary fiction, music, cartoons and advertising. Fatima asks what is meant by the term 'Asian' in a digital age of viral interchange and the hi-speed trading of cultural bytes; the concept of 'shanzhai' proves pivotal, a term whose meaning stems from a wild, out of control zone of banditry, but which has come to be used to refer to the Chinese counterfeiting of Western brands and goods. While a number of producers have made takes on 'sinogrime' over the last few years, 'Asiatisch' is really the first record that attempts to articulate this weird complex of sonic interchanges between the West and China.

‘Beach Mode (Keep It Simple)’ is the perfect snapshot of Ikonika's new album 'Aerotropolis'. It's also her first vocal track, graced with the voice of “One To Watch”, Jessy Lanza. ‘Beach Mode’ combines sunny salsa-like chords and claves, inspired by latin freestyle dance music from the ‘80s, with Jessy's vocals cutting in over some soaring rough synths. It's a refreshingly straight forward and sensual piece of pop dance.

Sam Walton is a 22 year old producer from Manchester who came to Hyperdub after feeding them demo tracks, and started off in 2011 with the ‘Walton EP’, the first of three EPs for the label. Since then he’s honed and developed his music into ‘Beyond’, finding a really fresh and subtle intersection between music that doesn’t seem to naturally fit together, old eski grime, funky and Detroit house and techno but with smudged edges and a colourful industrial sound palette that gives a real richness to his productions. Walton's music is never sombre or angry, but is about subtle combinations; there is an appealing, soulful sensuality to his beautifully crafted and joyous music.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
South Africa meets South London as the LV trio of producers hook up with three of their favourite South African MCs, Okmalumkoolkat from Dirty Paraffin, Spoek Mathambo and MC / producer duo Ruffest. Across the album, LV's music is 'zingy'; analogue synths digitally propelled by multisided rhythms, that take off from the interzone between UK funky and kwaito house's bouncy rhythms. ‘Sebenza’ with instructional cheerleading over clicking beats. ‘Sebenza’ brings to attention a handful of the awesome talent of South Africa’s young generation of MCs over the finest productions of South London.

Cooly G's music is full of stripped down, tribal post-garage beats graced by dubtracted vocals, incomplete seductions and glimpsed vexations, uttered over empty spaces and lush washes. With 'Playin' Me' she has produced a first album that sits next to other recent Hyperdub debuts by Laurel Halo, Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland and DVA as records with original and single-minded perspectives that manage to straddle pop and experimentation perfectly.

Quarantine

Release:2012 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Laurel Halo has developed a self-contained take on electronic music, collapsing the boundaries between ambient, pop, synthetic psychedelia, dub and the techno music of her Midwest roots. Sensual melodies are bent to the point of nausea, inducing the torque of a psychedelic pop that simultaneously recalls elevation and trauma. This is a kind of music you might not have heard before, and in 2012 that in itself is rare.

Terror Danjah's first Hyperdub single of 2011 is an amazing coup, pulling out of the archive a collaboration with singer Meleka, where Terror tempers his grimey production, veering uncharacteristically towards featherlight lushness, while lacing Meleka's sensuous, pitched melisma with a deceptively vicious sub.

Sleazily deranged grime; 'West Coast' has a half-time, low-riding head-nod feel that references classic G-Funk "funky worm" style lead synth, and manages to sound simultaneously melodic and like a swarm of angry wasps.
