In a world where art is compromised and commodified, shrunk down and boxed in, VicktorTaiwò wants us to open up. The vibrant young singer-songwriter traffics in subtle hints andsoaring melodies, slow creeps and grand climaxes. Taiwò is on a mission to collectsomething from himself, and it’s a journey worth following. His debut album, Joy Comes in Spirit, is at once experimental and comforting – collectedshards of soul and style reassembled into something entirely new. The record introduces abold new artist willing to take musical and lyrical risks, and to bare himself to an internationalaudience. The result is an arresting, unforgettable work that shrugs off the expectations wehave that musicians fit easily into recognisable molds. From 'Joy Comes in Spirit’s first note, Vicktor is mining his own psyche for its dark depths andhidden crevices, demanding from himself the sort of emotional reaction his work incites inothers. Songs like “Subducta. Psalm 69,” a seven-minute, multi-part epic, echocontemporary hip-hop, “tDS (Surf)” seems designed to be sung around campfires in thedistant future, “Supernatural Women” traces 808s & Heartbreak back to its Zappian roots. And “Summon,” one of the record’s highlights, is like if you trapped a troubled spirit in aGameBoy Colour

The first word of the album says it all: 'Bang!' On their new album Midnight In A Moonless Dream the Buttertones dig deep and discover something dark. Where their previous album Gravedigging played like the soundtrack of a good spaghetti-western heist movie, Midnight moves to the dark cityscapes of '70s New York and tells the story itself - a perfect and intricate crime executed by a crew of professionals under cover of night, a biting sound befitting of CBGB's while staying true to their LA roots. There are echoes of Suicide and Bauhaus, nods to the spirit of sax and violence that powered the Deadbeats. Midnight is music made for dancers but also for doomed romancers that will appeal to fans of The Cramps, The Gun Club, Car Seat Headrest, Black Lips, King Tuff, Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, and Parquet Courts.

"Parallels" is the fourth full album released under Jason Chung’s distinctive moniker, Nosaj Thing. Masterfully dimensional, "Parallels" represents the acclaimed Los Angeles-based electronic producer/ composer/ performer’s most diverse, vital work yet. As such, Chung sees "Parallels" represents a kind of redemptive rebirth. The album’s compellingly elusive, uncategorizable sonics developed out of what he terms a personal & musical “identity crisis.”According to Chung, working with a group of collaborators on "Parallels" that combined bothlongtime friends and new creative partners added “new energy which pushed me not to limit myself. Everything felt fresh and alive.”Chung is known specifically for his innovative, unexpected musical pairings: Kid Cudi hit up on Nosaj Thing via his MySpace page in 2006, resulting in Chung producing Cudi’s autobiographical classic “The Man on the Moon.” Kendrick Lamar flowed over Nosaj’s ethereal boom bap to create the YouTube gem “Cloud 10”, Chance the Rapper, meanwhile, freaked a Nosaj beat for his 2013 breakout masterpiece “Paranoia” and appeared on Nosaj Thing’s previous LP, 2015’s Fated. Chung and Blonde Redhead vocalist Kazu Makino are also longtime creative partners on each other’s work, her voice appears on "Parallels" as an otherworldly spirit animating the icily ‘80s-synthetic “How We Do.”

The Buttertones’ Gravedigging is more a movie waiting to happen than an album—or asoundtrack just waiting to inspire a movie, with scene after scene of action, tension andrelease set to a sound that takes everything good and true about American music beforethe Beatles prettied it up (surf, sweet soul, the boss saxophone-overdrive garage of theNorthwest wailers like the Sonics) and matches it to punk energy, post-punk precision andthe kind of personality that blows the circuit-breakers at a backyard party.Recorded at Jazzcats studio in LongBeach—home-away-from-home to fellow InnovativeLeisure artists Hanni El Khatib, Tijuana Panthers, Wall of Death and more—in the spring of2016, the sessions were supercharged with hard-won live experience from endlessstreet-level shows and relentless midnight-to-six rehearsals at the Buttertones lock-out.Think of it this way: you might not yet know how the band that made Gravedigging is goingto land—but you know it’s going to hit hard.

Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band initially caught the ears of music enthusiasts via a YouTube clip posted to the DangerousMinds blog in 2013 with the caption “Mindblowing psychedelia from Thailand”. Helped by some interpreters at his local Thairestaurant, sound engineer Josh Marcy travelled to a small village near Lom Sak to record the band professionally. Theresult was their eponymous 2014 debut. The music Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band plays is called phin prayuk. A phin is a 3-stringed lute, on which the band usesa string of BOSS effects pedals, including a phaser, distortion and digital delay. The ever-rotating cast of members spansseveral generations of musicians who play on hand-made instruments and take special pride in their custom mobile PAsystem: an imposing tower of 8 loudspeaker horns atop a huge bass cabinet. A standard engagement sees themperforming during morning rituals, playing several low-key sets from the comfort of plastic lawn chairs. After a mid-daybanquet, they lead a parade through the community to the local temple, picking up more and more partiers along the way.A fan of their casual yet participatory playing environment, Marcy returned to Lom Sak in early 2015 to record more. IIfeatures covers of traditional Thai pop songs, introduces some new players including new phin players Aob and Bas whileretaining some members of the old guard

First, let’s meet back up with the Molochs—you remember them, right? Their America’sVelvet Glory was the earliest burst of light and energy to hit in 2017, an album of electrifiedrock ‘n’ roll like Dylan and Lou Reed by a band named after the Ginsberg-ian glutton godwho demanded the sacrifice of all things good and pure. But now it’s 2018 and Molochhimself is fatter and happier than ever, so the Molochs couldn’t just make another record. After Glory showed the world who they were, they needed to make an album that showedwhat they could do. So Flowers In The Spring is where the Molochs worked harder, thoughtharder and fought harder to be the kind of band that the times demand: “I like to think theworld just needs some good solid songs out there,” founder Lucas Fitzsimons says. “It’ssimple. It’s not easy … but it’s simple.”America’s Velvet Glory, their first-ever record for L.A.’s Innovative Leisure label, had sparkedtheir first-ever U.S and European tours, first-ever festival sets, first-ever international pressand more. (Top music mag Mojo even said they’d made one of the year’s best albums—“Anyyear!”) Follow-up Flowers bloomed almost exactly a year later at Long Beach’s Jazzcatsstudio between December of 2017 and January of 2018, where Fitzsimons and longtimeband member Ryan Foster had recorded Glory. By the time they’d returned, they had a slateof songs that had come to Fitzsimons in flash moments, written on nerve-wrackingtranscontinental flights or on isolated nights in an L.A. apartment, captured at once in burstsof insight or rescued from almost-abandonment in discarded notebooks. As on Glory, inspiration from Syd Barrett, Dylan, Nikki Sudden and kindred spirit Peter Perrettof the Only Ones was at work, but the Molochs are endlessly (appropriately?) ravenous whenit comes to things to read and listen to and learn from. On Flowers they’d refine andrecombine their sound, working in that long tradition of poets who cover (or discover)themselves in pop songs. “To Kick In A Lover’s Door” blows Flowers open with the wit andprecision of the Go-Betweens, and “I Wanna Say To You” draws more from some ofCreation Records’ dreamiest dreamers than it does from any esoteric 60s howlers. “FlowersIn The Spring” and “Pages Of Your Journal” could be two lost Kinks singles from twodifferent Kinks eras—that Ray Davies-ian venom stays the same, of course—and thecharming/disarming “Too Lost In Love” makes feeling down sound like cheering up, just likethe Clean did.Yes, they do have their first-ever string section here, and that could confuse some people.(“People go, ‘Wow, it sounds more mature.’” says Fitzsimons. “What kind of boring shit isthat?”) But Flowers isn’t a grown-up album or a show-off album or a break-up album or ajust-had-to-make-another-album album because the Molochs don’t pick targets that tiny.Love and disgrace and life and death blur and bleed into each other, but at the core ofFlowers is a story about standing against the inhuman by being more human, howevermessily honest that needs to be. (Or like Fitzsimons sings at the end of the record: bewarethat “determination by a whole / to destroy the human soul.” Funny how that comes in asong where he claims he can’t explain everything that happens to him, because he sort ofjust did.) So consider their new Flowers In The Spring a meticulously plotted counterattackagainst all things Moloch-ian, with clear, concise, immediate, undeniable, simple, direct popsongs, says Fitzsimons, each sharpened enough to cut through anything it touched. That’swhat he needed to do, he says, because that’s what felt most true. Maybe it really was thatsimple, even if it wasn’t easy. Like he’d explain in a song with just seven words: “There’ssomething I wanna say to you.”

Even though the Mexican border-town of Tijuana has a stigmatized history it has managed to produce many vibrant and unique artists. None are quite like Mint Field. Comprised of 21-year-olds Estrella Sanchez (vocals & guitar) and Amor Amezcua (drums & synths), Mint Field’s sound is organic, spacious, and inhabited by specters that lurk behind rhythms, where Estrella’s angelic voice evokes a supernatural world of beauty and melancholy. Their new record, Pasar De Las Luces, first for LA-based Innovative Leisure Records, is “a compilation of our lives from two years ago to now” says the band. Since recording an initial EP in 2015 in their hometown of Tijuana, Mint Field have played Coachella, SXSW and have extensively toured the US and Mexico. In the summer of 2017 the band traveled to Detroit to record with producer Christopher Koltay. “We had a much clearer idea of what we wanted and we had the tools to make it. When we recorded [our debut EP] Primeras Salidas, it was a homemade album and we didn’t know what we were doing.” This time, they managed to channel their inspirations and influences to transmit sentiments of profound sorrow, nostalgia and immaculate beauty…revisiting sounds from the past to make them contemporary. Mint Field’s vision comes alive on Pasar De Las Luces ‘s 13 immaculate tracks that nod to everything from dream pop to fuzz-saturated shoegaze. Album opener “El Parque Parecía No Tener Fin,” is a melodic number with haunting melodic lines where we can appreciate their post-punk tendencies. “Ciudad Satélite” has woven harmonies and crescendos that detonate into a flurry of feelings anchored by a dramatic bassline. “Quiero Otoño De Nuevo” goes full krautrock and is like an introverted, reflective and delicate Neu!. ”Cambios Del Pasar” borrows the distorted and imperfect guitar sounds of ‘90s indie bands like Yo Lat Tengo. “Nada Es Estático y Evoluciona” develops from minimalism into a silent scream and “Club De Chicas” is probably the peppiest song of the bunch. The whole record has a unique sound that makes it stand apart from projects by contemporaries. While deceptively young themselves, Sanchez and Amezcua not only show the potential of influencing even younger fans, but of also defining themselves as stand alone voices in emotional music. Although they have a foot in the past, they never let themselves get caught by nostalgia; they reinterpret the best of what the past has to offer in order to better express their feeling in the present. It’s a timeless quality that will surely take them far into the future.

Bird Brains is a four song collection from Holy Fuck, recorded live at various studios over the past few years. They represent the ongoing creative process of a band whose members live in different cities (in both Canada and the US) yet insist their music should be a collaborative process. These four songs aim to capture the raw energy of four people, not apart as bedroom producers, but together as a spirited exchange of ideas, a dynamic interaction that comes from years of friendship. While Bird Brains was largely self-produced, a few very talented Engineers/Producers aided greatly in that process, including Shawn Everett (John Legend, Warpaint, Alabama Shakes), who recorded the song “Chains” at The Banff Centre for the Arts, and David Wrench (Caribou, FKA Twigs, The XX) who mixed the song “New Dang”. The cover image was designed by long time friend Seth Smith, visual artist, film maker, and musician from Nova Scotia. As the band describes, “the image is quite gross and beautiful, natural and artificial all at the same time, which we feel best represents how we hear our music.”

The tracks flow through timeless electronica influenced by Selected Ambient era Aphex Twin and early Larry Heard as well as contemporary artists like Carribou and Jamie XX. Posner sketched the framework and palate for the project over a few years of travel, bringing the final EP together in a sea-side cabin watching waves crash against the rocky Maine coast. Ascending from Los Angeles by way of the Bay Area, artist, writer and producer Harriet Brown is back to deliver his debut album, Contact, the follow-up to his 2014 EP, New Era. Composed, arranged, co-produced and performed by your very own himself, Contact is a concept album about communication and the contact we purposely, accidentally and inherently struggle to make between friends, lovers and strangers, be them human or otherwise. And when it comes to the live show, Harriet Brown will stun you. It’s an all-in-one package deal with sensual vocals, live loops, groovin’ drum machines, manic guitar lines and thick synths, all at the hands of one being. It’s no secret that this multi-instrumentalist and producer is influenced sonically and ethically by The Artist himself. And If Prince is his king, Sade is his queen, as they reside over an ever expanding court of every genre that falls in between. Harriet Brown’s sound is not what you’d expect from a one man band – sexual and sensitive, ambiguous and androgynous, prepare to be paralyzed by the sounds of Harriet Brown.

Originally, he’d hoped to explode the lingering idea that he was simply a blues-rock guitar player, but that’s why Savage Times touches on everything from garage rock to punk to disco, hip-hop and even some unexpected solo-guitar self-portraiture. But on the way, he also exploded his own idea of what he could do—even maybe who he was, or would be. Savage Times was an experiment as well as an experience, that touched on some of the most personal, social & political elements to date.

The Buttertones are a five piece Rock and Roll outfit hailing from Los Angeles, California. Applying a thick coat of nostalgia paired with modern sensibilities, the Buttertones create a sound familiar to those versed in the early history of rock music, yet inviting to anyone hungry for a new contemporary sound. Founded in late 2012, LA transplants Richard Araiza (vocals/guitar), Modesto Cobian (drums), and Sean Redman (bass) began writing and performing around southern California. The self-titled "Buttertones" album was released on cassette in October of 2013 by Lolipop Records. The cassette sold out in 2 months. 2014 saw the addition of guitar player Dakota Böettcher. With a clear focus The Buttertones began work on the self-released "For the Head and for the Feet" EP, as well as a west coast tour. Saxophonist London Guzman joined the group in February of 2015. The 8inch vinyl single “Stray Dog Strut / Shut Up Sugar” is now released on Innovative Leisure Records. On their 2013 debut album Voyage, L.A. duo De Lux introduced theirsingular sound, a fusion of post-punk, disco, funk and synth wizardry.Fun though Voyage was, described by The Guardian as “intricate, witty, inventive, dazzling” and by DJ Mag as “fresh, immediate”, fortheir follow-up, De Lux felt compelled to add an element of socialcommentary to the mix.Inspired by the infamously uncensored lyrics of punk performanceartist Karen Finley, as well as the likes of David Byrne, ESG and Can,Generation is a darker album than Voyage, heavy on urban anxietyand audaciously candid. Over its eleven songs, De Lux charts thedistance between childhood and adulthood, nostalgia and aspiration, and dream and reality, all with unflinching autobiographical detail. Theresult is entirely unfiltered and fearlessly contemporary. From “Center of L.U.B”, a roller-skate jam that examines one utilitycompany employee’s ennui, to the satirical and harrowing “Oh ManThe Future”, Generation is never one-note, an album about highhighs, low lows and the vast space in between. Stylistically, De Luxhas advanced, too, folding styles as varied as krautrock, punk andItalo disco into their template. It may be a step forward for the band, but Generation isn’t a departure. This is De Lux going deeper, notfarther away, and the result is electrifying.

On his 2011 debut Will The Guns Come Out, Hanni El Khatib tried something he'd never tried before-making a bedroomstyle recording of his stripped brand of rock'n'roll mostly for the sheer joy of making it. For his ferocious 2013 follow-up Head In The Dirt, he tried something new again, enlisting Dan Auerbach as a producer. But after Head In The Dirt's release and almost a year of relentless touring, Hanni knew he needed to go past 'unpredictable' all the way to 'unprecedented.' He needed isolation, time and the chance to experiment. So after 30 days locked in hand-picked L.A. studio The Lair, the result is the album Moonlight-the rarest and most welcome kind of album, made at that perfect point in life where confidence, experience, and technique unite to help an artist do anything they want.

Beyond the real deal is the unreal deal, and therein lies Feeding People, a band of teenagers making some of the heaviest psychedelic around decadesafter the 13th Floor Elevators declared their hallucinatory sense of purpose. Feeding People was founded and is headed by nineteen-year-old Jessie Jones who channels the raw power of Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick and Janis Joplin at her most primal as she leads with strong, almost vicious vocals, bellowing blasphemies as if possessed by spirits with a masked sweetness reminiscent of Billie Holiday. Her siren call reeled in Chris Alfaro of Free the Robots who produced some of the band’s earliest recordings, all of which were written acoustic and recorded electric in a single take in a’ 6’x10’ walk-in closet with a 4-track recorder and mic stands made of broom handles taped to fire extinguishers. After playing only a couple shows, Feeding People became the second band ever invited to play storied electronic music club Low End Theory, where they shared the stage with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. This is the full length LP recorded and produced by Jonny Bell of The Crystal Antlers and Hanni El Khatib.

Nick Waterhouse is the New Breed - An R&B fanatic who combines an uncanny old-school sensibility and with a charged, contemporary style. Having just turned 25, he joins the ranks of similar acts and producers of recent times - Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Mayer Hawthorne, Aloe Blacc et al -- that are all moving forward into the past, yet all quite different. For Waterhouse, his muse is the over-modulated sound of vintage '50s R&B and Rebel Rock n' Roll. His take on such a time-honored tradition evokes the back-alleythrill of New Orleans, Detroit and Memphis in their heyday. He combines an astute attention to detail recording on all vintage equipment with an honest desire to match the emotional impact of the music that inspires him.

Innovative Leisure Vinyl, CD & Tape

Innovative Leisure is an American record label from Los Angeles, founded by Nate Nelson, Jamie Strong and hanni El Khatib in 2010. Nate Nelson and Jamie Strong worked together at Stones Throw Records, Hanni El Khatib was Creative Director for the streetwear label HUF from San Francisco. They came together to give a framework for the artists and the music they believed in. Their first release was the debut of Lazer Sword, a duo from San Francisco. The common denominator of Innovative Leisure is not a certain sound, but the quality of the music. »At the end of the day, we are music fans that want to work with artists that we believe in and music that we enjoy. It’s really a simple concept, but we want it to be a family and a home full of incredible musicians and equally as important, incredible individuals.«(Jamie Strong) Equally important for the three founder next to the music is a certain penchant for fashion and design. There are not many labels like Innovative Leisure, that are focused on these three elements (music, fashion, design) equally. This makes them special in the label scene worlwide.
