Item Description
Arthur King is a Los Angeles based experimental music and art collective comprised of
musicians, visual artists, and filmmakers. Changing Landscapes (Wauters Farm) is an Arthur
King album created by three musicians: Peter Walker, Aaron Espinoza, and David Ralicke.
Performed and recorded live outdoors on a farm in rural Iowa at night, Changing
Landscapes (Wauters Farm) touches on a wide spectrum of sounds and styles. A heavy
emphasis on processed field recordings taken from this same farm establishes a textural
backdrop for the musicians to expand upon and play off of with a wide variety of both
electronic and acoustic instruments.
Opening track “Swift” begins with the rustling of corn stalks and various metallic scrapes.
Momentum builds as a relentless dub-like drum machine pattern and wildly resonating
synth bass kick in, ultimately culminating in an industrial stomp carried by squalls of guitar
feedback. The following piece “Lightning Bugs” heads into more subdued territory as swells
of droning synths and a languid looping percussive phrase provide a bed for the warm,
welcoming bellow of contra-alto clarinet that provides the focal point of the song. The rest
of the album oscillates between these moments of intensity and calm, concluding with the
gentle stillness of album closer “75th St (E58).”
Arthur King cultivate sonic landscapes on Wauters Farm that recall the cavernous grooves
of Lee Perry, the dense electronic chaos of Throbbing Gristle, and at times the
wandering, dream-like atmospheres of Jon Hassell and Cluster. At the heart of the album is
an inquiring quality expressed through Walker, Espinoza, and Ralicke’s musical reactions to
the contrast between nature and technology present in this pastoral environment.
