Item Description
DJ Duch is a project exploring the little-known and hard to come by music of the 1990s from the countries of the Eastern Bloc. The "Labirynt Śmierci" ("A Maze of Death") cassette contains a mix of pieces recorded in Poland between the years 1989-1999. It is a testimony to the sound landscape of the era of political transformation, wild - fledging at that time - capitalism, and the explosion of homegrown creative output that followed.

The fact that until 1994 there was a de facto grey area in Poland in terms of copyrights resulted in a flood of pirate productions, audiotapes and videotapes (often featuring peculiar hand-painted covers similar to the popular Ghanaian film posters), reprints of fantasy and sci-fi literature, which quickly and massively captured the minds and imagination of Poles hungry for new thrills. After the era of continuous shortages in The Polish People's Republic, the citizens of the newly constituted 3rd Republic of Poland were absorbing the previously inaccessible creations of the Western culture, at the same time creating their own reflecting the original in a more or less successful way. It is precisely these "imperfections" typical of the first native approaches to musical genres such as hip-hop, house, techno, italo disco or electronic music in general that DJ Duch has documented in "Labirynt Śmierci".

The tape includes slow trance, early trip-hop, proto-rap, hybrids of disco-polo, ambient, el-muzyka and yass dubbed from rare tapes and CDs. The graphic design provided by Kornel Nurzyński reflects the atmosphere of an era marked with fascination with B-horror movies, cheap literary horror fiction and "hands that heal" type of stories. Over an hour-long recording refers to Olga Drenda's "Duchologia" ("Hauntology") and Wiktor Stribog's "Kraina Grzybów" ("The Land of Mushrooms") as it invites the listener on a nostalgic journey to the 90s, but most of all, it sheds a new light on the music of that period which has now been forgotten and remains underestimated.
